- 0:10with Glenn Alex. Our ways to engage with today's
- 0:13episode are as follows. Be aware of saying you should do
- 0:18something and change it to could think of things as you are
- 0:23capable and can do them, rather than twisting reality to what
- 0:29you quote should be doing but aren't.
- 0:33See how this changes your motivation and perception of
- 0:38yourself as you make this simple shift in language.
- 0:44We hope you find this supportive and helps you think as you're
- 0:47listening today and engaging with our episode with our
- 0:51Franklin. Alex, thanks so much for being
- 0:53with us. Hello, field podcast audience,
- 1:12Glad to be with you here today. I've got a friend here with me
- 1:16that you, if you've been following us at all, you.
- 1:19She's been on a panel with me couple of months ago and she's
- 1:23I've also gotten to be a guest on her podcast.
- 1:26And now it's my turn to bring her to the field podcast.
- 1:29And Glenn and I connected via our good friends at pod match.
- 1:33But I'm happy to have Glenn Alex here with me today.
- 1:36She's going to have a ton of wisdom and insight and that
- 1:40really goes into how she describes herself.
- 1:43She describes herself as intuitive, insightful, creative,
- 1:48visionary, where she sees the big picture, but she also sees
- 1:51the small parts that feed into what make that big picture,
- 1:55which I love that delineation she made within that integrity
- 2:00and joyful. Glenn.
- 2:02Alex, welcome to the Field podcast.
- 2:05Hi, Melissa. Thank you so much for this
- 2:08opportunity. I'm really looking forward to
- 2:10this conversation. Me too, me too.
- 2:13And you have so much to say about these talking points and
- 2:16you've done, you know so much about all of these things
- 2:18already. And so and we'll talk about you
- 2:21really do. I mean you, you've got a lot of
- 2:24insights on that, as you know, and you and you and it comes
- 2:27both professionally and just from life experience.
- 2:30And so and we'll talk about at the end where people can find
- 2:33you and follow you and they'll understand what I'm talking
- 2:35about. Go back and check out the great
- 2:37panel. Check out Glenn and I's
- 2:39conversation that we had on the Glenn Alex show a few months
- 2:43back. But but let's get started with
- 2:45how to prioritize self-care in your life and what has your
- 2:49journey been with like like with that.
- 2:53I, I think how to is not as important to me because these
- 3:00days you can Google anything how to do XYZ.
- 3:05What I find with clients and people I know personally is they
- 3:09know how they don't have a why. So I would recommend starting
- 3:16with the why. Why to why take care of
- 3:20yourself. Why be as healthy as you can.
- 3:24Why have these wonderful people around you versus negative
- 3:28people. It's the why, and once you
- 3:33crystallize your why, then the how to follows and the
- 3:37commitment to the how to. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:41Connecting that why behind it, because the why is like, Oh
- 3:44well, why? Well, I, I want to be the
- 3:47healthiest version of myself. I want to have a field cup and
- 3:50show up well for my people. That is a very terrifying way to
- 3:54approach that. I'd love that.
- 3:56When did you realize that's where the power was for you?
- 4:01Oh boy, it it's it was early in my journey.
- 4:06I would say growing up, I could see a lot of people stumbling.
- 4:14I'm blessed to be the youngest of 10.
- 4:17So I had a lot of yes. So I had a lot of examples.
- 4:21And my mother came from a huge family as well.
- 4:24We had a very full social life on the in the neighborhood.
- 4:28So I, I learned from watching people that they knew how they
- 4:37just didn't. And so I picked up along the way
- 4:42that, you know, there's more to it than just knowledge is not
- 4:46power for me. Knowledge is potential.
- 4:48It's the application of that knowledge.
- 4:50That's power. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:53And and you were in because you are such an intuitive, this
- 4:58really goes with the intuitive, insightful and visionary piece
- 5:01in you. You knew you recognized those
- 5:04things from an early age. Like there's some parts here
- 5:08that are missing and getting the application done and and what is
- 5:13it that needs to be tapped into? Because I talk a lot about on
- 5:17here and we'll get into why and values later and embracing your
- 5:22layers because we prioritize what we value.
