- 0:37Coach Carlie: Hey friends, Coach Chris here.
- 0:39Coach Carlie: This episode is a little different because instead of me being the interviewer, I'm on the other side of the mic.
- 0:47Coach Carlie: And it was so fun.
- 0:50Coach Carlie: Dr.
- 0:50Coach Carlie: Sarah Gordon invited me onto her PhD Journey Unplugged podcast for a conversation that started with coaching and endurance sports, because that's how we originally met after all, but quickly became something much bigger.
- 1:04Coach Carlie: What are we actually training for?
- 1:07Coach Carlie: We talked about performance, longevity, finding joy in the process, and why your training needs to work for you and the life you want to live.
- 1:15Coach Carlie: I'm sharing our conversation with you, and when you're finished, be sure to head over to the PhD Journey Unplugged.
- 1:21Coach Carlie: It is an amazing podcast.
- 1:23Coach Carlie: She has really done a phenomenal job, and she has awesome guests, so you'll have to check them out.
- 1:29Coach Carlie: And then also listen to the episode that Sarah did on our show, episode number 155, The Science of Lasting Motivation.
- 1:39Coach Carlie: All right, here's my conversation with Dr.
- 1:42Coach Carlie: Sarah Gordon.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Hey everybody, welcome to the PHD Journey Unplug podcast.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: We are at episode 74 today.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And as you can see, I'm not by myself today.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I have a guest.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I have with me Chris Newport.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Welcome, Chris.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Hi.
- 2:00unknown: Chris.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Chris is the founder of the Endurance Edge.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And um we're gonna talk about what that means.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Um, and get to know you on the show today.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna focus on this question of what are we training for?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Training to flourish the journey of healthy aging.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna dive into what that all means.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Um I always find when I introduce my guests, you you know, you're very humble in the accomplishments that you've achieved in your life.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I yeah, I intentionally love to invite people on on the show who demonstrate just really living our best lives and helping other people achieve that as well.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: And so um, and that's why I've had you on the show today.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: So thank you for joining me.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, excited to be here.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, so Chris is located in North Carolina, and you're a registered dietitian nutritionist, exercise physiologist, endurance coach, certified sports nutritionist, and he spent more than 25 years helping athletes and active adults better understand the relationship between nutrition, recovery, performance, and long-term health.
- 3:29Coach Carlie: And I don't even remember how we originally connected, but I think you were I think you were emailing because you were um maybe you were looking for Iron Man female Iron Man athletes or something like that.
- 3:40Coach Carlie: I think it was maybe to the like the USA Traff on coaches.
- 3:43Coach Carlie: I remember it being somewhere in there.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, somewhere with my dissertation research.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Could have been and I'm just gonna say this right now because I was a little bit intimidated by you.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: A little bit because let me tell you why.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just launched my podcast, and and when you and a lot of people were responding, and when you responded, you know, at first I was thinking, oh, a coach, you know, endurance athlete yourself and performance coach.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: And then I started to kind of, you know, I always like to research my guests a bit, and I was like, wow, you have an established podcast, you have a successful established podcast.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: And I'm a newbie.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: And I thought, oh gosh.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And I think our first conversation, you you were telling me all kinds of stuff, and yeah, I think I think I overwhelmed you a little bit.
- 4:35Coach Carlie: Oh, you know, you know, to host on this thing.
- 4:37Coach Carlie: It did it, and you're like, oh my gosh, I think I think I'm like what it's about.
- 4:40Coach Carlie: But you know what?
- 4:41Coach Carlie: It's like the it's no different than if I were getting into iron, if I were getting into trathlon and you're like, oh yeah, I've done 13 irons, I would be like, oh my gosh, you're like my idol.
- 4:52Coach Carlie: I know, let me learn from you.
- 4:54Coach Carlie: But but bridging that gap, like it's totally possible, but it's so hard to um, it's so hard to like make that leap.
- 5:03Coach Carlie: You know, and sometimes it just takes little by little by little, and then suddenly you're you're kind of like there, and you're like, wait, I did, I did that, you know, and sort of looking back and enjoying the view a little bit, which you know, we kind of suck at.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Do you know I just said that in episode 73?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: I came back.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I came back from overseas.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I went to this conference over there, and I and everything's always it's been about achievement.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: It's been a ch about achievement for a very long time for me.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And I really came back and said, okay, how do you appreciate the view?
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Totally.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: So it's interesting you just said that.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: It's exactly the space I'm in right now.
- 5:48Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 5:49Coach Carlie: It's so uh and you know, as you were kind of saying some of those things, I'm like, oh, you're you know, so accomplished or whatever.
- 5:57Coach Carlie: And part of me, um I pushed hard for a long time, and then sometimes I had to be like, to what end?
- 6:07Coach Carlie: You know, like, do I need another certification to prove myself?
- 6:12Coach Carlie: And you know, we could go down many a rabbit hole as it relates to that, but like, what's wrong with just being a dietitian, or what's wrong with just being a coach, or what's you know, like we can own our space no matter what we are labeled as or what degrees we have, you can still you have you still have something to give.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: So you did not listen to episode 73.
- 6:38Coach Carlie: I clearly need to listen to episode 73.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: So I don't even know how this happens.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: It's like you just said exactly what I just said I learned.
- 6:50Coach Carlie: Okay, we're linking to episode 73 then for me.
- 6:56Coach Carlie: And that's not even really what we're gonna talk about today, but but it in a way I think it all relates it all relates, like of you know, my view on health is so different now than it was when I knew that I wanted to become a coach at age 15 or when I did my first triathlon at age oh 22, maybe.
- 7:18Coach Carlie: Um, you know, life that my headspace was very different.
- 7:23Coach Carlie: Life was very different.
- 7:24Coach Carlie: We, you know, obviously didn't have the advancements that we have in AI and some of these other technologies and whatnot, but um, I'm finding more and more that man, take your freaking foot off the gas pedal, like and just like roll the window down.
- 7:42Coach Carlie: And you know, you can still do hard things and you can still uh but you know, relishing it in a little bit.
- 7:50Coach Carlie: And I don't know whether that tends to be, and you would probably know more than I would, tends to be more of a female thing, especially in this sport or you know, certainly as a female entrepreneur.
- 8:03Coach Carlie: I have used for many years my name is Chris to my advantage, because via email, people don't know whether I'm a male or female.
- 8:11Coach Carlie: And oftentimes the assumption is I'm a male.
- 8:13Coach Carlie: Interesting.
- 8:14Coach Carlie: And then when they get me on the phone, they're like, oh, I didn't, you know, it's almost like, you know, my perception of you is now instantly changing because anyway, uh, all that to say is that um, you know, we're all in the right place at the right time, giving getting the right lessons.
