- 0:01Hey, hey, Yenning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
- 0:04here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
- 0:12on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
- 0:17course, yen yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology,
- 0:22and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
- 0:28pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:31Let's do this well, hello, everybody, and welcome to
- 0:39another episode of the Yinning at Life podcast.
- 0:42I'm so seriously happy you are here today because I want to
- 0:46talk about something that I think is really going to hit
- 0:51with a lot of people, especially if you're over the age of 40.
- 0:57So let's be real here for a second.
- 1:00Life after 40 feels different, doesn't it?
- 1:05I mean, I don't mean it's bad different.
- 1:08I mean the kind of different where one morning you wake up
- 1:12and you realize, oh, like my body isn't bouncing back quite
- 1:16the way it used to. Like I remember like hacking in
- 1:23my university days, like I would go to school all day and then,
- 1:28you know, afterwards we would, you know, do some partying and
- 1:32stuff like that. I could eat like a whole pizza
- 1:34and like a pint or two or three beers and literally go to bed 5
- 1:43minutes later and crash and sleep for like 3 hours and then
- 1:47get up the next day and just do it all over again.
- 1:51And I would just spring out of bed, right?
- 1:56But now it's like those late nights got food at the last
- 2:01minute. My joints when I'm getting out
- 2:04of bed, not the same, not the same at all.
- 2:11And also, let's talk about the mind chatter.
- 2:16Like, suddenly, you know, your brain starts to get busier than
- 2:19ever, and it doesn't always want to shut down when you're trying
- 2:24to rest, right? Like, if you ever had those
- 2:26nights where it's like, I'm so tired.
- 2:28So you crawl into bed and you're literally staring at the
- 2:33ceiling. And it's like, I can't sleep.
- 2:38My mind is just rattling, right? And you know what?
- 2:43This is all OK. This is normal.
- 2:45This is part of this season of our life.
- 2:48I often call the generation over 40 as like the sandwich
- 2:56generation. I mean, not everybody, but a lot
- 2:59of the people in this category still have kids and they have
- 3:03aging parents and they're in the middle.
- 3:05And so it's like, OK, well, I'm trying to navigate my own, my
- 3:09own life, my own self-care, my work, you know, personal
- 3:13responsibilities. Then I've got my kids and then
- 3:16I've got aging parents that I'm concerned that I have to take
- 3:19care of. Right.
- 3:20But here's the important thing. Just because you're getting
- 3:24older doesn't mean you're declining.
- 3:27It doesn't mean game over. Like it's just that you know
- 3:32what it means that your body and your mind are inviting you into
- 3:36a new way of living. That's all it is.
- 3:39And it's just basically adjusting to that.
- 3:43So that's what kind of what I want to talk to you guys about
- 3:46today. And, you know, just like grab
- 3:50yourself a latte or a tea or, you know, a kombucha, whatever.
- 3:56And I want to talk about this stage of life and I also want to
- 4:01tie in how I have personally myself found yin yoga, breath
- 4:07work, meditation, acupressure, and even reflexology, they've
- 4:11all been gold. Like literally not even gold.
- 4:15Like let's talk platinum here for navigating my 40s like and
- 4:22beyond with more ease, more energy, and honestly, like a lot
- 4:27more joy. Because let's face it, when we
- 4:30get older, like we, we want to be living our best life like, so
- 4:37I want to tell you a little story, a turning point for me.
- 4:41So when I hit my 40s, I kept trying to do the same things
- 4:45that worked when I was in my 20s and 30s, right?
- 4:49Like the intense high impact workouts, late nights of just
- 4:58pushing through, right? Living on adrenaline and in the
- 5:04corporate world, just doing and doing and doing and doing.
- 5:10And for a while, you know what? It worked.
- 5:13I thought, OK, I've still got this.
- 5:15I can still do this. So what?
- 5:18I'm 42 years old, who cares? I'm indestructible.
- 5:23This is what I thought, right? But slowly, it was very, very
- 5:28slow. I started noticing some things
- 5:31wasn't sleeping as deeply. I'd wake up, you know, 1 to 3:00
- 5:36AM, which if you know, in traditional Chinese medicine is
- 5:39liver Meridian time. And I'd wake up feeling stiff in
- 5:43my body, like not quite like wake up.
- 5:46And I felt like a tin man, but I was still like, wow, like things
- 5:51are a little tight. Stressed seemed to stick around
- 5:56longer than it used to. Like I would stress about stuff
- 6:00and it'd be like 3 days of stressing about it.
- 6:04And I thought, is this, is this how it's going to be from now
- 6:08on? Is this how my life is going to
- 6:10be? And then I kind of had like a
- 6:14light bulb moment here. My body wasn't breaking down.
