SPEAKER_01: Looks like the 80s and Drag Me to Hell from the Master of the 80s.

SPEAKER_01: Now, the granddaddy of all of them, The House of the Devil, inspired by you guessed it, the 80s.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_01: And here to discuss another master of the 80s.
• 1:59
SPEAKER_01: I have brought back expert Julianne.
• 2:04
  SPEAKER_04: Hello.
• 2:04
  SPEAKER_04: Hey.
• 2:05
  SPEAKER_04: Hey guys.
• 2:06
  SPEAKER_01: How's it going?
• 2:07
SPEAKER_04: I you know I'm happy because we're talking about one of my favorite movies ever.
• 2:11
SPEAKER_01: So how's it been laying in your grave waiting all month just to come back to discuss?
• 2:19
SPEAKER_04: You know, Parker's been putting putting me through the ringer with like things that like they're they're almost there, these movies.
• 2:26
  SPEAKER_04: Like we did.
• 2:28
SPEAKER_04: We did we did what was the first one?
• 2:30
SPEAKER_04: We did uh the hunt.
• 2:33
  SPEAKER_04: The hunt.
• 2:33
  SPEAKER_04: The hunt, yeah.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I totally forgot about that.
• 2:36
  SPEAKER_04: I know, I know, the hunt.
• 2:39
SPEAKER_04: We almost got it, but they're not quite there.
• 2:42
  SPEAKER_04: This one though.
• 2:43
  SPEAKER_01: Wait.
• 2:44
SPEAKER_01: Going back to the hunt real fast because you've just blown my mind.
• 2:48
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_01: Do you remember when that was the most controversial movie ever created, according to its marketing?
• 2:54
SPEAKER_04: And look how look how well that turned out.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, if you're the discourse still going, I'm sure.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's it's still in the ether because there's nothing else coming out.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_04: So I mean, it's still unfortunately it's talked about.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, well, and we tease every time that there is an episode that has been recorded on a certain A24 horror movie that we may not see the light of day this m this year.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_01: So we have been through a lot, Julianne.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_04: Arguably our our best episode yet, but you know.
• 3:28
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh everybody, you better believe it's a masterpiece.
• 3:32
SPEAKER_01: You'll just have to imagine.
• 3:34
  SPEAKER_04: We'll wake up.
• 3:35
  SPEAKER_04: Anyway, anyway.
• 3:36
  SPEAKER_01: Back to the facts.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_01: Here we are discussing the house of the devil.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_01: And personally, I've been very excited to discuss this movie because it's one that I feel like just came out of nowhere, blew everyone away, and it still slaps to this day.
• 3:53
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I, you know, like most people, I did not see this when it first came out because almost no one did.
• 4:00
SPEAKER_04: Um I it's a relatively recent discovery for me.
• 4:04
SPEAKER_04: I saw it within the last few years.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_04: I think I think I saw it on Shutter actually.
• 4:07
SPEAKER_04: Kept getting recommended to me, so I finally sat down and watched it.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_01: We're looking at- Wait, wait, wait, Julianne.
• 4:12
  SPEAKER_01: What?
• 4:13
SPEAKER_01: Stan of House of the Devil.
• 4:15
SPEAKER_01: I saw this film before you.
• 4:18
  SPEAKER_01: Did you?
• 4:19
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_01: I saw it at the very first VOD release.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_01: I remember it popped up, said new release, and I was like, ooh.
• 4:25
  SPEAKER_04: No way.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I don't remember seeing it until the last like three years, maybe three years ago.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_04: So yeah, it's it's it's relatively new for me.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, it uh I remember the first time I watched it, I loved the first like two-thirds of it.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_04: And then by the last, like the third climax at like the third, the third axe, I'm sorry, it kind of felt like jarring the way the pacing changed for me.
• 4:47
  SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_04: But we'll get into that though.
• 4:51
SPEAKER_04: But I actually it's grown on me though, so I love it.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_04: But yeah, it's a little bit of like at first.
• 4:56
SPEAKER_04: I was like, wait, it it went this way.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_04: I was kind of like, eh, didn't like it, and then I grown on me.
• 5:02
  SPEAKER_04: So it's my baby.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_04: I love this movie dearly.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_01: So well, we love a grower.
• 5:06
  SPEAKER_01: Um not a show.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_01: The House of the Devil came out into our hearts and lives in the year 2009.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah it was written, directed, and edited by Ty West.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_01: And if you're thinking 2009, that sounds familiar.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_01: Last week dragged me to hell, 2009.
• 5:25
  SPEAKER_01: I guess I just can't get off it.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_01: Ty West, you may recognize from this very podcast when we covered your next.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_01: He also wrote and directed.
• 5:35
SPEAKER_01: Did he write The Innkeepers?
• 5:37
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I didn't write that down.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_04: Yes, I believe he did.
• 5:39
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 5:40
  SPEAKER_01: Have you seen that?
• 5:41
  SPEAKER_04: I have it.
• 5:42
  SPEAKER_04: That one's really slow.
• 5:44
SPEAKER_01: Um see, I remember the the poster, and I always saw it and just thought, uh, because it's like some like wispy thing.
• 5:52
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_04: There's yeah, I definitely prefer this one.
• 5:55
SPEAKER_04: That one kind of made me like doze off a bit when I was watching it.
• 5:58
  SPEAKER_04: So yeah, but I s I still say it's worth a watch.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_04: I still say there's some creepy moments in it that's worth worth your time.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_01: So Ty West has also most recently been directing a slew of TV shows.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_01: He has directed episodes of Wayward Pines Chambers.
• 6:15
SPEAKER_01: Did you see Chambers on Netflix?
• 6:17
  SPEAKER_04: Chambers, no.
• 6:18
SPEAKER_01: It is interesting, but cancelled, so we will never know really what happens.
• 6:23
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I didn't hear amazing things about it, so I skipped it, but I liked it.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_01: I thought it was good.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_01: And Amazon's Tales from the Loop.
• 6:31
SPEAKER_04: I'm really, you know, I I don't understand how he got into TV.
• 6:35
  SPEAKER_04: I he I I just don't I don't I don't get it.
• 6:38
SPEAKER_01: He seems like he would be a very anti-TV person.
• 6:42
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he I I don't yeah, he's very he's a very elusive guy.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_04: We don't a lot of people don't really know much about him other than like what he spills in interviews, but he has no social media.
• 6:52
  SPEAKER_04: He doesn't, he's just not like, I don't know.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_04: He's kind of fallen into obscurity a bit.
• 6:57
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_01: As Lady Gaga would call him, an enigma.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_04: An enigma, yeah, an enigmatic.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_01: As I discovered at Lady Gaga's Las Vegas show, called Enigma, we are all our own enigma.
• 7:10
  SPEAKER_04: Guys, there you go.
• 7:11
SPEAKER_04: He had it in he got his Lady Gaga reference in for the evening.
• 7:17
SPEAKER_01: Well, Chromatica comes out this Friday, May 29th, so I'm excited.
• 7:22
SPEAKER_01: Ty West, a little infamous for his um work on as director of Cabin Fever to Spring Fever, which was released the month before House of the Devil.
• 7:36
SPEAKER_01: They came out one after the other.
• 7:38
SPEAKER_01: And uh a lot of drama because he has publicly disowned this movie as his work.
• 7:44
SPEAKER_01: And I think even Eli Roth was like, yeah, this is shit.
• 7:47
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't know a ton about that.
• 7:49
SPEAKER_04: I don't really remember that when that happened.
• 7:51
SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, he it's weird.
• 7:53
SPEAKER_04: Like Ty West just doesn't seem like the type to be into that to begin with, like to be interested in a project like that, don't think.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_04: Like, I just I don't know, it surprises me that he would even sign on.
• 8:01
SPEAKER_01: But from what I gathered from an interview I watched with him, it seemed as if he was like, I'm gonna take this movie, which honestly, the first one, Eli Roth, like why are you disowning the second one when the first one not that hot?
• 8:13
SPEAKER_01: And and they've already remade it.
• 8:15
SPEAKER_01: There was a remake in 2016, and this movie's from like what 2003 or something.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_04: It's not old at all.
• 8:20
SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm sorry, it's not new at all.
• 8:22
  SPEAKER_04: I mean, yeah.
• 8:23
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so uh maybe he was just like, Well, I'm gonna take this trash pile and turn it into something interesting, and then he claims that the studio turned it into something that he did not want it to be.
• 8:36
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 8:36
  SPEAKER_01: So drama.
• 8:38
  SPEAKER_04: You know what?
• 8:39
  SPEAKER_04: I respect that though.
• 8:40
  SPEAKER_04: He's he's definitely that type.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_04: So he he actually got his start with uh Larry Fessenden, who is the um owner of Glass Eyed Picks, legendary indie filmmaker.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_04: He gives tons of filmmakers and upcoming producers and editors their their first start in Brooklyn.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_01: But um, you really roasted me because we kind of glossed over Larry Fessenden in our your next episode.
• 9:02
SPEAKER_04: No, he just he's this this movie, especially, this is like a conglomerate of indie like horror actors, author.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_04: They're all kind of involved in this world.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_04: Um, and well, as we start getting into the actors list, we have uh Jocelyn Donahue plays Samantha.
• 9:22
SPEAKER_04: She was in Insidious Chapter 2 from 2013, I Trapped the Devil from last year, and Dr.