- 5:24We prioritize what we understand.
- 5:28The why behind it becomes a value and a priority of ours
- 5:32because we've defined that and we understand it and it's
- 5:36connected to us and not what other people are saying we
- 5:40should do, but to what is important and valuable to us.
- 5:43So I'd love. That, yes, yeah.
- 5:48Yeah, and you've learned. I mean, you have plenty of
- 5:49people around you for them to learn from.
- 5:51That's really, ah, I love that so much.
- 5:53What are activities that really support you in this?
- 5:59In my self-care. Yeah.
- 6:03Oh I'd love my down time. I am a busy girl, and I even
- 6:08schedule downtime just to sit and chill if I want to read or
- 6:14if I want to write or if I just want to look out the window or
- 6:17take a nap. That's very nurturing for me.
- 6:22And as an introvert, I do need that to reset my batteries
- 6:27actually. So downtime is really important
- 6:30to me. Nourishment, food, nourishment
- 6:39from authentic people, Just that energy and support and being
- 6:44surrounded by that emotional comforter is is a huge part of
- 6:52myself care. I am intolerant of Debbie
- 6:56Downer's and negative Nancy's and because they know how to,
- 7:01they just don't do it so. They don't make the choice
- 7:06within it to shift absolutely. Absolutely.
- 7:10Absolutely. And I also believe that
- 7:12self-care not only promotes living in total health, which is
- 7:18the balancing between the physical, mental, emotional and
- 7:21spiritual aspects of who we are. I think self-care also
- 7:26communicates your worth to other people.
- 7:29Yeah. Absolutely.
- 7:31As part of the why? What do you want to communicate
- 7:34to other people about yourself? Yeah, and it informs them of how
- 7:39to treat you and what you won't tolerate.
- 7:42Absolutely, Absolutely. I love that emotional blanket
- 7:47metaphor. I think that's really powerful.
- 7:49That's so good. Oh, good stuff there.
- 7:51All right. And you mentioned this already.
- 7:54You prioritize and put in your schedule, your downtime.
- 7:58You know that's important to you.
- 7:59That is a healthy boundary that you have created for yourself in
- 8:04your schedule. Talk to me about your boundaries
- 8:08journey and learning to set aside those times for yourself
- 8:13and in other areas of your life, how you've learned to apply
- 8:16these things. Well, I didn't understand the
- 8:20word boundaries. Again growing up and in our
- 8:24social settings, I could see I was so captivated by how people
- 8:29interacted with each other. I would just sit and watch and
- 8:32you can see the smiles or you can see the eyebrows raised or
- 8:35you can see the cringe. You can see the pained look on
- 8:39someone's face. And and that communicated to me
- 8:43that there were lines. To.
- 8:45Cross and lines not to cross. And so as I grew and learned and
- 8:51became more educated and trained, it, it, it, I'll come
- 8:57back and say as the youngest of 10, I was a very quiet and, and
- 9:02shy child. And I didn't really speak up for
- 9:07myself growing up until something happened when I turned
- 9:1015. I started using the word no.
- 9:15And it was so foreign in my family.
- 9:19My sister, my oldest sister, started calling me space baby
- 9:23because she thought I was abducted.
- 9:25And who are you? Get over your brain.
- 9:34Where did you learn this from? Oh my gosh, now.
- 9:38And so that note was specific to babysitting because as the
- 9:42youngest of 10, there were a lot of nieces and nephews to take
- 9:45care of. And so that's where I started my
- 9:48own personal journey with setting boundaries.
- 9:51And then it just evolved to the more subtle boundaries of
- 9:57interaction of how you can talk to me, how you can touch me,
- 10:02you're too close in my space. And so I just, it just kind of
- 10:07gradually grew from there. Yeah, I think, and I say this
- 10:12because I've got some in my family, but I really think that
- 10:15people who are born with that intuition and and many times in
- 10:24in my experience are more introverted.
