- 1:01good and the parts we wish have gone a little bit differently.
- 1:03As always, Riley. Can you kick?
- 1:04Us off Jenna. I officially live in Narnia and
- 1:06I cannot deal with it. Please expand.
- 1:08All right, so if y'all are new to the.
- 1:10Podcast. I live in North Carolina and I.
- 1:13Grew up here I. Lived in LA for 9 to 10 years
- 1:16and then I moved to Charleston, SC and now I'm back completing
- 1:19the circle in North Carolina. If you're not familiar with
- 1:21North Carolina, it is a very like moderate climate.
- 1:24And ever since I moved back for these like last two years, we
- 1:27have had more snow than I ever had in my entire childhood.
- 1:31And specifically like the last week, our last two weeks, we had
- 1:35over like a foot and a half of snow.
- 1:37And we're supposed to get more snow tonight.
- 1:40And I cannot deal with it. It just, I feel like snow hits
- 1:43so much differently as an adult than it did when you were a kid.
- 1:46And like now as a parent, I'm just over it.
- 1:49And I know I sound so spoiled right now.
- 1:51But the problem is, is with North Carolina, we're not set up
- 1:53for snow. We don't have the clothing, we
- 1:55don't have the snow plows in them.
- 1:57We just don't have the equipment.
- 1:58So like, school has been out for almost 2 weeks.
- 2:01It's just we're over it. Oh.
- 2:02My gosh. Growing up in Colorado, I don't
- 2:04think that I was ever out of school for a snowstorm for that
- 2:07long. And we?
- 2:07Have a lot. Of snow there but again,
- 2:10Colorado is used to that they're anticipating that and I remember
- 2:13like driving to school and being like I can't believe that
- 2:14there's this much snow and school isn't canceled but that
- 2:17again, that's. Because like we had Rd. plows,
- 2:19they salt the roads like all of. Those things that Colorado set
- 2:22up for that North Carolina just isn't.
- 2:24So I can't believe that kids have been out of.
- 2:25School for two weeks. Has Charlie been home a lot more
- 2:27because of that? We have been doing what we call
- 2:29Nanny, so us and the other family that are doing like a
- 2:32nanny share, we have been going and picking up the nanny.
- 2:35We've kind of been splitting transportation because both
- 2:38families have like 4 wheel drive vehicles.
- 2:40The issue is, is not the main roads.
- 2:42So our main roads are mainly cleared at the roads to get out
- 2:46of the neighborhood like and some of our roads because
- 2:48they're not like they're not plowing all the little roads in
- 2:51the neighborhood. We'll have like 2 inches of ice.
- 2:53This week is actually a lot better because we've had snow so
- 2:55that's easier to clear off the roads.
- 2:57But last week we had very thick ice and that is just that's
- 3:01different. And I just didn't drive at all
- 3:03last week. Like I feel like I'm a pretty
- 3:04brave person, but like, I made Rob's drive last week because
- 3:08just the ice. Ice is different and I don't
- 3:10think that any amount of brave would.
- 3:12Get me to drive on ice. I also.
- 3:14Lived in Minnesota. I just want to give myself a
- 3:15little bit of credit because everybody right now, like I know
- 3:18all my northern clients right now are just so over me because
- 3:21they're like, you know what, it's finally 20° here.
- 3:23It's been -40 But I did grow up. I spent some time in Minnesota,
- 3:28so I am used to winter weather kind of, but I don't know.
- 3:31I think it just because we're not set up for it.
- 3:33It's just an abnormality. Well, hopefully things start to
- 3:36warm up because I know that's probably impacting a lot more
- 3:38than just driving for you guys. So.
- 3:40I hope so. My high though is I have been
- 3:43debating about getting a treadmill for like 2 to three
- 3:44months and this week has just been the last straw and I have
- 3:48officially ordered a treadmill and it's coming tomorrow on
- 3:50Friday. So I am so, so excited and I
- 3:53never thought I'd be that excited to see a treadmill.
- 3:55Congratulations on the new. Treadmill.
- 3:57I'm very excited. I'm probably going to hate it
- 3:59and like week, but I'm very excited for it right now.
- 4:02What? Type.
- 4:02Did you decide on? OK, I went back and forth like a
- 4:05million times, but I decided just to get like a basic Nordic
- 4:08track. It's like AT series, it's like
- 4:10their lowest kind of basic level.