- 8:34Coach Carlie: And it's nice to enjoy the view.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: That's amazing to start this way.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And as you if you know, when if as you're if you're listening, when you listen to this episode, you'll notice I was a bit nervous.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: And now I just feel like you just brought this like calming presence and authenticity to this conversation.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: So thank you for that.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: I want to ask you, um, and let me say I I think this cross is male, female, you know, however you identify, uh it's a human experience.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: I think um David Brooks wrote a really good book uh several years ago.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: I can't remember the exact name of it, but basically the concept is that there's these different mountains that you climb.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: We climb the achievement mountain, you know, the more degrees, more certifications, more this, more that.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: And then we do, we get to those summits and we realize like the view doesn't necessarily look the way we anticipated it to look.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And then we start to climb these different mountains that just have a little bit more depth, a little bit more meaning, a little bit more how do we give back to other people, how do we cultivate um communities that you know help each other thrive.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And um, it's just a it's a different way to live life, like you're saying.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: And that episode 73 was all about me coming back from Switzerland and watching people.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Now remember, I'm observing it as a tourist, basically.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: So who really knows the conditions of in people's stories of their lives?
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: But what I saw was a lot of people enjoying the day, not necessarily the weekend.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I was walking, you know, during the week too and reading a book and laughing and taking time out.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And it was really nice.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: It was really nice to see.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: And I I I think that as a performance coach and training, we all train like to train hard for for goals.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: This is an important conversation to have about how to also give yourself the grace of time to breathe and to reflect and to grow that way too.
- 10:39Coach Carlie: Yeah, definitely.
- 10:41Coach Carlie: And it's uh it's not easy to be looking at others and assuming that you're not good enough because they're doing more.
- 10:53Coach Carlie: But that's not always the case, you know, and um, you know, we'd get this, we get more glimpses with like social media, I feel like, but only like a part of the glimpse as to what is truly going on with them.
- 11:10Coach Carlie: Um, and then reflecting back on our own experiences of like, oh, I'm not doing enough, or I could just be better, or my least favorite is when somebody comes up, like in a race situation.
- 11:22Coach Carlie: Let's say somebody passes me and they're like, Oh, you know, the uh on your left, and they come by a great day, and you know, I'm not here to race, I'm just here to have fun.
- 11:34Coach Carlie: I'm like, you can keep your mouth shut now.
- 11:37Coach Carlie: You know, like it's almost like they give themselves this excuse to be like, Well, I'm I'm just not if I just in my head don't think that I'm trying hard, then maybe it's gonna be okay.
- 11:48Coach Carlie: But at the end of the day, we're all different.
- 11:52Coach Carlie: Yes, and that is really a space that I have truly um stepped into is helping people understand their fabulous uniqueness and what that means for their training, for their nutrition, for their recovery, and helping them get out of this, I'm not doing enough, or I'm not doing it right, to I'm doing it the way my body needs.
- 12:20Coach Carlie: And that's a very different story or mindset, however you want to spin that.
- 12:26Coach Carlie: So that's my space at the moment.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: I think that's fantastic.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: I think that we I always say we're more alike than we're different, but even in that statement, there's a lot of individuality that physiologically, you're an exercise physiologist, just physiologically.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: I just read something on social media this morning that says, you know, let's be honest, the people who are the champions in the world, they had some genetic predisposition to get there.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: They absolutely did, right?
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: They have some physiology that you know they were gifted to have.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: You know, it takes a lot of hard work and it takes a lot of other things, but you know, I think recognizing that um, you know, we all have that individuality and then capitalizing on that in different ways.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: So we're I love that we just jumped right into kind of like we're in like the same space.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's back up just a little bit.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: I want our audience to to know really who you are, right?
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: And how you you got here today.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: So let's start.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: You said at 15, you knew you wanted to be a coach.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: So what did that look like?
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Were you an athlete then?
- 13:33Coach Carlie: Oh, yeah.
- 13:34Coach Carlie: I was I was like, you know, my bless her heart, my poor sister who's four years older than I am.
- 13:40Coach Carlie: Remember, my dad was teaching her how to swing a bat, and uh she was probably eight, and you know, she was getting real frustrated.
- 13:48Coach Carlie: She's throwing the thing down, she's sitting on the card, like, ah, I can't do it.
- 13:51Coach Carlie: And I'm like, hand me the bat, let's go.
- 13:55Coach Carlie: So uh it was a great picture of me just, you know, standing there in my little goofy, you know, shorts and like, let's go.
- 14:02Coach Carlie: Um so I I and I, you know, also like skiing.
- 14:06Coach Carlie: They would, I mean, like the kid that like makes your heart skip a beat because you're like, oh my god, they're gonna die.
- 14:13Coach Carlie: That was you.
- 14:14Coach Carlie: That was me.
- 14:16Coach Carlie: Like, just like, you know, just like I'm not anymore.
- 14:21Coach Carlie: But um, I think just from the get-go, it was just like, let's hang from a tree, let's go down this mountain.
- 14:27Coach Carlie: Like, there wasn't uh as much fear, as certainly as there is now.
- 14:32Coach Carlie: But um, you know, I was just kind of willing to jump in and willing to do it, and very active and love sports.
- 14:39Coach Carlie: And by the time I got to high school, I had this coach who was um very stoic.
- 14:46Coach Carlie: She would just have this like straight face on all the time, and you it was so hard to read her, and she would always play favorites and she would always like just destroy her starters, like she would put her starters in, and then she would just leave them in, and nobody off the bench got to play.
- 15:04Coach Carlie: Um, and I remember being, so I guess 15 would have made me probably ninth or tenth grade.
- 15:09Coach Carlie: And I remember being like, put me in.
- 15:11Coach Carlie: Like, I just want to play.
- 15:13Coach Carlie: Like, let's let's go.
- 15:15Coach Carlie: And um, and that's when I had this sort of like aha moment of like everybody deserves to play.
- 15:21Coach Carlie: Everybody deserves.
- 15:24Coach Carlie: No, but the role model of not what not to be like, but certainly uh having that experience, I I wouldn't I wouldn't be here having not having that experience, you know.
- 15:36Coach Carlie: Uh you know, of like, okay, um, if I if in practice I just do a little bit better, maybe she'll play me.
- 15:42Coach Carlie: No, she wouldn't.
- 15:43Coach Carlie: Like it had nothing, you know, you just kind of like keep like, well, maybe if I do this, they'll see me more.
- 15:48Coach Carlie: And so having that experience young enough to be like, um, to just know that it it was it wasn't me.
- 15:58Coach Carlie: You know, it was the her being set in her ways and you know not being open to different um of different opportunities to to coach people in a different way or teaching to the the just giving people a chance.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Um can I interject one quick thought before we on that?
