- 0:01Oh God. Oh my God. imagine that rachel's helmet
- 0:23would fit your ginormous like no it does not
- 0:27it does not go all the way down on my head no
- 0:29very much at the very top point of his head but
- 0:32it's also not big enough for me to put the headphones
- 0:35on underneath yeah it was the bit didn't work
- 0:39well enough we were gonna have you yell real
- 0:40loud oh hey benjamin franklin gates hello i'm
- 0:44so glad we've done this great visual comedy work
- 0:49on our podcast. Our audience understands. It's
- 0:53been four years and we still don't understand
- 0:55how this medium works. I think we're crushing
- 0:59it. We could probably start doing video episodes
- 1:01because I just barely edit anymore. Throw it
- 1:05up as it is. Harder to run with that, but I can
- 1:08figure it out. Has it gotten better or because
- 1:10you've stopped caring? It can be a little bit
- 1:14of both. I would say mostly I care less. Season
- 1:19three is different though. Like when we were
- 1:21having to do the head to head stuff, it mattered
- 1:23more structure, all that kind of thing. There
- 1:25was a little, a little more that we had to pay
- 1:26attention to. This is a little more free form.
- 1:29This is like jazz. I love myself some jazz. That's
- 1:36fantastic. So how did you forget that you're
- 1:39running a race tomorrow? It's not that I forgot.
- 1:42It's a Cinco de Mayo fun run. And tomorrow is
- 1:45Tres de Mayo. All right. All right. I'll give
- 1:49it to you. Cinco de Mayo. That's actually a fair
- 1:54comeback. I'll give them that one. This is what
- 1:56I get for, you know, trying to speak in the devil's
- 1:59tongue. Oh, Diablo's tongue. Yeah, right. I spent
- 2:04all week on that joke. It shows. Didn't watch
- 2:09the movie. Yeah, didn't watch the movie. Just
- 2:11like Nick. Speaking of things I've wasted my
- 2:15time on, welcome back to Cage Magical and a roundabout
- 2:17way of meeting Nicolas Cage. I'm Sean, here with
- 2:21my co -host. I'm Sean. Here with my co -host.
- 2:27I'm Sean. I'm Sean. I'm Seanicus. Yes, we are
- 2:32all Sean. Now, everybody say a slur. I'm Sean
- 2:38and I approve this message. I'm not doing much
- 2:41with it. And, you know, I don't know. At this
- 2:45point, I actually have decent credit, so don't
- 2:47don't fuck with it. Yeah, we don't want to mess
- 2:48with your IMDB either. Of course. Yeah, that's
- 2:51pretty important to have that. Yeah, your star
- 2:53power is on the rise again. So, Bill. I genuinely
- 2:57cannot remember. Have you ever been on the podcast
- 2:59before? I have not been on the podcast before.
- 3:02I was just talking to Peter. How many nervous
- 3:03poops did you have? About three, I believe. So
- 3:07it was good. And then took Jarvis on a walk and
- 3:09he had two. So we are all empty. It's good. We're
- 3:12going to go. Perfect timing. I love that. Yep.
- 3:15We're going to have a real like a race to get
- 3:17you three appearances on the podcast before everybody
- 3:20gets three. I was going to say I was listening
- 3:22to last week's show this morning and I was like,
- 3:25oh, no, we got number one today, but I have to
- 3:28get two more. Yeah, yeah, it's going to be tight.
- 3:31I feel like John has I feel like John's had more
- 3:34than three. John or Oric have had the most, I
- 3:38think. I think it's been John because I think
- 3:41John's also was on. He's done like three actual
- 3:44episodes and he was on long legs as well. Oh,
- 3:47that's right. Yeah. Good old long legs. Yeah.
- 3:50I haven't missed an episode and it's definitely
- 3:52those two that I've, I've heard the most often
- 3:54as guest stars. Yeah. Although Hornback starting
- 3:56to stick out too. Yeah. Speaking of long legs,
- 4:00spiders. I'll give it to you. That was almost
- 4:04one of the better ones I've heard from you. Well
- 4:07done. Long legs. Perfect. Speaking of daddies,
- 4:14this movie is for all the daddies. We're also
- 4:17talking about Into the Spider -Verse. Yes. We've
- 4:20got Chris Pine, Fat Spider -Man. Jake Johnson.
- 4:25Jake Johnson. Love him. He's great. And Nick
- 4:28Cage. And crazy, coked -out Uncle Spider -Man,
- 4:32John Mulaney. All the daddy spiders. Ooh, can
- 4:38I get my Sean in 60 seconds out of the way? Yes.
- 4:40Oh, hey. All right. it's great this movie's still
- 4:44awesome go watch it do you want to say anything
- 4:48else with your extra time six seconds no i fucking
- 4:51i tried to write something for this one i'm like
- 4:52no this is a good movie i can't i'm not gonna
- 4:54make this funny so just fucking go watch it it's
- 4:57still amazing I paid for a minute, Sean, in 60
- 4:59seconds. I only got six seconds. Come on now.
- 5:01What are you going to give me with that last
- 5:0350? You got to say it 10 times now. Perfect.
- 5:10Excellent. Oh, this is good. Peter hasn't had
- 5:15a reason to cut content in a while. Just keep
- 5:17it up. Keep it up. Here we go. Editing. Nailing
- 5:20it. Mute entire track. I only have one critique
- 5:24about this movie, and that's the fact that it
- 5:26sounds like everyone recorded their dialogue
- 5:27underwater. The sound mixing on this movie, not
- 5:30great. Everything else, perfect. Could that have
- 5:33been maybe an artistic choice? They're all wearing
- 5:37masks. Yeah, they're wearing masks, plus the
- 5:39art is so beautiful in this. maybe it's genuinely
- 5:43sounds like it at times where they're just standing
- 5:45way too far away from the mics but everyone like
- 5:46i've watched this movie like seven times and
- 5:49this is the first time i watched it with like
- 5:50subtitles and i'm like i never knew they were
- 5:53saying half that shit i need this i never i'm
- 5:5741 years old i have to have this i just always
- 5:59have them on too yeah so i guess i never really
- 6:01have paid that much attention to it yeah i never
- 6:04caught me as uh being bad everyone's like everyone
- 6:11sounds either like extra mumbly or just like
- 6:13slightly like removed from like where i feel
- 6:17like their voice should be at i don't know it's
- 6:18just got a weird sound mix i i think at this
- 6:21point we need to stop holding people to our quality
- 6:25of audio this audio honey right yeah we we're
- 6:29really laying it on thick we're good we nailed
- 6:32it boom we're professionals that's true but other
- 6:35than that movie is fucking spectacular um it
- 6:38is it's a really good movie you're wrong and
- 6:41yeah rachel's not like super huge on animation
- 6:44and she was sort of watching while doing some
- 6:46work next to me and then got sucked in by it
- 6:48for sure yeah the animation style of this is
- 6:50just so incredible it's so cool it's it's something
- 6:54else that's the only like gripe that i i've read
- 6:57about this is that the artists got like overworked
- 7:00which that's no shit like of course they did
- 7:03yeah but you know it it shows it's really good
- 7:07it's very very cool I think that might be the
- 7:10other critique, then, is it's going to take way
- 7:11too long to get part three out because they're
- 7:14so... I heard it got delayed a couple times because,
- 7:18well, and now with everybody getting fired over
- 7:20in Marvel and stuff these days, it's like...
- 7:22Well, this is still Sony. This is still Sony,
- 7:24so it will be a little different. Okay, good.
- 7:26Hey, you're giving me hope. That's good, because
- 7:28they left us hanging after the second one. But
- 7:31that's not the movie we're talking about. There
- 7:32was an interview with Lord and Miller where they
- 7:34talked about the third film and why it's taken
- 7:36so long. And what they said was, they knew the
- 7:40second movie they had too much story for one
- 7:42film so like we'll make it two films then they
- 7:44finished the second film went into production
- 7:46for the third and they're like oh we have a third
- 7:49act we don't have a full movie so they pretty
- 7:52much needed to like extend out the ending of
- 7:55the second movie to be a full movie so they needed
- 7:57to find like a story within it to tell a full
- 8:01arc Well, give us the story of this one. OK,
- 8:04we will talk about the first one, not the second
- 8:06one, which embarrassingly enough, I had to ask
- 8:08Peter, which one is it for sure? He's like the
- 8:09one Nicolas Cage is actually in. He'll be in
- 8:13the third one. Yeah, that's true. But yeah, story
- 8:15opens. I won't have the right. earth name but
- 8:20it opens with a spider -man and that's the chris
- 8:22pine spider -man that sean brought up and uh
- 8:24the one and only the one and only spider -man
- 8:27and talking about how great it is to be spider
- 8:30-man kind of goes through some of the history
- 8:32of the spider -man what we've seen in the past
- 8:34which was was kind of a fun little nod to some
- 8:36of the history he has a so -so popsicle Yeah.