- 4:12I decided like I don't need anything super fancy.
- 4:14And if I decide that I want to pursue running greatly and I
- 4:19want to run many, many miles on the treadmill, maybe I'll
- 4:22upgrade in like a year or so if it's if it's for me.
- 4:24But I didn't need to buy a super fancy one right now.
- 4:27I love that. I'm sure I'll have many things
- 4:29to say about it. So I am very excited about my
- 4:31terminal. So that's my high.
- 4:32How about you? I'm going to share the same
- 4:33story for my high and my low. Because it's a lot.
- 4:35Of emotions for sure. I shared a long time ago that
- 4:39I've been dealing or maybe even over a year ago now, have been
- 4:41dealing with like a hamstring issue.
- 4:43And I tried to take some time off of running.
- 4:45I still ran a marathon on it and then I was trying to rehab it,
- 4:49but I was only maybe like half. Heartedly rehabbing.
- 4:51It and taking like. A couple days off.
- 4:54And in reality? What I think my body needed was
- 4:56like a full. Stop from running.
- 4:57So between November and descent, well between really December and
- 5:01January, I did not run a single time, which was really.
- 5:05Really hard especially. As someone who like runs a
- 5:07decent amount and talks about running all the time to just
- 5:10stop running all of a sudden, it was not super fun but.
- 5:13Yesterday for the first. Time I ran and I did not have
- 5:16any hamstring pain. Granted it was more of a, you
- 5:19know, return to running situation with running and
- 5:22walking. We did not go fast.
- 5:23We did not go far, but I didn't have any pain.
- 5:25And that was like the first time that I've run and I don't know
- 5:28how long that I haven't had pain.
- 5:29And it was. Like a huge relief so.
- 5:31Low being that like, what a humbling experience and what a
- 5:34hard two months I've had. High being that I finally ran
- 5:37and I'm just so excited. To.
- 5:38Continue to run and hopefully only feel better and better and
- 5:42better from here on out. Literally like love when you
- 5:44run. Like I get more happy when you
- 5:46get to run than when I get to run.
- 5:48So I'm so excited. Oh my gosh, that's so sweet.
- 5:50I feel the same way about you. I'm like, oh, she's out there.
- 5:52Killing it outside. Even when it's snowing.
- 5:54So I feel the same way. But thank you.
- 5:56I'm so happy, you know, sometimes when you take some
- 5:59time off of some something that you love, you kind of.
- 6:01Expect it to be like you get back.
- 6:02Out there and you ride in a bike and it's no problem and it does
- 6:05not feel that way. That's running though.
- 6:06I feel like you just got to do it for like 2 weeks.
- 6:08Yeah, I'll be back. Once I get to that point, I'm
- 6:10sure it'll feel like I never stopped, but right now it feels.
- 6:13Very different to run. And that's.
- 6:14OK, if you're somebody. Who's going through injury?
- 6:16Or if you are somebody. Who had to take a break from the
- 6:19training that you love? I feel you on that.
- 6:21It's hard, but there. Is an end, I promise.
- 6:23Yeah. And it does.
- 6:24Just because you're not running as much doesn't mean you're not
- 6:26an athlete. There's so, so many other things
- 6:29that you can be doing to benefit your performance, especially,
- 6:31again, right, with the period recovery process or an entry.
- 6:34And those two weeks off of running and the grand scheme of
- 6:36things didn't change my life, so I'm OK.
- 6:39I'm not going to lie though, the two weeks that I have not been
- 6:41able to, it's actually been like a week and a half.
- 6:42I need to stop being dramatic. And I've also been able to run
- 6:45outside. I, I'm feel, I feel it like I
- 6:47feel it right now. So I think it's really
- 6:49interesting because you have kind of just maybe ended that
- 6:53and I feel like I'm in it right now, which again, in the grand
- 6:56scheme of things like me not being able to run the last week
- 6:59and a half because of I know is not that big of a deal even
- 7:01though it stresses me out. It doesn't matter if it's five
- 7:04days or five months, it all feels unfamiliar.
- 7:06And I think that unfamiliarity is what's hard because it's
- 7:08you're. Taking a break from.
- 7:09Something that you love to do. I also think that there's so
- 7:11many parallels with running and like getting back into running
- 7:14or just like the running journey and like the period recovery
- 7:16journey because it can feel like the days are so long, but the
- 7:19time is actually short. And we talk about this all the
- 7:21time in the program where people feel like they've done something
- 7:24for a week, which that's amazing.