- 10:27You're almost you haven't really innate instinct of what is too
- 10:32much for you and when to say no you more.
- 10:36So I think myself is an extrovert.
- 10:39It took me years to realize I'm an extrovert.
- 10:42So I'm out with everybody all the time doing all things.
- 10:45And I had to realize like even I need to have, I have some lines
- 10:49in the sand and, and I'm very aware of that now, but for many
- 10:52years. And I would tell you that the,
- 10:54the intuitives and impacts and introverts in my life have a
- 10:59very strong awareness because you're taking in so much.
- 11:05You're so picking up on so many things that are going on in the
- 11:08room and taking in other people's experiences.
- 11:11You don't have to be the loudest voice.
- 11:13You're taking in everything around you.
- 11:16And I think there's so much power.
- 11:18It's a little bit of a superpower.
- 11:20I think that sometimes those of us that are a little more vocal
- 11:25and just miss out on because we're always the ones doing the
- 11:30engaging and talking and not the sitting back and taking it.
- 11:35I think there's a lot, there's a that's a gift in a lot of ways.
- 11:39Well, I I appreciate you saying that.
- 11:41And that brought up memories of the times when my intuition and
- 11:48my observations were like, OK, I don't want to go there.
- 11:50I don't want that person around me.
- 11:51I don't want to do that. And I was criticized for either
- 11:56being too sensitive or too judgmental.
- 11:59I'm like, OK, if you think that it's not safe for me to go
- 12:04there, and if you want to, OK, it's not safe for me emotionally
- 12:08or mentally and I'm not doing it.
- 12:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that's, and that's that
- 12:14awareness of you have of yourself.
- 12:16It's like, all right, well, that's your decision.
- 12:18But for me, you will not deter me.
- 12:20I'm going to, I'm going to touch that and listen to that.
- 12:23And I think that's such a powerful thing and empowering
- 12:26thing too for you. And I I really wish more humans
- 12:31were connected with themselves in that way.
- 12:33I think the world would be in a much better place if if we had
- 12:37that healthier connection with ourselves.
- 12:40Yeah, and I think we need to change the narrative around what
- 12:44being sensitive means. Sensitive is a strength,
- 12:47sensitive is sensitive is knowing and feeling and trusting
- 12:52and listening to and. And I think that's such AI call
- 12:58it a superpower. And so it's like, let's let's be
- 13:02very mindful of how we communicate with those in our
- 13:05lives about that. And just because it's and
- 13:09getting if it feels uncomfortable for you or off
- 13:12putting, you ask yourself why get curious about yourself about
- 13:17that, because that's more of an issue that's going on inside of
- 13:20you than it is with that other person and that knows what their
- 13:25lines in the sand are. I love that and senses that and
- 13:28trusts that so good. All right, you mentioned this
- 13:31earlier also when it comes to self-care and it's tending to
- 13:34all these pieces and parts of us, but taking care of our
- 13:38emotional health, mental health, physical health, spiritual
- 13:43health, it's all a part of this package.
- 13:46Talk to me about your awareness and journey with that.
- 13:51Well, as far as emotional health and Wellness, I think it's
- 13:58crucial to understand that emotions are natural to the
- 14:02human condition. Yeah, I have clients who condemn
- 14:06themselves for feeling, for getting angry or sad or afraid.
- 14:12That's natural. It's unpacking the layers of the
- 14:17emotion that will walk you to your spot of empowerment.
- 14:23And so I work on emotional intelligence with my clients and
- 14:26explain to them that the emotions and the intellect are
- 14:30partners. 1 is not more valuable than the other.
- 14:34They must work together for us to unpack those layers and to
- 14:39make the best choices available to us to enhance our life
- 14:42experience. So, you know, along my journey,
- 14:47there was a lot of anger. I was angry a lot.
- 14:49I didn't understand how people could hurt each other.
