- 0:12Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:14Speaker 1: that makes personal finance fun, especially on Fridays. It is
- 0:18Speaker 1: our favorite day of the week because we get our
- 0:20Speaker 1: team together to celebrate you. How beautiful She's on the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Money community ms Jascarrici, she's here and she's going to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be sharing her favorite money wins and confessions from the
- 0:29Speaker 1: She's on the Money Facebook group. Miss Bech Sayed is
- 0:32Speaker 1: here and she is back with a number of very
- 0:35Speaker 1: good broke tips. And this week we're going to be
- 0:38Speaker 1: helping to answer a money dilemma, which is about whether
- 0:40Speaker 1: opening a joint investment account is a good idea and
- 0:43Speaker 1: something that you slid into our dms about how to
- 0:46Speaker 1: protect yourself when your partner has a gambling addiction, which
- 0:49Speaker 1: I think is a really important one to talk about
- 0:52Speaker 1: before we get there. How have your week's been, Miss
- 0:54Speaker 1: bechs Sayed.
- 0:55Speaker 2: My week has been lovely.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I'm back home and I know that a lot of people
- 1:00Speaker 3: get like post holiday blues, but I get post holiday
- 1:04Speaker 3: elation because.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I think that I thank you.
- 1:08Speaker 3: It's just like and I don't really have a routine,
- 1:10Speaker 3: but I just think like not having to have like
- 1:13Speaker 3: dirty clothes in your bag and.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Just like things are organized again.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Also, being away from my friends for a week is
- 1:20Speaker 3: actually really hard. I know it sounds silly, but it
- 1:22Speaker 3: is really hard to not see people for that long.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's only a week.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I don't know how I go traveling longer, but for context,
- 1:29Speaker 3: I just came here from one week holiday in Thailand.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I could see myself going back, but not for a
- 1:33Speaker 3: long time. I think I need to clean on my
- 1:36Speaker 3: clothes and just get organized again.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But no, really good week. What about you good?
- 1:40Speaker 4: I'm very jealous. I'd love to go to Thailand. It's
- 1:42Speaker 4: on my list. But I have been just getting into
- 1:44Speaker 4: the Halloween spirits.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah why sure, you guys know she's been sending me
- 1:51Speaker 1: dms about Halloween purchases.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Yes I have. I did start because that's when all
- 1:56Speaker 4: the good stuff comes out. You got to get it
- 1:58Speaker 4: all so cute.
- 2:00Speaker 5: But yes, I like to get, as you guys know,
- 2:02Speaker 5: as much mileage out of my celebration.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And the second Halloween is done, I believe she puts
- 2:06Speaker 1: her Christmas tree.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Up absolutely, so we're getting a full month and a
- 2:09Speaker 5: half of the Halloween goodness.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah no like, no no shade, no judgment. I love
- 2:14Speaker 1: this for you. Also, Jess always makes Halloween treats and yes,
- 2:18Speaker 1: spooky treat We love you for us forward. Yes, yeah,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I mean that's my highlight of the week is knowing
- 2:24Speaker 1: that Jess is planning all of her holiday treats. I
- 2:26Speaker 1: would like to request those spiders that you made last year.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like the ones with the noodles, the noodle
- 2:31Speaker 1: chocolate spider things. They were a ten out of ten.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Think you put sprinkles on them, and the sprinkles were
- 2:36Speaker 1: very well placed but also very delicious. So yeah, every
- 2:40Speaker 1: year literally just does that. Now I can't think about
- 2:42Speaker 1: anything except for the fact that she made these awesome
- 2:45Speaker 1: chocolates that one time. My week has been chaotic. Honestly,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I feel like it's already December. I know it's not.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's September, but like it feels like December at this
- 2:56Speaker 1: point in time, and I just I feel like this
- 2:59Speaker 1: year's gotten away from me. If you said, oh, yeah,
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's March thirty first, and I was a little bit tired,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I would not blink yeah, like I'd be like, yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 1: of course it is.
- 3:06Speaker 4: That's so funny, do you know what I mean? Like
- 3:08Speaker 4: gone weird? This year?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Time is absolutely flying and that's so good, but like
- 3:13Speaker 1: so chaotic and like we're still living at the beach
- 3:16Speaker 1: and like driving back up and down, So it's quite
- 3:19Speaker 1: quite a lot. But that's not a complaint. So should
- 3:23Speaker 1: we do a little five star review before we get
- 3:25Speaker 1: into their breake tips and your money wins? Yes, alright,
- 3:28Speaker 1: sit down, strap in, because we have one from Megan.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Meghan says, I'm an OG listener, but I'm still learning.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I've been listening since the first episode was launched, and
- 3:38Speaker 1: often refer back to old episodes even after all bes years.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Such an easy to understand way of learning about finances,
- 3:45Speaker 1: excepting where you are out and creating a plan to
- 3:48Speaker 1: move forward. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to make a
- 3:51Speaker 1: difference and set themselves up for success. Geez, yes, are
- 3:54Speaker 1: so nice, but please don't go back and listen to
- 3:57Speaker 1: the old episodes. I'm a changed person in the paris
- 4:00Speaker 1: of those episodes.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Theres some gems.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you're nice, but like you weren't on the first season,
- 4:06Speaker 1: so you didn't have to go through the like trial
- 4:09Speaker 1: by fire of not knowing what the heck you were
- 4:11Speaker 1: doing and sitting on the floor with a microphone and
- 4:12Speaker 1: a sock. But and like, I just feel like the
- 4:15Speaker 1: quality of the first few episodes just isn't what it is. Now.
- 4:20Speaker 4: We've grown, you know, and that's good being pe sock.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah, we've glowed up.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's cool.
- 4:25Speaker 1: We're proud of where we've come from.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I'm proud of where you've come from.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I would be too, honestly looking at that journey anyway.