• 9:28
  SPEAKER_04: Sleep from last year.
• 9:29
  SPEAKER_04: She's she's been kind of busy.
• 9:31
SPEAKER_01: And a very minor character in Dr.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_01: Sleep, but a very beautiful moment from her.
• 9:36
  SPEAKER_01: Did you see Dr.
• 9:36
  SPEAKER_01: Sleep?
• 9:37
  SPEAKER_04: I did, I did, yeah, yeah.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_04: She's she just kind of elevates anything, I think.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I didn't realize she is Abra's mother, and there's a scene where she has like a really good breakdown in that movie.
• 9:48
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, she's great.
• 9:50
SPEAKER_04: Um, and I especially love her in this.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_04: Uh we have a pre-Ladyburg, Greta Gerwick as Megan.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_04: And obviously, as you mentioned, she's become a mainstream household name since her success as the writer director of Ladybird, the Oscar-winning Ladyburg, right?
• 10:06
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 10:06
SPEAKER_04: And uh Little Women last year, which did not win.
• 10:11
SPEAKER_04: Did that win anything except for uh it won costume?
• 10:14
  SPEAKER_04: I think, right?
• 10:15
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 10:16
SPEAKER_01: Um it also did not win my heart because I did not love it.
• 10:19
  SPEAKER_04: I didn't see it, I haven't seen it yet.
• 10:21
SPEAKER_01: But uh uh you know, forget that.
• 10:24
  SPEAKER_01: Go see it.
• 10:24
SPEAKER_01: It's good enough to watch.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_01: Um, but actually, I'm checking.
• 10:27
SPEAKER_01: I don't think she won the Oscar for Lady Bird.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean she did because it won.
• 10:32
  SPEAKER_01: Wait, let me see.
• 10:33
  SPEAKER_04: Did she win best?
• 10:34
  SPEAKER_04: Wasn't it screenplay?
• 10:35
  SPEAKER_04: I thought.
• 10:37
SPEAKER_04: And she wrote it, right?
• 10:39
SPEAKER_01: Lady Bird was nominated for five Oscars and won zero.
• 10:44
  SPEAKER_04: Oh, really?
• 10:44
SPEAKER_04: I could have sworn she drama.
• 10:47
SPEAKER_01: Hey, um, Academy, I heard you hate women, and I am seeing the facts right now.
• 10:52
SPEAKER_04: I could have sworn that she that that movie won for best screenplay.
• 10:56
  SPEAKER_04: I guess I'm making it up.
• 10:57
  SPEAKER_04: Never mind.
• 10:57
  SPEAKER_01: IMDB begs to differ.
• 10:59
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 11:01
SPEAKER_04: And as you mentioned, she was a prominent actor writer before that, including modern dance movie.
• 11:06
  SPEAKER_04: Frances.
• 11:07
SPEAKER_01: Frances, you haven't seen Frances Ha?
• 11:09
SPEAKER_04: I've not seen Frances Ha.
• 11:11
SPEAKER_01: Well, it is a great modern dance movie, and coming from a modern dancer, it's very fun.
• 11:16
SPEAKER_04: You would be an expert, yeah.
• 11:19
SPEAKER_01: So slow down out there.
• 11:21
SPEAKER_04: And then you made a note here.
• 11:23
SPEAKER_04: But am I wrong in thinking that she was a bit more niche before recent achievements?
• 11:26
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she totally was, for sure.
• 11:28
  SPEAKER_04: Tom Noonan as Mr.
• 11:30
  SPEAKER_04: Ullman.
• 11:30
SPEAKER_04: The god, he's so creepy in this.
• 11:32
SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was in Manhunter from 1986 and the Monster Squad from 87, which I still haven't seen.
• 11:38
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I have not either.
• 11:40
SPEAKER_01: Have you heard Good Dang?
• 11:41
SPEAKER_04: It's uh yeah, people love it.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_04: It's just not something I grew up with, so I never I just never saw it.
• 11:45
SPEAKER_04: But yeah, people love that movie.
• 11:46
SPEAKER_04: Um, we have the iconic Miss Mary Warnove as Mrs.
• 11:50
SPEAKER_04: Allman, she was a 60s Warhol superstar before becoming a horror screen queen, basically.
• 11:56
SPEAKER_04: Knight of the Comet from '84 and Chopping Mall from '86, which she looks amazing in.
• 12:01
SPEAKER_04: And then, of course, uh, we have an appearance by the Queen, the genre queen, D Wallace.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_04: She plays the landlady, kind of brief, but she's she's there.
• 12:11
SPEAKER_04: And uh, your next star, AJ Bowen, is Victor Allman.
• 12:15
SPEAKER_04: And uh he's this is probably one of his best performances as well.
• 12:19
  SPEAKER_04: Good stuff.
• 12:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, as we discuss, kind of a big crossroads for a bunch of talent.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I agree with you because You're next is a great movie, but the performances, you know.
• 12:34
SPEAKER_04: It's a little campy, I think, that you know what I mean?
• 12:36
  SPEAKER_04: It's a little bit like Yeah.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this was his his serious movie, or his uh his dramatic chainsaw award if he if there was for sure.
• 12:46
  SPEAKER_04: There was actor.
• 12:48
SPEAKER_04: Well, there was actor, the Fangoria Chainsaw Award.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_01: So now, if you're wondering what is the House of the Devil about, well, first of all, I'd tell you get off this podcast, go watch the movie, and then come back.
• 12:59
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, goddamn.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_01: But uh, I'll just give you a quick refresher.
• 13:02
SPEAKER_01: IMDB claims that in 1983, financially struggling college student Samantha Hughes takes a strange babysitting job that coincides with a full lunar eclipse.
• 13:15
SPEAKER_01: She slowly realizes her clients harbor a terrifying secret, putting her life in mortal danger.
• 13:23
  SPEAKER_01: Mortal danger.
• 13:24
  SPEAKER_01: What a weird phrase.
• 13:25
SPEAKER_04: You know, and I don't like that wording because, like, as maybe we'll talk about hopefully, this movie's even though I don't think Ty West was deliberately commenting on it, but if you're analyzing it, I would say, like, this is a commentary on like 80s kind of like women were like kind of like trying to be independent and being like, no, don't do that.
• 13:42
SPEAKER_04: Like, no girl, you you can't have your own apartment, you can't have your own job, you can't have your own money, or else you'll get punished for it.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_04: You think shit could happen to you, and look what happens to her.
• 13:51
SPEAKER_04: And so it's like it's kind of that's a weird way of putting it when it's like it's not her fault that this happened to her.
• 13:56
SPEAKER_04: This is this is not like it's it's a weird wording.
• 13:59
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I agree.
• 14:00
  SPEAKER_04: I don't like that.
• 14:01
SPEAKER_01: And also, I was thinking if you look past those themes and you think just just what happens in the movie, would it be the opposite of mortal danger that she's in?
• 14:10
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, it's Rotten Tomatoes that that that's not this ain't it.
• 14:14
  SPEAKER_01: IMDB.
• 14:15
SPEAKER_04: Oh, I and DB, I'm sorry, yeah.
• 14:17
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can shit on Rotten Tomatoes right now because actually they're fans too.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_01: Critics score 87%, audience score slightly lower, 63%.
• 14:29
  SPEAKER_04: Too low.
• 14:31
  SPEAKER_01: I agreed.
• 14:32
SPEAKER_01: And then critics consensus says though its underlying themes are familiar, which I might say intentional, yeah, House of the Devil effectively sheds the loud and gory cliches of contemporary horror to deliver a tense, slowly building throwback to the fright flicks of decades past.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nothing else to say about that.
• 14:56
SPEAKER_01: Now you said that you came to the House of the Devil in just the past couple of years, correct?
• 15:05
  SPEAKER_04: Past few years, yeah.
• 15:06
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_01: So as a uh, you know, imagine that you've just watched it for the very first time.
• 15:12
SPEAKER_01: What would you think is your first overall general big picture reaction to the House of the Devil?
• 15:19
SPEAKER_04: Well, like I alluded to earlier, like I loved the first two-thirds of this movie.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_04: I thought it was not gonna say scary, but I thought it was genuinely unnerving.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_04: I love suspenseful, Hitchcock-y, and kind of dread-inducing horror.
• 15:33
SPEAKER_04: That's kind of my favorite kind.
• 15:34
SPEAKER_04: So I love this movie.
• 15:36
SPEAKER_04: And then, as I said, like the third act kind of takes a turn into like and not not in unexpectedly plot-wise, but pacing-wise.
• 15:45
SPEAKER_04: It's weird how it kind of just like jolts into like as soon as she as soon as you see her waking up and she's tied up, you're like, whoa.
• 15:53
SPEAKER_04: And it's just the the lights are flashing and everything's just like coming at you like full force.
• 15:57
SPEAKER_04: That felt a little bit like it was too much to handle because we it took so long to get there.
• 16:01
SPEAKER_04: But again, I mean, subsequent viewings, which you should always give movies more than one viewing, especially when you're like, you know, okay, that was good, but maybe not great.
• 16:11
  SPEAKER_04: And now I I love it.
• 16:12
SPEAKER_04: It's like second, third, fourth.
• 16:13
SPEAKER_04: I've seen it like six or seven times at this point, and I love it.