- 6:20My body was just aging. Like all of our bodies age like
- 6:23there is no miraculous cure out there yet for reversing the
- 6:28aging process. We can certainly slow it down,
- 6:31but we can't reverse it yet. But my body was just asking for
- 6:36something different. It didn't want me to push harder
- 6:40anymore. It wanted me to soften.
- 6:42It wanted me to listen. It wanted me to care for it in a
- 6:46whole new way. And this is where I completely
- 6:52transformed my yin yoga practice.
- 6:54Now, if you don't know me, I've been practicing yin yoga for
- 6:59over 30 years. So I started well, well, like
- 7:03when I was like, you know, late teens, early 20s.
- 7:08And I've been teaching yin for over 20 years.
- 7:14And I will tell you that my practice has changed
- 7:17dramatically because my body is changing.
- 7:21So for example, like I'm very flexible and I also am very
- 7:28hyper mobile in my joints. So when I was younger, I was a
- 7:32gymnast and a ballet dancer. So the flexibility was awesome.
- 7:39But as I started getting older, I started to realize that my
- 7:44joints weren't as happy and I was experiencing like atrophy in
- 7:51my muscles. So weakness and my yin
- 7:56practices, yin practice was actually making it worse.
- 8:00What I needed to do was I needed to start strengthening my body.
- 8:04So I started to do weight lifting, resistance training.
- 8:09I fell in love with bar. If you've ever done bar, it's
- 8:12like low impact, high reps of, you know, weight lifting
- 8:17repetitions. And it was a game changer for my
- 8:20body in terms of like making it more stable and strong so that
- 8:25as I was aging, I wasn't falling apart in my joints and in my
- 8:29muscles. But on the flip side of that, my
- 8:34body started getting tighter, right because it's getting
- 8:37stronger. So I literally over the course
- 8:42of like a couple of months went from being Uber flexible to like
- 8:46super tight. And I was like, OK, this is like
- 8:50not the way to go. I need to find a happy medium.
- 8:54So this is where in my yen practice, I started to prop
- 8:58more. I mean, the way I teach yen,
- 9:01it's always not about how it looks.
- 9:03It's about how does it feel in your body, right?
- 9:07So, So what you have to prop more, you get a better
- 9:12experience out of the practice anyway.
- 9:15And not only do you get a better experience because you're not
- 9:18trying to push through it, but your body is softening more
- 9:23because there's less resistance. And it was literally like a
- 9:27pause button that I was turning on this slowing down, holding
- 9:33things more gently, using props and allowing my body to open up
- 9:41was game changing. And because yin yoga targets
- 9:47deep connective tissue like fascia, the joints and the
- 9:50ligaments, these are exact parts of our body that start needing
- 9:55extra love after 40, right? And that's what I was really
- 10:00noticing was that, OK, I'm not, I don't have to give up yin.
- 10:04Of course I'm going to stay with my yin practice.
- 10:07Like I mean, my God, like I'd, I'd be lost without yin here,
- 10:11but it was like I just need to tweak it a little bit.
- 10:14It's kind of like giving oil to the creaky door hinge, right?
- 10:18Like my joints were feeling kind of creaky because I was also
- 10:23strengthening and tightening my body, which I need to do as I
- 10:26get older. But I was like, well, I still
- 10:28need to be flexible because you know, too strong and too tight
- 10:32is not good. Too flexible and too weak is not
- 10:35good. You need like that happy medium.
- 10:39But in shifting my in practice, you know what else I started to
- 10:43notice that was seriously so cool was that my nervous system
- 10:49regulation was unreal. Like instead of it being like it
- 10:57takes me now like an hour to an hour and a half to decompress in
- 11:01a in practice, I could decompress in 5-10 or even 15
- 11:06minutes. And I was like, whoa.
- 11:10Like after a 15 minute practice. Now after even a 5 minute yen
- 11:17practice or breath work or meditation, I can literally
- 11:22shift my nervous system. It is so amazing.
- 11:26And I remember thinking, Oh my God, like this, just this is the
- 11:32way it's, it can be. Even though my body is aging and
- 11:36let's be real, here in society, there is still a lot of stigma
- 11:41around aging, right? And I just think that that's a
- 11:46bunch of crap because the reality is everybody is aging,
- 11:52right? And everybody's body is changing
- 11:57and everybody's mind is changing, and we have to find a
- 12:04way to shut off that overactive mind and to soothe that
- 12:11overstimulated nervous system and to release all that tension
- 12:17in our body. Now, the next part of my journey
- 12:23that I want to talk about is breath work.