- 4:31Speaker 1: With Jessic Gorici, what are your money wins and confessions?
- 4:33Speaker 5: Alrighty mostly this week, I've got one from Lauren, who
- 4:37Speaker 5: said she put her health insurance into AI and asked
- 4:40Speaker 5: it to help her make the most of her cover.
- 4:43Speaker 5: It helped her to figure out what appointments she should
- 4:46Speaker 5: book to ensure that she's getting the most out of
- 4:48Speaker 5: her money for you know, obviously you pay for cover,
- 4:50Speaker 5: but people don't always use everything. So she said that
- 4:53Speaker 5: it gave her like a really good breakdown of what
- 4:55Speaker 5: she should use and what she could do and with
- 4:57Speaker 5: all the different things from a premium, I thought it
- 4:59Speaker 5: was very clever. Next, I've got a money win from Kristen,
- 5:02Speaker 5: who said her twelve year old microwave had a recall
- 5:04Speaker 5: on it, so you're getting a brand new one.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Cool.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Would we love wild after twelve years?
- 5:09Speaker 1: Is that crad that's actually insane. I would have thought
- 5:11Speaker 1: that it was out of warranty, But if it's a
- 5:13Speaker 1: safety issue, I guess they're responsible forever, not just like, oh,
- 5:17Speaker 1: it died, which is kind.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Of nice to know that. That's makes me nice years
- 5:21Speaker 4: to check it it. Next, I've got a.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Money win from Jessica, who said she's excellent name scored
- 5:27Speaker 5: her fourth too Good to Go surprise bag for Baker's Delight.
- 5:31Speaker 5: She said, ten dollars for so many items, and what
- 5:33Speaker 5: she's done is she's popped them aside for school lunches.
- 5:36Speaker 1: For the week.
- 5:36Speaker 4: That's actually sight, which I always genius.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I now have an eighteen month old who is absolutely
- 5:42Speaker 1: obsessed with the Apple Scrolls Bakers. Yeah, and like it
- 5:47Speaker 1: makes sense if I'm at the supermarket or whatever and
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I need to get Harvey like an
- 5:51Speaker 1: afternoon snack, and I don't want to like get him
- 5:53Speaker 1: a sugary whatever. I feel like an Apple Scrolls mainly
- 5:56Speaker 1: bred and like the anyway he flaps his arm. She's
- 6:00Speaker 1: so excited, like like as we walk up to Baker's Delight,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and it's now become a thing because I buy my
- 6:05Speaker 1: like just daily bread. There he like looks at it
- 6:08Speaker 1: and flaps his hands, and I'm like, how do I
- 6:10Speaker 1: not like, how do you not get in the little scrut? Like, guys,
- 6:13Speaker 1: can you please start making mini versions because like an
- 6:16Speaker 1: eighteen month old holding this scroll, but he knocks the
- 6:20Speaker 1: whole thing off. I don't know how.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Oh my god, so excited.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Anyway, we love a little bakers size treat absolutely. Next,
- 6:28Speaker 5: I've got a money in from Anna, who said a
- 6:29Speaker 5: friend of hers is moving out for the first time
- 6:32Speaker 5: and they ask for help with budgeting, so she sent
- 6:34Speaker 5: them that she's on the money budget, which her and
- 6:36Speaker 5: her partner loved. And so now her friend is listening
- 6:38Speaker 5: to the audio book she's gotten up based on her
- 6:41Speaker 5: suggestion to help with the budget breakdowns, and she's asking
- 6:44Speaker 5: how to work out all of the best for the
- 6:45Speaker 5: utilities for the new place. And Anna says she loves
- 6:48Speaker 5: being able to share what she learned through she's on
- 6:50Speaker 5: the money with her friends.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Gogea power of women. See I've never met a woman
- 6:55Speaker 1: who's been empowered that hasn't then gone on to empower
- 6:58Speaker 1: other women.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Go forth and the good word.
- 7:03Speaker 5: And then lastly, this week, I've got a money win
- 7:05Speaker 5: from Sheila, who said she swapped her prepaid plan to
- 7:08Speaker 5: Boost and got their one year of data for two
- 7:11Speaker 5: hundred and fifty dollars, plus.
- 7:13Speaker 4: She got thirty two dollars lush back.
- 7:15Speaker 5: Her current prepaid plan is thirty five dollars a month,
- 7:17Speaker 5: so she'll save around two hundred bucks a year.
- 7:19Speaker 1: That's such a good deal. Yeah, that's a great money win.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that's it.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I love that. When it comes to broke tips, what
- 7:26Speaker 1: are you going to put on the table?
- 7:28Speaker 3: Well, actually, really quickly, the chat GPT or AI thing
- 7:31Speaker 3: reminded me, this isn't a broake tip.
- 7:32Speaker 2: This is a free one from back your broke.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Tip though, just tip, just tip.
- 7:37Speaker 2: My girlfriend uses chatty.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I don't use chat gpt for environmental but the way
- 7:41Speaker 3: I said, I'm like, if I'm not using it, that
- 7:43Speaker 3: frees someone else up to use it. But anyway, I
- 7:45Speaker 3: don't know if that's how it works. But my girlfriend
- 7:47Speaker 3: uses it to get like meal plans done because she
- 7:49Speaker 3: used to pay like eighty bucks a week for a
- 7:51Speaker 3: meal plan and.
