Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the libido lounge where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido.
- 0:05We believe that fabulous sex is important to health as exercise and good food.
- 0:11Hey, everybody.
- 0:12Welcome back to another episode on the lounge.
- 0:15I'm so excited about the conversation we're gonna have today.
- 0:19I'm bringing on today one of my friends, Jennifer Joy Jimenez, and we're gonna talk
- 0:24about body shame.
- 0:26We're gonna talk about dance.
- 0:27We're gonna talk about techniques you can use to feel more confident in your body, to get
- 0:33into the body sensations, to actually feel pleasure in new and profound ways, which, of
- 0:39course, translates down into better libido, better relationships, better connection with
- 0:45yourself, with your partner, and so much more.
- 0:48So I wanna introduce Jennifer here.
- 0:51So Jennifer is the founder of Transcendence, which is just a powerful movement exercise that
- 0:58we're gonna talk about today that is really designed to do this, to help you get into your
- 1:03body more, to help you feel more confident, and so many more things than I know that I'm gonna
- 1:07let Jennifer tell us about.
- 1:09And then she's also the founder and director of the health and well-being division at the Brave
- 1:15Thinking Institute.
- 1:16So welcome.
- 1:17I'm so excited to be here with you today.
- 1:19Thanks for joining us, Jennifer.
- 1:21It is my absolute pleasure, and I'm super grateful to have to be here today.
- 1:26Yeah.
- 1:27Well, let's open with this concept of, like, what is Transcendence?
- 1:31How were you inspired to really create this?
- 1:34And what are we really doing from a standpoint with this type of visionary movement that is
- 1:41bringing us into our body, that is helping us become more full in our body and more alive?
- 1:46Can you kinda just set the stage with, like, what are we talking about exactly with
- 1:50Transcendence?
- 1:51Yes.
- 1:51Thank you for asking.
- 1:53So the one of the easiest ways I have found to describe Transcendence is it's like taking the
- 1:58mindfulness of yoga off the mat and infusing in joyful free form movement.
- 2:06So what do we mean by free form?
- 2:08Most people when they think of the word dance, they think of Zumba, ballroom, jazz, ballet, a
- 2:14very technical dance.
- 2:16Now that is my background.
- 2:17I came from the professional dance background world.
- 2:20But conscious dance or freeform dance is really about unlocking your inner dancer within.
- 2:28We're all born dancers.
- 2:30Have you ever seen a baby that when music comes on, they can't help but shake their little
- 2:35tush?
- 2:35Like, literally rhythm and movement and being in our bodies and being free in our bodies.
- 2:40If you look at three year olds, four year olds, five year olds, as long as they've lived a
- 2:44pretty normal, you know, upbringing without a huge amount of trauma, they're in their bodies.
- 2:50They're moving their bodies freely, and then somewhere along the way, we lose touch with
- 2:56really living in that free, connected, embodied state.
- 3:01And so one of my passions controlling our bodies.
- 3:09Right?
- 3:09That statistically it said that ninety percent of women hate their bodies, that one in three
- 3:15women have been abused
- 3:16in some way.
- 3:16So it is
- 3:16no surprise that we leave, in some way.
- 3:18So it is no surprise that we leave our bodies.
- 3:21It hasn't felt safe.
- 3:23It hasn't felt pleasurable or good to be in the body.
- 3:27And conscious dance and specifically transcendence is a set of dance opportunities,
- 3:33right, really where we come into the breath and we allow the inner dancer within us.
- 3:39I like to say that we all have an inner physician within.
- 3:42We all have an inner wise being, and yet we don't give ourselves a whole lot of time to
- 3:47unlock that part of us that is available to heal us, to free us, to feel that sense of
- 3:53liberated freedom.
- 3:54That's probably one of the first things I have clients say in their very first class.
- 3:59I haven't danced like this since I was a child.
- 4:02I don't think I've ever felt this liberated or free.
- 4:05It didn't matter that I was told I have two left feet.
- 4:08You know, you don't have to have rhythm.
- 4:10You're not following anyone else's dance steps or moves, so there's no complication in it.
- 4:15It really is just about feeling amazing and freeing our bodies.