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: So self-determination theory has this continuum of like from a motivation to extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: So the goal is to move to more intrinsic motivation where we take autonomous actions in our life to move our life in the directions that is the most deeply fulfilling and meaningful.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: So here's an this is a great example.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And I'm calling this now.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: I've come home from my trip.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: I had this opportunity to learn from researchers and practitioners across the globe.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: I am now calling this my living laboratory.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, so good.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: What you just said is proof that here's this example that you're sitting there, you want to do this.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And something external to you is telling you you can't do it.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Or they're they're sorting that opportunity for you.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: They're shutting it down.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: And here you are sitting there in your mind thinking, but I want to do this.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: And that's where it started.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: And you took all these actions, and I'm I'm so excited to hear where it came, you know, where it went from that.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: You took all these actions to then put in life a path that is deeply fulfilling to you.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Because I know you love your work.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: I know where you're at now.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: And I yeah, I think that's such a beautiful example of what this whole theoretical framework about human flourishing, about thriving is all about is taking yourself out of these external situations and taking the actions to move your life forward to find purpose and meaning in your life.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: So, so I love that.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: So thank you for starting there.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, welcome.
- 18:06Coach Carlie: Yeah, let's move on.
- 18:08Coach Carlie: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:09Coach Carlie: I mean, that that just that I just knew that I I have a I can say this now without feeling like you know, egotistical or anything, but I have a gift of seeing something that people don't see in themselves.
- 18:24Coach Carlie: Okay, I love that.
- 18:26Coach Carlie: Trying to help them bridge the gap from part A to part B.
- 18:31Coach Carlie: And if they come even, if they come to me with even this iota of like, this is really scary, and I think I can, then I'm like, I know you can, and I'll I'll bring you there.
- 18:43Coach Carlie: Like if you trust the process and you trust yourself, trust yourself, then it can happen.
- 18:48Coach Carlie: So I think that that is what I learned through that 15-year-old brain.
- 18:53Coach Carlie: And then that turned into, you know, what do I want this to look like?
- 18:57Coach Carlie: So, you know, it was a it was a struggle going to to college because I was like, okay, well, maybe it's athletic training.
- 19:03Coach Carlie: So I started at Purdue University, and the great part about that program, great athletic training program, they literally put you in the training room from day one.
- 19:11Coach Carlie: And I was like, oh no, this isn't it.
- 19:15Coach Carlie: Okay.
- 19:16Coach Carlie: You know, I was like, I don't want to be taping people's ankles and you know, making ice bags and um and giving them ice baths and all that kind of stuff.
- 19:25Coach Carlie: I was like, hmm, maybe I want to uh become a physician.
- 19:29Coach Carlie: Um, you know, of course, then that's the get a good job, Christina.
- 19:33Coach Carlie: You gotta, you know, make good money, you know.
- 19:35Coach Carlie: So, like, you know, you have all those competing voices in your head.
- 19:38Coach Carlie: So that I thought maybe that's what I want to do.
- 19:41Coach Carlie: So I ended up transferring to the University of Virginia.
- 19:44Coach Carlie: And um luckily I got there and they had this great combination of a personal training program.
- 19:50Coach Carlie: So I was like, yes, fitness.
- 19:52Coach Carlie: I love fitness and you know, helping people um develop their bodies and minds in a different way.
- 20:00Coach Carlie: Um, in conjunction with, I was a peer health educator.
- 20:03Coach Carlie: So I was like, ooh, I also like teaching people about stuff.
- 20:06Coach Carlie: So that ended up becoming um, you know, turning into a job in the fitness industry and then eventually going back to school for nutrition.
- 20:17Coach Carlie: So that was a great way.
- 20:19Coach Carlie: Um, and nutrition exercise fit is kind of that that combo um of how can we put all the pieces together?
- 20:26Coach Carlie: Because fitness in its silo is uh it's just really hard to be in a silo.
- 20:31Coach Carlie: Like there's so many other pieces, you know, there's mental performance, there's nutrition, there's recovery, there's like so many other pieces.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Motivation.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: There's motivation.
- 20:39Coach Carlie: Yes, motivation for sure.
- 20:40Coach Carlie: Motivational.
- 20:42Coach Carlie: So putting it, and and you know, uh again, being the person who's like, I'll just get another certification.
- 20:48Coach Carlie: I'm like, no, at some point, you uh collaboration is one of our core or core values in the in the company.
- 20:55Coach Carlie: And uh at some point I figured out, like, oh, I can't do it all.
- 20:59Coach Carlie: I need other people to help me.
- 21:01Coach Carlie: Um, so that's kind of part of what we do as the company is sort of we're the team behind you of doing all these amazing things.
- 21:13Coach Carlie: And collaboration is key because um we are so many different brains can help somebody move forward so much more like like quantum leap than just you know, hey Google, how do I do a transition faster?
- 21:33Coach Carlie: Or, you know, like what should I eat to lower my cholesterol?
- 21:37Coach Carlie: Like, oh gosh, like both of those questions make my skin crawl.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Well, so when when so the name of your your business is the the um performance edge.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: The endurance edge.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Sorry, the endurance edge.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: When did that when did you find when did that when did you create that?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Come about?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, that was 2015.
- 22:02Coach Carlie: Okay.
- 22:03Coach Carlie: Um so and the tagline is you are edge to better performance and health.
- 22:08Coach Carlie: And that was uh me finally getting out of my living in a silo of being of doing my coaching on my own and doing nutrition on my own and being like, I need a team.
- 22:19Coach Carlie: I want to have other people who are smarter than I am and are more skilled in various areas that I'm not skilled in.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 22:29Coach Carlie: And um put all of our groups together.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: How many people are on your team?
- 22:34Coach Carlie: We have eight.
- 22:36Coach Carlie: Eight.
- 22:37Coach Carlie: Okay.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I hope I got that headcut right.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: And how many um individuals do you think you have trained over the years?
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Oh gosh.
- 22:52Coach Carlie: I mean, between we've we've had several groups come in.
- 22:56Coach Carlie: If you combine it with nutrition, I mean we're probably getting up into the I was just opening our sweat testing app.
- 23:03Coach Carlie: Like we've got 500 people there.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Um we, I mean, probably a thousand at least.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Thousands.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: So your reach is very wide, and it's and you've been involved for a long time.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to sh, you know, demonstrate to our audience that you you really know what you're talking about.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: No, thanks.
- 23:21Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 23:22Coach Carlie: I mean, you know, it's all it's all a process.
- 23:24Coach Carlie: I mean, sometimes you're like, oh, well, that was wrong, and I wish I did that differently.
- 23:28Coach Carlie: But like, for sure.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: So so the people that you've trained over the years, and I'll tell you where I'm kind of taking this, but I just want to ask you the questions to learn more about you.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: How many showed up uh trained and ready, and how many started as beginners, or you've seen it all, I bet.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Uh both.
- 23:49Coach Carlie: I mean, yeah, like um like today, uh, the guy who I had a swim lesson with, he is like, he, you know, I learned how to swim when I was like probably five, but you know, like I never laps swam until April.
- 24:07Coach Carlie: And so then I'm going, oh gosh, what's this gonna look like?
- 24:10Coach Carlie: And he's just one of those super fast learners um who has just great kinesthetic awareness and responds to feedback very easily.
- 24:20Coach Carlie: Now I've had people in similar situations, uh, it's always interesting where they come from, like how they get into it.
- 24:28Coach Carlie: Um, we've had people who are like, oh yeah, you know, I heard David Goggin's podcast and I'm gonna do Iron Man.