- 14:54I, I struggled with making sense of, of pain and suffering and,
- 15:00and until I, you know, probably early 20s went away to, to, to
- 15:04college. Then I started to see individual
- 15:09choices and responsibilities or a lack of responsibilities and,
- 15:14and how they just manage themselves when they were
- 15:17distressed or stressed or even happy.
- 15:22And so that just gave me more information about emotions and
- 15:30mindset and how that that leads to choices.
- 15:35Yeah, Yeah. Do you think that understanding
- 15:38did that lead you down the road you chose professionally?
- 15:46I've. Yeah, it did.
- 15:48It did because I wanted to help other people understand
- 15:52themselves better in that way and their internal experiences,
- 15:57what to make of it, reflecting on it, choices, changes,
- 16:02etcetera. So yeah, that actually did lead
- 16:04me to where I am my, my, my line of work because I really love
- 16:10numbers. And I, I actually first went to
- 16:14school for accounting for business and it was too
- 16:18isolating. And I said, no, there's more,
- 16:21there's something else I need to do.
- 16:22So then that led me into social work.
- 16:26OK, OK, I love how you recognize that too.
- 16:29It's like, OK, no, there's more here because sometimes I it's
- 16:33real easy, especially, you know, when you're in college, you're
- 16:37like, oh, this is it. This is a route that I could go
- 16:40and make a good living and, and you know, all those things and
- 16:43not get kind of drawn into that and ignore that intuition of
- 16:48like, no, I think there's something more for me that's
- 16:51more aligned. But I think that goes back to
- 16:54that trusting yourself piece, that trusting that insight and
- 16:57that intuition. I I agree with that and, and let
- 17:01me say that I am completely blessed to have the level of
- 17:07self-awareness I do. It's it.
- 17:10It takes a lot of energy to stay aware and self-conscious of what
- 17:15I'm doing, thinking, feeling and saying at any given moment.
- 17:20Yet it is an absolute blessing for me because I I know where I
- 17:24exist in space and I believe other humans have this ability
- 17:29to. We just ignore it, we override
- 17:32it, or we just assume other people know better than we do
- 17:36for ourselves. Yeah, yeah, I think that's I,
- 17:40I'm so glad you pointed out that feeling blessed and and grateful
- 17:44peace. And but, you know, you made a
- 17:46choice for that too, which I think is really powerful.
- 17:49But you're and you're helping other people see their choice in
- 17:52it, I think is for that. And that is so when you realize
- 17:57you've got more within you than you previously acknowledged,
- 18:02that's very empowering. Oh, it's.
- 18:04So empowering, yeah. And comforting.
- 18:07Yes, yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 18:11And that goes beautifully into how we support ourselves and
- 18:15other women in living unapologetically.
- 18:18This is a gateway to that, that ability to embrace that and see
- 18:22that within ourselves and then help other and support other
- 18:25people in doing that. That's the whole framework of
- 18:29what you do. Is that have you viewed it that
- 18:32way or is that, is that like, oh, I guess that is?
- 18:38I don't know if I viewed it exactly that way.
- 18:41That's a, that's a new framework for me.
- 18:45Yeah. So thank you for that.
- 18:50I I suppose just thinking about it now that being self aware,
- 18:55self-conscious, taking responsibility and
- 18:59accountability for my choices makes it easier to support other
- 19:05women. Yeah, Yeah.
- 19:08Well, it's because I think that you are operating, you've got
- 19:11that foundation, so you're operating from a very confident,
- 19:16foundational assured place. And so that allows you to, but
- 19:23you also know it takes work and time and energy.
- 19:26So it creates an empathy for others and their ability to do
- 19:31that because you understand it yourself.
- 19:34Yes, yes. And when we are empowered in
- 19:38that way, then we don't need or even want to compare ourselves
- 19:44to others. I I think that is a huge fault
- 19:49line that we women in particular, engage in.
- 19:54And oh, she's prettier, she has better hair, she has more money,
- 19:57she's skinnier. I don't care.