- 8:39Oh, yeah. Golly. I was like, oh, I actually would
- 8:41try that Popsicle, though. And a Christmas album.
- 8:43Good for him. Yeah. So we start off with that
- 8:46world. Spider -Man. Spider -Man. And then it
- 8:49shows us Miles Morales starting another week
- 8:53or so at this school that he does not want to
- 8:55go to. But his dad drops him off. They go to
- 8:59school. And then he hates. I've got to just.
- 9:04I like this cop. I thought about, I was, I was,
- 9:07I finished my run and yeah, I wasn't sure when
- 9:10to bring this up. And I don't know if you'd call
- 9:12miles a kid, but this is one of the few times
- 9:14in the history of this podcast. Good cop. Good
- 9:18kid. Yeah. It might be the old time. It was honestly
- 9:20racking my brains to think. Cause there've been
- 9:22times there've been like, Oh, there's a sneaky
- 9:23good kid or, Oh wow. This cop actually did the
- 9:25right thing. No, no good cop. Good kid. Cause
- 9:27even when he was kind of mad at Spider -Man.
- 9:29He was not like, oh, good. He's well, spoiler
- 9:32alert. He's dead. Yes. He was like. So like and
- 9:35then with the new Spider -Man, he was going to
- 9:36work with him, too. He didn't love it, but he
- 9:38was actually like willing to be like not bend
- 9:42his morals, but like, OK, I'm not too good for
- 9:45you. I will work with you. So that was really
- 9:46nice to see that they've created a good cop.
- 9:48Yeah. So that was nice. Well, Spider -Man did
- 9:51say, I love you. That's true. We can definitely
- 9:54see why this cop hasn't made detective yet. Cause
- 9:57he's not good at like figuring shit out. That,
- 10:02that, that too as well. So then Miles goes to
- 10:07blow off steam with his uncle, Aaron, and does
- 10:11some graffiti art. Who's very good at, and what
- 10:14happens? The usual Spider -Man thing gets bit
- 10:16by a radioactive spider. Not sure why it had
- 10:19number 42 on it, but. maybe one of y 'all know
- 10:21jackie robinson oh perfect thank you that makes
- 10:23sense miles morales is uh oftentimes hit up with
- 10:27that number 42 so you see it a couple times in
- 10:29the movie like when he when miles falls yes there's
- 10:32the 42 next to him it's all a nod to jackie robinson
- 10:34that's cool i didn't know that yeah i didn't
- 10:36i i honestly thought you're pulling my leg at
- 10:38first uh no that is yeah so he gets bit obviously
- 10:42the spider -man stuff starts to happen sports
- 10:45i love that first thing though when he gets bit
- 10:48and then it's just sort of like yeah and that's
- 10:51a quick slap spider dead goodbye you did your
- 10:54job since we're just going into a little bit
- 10:56of the history of uh miles morales uh comes from
- 10:59the ultimate comics universe um brian michael
- 11:02bendis had written the entirety of uh ultimate
- 11:04comics spider -man and when he was kind of figuring
- 11:07out what to do with the character and i think
- 11:09at this point they knew they were gonna kill
- 11:11peter parker um but he has adopted uh daughters
- 11:15who are black and he was talking to them and
- 11:17they were like how come we don't have a spider
- 11:18-man he's like you're right how come you don't
- 11:20have a spider -man and that's where he came up
- 11:21with the idea of doing miles oh that's awesome
- 11:24i love that uh okay so miles has been bitten
- 11:27he goes to school the next day he's got all this
- 11:30like oh what's wrong with me powers and that's
- 11:32where we're too small the high waters Did I hit
- 11:37puberty? Why did I say that out loud? Why am
- 11:41I so sweaty? Yes, that's what I ask myself every
- 11:44day. I don't think I'm going through puberty
- 11:46anymore. Yeah, I didn't know internal monologue
- 11:48was a Spider -Man power, but apparently that's
- 11:51part of the game. Another fun thing about that
- 11:54is the comic book thing that they lean into with
- 11:56the little things popping up like they would
- 11:58in a comic book. I was like, okay, that's a cool
- 12:00little artistic thing that y 'all did there.
- 12:02Yeah. The style of this is very good. Yeah. More
- 12:05of this. please. That's where we meet. Gwanda.
- 12:10Gwanda. Gwanda. Gwanda. Your name's Gwanda? She's
- 12:15South African. Couldn't help but think of my...
- 12:18But I grew up here. A little nod to the Avengers
- 12:212, which I was like, okay, that's kind of fun.
- 12:23But anyway, we meet Gwanda and we find out that
- 12:26he can't control the stickiness of his hands.
- 12:29Me too, dude. Halfway out. I knew that that one
- 12:33wasn't... That was going to get hit by something.
- 12:37And so we meet her and he's still freaking out
- 12:41then. Oh my gosh. Where do we go from like, all
- 12:44right, help, help pick me up here. So, I mean,
- 12:45just like, there's a fun scene in that is, you
- 12:48know, he, he goes in the security cop guy is
- 12:51like, Hey, where'd you go? Morales. He's like,
- 12:53Oh, play dumb. who's morales and then he ends
- 12:59up in his office you know he sneaks out the window
- 13:02walks on the wall when he gets back to his apartment
- 13:12he's trying to figure out what happens he finds
- 13:14a spider -man an issue of spider -man that has
- 13:16the origins of spider -man which just bugs me
- 13:20i'm like so spider -man's told his story and
- 13:23I'm assuming within the comics has a secret entity
- 13:25that isn't Peter Parker, but it's Peter Parker's
- 13:28origin story. Hmm. I've never liked that. I found
- 13:30a plot hole. Right. Yeah. That's actually a good
- 13:34point. It's silly and it's always bugged me.
- 13:37Yeah. I'm taking too long to get us through here.
- 13:41So now he wants to go see his uncle Aaron. That's
- 13:43part of the show. Sean cheaped out on Sean in
- 13:4660 seconds. There's the other 50 seconds. You
- 13:50got 55 seconds. All right. So now he's at least
- 13:54gotten himself unstuck from everything. And he's
- 13:57like, who do I trust? Uncle Aaron. I'll go see
- 13:59him again. Ghost finds the spider. He's like,
- 14:01oh, okay. Still there. Still dead. And that's
- 14:04where we first get, well, reintroduced to Peter
- 14:06Parker as he is fighting something not far from
- 14:11where Uncle Aaron lives. What do you think of
- 14:13the Green Goblin creature? Thank you. I'm confused
- 14:16by that. Is that a comic thing? That's the Green
- 14:19Goblin from the Ultimate Universe. Oh, he's that
- 14:22big? Yeah. Oh, he's a big boy. I did the IMDb
- 14:26search for this one, and I already knew the voice
- 14:29cast for this was great. I didn't realize that
- 14:31was Jorma from Lonely Island. Yeah. Yeah, that's
- 14:34really cool. Nice. A little Andy Samberg love
- 14:36right there. But yeah, what, his three lines
- 14:38he had, and three of them or two of them are
- 14:40growls. Like, I thought that was kind of an interesting
- 14:43take. But I liked it and still called him Norm.
- 14:47So obviously it's the right guy. And then we
- 14:49get to them fighting for what was the big machinery
- 14:54called again? Super Collider. Super Collider.
- 14:56That's right. Which I think looks cool as hell.
- 14:59It's really cool, yeah. And they get in a battle.
- 15:02Well, Miles doesn't. Miles is trying to hide.
- 15:04And Spider -Man. Peter Parker is fighting against
- 15:08Jorma, the Green Goblin. And Liev Scheiber makes
- 15:14his appearance as Kingpin. Golly. So I love this
- 15:19like version of the Kingpin, like visually, like
- 15:22big head, middle of his body, just like giant
- 15:25wide shoulders. How much do you think this guy
- 15:27spends on double doors? Like everywhere he like
- 15:29buys. He needs a double door. We got to talk
- 15:33about his dick, too. I just really want to know.
- 15:37What's going on with that dick? Is it a button?