• 16:16
SPEAKER_04: But but yeah, it's a little bit, it was a little bit weird how it kind of veers to and and I I guess I was a little disappointed too, because it kind of at first I was like, oh, so it really is like a satanic cult.
• 16:28
SPEAKER_04: I was kind of hoping it'd be like a twist, I guess.
• 16:30
  SPEAKER_04: But I think that's the point.
• 16:31
SPEAKER_04: He was trying to make the point of like this is a very bare bones commentary on like, see, the Reagan administration was right, there are satanic cults out there gonna kill you, you know.
• 16:40
SPEAKER_04: And I think that's that was the point.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_04: I just didn't get that at that moment when I saw it.
• 16:44
SPEAKER_04: So I know better now.
• 16:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think similarly to you.
• 16:48
SPEAKER_01: I when I watched this last night, I was sucked into the first two-thirds of this movie.
• 16:56
SPEAKER_01: And actually, I leading up to this was like, oh, I remember it's a little bit of a slow one, so I'm just going to prepare myself.
• 17:03
SPEAKER_01: And then as I was watching it, I was like, Yes, this is like, I would describe this as slow, but that doesn't mean it's not like completely intoxicating.
• 17:11
  SPEAKER_01: Like I was like, what's happening?
• 17:14
SPEAKER_01: And then similarly, but also not similarly, to you on that finale.
• 17:20
SPEAKER_01: I think the difference for me is that yes, something needed to happen.
• 17:26
SPEAKER_01: Like this whole movie was building to something.
• 17:29
SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, I think my issue is that the finale does not have the same intention.
• 17:38
SPEAKER_01: Not intention, what's the word I'm looking for?
• 17:41
SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have the same care given to it.
• 17:44
SPEAKER_01: It just everything happens so fast, and she just like stab, stab, stab out of there, and then it ends.
• 17:51
  SPEAKER_04: It it's it's jumbled, I would say.
• 17:53
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I totally agree with you.
• 17:54
SPEAKER_04: It feels very like jarring.
• 17:55
SPEAKER_04: You're like, oh wait, like it just like smacks you in the face, and then it's then it's done.
• 17:58
  SPEAKER_04: And it's you're like, oh, okay.
• 18:00
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, so I mean this movie is a typical what hour and 40 minutes, yeah, and uh it takes you know like a good solid, like I don't know, 40 for stuff to start happening, and then another or 30, and then like another like 40 to uh get to the finale, and then the finale is like 10-15 minutes.
• 18:19
SPEAKER_01: Don't add up that math because I do not do math.
• 18:23
SPEAKER_01: To me, sacrifice or having sacrificing the end result to have that lengthy middle, like you don't have to choose.
• 18:32
SPEAKER_01: Like you can kind of get the best of both worlds if you're willing to give that finale just as much attention as the middle parts.
• 18:40
SPEAKER_01: Because I think exactly the opposite of what I expected, I kind of turned off when that finale happened and I was like, all right, like go kill everyone, whatever you're gonna do.
• 18:48
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
• 18:50
SPEAKER_04: I will say though, I do appreciate and I I've appreciated it more as the subsequent viewings I've seen of it.
• 18:55
SPEAKER_04: I do like how kind of this movie's kind of mean.
• 18:58
SPEAKER_04: This movie's honest to people who are good people, and and that's that's that's not always the case in American films, especially.
• 19:07
SPEAKER_04: It's always like, oh well, we don't want to do that, we don't want to kill off this person.
• 19:10
SPEAKER_04: It's like, no, this movie, like, I mean, not to get ahead of ourselves, but Samantha puts a gun to her head, you know, by the end, you know, and you're like, oh, okay, that's cool, you know, fuck.
• 19:21
SPEAKER_04: Like, but yeah, so I I give it, I give it credit for that because that in that way it's kind of an unexpecting.
• 19:26
SPEAKER_01: So um and it adds so much to the realism of the movie because sometimes, as I even discussed last week on Drag Me to Hell, it's kind of exhausting to watch people so consistently in movies like be so selfless, just because that's not how life works.
• 19:41
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 19:42
SPEAKER_01: Not saying that I don't support kindness, it's just refreshing to see something that it's like, oh, like I could believe that that's how this would have played out because not all the time can you just expect untethered mercy.
• 19:55
SPEAKER_01: What a strange phrase I just said.
• 19:56
  SPEAKER_04: Right, yeah.
• 19:58
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 19:58
SPEAKER_04: Um, and also like I think for first impressions too, I just I love I've told you before, I love 70s horror.
• 20:05
SPEAKER_04: And this movie is just, I mean, as Ty West, you know, purposely and deliberately makes it, it's a love letter to like 70s, early 80s horror.
• 20:13
SPEAKER_04: The movie takes place in the 80s, but it's in like early 80s, but like it's such a the slow zooms in, the dollies, the way, the way that the camera moves, like that, the wide shots, like people don't do that a lot nowadays.
• 20:27
SPEAKER_04: Like, I mean, sometimes, but it I just I love the aesthetic of it.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_04: I love the feel of it.
• 20:31
SPEAKER_04: And it it's so it was so ahead of its time because like 80s nostalgia wasn't that popular, popularized back then in 2009.
• 20:39
SPEAKER_04: Now, of course, it's like it chap it, Stranger Things, um, summer of 84.
• 20:44
SPEAKER_04: It's like there's we've got so much stuff, and that one, that kind of stuff feels a little bit more campy and more like kind of poking fun a bit at 80s nostalgia and pop culture.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_04: This is such a this is not cheesy at all.
• 20:54
SPEAKER_04: It's very like um, what's the word I want to say?
• 20:59
SPEAKER_04: It's like it's like a it's like a love letter to 80s pop culture, and it what doesn't feel like it's making fun of it or parody of it, you know what I mean?
• 21:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and actually you're talking to a bit of a Stranger Things stan right here because I love Stranger Things, I think it's so fun.
• 21:15
SPEAKER_01: But I think what is great about this movie that's different than, like you said, the wave of 80s nostalgia that we're getting right now is that everything is about the 80s, but without the kind of um like texture and charm of an actual 80s movie.
• 21:31
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 21:32
SPEAKER_01: And instead of trying to show us the 80s, it seems like the House of the Devil just like becomes the 80s, it emulates the 80s.
• 21:41
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 21:42
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 21:42
SPEAKER_01: And I think the first time I even saw this, I told you that I watched it.
• 21:45
SPEAKER_01: I think like this came out uh around Halloween 2009.
• 21:50
  SPEAKER_01: And I think I watched it early 2010.
• 21:53
SPEAKER_01: I remember thinking, huh, I rented this off of the new releases list, but maybe they got it wrong because this.
• 22:00
SPEAKER_01: Must be a lot older than that.
• 22:03
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he oh he nail he nails it.
• 22:05
SPEAKER_04: I mean it just it feels and you know of course as the movie goes on you see influences from Psycho, Rosemary's Baby.
• 22:12
SPEAKER_04: I mean these movies like are and not to mention we forgot to even mention the beginning the first few minutes are right out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre with based on true events you know to kind of scare you and get under your skin.
• 22:23
SPEAKER_04: That's right off of that.
• 22:24
SPEAKER_04: Like I I just I love that you know Ty West he does his homework and I I appreciate filmmakers who do their homework and this is how horror to me like should feel a lot of times.
• 22:34
SPEAKER_04: Yeah and looking at that very first moment actually you know what I took a picture of it actually because I wanted to remember it.
• 22:40
  SPEAKER_01: Well that's great.
• 22:40
SPEAKER_01: Read it off because that's gonna pull up shatter.
• 22:43
  SPEAKER_04: Okay.
• 22:43
SPEAKER_04: During the 1980s over 70% of American adults believed in the existence of abusive satanic cults.
• 22:49
SPEAKER_04: Dot dot dot another 30% rationalize the lack of evidence due to government cover-ups.
• 22:56
SPEAKER_04: So there's a there's a lot saying there without saying a lot if that makes sense.
• 23:01
SPEAKER_01: Yeah and it's interesting because after that does it says the following is based on true unexplained events.
• 23:07
SPEAKER_04: That's what it was something different.
• 23:09
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah okay.
• 23:11
SPEAKER_01: Now what I think is really interesting about that is you mentioned Texas Chainsaw Massacre where at the beginning is this deep booming voice that's like in the summer of 1974 Sally Hardesty and her friends went on a trip to the Texas whatever and then at the bottom it says based on true events.
• 23:30
SPEAKER_01: Now that was a big deal at the time because even though that movie is not based on true events it's kind of jumble a mashup of a bunch of the best parts of some true events and a lot of not true events that was kind of a selling point of the movie and a selling point of the movie that has been used over and over in movies like The Strangers.
• 23:48
SPEAKER_01: And what I love about this intro is that it uses that like we said a nice little homage but at the same time it seems a little bit more spooky because the facts that it's giving us beforehand not only set up the movie thematically but are grounded in what am I trying to say like not like physical event fact but a kind of more frightening statistic of how people behave.
• 24:15
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 24:16
SPEAKER_01: And I think that that's really interesting and creative and a nice little spin on what you might expect.
• 24:22
  SPEAKER_04: Sure.