- 7:51Speaker 1: So now she just asks chat geept and they do
- 7:53Speaker 1: it also.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Smart and then she says, organize this into a shopping
- 7:56Speaker 3: list and it does.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Stop her crazy. I Actually I love the fact that
- 8:01Speaker 1: AI can help us in such a good way. Yeah,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I know, there's like a whole host of like environmental
- 8:06Speaker 1: conversation to have around this, and on our investing episode. Actually,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I did an investing episode a couple of weeks ago.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I recorded it with Brooke and we're talking about like
- 8:15Speaker 1: shares that we were following, and I was talking about
- 8:18Speaker 1: an investment that is essentially creating AI opportunities without the
- 8:23Speaker 1: environmental impact, and that would be really exciting. But yeah,
- 8:26Speaker 1: I find it so helpful the fact that you could
- 8:28Speaker 1: go do like a really fancy meal plan that you
- 8:31Speaker 1: were paying so much for before, basically for free. Totally
- 8:34Speaker 1: like the idea that we can kind of upgrade and
- 8:37Speaker 1: glow up our lives on our own. Oh so good.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Yes, Like it takes a bit of that mental load, absolutely,
- 8:43Speaker 3: and it's like if it's free, you know, And sorry,
- 8:47Speaker 3: women already have so much mental load.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I know that there's environmental impacts, but right
- 8:51Speaker 1: now we're just girls and we're just doing what we can.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Fully, so I think it's great.
- 8:56Speaker 3: So as for broke tips, the first one comes from
- 8:59Speaker 3: Marie Maurice's Cinemas members can enjoy ten dollar movie tickets
- 9:03Speaker 3: at Events Cinema at the Moment, which really reminded me
- 9:06Speaker 3: that this week I went to Lido.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Or I Love The Leader in Hawthorne. It was like
- 9:11Speaker 1: five dollars for a ticket and then vegan. It's made
- 9:14Speaker 1: with coconuts, go and salt, and it is so good.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Not that I'm vegan anymore, but I feel like I
- 9:20Speaker 1: have the responsibility that as a past vegan, I should
- 9:23Speaker 1: share all the vegan hacks and tips and tricks. They
- 9:25Speaker 1: do a vegan chock top.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Yeah, they do Billy Van creamy.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Oh my god, I love That's a great day.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's my favorite ice cream shop. And they do a vegan.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Chuck top exactly right.
- 9:37Speaker 3: They also do ten dollar popcorn and drink, which I
- 9:39Speaker 3: feel like is a bargain.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Very good. They're very reasonable and very reasonable if you
- 9:43Speaker 1: go to The Leader, I believe once a month on
- 9:45Speaker 1: a Wednesday, they do comedy.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Oh course, so cute, right, and it's a really cool
- 9:49Speaker 2: cinema as well.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Gabby, who used to work for us, still goes to
- 9:53Speaker 1: comedy on like a Wednesday night occasionally, like really cheap
- 9:56Speaker 1: tickets because it's like local comedians and just like so cute.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That's a very little maybe date night for broke down
- 10:03Speaker 1: maybe day night.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 10:05Speaker 3: The sex one come from someone named Jess, who also
- 10:08Speaker 3: is my girlfriend.
- 10:11Speaker 1: We've got a Jess on the show. You had a
- 10:13Speaker 1: money win from a Jess. A Jest now who is
- 10:16Speaker 1: your girlfriend? Who is going to give her a broad
- 10:18Speaker 1: tip because you always steal her stuff?
- 10:21Speaker 3: It is so she sent me this reel of this
- 10:24Speaker 3: girl who was showing us a Tony chocolatey Aldi version
- 10:27Speaker 3: that like four dollars.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I think your choco changer.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Yes, but isn't it made by the.
- 10:34Speaker 2: By Tony stuff? And it's four dollars?
- 10:36Speaker 1: That's a money win. I can't remember the last time
- 10:39Speaker 1: a chocolate was under five dollars. I know you guys.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Isn't it insane the fact that a block of chocolate
- 10:45Speaker 1: now has to crack a note to me, that's crazy.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Sorry that his eight dollars absolutely not that great crazy
- 10:53Speaker 1: but like five and stuff? That to me is insane
- 10:56Speaker 1: because I don't buy blocks of chocolate, like that's just
- 11:00Speaker 1: not how I'm going to do it, because I will
- 11:01Speaker 1: buy the family sized pack of like what are they
- 11:04Speaker 1: fun sized caramel like Wallace and smash all them. I'm
- 11:06Speaker 1: not going to waste it on a block, like sure, no,
- 11:09Speaker 1: that's not my circuit CARAMELI block. But if I'm cooking,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I'm like, oh okay, I'll buy like a block of
- 11:14Speaker 1: chocolate to spreader off the top of my caramel slice.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Well, I use it for a Rockie Road now.
- 11:19Speaker 1: For the office, or baking for friends, or baking for family,
- 11:22Speaker 1: or even just baking for your mental health is now
- 11:25Speaker 1: as much as therapy anyway.
- 11:28Speaker 2: So my one my boat tip, it's called Wonky Coffee.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I saw like a real on Instagram, and basically their
- 11:35Speaker 3: whole purpose is to reduce waste, but they do focus
- 11:37Speaker 3: on like coffee, so like espressopods and things like that.
- 11:40Speaker 3: So you might find like a box of one hundred
- 11:42Speaker 3: and espressopods. It's not super cheap, it's like between sixty
- 11:45Speaker 3: five to seventy five dollars, but I know that the
- 11:47Speaker 3: espressopods are like they can be up to like one
- 11:49Speaker 3: hundred dollars for a one hundred pack.
- 11:51Speaker 1: You know that's actually insane to me. Yeah, like the
- 11:53Speaker 1: idea that at like and I've never owned an espresso machine.