- 15:42Is it big? Like, I don't know. How did it work
- 15:45with his wife? Yeah, and they had a child. Unless
- 15:48that child's adopted, something happened. Normal
- 15:50looking child, yeah. Where did the shoulders
- 15:52go? Puberty. Ah, doy. That's what happens. This
- 15:55specific... depiction of the kingpin is based
- 15:58on a oh god uh bilson kevich uh daredevil run
- 16:01a very kind of abstracted like version um awesome
- 16:05there's so much comic history in this movie yeah
- 16:07and i was i was wondering about that i figured
- 16:09there was always like nods that i was not getting
- 16:12you know things that were there for very specific
- 16:14reasons that people more educated in comics would
- 16:18know than i would um i love the design of kingpin
- 16:21i think it's really fucking cool the first time
- 16:23he shows up it's like solid black and he kind
- 16:25of emerges and all you can see is that fucking
- 16:27head and the like shirt lapels it's such a cool
- 16:31design he looks like he's mounted on a wall and
- 16:33the wall is his body That's cool. It's a good
- 16:37style for him. I like that they made him all
- 16:38black, though. Yeah. I think that worked really
- 16:41well for the visuals of him. All new, all black
- 16:44kingpin. Yeah. Yeah, that was a good choice.
- 16:46That was Daredevil with fucking Batman. Friends
- 16:50of Matt Damon. Ben Affleck. Ben Affleck. Daredevil.
- 16:54Way to get there, Matt Damon. Notable friend
- 16:57of Matt Damon. Yes, yes. He's not famous for
- 16:59anything else. So yeah, so Spider -Man gets in
- 17:02the fight. It looks like, and I... Looks like
- 17:04that Spider -Man saw something and he definitely
- 17:06got his butt whooped. And he tells Miles, hey,
- 17:09you still got to do this. Here's your here's
- 17:11your task. And Miles says, OK, I'll help you.
- 17:13And then Kingpin shows up, confronts Peter. Peter
- 17:16tells him you can't do this. And Kingpin kills
- 17:20him, which the first time I saw this, I was like,
- 17:22no, Spider -Man can't die. That's ridiculous.
- 17:25So has Kingpin killed Spider -Man? comic history
- 17:30that i don't know about or is that i mean in
- 17:33ultimate spider -man peter does die uh but he
- 17:36dies taking a bullet for captain america yeah
- 17:38uh okay well and kingpin must be pretty strong
- 17:42if he could i mean yeah spidey had kind of gotten
- 17:44his butt whooped but like he only hit him once
- 17:46and he was dead his big old ham fist that's true
- 17:49like mega strong yeah like for a normal person
- 17:53what isn't it like he supposedly has like 2 %
- 17:57body fat or something like that. He's just a
- 17:59fucking brick shithouse. Gosh. Okay. I gotta
- 18:04see that guy naked. I gotta see him. Rule 34.
- 18:07It exists somewhere. You know it exists somewhere.
- 18:10I'm not Googling that. You can do that on your
- 18:11own. Not on a work computer. Just look up what
- 18:14Kingpin's dick looks like. I'll do it. I'll fucking
- 18:18Google anything. Yeah, that won't be a problem.
- 18:21My FBI overlord will have to see it at some point.
- 18:24Exactly. looking at kingpin dick again just saved
- 18:29the photo nick quit googling it every week don't
- 18:34need that history you're not my dad one thing
- 18:38that um maybe a slight plot hole is okay so he
- 18:40kills spider -man and kingpin says get rid of
- 18:43the body It is, what, maybe an hour later that
- 18:46the news breaks that they found his body? Whoever
- 18:48got rid of the Spider -Man body did a terrible
- 18:50job of hiding it. Chuck it in the... It's like,
- 18:53well, outside. Like, this is a guy that... Take
- 18:57the mask off and people won't even know who he
- 18:59is. It'll just be dead Peter Parker. They didn't
- 19:00even take his costume off, apparently. Yeah,
- 19:02I don't think they cared that much. Chuck him
- 19:05in Times Square. Here you go. They wanted people
- 19:07to know. Leave him outside. It must be, like,
- 19:09mass trash collection day or whatever. bulk trash
- 19:13that's what they call it clearly he was clearly
- 19:15he was proud of having done it because when he
- 19:17threw his ball he had all of the waitstaff dressed
- 19:20as spider -man that's true yes yeah oh what a
- 19:25power play what am i also weird inviting mj to
- 19:27that Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, weird that
- 19:30you took the invite. I'd be like, you know, a
- 19:32little too fresh, a little too fresh. I'll do
- 19:34it without the free bread. Yeah, now they not
- 19:37know he's evil. OK, so then Peter B. Parker.
- 19:41Yes. How does he show up? I can't remember. He
- 19:44gets sucked through the thingy. Well, no, I remember
- 19:46that part. But like, how does he show up in Miles's
- 19:48life? So when Peter, when Spider, Peter Parker
- 19:52and Norman are fighting, Norman sticks him into
- 19:56the. magic ray the collider beam right and that
- 20:00like searches out all the like spider -men and
- 20:04that's how all the spider people get pulled in
- 20:06right i meant more like how does he actively
- 20:08in the movie meet miles at the he goes to his
- 20:13uh miles goes to the grave peter's grave oh that's
- 20:19there to look at his dead body apparently i mean
- 20:22you know if i woke up in a universe i was dead
- 20:25I might want to go check that out. I'd be curious.
- 20:28Yeah. Because you know what? You need that fucking
- 20:31flash selfie. Yes. Yes. That did have that scene
- 20:37has one of my favorite quotes. So like they are
- 20:39interacting. Miles zaps him. because he has a
- 20:42power that he didn't know then the cops are there
- 20:44the cop on the radio is just like uh it looks
- 20:48like a child dressed like spider -man is dragging
- 20:50a homeless corpse behind a train that was a really
- 20:55good one i didn't write that one down but it
- 20:57made the cut yeah i just i i love i can we just
- 21:01say how much peter b parker is just like the
- 21:04best spider -man like i love me a chubby out
- 21:08of shape or divorced sad spider -man with sweats
- 21:13i can relate to that so good and everyone's just
- 21:20dogging on him the whole time too it's like wow
- 21:22you are just like spider -man except a little
- 21:24older yeah a little fatter i love when he tells
- 21:29his origin story it's the same as uh chris pine
- 21:33spider -man but it's just i think add 10 more
- 21:36years onto it because they say chris pine spider
- 21:38-man's like 27 when he dies so this spider -man's
- 21:41like closer to 40 and he's like i broke my back
- 21:44uh aunt may died things with mj went bad but
- 21:48you know I was still I was still out there doing
- 21:51it. And it's just him in the spider suit in the
- 21:53shower crying. Well, when he gets sucked into
- 21:58that universe, too, he's like, well, you know,
- 22:00so I was doing my abs and my pushups and stuff.
- 22:03Pizza right in the mouth. And the pizza didn't
- 22:05even go with him. I felt so sad and sucked into
- 22:08another world. You want to have a snack? Jeez.
- 22:10He's got that burger place. That worked out.
- 22:13And Miles had to pay for it. Not really liquid
- 22:18right now. We kind of move forward a little bit
- 22:22to one thing that happens at least twice in this
- 22:25movie. Spider -Man, I know, they swing. The first
- 22:30of two times they take a bus to get somewhere.
- 22:33I mean, yeah, he's right. He probably couldn't
- 22:36spend that time training miles how to swing.
- 22:38They needed to get the thing fixed. But a bus?
- 22:41He does say you got to rest your legs. That's
- 22:43true. We're also kind of in the country. So like.
- 22:47Yeah, swinging all the way out there will be
- 22:48hard. Yeah, swinging all the way out there is
- 22:50going to be rough. Yeah, Spider -Man wouldn't
- 22:52do so well in like Iowa. He needs to be in a
- 22:54bigger city. That's why he's always in New York,
- 22:56it appears. Iowa would be a shitty spot for Spider
- 22:59-Man. Corn stalks? They're not that tall. Or
- 23:02strong. No. You also need the density of buildings.
- 23:06You know, growing up in San Francisco, I thought
- 23:08about this. Like, there's only a very small pocket
- 23:11where there are tall buildings. Like, Spider
- 23:14-Man in San Francisco could only really do about
- 23:1610 square blocks. It's kind of like Seattle in
- 23:19that way, too. It's not that much. And that's
- 23:22why Spider -Man is predominantly like Manhattan,
- 23:25too. You go to some of the other boroughs and
- 23:27it's not like Queens. There's not a whole lot
- 23:30to swing on in Queens. Any other city? Spider
- 23:33buggy. Yeah. Oh, there we go. Yeah, I did like
- 23:36seeing the spider buggy later, too. Yeah. All
- 23:39right. So we get to where they're going to the
- 23:42place to get the the the wait. Donner. Goober.
- 23:47Goober. Donner. Miles gets this USB stick from
- 23:51regular Peter Parker as he's before he dies and
- 23:54then breaks it. He immediately breaks it by.
- 23:57He was trying to leap of faith. Oh, I did like
- 24:00that scene, too, when he's trying to figure out
- 24:02if he can jump off of a building. And it's that
- 24:04going up the staircase, being on the edge, and
- 24:07then immediately it's just going down the staircase.
