- 0:00Doing Marriage Well for March 10, 2026 Is your ego causing wrecks in your marriage?
- 0:06Another counterproductive behavior, using the same road I mentioned yesterday as an example.
- 0:11Jim Bob is headed to town, but he's in no hurry.
- 0:14He's been driving between 44 miles an hour and 53 miles an hour in a 60-mile-an-hour zone.
- 0:20He has a dozen frustrated folks behind him.
- 0:23Finally, they all reach that one short passing lane.
- 0:27Jim Bob does pull over to the right, but as he does so, he speeds up.
- 0:31He reaches the legal speed limit, or exceeds it.
- 0:35If the first couple of drivers behind him are frustrated enough,
- 0:38They floor it and zoom by at 75 miles an hour The passing lane ends And Jim
- 0:43Bob resumes his leisurely pace Jim Bob has been being tailgated Since well before
- 0:48the passing lane You would think he would look forward To the chance to end
- 0:52that Why does he ensure he will be tailgated The rest of the way to town?
- 0:56Highway experts say some of this is subconscious Passing lanes are wider And
- 1:01usually straighter So we feel safer Many slow drivers speed up Without even
- 1:05being aware of it But there's also ego and control If you feel challenged by
- 1:10someone trying to pass you,
- 1:12you speed up I've seen this escalate into tragedy Last year,
- 1:16a guy who didn't manage to pass before the passing lane ended Decided to go
- 1:20onto the right shoulder to pass He lost control getting back on the road and
- 1:25swerved into oncoming traffic Creating a three-car accident that killed two
- 1:29people and wounded the third The reckless driver was relatively unhurt and was arrested,
- 1:34The 17-year-old girl who upset him died, along with an innocent bystander.
- 1:39Speeding up to prevent passing can get you and others hurt or killed.
- 1:43When we traveled by RV, I got in the habit of pulling into the right lane and
- 1:47easing back on my speed a bit so as many cars as possible could pass.
- 1:51It was kind to them and safer for us. My life is worth more than my ego.
- 1:56So how are we applying this to marriage? Have you ever upped the stakes with
- 1:59your spouse for no reason other than pride or control?
- 2:02Rather than laying the pass, as it were You exerted dominance Or maybe you acted
- 2:07passive-aggressively You did maintain your pride And you were in control But at what cost?
- 2:13It's usually wiser and safer to pull over, slow down, and let them go.
- 2:18Address it at a later time when you're both calm. Don't let your ego push you
- 2:23into a horrible accident.
- 2:24This is Paul, and pride never helps us do marriage well.