- 24:33Coach Carlie: Like, okay.
- 24:34Coach Carlie: Have you ever done a travel on?
- 24:36Coach Carlie: They're like, no.
- 24:37Coach Carlie: Like, okay, we're going, you're shooting for the stars, cool.
- 24:40Coach Carlie: And then they get in the pool and show up with like their kids' goggles and like, you know, a pair of just like lounge board shorts, and which is fine.
- 24:50Coach Carlie: Where would you want to wear?
- 24:52Coach Carlie: It's all good.
- 24:53Coach Carlie: Start where you got to start, but like made it halfway down the pool and stood up and was like, that's all I got.
- 24:59Coach Carlie: I was like, okay, we have a little bit to go for 2.4 miles.
- 25:04Coach Carlie: So um so yeah, but I I've seen quite a vast array of um, you know, gosh, we had one woman, I love her story.
- 25:16Coach Carlie: She came in and uh, I mean, we literally had on the had her on the edge of the pool, and all she did was just blow bubbles, come up, blow bubbles, come up, blow bubbles, come up.
- 25:25Coach Carlie: And, you know, we got her through a traffon, but that's how she started.
- 25:30Coach Carlie: So everyone comes from a different place.
- 25:34Coach Carlie: Um, some super new and some who have gone down the road a little bit, maybe they fail a little bit and they're like, I know I got more in the tank, then train me.
- 25:43Coach Carlie: So it's it's a really cool combination of a little bit of everything except pros.
- 25:48Coach Carlie: We don't work with pros.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: So so here's my question.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: With all of that, and just curious because I, you know, I'm all about um exercise motivation and obviously now self-determination theory.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: At what point when you train something and can you see it, it becomes their own?
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because you're the guide.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but ultimately, and I I always love to say like the coach can give you the whole the structure, yep, but the discipline and has to come from within, and then the desire and the purpose still has to come from within.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: So do you see that kind of transform in that process?
- 26:29Coach Carlie: Yes, and everybody is so unique.
- 26:32Coach Carlie: Um I saw that in a swimmer yesterday, and uh swimming is just fresh on my brain because we did we, it's so much easier to have you're like contained in the pool, you know, or even in the open water.
- 26:49Coach Carlie: Like it's just so much easier to have eyes on on someone versus like you know, if you go out for a ride, people just you know, they they scatter based on you know what how fast they're going, etc.
- 27:02Coach Carlie: Um but yeah, just watching people who are like, man, I remember when you started.
- 27:09Coach Carlie: And I oftentimes, even though if they're not coming in for a specific swim analysis, I will videotape them the very first time I see them because then I save that for three, four, six, twelve, eighteen months down the road when they're like, here I am doing uh half Iron Man or here I am uh swimming 1500 meters, and like they're they just transform, they're just different athletes, and they do eventually start to take it on themselves.
- 27:43Coach Carlie: And cool, right?
- 27:44Coach Carlie: Yeah, it's so cool, and that I mean that's why I do it for the goalies that you study.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean it's ultimately the goal.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: It's like it's like when you learn to ride a bike and somebody's holding on that bike, but eventually you're riding the bike, you know, as a kid, you're learning the confidence to do it on your own.
- 28:04Coach Carlie: And that's the cool part about coaching is that it's an evolution, it may be more teaching or guiding or instructional or skill-based at the front end, but then it transitions to something totally different.
- 28:21Coach Carlie: And I love that evolution of you know, from start through the whole process of what they what they accomplish next and where they go next and how your role changes.
- 28:39Coach Carlie: In fact, I just finished working with it's probably been maybe six or eight months with an athlete who, you know, it was like time for hey, they're just really struggling with particular injury that he couldn't quite getting over, get over.
- 28:52Coach Carlie: And when I could tell it was like time to break up, and I'm like, listen, you're we're not, we're not really, and we haven't, and we haven't really gotten anywhere in so long.
- 29:04Coach Carlie: We have to address this, and that does not mean you are hurting my feelings.
- 29:09Coach Carlie: That's just part of the that's part of the journey.
- 29:12Coach Carlie: Is that for now we separate and maybe we end up coming together again and maybe we don't, and that's okay, and I I think that's just such a great evolution of somebody's journey in their sport or sports and the and the coaching process and and how that brings us to like a next level.
- 29:37Coach Carlie: It's so cool.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: I think that's a really healthy perspective.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: You know, I've haven't really done a podcast episode on like like coaching per se.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: It's usually the perspectives of coaches to teach us and educate us on how to live our best lives.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: But as is my in my perception of of a good coach, and if you go back to your 15-year-old experience as a coach, I think you have a really beautiful perspective on coaching because it's like you you're not holding on to somebody for your own personal satisfaction, you're giving them the skill set to then go out and grow however they choose, and I think that's really great.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: And I've heard many times from people who have used triathlon and the triathlon experience, especially the Ironman experience.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: And most people don't get to an Iron Man without a coach.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: I've learned that too.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Most people have a coach to get them to the Iron Man because they they understand they understand it, they understand the science, and they're there to support you.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: But I've heard so many times how much it changes people.
- 30:46unknown: Yeah.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: It just changes their life completely.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:49Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 30:49Coach Carlie: That's cool.
- 30:51Coach Carlie: It's such a leap.
- 30:52Coach Carlie: And I mean I see it with nutrition too.
- 30:54Coach Carlie: You know, at the front end, it might be like, okay, well, we gotta work on this much protein, and we gotta work on uh, you know, changing this habit, we gotta do this, and then over time it turns into more um accountability.
- 31:08Coach Carlie: And sometimes, sometimes I had some clients, we don't even talk about food.
- 31:14Coach Carlie: You know, it's just it's just something about like, I just need to know that you're there, and um I just need to be reminded.
- 31:22Coach Carlie: Like, I have a client that I've had for probably three years now, and we met yesterday, and her mother just passed away.
- 31:27Coach Carlie: And uh that's a that's a lot, it's a lot to take on.
- 31:31Coach Carlie: And we just had to be reminded about like have you hydrated today?
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Right, something just simple.
- 31:38Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 31:39Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 31:39Coach Carlie: So um you sick.
- 31:41Coach Carlie: Yeah, it's you know, we and nutrition, we call it nutrition through the life cycle.
- 31:45Coach Carlie: I mean, it's no different than your nutrition's gonna be different if you're training for Iron Man versus if you're injured, or if you're menopausal, or if you, you know, like, and that's okay.
- 31:57Coach Carlie: It also doesn't have to be drastic and crazy.
- 32:00Coach Carlie: Like you can keep it simple, but sometimes you just need somebody to remind you, or somebody to be there, like, oh, right, right.
- 32:09Coach Carlie: I don't have to overcomplicate this.
- 32:11Coach Carlie: I don't need to trust what social media is saying.
- 32:13Coach Carlie: I mean, the things that I get from people of what social media says, I'm just it's like giant face palm.