- 24:08And then looking up at the building again, being
- 24:11like, can I do this? And then the slightly shorter
- 24:13one next. So like, oh, that one's so much better.
- 24:15It's two stories shorter. He lives. Great little
- 24:20call out and love letter to the original Tobey
- 24:22Maguire Spider -Man initial web swing. Yes. Straight
- 24:26in. okay so they're getting the uh the thing
- 24:33fixed the donger see that's a problem now that's
- 24:37stuck in my head i don't know it's gonna be the
- 24:38donger for the rest of the episode all right
- 24:40so we got they're getting the donger fixed they
- 24:42go and peter says all right i'm not actually
- 24:44going to teach you right now you're going to
- 24:46be the lookout here's my plan to get in has a
- 24:48really good plan which is immediately foiled
- 24:51because after he leaves who pulls up kingpin
- 24:54ready to uh check on things going on there and
- 24:57that frankenstein motherfucker tombstone tombstone
- 25:00who i think i do like how his initial plan involved
- 25:04at the end grabbing a bagel and while we're going
- 25:07through the escapes like and grabbing a bagel
- 25:10that's one of my favorite lines is when they're
- 25:14chasing them out he got a bagel i laughed harder
- 25:17at that than i should have i'll be honest i love
- 25:19that they call back to that in uh the second
- 25:23movie yeah and across the spider -verse i need
- 25:25to re -watch that i don't remember that part
- 25:26it's part of the spot's origin yeah he's the
- 25:29guy that gets hit with the bagel he's the one
- 25:30who got bageled yeah he turns into the spot later
- 25:34oh that's right oh i forgot about that oh man
- 25:37that's that's perfect yeah that's right so he's
- 25:42peter and now miles are in there because miles
- 25:44is like oh my gosh kingpin's there watch out
- 25:47and that's when peter and miles get everything
- 25:50set up to steal it and who should walk in but
- 25:54uh live live walks in and is like oh this is
- 25:59fascinating you're peter parker but you're not
- 26:00our peter parker and you're starting to your
- 26:03items are not liking this this is bad for you
- 26:06and i can't wait to watch you die and he's like
- 26:09what's your name olivia octavius yep yep yep
- 26:13my friends call me live Yes, which fucking I
- 26:18love it, Han. Terrific, yeah. We were talking
- 26:20about the cast earlier. How many of these people
- 26:22either already had or were about to have MCU
- 26:25credits to them? Like, if there's ten in the
- 26:29cast, eight of them had it. If you got Agatha
- 26:31there, I mean... It's a great group of people.
- 26:35Oh, my gosh. So, hell, I mean, obviously, Cage
- 26:38is going to be having his own MCU appearance.
- 26:40So, yeah, so we meet Olivia Octavius. Doc Ock
- 26:43is there, and... Does her best to fight off two
- 26:47spider people. What did you do for weird little
- 26:49medical arms? Oh, I like them. I thought they
- 26:52worked for this character. My favorite callback
- 26:55in this entire movie is like, it's like, what's
- 26:58your name? It's like, but your friends call you
- 27:00Doc Ock. It's like, no, my friends call me Liv.
- 27:02My enemies call me Doc Ock. And when they raid
- 27:05Aunt May's house later, Aunt May just goes, Liv.
- 27:09i i wrote that one down actually too oh great
- 27:12it's live it's like oh they're friends okay that's
- 27:16cool i did think it was interesting her arms
- 27:18are so long that they could like hold her up
- 27:19and she's not actually touching the ground for
- 27:21most of the time she's doc ock yeah it's like
- 27:24oh okay you you just don't want to walk that
- 27:26much listen would you uh actually good point
- 27:28no i let them do all that for me the best doc
- 27:30ox always kind of Yeah. Sit above the ground
- 27:33like that. I feel like I'd be more reclined if
- 27:35I were a Doc Ock. Oh, like recumbent? Yeah. Like
- 27:38recumbent arms? Recumbent octa. Just fucking
- 27:41chill out. Well, if they're that. That's a hedonism
- 27:45bot just getting slid in. Just walking on the
- 27:48little like octopus fingers. You got it. Well,
- 27:51couldn't you make it into a rocking chair? They
- 27:53were very. Oh, I'm sure you could do all sorts
- 27:55of things. You could turn it into a sex swing
- 27:58if you wanted. Yeah. Easily. sure she has you
- 28:02know why the heck not so right hold on thinking
- 28:04about it nice was it with kingpin what that dick
- 28:09like it's the only dick i know what it looks
- 28:11like in this movie you had a lot of kingpin dong
- 28:13in this already so i haven't googled anybody
- 28:16else's penis yet not yet ain't over yet uh so
- 28:20she beat she uh defeats two of the spider -men
- 28:22only for us to now meet not materials they need
- 28:32to actually make the new donger so i love when
- 28:35they're when they're escaping and peter is just
- 28:40like well great news we don't need the monitor
- 28:42i forgot about that oh and that's one thing i
- 28:48did skip over he also finds out he can turn invisible
- 28:50miles does right which is also pretty important
- 28:53and another one of his powers which is that new
- 28:55to the movie sean or is that uh that's part of
- 28:57my stuff interesting i didn't know he has the
- 29:00venom strike anytime is invisible oh that's that's
- 29:02he's got like predator camouflage ah that's cool
- 29:08yeah i like that and then yes but what did they
- 29:11do to get back Back on the bus. So they take
- 29:14the bus home, and Peter is taking a bit of a
- 29:16nap, so that probably actually works out pretty
- 29:17well for them. So that's good. And Gwen actually
- 29:20introduces herself, and we get to hear Gwen's
- 29:22origin story, where in her world, Peter Parker's
- 29:24her good friend, who she can't save, so that
- 29:26kind of becomes her version of Uncle Ben. And
- 29:30in that one, she actually saves her dad, too,
- 29:33which I know is not often Gwen Stacy's story,
- 29:35too. So I thought that was kind of interesting,
- 29:37a little twist on that one. Well, and so in Spider
- 29:40-Gwen, yeah, it's her story. is like she loses
- 29:42her best friend who was peter who in her universe
- 29:45was the green goblin which i think is part of
- 29:50uh beyond the spider verse they like go more
- 29:54in depth into that. That's kind of cool. I was
- 29:56wondering because when they show his body, I
- 29:58thought I saw something that looked like scales
- 29:59or something, but I was like, I'm just probably
- 30:01seeing he was wet. And it's like, oh, no, he's
- 30:04green. Yeah, very much so. All right. So then
- 30:08they go back and that's when they go meet with
- 30:10Aunt May, if I'm not mistaken, right? Three of
- 30:12them go and Peter's like, I'm not sure I'm ready
- 30:14for this. Yes, because I need a lab. I did. I
- 30:17did appreciate the May's intro to their lab that
- 30:21they got to work in. Oh, cool. a little shed
- 30:24with my stuff in it that's uh this is a little
- 30:26pretentious but uh is this like your shed yeah
- 30:29and uh i also did appreciate too and i i don't
- 30:35know the spider -man costumes that well but they
- 30:36did have the one with the cape call back to earlier
- 30:38when miles was like a cape and he's like no capes
- 30:41the sorcerer supreme spider -man nice a little
- 30:46loop in a doctor strange there they also have
- 30:48my least favorite spider -man costume of all
- 30:50time in those cases the sony spider -man video
- 30:54game costumes in there with like the big white
- 30:56spider and the white guy man why do people like
- 30:59the advanced suit that much like i don't like
- 31:01that one i think it's stupid i don't like the
- 31:04dirt bike looking gloves with the like oversized
- 31:06knuckle protectors yeah it doesn't do it for
- 31:10me so i agree what's the best spider suit probably
- 31:15the one he's got now in the mcu where he made
- 31:17it himself and it's all the correct colors and
- 31:19i always hated that it was like the tony stark
- 31:21one classics oh yeah that's the thing is like
- 31:22i love iron man obviously but i thought them
- 31:25iron spidering him for most of the two movies
- 31:27i was like that's not really spider -man is it
- 31:29comic wise my favorite is probably the ramita
- 31:33black and red which they do uh homage to in um
- 31:38the second spider -man movie when he makes his
- 31:40own suit at the end yeah yeah um boy yeah i really
- 31:45like superior i think that's a really good suit
- 31:48uh future foundation's a really good suit too
- 31:50i do love the future foundation suit that one's
- 31:53sick yeah yeah those are probably my favorites
- 31:56Nice. Well, and we've met his suits. And who
- 31:59else do we meet in this scene? One half hour
- 32:02in, finally, our good friend Nicolas Cage shows
- 32:04up. The other Spider -Mans. Spider -Noir. And
- 32:06two other Spider -Mans. Yeah, Sean, you actually
- 32:09told me this. It's Spider -Man, right? Plural
- 32:12for spider. Oh, Spider -Mans. Oh, okay. And Gwen's
- 32:15there, so we can't say that. They say Spider
- 32:17-Man in this movie, which bugs me, because it's
- 32:20his name. It's their name, not their title. So
- 32:22it shouldn't be. it shouldn't change you should
- 32:24just add an s to the end which they do do in
- 32:27um into uh no way home when um the three spider
- 32:36-mans are gonna go like fight the sinister six
- 32:38tom holland when they're jumping off the statue
- 32:40of liberty goes uh spider -mans go and i'm like
- 32:43vindication course corrected i like that well
- 32:47and in this one i did hear at least once they
- 32:49did say spider people because they were trying
- 32:52to be yep there's at least two females there
- 32:54so it's like spider people i like that they're
- 32:56inclusive um but yeah so and a cartoon pig yeah
- 33:01that's true it's actually a cartoon spider who
- 33:04was bitten by a radioactive pig I read about
- 33:07that this morning. I was like, I thought, I thought
- 33:09it came from the Simpsons to be honest. I thought
- 33:11it was an homage to, yeah. It's like, where did
- 33:14this come? I mean, I love John Mulaney. So the
- 33:15voice was perfect, but that one came out of left
- 33:18field for me. I did like that. His nose was the
- 33:20same as his face. Can you float through the air?