- 4:20One of the things you get me thinking about as you're describing this is, like, in sexuality
- 4:25and in sexual relations, I see so many times where partners kinda get locked into, like,
- 4:32this one movement, right, where it's like, oh, well, it looks this way.
- 4:37We do step a.
- 4:37We do step b.
- 4:38We do step c.
- 4:39Like, we reach the grand finale, and it's over.
- 4:42And so, you know, when you're talking about an infant and that movement of that's almost like
- 4:48free form.
- 4:49Right?
- 4:49Infants aren't thinking.
- 4:50They're just they're just moving.
- 4:52So I'm curious.
- 4:53Like, do you feel like with something like Transcendence, like, if that is really kinda,
- 4:58like, almost unlocking more of the possibilities that is kinda break can break us
- 5:03out of, say, moving, not only in life, but also in our intimate relationships in a a different
- 5:09way that kinda gets us unlocked from those patterns.
- 5:13Absolutely.
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:15Absolutely.
- 5:16I have a couple of a couple quick stories to share of of people who've I mean, I've worked
- 5:20with, of course, thousands of people from all over the world that tell me they not only feel
- 5:25more confident in their body in their everyday interactions, from the boardroom being able to
- 5:30stand up and really be in their full confident self, but, of course, to the bedroom where they
- 5:35get unlocked and freed from those rote, you know, very stagnant, very stiff, very tight
- 5:41kind of movement patterns that when you live in the fullness of your being, it unlocks freedom,
- 5:47sensuality, connection in ways that you wouldn't even begin to describe.
- 5:53I would say I'm having I've been married twenty nine years.
- 5:57I've had one sexual partner, which is really uncommon.
- 6:00I met my husband when I was 16, though, so that tells you a few things.
- 6:04But it doesn't matter.
- 6:05I've seen myself grow over all of these years from a 16 year old, very curious, and very, you
- 6:12know, sensual woman, but also as a professional dancer.
- 6:15I got into very controlling ways and abusive ways with my body as a young woman, starvation
- 6:22and control and deprivation and over exercising, that whole paradigm, which is
- 6:27really normal in the professional dance world, to then getting pregnant with my daughter and
- 6:32having a fifty hour labor even though I trained for it like I was gonna climb Kilimanjaro, and
- 6:39I'm in the best shape of my life.
- 6:41And I'm visualizing my beautiful, perfect, all natural labor in my mind every night and doing
- 6:46kegels and the whole thing as you, you know, you can understand where that's going.
- 6:50Right?
- 6:51So that birth was actually my doorway, though, to this work because after all that work and
- 6:57all that dedication to feel like I was so disconnected during that birth process.
- 7:04I wasn't taught to let my body lead me.
- 7:09Think about that for a moment.
- 7:10In birth, in love making, in sensuality, it's not about telling the body what to do.
- 7:17Right?
- 7:18It's really about actually letting the natural wisdom that is the body teach you, show you,
- 7:26guide you.
- 7:27And so after that fifty hour labor and birth, I became a real sponge and a hungry student to
- 7:34find everything I could in my around me, every book I could find, every mentor, and that's
- 7:40really where I found conscious dance.
- 7:42And the first whole process was me healing my own disconnect from my body, coming home to my
- 7:48body, even healing the trauma the birth was for me.
- 7:52I healed through conscious dance, and that was the early years of creating Transcendence,
- 7:59really pulling from some of the most famous and well known world renowned, you know, mentors of
- 8:07this modality.
- 8:08But I'm also I was raised by a thought leader mother who taught me from a very early age that
- 8:14thoughts become things, that we're cocreators of our lives, that this is a we're all swimming
- 8:19in this universal spiritual energy.
- 8:22We're spiritual beings having a human experience, but she was also very much a a
- 8:27thought leader.
- 8:28You know, that gen she's 75.
- 8:30Right?
- 8:30So that generation, the Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra, you know, generation where it's very
- 8:35kind of thought driven, and I'm wired differently.
- 8:38I'm wired from an embodied perspective.
- 8:41I wanna feel it and move it to know it.
- 8:45I'm a kinesthetic learner.
- 8:47So I was able to take all that I was learning and understanding in all of those teachings as
- 8:52now an adult woman, right, and how it didn't quite work just by thinking it into reality
- 8:59with my birth, right, manifesting that perfect birth.
