- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Hi there.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Corinne, and this is Okay But Are You Good?
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Where we check in ourselves on a weekly basis to see how we're doing.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Are we living our best lives or are we just trying to get by?
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Another week of living the dream.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: I just finished my first half marathon in San Francisco, and I'm very excited.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And this was way different than the full marathon I did.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And it came with its own challenges.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: And you know, I really had to push through for this one.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I feel like in a different way than I had for the full, which is crazy because I thought it would be a lot easier since it was half of a full marathon, right?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: And I just really learned a lot.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And I learned that like I need to really listen to my body and know my limits and like take care of myself and not just like push things out so far and like delay improvements and whatnot.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And we'll get we'll get all into that.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So with this half marathon, I really wanted this extra metal uh that you get if you run in SF in LA, and I got it, yay.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Um and you know, I just wanted to keep up my goal and like keep working towards something.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: But what I hadn't done is factor in of like how I was gonna feel after my first marathon and recover from that and also train for another one just a couple months later.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: For me, like I should have waited, and but we can't go back and we can only go forward and learn and know our limitations.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I think I would have done a lot of things differently.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I would have started physical therapy sooner.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I would have tried to toughen it out and you know, we'll get better.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Like I was in excruciating pain for months, and I was like, okay, you just keep doing this.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And I wasn't able to work out like my normal.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I've only been going to PT for a couple weeks and I really feel like my old self.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So it's like, why do I why do I do this to myself?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Why do I like just hope I can get it done and like, you know, do things my way and it's all gonna work out?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Like, yes, it has worked out, but I think I'm just learning the hard way.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And I wish I would have just started certain things sooner.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And like, life is about learning.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: You can't grow if you don't learn and get through some challenges that you know, it's funny because I did this to myself.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I paid for this.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: So leading up to the race and just after the race, I really realized like, okay, my goals are changing.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: It's not just like doing it for the sake of doing it.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I want to do it right and I want to do it pain free.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And that's all I really care about now is like getting the right technique, really honing in and focusing on like the pre-run, during and at post stuff.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Like, there's so much that goes into running.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And for someone like me, that is a high chance of getting heat poisoning.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know if there's like an official medical term, but that's what I call it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Um, I really have to be vigilant and like stay hydrated more than I think I am.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: So I've just like learned a lot and I've like, I think it's helping me grow into a better person and like really like learn from my quote unquote mistakes of like what isn't working and like really listening to my body of like you need to do something because what you're doing isn't working and you're just hurting yourself unintentionally, of course.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And for this race, like because I was injured and then like I'm still fresh off PT, like, yes, I feel better, but I hadn't like been able to recover and like retrain for this.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Like, I went into this totally blind.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: So I did walk way more of it than I wanted to, but the goal was to finish.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: It wasn't to get my best time and push myself and then get re-injured and just feel like garbage all over again.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Because I went to this race like not feeling well.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I was super dehydrated and unwell leading up to it and unwell afterwards.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Just like a recipe for disaster.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: I really probably should have sat this one out, but I felt decent the day before and the day of the race.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: So I just went for it.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: I know my limitations.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: If I had to tap out midway, I would have tapped out.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: But I got it done because I was so determined to finish it, get my medals, and just like reach this goal.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: And I don't recommend doing what I what I did.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: I think it's just knowing your limits, listening to your body and like determining like what's important to you.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And what was important to me was like accomplishing this race and finishing it.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And I did that.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So I'm proud of myself and like I've learned a lot and I need to slow down and like really focus on my priorities and like my my physical health.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Because for me, working out and like getting in daily movement is so important.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: So it's like, why wouldn't you want to take care of that?
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I don't really know the answer.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: It's just because, or I do, it's because I went from working out six or seven days, hard workouts for me, to like maybe half of that and like being in pain most of the time.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And it's like, what is that accomplishing?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Like, and but I'm gonna get there.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Like, I just it just took me months to get there, and I wish I had started months sooner, but you know, I'm learning.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm only human.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, I'm not a vampire, and I definitely wouldn't do this route again.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I did not like the SF marathon.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: There wasn't a lot of water stations, like I would have brought more water with me, I guess.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And like it was hard to get around.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: From I just enjoyed LA's way more, um, even though the heat was really rough in LA.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: But I just think SF was way different, and I don't need to do the route again, you know?
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: But I really just would have like slowed down a little bit more.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Like, not during the actual race, it just like between March and now.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Like I would have just like taken a break, but it was so important to me to have something to look forward to.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: And it's funny because I do have another race in three months.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: I just I can't stop.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: But I think this was like a big lesson for me of like knowing my limits, knowing to slow down.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Because, like, if you're injured, it's just gonna delay stuff.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And if you keep re-injuring yourself, it's just not gonna get you what you want.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: So it's really important to listen to your body and know what you have to do to take care of it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I should, I should have known better, but I used to have to go to physical therapy and I really didn't like going.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: And I think that's a big reason why I push it out so much.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I do like my new physical therapy place.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So, like I just, I just needed to like grow up a little bit and like do what I didn't want to do, but had to do because like feeling good is important and not being in pain.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, like you're you need your knees for like everything.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, it would hurt walking.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: So I um there's a lot, there's a lot to learn with this, and it's good.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not giving up, I'm just like slowing down and really encouraging myself to like go at this new pace and remind myself like I will get back to where I was pre-injury and like honing in on like what I need to do to prepare for my workouts and like post-care.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: I think like I'm just so focused on like getting the workout in.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: I'm not actually focused on like taking care of myself, and that's the whole point, right?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: For me, it's to take care of my physical and mental health.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: And I don't know.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's funny admitting like I should have done things differently and like and I'm not perfect.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And I already have stated like I should have maybe done a 5k, 10k, and then a half marathon, and then do the full instead of like working my way backwards.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: But that is just how I live my life.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I guess I go all in on certain things.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: So I think like I've learned a lot if I haven't made that clear.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And for my next race, I'm doing the Nike after dark, which I'm super excited about.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I think I'm gonna thrive because it's in the evening and I'm not a morning person, and it won't be hot, um, or not too hot, hopefully.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And it's I know what to do now, and um that I didn't do for this race.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: I'll be in PT and I can properly train and not just like basically run 13 mile 13.1 or walk run, whatever I had to do to get this cross this finish line, but I can actually train properly because I didn't do that.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: So gosh, I just feel so silly, but it's okay.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: I'm self-aware, right?
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I know what I gotta do and not do next time.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: And like we can only go up, right?
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: So for these upcoming months, I'm really just gonna focus on staying healthy and knowing my limits and working like just taking everything day by day and getting my sleep.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Um, just you know, the basic necessities.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And if I really took anything away from this race, it was that growth changes what success looks like.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's pushing harder, sometimes it's pulling back.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: The hard part is knowing the difference and the timing of both.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: So, whatever you're working towards right now, I hope you give yourself permission to listen to your body, knowing your limits, and to trust yourself.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And to remember that taking care of yourself isn't getting in the way of your goals.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: It's what allows you to keep chasing them.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: So I will leave you with that.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for listening in.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I'll catch you all next week.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: And don't forget to ask yourself, okay, but are you good?
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: And make sure to like them, subscribe.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Bye.