- 11:57Speaker 1: So maybe people who do can correct me. But like
- 11:59Speaker 1: when I the maths on it, I was like, this
- 12:01Speaker 1: is astronomical. Like I used to have the Audi coffee machine, which,
- 12:04Speaker 1: by the way, slaps their coffee amazing, the purple one,
- 12:08Speaker 1: the best one. Can't remember what number that is. But
- 12:10Speaker 1: then also I like upgraded. I had a Snag one,
- 12:13Speaker 1: but then I could buy the Levatza Pods. The Levatza
- 12:16Speaker 1: Pods good coffee, but also much cheaper than Espresso. Still
- 12:20Speaker 1: like I just yeah, okay, like don't get me wrong,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Like could I technically buy it and not be financially
- 12:26Speaker 1: impacted that much? Yes, I could. It's not the bloody
- 12:28Speaker 1: point though. I hate when things take the piece.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I know, Like well, and that's why I guess it's
- 12:34Speaker 3: good because it's like, you know, you might get a
- 12:36Speaker 3: bag of coffee beans that are just like could have
- 12:38Speaker 3: been thrown out. I know, that's kind of like compost
- 12:40Speaker 3: it's a bit different, but in Espresso pods, it's a
- 12:43Speaker 3: box of one hundred that are just like random ones
- 12:45Speaker 3: that have been It's like a lucky dip sort of situation.
- 12:47Speaker 3: It's like all the ones that are kind of not
- 12:49Speaker 3: going to be used or maybe thrown out or something.
- 12:51Speaker 2: They'll kind of like box it up and.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Their still in day and stuff.
- 12:54Speaker 2: They're yea all good, they're still good. They're just like bonky.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I kind of like that. It's like the odd Bunch
- 13:00Speaker 1: at the supermarket. People buy from the odd Bunch. I
- 13:04Speaker 1: believe Coles and Willies have their own version of like
- 13:07Speaker 1: the odd Bunch, But I always buy like my carrots
- 13:11Speaker 1: and my lemons and stuff that I'm like, sorry, it
- 13:14Speaker 1: doesn't matter if the carrot's wonky, like you're gonna cut
- 13:16Speaker 1: it up anyway. And lemons, I'm sorry, lemons are already expensive.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna buy the odd bunch, like, I don't care
- 13:23Speaker 1: if it's got a brown spot on the outside. The
- 13:25Speaker 1: only thing I won't buy that has brown spots is bananas.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Like sorry, if there's a brown spot on a banana,
- 13:32Speaker 1: immediately canceled. That's immediately going too banana bread. Wow.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I only eat brown spotted bananas.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Ripeness is highly divisive.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Eat brown spotted bananas.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I like an old old banana.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Is almost green criminal. I jess, like, you know, just
- 13:55Speaker 1: when you buy the banana, I usually buy them and
- 13:57Speaker 1: they've got like the little green tips and then the
- 13:59Speaker 1: next day, the second the green has gone, they're edible,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and then a few days after that once they start
- 14:04Speaker 1: to brown, I'm sorry, that's gone to God. It's actually
- 14:09Speaker 1: no longer my responsibility, Like my digestive system says no, Wow,
- 14:14Speaker 1: would anything bad happen if I ate it? Absolutely not.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I taste so good it gives me the ick. No,
- 14:18Speaker 1: it doesn't taste good.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Sweeter I would say it's much more banana. I think
- 14:22Speaker 4: the riper. It's the more like strap banana.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That's a banana.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I do have a baby, and at the moment he's
- 14:28Speaker 1: not that picky. I know things can change, but at
- 14:31Speaker 1: eighteen months old he will take any banana. So he
- 14:34Speaker 1: gets the bananas with the brown spots, taking one for
- 14:37Speaker 1: the team.
- 14:38Speaker 2: You're raising a brown spotted banana kid. I think he'll change.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I think he'll become a picky eater like miss jessic Ricci,
- 14:47Speaker 1: and we.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Can only hope.
- 14:49Speaker 1: What else have you got, Beck?
- 14:50Speaker 2: Well, that's actually me for today.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I love that for us. Let's go to a really
- 14:54Speaker 1: quick break because we're going to talk about whether opening
- 14:56Speaker 1: a joint investment account is a good idea. On the
- 14:59Speaker 1: other side, and something that you slid into our DMS
- 15:01Speaker 1: about which I think is a very good conversation to have.
- 15:04Speaker 1: How to protect yourself when your partner has a gambling addiction,
- 15:07Speaker 1: so guys, don't go anywhere.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 15:15Speaker 4: money dilemma.
- 15:18Speaker 6: Hi. There, have you got a money dilemma you just

- 15:29Speaker 6: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 15:32Speaker 6: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 15:35Speaker 6: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 15:37Speaker 6: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 15:41Speaker 7: Hi, friends, I'm wanting some advice on investing as a couple.
- 15:45Speaker 7: I currently invest on shares us by myself, and we're
- 15:49Speaker 7: not really ready to go to a financial advisor just
- 15:52Speaker 7: yet to start investing, but we do want to get
- 15:54Speaker 7: started on investing in some sort of way. Ideally, we'd
- 15:58Speaker 7: like to micro invest, but jointly in both of our names, somehow,
- 16:03Speaker 7: almost like a Charesias that we both have access to,
- 16:06Speaker 7: like a joint account. I don't know if there's an
- 16:09Speaker 7: app like that, or there's some other way that we
- 16:12Speaker 7: can do it where we both have access to it.
- 16:14Speaker 7: Any advice would be amazing, though, thank you.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Ooh yes, I mean I haven't looked into it, so
- 16:21Speaker 5: I really don't know if something like that is. My
- 16:24Speaker 5: best guess would be I thought that shares had to
- 16:27Speaker 5: be held under a singular name. I could be wrong
- 16:30Speaker 5: about that. Like, if it was me personally, I would
- 16:32Speaker 5: just say, we'll both have accounts. We can invest in
- 16:34Speaker 5: the same things if we want them to look exactly
- 16:36Speaker 5: the same. If you're saying you want a micro investor,
- 16:38Speaker 5: you can turn on your round ups, you know, shazys.