- 9:01I was like, okay.
- 9:02Something was off there.
- 9:04And I began to marry this mind, body, spirit connection, bringing in conscious dance, but
- 9:11universal spiritual principles and breathing and movement patterns that just completely open
- 9:19me up to this whole other experience of my own body first and foremost.
- 9:24I started having some of the best sex I've ever had in my life, and I wouldn't even call it
- 9:29sex.
- 9:29I would call it oneness and connection and dancing in the bedroom and just because I I was
- 9:36in my body, like, really in my body.
- 9:40Then when I had my second two babies, my son my two sons, I had my son Joel in two hours, start
- 9:47to finish, my son Joaquin in ninety minutes.
- 9:49And there were moments I know it sounds crazy, but moments during those births where it was
- 9:55pleasurable.
- 9:56I mean, it was too.
- 9:58Right?
- 9:58But it there was this this harmony and this connection where I was dancing with the baby
- 10:04and allowing my cervix to open, and that led to understanding all different connection points
- 10:11with my body.
- 10:11And that was really taking that, my own self first, right, as my own laboratory, and then
- 10:17beginning to roll it out little by little with clients.
- 10:20Now that's it's been my daughter's 24.
- 10:22She'll be 25 in November.
- 10:23So, you know, we're talking over twenty years in this laboratory of life to codify this in a
- 10:30way that people that aren't natural dancers or movers or people that are, like, in the best
- 10:35shape of their lives, people that are older, people that are younger can come into an
- 10:39experience in over the course of a few minutes, really, honestly, with some basic awarenesses
- 10:45that this is safe.
- 10:47This is a nonjudgment zone.
- 10:49You're not gonna be ridiculed or judged here because that's really the first thing people
- 10:52get defensive.
- 10:53Oh, I've been told I can't dance, or, oh, I need to do it in it.
- 10:56There's a right way.
- 10:57There's a wrong way.
- 10:58I'm gonna get judged.
- 10:59That's our human kind of adult paradigm, and I think that shows up in the bedroom too.
- 11:04I'm gonna do it wrong.
- 11:06You know?
- 11:06Like, oh, am I doing it right?
- 11:08Just all of that self consciousness.
- 11:10And what I found is when you have these types of modalities that teach you there is no wrong
- 11:17way.
- 11:18And, actually, when you live in your body, you can sense the other person and what's going on
- 11:24with them energetically without words in ways that you've heightened and opened up this sixth
- 11:29sense.
- 11:30And so two quick stories for about clients.
- 11:33I mean, I have, like, so many stories, like, hundreds and hundreds of stories, but two that
- 11:37came to my mind.
- 11:38One is a woman, and she hadn't had sex for over a decade.
- 11:43She came into my transformational coaching and retreats and classes and all kinds of things
- 11:47that I do.
- 11:48And transcendence is really this, like, key piece that I bring into that work to help women
- 11:53come into their bodies.
- 11:54So the big thing she wanted because she ate really well.
- 11:56She was basically pretty healthy, but she wanted to reignite things in the bedroom.
- 12:03And what we found very quickly was she was running a lot of unconscious masculine energy.
- 12:08And when you're running as and this is really common.
- 12:10I'm sure you see it all the time in your work.
- 12:12Right?
- 12:13And it's really this default mode a lot of women have learned to operate in this very, you
- 12:19know, western world that we're in, and it's really not their fault.
- 12:23They just haven't learned to soften and how to run Go energy and then how to soften into
- 12:28receiving energy.
- 12:29There's this opportunity for that.
- 12:31So taught her a few tools within the first less than three months of the program.
- 12:37I wanna say it was probably within the first sixty days.
- 12:40She's in and her thing was she wanted to be whisked way into the bedroom.
- 12:44Like, she didn't wanna initiate.
- 12:46He hadn't initiated in, like, a decade, and I'm thinking, oh my god.
- 12:50Yeah.
- 12:50I can't I can't even imagine.
- 12:52You know?
- 12:52Like, I just yeah.
- 12:54I just my my heart just felt so much for her and wanting her to have this experience, but
- 13:02allow it, like, to help her blossom and soften into this feminine energy that is magnetic.
- 13:10It's like the flower that attracts the bee.