• 24:23
SPEAKER_04: And I think this movie like one of its greatest selling points I think like unlike Texas Chainsaw Massacre we feel like we're actually watching a camcorder of like this event actually happening before our eyes with this one this feel this is very voyeuristic in a term of like we feel like we're not in the movie like Texas Chainsaw like I feel like I'm like in the movie when I'm watching that this one I feel like I'm like I'm just kind of outside the house peeking in watching Samantha and that voyeurism of you know what I mean it's like it feels kind of like it's a little bit different where it's like we're like oh god and like you're worried for her because you're like what's gonna happen and I like her and I'm scared for her but I'm not quite in the house with her.
• 24:59
SPEAKER_04: I don't feel like I'm ever in the house with her.
• 25:01
SPEAKER_04: I'm just watching from outside.
• 25:04
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah we're a little more omniscient.
• 25:05
SPEAKER_01: You know there's like so many scenes of like her looking through a window and there's these beautiful fun 70s zoom shots that nobody does anymore that like they should because how fun.
• 25:15
SPEAKER_01: I'm here for more style and a little less realism.
• 25:18
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 25:18
SPEAKER_01: And then there are also so many scenes or shots where she's like framed in a doorway or surrounded by shadow where Hush which we covered on our Patreon if you want to hear us talk about that patreon.com slash scary movie pod.
• 25:32
SPEAKER_01: Hush is such a dark movie that I had I don't have curtains in my living room and I got thumbtacks and I pinned blankets over my windows because I could not fucking see that movie.
• 25:44
SPEAKER_01: And this movie's a little bit different where it's not that you can't see the movie because of just it being a dark movie.
• 25:51
SPEAKER_01: There's so much of the screen that is being hidden from us that kind of builds this dread and suspense that is really like I said I was glued during the parts that are the air quotes slow parts of the movie.
• 26:04
SPEAKER_04: Yeah this movie so Ty West I don't forget if we mentioned it before but he he shot this in 16 millimeter and I saw yeah he did yeah and he uh I went to I went to a screening I was telling you earlier I went to a screening for its 10th anniversary on the evening last year and Ty West was supposed to be there but he didn't show up so I don't know what happened with that but they they west are you listening um oh yeah he's a big fan yeah they screened it I believe in 30 millimeter and it that was made a little bit better in a big screen because obviously I didn't see this in a big screen and neither did you I would love to see this in Blu-ray.
• 26:40
SPEAKER_04: I don't own it in Blu-ray and I would love to watch it because it's a little more clear it just feels a little bit like there's it's so again deliberately hard to say but I'm like oh I feel like I missed something but it's not you're just it's just building tension it's just building a atmosphere so but yeah they have clear versions of this well I mean it is on Blu-ray so it's it's gonna be a crisper viewing well I hope I hope not too crisp because it's kind of like when they remastered Buffy the vampire slayer yeah it was a mess because all of a sudden all this stuff that you weren't supposed to see you could and then if you watch the remaster versions like why is there just like a microphone in this scene?
• 27:17
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah that's a good point.
• 27:18
SPEAKER_04: Yeah maybe it maybe it loses something when it you see it that that clearly this a movie like this.
• 27:22
SPEAKER_01: So yeah maybe maybe I love how spooky it is yeah no you're right you're right you're right great intro thing great opening credits very ooh 70s and then like we said D Wallace yada yada I don't care that much about this first part she gets a babysitting job cool we do meet Greta Gerwig and I was telling you earlier not once but twice this movie disrespects pizza.
• 27:47
SPEAKER_04: Yeah so we can't give me the facts I yeah we can't figure it out so I I mean it's kind of alluded to in the second part of the movie like that that she they mess with the pizza that's why she passes out because she ate the pizza and they fuck with it.
• 28:00
SPEAKER_01: But the first time they they disrespect pizza we don't know what was I mean maybe that was just it getting into her head like she was like oh apparently she's a germophobe I mean no but wasn't that Megan who complained about the pizza though so it wasn't even Megan Meg Megan Megan complained about the pizza and then she was like you won't even eat yours because you're such a germophobe and then later I guess we see her putting toilet paper on the seat of the toilet but who doesn't do that when you're at a weird toilet that's just being normal Megan but maybe that was just Megan getting in her head so then later when she was like this pizza does taste weird but I mean I don't believe it because pizza rules yeah could just be a a plot kind of like hey see hint hint say what happens next that pizza looked good and we also learned from this from the beginning that in their in their conversation at the pizza parlor that Samantha doesn't like children.
• 28:57
SPEAKER_04: That comes that's important right relatable can relate and that can play later and you're like oh that's just like a throwaway line but it's not it comes back a bite her in the ass later.
• 29:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah and something that's great about this that you alluded to earlier is that this is takes place in the 80s when there are very specific like cultural expectations and definitions of what a woman is yeah I love that this movie she is just a regular gal.
• 29:26
SPEAKER_01: You know they don't give us some like I mean not saying that this can't be a regular gal but there don't give us some sort of depiction of like a crazy I don't know what what what you know what I'm saying?
• 29:39
SPEAKER_04: Yeah she's um she's actually a she she's if not asexual we don't know that but she just she's no she has no male you know love interest or anything like that.
• 29:48
SPEAKER_04: She's just kind of doing her own thing.
• 29:49
SPEAKER_04: She kind of reminds me of what I what I would be like it's kind of like just kind of doing her own thing kind of makes something of herself and just not she has her eye on the prize of like getting money getting her getting her own place getting through school and that's it.
• 30:02
SPEAKER_04: And she doesn't have time for bullshit she doesn't have time for her roommate who's constantly fucking someone and making a mess and being gross inconsiderate.
• 30:09
SPEAKER_04: Yeah she's like no I'm I need to make something of myself I got this and uh that's refreshing because we not that a woman has to be like this perfect demure person but she's just very likable and Samantha is by far one of my favorite characters in horror because she's just very like it's she's simplistic we don't know a ton about her we don't have to though we just like her yeah and kind of what I was trying to say earlier is like you said she's not like a demure like girly girl yeah um but at the same time is kind of aesthetically to me like the goody girl in a slasher movie.
• 30:42
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 30:43
SPEAKER_01: But she like you said you know Megan points out that she doesn't like children and we don't see her having sex which I guess a goody girl wouldn't but she says things that allude to her not being a goody girl.
• 30:55
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 30:56
SPEAKER_01: And what I was saying earlier is if she had been depicted like maybe one of the girls from We Summon the Darkness who is like really like metal and like piercing Black Eyeliner and she's like oh fuck the patriarchy maybe it wouldn't have been such a powerful statement that all girls don't have to subscribe to this uh patriarchal cultural thing that was being impressed on her.
• 31:16
SPEAKER_04: And that's the that's the weird thing.
• 31:18
SPEAKER_04: I don't think again I don't think Ty West deliberately went into that I think he's just making a simple horror movie and then he just wrote what he wrote but when you're looking at it analytically like it is interesting how it's like it's like a cautionary tale of like oh see the Reagan era all these people they were right like see she was trying to be independent trying and then here stranger dangers she went and met up with a stranger and guess what happened?
• 31:37
SPEAKER_04: And that is a really it's a shame but it makes for a good horror right and um on the on the contrary her best friend Megan who I I I love her character.
• 31:48
SPEAKER_04: I I love how loyal she is I mean she's she's definitely the opposite of of Samantha but like she what like what a good what a well written female character friend that trope of like best friend like like Ty West like nails like what a what a two girls who are BFFs she's there with her she makes sure that she doesn't ditch her initially because she's when they first go to the house to meet up with with Mr.
• 32:12
SPEAKER_04: Olman she's like I really want to stay with you I don't feel comfortable this this is too good to be true.
• 32:17
SPEAKER_01: The money is not worth it let's go home and Samantha's like no no no I need that I need it I need it and then you know as we'll get into Megan uh Megan gets punished too and it sucks but it's scary and also like we were saying earlier very real to me that she is uncomfortable with this situation but she knows that Samantha is not going to leave and so she doesn't do this very horror movie thing where she leaves and then she goes back and gets like killed at the house without Samantha knowing or something.
• 32:48
SPEAKER_01: Like she's like no fuck this like I did you a favor driving out here.
• 32:51
SPEAKER_01: I told you this isn't a good situation you're not gonna listen to me.
• 32:54
  SPEAKER_01: Whatever I'm gonna leave.
• 32:55
SPEAKER_04: But she doesn't actually leave though she leaves the house but she still stays which I which is really again which is such a thing because she's so loyal but she gets punished for it.
• 33:04
SPEAKER_01: So yeah I thought that this honestly because we've already expressed our frustrations with the finale this is my favorite scene of the movie uh because I think it is just such an exciting twist of expectations that you have such a sympathetic character.
• 33:20
SPEAKER_01: You know she's in trouble because what else is gonna happen with this no good man that is just walking up to her car in the middle of nowhere where the hell did you come from did you just hide are you are you not the babysitter?
• 33:36
SPEAKER_01: No I'm not the babysitter my friend first of all really good effect really fun.
• 33:43
SPEAKER_01: Oh god did that get get me the first time I saw that oh my god and completely shocking and that's what's so fun about that is because it doesn't disturb the pace of the movie because like we were saying this is a slow movie and it doesn't feel like this is a moment that's like all right we gotta keep the audience hooked.
• 34:00
SPEAKER_04: It is just a completely like it's kind of a mind blowing literally mind blowing uh moment in my opinion that this could just come out of nowhere so unexpectedly yeah that's definitely one of the best parts of the movie I think and I I wish again like we were like we will get to but like I wish the whole movie was like that in some ways.