- 16:40Speaker 5: There's new minimum investments so you can invest as much
- 16:42Speaker 5: or as little as you want. You can use those
- 16:43Speaker 5: different features like the roundups that want to invest whatever. Yeah,
- 16:47Speaker 5: but yeah, for me, it's it's kind of just not
- 16:49Speaker 5: worth a headache. And I don't really know why you
- 16:52Speaker 5: would feel the need to have it owned jointly.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Well, you can open a joint investment account, but the
- 16:57Speaker 1: key thing to know here is how ownership is going
- 17:00Speaker 1: to work if things then change down the track, right,
- 17:03Speaker 1: So depending on how the account is set up, you
- 17:05Speaker 1: and your partner might both remain legally tied to that
- 17:08Speaker 1: account if you don't like sell everything down. Even after
- 17:11Speaker 1: a breakup. A lot of the time you're not actually
- 17:14Speaker 1: able to just drop one person's name off the account
- 17:18Speaker 1: and have the other person just continue to own the
- 17:20Speaker 1: investment on their own, which can be really frustrating because
- 17:23Speaker 1: you're like, well, I don't want to incur capital gains
- 17:25Speaker 1: taxes or have to pay a whole heap of money
- 17:27Speaker 1: or even sell a good investment just because I went
- 17:29Speaker 1: through a breakup. So this means you'd either have to
- 17:32Speaker 1: continue owning the investment together or agree to sell it
- 17:35Speaker 1: and then split the proceeds. So before jumping in, I'd
- 17:38Speaker 1: really look at the account type, then how it's set up,
- 17:42Speaker 1: and what that would actually mean if you separated in
- 17:45Speaker 1: the future. It honestly might be easier for the future
- 17:47Speaker 1: if you did what Jess suggested and just like held
- 17:50Speaker 1: separate accounts. Is there anything else do you think you
- 17:52Speaker 1: want to add better?
- 17:54Speaker 3: I think you've got to handle on it into this spece.
- 17:57Speaker 1: You dam god. So I'm excited for this one, but
- 18:02Speaker 1: I'm also like not excited in the same way. Oh
- 18:05Speaker 1: my god, I'm so happy to do it. I'm like, Okay,
- 18:07Speaker 1: we actually need to talk about this because I feel
- 18:09Speaker 1: like it's come up a few times in our community recently,
- 18:13Speaker 1: whether it's something that you've discovered about your partner or
- 18:15Speaker 1: it's something that you've known about, but it's kind of
- 18:17Speaker 1: starting to blow out of proportion and impact your life.
- 18:19Speaker 1: So here's our DM high she sheeese. On the money,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I have a money and life dilemma. I recently found
- 18:25Speaker 1: out my husband has been fired from work due to
- 18:27Speaker 1: a gambling addiction. This is not the first time he's
- 18:30Speaker 1: had this problem, and we are trying to get him
- 18:33Speaker 1: the help he needs. However, I'm wanting to protect myself
- 18:36Speaker 1: and our house so that he's unable to use it
- 18:38Speaker 1: as collateral in the future. What would be the best
- 18:41Speaker 1: way to do this? And I'm also wanting to know
- 18:44Speaker 1: what the community would do in this situation.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I'm curious about how it must be quite significant if
- 18:52Speaker 3: he lost his job, because you know, I, for example,
- 18:55Speaker 3: like I'll play a multi on sports Bear, but it's
- 18:57Speaker 3: like nothing that any employee would have known about.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Like I have to have blending.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I've heard of it before where people are like gambling
- 19:04Speaker 1: addiction isn't something that like, you know, you're placing like
- 19:07Speaker 1: a little multi at lunchtime. That's like and that not
- 19:10Speaker 1: just something for you. They are tracking like the horses
- 19:13Speaker 1: or the dogs or something all day every day day.
- 19:16Speaker 1: They're at work and they're placing bets on work computers
- 19:18Speaker 1: and they're not doing their hours because they're distracted by something.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So it wouldn't have been and like this is just
- 19:24Speaker 1: me extrapolating it out. Maybe they're gambling on work stuff.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Who knows, there could be six million things, but it's
- 19:29Speaker 1: very unlikely that your workplace found out you had a
- 19:31Speaker 1: sports bet account and goes, oh, that's not in line
- 19:33Speaker 1: with out knows, Yes, that's nothing to do with it.
- 19:36Speaker 1: It's more about that would usually impact your role. Okay,
- 19:39Speaker 1: that makes so much what you seak off to the
- 19:41Speaker 1: bathroom every five minutes to place multi? Do you know
- 19:44Speaker 1: what I mean? Like, so they're not firing you because
- 19:46Speaker 1: you've got a gambling addiction. They're firing you because you've
- 19:49Speaker 1: got your need ability to do your job. Oh my god,
- 19:52Speaker 1: totally Okay, so this is the underlying reason would be
- 19:55Speaker 1: like cool, it's your gambling addiction. That's what you're doing
- 19:57Speaker 1: the bathroom.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's so fair. That is a really really
- 20:00Speaker 3: tricky one. And I'm it sounds like you're very supportive,
- 20:03Speaker 3: and that is really really nice because addictions, man like
- 20:07Speaker 3: it is so like it doesn't make like, you know,
- 20:10Speaker 3: I've got a vaping addiction, you know, like I and
- 20:12Speaker 3: and if someone says you can't vape, then all I
- 20:14Speaker 3: can think about is vaping. But I don't think about
- 20:16Speaker 3: it before then, just like when someone says you can't
- 20:18Speaker 3: do it or something like that. So it's like your
- 20:20Speaker 3: mind just manifests things in so many different ways, and
- 20:22Speaker 3: you become addicted to things just for no reason. Like
- 20:26Speaker 3: I'm sure he didn't go into this thinking he would
- 20:28Speaker 3: be at this point, but it sometimes takes over and
- 20:34Speaker 3: and so it's really good that you're supporting him and
- 20:37Speaker 3: he's trying to get the help he needs.