- 12:25Like seriously, people like, I mean, I've always done breath
- 12:29work, but then it was like, oh, there's breath work and then
- 12:33there's breath work. And listen, I'll be honest, I
- 12:39was doing breath work before, but not with the same kind of
- 12:43intention as I am now. So you know that most of us
- 12:49spend our days chest breathing, right?
- 12:51Staying in that stressed out flight or fright mode without
- 12:55even realizing it. That's the sad part is that we
- 12:58don't even realize we're there because that has become the
- 13:02normal way of being. But when you take time for deep,
- 13:11slow, intentional breathing, like I'm talking about inhaling
- 13:16through the nose and then exhaling through the mouth, it's
- 13:22like telling your body, hey, you're so safe.
- 13:27You can relax now. You can let go of all this
- 13:30stuff. And here's the crazy thing, it
- 13:35works almost instantly. A few rounds of deep belly
- 13:39breaths where literally you're inhaling through the nose for
- 13:43maybe like 4 or 5 or 6 counts, and then you're exhaling through
- 13:48an open mouth. Maybe you're even like, like
- 13:52making a sigh or some kind of sound and it's literally like
- 13:58your shoulders drop, your heart slows down, your mind starts to
- 14:02get quiet. And I'll tell you, after 40 when
- 14:08the stress hormones do a real number on our bodies and women
- 14:12here listening, you know what I'm talking about, that
- 14:15perimenopause shifting into menopause state.
- 14:19Breath work becomes so simple. It's free.
- 14:23It's always an available tool to reset.
- 14:26It's kind of like a portable space and a portable place of
- 14:32peace that you can tap into anytime.
- 14:36Like seriously, like you could be sitting at your desk and
- 14:40you'll be like, I'm just going to pause here for a second.
- 14:43I'm going to take 4 deep inhales through my nose and I'm going to
- 14:47take 4 deep exhales through my mouth.
- 14:50Boom, right there. So now let's shift.
- 14:54I want to talk about meditation because who here doesn't have
- 14:59the rambling rattle around hamster on a wheel mindset,
- 15:05right? And I'll tell you that there is
- 15:07still a little bit of stigma around what meditation means,
- 15:10right? People think it's like, oh, I'm
- 15:13going to sit in a cross legged position, total silence and then
- 15:16empty mind. And I'm just going to be like,
- 15:18Oh well, I'll tell you it doesn't work that way.
- 15:24First of all, your brain is not meant to shut down completely.
- 15:30OK? It's literally hardwired for
- 15:33thought. But here's the truth.
- 15:36Meditation isn't about change, about stopping your thoughts.
- 15:41It's about noticing them and realizing you don't have to
- 15:45follow every single thought that comes in.
- 15:48Think of it kind of like a car passing by on the highway.
- 15:52You can just sit on the side of the road and let them go by
- 15:55instead of chasing one down, right?
- 15:59Like, how many times have I caught myself in a thought?
- 16:03And I'm like, what? I'm like, I don't have to
- 16:06believe that. No goodbye, move on.
- 16:12And for me now, meditation, I mean, meditation has always been
- 16:15important to me, but now even more so.
- 16:19It's been one of the most powerful ways to bring peace
- 16:22into my life, right? Like, and it's again, it's
- 16:26simple, just put on some music. I mean, on my app, the Soulful
- 16:32Yin Yoga app, I have a section for that's just for audios.
- 16:37I mean, I have lots of breath work and meditations, but I also
- 16:42have a section that's just audios where literally you could
- 16:44put your headphones or your earbuds in and just tune into
- 16:50the music and just listen and absorb the vibration of the
- 16:54music and allow it to move through your body and calm you
- 16:57down. And then, you know, like even
- 17:00with acupressure and reflexology, which I have on my
- 17:05app as well, I blend a lot of my yin yoga practices in there with
- 17:10acupressure. And then I have a whole section
- 17:13just on reflexology. I mean, I'm still developing
- 17:15that section, but it's coming along quite nicely.
- 17:19And these tools too, with the meditation have helped me
- 17:24basically heal my body. I mean, if you know anything
- 17:29about my healing story, I was, you know, you can go back and
- 17:34take a look right at the beginning of my podcast where I
- 17:36talk about my healing crisis that I had.
- 17:40And I will tell you that all of these modalities have been like
- 17:48game changing and life transformative and helping me
- 17:52heal my body. And what I love about all of
- 17:57these practices, all these modalities, is that they're so
- 18:00accessible. You don't need fancy equipment.
- 18:03You don't need an hour of time. You just need like a couple of
- 18:06blocks, a strap or a belt or a scarf.
- 18:12You don't even need any fancy Lululemon clothes.
- 18:15Just put on your favorite sweats and hop on that yoga mat.