• 34:21
SPEAKER_04: I wish like the third act was was more like that was more like shocking like it's not by that point you're just expecting things to happen.
• 34:28
SPEAKER_04: But then again what happens to Samantha is pretty shocking.
• 34:31
SPEAKER_04: So I guess it it comes back around but um but yeah before we get into like the second middle act like prior to that like the buildup I mean Mr.
• 34:40
SPEAKER_04: Ullman he lies to her lies to her face he's and she is so desperate for the cash that I mean he basically tells her like oh it was we really needed it for our mother my my mother in law that wasn't the case you know he he admitted it was a babysitting job like that right there would but if you're desperate for money you have to stay but like you're if it's a it makes you think like would I have stayed would I be if I need to buy an apartment would I have stayed there I don't know and and you you relate to her being like dude I have this I need this money like I can't turn this down I can tell you absolutely 100% I would have stayed.
• 35:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah I probably I don't know the red flag to me is that he's willing to offer her so much money but him lying about the mom and then I think super smooth saying I can't afford to pay both of you I think that I would have been totally convinced and I too would have been like oh he doesn't want her to stay because he feels bad not paying her and I don't want to put him in that situation like I'll send my friend home and then the mom thing just to me isn't that like his justification to me would be totally believable.
• 35:49
SPEAKER_01: I mean I probably would have been like can you show me your mom and tell me what she needs so I mean Samantha get it together.
• 35:57
SPEAKER_01: But besides that like I I just like you said I totally sympathize with her decision.
• 36:02
SPEAKER_04: It's it's one of those things where it's like an like again like you said like a realistic moment of like you can you talk to yourself and say no nothing's gonna happen tonight.
• 36:11
SPEAKER_04: It's one night it's a few hours everything will be fine I'll be fine you you convince yourself that everything's gonna be okay and then you're not mentally prepared for when shit starts to go wrong and as shit starts to go wrong and she starts to see scenes that some things are going wrong in the house and that something's up then that's when she's like not prepared for it because she kind of caught kind of got a little bit too comfortable in the house.
• 36:32
SPEAKER_01: You know she's watching movies she's ordering pizza cracking great dance sequence great iconic dance sequence one of my again one of my favorite scenes in the movie she's what's the song called by Doctor by uh the fix uh I forget what it's called I totally know but the I forget what it's called but she's listening in a little walk minute she's bouncing around I mean just we we love her and we're so concerned for her and then she's trying to she's trying to call Megan which oh gets under it's it just makes my skin crawl like she's trying to call her and her calls are going straight to Megan's dorm uh message machine not voicemail pre pre cell phones but message machine and it's so eerie because she's like teasing it's like she's like hi just kidding gotcha even the classic message yeah yeah back then and I'm like oh and my heart breaks I'm like oh my god she's right outside dead and and she does and Samantha has no idea and it just oh it kills me I'm like that's her best friend oh it breaks my heart the whole next sequence of the movie like a solid 30 minutes of the movie is her just in the house you know she hears a bump here she hears a bump there she's investigating at one point she gets out a chef's knife and she's walking around uh and she's discovering clues that maybe not everything is as they seem you know uh Mrs.
• 37:45
SPEAKER_01: Ullman's fur coats are upstairs when she said they were down she finds a picture of some family members that are in front of the house with the car that the Ulmens use but are not the Ullman's and some um hair in the bathtub and also which I I which I it's so so m minute but I love it she's out over at the sink and she hears something downstairs through the through the drain pipes in the sink.
• 38:12
SPEAKER_04: Do you remember that scene?
• 38:13
SPEAKER_04: Yeah now that you point it out it's so brief but I it's and she starts like listening and I'm like and you're you're just like oh god just get out get out but where's she gonna go?
• 38:21
SPEAKER_04: You know she can't go anywhere.
• 38:23
SPEAKER_01: Yeah what's interesting to me about this is like I said earlier this is the part that really glued me where I was just kind of fascinated by everything that she was doing.
• 38:31
SPEAKER_01: There are these kind of intermittent broadcasts of the news talking about the eclipse that's happening which honestly to me that's kind of the one failure of this movie is that they give us this like time bomb of this eclipse coming at midnight but then they never give us like a countdown which would have been great.
• 38:48
SPEAKER_01: Yeah yeah but a small complaint small complaint but but as we as we saw back in 2017 during that that eclipse remember that eclipse in the in the summer of twenty seventeen people go freaking ape shit batshit crazy for eclipses so it does make people do crazy shit so that I can attest to like people were going absolutely insane trying to see that eclipse in this it was like August of 2017 look it up if you don't remember yeah I have absolutely no memory you don't remember that no did something exciting like did someone kill someone or something no it was just it was an eclipse and people were just like freaking out because that you they're so hard they don't come around very often and people were excited about it to see it and look it up Parker yes 2017 what I was like five years old oh my god anyway I was wondering do you care about any of the clues that she's getting here like what's so fascinating to me is that she's finding things that are ultimately like they make sense in the end of what happens but I care a lot more about watching her in this house and her reactions to everything I this is the first time I've watched like a mystery twisty movie where I'm just like I don't care I would just rather watch her.
• 40:00
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah no I agree.
• 40:01
SPEAKER_04: I actually agree because I because I think it's purposely so I don't want to say tropey has a negative connotation to it.
• 40:07
SPEAKER_04: I just mean like it just feels very like what someone would do.
• 40:11
SPEAKER_04: Because this movie's like half slasher half like haunted house half satanic cult it has all these like mixtures of 70s 80s movies and I think he purposely it's like she grabs a knife like Lori Schrode takes a walk up the stairs the the the violins are girling like like psycho it's like it has so many different elements of other movies that you're almost like it's comforting to watch just someone just creep through the house and and just kind of see like what's going on like you you we just we we we love that we respond to that.
• 40:37
SPEAKER_01: Have you ever walked through your house with a butcher knife?
• 40:41
SPEAKER_04: I funny enough back when I was a kid and my parents were working I came home from school one day and the garage door was wide open and I was scared because I and I thought I was like oh my god did they forget to forget to close it or is someone in there and uh I went and grabbed the knife and walked through the house make sure no one was there.
• 40:58
SPEAKER_04: Instead of just calling the cops or something but I didn't want to you know be dumb if no one was there no one was there.
• 41:02
SPEAKER_01: But yeah and I asked you I think it's funny that you responded with like oh embarrassingly enough because I totally have and I do it all the time and I think it's fun.
• 41:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah I mean I don't do it just for fun like look at me and my knife but like if I hear one noise I'm like get my knife out and even I'm convinced that if I were to get out a knife and see someone I wouldn't stab them yeah it's just more so for like protection of like comfort yeah and um hey guys we live alone so don't don't judge us yeah also don't tell them that don't come for me I have a butcher knife you were mentioning earlier that Samantha is such like a I wouldn't call her a complex character but a very like well realized and three-dimensional character in this movie.
• 41:50
SPEAKER_01: And what I love is I think it's so easy for someone to make that criticism about a character uh who is not given like a backstory or a lot of um explainers about who they are.
• 42:07
SPEAKER_01: I think what's great about this movie is that they don't need that.
• 42:11
SPEAKER_01: She we know who she is because we watch her reacting to things and watching her interacting with things.
• 42:16
SPEAKER_01: And she's such a great character because we see who she is instead of being told who she is and I think that that's really impressive in a way that um is unexpected because like I said like how many times not to shit on uh another co-host of this podcast but how many times have we maybe heard a certain male co-host on this podcast wish for a backstory from like Michael Myers or something and um you know we don't need that.
• 42:47
SPEAKER_01: I think it's easy for someone who doesn't know what to look for to be like well where'd she come from but it's so hard to not feel who Samantha is in this movie.
• 42:58
SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
• 43:00
SPEAKER_04: Ty West nails I think in everything aspect of this movie simplicity.
• 43:04
SPEAKER_04: This movie is very simplistic the plot is simplistic the but but it works because you don't always need a bunch of BS you just need to be able to identify with people and their plights and that's what that's what he nails in this movie.
• 43:17
SPEAKER_04: So yeah totally I totally agree.
• 43:19
SPEAKER_04: I forgot to mention too did we mention that she well she doesn't say it but we see the the bodies of the real family in the one bedroom.
• 43:26
SPEAKER_01: Yes and I was actually going to mention that because there are two moments in this movie besides that incredible shock with uh Megan getting shot in the face yeah but two really haunting images from this movie to me and they are that where she's listening at a door and like we said that we're not like Texas Chainsaw Massacre part of the group with Samantha but we have a little more omniscience here and we kind of pan past her through the door and see the dead bodies of this family that supposedly lived in this house before the omens came.
• 43:59
  SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm
• 44:00
  SPEAKER_01: That terrifying.
• 44:01
  unknown: Yeah.
• 44:02
SPEAKER_01: Especially because she thinks that's the room that the mother is in.
• 44:05
  SPEAKER_04: She has no idea.
• 44:05
SPEAKER_04: And that that's that's another thing that like makes you feel like you're watching this whole thing.
• 44:10
SPEAKER_04: You're like a fly on the wall, or you're like outside of the house just peeking in, you're like, oh god, Samantha, Samantha, and you're just so concerned for her because she has no idea.