- 7:26Good. Job.
- 7:27But in the grand scheme of things, that's really not that
- 7:29long of a time period. Yep.
- 7:31Your period didn't go away overnight.
- 7:32It's not going to come back overnight.
- 7:34We have to work at this for a long time.
- 7:36And sometimes, like in my case with my hamstring, that required
- 7:39a little bit more time and attention than maybe I
- 7:41originally wanted to give it. Did we just give?
- 7:43Ourselves a therapy session. Yeah, I think so.
- 7:45Which is perfect going into today's episode.
- 7:47Which is all about things that drive us bananas.
- 7:50So. We're entering today.
- 7:51In a really great. Place to talk about things that
- 7:53maybe. Made us a little bit mad.
- 7:55On today's episode we are going to be talking about the things
- 7:57that we saw online or out in the world that absolutely drove us
- 8:00bananas. Do you guys want me?
- 8:01To go first today. Yeah, go first.
- 8:03OK, I actually had a client send me something which I'm super
- 8:06excited about. Riley's had clients in the past
- 8:08that has sent her stuff where our bananas episode and I've
- 8:10always been a little bit jealous.
- 8:12So my client sent me something and she was just like, I saw
- 8:14something that drove me bananas and I was like, yes, I'm so
- 8:18excited. So if you're a client of mine
- 8:19and you're listening to this, if you see things that drive you
- 8:22bananas, like please send them to me because I'm going to use
- 8:24them on podcast. My client sent me that she had
- 8:28seen an Instagram post of an influencer that was doing what
- 8:30and I eaten a day while marathon training which I've had beef
- 8:33with what I eat in a day videos. Like I have talked about this
- 8:36before. This is not new news.
- 8:37Everybody knows that this drives me bananas.
- 8:39But this particular individual went on a 14 mile run that day.
- 8:43So we're not talking low mileage. 14 miles is a lot of
- 8:46miles and they fueled with a piece of toast, oatmeal, a salad
- 8:50with chicken and their dessert with some yogurt with fruit.
- 8:52I think this. Brings up a bigger conversation
- 8:55because I do not understand why there seems to be a in the
- 9:00running community and just maybe athletic and even like the
- 9:03normal society community where let's see how little we can fuel
- 9:08with and like that makes it a flex.
- 9:10I just don't understand it. Like why do we think that
- 9:13that's? Cool, it's not it's not a good
- 9:15thing to be under fueled. Imagine if this individual
- 9:18fueled appropriately. She could probably run better.
- 9:20She probably could avoid injury during marathon training.
- 9:23I think it's so concerning because one, if you go to those
- 9:27Instagram influencers page or who's ever page, you can go
- 9:31through their what I eat in a day videos and you start to see
- 9:33like, oh, it's the same yogurt bowl, like it's the same video.
- 9:36So it's not accurate either way, but it still becomes problematic
- 9:40because people think that that's adequate to fuel a 14 mile run.
- 9:44My client also said because of it, she was so heated.
- 9:47I love her so much. She said I think I could eat all
- 9:49of that before noon and possibly still be hungry.
- 9:51So like shout out to her because absolutely yes, so proud of her
- 9:54for saying that. But she was like, I ran to the
- 9:56comments because I was hoping people would be like, Oh my
- 9:59gosh, this is not enough fuel to sustain marathon training.
- 10:02And of course, all of the comments instead were like,
- 10:04you're so disciplined. I wish I had this type of
- 10:07discipline while training. I wish I could run like that and
- 10:10fuel like that and things like that.
- 10:12So it was just like comments about how they wished they could
- 10:15emulate that type of behavior, which I think is even more
- 10:18concerning because if you do go to the comments on those, you're
- 10:20like, oh, this is something that I should be attempting to
- 10:22replicate. It is a desirable outcome to
- 10:26have when you're thinking about fueling or clearly under fueling
- 10:29in this case, and people think that's a good thing.
- 10:31Kind of going where your client went.
- 10:33I actually when you first started your list, before you
- 10:37got to salad, I thought you were describing one meal.
- 10:39Literally. No.
- 10:41I was like, actually, Jenna, that's not that bad.
- 10:43And then I was like, oh, we're doing the whole day right now.
- 10:46Like, not just one meal. Right.