- 32:19Coach Carlie: I'm like, ah, it's just so terrible.
- 32:23Coach Carlie: Some of the messages that we're getting.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: It's just all these scare tactics and I I listened to um I this will totally derail our conversation.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: So I just want to say this, but then open it as a consider as a door to maybe another conversation we can have.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: But the whole I listened to this physician talk about GLP ones and it was a fabulous conversation.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: And and it's kind of what you're saying, like for a lot of people, the GLP one is a tool, it's a bridge from very deconditioned body, poor nutrition to a healthier weight to then put in habits and behaviors that support that new the weight loss and that new kind of healthy way of living your life.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: So you so it's the bridge to get you there.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: And I'm not gonna say whether I I think that's the right approach or not, because there's lots of tools out there, whatever tool you need to get you there.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: But the key is, like you're saying, is once you get there, it's put in place and change the behaviors to l to live a healthy life, to thrive, you know, from many different angles, not just being thin, but you know, mental health, physical health, relationships in your lives, all that kind of stuff.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: So I think that's interesting that you mentioned about and giving yourself some grace because understanding that things happen.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, work happens, life happens.
- 33:53Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 33:54Coach Carlie: I mean, I did a somewhat recent episode just on GLP ones, but um the beauty of the profession that I'm in with nutrition, at least, is that we have the time.
- 34:07Coach Carlie: The physician does not have the time that we can really dig into the habits and like the nuances of what they're eating, when they're eating, um, what's their motivation, how that waxes and wanes in terms of you know, like hunger versus, you know, obviously you're not hungry after you eat, um, and various behavior changes.
- 34:34Coach Carlie: And I mean, there's there's solid research that shows that folks who are specifically on a GLP1, if they work with a dietitian, they overall have better outcomes.
- 34:43Coach Carlie: I mean, what do they do with their outcomes?
- 34:46Coach Carlie: They just overall better outcomes.
- 34:47Coach Carlie: Oh, okay.
- 34:48Coach Carlie: Like they're losing more weight, losing more weight, um, getting better, you know, better um numbers.
- 34:54Coach Carlie: And then once they come off of it, they're better able to maintain it.
- 35:00Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 35:01Coach Carlie: So um, I am not anti-GLP1.
- 35:03Coach Carlie: I know that this population tends to be very generally anti-medication, but um, you know, it's kind of like using fins when you're learning how to swim.
- 35:13Coach Carlie: Yeah, it's a tool.
- 35:14Coach Carlie: We could look at it as a tool.
- 35:16Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 35:16Coach Carlie: And I see uh, you know, it where we're offices located within an aquatic center and the team that's in there, I mean, they have so many swimmers.
- 35:25Coach Carlie: Um, and they're what they're either the first or second team in the nation.
- 35:29Coach Carlie: They use fins all the freaking time.
- 35:31Coach Carlie: So, you know, it's like the right tool for the right job at the right time.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: And I think that um, and I would love to have that another conversation about because it's interesting.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: I think you need anytime you're considering a tool, you need to think about um why you're using it, right?
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, if you're a uh ultra-endurance athlete trying to like shed a few pounds, like, you know, that might not be the best tool to use.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: But if you, you know, have diabetes and you know, you just you really feel like you can't get to even wanting to go to a gym or go to a pool to exercise, you know, maybe it is a good tool to use.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: So I think it's like and you've you've said this throughout our conversation, everything's very highly individualized.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: It's totally individualized.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: I think that's the key.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: It's just very individualized, whatever your guest journey you're on.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: So I love our conversation.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: We just literally just jumped in, but I I wanted to tell you that when I, you know, I was looking at your website and I always try to think about you know what can my guest bring a little bit different to the conversation beyond just talking about performance and nutrition.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And and I love that you have something that you created called the longevity lab.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: And that really piqued my interest.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, and I would love for you to share with our uh audience what is the longevity lab, what's the philosophy behind it, and let's talk about that a bit.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:06Coach Carlie: So we have really, really smart uh and driven clients, and they always want like, you know, the best and latest and greatest.
- 37:18Coach Carlie: And let me try this and let me do this, and um, you know, the latest supplement on the market, or are they tracking the right data trends?
- 37:26Coach Carlie: And let's track that number because I saw that number on social media or on Strava or whatever.
- 37:32Coach Carlie: Um, so I saw the longevity lab.
- 37:35Coach Carlie: It originally started as more of like a nutrition coaching program of like how much protein do we need and how much hydration, like some of those types of things, but it has since evolved because we have the resources for it.
- 37:47Coach Carlie: You know, we've got a metabolic testing facility and we've got sports psychology and we've got um access to biomarkers, and it's like, why not put all these pieces together to hone somebody's path in that's more specific to them that they're not managing in 10 different places of like, um, you know, I get my labs done at Whoop, or I and then I also do this other testing over here, and then I track my sleep here, and it's just such a great way to pull everything together, optimize specifically for the endurance or for the for the individual that also includes genetic testing as one of the tools, so that they specifically see what is necessary for them and their goals, and what are the things that they need to track so that they can sit back and enjoy life and not feel like I mean, I get so many people who are they get uh the direct to consumer labs and they're like, what does all this mean?
- 38:57Coach Carlie: This number's off.
- 38:58Coach Carlie: Like, am I gonna die?
- 38:59Coach Carlie: I'm like, first of all, yes.
- 39:01Coach Carlie: Secondly, okay, do you guys like we're all gonna die?
- 39:05Coach Carlie: We're all gonna die.
- 39:06Coach Carlie: Okay, like very soon, right?
- 39:09Coach Carlie: So let's take that off the table.
- 39:12Coach Carlie: Take that off the table.
- 39:14Coach Carlie: Usually that like pops their eyes out, they're like, wait, I am gonna die.
- 39:17Coach Carlie: Let's yes, news flash, you're gonna die.
- 39:22Coach Carlie: But my goal, and I know that it's part of their intention too, is like we love this sport or we love being active.
- 39:32Coach Carlie: I don't care whether it's doing draathlon until you're 95 years old, or running or swimming, or playing shuffleboard, or pickleball, or tennis, or walking, or whatever it is that keeps you active.
- 39:45Coach Carlie: We want to keep life in our years.
- 39:48Coach Carlie: So, why does all this have to be so complicated?
- 39:51Coach Carlie: You know, of like, well, I'm trying this new supplement and that new supplement, and you know, I keep my labs over here and I don't know, you know, this number's off, but like, should I care about it?
- 40:00Coach Carlie: And it's an opportunity to have a healthcare provider actually disseminate it down to information that's relevant to you so that you know what to execute on and can again just go enjoy life and all that good stuff is running in the background, and then we run things again and see okay, have things changed.
- 40:21Coach Carlie: So it's an opportunity to keep track to track trends without getting overly obsessed with only caring about the right things that we need to care about, and then go have some fun.
- 40:34Coach Carlie: Like it's all information that helps us know what is the best path for ourselves.
- 40:42Coach Carlie: Like, do you need to be recovering more?