• 44:17
SPEAKER_04: She has a feeling, but she doesn't really have an idea.
• 44:20
SPEAKER_04: And then it gets it just she um then that's when she starts to pass out from the pizza, and she wants to be.
• 44:27
  SPEAKER_01: Well, not quite.
• 44:28
SPEAKER_01: Because my other haunting moment, and also real fast on that pan to the bodies, as we mentioned earlier, being surrounded by shadow, there is so much real life fear for me of what is just beyond what we can see.
• 44:42
SPEAKER_01: And how many times have you looked down like a dark hallway and been like, oh my god, what's at the other end of that hallway?
• 44:49
SPEAKER_01: Uh this movie absolutely nails that.
• 44:52
SPEAKER_01: And then the other haunting image to me is when she gets to the top of that staircase and you see those gross fingers wrapping around the door, opening it, and that's when she starts getting fuzzy and passing out.
• 45:06
SPEAKER_01: And I think that the fingers opening the door is so terrifying because we never see a face.
• 45:11
SPEAKER_01: I'm assuming it's this weird goat person, but yeah, love that.
• 45:16
SPEAKER_01: And then that's when it's like, oh, now you've used all of your slowburn tricks.
• 45:20
SPEAKER_01: I guess you gotta get the rest done with.
• 45:24
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's like, oh, run out of time.
• 45:25
  SPEAKER_04: Here we go.
• 45:26
  SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah.
• 45:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, guys, 10 minutes left.
• 45:28
SPEAKER_01: Come on, wrap it up.
• 45:30
SPEAKER_04: The beauty of it too is like the movie was actually was shot in Connecticut.
• 45:35
SPEAKER_04: I don't know if you knew that or not.
• 45:37
  SPEAKER_05: Did not.
• 45:38
SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think I believe they actually shot it in a real house.
• 45:41
SPEAKER_04: I I should look it up real quick, but I I thought they didn't.
• 45:44
  SPEAKER_01: I'm sure I did believe it.
• 45:45
SPEAKER_04: I yeah, so it's it just feels like it feels like that eerie house like around the corner that like no one it's like abandoned.
• 45:51
SPEAKER_04: And it just has that feel to it.
• 45:52
SPEAKER_04: Like, I I what would you before we get into like the very last bit of it, what is your favorite aspect?
• 45:57
SPEAKER_04: Do you look do you appreciate the slasher element of it?
• 45:59
SPEAKER_04: Do you appreciate the haunted house element of it, or do you appreciate the satanic cult element of it the most?
• 46:04
SPEAKER_01: Like what do you what's your preferred definitely the haunted house element.
• 46:09
SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, I think Yeah, like I said, the satanic cult piece of it.
• 46:16
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think that it's nicely threaded through the haunted house piece is like through the clues and things, but the satanic cult part via the finale is uh kind of a bomb to me.
• 46:29
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 46:30
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 46:31
  SPEAKER_04: So I guess we'll I guess we'll get into that.
• 46:34
SPEAKER_01: Um so she's tied up in a big pentagram.
• 46:38
SPEAKER_01: Do you know who this person that's goat?
• 46:40
SPEAKER_01: Is it a goat person or is it just a person with a big forehead?
• 46:43
  SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, I don't even know.
• 46:47
SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, I don't want to be insensitive if this is like some sort of condition, but I'm assuming it's this stylized thing.
• 46:55
SPEAKER_04: I'm pretty sure it's a stylized thing, but yeah, I I think I know the one character is the mother, is Mary Warrenov's character, Mrs.
• 47:03
  SPEAKER_04: Ullman's character is mother.
• 47:05
SPEAKER_04: Um, and then the son is AJ Bow.
• 47:07
SPEAKER_01: So who it's it's the Olman's their son, and then I'm assuming this son, maybe, or the leader person.
• 47:15
  SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I don't know.
• 47:16
  SPEAKER_01: Or Satan.
• 47:17
SPEAKER_01: I even wondered, yeah, if it was like an incarnation of Satan, because if we think about the end of this movie, uh, where she wakes up in a hospital and is inferred implied to be pregnant, yeah.
• 47:30
SPEAKER_01: Um, it is, and you would assume it's a Rosemary's baby situation with like a antichrist baby.
• 47:36
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 47:37
SPEAKER_01: This person is the one that to me is impregnating her with this weird blood ritual.
• 47:44
SPEAKER_01: Um and so yeah, I was thinking maybe some sort of Satan form.
• 47:50
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I and it's funny, the first time I watched this, because as you we we've been talking about, it's so quickly and jarring in the end that I kind of like was missing certain things, and I I actually thought that Mr.
• 48:02
SPEAKER_01: Ullman had raped her, and I was like, wait, you know, somebody changed her clothes.
• 48:07
SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, I mean, and and again, we don't that he could have, we don't really know it.
• 48:11
SPEAKER_04: You know, nothing's clear, nothing is everything's very vague, and it's purposely that way.
• 48:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and if you think about it that way, there is never any like solid indication that's anything supernatural is happening.
• 48:24
SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, her being raped is a very dark but possible reality.
• 48:29
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, the the only thing that would make it supernatural is like the whole element of like the blood moon of the eclipse, like that oh once once that happens, then she's pregnant.
• 48:38
  SPEAKER_04: That's that's that's all we need, a version to to impregnate.
• 48:42
SPEAKER_04: But like, yeah, that's the only thing element that we really have.
• 48:44
SPEAKER_04: Um, and she eventually she escapes in a very oh the the blood is oh god, it's so good.
• 48:51
SPEAKER_04: That slippery, like that makes my skin crawl.
• 48:53
SPEAKER_04: That like when people are slipping, they're trying to run away from blood and she keeps flipping oh god, and she sees is it Megan's body she sees in the top?
• 49:01
  SPEAKER_04: Did they take it?
• 49:02
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, he's running and she escapes.
• 49:06
SPEAKER_04: And what's so brilliant is Mr.
• 49:08
SPEAKER_04: Ullman, like that his villain, like he's creepy and he's evil, but he's also so calm, and he speaks like a little old man, like like your great uncle would, and he's just and he's kind of talked to her and lecture her, and he's like, No, no, like come on, Samantha, like no, we we need you, like it's not about that, blah blah blah.
• 49:25
SPEAKER_04: And he's like trying to like talk like talk her like out of like kill trying to kill herself basically.
• 49:30
SPEAKER_04: She takes a gun out.
• 49:31
SPEAKER_04: How did she how'd she find the gun, by the way?
• 49:32
  SPEAKER_04: Do we know?
• 49:33
SPEAKER_01: Uh she picks up the gun.
• 49:35
SPEAKER_04: I'm uh from the AJ Balance character character, yeah.
• 49:40
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I think what is just missing to me about this finale is that it's so easy.
• 49:46
SPEAKER_01: Like she just I mean, her choking on the blood, completely disgusting.
• 49:50
  SPEAKER_01: I love that.
• 49:51
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 49:51
SPEAKER_01: Anytime somebody chokes on something, I'm like, Yeah.
• 49:56
SPEAKER_01: She just rips right out of those ropes and just kind of like offs everyone one by one and then gets out of the house, which I mean could be an interesting subversion of what you expect from a scary movie, but she just gets out of the house and um well actually she gets shot first, so I guess not that easy.
• 50:13
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 50:13
SPEAKER_01: Um, but she ends up killing Victor and does she kill the goat person?
• 50:21
  SPEAKER_04: I've I've I don't even know.
• 50:23
  SPEAKER_04: And I yeah, that's that's the that's the problem.
• 50:26
SPEAKER_04: I that it happens so fast I don't even comprehend everything that happened.
• 50:29
SPEAKER_01: So well, she gets a good stab in on the goat person.
• 50:32
SPEAKER_01: She gets a thumb to uh Victor's eyeball, then she shoots him, and then the mom uh Mrs.
• 50:39
SPEAKER_01: Ullman shoots her, and then she stabs Mrs.
• 50:42
SPEAKER_01: Ullman and then just runs out the door.
• 50:44
SPEAKER_01: And this is kind of the interesting part of the finale is that she gets out, she has this confrontation with Mr.
• 50:51
SPEAKER_01: Ullman where uh he says something really creepy to her.
• 50:56
SPEAKER_05: What have you done to me?
• 51:02
  SPEAKER_06: They're calling to you.
• 51:04
  SPEAKER_06: Just listen to them.
• 51:12
SPEAKER_06: He's given the sign, he's chosen you.
• 51:15
SPEAKER_06: It's your destiny to accept him.
• 51:18
  SPEAKER_06: No.
• 51:22
SPEAKER_06: Okay, go ahead, go ahead.
• 51:24
SPEAKER_06: Kill me if you want.
• 51:26
SPEAKER_06: I'm just a messenger who who carries out his words.
• 51:33
  SPEAKER_06: Only a moment's away now.
• 51:48
  SPEAKER_06: No, no.
• 51:52
SPEAKER_04: By the cemetery, of course.
• 51:54
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
• 51:55
SPEAKER_01: They live right next to a cemetery.
• 51:56
SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like, um, excuse me, what?
• 51:58
SPEAKER_04: He's trying to lecture her basically, and he and then she when she pulls the gun, he's like, No, no, no, like we need you, we need that baby.
• 52:04
SPEAKER_04: Basically, we need the baby.