- 20:39Speaker 1: So it's really lovely because a lot of people would
- 20:41Speaker 1: be like, get out of my house. I don't want
- 20:43Speaker 1: to have anything to do with.
- 20:44Speaker 6: You, I know.
- 20:44Speaker 3: And I think that if it's to the point where
- 20:47Speaker 3: it's like affecting your like it feels very black and white,
- 20:51Speaker 3: like if if someone gambled away your money or your car,
- 20:55Speaker 3: or your shared things. It's like the black and white
- 20:58Speaker 3: version of that is you're awful, why would you do that?
- 21:01Speaker 2: And then the gray area is like.
- 21:04Speaker 3: You are really like you don't you probably aren't a
- 21:06Speaker 3: bad person, like, but imagine being so you know, like
- 21:10Speaker 3: you can't see anything else, Like it kind of takes
- 21:13Speaker 3: that part of you away, the part of you that's
- 21:15Speaker 3: like I would literally never gamble away my partner's car.
- 21:19Speaker 3: It takes that away from you, Like it's like you,
- 21:21Speaker 3: it's just it's a it's a beast, it's a monster.
- 21:23Speaker 3: It's like uncontrollable. So like an addiction is an addiction,
- 21:26Speaker 3: you know. So I'm like, I really feel for this
- 21:27Speaker 3: person and the family and our listener. So it's really
- 21:31Speaker 3: good that you're getting support. Unfortunately, there does. It does
- 21:34Speaker 3: get to a point though, where it's like you love
- 21:36Speaker 3: someone so much, but you can't be around it if
- 21:39Speaker 3: there's not any.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Progress, I really don't.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I really don't have any useful advice other than support
- 21:47Speaker 3: up until a point, and you know, never shame anyone
- 21:50Speaker 3: for what they're going through. But if it gets to
- 21:53Speaker 3: a point where it's really negatively impacting you, then I
- 21:56Speaker 3: think you should maybe think about removing yourself from the situation.
- 21:59Speaker 3: And as heartbreaking as that is, but that's it's not
- 22:02Speaker 3: financial anything that doesn't really help.
- 22:04Speaker 2: But I think that's what.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Addiction is really serious, and it's really heartbreaking, and sometimes
- 22:09Speaker 1: you can try all you might and it just not
- 22:13Speaker 1: be successful. It blows my mind how much it can
- 22:15Speaker 1: impact families, and it just it literally breaks my heart. Jess,
- 22:21Speaker 1: what would you do?
- 22:22Speaker 4: It's so hard.
- 22:22Speaker 5: I want to send lots of love to our listener
- 22:24Speaker 5: and to her partner because exactly as you said, Beck,
- 22:26Speaker 5: it is such a monster all of its own, and
- 22:30Speaker 5: you know the flow on impacts beyond financial. I think
- 22:33Speaker 5: gambling is such a slippery slope. We did a really
- 22:35Speaker 5: good episode on gambling quite a few years ago now
- 22:37Speaker 5: that will link in the irrelevant irrelevant along with some
- 22:40Speaker 5: gamblers help resources for anyone who's got someone that they
- 22:44Speaker 5: know if yourself maybe need a little bit of help,
- 22:46Speaker 5: there's absolutely no shame in that.
- 22:47Speaker 4: We'll link to some things that you might find.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Useful, no no like, and I guess to context yours
- 22:52Speaker 1: that you said before, like you've got a vaping addiction.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I have an addictive personality and I am just very lucky.
- 22:59Speaker 1: I think to have always known that I've had an
- 23:02Speaker 1: addictive personality, and so therefore I've had to say no
- 23:05Speaker 1: to a lot of things in life because I'm like, no,
- 23:08Speaker 1: I won't try that, because I kind of know that
- 23:11Speaker 1: that's a slippery slope for me. Like I know a
- 23:14Speaker 1: lot more about my personality than a lot of people do.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And no, I didn't try smoking when I was younger
- 23:21Speaker 1: because I kind of knew that it would become a thing.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Like I was just like, I know the peer pressure
- 23:27Speaker 1: is going to get to me, but no, I'm going
- 23:29Speaker 1: to say no here because like I just kind of
- 23:31Speaker 1: knew that that would become an issue for me. And
- 23:34Speaker 1: like I think in every other and addiction can show
- 23:38Speaker 1: up obviously very negatively, but I think it can also
- 23:41Speaker 1: have a very good impact on your life. If you
- 23:43Speaker 1: are the type of person like me where you've got
- 23:45Speaker 1: an addictive personality, good luck stopping me from running my businesses.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Good luck stopping me When I have an idea or
- 23:51Speaker 1: want to do something, ask poor Jess. I'll be like
- 23:53Speaker 1: I want to do this, and Jess, we'll be like, no,
- 23:55Speaker 1: we're not doing that, and I'd be like, weird, because
- 23:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it anyway, not something that you're inherently
- 24:02Speaker 1: a bad person. It's just something that you really struggle with,
- 24:05Speaker 1: and like there's so much research around it. I mean,
- 24:07Speaker 1: Roy Morgan did some research that looked at the rate
- 24:10Speaker 1: of online sports betting in ages eighteen to twenty four,
- 24:13Speaker 1: so still just babies, and it showed that already out
- 24:16Speaker 1: of those people, likely one in four would develop a
- 24:19Speaker 1: serious gambling problem on a sports betting app. Yeah, it's
- 24:23Speaker 1: very common.