- 33:27I have a freshly baked pie. Surprise it. But
- 33:35then we get the last, well, three of the last
- 33:38four origin stories because we get Spider Noir,
- 33:40we get Spider Pig, and we get the, I can't remember
- 33:43the name. Penny Parker. Penny Parker. And yeah,
- 33:46I guess it's probably as good a time as any to
- 33:48bore Nicolas Cage. I mean, it's a very small
- 33:51role, but very good. And you know what? Very
- 33:54understated in all the right ways. I just watched
- 33:57a supercut of Spider -Verse only. the scenes
- 34:01that have spider -man noir in them and it comes
- 34:04out to about five minutes and 40 seconds of screen
- 34:06time that sounds about right i thought it would
- 34:08be less yeah no he's cool i like his style such
- 34:11a good job he's beating up nazis i like drinking
- 34:16i like drinking egg creams and fighting nazis
- 34:18the wind follows the wind smells like rain i
- 34:24do love when he shows up and his like cape is
- 34:27blowing and they're in a basement it's like yeah
- 34:28they wind we're in a basement how is he sometimes
- 34:33i burn a match just to feel something i had a
- 34:39question about it though so he he's a peter parker
- 34:41in this one but in the new show he's ben reilly
- 34:45so what's the deal and miller have said that
- 34:48this is a standalone that spider -man is a standalone
- 34:50thing it has nothing to do with spider -verse
- 34:52they're not connected to anything else it's just
- 34:54going to be its own standalone yeah everything
- 34:57i think i mean this one he is peter benjamin
- 35:00parker though too i read that somewhere so okay
- 35:02so they're they're it's its own thing but they
- 35:04do an homage to it okay yeah well so ben reilly
- 35:07for those who don't know bill is the clone of
- 35:11is the clone of peter parker from the 90s who
- 35:14becomes scarlet spider which i do like the scarlet
- 35:17spider suit off as well that's so good that's
- 35:20so 90s i love that hoodie though yeah and so
- 35:23many pockets he's got like pockets on belts a
- 35:26red singlet red singlet blue hoodie with a spider
- 35:30on it with the sleeves torn off yep so like the
- 35:34first toby mcguire suit then right when he was
- 35:37wrestling the guy pretty much pretty close yeah
- 35:39yeah so that's where ben reilly the name ben
- 35:41reilly comes from for uh spider noir OK, that
- 35:44makes more sense. Yeah, I feel better about that
- 35:45now. OK, so we meet them and they all and Miles
- 35:49says, I'm ready to help you guys. This will be
- 35:50great. And then he fails a test with all of them.
- 35:53Like pretty quick succession. Yeah. Performance
- 35:56anxiety. Oh man. Puberty. It's a puberty thing.
- 35:59Don't worry. I mean, at least two of them are
- 36:02kind of rooting for him. So that was kind of
- 36:04nice, but also I don't blame the other three.
- 36:06They just met this guy and he's supposed to save
- 36:08them and send them home. Okay. Yeah. You, you
- 36:10couldn't, you couldn't take a punch. You couldn't
- 36:13deal with this robot and a pig just beat you.
- 36:15So I wouldn't trust him either. If I were them.
- 36:17I mean, that pig's pretty impressive like dropping
- 36:21anvils on uh people later in the movie and he's
- 36:25got a lot of skills i did make one of my other
- 36:27uh favorite lines from again five his five minutes
- 36:31uh when they're all huddling up talking about
- 36:33how they can't trust him and uh and spider noir
- 36:36goes he's looking right at us while we talk about
- 36:38him Just like, oops, maybe we should talk quieter.
- 36:43Oh, and then he goes up on the elevator and they're
- 36:45like, see, he can disappear. So we get through
- 36:51that and he's he's all sad. So who does he go
- 36:54to? Uncle Aaron again, except he just goes to
- 36:57his apartment. And then the twist that I don't
- 36:59know. I didn't see coming the first time I saw
- 37:01this. Yeah. So Uncle Aaron is Prowler, who has
- 37:04been a thorn in everyone's side most of the movie
- 37:07now. And poor Miles just finds us out right now.
- 37:10Yeah. Not great. OK, I've got one gripe with
- 37:13Prowler because like that suit is cool. The like
- 37:15tech is cool. The motorcycle. Oh, man. Not your
- 37:21bag, huh? No, it's just like he can go super
- 37:24fast. He can run, but he's just got this like
- 37:25dork ass bike. Where does he keep it? He was
- 37:30ready to go, too. I mean, who has a garage in
- 37:33Brooklyn? Yeah, not a fucking chance. He lives
- 37:37in a fucking apartment. Yeah, yeah. Well, and
- 37:40that was a part of it on the roof. Can anyone
- 37:42else put a bag over it? He might actually. It's
- 37:44a very Batman of him. But when he is right in
- 37:48front of Miles, He can't see him yet. Miles is
- 37:51two floors down on the fire escape and all of
- 37:54a sudden he can see his outline. He switched
- 37:55like a different. Okay. So he has like a. Yeah,
- 37:58he went to, like, thermal infrared, whatever.
- 38:01Okay, good. Because that bothered me. I missed
- 38:03the switch. So I was just like, okay. He was
- 38:05literally, like, you could have smelled him,
- 38:07his breath, if he had had, like, garlic. Like,
- 38:09how did you miss him before? But, okay, I feel
- 38:12better about that. Gripe over. So he gets away
- 38:15and goes back to May's house when we get to the
- 38:18wonderful, ugh, it's Liv, line. And we have,
- 38:22actually, a pretty epic battle between the Sinister
- 38:26Six, basically, right? Yeah. I do love this scene
- 38:29when we cut back to May's house and we see Spider
- 38:33Noir like on the couch with the Rubik's Cube
- 38:35and he's just guessing at the colors. Purple?
- 38:39No. And then at the end of the movie he takes
- 38:44the Rubik's Cube and he's like, I don't know
- 38:45what it is, but I'm going to figure it out. Take
- 38:49this with me. So good. Yeah, the Rubik's Cube
- 38:53is a great bit. How did you not lose it during
- 38:55the fight? So I love like any Sinister Six is
- 39:01a great combination of Sinister Six for me. My
- 39:03favorites always only include five members, but
- 39:07there's still the Sinister Six. There's auditions
- 39:11for that six part. It's fine. But I really like
- 39:13this Scorpion. I'm not like I don't know if I
- 39:17love like the mechanical leg version. I do like
- 39:21what Gargan's like when his suit is just like
- 39:24part of him when it's just like. molded onto
- 39:27his body because because of an accident so he
- 39:29can never take it off that's why he's okay um
- 39:32but i like this and i like uh that he only spoke
- 39:36spanish portuguese yeah and in the version i
- 39:41watched they at least translated it for us so
- 39:42that was kind of like oh that's what he's saying
- 39:44okay yeah he just he's gonna threaten to kill
- 39:46him that makes sense um but that's also where
- 39:48we get the scene where miles reveals himself
- 39:51to uncle aaron and that's a bad phrasing but
- 39:54it's the second time i've done that that's why
- 39:57we didn't have to google that one we know what
- 39:59that looked like we're actually all on We're
- 40:03all in trouble now. Busted. Busted. Sorry, guys.