• 52:04
SPEAKER_04: Like, it's kind of the same thing as Rosemary's baby.
• 52:06
SPEAKER_04: It's like, no, no, no, we need that baby.
• 52:08
SPEAKER_04: We don't care about you, we need the baby though.
• 52:09
SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, but that's actually kind of a creepy part to me is that she was actually, I would assume, safe the whole time.
• 52:16
SPEAKER_01: Um, but kind of a uh product of her reaction and the circumstances, uh this whole bloodbath, which I mean, honest, like fight back.
• 52:25
SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying she should have just like chilled, but uh you know, it's just always kind of a weird thing where it's like, oh, like they were never going to kill her.
• 52:33
SPEAKER_01: They were just going, she was going to be in this terrible situation.
• 52:35
SPEAKER_04: So yeah, it's um again, one of the scariest elements of Rosemary's baby is she a woman losing control of her own body.
• 52:46
SPEAKER_04: Um, she and and then like again, as we alluded to, like when she wakes up in the hospital, because after she tries to kill herself and does and fails, which I cannot believe she got out of that alive.
• 52:56
SPEAKER_04: But when I saw that, I was like, oh, I was like, my jaw like dropped the first time I watched it, and I was like, oh my god, she survived.
• 53:02
  SPEAKER_04: I couldn't believe it.
• 53:03
SPEAKER_04: But um when the nurse alludes that she's you know, got got a bun in the oven, uh, it's it's ultra alarming because as again, as it comes around, she never she didn't want children.
• 53:13
SPEAKER_04: She made it clear that was a conversation that her and Megan had.
• 53:16
SPEAKER_04: She didn't want kids, and now her life is completely controlled by things that that shouldn't have been, you know, think by the by the patriarchy, if you will.
• 53:25
SPEAKER_04: And it's just that's one of the scariest elements of the movie, and it's so, you know.
• 53:30
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and actually, she so badly didn't want children that she was willing to, you know.
• 53:36
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm not saying it's solely this, but the idea of having this child, which compounded by the fact that it's a Satan child, uh, she was willing to kill herself to not have it.
• 53:47
SPEAKER_01: Which, if you look at a larger metaphor about women in oppression and possibly rape and bodies being surveyed and controlled, yeah.
• 53:56
SPEAKER_01: And uh what's the word?
• 54:00
SPEAKER_01: Um, defiled, but that sounds so negative.
• 54:03
  SPEAKER_01: It's true.
• 54:04
SPEAKER_01: Somebody's body being used against them, which I think really feeds into this uh oppression of women thing.
• 54:10
SPEAKER_01: And you know, even right now there are kind of issues about women's rights and abortion.
• 54:15
SPEAKER_01: And I think, you know, in the 80s, I'm not so sure about this timeline.
• 54:22
  SPEAKER_01: When was abortion legal?
• 54:23
  SPEAKER_04: Good question.
• 54:24
SPEAKER_04: I'm not really sure exactly.
• 54:26
SPEAKER_01: Uh well, we're not here for those kind of facts.
• 54:28
SPEAKER_01: We're here for the horror facts.
• 54:30
SPEAKER_01: So nobody hold it against us if abortion was legal in 1983.
• 54:34
SPEAKER_01: But, you know, the plight of women who, you know, maybe went through something like that, not a satanic cult ritual, but you know, their body being raped and holding a child that they don't want.
• 54:47
SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think it has a really tragic inference here about what has to be what had to be done just for a woman to control their own body.
• 54:57
  SPEAKER_01: And yeah, gross, sad.
• 55:00
SPEAKER_04: 1973, by the way, was the year, was the actual year.
• 55:03
  SPEAKER_01: So yikes.
• 55:04
  SPEAKER_01: So 10 years, uh 10 years.
• 55:07
SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I for I forgot when the yeah, it was early 70s.
• 55:10
SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, no, that's and that's what this movie says so much with actually saying so little.
• 55:17
SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
• 55:17
SPEAKER_04: It had it that's what the brilliant that's what the best kind of horror does.
• 55:21
SPEAKER_04: It's like it doesn't shove anything down your throat, it just kind of you know embeds things in there, and Ty West just kind of subtly puts things in there, and it's commentary that like it's so subtle, but you could analyze it for days.
• 55:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I was all stumbly there because I never want to step on any toes, especially because I, a man, don't need to be telling women about their bodies, but patriarchy.
• 55:44
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
• 55:44
SPEAKER_01: Here I am oppressing, hey Julianne, your body, I own it.
• 55:52
  SPEAKER_04: No, I just I I love this movie, I really do.
• 55:55
SPEAKER_04: I I mean, we look at us, we're going on and on about it.
• 55:58
SPEAKER_04: I just I think it's one of the best contemporary horror films ever made, and ironically, takes so much from the movies that came before it.
• 56:06
SPEAKER_04: So I I mean, but it's and again, it does nothing new, does nothing that we haven't seen a million times before, but it does it so artistically and effectively that it doesn't matter.
• 56:15
SPEAKER_04: And that's it's like, guys, this is what kind of movies we want to see.
• 56:18
SPEAKER_04: This is kind of your upcoming filmmaker, this is what we want to see.
• 56:21
SPEAKER_04: Subtle, you don't need a big script and a big bunch of shit.
• 56:24
SPEAKER_04: You just need a very good movie, you just need some good stuff in there.
• 56:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and we kind of brushed on this when uh Caroline and Ian and I discussed it follows, but only kind of minorly, where that movie's also compared to movies horrors of the 70s.
• 56:39
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 56:40
SPEAKER_01: And it's so weird that the movies that become the like classics uh and the one the contemporary movies that we love are the ones that kind of hearken back to the movies of the past.
• 56:51
SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if that's specifically because we love nostalgia.
• 56:55
SPEAKER_01: Right now, so many horror movies throw everything they can at us because they don't want us to be bored, but it's kind of frustrating that they can't trust us sometime.
• 57:03
SPEAKER_01: Curse of law, your own.
• 57:04
  SPEAKER_01: I'm looking at you.
• 57:05
SPEAKER_01: Um and so yeah, it's curious that that's how it kind of ends up so many times that a movie that can respect the techniques of the past are the ones that we love.
• 57:17
SPEAKER_01: So maybe more movies should try and emulate the 70s.
• 57:22
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, even something like Hereditary is totally inspired by Rosemary's Baby and The Omen and Don't Look Now.
• 57:31
SPEAKER_04: I mean, all those, you know, the best kinds of horror says, What's what do we like about the past and let's make it better?
• 57:36
SPEAKER_04: And it just amplifies it, and uh Ty West nails that.
• 57:39
  SPEAKER_04: So go Ty West.
• 57:41
SPEAKER_01: I love the aesthetic of this movie, and I would love if more movies looked like this.
• 57:46
SPEAKER_01: Which I mean, might just be me wanting things that you know, you know, we never know what's good for us.
• 57:53
SPEAKER_01: Maybe I love this movie's aesthetic because there aren't many movies like it, so who knows?
• 57:58
SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I was just thinking if it was cost effective, maybe more movies should do it.
• 58:03
  SPEAKER_01: But if it's not, then don't.
• 58:05
SPEAKER_04: Well, I know for one thing, I know you had mentioned about the Candyman trailer.
• 58:08
SPEAKER_04: We we both commented that it's a little bit like too kind of sleek for us for our liking.
• 58:12
SPEAKER_04: Like in some ways, like we prefer just a more but that's but that's a modern look, you know, and people just that's what people do nowadays, but we kind of like a little bit more gritty kind of, you know.
• 58:22
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like little texture, and specifically talking about Candyman, that has such beautiful texture to the movie uh that you can see.
• 58:32
SPEAKER_01: And yeah, the new one looks a little glossy.
• 58:35
SPEAKER_01: Do you have anything else to add about this movie?
• 58:38
SPEAKER_04: No, I think we covered everything.
• 58:40
SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, I think we got it all.
• 58:43
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and we also hit on all the satanic panic, Reagan stuff when we discussed We Summon the Darkness, so everybody should go listen to me and Julianne review that new release if you haven't.
• 58:53
SPEAKER_01: And also I wanted to add that it's always just fascinating.
• 58:57
SPEAKER_01: This whole um, you know, satanic panic, also like video nasties and that whole thing.
• 59:06
SPEAKER_01: And also, well, and also I mean more like like the stuff around Columbine and stuff where people try to infer that horror and video games and metal music and these things can have such an effect on our psychological well-being.
• 59:21
  SPEAKER_01: I'm making no point.
• 59:22
SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying I always think that's an interesting topic.
• 59:25
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, it's funny compared mentioning like we saw them in the darkness, like that movie subverts the idea.
• 59:32
SPEAKER_04: Sorry, no spoilers, I'm just but it subverts the idea of like the Satan, the satanic cult being the being the the villain, basically, where this one that's what it is.
• 59:42
SPEAKER_04: That it's just straight up like, yep, the satanic cult is that's that's the problem.
• 59:46
SPEAKER_04: And I mean, do you have a preference?
• 59:48
SPEAKER_04: Like, do you prefer movies that kind of go feed into the trope, or do you have a preference of like movies that are kind of just subverted?
• 59:53
  SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
• 59:55
  SPEAKER_04: Do you care?
• 59:56
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think like like you said, it's all about how you do it.