- 13:12The flower can't be running around telling chasing after the bees.
- 13:16The flower just blossoms, and the bees come.
- 13:19Right?
- 13:19So, anyhow, she I remember one of the coaching calls where she came.
- 13:23She was like, Jennifer.
- 13:24You're never gonna believe it.
- 13:26He comes home from work.
- 13:27He grabs me in his arms.
- 13:29He whisks me off into the bedroom, and, you know, they had this really amazing intimate
- 13:34experience.
- 13:35Now she also needed some support because it'd been a long time.
- 13:38You know?
- 13:39So she needed some tools and some support around really making it as pleasurable as as it
- 13:44can be after at her age and after so many years, which we solved that as well just to be
- 13:49real.
- 13:50You know what I mean?
- 13:51But the but the point of her attracting him in that way came from an embodied experience.
- 14:00You know?
- 14:01And then Benjamin, my my other client who basically talks about like, he was just, like,
- 14:08really introverted, so clumsy that he would bump into things.
- 14:13You know, those people that just are like they they don't even know where they are in space.
- 14:17And think about how that might translate into the bedroom.
- 14:20Like, you're not it's just really hard to get into a rhythm.
- 14:24You know?
- 14:25And so two left feet bumping into things, like, super self conscious and told his whole life he
- 14:33can't dance.
- 14:33But yet, I think inside of all of us, there's this, like, five year old that just doesn't
- 14:39give a crap.
- 14:40You know what I mean?
- 14:41Like, that just we're at the the the summer concert, and we're just having fun and running
- 14:47around and twirling around and hopping and skipping and that part of us that just wants to
- 14:52be allowed to just be as we are.
- 14:55So he comes into the work, starts doing these, you know, transcendence practices and has
- 15:00completely blossomed.
- 15:01Totally super, you know, confident, can be on stage in front of a hundred people at an event
- 15:08just moving and dancing, and it's translated into his work in the world.
- 15:13He's increased his income.
- 15:14Like, so much can open up for people when they really come home to their bodies.
- 15:19So a few stories.
- 15:20Yeah.
- 15:20Thanks.
- 15:21I one of the things that I really wanna emphasize and and what you've said here is that
- 15:26concept, right, of guiding and of, like, let the body guide you.
- 15:31Because I do think that it's so common, right, that people get into this almost as, like, duty
- 15:36sex type of thing where it's like, oh, I'm just going to do this thing, and it's it's almost
- 15:42mechanical.
- 15:43Right?
- 15:44And oftentimes, I, like, I taught a class last week on having the right kind of sex.
- 15:49So people are like, well, what is that kind?
- 15:51Well, it's the kind that actually is exactly what you're saying.
- 15:54It's the kind that is body led, that is allowing your body to actually feel into this
- 16:01is what I like.
- 16:02These are the way my body responds.
- 16:05This is how my body is led.
- 16:07And and another thing I like about your work and and what I've experienced experience with
- 16:12it when we've been at conferences together and you've led, you know, activities this way is
- 16:17this this concept that I've seen with all the dance I've done over the years of this sense of
- 16:24allowing various body parts to almost lead where it's like, oh, what is it like?
- 16:29And we can take that into the bedroom.
- 16:31Right?
- 16:31Like so, like, what is it like?
- 16:32Because some of your work sometimes, I I believe you do things like, okay.
- 16:35Well, now lead from this part of your body.
- 16:37And so even in the bedroom, like, what is it like if I lead from my heart?
- 16:41What is it like if I lead from my yoni?
- 16:44What is it like if I lead from my bosom?
- 16:46Right?
- 16:46So you can say more about almost, like, tuning in to those different body parts like that.
- 16:52Mhmm.
- 16:53Yeah.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:54Yeah.
- 16:55I love that.
- 16:56Well, what came to my mind was actually my own process of getting to know my pleasure centers,
- 17:06which aren't only just my, you know what I mean, my sacred center or my yoni or my
- 17:12breasts, but, like, the inside of my elbow.
- 17:16You know what I mean?
- 17:17Or the inner part of my wrist to be kissed there.
- 17:20And actually, commune first of all, knowing that at all is my responsibility, and I'm sure
- 17:27you teach this, Diane.