- 10:48Yeah, Toast, oatmeal, we're two separate things.
- 10:51If you're an athlete and you're running 14 miles, toast and
- 10:53oatmeal could totally belong in the same meal together to get
- 10:56you adequate amounts of carbohydrate to fuel a 14 mile
- 10:59run. I have athletes that will eat
- 11:00that before that you go running. I think it's really cool when we
- 11:04see a lot of athletes who work with us within our programs.
- 11:08They're kind of like mindset shift from something is too much
- 11:12to now it's not enough. And I think about all the
- 11:15athletes that I've worked with. Who are?
- 11:18Always like it's too much to eat before training.
- 11:20And then now we have swapped and changed our mindset.
- 11:24So now we're focused on like, that's not enough.
- 11:26So like 60 grams of carbs is not enough.
- 11:28Like how can I get more? Like how am I adding in the
- 11:30nutrients that my body needs? How am I adding more
- 11:32carbohydrates? And that like mindset shift is
- 11:36so important for obviously health and getting your period
- 11:38back, but we see performance benefits from that as well.
- 11:41And I'm sure they just feel better, like I'm sure they just
- 11:44feel better on their runs. Like that girl probably like
- 11:47wasn't able to walk for the rest of the day.
- 11:49Like there's no way her recovery was good enough that it's
- 11:53sustainable for her marathon training.
- 11:56And even if she acts like it is and keeps posting these videos
- 11:59of what she's eating a day during marathon training, I
- 12:01highly doubt she feels very good while she's doing it.
- 12:04Yeah, and she's not going to post about that.
- 12:05Like, nobody posts about their losses.
- 12:08No one's like, I could not walk for three days because I didn't
- 12:11eat enough and I couldn't recover.
- 12:12Everyone's like, oh, I only eat this much food.
- 12:15Like again, not a flex. Or they don't even make the
- 12:17correlation that they're under fueling or their lack of fueling
- 12:21is what led to them being sore for so long.
- 12:23They're like, oh, it's just because I ran a marathon.
- 12:25And yes, like Riley talked about on her New York City Marathon
- 12:28recap, like there was some mechanical soreness post
- 12:31marathon. You've run 26.2 miles, but you
- 12:34shouldn't be feeling like dead and that you need to be in bed
- 12:37recovering for the next week. Like that's a problem.
- 12:40I also feel bad for her because now what has happened is she
- 12:43posted what I eat in a day videos and everybody commented
- 12:47how disciplined she was and like positive reinforce the behavior.
- 12:51So now if she eats more than that or she's hungry.
- 12:54She's going to feel. Like she's doing something wrong
- 12:56or that she's not disciplined. 100% yeah.
- 12:58So what I. Eat in a day.
- 12:59Videos are still driving me bananas.
- 13:01I still don't like them. Nothing has changed.
- 13:04We've talked about this before, we've posted examples of
- 13:07performance plates or things like that, but we don't show
- 13:09every single thing that we all eat in a day because it's very.
- 13:12Unique and individualized. To us, our training and our
- 13:15goals, all of our fueling is going to look very different,
- 13:18despite the fact that right now we're all in a running era.
- 13:21Riley is training for 1/2, Lily is training for 1/2.
- 13:23I'm running again, all of those things are amazing, but that's
- 13:26going to look different for every single one of us based on
- 13:28where we're at in training, what our goals are, and what our
- 13:30needs are. So we're never going to post a
- 13:31What I Eat in a Day video trying to encourage people to fuel with
- 13:34more, because what I need is different from what you need,
- 13:37which is different from what Riley needs, which is different
- 13:38from what Lily needs. I actually stopped posting
- 13:41pictures of my plates like now I will share what char is eating
- 13:44because I don't want people trying to eat like I eat.
- 13:47Because. You get a tiny snapshot with
- 13:49like a a picture of my plate. I mean both of y'all know, like
- 13:52I feel like I'm eating every single time I'm on a call with
- 13:54y'all. Like I eat differently than most
- 13:56people, right? So if I took a picture of my
- 13:58plate, the portions are just going to look different than
- 14:01what you need. Exactly.
- 14:02Which I think goes back to like, that's what works for you is
- 14:05maybe more frequent fueling opportunities throughout the
- 14:07day, but you don't always push that for the athletes that you
- 14:10work with. You're not that they also have
- 14:12to do that. You're finding ways that work
- 14:14for them. And I think that's super
- 14:15important to kind of loop into the conversation is that we're
- 14:18never trying to make you feel like we fuel.