- 40:44Coach Carlie: Do you need to be eating more cruciferous vegetables?
- 40:47Coach Carlie: Do you need to be taking extra vitamin D?
- 40:50Coach Carlie: So many of those things were just like, well, I take this thing because I heard it on social media, or I take this thing because I think I'm supposed to take it.
- 40:56Coach Carlie: And, you know, this other book says I should, you know, it's like, no, none of that.
- 41:00Coach Carlie: No, no, no, no, no.
- 41:02Coach Carlie: Let's filter it down so that you know what you need to do for yourself so that you can live a long and healthy life without overthinking it.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: I feel like everybody should have an access to the longevity lab.
- 41:16Coach Carlie: We've made it, uh, I I think we've made it very accessible and very affordable.
- 41:22Coach Carlie: Because I've seen some other programs that are like$25,000 a year.
- 41:25Coach Carlie: It's almost like concierge medicine on medicine on like steroids.
- 41:29Coach Carlie: And I just don't think we necessarily need someone, uh, something like that.
- 41:33Coach Carlie: No, no shame on them if that's the route you want to go.
- 41:36Coach Carlie: But um in my mind, nutritionists are the heroes of the healthcare world that we're cheaper and we're also um so much deeper into behaviors, so that if and when you go to the doctor, the doctor's like, yeah, you're good, have a nice day.
- 41:53Coach Carlie: You know, or oh, you broke your leg, we can fix that.
- 41:56Coach Carlie: Cool.
- 41:57Coach Carlie: You know, so the the model of medicine is more reactive and more um disease-based, and we can be more proactive using metabolic testing, using these very specific biomarkers, understanding your genetics such that you again, you can just sit back and do your thing.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: If it feels like the future, um it uh it's amazing.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Let me ask you right now, and I'll ask Vegan at the end, if somebody's interested in reaching out to you to find out more about just everything that you're about, the you know, your platform and the longevity lab, how do they do that?
- 42:37Coach Carlie: Yeah, I mean, the endurance edge is the best place to go.
- 42:41Coach Carlie: And that's where they can find out about our traffic coaching, our nutrition programs.
- 42:45Coach Carlie: And somebody might be like, okay, longevity lab sounds like kind of a lot.
- 42:49Coach Carlie: Um, the way that we have mitigated that process is we do a 30-minute quick start nutrition consult.
- 42:54Coach Carlie: I'm licensed in a ton of different states, so able to support people in uh, and I'm also very thorough.
- 43:01Coach Carlie: So they're like, you asked me a lot of questions.
- 43:03Coach Carlie: I'm like, I mean, you and I could sit together and I could ask you those questions, or you could answer them beforehand, pay me less and get right to the point.
- 43:13Coach Carlie: Um, and that's a that's a great like uh, you know, jumping point of okay, is longevity lab for me, or do I just need to like clean some stuff up over here um or get some tests, or you know, I get a lot of gut health stuff.
- 43:31Coach Carlie: I mean, there's a lot of different things that, and again, we we need our own unique path.
- 43:36Coach Carlie: Um, and then we have metabolic and sweat testing, and so uh lots of different avenues to work with us.
- 43:45Coach Carlie: Oh, and we put on a trathlon, you know.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I I was gonna ask you about that too, the trethlon.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, say that to them, but just real quick.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: Um, so it's the enduranceedge.com.
- 43:56Coach Carlie: Enduranceedge.com.
- 43:58Coach Carlie: And if they want to learn more about longevity specifically, it's enduranceedge.com forward slash longevity.
- 44:02Coach Carlie: So we keep it simple.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Chris Newport, just to say your name again.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: If you want to Google Chris Newport, endurance edge.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it should come up.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: Um ahead, let's just talk about this right now.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: And I hope I'm not.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: Are you you still good?
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, great.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: I have a week away.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Um tell us about the we talked about it before we started the to record this um race that you're the endurance edge and that you're you you hold every year.
- 44:34Coach Carlie: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:35Coach Carlie: Um yeah, I've just been all those things.
- 44:37Coach Carlie: Yeah, so saying all those things related to the endurance edge, I'm kind of like, you know, we we kind of have like five businesses in one.
- 44:42Coach Carlie: It's kind of interesting, but um, I wouldn't have it any other way.
- 44:46Coach Carlie: Um, in COVID, we had so many people who were training for Iron Man.
- 44:50Coach Carlie: They're like, I just can't, I can't, I can't keep this up.
- 44:53Coach Carlie: I don't want to keep this up, you know.
- 44:55Coach Carlie: So we decided that we were gonna put on an Iron Man race.
- 44:59Coach Carlie: And for like six or seven athletes, we had um a couple of them do the what what was our full, and a couple did halves, and a couple did uh a choose your own adventure.
- 45:10Coach Carlie: Like they did a 2.4 mile swim and then they did a 56 mile bike and then they did a 10K run.
- 45:15Coach Carlie: Um, you know, so uh and we had one of our guys who was in construction and he was like, Well, steel is stronger than iron, so why don't we just call ourselves humans of steel?
- 45:26Coach Carlie: I was like, that sounds great.
- 45:28Coach Carlie: And you know, we sort of joked around about that.
- 45:31Coach Carlie: And a couple of years later, we noticed that this time of the year is sort of a um a sparse time for races.
- 45:40Coach Carlie: I mean, obviously it's hot, but uh we decided that we were gonna make ourselves official, and so we got the name for Humans of Seal Racing, and to make it unique, because that's what we do, we have a reverse format.
- 45:57Coach Carlie: So it's run bike swim.
- 46:00Coach Carlie: That's awesome.
- 46:01Coach Carlie: Um partly to be different and partly because I think way more people should be doing aqua bike, you know, which is just swim swim, I shouldn't say just it is swim bike, which is still a big deal.
- 46:14Coach Carlie: Uh, but you know, they've had knee replacements, they've had hip replacements, they don't want to run, they can't run, whatever.
- 46:20Coach Carlie: Like, fine, you you should still be able to play.
- 46:24Coach Carlie: Right.
- 46:24Coach Carlie: So with aquabike, it's so anticlimactic that you swim and bike and then you just roll yourself right into transition and ain't nobody there with a medal, you know, you're just like, and I'm done, and that was it.
- 46:37Coach Carlie: Um, so this gives that population an opportunity to share in the glory of the finish line with everybody else.
- 46:46Coach Carlie: So albeit, you know, you're like dragging yourself up out of the water and like, get me to the end, but still somebody's standing there to put a put a medal on your neck.
- 46:57Coach Carlie: And uh it doesn't matter whether you did the sprint or the Olympic traflon or whether you did a sprint or Olympic Rocco Bag.
- 47:03Coach Carlie: We don't know the difference.
- 47:03Coach Carlie: We put a medal on you.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: So when when is that?
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: When do you do that?
- 47:08Coach Carlie: So we uh this year it is August 2nd.
- 47:11Coach Carlie: So we've historically we've historically done it.