- 40:08I lose my job. I shut down the podcast. This
- 40:11is terrible. But reveals that he is the guy he's
- 40:15been chasing this whole time, which eventually
- 40:17gets Uncle Aaron. Well, eventually, two seconds
- 40:18later, gets him killed. Yeah. So I like that
- 40:21Aaron was going to let him go. Yeah. Well, and
- 40:23man, Kingpin obviously knew he wasn't going to
- 40:26do it pretty quick because he's sitting outside.
- 40:28Do it. Yeah. He takes one step back real quick.
- 40:31Yeah. Not even a warning shot and shoot him in
- 40:34the butt or something that way. It's like, all
- 40:35right, you're down and injured. I'm going to
- 40:37yell at you. All right. That's my other gripe.
- 40:38Kingpin, obviously like superhuman strength,
- 40:41whatever. Badass guy. A lot of gun work. Yeah.
- 40:44Well, he's a normal person. Yeah. He's not fast.
- 40:48Yeah. I can't imagine he's a climber. yeah probably
- 40:53muscle doesn't seem like he's very like limber
- 40:56yeah probably can't like get over a short fence
- 40:59very well not quickly struggles with shrubbery
- 41:02knock it over but yeah you're right he's not
- 41:04getting to the roof of a house pretty quickly
- 41:06he's not flying i mean he's not getting in a
- 41:08house very quickly yeah may didn't have the big
- 41:11doors like when we see his like his fight at
- 41:13the end of the movie when they're in like the
- 41:15flying subway car and yeah And you just see him
- 41:18like through the door frame. Yeah, it's just
- 41:20his head and just his back body. And when he
- 41:23eventually does go through that door, he has
- 41:24to like tear his way through it. Yeah, he tears
- 41:26through it. Yeah, he wasn't going to catch his
- 41:28wife and son really quickly that way. They were
- 41:31they were fitting through all the doors and he
- 41:32was not. Do you think he has to ride in cars
- 41:35with like gull wing doors? Only 100 % or convertibles,
- 41:39too. He's not like you can't have a roof on.
- 41:42every car is a t -top yeah he's got money he
- 41:47can he can live that comfortable life yeah oh
- 41:49i would love to see the kingpin just rolling
- 41:51around in like a fucking trans am again google
- 41:56that i'm sure that that's probably easier to
- 41:58find than the other thing so yeah no they go
- 42:00hand in hand yeah yeah that's true it's a real
- 42:02smoky new trans am When was the last time you
- 42:07were on the Internet where anything is easier
- 42:09to find than a dick on the Internet? Touche.
- 42:15So then Aaron passes and the dad finds Aaron's
- 42:20brother, finds him and thinks it's Spider -Man
- 42:23that did it. So now he's mad at the new Spider
- 42:26-Man again, but still can't find his son, goes
- 42:30to have a chat with him. I probably should go
- 42:33back to the Spider -Man officially firing him,
- 42:35though, too. Because he goes back to his apartment
- 42:37and they're like, yeah, we need the donger from
- 42:40you, dude. Give me your donger. You're not ready
- 42:44for this. Whip out that donger. Yeah. And Jake
- 42:46Johnson's Spider -Man's like, I'm sacrificing
- 42:49myself. This is how it's going to be. You're
- 42:51not ready yet. Sometime you will be. So kind
- 42:55of an emotional moment for him. A bummer. And
- 42:58then gets tied up so he can't speak. And the
- 43:01dad comes to talk to him and obviously still
- 43:03can't talk to him. Nice touching moment there.
- 43:06Again, a good, good cop. Good kid. Good kid.
- 43:09Yeah. Fuck. Yeah. Again, for this podcast, it's
- 43:13terrible. A good cop. Son of a. Well, this actually.
- 43:17Son of a good cop. Yeah. A more emotional fellow
- 43:23myself. So when he's talking to his son and I
- 43:25got a little verklempt and that's when I noticed
- 43:28that it's not NYPD. over in this world because
- 43:31i was like okay don't oh oh that's a nice little
- 43:35like okay so we can say that pdny has a good
- 43:38cop yeah not nypd though different universe i
- 43:43do like all the weird little universe like changes
- 43:46um i don't know if you like are paying attention
- 43:48to like the times square ads yep there's a lot
- 43:52of like what uh like what's the uh john mulaney
- 43:55um nick kroll show like uh oh hello or whatever
- 43:59oh yeah i forgot about that show there was like
- 44:02a version of that uh on the never even heard
- 44:05of that well and you know steph curry shows up
- 44:07in an ad over there there's um uh seth rogan
- 44:11was in a couple of ads in the background one
- 44:13of the other lines is uh the phone company is
- 44:15c mobile not t yeah so yeah there was a little
- 44:18little digs here and there like ah okay kind
- 44:20of which turns out to be pretty important on
- 44:22the second one too yeah they had a show called
- 44:24like in They have a show called Oh, Hello. And
- 44:27I think on Times Square in the background, it's
- 44:29the same poster, but I think it's called like,
- 44:30oh, hey, there or something. It's like Teen Titans
- 44:35go to the movies all over again. Oh, heck yeah.
- 44:37I need to watch that. Coca -Cola with a K. Yes.
- 44:43So then we're almost to the end, actually. Yeah,
- 44:46we're getting there. Yeah, we're getting there.
- 44:49gala event and then straight to the collider
- 44:52well and it gets to the part that always any
- 44:54of these superhero movies where they have that
- 44:56montage where they're like figuring it out and
- 44:58there's that really awesome song in the background
- 44:59you're like okay yeah okay i'm ready to run through
- 45:02a wall too like the good yeah good on them that's
- 45:05why i like these movies these are perfect for
- 45:07that sort of thing yeah what up danger is a fucking
- 45:09banger track for this also oh yeah i listened
- 45:13to the song without the the visuals today james
- 45:15i was like oh okay yeah this should be on my
- 45:17running running list right now this is this is
- 45:19really good and the lyrics were great i do love
- 45:22how the spider man spider mans get into uh the
- 45:26gala because they're like how are we gonna sneak
- 45:28in and then they look down and all of the wait
- 45:30staff are wearing spider man masks because and
- 45:33nick cage goes it's in poor taste but can't be
- 45:36that easy cut to all of them just with bow ties
- 45:41walking through the gala It is that easy. That
- 45:45was one of the lines I wrote down. Except Penny
- 45:46in the table. No, that was flipping perfect.
- 45:53And yeah, look at those pigs down there. I'm
- 45:55right here. But yeah, and then we get to the
- 46:00final battle where they're down. Now, I kind
- 46:04of miss this. That building is directly on top
- 46:06of where the collider is, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 46:08Okay, for some reason when it blew up, it looked
- 46:10like it was further away for some reason. So
- 46:12they lost an entire building that day in that
- 46:14world because damn. I do want to say because
- 46:18we're about to get to the like, this is right
- 46:20when we do the reveal of Miles's costume and
- 46:23Miles like finally like takes that leap of faith.
- 46:25We get that awesome like original trailer scene
- 46:28where he's like jumps off the building and like
- 46:30he's falling towards the ground. the camera makes
- 46:33it look like he's like floating up amazing but
- 46:36i love this version of that costume where he
- 46:38just takes a spider -man costume and spray paints
- 46:40it black and the spider itself is like spray
- 46:43painted my only critique is like that thing would
- 46:48smell so bad yes oh yeah yeah it would be terrible
- 46:51probably would have smelled them right away it
- 46:52would be flaking off all over the place like
- 46:55he would turn invisible and you could just find
- 46:57him by the trail of like paint And you will know
- 47:02us by our trail of paint. In the Miles Morales
- 47:04video game and in Sony Spider -Man 2 video game,
- 47:07as soon as I unlock that costume, it's the only
- 47:10thing I'll wear. I don't blame you. One of my
- 47:14other favorite lines from not Nick Cage in this
- 47:16was when he shows up at the thing and Lily Tomlin's
- 47:19sitting there, Aunt May's sitting there, and
- 47:20just like, took you long enough. It's like, thank
- 47:22you. That sets up this next scene very nicely.
- 47:27Yeah, she got it. All right. So, yeah, now it's
- 47:30fight time. Collider is on. Everything's going
- 47:33real wrong. Real bad, real fast. And Miles shows
- 47:37up to help turn the ship around a little bit
- 47:40there with his invisibility and punching Doc
- 47:42Ock a little bit. Yeah. I thought that was a
- 47:45good way to enter and everyone excited. And then,
- 47:49yeah, Kingpin turning it up, obviously. It was
- 47:51like, all right, I think I can see my wife and
- 47:53child, but let's really go. And obviously it's
- 47:57not working really well. Yeah. this final fight
- 48:00is animated is just so fucking cool and trippy
- 48:03and uh i mean it blows me away every time i i
- 48:07can just watch that scene over and over it was
- 48:10like phantom trucks flying all over the place
- 48:12buildings are blowing out and they collapsing
- 48:15on themselves the insane amount of color yes
- 48:18oh i do love how like they point out like well
- 48:21this is bad but it looks really cool yeah Well,
- 48:26that was one of my favorite parts when the three
- 48:28spiders are, oh, here we go. This is going to
- 48:30take a while. Doc Ock's approaching them. Boom,
- 48:34truck. Yeah. Peter's reaction. It was a visual,
- 48:38but like the little hand over the mouth like,
- 48:40oh, well, never mind. That was good. Yeah, it's
- 48:46your classic shark eaten by bigger shark. Yeah.