- 14:20We're trying to find what works best to fuel you, so that way
- 14:23you can be the. Best version of yourself.
- 14:24And I think that's what's really overwhelming and frustrating for
- 14:27a lot of athletes on their period recovery journey is
- 14:29because they're looking on Reddit, they're looking at all
- 14:32these places, they're talking to their friends who have overcome
- 14:34hypothomic amenorrhea or have, you know, recovered from Reds.
- 14:38And they're trying to do what other people have done.
- 14:40But we have to figure out what works for you.
- 14:42Like this is so individualized. And of course, if you're trying
- 14:45to mimic what somebody else is doing, whether that's a what I
- 14:48eat in a day video or whether that's a period recovery
- 14:50journey, it might not work for you.
- 14:52It's just going to be frustrating because you're not
- 14:55going to achieve the goal that you want.
- 14:56Also, with these what I eat in a day videos, I think that a lot
- 14:59of girls who see it or people who are on this period recovery
- 15:03journey, it could be really easy to fall into the trap of like
- 15:05the body checking and things like that that these videos
- 15:08usually have of being like, well, they seem like they're OK.
- 15:12They have a six pack, they probably have their period and
- 15:14they're only eating this. But you don't know, like,
- 15:16there's so much going on behind the scenes that they aren't
- 15:18going to post that this influencer fully could be
- 15:21experiencing a lot of issues that you don't see behind the
- 15:24scenes, like poor recovery, like maybe even a missing period that
- 15:28you have to kind of check yourself and be like, I don't
- 15:31know, everything that's going on just because they're eating a
- 15:33salad and having a yogurt bowl for dessert.
- 15:36Willie, I am so glad you said that.
- 15:38All right, let's go next. I can go this isn't necessarily
- 15:40something SO social related or a post that I saw but I am really
- 15:45sick and tired of athletes getting the wrong information
- 15:49when it comes to period recovery and I'm so.
- 15:51Excited that we have. Doctor Catherine Hill on later
- 15:54this month to kind of clear some of these myths and
- 15:57misconceptions up. But I feel so bad for people
- 16:00because athletes are trying to do the right thing oftentimes,
- 16:04right? Like most people lose their
- 16:06period because it intentionally starts off from a good place.
- 16:09People are maybe trying to eat healthy or change the way that
- 16:12they're doing things in order to improve their health, become a
- 16:15better athlete, and then again, it results in a lost period.
- 16:18Then they go to the doctor or they seek help and they're
- 16:22getting the wrong information. Like if I had a dollar, maybe
- 16:26even a a penny for how many? People reach out.
- 16:28About how they were put on a oral contraceptive to get their
- 16:32period back. I would be a very rich woman,
- 16:34unfortunately. I think it was standard for so
- 16:37long, which it never should have been the standard like there
- 16:40always should have been some searching into why we're missing
- 16:44a period, but I think it became a habit for a lot of physicians
- 16:48and OB gens and things like that, that it's sad that it's
- 16:52the case. A lot of our athletes come to us
- 16:54feeling disheartened because they were just told and kind of
- 16:57written off by their doctors to just get on the birth control
- 17:01pill. Similarly to you.
- 17:02Riley, I'm excited that we're having Doctor Hill on later this
- 17:05month to kind of go through the importance of meeting with the
- 17:08physician that understands a little bit more about like the
- 17:10Reds recovery process and what being on hormonal contraceptive
- 17:14actually means for that recovery process as well.
- 17:16But I think that there's a potential that a lot of people
- 17:20going to a physician are looking for something that just solves
- 17:23the missing period. And in a way, if you were
- 17:26looking at it from a purely aerial view, if you start taking
- 17:29oral contraceptive when you don't have a period, there's a
- 17:31chance that you will start to experience some type of a bleed.
- 17:34That doesn't mean it's a true period.
- 17:35And Doctor Hill's going to talk more about that when we have
- 17:37that conversation. But that can be incredibly
- 17:39confusing because all of a sudden the athlete, OK, now I
- 17:42have a period like I did get, I did get a bleed and so I must be
- 17:46OK now. And that's not necessarily the
- 17:48case. And I think it's just really
- 17:50confusing for athletes. Because.
- 17:52They go to a trusted provider and then we're like, actually
- 17:56that's wrong. That's just confusing.