- 17:28You know, it's not it's not anybody else's job to know what it feels like to be in my body,
- 17:34what I like to feel, where I wanna be touched, and when I wanna be touched there is the other
- 17:41thing.
- 17:41So as I've so this conscious dance practice, one of the the stages there's 10 stages in
- 17:47transcendence.
- 17:48One of the stages to help people come home to their body is stage four, which is the dance of
- 17:54self, and you do that exact thing through a very kind of sensual, you know, type of a song
- 18:00usually we're we're working with.
- 18:02And we literally will just start to kind of meander through the space, walk through the
- 18:06room, and feel the whole space.
- 18:07There is no front to class.
- 18:09There's no mirrors in a conscious dance class, which is great because you're not worried about
- 18:13how you look.
- 18:14You know, usually over time, you get better at that.
- 18:16But you just start moving your head and moving your shoulders, and literally you move towards
- 18:23pleasure, which is so counterintuitive for so many people.
- 18:27So much of our, at least, Western fitness world is this no pain, no gain.
- 18:32It you've gotta work really hard to see the results, and your body has to look a certain
- 18:36way to be pleasurable and beautiful and good enough, thin enough, curvy enough, whatever the
- 18:41enoughness is.
- 18:42So you just let all of that judgment out, and you just love moving your body, and your body
- 18:49loves to move.
- 18:50And as you open up to that movement, it does feel good.
- 18:53And you start to feel pleasure in your body, and you go, oh, this is what unlocks the sense
- 18:59of aliveness and pleasure.
- 19:01And I would say that's probably the most important shift for me in moving from a dutiful
- 19:06feeling of, like I mean, because my husband's from Mexico.
- 19:09He's a Latin literally, like, a Latin lover.
- 19:12Sexes and sensuality and connection and intimacy is one of the most important love
- 19:17languages for him, and he has no problem going straight in, you know, like, right to the
- 19:24central parts.
- 19:25You know?
- 19:25Doctor I love doctor Christian Northrop's books, women's bodies, women's wisdom, and
- 19:30secret pleasures of menopause.
- 19:31These are really great books because they just really open us up to there's so much more to
- 19:36look forward to even in our postmenopausal years as women, and I'm right in that
- 19:41transition as a 49 year old woman.
- 19:44You know?
- 19:44And one of the things that I learned even through reading her book is our energies are
- 19:50moving outward.
- 19:52Right?
- 19:52And men's energies are moving inward, so they just wanna go straight in.
- 19:56So I can't tell you how many times I've had to remind him and and be patient with it.
- 20:01Let it be okay that he wants to go straight for those parts.
- 20:05You know?
- 20:06And I'm like, hold on.
- 20:07Hold on.
- 20:08Kiss me here.
- 20:10Kiss me right.
- 20:11You remember, honey?
- 20:12It's like I'm like, we've been married twenty nine years.
- 20:14You should know this, but this is okay.
- 20:15I I don't mind.
- 20:16You just right here.
- 20:17It's right there.
- 20:18You know?
- 20:19Or right here and, like, help support.
- 20:22It's not anybody else's responsibility.
- 20:25It's my responsibility to live a turned on life so that I am living in this pleasurable living
- 20:33place.
- 20:34From that place, I can come and bring pleasure and sensuality.
- 20:40One of my favorite quotes is that the turned on western woman really will save the world.
- 20:45Right?
- 20:45But that's a really important piece, isn't it?
- 20:49You know, Diane, the turned on woman and that we're responsible to live this turned on life.
- 20:54It really is.
- 20:56And I think so many times because of, you know, patriarchy versus matriarchy and just societal
- 21:02influences over the past many centuries, really.
- 21:06It has been this thing around like, oh, this pleasure, this feeling, this asking for what we
- 21:10want is either, like, bad, and they should just know.
- 21:13And I think finally, we're at this phase where, like, getting away from just, like even, like,
- 21:18just things like like you said, like, getting away from the thinking body into the feeling
- 21:21body and really making it safe and culturally acceptable and not only culturally acceptable,
- 21:26but culturally encouraged to say, hey.
- 21:29Actually, yeah, we do have to to voice our pleasure.
- 21:32We do have to really let our partner know.
- 21:35And after twenty nine years, still remind them because it's not that anybody's doing things
- 21:40wrong.