- 47:14Coach Carlie: Um the first year I think we did end of August, and then I don't remember why we moved up to early August.
- 47:21Coach Carlie: Uh, but here we are.
- 47:22Coach Carlie: So it's hot, but uh it's a lot of fun and it's different.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: How do you sign up if somebody's listening and they want to do this race?
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: This year or something.
- 47:32Coach Carlie: Humans of steel racing.com and that should bring them to the humans of steel racing.com and that should bring them.
- 47:38Coach Carlie: It's in it's located in Harris Lake at Harris Lake County Park, which is just south of Raleigh.
- 47:44Coach Carlie: Okay.
- 47:45Coach Carlie: So pretty easy to get to, whether you're flying in or whether you're driving, and um, it's a fun little area to have a little excursion and then do a little fun reverse, weird, crazy race.
- 48:02Coach Carlie: And you know, we're USA Travon certified, so um you get points for it.
- 48:07Coach Carlie: That's cool.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know you've had the opportunity to um on your podcast to interview some really interesting, remarkable athletes and human beings.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: And I just wanted to say that um we both know Natalie Gribeau.
- 48:26SPEAKER_00: Is that his last name?
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: You had the opportunity to interview her.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: Not many people did.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: And I'm I mean, I don't know that many people, how many podcasts she did, but I mean you know, she's been in the media a lot.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: But um, here's somebody that last year at age 80 competed at Kona World Championship.
- 48:46Coach Carlie: Yeah, and at age 80.
- 48:48Coach Carlie: The world record for the yeah for the oldest, the oldest person to complete the world championship Iron Man Trath on.
- 48:57SPEAKER_00: Well, first, congratulations on you know having her on your show and giving her the opportunity.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: Um you're the perfect host to have, you know, given her that platform.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: And because I think you understand like you know, how people get to those moments in their lives.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: I'm curious though, like with the humans of steel and all the athletes that you've coached over the years and having the opportunity to interview Natalie, is there some kind of silver lining or some thread that you see across people across all the athletes?
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: Is it some is an enjoyment?
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Is it is it having fun?
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't want to lead you in that, but I mean like from beginners to then somebody like Natalie, like in your experience, because you have a lot of experience more than me.
- 49:47Coach Carlie: Yeah, I mean, she she didn't start until her 50s.
- 49:52Coach Carlie: It's incredible, it really is incredible.
- 49:55Coach Carlie: Um, I think those are some, I mean, no offense to uh all of the athletes out there who get into the sport, but I find that to be the most inspiring when people are like, you know what, I just hit menopause, let's do a triathlon.
- 50:09Coach Carlie: I'm like, we had a guy two years ago who was turning 70 and he was like, I want to do my first triathlon.
- 50:15Coach Carlie: We're like, okay, let's go.
- 50:18Coach Carlie: Um, so I think there is a degree of curiosity when people start, like, oh my gosh, this seems really scary.
- 50:32Coach Carlie: But I think I have it in me to do this hard thing.
- 50:37Coach Carlie: And then once they get into it, and then if they stay into it, it becomes more of a lifestyle.
- 50:43Coach Carlie: It becomes like training is just part of what I do, where I see it as the challenge is that training is what I'm supposed to do, where people get in trouble and then they want to quit.
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: That's an interesting distinction.
- 51:04Coach Carlie: Yes.
- 51:05Coach Carlie: So they want to train and they enjoy it.
- 51:08Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 51:09Coach Carlie: But when it becomes a job and when they become more isolated, because we we talk about that in our we've got accountability calls as part of our longevity lab.
- 51:20Coach Carlie: And um, we've had athletes who come on there and they're like, Oh, I just feel like training is, you know, I'm just on the trainer or I have I have this long run and my friends are going out for this shorter run.
- 51:30Coach Carlie: I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 51:32Coach Carlie: Like, you need to have a conversation with your coach of if I'm gonna stick with this and I want to stick with it, how can I have this beautiful combination of I'm doing this because I want to get better at it, but also I need the social aspect.
- 51:50Coach Carlie: I have to be with people.
- 51:53Coach Carlie: I can't I can't be isolated.
- 51:55Coach Carlie: And if you're isolated, if you're just like if all you're doing is training by swimming on your own and sitting in your quote unquote pain cave, which is like the worst name for a place to train in.
- 52:06Coach Carlie: Um then I just I find that they don't get joy out of it at all, and then they're more likely to stop.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: So you know, you're the perfect guest for me to have on the show coming back from my conference.
- 52:25Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 52:26Coach Carlie: Sort of is it giving you validation to all the things that you were?
- 52:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's like I couldn't have planned it.
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: Like we've never really talked before.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: We've had like one phone conversation that we've had, you know, just our lives have been kind of you know, missing each other here and there.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, let me tell you what you just said.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, yes, okay.
- 52:47SPEAKER_00: So and and and here's a little teaser.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be on Chris's podcast, and we're gonna dive more into self-determination theory.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 52:57SPEAKER_00: But I think in August I'm gonna, if we can make it work.
- 53:01unknown: Yeah.
- 53:01SPEAKER_00: What you just said, so base so self-determination theory says that we have three basic psychological needs that we all need to kind of flourish and to thrive: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: So what you just said about social isolation isolation, right?
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: When you're do working towards something and and you lose that sense of connection, and you you you know, you lose joy in it.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: And you're most likely not gonna stick with it long term.
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: So that sense of social connection is is important.
- 53:32SPEAKER_00: It's it's called relatedness.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: Relatedness.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: Relatedness.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: Competence is where you acquire the skills.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: You gave us so many examples of people getting into the pool, starting at the edge, blowing bubbles, doing half-iron, you know, taking them on that journey where they gain confidence and become much more internally regulated, intrinsically motivated.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: And feel joy in that process.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: And again, when you feel joy, the research research shows most likely more long-term adherence to what you're doing.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: We talked about somebody like Natalie at age 80.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, she still started at 50.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: That's still 30 years.
- 54:12Coach Carlie: That's a long time.
- 54:17Coach Carlie: Yeah.
- 54:17Coach Carlie: I mean, she was yeah, well into her 50s, I think, I think.
- 54:21Coach Carlie: So she, you know, she's just embarrassed that she couldn't swim.
- 54:25Coach Carlie: And then she was like, okay, maybe I need to figure this out, you know.
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: Well, and she experienced joy in that process.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and I want to come back to that uh with her one second.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: I just want to say the last one, autonomy.
- 54:39SPEAKER_00: And that's you, you discussed it in, you know, in terms of your journey to getting here.
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: So it's really, it's fascinating.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: I think I feel like this really is um putting understanding this in practice.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: And for our listeners to to to learn, to learn for yourself, because I don't know what there's no way Chris and I can know what you might be struggling with today.
- 55:01SPEAKER_00: Maybe there's a goal that you've been thinking about forever and you haven't taken the other step.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe you feel more your health is just not where you want it to be.
- 55:11SPEAKER_00: So that's the whole point of this conversation.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: We are health development leaders.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: We want you to live your best life from total out.