- 17:57Like everybody in the space is, is saying different things, even
- 18:01guidelines for getting your period back, like we take a very
- 18:04different approach within our period recovery program.
- 18:06It's different than what's been commonly taught or talked about
- 18:11in the space. We work with athletes.
- 18:12Like we work with athletes who want to keep training or can't
- 18:15stop training because scholarships or jobs or even
- 18:19like mental health, like relies on their their training.
- 18:22I think it's just really confusing because we're saying a
- 18:24lot of different things than what's been, I guess, commonly
- 18:28shared. Confusion pieces so hard for
- 18:30athletes. And I think even the athletes
- 18:32who do choose to get on, like the oral contraceptive, they
- 18:36sometimes see it as a fix and then don't make the further
- 18:41changes to their feeling and things like that.
- 18:43Because there are a lot of women who might go to their doctor and
- 18:47get this opinion from them that don't know that there is a
- 18:50fueling aspect. And that also isn't good either.
- 18:54There's so many factors that go into it.
- 18:56And it is a decision that is individual to an athlete on how
- 19:00they want to proceed with their treatment of a missing period.
- 19:03But there's more to it than just getting on the birth control
- 19:07pill, all right? That's enough for of my ranting.
- 19:10Lily, what's driving you bananas this week?
- 19:12OK so mine is from TikTok. Are we shocked?
- 19:15So Riley actually reposted this on Instagram because the creator
- 19:21had posted it on Instagram as well.
- 19:23I had seen it on TikTok when it like first came out and it was a
- 19:27clinical dietitian who had posted about how she
- 19:32consistently experiences older women, people, anyone talking
- 19:37about how they want to be smaller.
- 19:39And the comments were so sad. Although our target audience,
- 19:46the people who are listening probably don't fall in this like
- 19:48older age range. I think it's really important to
- 19:51talk about because we're setting the standard as we get older on
- 19:54how we're talking about our bodies.
- 19:56And also if your grandparents are talking about your bodies
- 20:00like they are in this video, we need to work on correcting it.
- 20:03And just for a little bit more context, these comments were all
- 20:07about how these people had their grandparents who wouldn't eat
- 20:11like. Eat very small portions, things
- 20:13like that and would constantly be talking about their bodies
- 20:18and how they wish it was smaller or if they lost weight, which is
- 20:21common in the older population. They were happy that they lost
- 20:25weight, which realistically it's found that the more weight we
- 20:29have on our bodies as we get older is actually protective for
- 20:33when we get sick and things like that.
- 20:35You don't want to be frail, you don't want to be teeny tiny, you
- 20:38don't want to be in the smallest body possible.
- 20:40And that's what a lot of these women and men are told to be
- 20:44chasing after. And so that's what was driving
- 20:47me bananas is just reading those comments, 'cause I read it when
- 20:49it originally came out and a little sad.
- 20:52I am a very emotional person. I felt like I was going to cry
- 20:55when I read some of those things that people were saying because
- 20:59it's so incredibly sad. There were so many comments
- 21:01about women who were going through cancer treatment or
- 21:05towards the end of their life and they were still celebrating
- 21:08or attempting to alter how their body looks.
- 21:11And I just think that it is so sad that it has been ingrained
- 21:14in our mind that that is what will create happiness.
- 21:16That is what will create a life worth living.
- 21:19And in reality, none of those things, being in a small body,
- 21:23existing in a smaller body, is not going to all of a sudden
- 21:25create happiness in your life. It's not going to all of a
- 21:28sudden change the outcome of certain things.
- 21:30And it's just so sad that we've been led to believe that that's
- 21:33the truth. And I completely agree with you,
- 21:36Lily, on that. Like, it drove me bananas seeing
- 21:39that. Like, that's still how we're
- 21:40viewing and talking about people's bodies.
- 21:43And it made me so sad that so many people towards the end of
- 21:47their life still wanted to be. Smaller.
- 21:50Yeah. And I have some clinical
- 21:53experience. And so I was one of these
- 21:55clinical dietitians that was asking these older women about
- 21:58their weight. And a very common question that
- 22:00we ask is if they have unintentionally lost any weight.
- 22:03The amount of people who would respond to that I wish or Yeah,
- 22:07but it's a good thing. And things like that.