- 21:40It's that literally our brains work differently, and that's all it is.
- 21:43There's no other meaning behind that.
- 21:45And so we do have to take that personal pleasure, that personal responsibility.
- 21:50And part of that is learning our body and learning our feeling and learning all of those
- 21:55things, which is, you know, one of the reasons why I wanted to bring you on because, like I
- 21:59said, my own personal experience has been that the sensual dance types of movements and
- 22:05courses and classes have been the one of the most fundamental things for me for getting in
- 22:10my own body and being having that confidence.
- 22:13Right?
- 22:13We talked about that offline around, like, the confidence that these classes and these courses
- 22:18give us around these movement classes to have the confidence to say those hard things.
- 22:23So I know we're, we're about to wrap up here, and I do wanna make sure that everybody knows
- 22:28that we do have an amazing gift that you're giving away, which is a free class.
- 22:34So you're you're offering the audience a way to try this and experience this and get in their
- 22:40body and waking up their sensuality, but waking up their confidence and all the other amazing
- 22:46things that you mentioned in your stories that come with this.
- 22:48So thank you so much for that.
- 22:51And is there and we'll have all the information on how to get ahold of Jennifer and work with
- 22:56her in the show notes, you guys.
- 22:58But I wanna ask a final question, which is, like, is there anything else you wanna leave
- 23:02our audience with?
- 23:03Is there anything that you just feel is so important that they're remembering in the
- 23:08context of movement, of dance, of getting inside of their body, of you know, really
- 23:13having that confidence to take charge of their own pleasure.
- 23:17Anything to live leave us with today?
- 23:19Say probably the biggest message is it doesn't have to take a long time.
- 23:25That was probably one of my biggest learning coming from the professional dance world.
- 23:28I used to dance eight hours a day, and I had this paradigm that I had to do it all in a
- 23:34certain way in a huge amount of my day.
- 23:36And as I became a mother and a entrepreneur and all the things that I do, truly, and I know
- 23:43this is probably you know, we hear this over and over and over again as sitting as the new
- 23:48the new smoking because our lymph system literally can't move the toxins out of our body
- 23:53unless our muscles are moving.
- 23:55Right?
- 23:55So literally standing up from our desk, putting on a song that just ignites joy.
- 24:00And we all have that song where we're driving in the car, and it comes on, and you just can't
- 24:06help it.
- 24:06You're singing in the car.
- 24:07Your toes start tapping.
- 24:09So it's that kind of a song that just ignites those happy hormones, and there's so much
- 24:15science.
- 24:15We haven't even gotten into the health benefits of dance.
- 24:19And we talked all about the sensuality, but, I mean, it increases your circulation.
- 24:23It increases your mental acuity.
- 24:26It literally gives you an emotional boost.
- 24:29It's our best antidepressant out there.
- 24:32It also helps our muscles and our bones.
- 24:34I mean, I could go on and on and on.
- 24:36So just a few minutes of dance.
- 24:38Everybody really is your best friend and, a daily dance of of daily dose of dance can
- 24:45really keep the doctor away as well.
- 24:48So, my encouragement is just dance.
- 24:50Just
- 24:51dance.
- 24:51I love it, and I love that orientation too.
- 24:54It doesn't have to take a lot of time because I think so often when it's like a new habit, it's
- 24:58like, okay.
- 24:59I'm gonna commit to an hour a day, and that lasts for about three days, and then we realize
- 25:03we don't have time.
- 25:04So it doesn't take a lot of time.
- 25:06And and I have found in my own life, like, I dance all my emotions, and that's one of the
- 25:11things I've got at essential dance practice where it's like, if I'm angry, if I'm sad, if I
- 25:15have fear, if I have anxiety, if I'm happy, all the different emotions, you know, the light
- 25:19ones, the dark ones, the hard ones, the easy ones, bring it to dance.
- 25:23And it's amazing.
- 25:24Like, I have my special songs where it's like, oh, I'm feeling angry, and I gotta get it out.
- 25:29And the songs I go to.
- 25:30And all those things are just it's just you're right.
- 25:33There's so many health benefits.
- 25:35And I wanna remind all of our listeners that this year in 2024, we're doing these short, you