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: So that's really the point.
- 55:20unknown: Yeah.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: One more quick thing with Natalie, and I've shared this story with her and with you.
- 55:25SPEAKER_00: At Eagle Man, June 2024, I was standing next to her before we were getting ready to swim.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: And I knew I was kind of standing next to this amazing human being.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: And at the time I was trying to recruit for my dissertation research, and I was like, Sarah, this she fit the she fit the inclusion criteria perfectly.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: I knew she was in the water, she's a ter athlete.
- 55:49SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Sarah, this is not the right time.
- 55:51SPEAKER_00: Like, hey, you want to be in my research study?
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: Jumping into the water, right?
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:57SPEAKER_00: I I, you know, I tried for a long time to to connect with her.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: I just recently connect with her and had a wonderful email exchange.
- 56:05SPEAKER_00: And um, she's just a remarkable person.
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: So I wanted to give her shout out on this episode, you know.
- 56:11Coach Carlie: Yeah, definitely.
- 56:12Coach Carlie: I was so impressed by how like chill she is, you know.
- 56:19Coach Carlie: I I feel like so many people are intimidated by Trafon because it's such a hard-driving or has the potential to be such a hard-driving sport.
- 56:29Coach Carlie: Um, and uh she she was just like, yeah, I just get up every morning and I eat my bowl of Cheerios with blueberries on it.
- 56:38Coach Carlie: And that's because I like it.
- 56:40Coach Carlie: I was like, can I call Cheerios and get you on the box?
- 56:44Coach Carlie: I was like, you need to be like I just like I don't really take any vitamins, I don't, you know, whatever.
- 56:51Coach Carlie: Yeah, maybe some glucosamine and you know, just like and oh, I have these vegan friends who come over and it's just so annoying to cook.
- 57:03Coach Carlie: And that's not a dig on vegans if you are vegan, like of all honored for whatever path you go down nutrition-wise, but I just thought she just tickled me so so I mean she's comfortable.
- 57:15Coach Carlie: She loves it, she's just so uh committed to like I get up, I do my movement, I do my mobility, and I go on with my day.
- 57:23Coach Carlie: I take care of my husband, and then I get a good night's rest and I get up and do it all over again.
- 57:28Coach Carlie: Yeah, and she's just so committed to that and she enjoys it.
- 57:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a lot of lessons there for all of us to learn.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 57:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 57:37SPEAKER_00: This I feel like we could talk for, you know, we have so many um common interests, and but yeah, for the sake of our listeners.
- 57:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 57:48SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna leave you with this question that we talked about when we started.
- 57:51SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna let you have the final word on all of this, and then we can continue this conversation perhaps when I join you on your show.
- 58:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: Um, and then, you know, and if you want to continue to listen to Chris and I converse, yeah.
- 58:09SPEAKER_00: We'll carry it on on that episode.
- 58:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, you ready for it?
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm ready.
- 58:14SPEAKER_00: You know what it is, right?
- 58:15Coach Carlie: I I I hope so, but you know, I'm not I, you know, listen, I'm on let's go, let's go.
- 58:21Coach Carlie: Okay, I'm a flexible kind of guy.
- 58:23Coach Carlie: Let's go.
- 58:24Coach Carlie: Okay, Chris Newport.
- 58:25Coach Carlie: What are we training for?
- 58:28Coach Carlie: Oh, you have to answer that question for yourself.
- 58:32Coach Carlie: I think we really need to dig deep into uh, you know, you know, it's like me when I was 15.
- 58:40Coach Carlie: I knew that that was my calling.
- 58:43Coach Carlie: I knew that that was my purpose, and now being in it, it brings me so much joy.
- 58:50Coach Carlie: Like I just absolutely love it.
- 58:53Coach Carlie: And I think that um, I like to say, be the match.
- 58:59Coach Carlie: Like strike the match, you light the fire, and then put it to something, and it will just go wild.
- 59:05Coach Carlie: Like you can share your journey, you can share that process with so many different people that you just don't even have any idea who you're impacting.
- 59:19Coach Carlie: And I just, and we are such powerful uh entities in that respect, that if you whatever it is you're doing, if you are training for Trathlon or you're um you know, you're moming hard, or whatever it is that brings you joy and that has brought you here for that purpose, you know, charge on.
- 59:46Coach Carlie: Like that's it.
- 59:48Coach Carlie: Just live into it and uh and keep going because the waves that you are made, like the fires you are lighting under people, you just you just you just don't even know the impact, which is so cool.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: I guess I should have said, you know, literally and metaphorically, but yeah, answered it that way.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_00: So yes, that was great.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_00: Well, there you have it.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_00: Um so much wisdom.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: I I love to have guests on such as yourself.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_00: I go back and I listen to these episodes often.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_00: I do, and I encourage our audience to do the same.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: Um I guess for my final thought in terms of like wrapping this all up.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: I think you said it so beautifully right in the beginning, and we didn't even plan it.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: And I love when that kind of magic happens.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: Like sometimes the view like sometimes you have to spend a little time either on the top of the mountain or after you've climbed the mountain and just give yourself some time to reflect.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_00: Make sure you're doing these things because they are things that you enjoy, you're doing them for yourself, you're not doing them to please other people, yeah.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: And um, and have fun.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_00: Go out there and and live your best life.
- 1:01:09Coach Carlie: Yeah, and whether that's sometimes a coach or a friend or a family member who is that person to like tap you on the shoulder and be like, check the view out.
- 1:01:20Coach Carlie: Yeah, don't do it.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: We're so much stronger together.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: I know that's we are not my original statement.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: I you know, I get all the time on the RMM platform, but it is true.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: We're we are we are stronger together when we and you just said it, you know, when you like when you like that like match, yeah.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: Be the mat that energy, you know, you just don't know um how you're gonna impact others in the world.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, before we sign off, it's the enduranceedgeyep uh dot com.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: If you want the longevity lab, it's the endurance edge forward slash forward slash longevity.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, longevity.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: Are you on social media?
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_00: You'll find it once you head to our homepage, you'll find it in there.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_00: How about social media?
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_00: People want to follow you on social media.
- 1:02:03Coach Carlie: Yeah, social media at the endurance edge.
- 1:02:05Coach Carlie: And um, our podcast is called Find Your Edge.
- 1:02:09Coach Carlie: So um, which you should be able to hopefully you should be able to find it if you search for the endurance edge too.
- 1:02:16Coach Carlie: Um we're here.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_00: You have a very successful podcast.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: I've seen it on YouTube.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_00: Um, and you put out great content.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_00: And so it was an honor to have you on.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_00: And in a way, you're a mentor, so I appreciate that.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of course.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_00: Um listen, everybody, thank you for uh joining us and tuning in to the PHG Journey Unplugged podcast.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: And um, thank you, Chris Newport, for being here today.
- 1:02:43Coach Carlie: Yeah, thank you.
- 1:02:44Coach Carlie: Appreciate you.
- 1:02:45unknown: Bye.