- 24:24Speaker 5: Yeah, So to answer the question about protecting your assets,
- 24:27Speaker 5: I would say you need to seek legal advice because
- 24:29Speaker 5: I think it'd be quite complicated when you're married, because
- 24:31Speaker 5: that de facto element comes in where even if you
- 24:34Speaker 5: were to move the asset out of his name. So
- 24:37Speaker 5: my best guess would be you probably need to take
- 24:39Speaker 5: him off the title for the property, but not an expert.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Definitely speak to someone who is.
- 24:43Speaker 1: That's good advice and just to like collaborate with your response.
- 24:47Speaker 1: You absolutely can do that. Legally, the problem will be
- 24:50Speaker 1: stamp duty, and I'm assuming that if it's a financial issue,
- 24:54Speaker 1: we don't have a heap of money to throw at this,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and we don't need to pay stamp duty on fifty
- 24:58Speaker 1: percent of your property. Yeah, so I've got an answer,
- 25:00Speaker 1: but like that great response. Yes, could absolutely do that,
- 25:05Speaker 1: but it might be expensive.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Yes, which is why I would kind of say, get
- 25:10Speaker 5: speak to someone who can kind of look at your
- 25:11Speaker 5: situation holistically in advice as best, because I think there
- 25:14Speaker 5: are so many exactly except there's tax, there's all of
- 25:17Speaker 5: these different things. There are legalities regarding like even if
- 25:20Speaker 5: something's not in someone's name, they're still entitled to a
- 25:22Speaker 5: portion of it, often under de facto. So I would
- 25:25Speaker 5: be seeking like some form of legal counsel. I think,
- 25:28Speaker 5: so someone who can look at it and look at
- 25:30Speaker 5: the situation give you a recommendation as to what will.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Be best to protect the assets.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that Sometimes it's annoying, Like I know
- 25:39Speaker 5: that you might not want to front the money, but
- 25:41Speaker 5: I think sometimes the best thing you can do is
- 25:43Speaker 5: invest in good advice that can.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Really see ali you. Yeah, see a lawyer. Absolutely. So
- 25:48Speaker 1: you could also change your contract depends how it's been done,
- 25:53Speaker 1: but adjusting your title from joint tenants to tenants in common.
- 25:57Speaker 1: So instead of being like equal but also equally responsible
- 26:01Speaker 1: therefore equally accessible, you would limit it by shares, so
- 26:05Speaker 1: your fifty percent would be more protected. That's going to
- 26:08Speaker 1: save you a bit because you don't have to pay
- 26:09Speaker 1: stamp duty and stuff for that. But the one thing
- 26:11Speaker 1: that I would want to do, like if I was
- 26:13Speaker 1: really worried and I didn't want to pay stamp duty,
- 26:15Speaker 1: I would go and talk to a lawyer about registering
- 26:18Speaker 1: a caveat on the property, which means it cannot be used.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And this again not legal advice, just what I've seen
- 26:25Speaker 1: other people do, and you need to go talk to
- 26:27Speaker 1: your own lawyer, but registering a caveat, which is a
- 26:30Speaker 1: legal notice that is lodged against the property through your
- 26:33Speaker 1: state's land Titles office, and what that does is stops
- 26:38Speaker 1: it being sold or used for security without your consent.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And so it's not something that usually individuals register. But
- 26:44Speaker 1: like right now, I own a property, but because I've
- 26:47Speaker 1: got a mortgage, my bank has a caveat over the
- 26:50Speaker 1: top of that mortgage. Meaning I can't go sell my
- 26:52Speaker 1: property to Beck and then she gives me the cash
- 26:56Speaker 1: and I keep it. They've got a caveat that says
- 26:57Speaker 1: if this property is sold, that's for me. And also
- 27:00Speaker 1: you need my consent to do that, and that means
- 27:03Speaker 1: that they're protecting themselves because they've got this massive loan.
- 27:06Speaker 1: But you can actually also register a caveatool, which might
- 27:10Speaker 1: make you feel a little bit more protected. I would
- 27:13Speaker 1: also not have joint finances. Yeah, see how, I'm like, No,
- 27:16Speaker 1: it's all personal. Sorry, we don't have joint finances. When
- 27:19Speaker 1: we're going through things like this, you need to financially
- 27:22Speaker 1: protect yourself and set yourself up securely. You have your
- 27:26Speaker 1: own emergency fund, you have your own banking access because
- 27:29Speaker 1: otherwise you're both potentially going to be impacted by this
- 27:33Speaker 1: even more than you think. And then obviously we will
- 27:36Speaker 1: put a whole heap of resources in the show notes.
- 27:39Speaker 1: We will put resources to gambling help online, the National
- 27:42Speaker 1: Debt Helpline, which we are obsessed with. And I would
- 27:45Speaker 1: honestly want to talk to a family lawyer and also
- 27:48Speaker 1: a counselor yeah, and go from there.
- 27:50Speaker 4: But sending you both lots of love.
- 27:51Speaker 5: I think it's really great that you want to support
- 27:53Speaker 5: and it's great that you're thinking about protecting and I'm
- 27:55Speaker 5: sure that there are lots of options and resources out
- 27:58Speaker 5: there that are available to help you.
- 28:00Speaker 1: But you about our community also helped, which is obviously
- 28:03Speaker 1: my favorite part. Like our community is so beautiful. We
- 28:06Speaker 1: asked them first, like we had a few questions. I said,
- 28:09Speaker 1: has your partner or someone you loved ever struggled with gambling?