- 18:19And if you don't know how reflexology and acupressure
- 18:23work, if you're kind of new to those, let me just tell you that
- 18:28using your own hands to connect with your body and to connect
- 18:32with your energy is wild. Like acupressure works just like
- 18:38acupuncture, right? Like you're pressing on certain
- 18:41points, Meridian points along the a specific Meridian channel
- 18:48and you're basically, you know, moving energy and bringing the
- 18:52body back into balance. It's so easy to do on yourself
- 18:58and I love incorporating it in with the end because it just
- 19:01makes it a more amplified practice.
- 19:05Now, if you're new to reflexology, this works with
- 19:09both hands and feet, but I work with the feet where we have all
- 19:14of these incredible reflex points that link to every part
- 19:18of your body. So you know, you want to improve
- 19:21liver function like there's a point for that.
- 19:26And I will tell you that I, I call it feet playing, but it's
- 19:31not really feet playing. But when you are stimulating a
- 19:35point on your foot and you do this before you go to bed, it
- 19:38can seriously calm down your nervous system and help you get
- 19:42a better sleep. It can even help you ease
- 19:45anxiety, support digestion, release tension.
- 19:51And it's kind of like you're discovering your own body with a
- 19:55built in toolbox and you just needed the map.
- 19:58And basically I'll tell you I'm the map.
- 20:02So it's super, it's super cool. And.
- 20:07You know, when you bring all of these practices together, yen,
- 20:10breath work, meditation, acupressure, reflexology, it's
- 20:14not that you're just helping your body stay flexible or your
- 20:18mind stay calm. You're creating a whole
- 20:21lifestyle that supports you as you age.
- 20:25And especially preventative. I think of it as preventative
- 20:30medicine, right? And I want to emphasize that
- 20:36aging doesn't mean declining. It just means shifting.
- 20:40It means learning to care for yourself in ways that are
- 20:44different than what you've been used to in the past.
- 20:47There's nothing wrong with that. And what's the play?
- 20:50Pay off of all of that? Well, more energy, more peace,
- 20:54more freedom in your body and in your life, More joy in your
- 20:57days, more passion. Because let's face it, when you
- 21:00feel good, life is more fun, right?
- 21:06And honestly, this is how I've been living for years.
- 21:09And This is why I created my app, because I know what it's
- 21:14like to work with these tools and I know the impact that they
- 21:19have. But I also know a lot of people
- 21:22are like, well, I don't have these tools and I have no idea
- 21:26where to start. And some people are even like,
- 21:30well, to feel like me, I have to have hours to devote into
- 21:34practice. No, you don't.
- 21:36That's why my app is designed for busy people over the age of
- 21:4040. Whether you got 5 minutes, 15
- 21:44minutes or an hour, you will find yin yoga classes, breath
- 21:48work, meditations, step by step, reflexology, acupressure.
- 21:55You can practice as much as you want as long as you want or as
- 21:59little as you want. But everything that Ioffer in
- 22:02there fits into what I call real life.
- 22:05Even on your busiest days. And here's the best part, you
- 22:10can try my entire app, get unlimited content to all my
- 22:16videos, my audios. I even have yin yoga series up
- 22:20there for seven days free. Seven days free.
- 22:24No pressure, no strings attached.
- 22:28Just a chance for you to feel yourself in a much more calmer,
- 22:33more flexible, and more energized state of being.
- 22:38Because let's face it, at the end of the day, it's not about
- 22:43talking about these practices. It's actually about embodying
- 22:46them, right? So here's my encouragement for
- 22:52you. Just pick one little thing
- 22:55today. Maybe you're going to just lie
- 22:58down in a simple yin pose for 5 minutes.
- 23:01Maybe you're going to take 10 deep breaths before your next
- 23:04meeting. Maybe you're going to press on
- 23:08your big toe, which is the brain reflex point.
- 23:11Before you go to bed tonight, I will tell you that all these
- 23:16little choices, they start to add up.
- 23:18They compound, there's a ripple effect, and they become your way
- 23:23of telling your body and your mind.
- 23:25You know what, I've got you. I'm taking care of you.
- 23:30Life after 40 doesn't mean you're slowing down.
- 23:34It just means you're showing up differently.
- 23:37You've got way more wisdom, far more compassion, and more tools
- 23:42in your pocket than ever before, right?
- 23:48So thanks so much for hanging out with me today and press and
- 23:52play on this episode. If you really want to dive
- 23:56deeper and explore practices for yourself, I'd love to see you
- 23:59inside the Soulful Yin Yoga app. It is the number one yin yoga
- 24:06app for over 40. You get 7 days free unlimited

- 24:12I'll link it all up in the show notes.
- 24:15So until next time, folks, take a deep breath, be gentle with
- 24:20yourself and no exactly where you're meant to be.