- 22:10It was super disheartening to hear, and I just drives me
- 22:14bananas. So if your grandma's talking
- 22:16like this, please tell her that she's safer without losing a
- 22:20bunch of weight. She might not be ready to hear
- 22:22it though. That's the only issue.
- 22:23I think that's why when Riley talks about raising a daughter,
- 22:27how she is talking about fueling and body and body changes that
- 22:31like we have an opportunity to change that.
- 22:34And I think that's incredibly important, especially right now
- 22:37with like skinny talk and how Hollywood is presenting
- 22:40themselves right now that we try to be the change.
- 22:44Because I know that we've talked about trying to be the change in
- 22:46the past or other, you know, past meeting, you know, years
- 22:49ago when talking about people's bodies, like I remember like TV
- 22:52shows that would call somebody out and say that they were
- 22:54overweight or something like that.
- 22:55Now looking back and seeing that, I can't believe that those
- 22:58people were labeled in that way or talked about in that way or
- 23:01that was even talked about in general.
- 23:03But I do think that we have an opportunity to like change that
- 23:06standard or change that rhetoric.
- 23:08I love that Riley is so open about like how she talks about
- 23:11those things in front of her daughter.
- 23:12So it's different. For her trying, but to be
- 23:14completely honest, like there's so many outside forces like.
- 23:17That are at play, like she'll be.
- 23:19Out in public and, you know, people, maybe servers like
- 23:22providing food at restaurants or just people at the grocery.
- 23:25Store or just there's. So many comments and I think
- 23:28that is something that I'm hyper aware of and like I've always at
- 23:32least noticed we get a lot of eyes on us as dietitians, like
- 23:35people always looking at what we're eating and things like
- 23:37that. And it always cracks me up
- 23:38because you would be like. You eat like normal.
- 23:40And I'm like, OK, like, how am I supposed to eat?
- 23:42Like, what do you want from me? What is normal?
- 23:44But like, I just think that. There's continual conversation
- 23:48and like, it's going to take all of us.
- 23:50It's just going to take all of us to make a big impact.
- 23:52Didn't change. It's crazy how much like food
- 23:55talk is embedded and just day-to-day conversations like
- 23:59you're right, like at the grocery store, servers at
- 24:01restaurants, things like that. Even outside of like grocery
- 24:04stores and restaurants where food is directly in front of
- 24:07you, like just day-to-day people make comments about their
- 24:10bodies, about food, about all these things that I had talked
- 24:14about it. I think our last What drives us
- 24:15bananas about that? Young ears pick up on all that.
- 24:18Stuff. I was just about to say that I
- 24:20think that you specifically had shared some really wise words
- 24:23when it came to the fact that like when you're talking about
- 24:26yourself, there might be someone else listening and that young
- 24:29person or maybe not young person is impressionable.
- 24:32And if you're talking negatively about your body, they're going
- 24:34to think that there is maybe something that they should be
- 24:37changing or thinking about too. It is honestly wild, like how
- 24:40impressionable young kids are. Like it's just.
- 24:43Crazy. Like I will say one thing or
- 24:45like put something in one place, like this document right here,
- 24:48right? I'm going to put it on this one
- 24:49spot on my desk, and that's the first time Charlie's going to
- 24:52see that document on my desk and she's going to think it goes
- 24:54there every single time. Or like a word.
- 24:56This is a PG podcast, so I'm not going to cuss on it, but Rob's
- 25:00might have tripped and might have said something that kind of
- 25:03rhymes with or similar to the word ship.
- 25:05Then every time Charlie falls, we have to divert language.
- 25:10So that's what we're dealing with over here, people.
- 25:12Yeah. So I just think people like,
- 25:14kids are so impressionable and like, I know this is different
- 25:17than what we're supposed to be talking about today.
- 25:18But I do think, like figuring out my personal issue with food,
- 25:22having a good relationship with my body.
- 25:23Like I share a lot about my journey on a previous podcast
- 25:26episode. But like, that was one of the
- 25:27best things I ever did, like in preparation for becoming a mom.
- 25:31Any closing thoughts? Things that drive us bananas.
- 25:33Stop comparing yourself to other people.
- 25:35And if you're seeing what I eat in a day videos on your
- 25:37Instagram, TikTok or something like that, time to do a social
- 25:40media clean out. Yep.
- 25:41Well, I love these episodes. They get me heated.
- 25:43They get me ready for the day. So thank you guys for bringing