- 28:12Speaker 1: And you know what, I'm glad to say that. Seventy
- 28:14Speaker 1: seven percent said no, but fourteen percent said yes, a
- 28:18Speaker 1: family member, and nine percent said yes, my partner. What
- 28:22Speaker 1: would you do in this situation? So forty four percent
- 28:25Speaker 1: said legal agreement to protect aussets, twenty four percent said
- 28:28Speaker 1: separate finances completely, another twenty four percent said control access
- 28:33Speaker 1: to money and credit cards, and eight percent said give
- 28:36Speaker 1: them a last chance ultimatum. We obviously then went to
- 28:39Speaker 1: the community and said, hey, like, what's your two cents?
- 28:42Speaker 1: But I want to just shout out really quickly first
- 28:45Speaker 1: how bloody beautiful our community is. Because we got so
- 28:49Speaker 1: many messages of support and messages of like, hey, I'm
- 28:53Speaker 1: going through that as well. It's really common. And I
- 28:56Speaker 1: obviously can't spend the whole episode reading all of those
- 28:58Speaker 1: out because whilst if they're not answering the question, so
- 29:02Speaker 1: I didn't want to go through them too much, but
- 29:04Speaker 1: I'll read out one that I thought hit the nail
- 29:07Speaker 1: on the head, she said, sending this listener a hug.
- 29:10Speaker 1: They sound like an absolute boss babe, tackling all that
- 29:12Speaker 1: life throws at them. Maybe yeap nailing it And then
- 29:16Speaker 1: getting into the advice our community. First person said, lock
- 29:21Speaker 1: things like your ID and credit report to avoid going
- 29:23Speaker 1: on to loans without your knowledge. Another person said, organize
- 29:27Speaker 1: a post nup. If he can see that he has
- 29:30Speaker 1: a problem, he will be happy to sign. Another person said,
- 29:34Speaker 1: I went through drug addiction and wish my partner at
- 29:37Speaker 1: the time had taken control of all my money, which
- 29:40Speaker 1: is kind of true. But then it also and.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Like it puts a burden on the partner.
- 29:44Speaker 1: It's not just a burden, it's also like addiction is ugly,
- 29:49Speaker 1: Like addiction is, it brings out the worst in people.
- 29:53Speaker 1: It does not let you shine. And if you put
- 29:56Speaker 1: a caveat over somebody who has an addiction, you're creating
- 30:00Speaker 1: even more friction in that relationship. And I'm not saying
- 30:03Speaker 1: don't do it, because I think it can be really
- 30:05Speaker 1: constructive and obviously in a lot of these situations is
- 30:08Speaker 1: for the best. But like, if I have an addiction
- 30:10Speaker 1: and you're withholding something from me, Jess, I'm not happy
- 30:14Speaker 1: with you, and I'm consistently not happy with you, and
- 30:16Speaker 1: we are going to argue about it, and I'm going
- 30:18Speaker 1: to beg you for it, and I think that we
- 30:20Speaker 1: need to use that option with a little bit of leniency,
- 30:24Speaker 1: which is why my first board of call is always
- 30:26Speaker 1: protect yourself, have your own funds, have access to your
- 30:29Speaker 1: own emergency fund. Next one is a two parter. So
- 30:35Speaker 1: someone said this happened to us. I had to take
- 30:37Speaker 1: over all our finances and he had no access to
- 30:40Speaker 1: it at all, and then said, not even spending money
- 30:43Speaker 1: because twenty dollars cash could still be gambled, and ultimately
- 30:46Speaker 1: he really appreciated it. Next person said, as much as
- 30:50Speaker 1: you love someone, they have to choose to be clean
- 30:53Speaker 1: from any kind of addiction for you and for your
- 30:55Speaker 1: family's benefit. Another person said, same page as me, caveat
- 30:59Speaker 1: your he to stop it being disposed off without your agreement.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And the last one I'll share is unfortunately, I'm currently
- 31:05Speaker 1: sorting out my own gambling addiction. It is a very
- 31:08Speaker 1: messy and slippery slope. So people in our community are
- 31:12Speaker 1: going through this. This isn't something that is Oh, that's
- 31:15Speaker 1: so uncommon. I only heard of gambling on the end
- 31:18Speaker 1: of the you know, the sports bad ads it happens
- 31:21Speaker 1: a lot and it's heartbreaking, but like, also good on
- 31:24Speaker 1: you for tackling it.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Yeah, full it takes a lot of strength.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Yeah to me, Like I'm actually going through this right now,
- 31:30Speaker 1: and it's a bloody slippery slope.
- 31:32Speaker 3: The isolation you might feel if you are in this
- 31:34Speaker 3: and you're like you've got an addiction, but then these
- 31:37Speaker 3: helplines and stuff exist because there are so many you're
- 31:40Speaker 3: not alone and just really quickly. The other thing is
- 31:42Speaker 3: that I've been listening to Alan Khar's Easy Way, which
- 31:44Speaker 3: is about vaping and smoking, but it's a really good
- 31:46Speaker 3: way to make you see what you're doing in a
- 31:49Speaker 3: completely different light, because like telling you that it's bad
- 31:51Speaker 3: for X y Z reason doesn't actually do anything. It's like, yeah,
- 31:56Speaker 3: I know that, you know, but it's like when you
- 31:57Speaker 3: when you're like I'm going to keep doing it, but
- 31:59Speaker 3: I'm going to slowly seeing it differently.
- 32:01Speaker 2: I don't know, maybe that'll be helpful.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Bit just like kind of maybe listen to that, which
- 32:04Speaker 3: is absolutely not about gambling. Maybe they have a gambling version,
- 32:07Speaker 3: but just like change the word vaping or smoking to
- 32:11Speaker 3: gambling way while you listen, and maybe that'll be helpful.
- 32:15Speaker 2: I don't know, but yeah, oh my love.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, And I think that that is a perfect
- 32:20Speaker 1: place to leave at my friends. So we will see
- 32:23Speaker 1: you right nearly on Monday for a money diary. But
- 32:25Speaker 1: have the best weekend. Bye, guys.