- 48:50Moment. Yes. It's like, I can't. was that the
- 48:53end of her i don't know i guess i'll find out
- 48:55if i wouldn't watch the second one um and then
- 48:57he's able to send the spiders home so that's
- 49:00good and uh even even though jake johnson spider
- 49:02-man's like i can do this i want to do this it's
- 49:05like you're just afraid to go back to talk to
- 49:07your mj yeah get out of here i got this because
- 49:10what what was the line it's like i don't want
- 49:12to see a spider -man die i don't either yeah
- 49:15i thought that was good yeah And then Kingpin
- 49:19versus Miles. That's the thing I was a little
- 49:25surprised about because Kingpin hits Miles pretty
- 49:28hard too. He got up. So I don't know if it's
- 49:32just... Miles didn't have internal bleeding already
- 49:34because when he kills Peter, it's like Peter
- 49:36is on the brink of death at that point. Yeah.
- 49:40So he just did the final blow. Yeah. Yeah, no.
- 49:43And that's another good, good cop situation,
- 49:46too, because at this point, I think I think the
- 49:48dad's still a little like, I think I can trust
- 49:51Spider -Man. And then it's like, oh, OK, I'm
- 49:53rooting for him. I was wrong. And it's like,
- 49:55thank you. Yeah. Yeah, that was cool. And I like
- 49:59that the finishing move that he does on Kingpin
- 50:01is from Uncle Aaron. The shoulder touch. I love
- 50:05when they throw the hay up behind him. Yeah,
- 50:09that was cool. It's cool. It's a good way to
- 50:13finish it. Kingpin's gigantic ass body hits the
- 50:16button. Yeah. Which is also what he calls sex.
- 50:21He got there. He brought the button back. I love
- 50:25it. Oh, that's good. And then, yeah, the classic
- 50:29Spider -Man stringing up the bad guy for the
- 50:31cops to take. I thought that was good. The I
- 50:34love you at the end obviously brings that all
- 50:36together. I was. That was cool. And then I don't
- 50:40understand fully, but like the way that they
- 50:41can talk to each other still through the portals,
- 50:44I probably should understand a little bit better.
- 50:47But, you know, Gwen was able to reach out to
- 50:48him pretty easily. So I was I was happy, obviously,
- 50:50but it was like, oh, I didn't know it was going
- 50:52to be quite that simple for them. That they bring
- 50:54back from the next movie. OK, yeah, that's the
- 50:58next one. And the fucking fancy wrist thing.
- 51:01Oh, that's right. So it allows them to travel
- 51:03through. So she's able to open up that portal
- 51:05and be like, hey. put her hand on his shoulder
- 51:08yeah it's perfect but uh no to just to wrap it
- 51:12up just uh like you guys all said i'm gonna be
- 51:14boring too it's a perfect movie yeah it's so
- 51:17good in so many levels and i feel a little bad
- 51:19because poor nick cage hasn't gotten talked about
- 51:21much but the way spider -man noir works that's
- 51:24exactly what he would want that's true moving
- 51:26dark and silence yeah i mean talking about his
- 51:29performance it is great and it does stand out
- 51:31like the my favorite story from the production
- 51:33of this is one of the interviews where it's like
- 51:36yeah like on nicholas cage is like first day
- 51:38he did a couple line reads and kept getting notes
- 51:40and after like the third note he's like oh you
- 51:42just want me to go full cage oh so even he says
- 51:47full cage i love that he knows five million dollars
- 51:51a movie you may as well know how you're gonna
- 51:53get that do we know did he get five million for
- 51:55this one too i don't know i didn't even look
- 51:57up the budget for this one this time i think
- 51:59it was like three three dollars three dollars
- 52:01yeah they nailed it with that budget they really
- 52:03stretched it out they got their most for it yeah
- 52:06well i mean we kind of gave sean the sean in
- 52:0860 seconds thing i we were dorothy and i were
- 52:11sitting there watching i was like did lake bell
- 52:13did she even come for an hour for this movie
- 52:15like she did three lines as the wife i 10 minutes
- 52:19in and out and she probably got paid for a full
- 52:21hour i at least for a full hour good golly that's
- 52:24not easy the visuals of this whole i mean that's
- 52:28what this movie really kind of originally sold
- 52:30itself on and happened to also just be the best
- 52:34one of the best spider -man movies ever um and
- 52:38it's just it's so visually stunning i remember
- 52:42at one point sony was talking about trying to
- 52:44like trademark or trademark or copyright like
- 52:47the visual style of the film i don't think that
- 52:50played yeah i don't think you can do that but
- 52:53But I remember them wanting to do that. And just
- 52:56the producers, Lord and Miller, like the shit
- 52:59they're doing with cinema at this point, like
- 53:02just visually creative stuff. I just saw Project
- 53:05Hail Mary, so I want to talk about Rocky. Oh
- 53:08yeah, that was another really good movie. Very,
- 53:10very good movie. Also Lord and Miller produced,
- 53:13and I think they directed that one. uh yeah they
- 53:16also did the lego movie so like just oh it's
- 53:18kind of tied in that movie is pretty good too
- 53:20yeah they're tied in for like really great subversive
- 53:24visual storytelling well something different
- 53:27i mean that's what people always are commenting
- 53:29on with movies it's like something just a little
- 53:31bit different and that will still be amazing
- 53:33i want more of this story this could have stood
- 53:36by itself totally this could have been a one
- 53:39and done and not have to do anything else but
- 53:41i want more miles ross i want more of these characters
- 53:44I want more of the Nicolas Cage. I'm really looking
- 53:46forward to the live action. I watched the trailers
- 53:48for it last night just to kind of remind myself.
- 53:50It's going to be good. I honestly don't know
- 53:52if I want to watch it in color or black and white.
- 53:54I'm all black and white. Yeah, for sure. I'm
- 53:56sure at some point I'll watch it in true color.
- 53:59I'm going to watch each episode twice. I'm going
- 54:01to watch black and white and color because I
- 54:03want to be able to talk about both for the podcast.
- 54:04But I'm most excited for black and white. Me
- 54:07too. Yeah, it's so visually beautiful. I think
- 54:11the one thing that I wanted to say about this
- 54:13movie that I think stood out most to me as a
- 54:16real success is that Peter Parker's a fucking
- 54:19teenager, right? You follow him along, he gets
- 54:22a little bit older, but he's a kid. Usually,
- 54:26Spider -Man is like a kid, and Morales is a perfect
- 54:29representation of that because instead of having
- 54:32a fucking 27 -year -old Tobey Maguire playing
- 54:34a high schooler, you've got... an animation you
- 54:37know I mean he looks like a kid he acts like
- 54:39a kid he's awkward as fuck with a girl you know
- 54:41it's like it hits really well in a way that I
- 54:44think the other ones don't because you have to
- 54:46sort of suspend disbelief that like Andrew Garfield
- 54:50is like an awkward teenager oh eat shit Tom Holland
- 54:55said he was 16 I was like no well at the time
- 54:59Andrew Garfield was also older than toby mcguire
- 55:02was in his first spider -man movie right wow
- 55:04i didn't know that not every peter parker is
- 55:07also like the original like iteration of him
- 55:11wasn't like uh a bumbling nerd either so yeah
- 55:15different versions yeah but yeah i mean for some
- 55:18reason that always resonated with me that he's
- 55:20like a younger one he's not like a god or you
- 55:23know whatever an old you know billionaire who
- 55:26can build robot suits like the original portrayal
- 55:30of peter parker he was like he was he was kind
- 55:33of a dick yeah that's right he was a little snarky
- 55:36and he was just a dick he got beat up by flash
- 55:39and he was like you know i'll teach you one of
- 55:40these days i'll beat you like he was not like
- 55:43the funny charming talk his way out of it that
- 55:45we think of him now no he definitely had a chip
- 55:47on his shoulder yeah and i did like that that
- 55:51they were able to with all all all the spider
- 55:53people all had their little, like, quips and
- 55:55stuff along the way, which was nice for the character.