• 1:00:01
SPEAKER_01: I mean, this one, it's so much more meaningful than I not to spoil our review of We Summon the Darkness, but to me, the result of this movie is so much more meaningful than the result of We Summon the Darkness.
• 1:00:13
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 1:00:13
SPEAKER_01: From The House of the Devil, we only have, well, I guess there are plenty of murders.
• 1:00:19
SPEAKER_04: But there are plenty, but I think there's just one that's the most memorable, let's be honest.
• 1:00:24
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if we're gonna say most memorable murder, Greta Gerwig, you have snatched my wig.
• 1:00:30
SPEAKER_04: As poor Megan, I mean, goddamn, like 45 minutes in, man.
• 1:00:34
SPEAKER_04: I didn't see that shit coming at all.
• 1:00:35
SPEAKER_04: I mean, she we we she was the she was the cool best friend.
• 1:00:38
SPEAKER_01: No one wants no one wants to see that, and she just I know looks good with that feathered hair, too.
• 1:00:44
SPEAKER_04: She looked awesome and smoking her cig, mining her own goddamn business, and here comes AJ Bowen just like if she wasn't gonna die then that lung cancer was gonna get her.
• 1:00:54
  SPEAKER_01: That's true.
• 1:00:55
SPEAKER_01: So she wins most memorable murder in my heart.
• 1:00:58
  SPEAKER_01: You agree?
• 1:00:59
  SPEAKER_04: I agree.
• 1:01:02
  SPEAKER_01: That was my applause.
• 1:01:04
SPEAKER_01: Uh on a scary scale, one to five, how would you rate the house of the devil?
• 1:01:08
SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm going high.
• 1:01:10
  SPEAKER_04: I'm going to three.
• 1:01:11
  SPEAKER_04: Um, I am.
• 1:01:13
  SPEAKER_01: That's not that high.
• 1:01:15
SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, I think relatively speaking, I think three, maybe three and a half.
• 1:01:19
  SPEAKER_04: It's it's not super duper scary.
• 1:01:23
SPEAKER_04: It's just it's creepy and it gets under your skin and it's it's shocking at certain points.
• 1:01:27
SPEAKER_04: And to me, that's a kind of scary that I prefer.
• 1:01:30
SPEAKER_04: So yeah, that's it's totally my bag, and I I think it's legit unnerving.
• 1:01:34
SPEAKER_04: It just builds a tension where it's like a crescendo, and that, like you said, it's the shadowing, it's the lighting.
• 1:01:41
  SPEAKER_04: It's I just think it's legit.
• 1:01:43
SPEAKER_04: A really scary movie that's not in your face scary.
• 1:01:46
  SPEAKER_04: I guess that's what I'm trying to say.
• 1:01:47
SPEAKER_04: It's not nothing blatant about it, but it's just so subtle that where it works.
• 1:01:51
SPEAKER_01: Now, I don't want to shock you, Julianne, because we've just discussed how scared you are right now of shocking things.
• 1:01:58
SPEAKER_01: But I think I'm gonna give this a four out of five.
• 1:02:01
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know.
• 1:02:03
SPEAKER_01: And my reasoning is sometimes I mention that when I'm considering how scary things are, I've seen personally a lot of scary movies at this point.
• 1:02:11
SPEAKER_01: Um, and so sometimes it can be difficult for me to really get scared, which more on that in a moment.
• 1:02:17
SPEAKER_01: But frequently I'll think about how scared would my mom be because she's really scared of scary movies.
• 1:02:22
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 1:02:23
SPEAKER_01: And in this one, the psychological aspect of this movie is so much heavier than the actual like visual things that are happening.
• 1:02:31
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 1:02:32
SPEAKER_01: And I think this movie is so disturbing and dark and like we said earlier, kind of cruel.
• 1:02:38
SPEAKER_01: And that always is so much scarier to me.
• 1:02:41
SPEAKER_01: And on the other side, back to me and goodbye, mom.
• 1:02:46
  SPEAKER_01: Nothing new.
• 1:02:47
SPEAKER_01: Everyone, I'm sure, thinks this, but the chase is scarier than the kill.
• 1:02:51
SPEAKER_01: And this movie is all chase.
• 1:02:54
SPEAKER_01: Like we said earlier, the kill, it's fine, but it's the chase that's really scary.
• 1:02:58
SPEAKER_01: And I wish more movies could do that.
• 1:03:00
  SPEAKER_01: Even the silly ones.
• 1:03:02
SPEAKER_01: Uh as I love the silly, scary movies too.
• 1:03:05
SPEAKER_01: I love all of the slashers, but if all if everyone could just give a little more time to the chase, I would I would love everything a lot more.
• 1:03:13
  SPEAKER_04: You know what?
• 1:03:14
  SPEAKER_04: I'm changing my score.
• 1:03:14
SPEAKER_04: I'm doing a four out of five, too.
• 1:03:16
  SPEAKER_04: Yep.
• 1:03:16
  SPEAKER_04: Damn.
• 1:03:18
  SPEAKER_04: You're convincing me.
• 1:03:18
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 1:03:19
  SPEAKER_04: No, you're right.
• 1:03:19
  SPEAKER_04: You're right.
• 1:03:20
  SPEAKER_04: It's not, again, it's it's it's all psychological, I think.
• 1:03:24
SPEAKER_01: Well, like they say, the man's always right.
• 1:03:26
  SPEAKER_04: So Patriarch and Parker.
• 1:03:30
SPEAKER_01: Oh, ooh, that's what I'm changing my Twitter handle to.
• 1:03:35
SPEAKER_01: So I think it's a pretty pretty big nail biter here.
• 1:03:39
SPEAKER_01: But would you give the House of the Devil a smash or a slash?
• 1:03:43
SPEAKER_04: I mean, smash against the wall in the bedroom and the floor.
• 1:03:48
  SPEAKER_01: Ooh.
• 1:03:51
  SPEAKER_01: Damn.
• 1:03:52
  SPEAKER_01: Big smash.
• 1:03:55
SPEAKER_01: Um smash as well, obviously.
• 1:03:57
SPEAKER_01: Maybe not quite as wild as your smash.
• 1:04:00
SPEAKER_01: Mine more of just like a or vanilla style, yeah.
• 1:04:04
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a respectable smash.
• 1:04:06
SPEAKER_04: A missionary style smash, yeah.
• 1:04:08
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
• 1:04:09
  SPEAKER_01: A little eye contact.
• 1:04:11
SPEAKER_01: Together we have covered The Hunt, We Summon the Darkness, and I guess that's it for now.
• 1:04:16
SPEAKER_01: So we covered those three together, but you are familiar with the entire what's your favorite scary movie canon.
• 1:04:22
SPEAKER_01: What would you say is your favorite scary movie?
• 1:04:25
SPEAKER_04: Are we doing a this current season?
• 1:04:28
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because we all know that Julianne is a rosemary's baby stan.
• 1:04:33
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 1:04:33
SPEAKER_01: And that's season one, that's old news.
• 1:04:35
  SPEAKER_01: Get out of here.
• 1:04:36
SPEAKER_04: I guys, I think I'm gonna go with oh, I gotta go with House of the Devil.
• 1:04:41
SPEAKER_01: I think Wow, that's leaving behind so much.
• 1:04:44
SPEAKER_04: Scream Scream 4 is my very close second, but House of the Devil is good.
• 1:04:49
SPEAKER_01: Well, you heard it here first.
• 1:04:50
SPEAKER_01: It is fact that the House of the Devil is better than Black Christmas.
• 1:04:54
SPEAKER_01: So everyone, take that home.
• 1:04:56
  SPEAKER_04: Which Black Christmas?
• 1:04:57
SPEAKER_04: Wait, wait, no, no, no, no.
• 1:04:59
  SPEAKER_01: 1974, baby.
• 1:05:01
SPEAKER_04: Is that from this season?
• 1:05:02
  SPEAKER_01: Hell yeah.
• 1:05:03
SPEAKER_04: Oh, I forgot about that.
• 1:05:05
  SPEAKER_04: That doesn't count.
• 1:05:05
  SPEAKER_01: It's too late.
• 1:05:07
  SPEAKER_01: It is fact.
• 1:05:08
SPEAKER_01: You're going to have to go add that to your bio.
• 1:05:11
SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think House of the Devil is better than Black Christmas, and that is that.
• 1:05:16
SPEAKER_01: Well, actually, seeing this myself, I'm shocked because Black Christmas is on this season as a Scream 4, but my favorite scary movie is Drag Me to Hell.
• 1:05:26
  SPEAKER_04: Oh, really?
• 1:05:27
  SPEAKER_04: Patriarchy Parker.
• 1:05:28
SPEAKER_01: I love Drag Me to Hell.
• 1:05:30
SPEAKER_01: I want to see more women get dragged to hell, honestly, because we don't need them.
• 1:05:35
  SPEAKER_04: Here it goes, guys.
• 1:05:36
  SPEAKER_04: Cancel.
• 1:05:39
  SPEAKER_04: Cancel Patriarchy Parker 2020.
• 1:05:42
  SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
• 1:05:43
  SPEAKER_01: All right.
• 1:05:44
  SPEAKER_01: Well, Julianne, what's what a pleasure.
• 1:05:46

• 1:06:26
SPEAKER_01: I only like Julianne, everyone else sucks.
• 1:06:28
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, everyone else sucks, right?