- 55:57And it's interesting, I didn't realize that he
- 55:58was kind of, maybe not a bully, but kind of a
- 56:01bully wannabe if he's, like, getting his butt
- 56:03whooped and then he's like, all right, oh, look,
- 56:05I have these powers. Take that, Flash. Like,
- 56:07I think of him as more of that lovable one -liner
- 56:10guy, right? You have a metal -armed dude, like,
- 56:12you know, in the middle of a fight, you're bringing
- 56:14that up. I was just looking at what other animated
- 56:17films came out in 2018 and kind of like that.
- 56:22uh divergence of style and like how vastly different
- 56:25it was than everything else because this was
- 56:27like the time of like Wreck -It Ralph and Smallfoot
- 56:30and a bunch of that style Incredibles 2 was another
- 56:34one so there wasn't a lot uh even like getting
- 56:37close to this sort of thing it was an art piece
- 56:40yes yeah yeah it definitely changed the animation
- 56:43game but the closest thing to now be the demon
- 56:46pop hunters are they k -pop demon hunters similar
- 56:50they kind of run in i mean it's a similar art
- 56:52studio or the same art studio or like a branch
- 56:55of it yeah okay so i think that they they definitely
- 56:58understood the value of what they created and
- 57:00you know trying to recreate that is not going
- 57:03to be perfect yeah i think that that movie has
- 57:06some of the style and then mutant mayhem the
- 57:09oh yeah turtles movie not the same style but
- 57:12you can see that like it definitely uh yeah yeah
- 57:17yeah it's that appreciation of comic book art
- 57:20you know like in the style and that it all you
- 57:22can you can put this into a new medium and still
- 57:24have that that feeling which is i think really
- 57:26impressive watching this film again thinking
- 57:29about the second one i just i love how versatile
- 57:32they've made this character and how much they've
- 57:34done with this character over so many years and
- 57:36i just wanted to like discuss weird obscure spider
- 57:39-mans um my favorite from the peak 90s spider
- 57:43-man does anyone remember spider hulk no holy
- 57:46smokes it was a mini series where like spider
- 57:49-man got in a fight with the hulk uh and like
- 57:52gained hulk power so it's just it's just the
- 57:55hulk web swinging like in a tore -up spider -man
- 57:58costume It was terrible, but visually it was
- 58:01just spectacular. Well, we might get that next
- 58:04year with the new Tom Holland one. So maybe do
- 58:08you. This is far more current, but like a rec
- 58:11rap or whatever from like a year or two ago.
- 58:14Yeah, that was weird. I had no idea. But yeah,
- 58:21there was some weird shit happening. Yeah, it
- 58:23was a weird one. You can slap the Spider -Man
- 58:25logo on something, it's going to move. I mean,
- 58:27I know it's from the next movie, but I really,
- 58:29really like Spider -Punk. Oh my gosh. I hope
- 58:32he's so fucking cool. I hope he's hella cool.
- 58:33I was so pumped I wasn't in this one. There was
- 58:36an era, this is when I kind of fell off comics
- 58:38because I was going to art school and I just
- 58:40didn't have the money for it. When they were
- 58:42doing the weekly Spider -Man series. it was after
- 58:44brand new day um but when they kind of like rewrote
- 58:48like spider -man's backstory and realized that
- 58:51like oh peter's like just as smart as tony stark
- 58:55they're like why doesn't peter start a company
- 58:57why doesn't peter have like actual stock tech
- 59:00level technology enterprises and stuff yeah and
- 59:03i'm talking i that's probably one of my favorite
- 59:05spider -man suits the kind of update to the iron
- 59:08spider where it looks like the red and blue but
- 59:10it is like more sleek and it has the glowing
- 59:12like big spider on the chest that's cool nice
- 59:16okay that's it alex ross designed oh alex ross
- 59:19dude that guy is just fucking crazy i think nick
- 59:23you and i've talked about like his pitches for
- 59:26like updated x -men suits and they're so good
- 59:29oh yeah i don't think they were ever used like
- 59:31no they weren't but i fucking love that cyclops
- 59:35that he did well it makes him look like uh more
- 59:38of the leader that he actually is like i i went
- 59:41off the movies and i was like oh he's kind of
- 59:43whiny and stuff that's kind of weird and then
- 59:44i've had people who know marvel better than me
- 59:46say yeah that's not the best representation he's
- 59:48literally the leader of the x -men yeah yeah
- 59:50he's just a tactician like super yeah um my favorite
- 59:56cyclops thing is just like he doesn't have plan
- 59:59a plan b because that limits you to 26 so all
- 1:00:04of his plans are always like plan three or something
- 1:00:06like that so it's always in numerals not right
- 1:00:11uh the alphabet i like that yeah hold on scott
- 1:00:14all right any final thoughts on this one i feel
- 1:00:16like we've we've covered it pretty well but Yeah,
- 1:00:19we gave Cyclops just about as much time as we
- 1:00:21gave Nicolas Cage today. Oh, yeah, Bill, did
- 1:00:23you have a quote that you wanted to do? I think
- 1:00:25I've done all my quotes except for one, and it
- 1:00:27was during the final battle. Nicolas Cage, I
- 1:00:30can't remember which one he was fighting, but
- 1:00:32he said, you hard -boiled turtle slapper. Laughed
- 1:00:37out loud, looked it up. It's like, because, I
- 1:00:39mean, they even said in the thing I found, it
- 1:00:41kind of went for the Humphrey Bogart thing, and
- 1:00:43so he grabbed some lines from, like, the 30s,
- 1:00:45and I'm like, dude. So good. That's fantastic.
- 1:00:48I think it's also in that same scene. It's right
- 1:00:51before that where he's just like, we don't pick
- 1:00:53the ballroom. What is it? We don't pick the ballroom.
- 1:00:55We just dance. Yeah. That's the thing. Like you
- 1:01:01said, Sean, he was in it for five minutes and
- 1:01:0340 seconds. He's still in a lot of ways. He's
- 1:01:05an impactful character. It's a really, really
- 1:01:08cool role for him. You know, if it is short.
- 1:01:11Of all the Spider -Mans, that is not Peter B.
- 1:01:14Parker. yes it's nicholas cage's spider noir
- 1:01:19and then maybe the next most memorable or talking
- 1:01:23about one spider ham yeah i think penny's the
- 1:01:26most forgettable oh i like penny but yeah i agree
- 1:01:29of that group still yeah yeah and gwen's gwen
- 1:01:33she's a favorite people love gwen um hard not
- 1:01:37to yeah killer costume cool story yeah yeah badass
- 1:01:41the dancing shoes too i thought that was a nice
- 1:01:43little spider gwen stacy spider uh spider woman
- 1:01:46has in my opinion the best venom suit oh yeah
- 1:01:52that one is really cool yeah so if you haven't
- 1:01:54seen it it's the black and white but because
- 1:01:56uh she has the hood the hood is the mouth the
- 1:01:59serrated teeth around it that's pretty badass
- 1:02:03And like inner heads in it. It's so good. That's
- 1:02:06wonderful. I think throughout this podcast, we've
- 1:02:09actually just delivered all of Nick Cage's lines
- 1:02:12for the whole film. We probably did, actually.
- 1:02:16All right. Well, shit. That's it. So this one
- 1:02:20is going to come out. And then after that, we're
- 1:02:22going right into Spider Noir. So this is kind
- 1:02:24of a perfect parlay into that. And we're going
- 1:02:27to do a weekly set of episodes for that. It's
- 1:02:30going to be two of the show episodes at a time.
- 1:02:33Sean will have watched in color and black and
- 1:02:35white so we can get some feedback on the stylistic
- 1:02:39aspects of that choice. And I'm looking forward
- 1:02:42to that. It'll be a little interesting. To figure
- 1:02:44out how we're going to talk about it in a spoilery,
- 1:02:46not spoilery way. Probably spoilery. I think
- 1:02:49it's spoilers. Spoilery. Just go watch the show
- 1:02:52and then listen to us talk about the show. Yeah.
- 1:02:54Yeah. Sorry for everybody who watches one episode
- 1:02:57a week. Yeah. Pussies. If you don't want it spoiled
- 1:03:01for you, you got to go get on MGM plus or whatever
- 1:03:04and watch it two days before us. There you go.
- 1:03:07That's the only way. All right. Thank you to
- 1:03:10our sparkle buddies, Josh, Josie, Matt, Adam,
- 1:03:13Bill. Hello. Stuart and Willow and our cage dancers,
- 1:03:17John Freeman, Nathan and Cameron. Really appreciate
- 1:03:20the support. If anyone wants to, you can support
- 1:03:22us on Patreon. We're on some of the social medias,
- 1:03:25but we're pretty lazy. And we are going to be
- 1:03:28doing a showing of Con Air in Seattle on June
- 1:03:3227th. So come watch that movie with us. It's
- 1:03:36going to be. Great. At the Beacon Theater. At