- 20:01Yes. And then and yeah, and there's
- 20:04so much, there is so much power in that.
- 20:06Do you think, you know, you have your show, the Glenn Alex show
- 20:10as well. Do you think this played a role
- 20:13in you wanting to share on a broader scope because you
- 20:16obviously have your people that you work with one-on-one, but
- 20:19you're also able to share this knowledge in such a more
- 20:22expansive form on your on on your podcast.
- 20:25So talk to me about that impact too, of being able to show up in
- 20:29this way for so many more women. It absolutely, it absolutely led
- 20:34to the development of the Glenn Alex Show, which I resisted for
- 20:38like a year. I was a guest on another show
- 20:43and that host, he hounded me for like a year.
- 20:46You should have your own show. You should have your own show.
- 20:48And then as I'm, you know, writing blogs and, and, and I
- 20:54said, yeah, I, I really wish that we would teach boundaries
- 21:01and emotional intelligence in grade school.
- 21:05Yes. In grade school.
- 21:07And so I'm thinking about that. I said, yeah, I I could share
- 21:12this information with the wider, wider audience.
- 21:15And this is a great way to do that.
- 21:17And so, yeah, that's what led to the Glen Allen show.
- 21:20Yeah, I love that, that I think that's such an important thing.
- 21:23If we think if, if we could empower our kiddos in the world
- 21:30to know how to navigate their emotions and express them in a
- 21:35healthy way, there's so many generations of discipline and
- 21:40punishment that really shuts down the emotional processing
- 21:44for kids because that's just what we've seen happen.
- 21:48So there's not the curiosity of like and sitting in the
- 21:52discomfort of like. All right, you're throwing a fit
- 21:55right now. What's happening here?
- 21:57You know, you're acting out. What's happening here?
- 22:00What let's you know, what can we do to settle and breathe?
- 22:04You know, we're just like, go to your room or you're grounded or,
- 22:07you know, that's going to be seen for years and it doesn't
- 22:10open the door. I'm sorry.
- 22:12I'm sorry. I just, I have a lot of clients
- 22:16who were told and bought into. You shouldn't feel that way.
- 22:23Yeah. Don't be angry.
- 22:28Yeah. And so now they stuff their
- 22:30emotions and they come out in these other ways, as you say,
- 22:33acting out. Yeah, and it's so disempowering
- 22:37when someone tells you that what you're feeling isn't if they're
- 22:43not affirming that it's not justified, you know, it's.
- 22:46And so then there's there can be shame that goes with that as.
- 22:50Well. You know, I mean, there's so
- 22:52many layers that pile on top of if we just were able to one it
- 22:58comes it has to start with the adults in the room knowing how
- 23:02to process and move through their own emotions so that
- 23:05they've got the capacity and space to help these kids do it.
- 23:09But it'd be a game changer if we could do that 1000.
- 23:13Absolutely a game. Changer and change the change
- 23:16for those kids moving forward into adulthood.
- 23:19What a gift that would be. Yeah, I.
- 23:21Totally agree. I totally agree and I think
- 23:24other ways we can support ourselves and other women
- 23:27unapologetically is to adopt the relationship and become your own
- 23:36best friend. Yeah.
- 23:38If you're having I have a client who's just.
- 23:43She's so self loathing for any normal experience.
- 23:49She just beats herself up and I'm like, well what would you
- 23:51say to your best friend if she was going through the same
- 23:53thing? Oh it'll be OK, it'll get
- 23:55better. You can handle this.
- 23:57I'm like, then be your own best friend.
- 24:00Yeah. Use yourself talk to work
- 24:03through and process through your distressing experiences, even
- 24:07the positive experiences. Absolutely, yeah.
- 24:11I feel a joy. Yeah, yes, yes.
- 24:16I, I think another thing that would be really huge in
- 24:20supporting ourselves and other women unapologetically is if we
- 24:24do talk less and listen more, sometimes we just listen to fill
- 24:29in our own blanks or we listen to respond.
- 24:33We don't really hear where the person is coming from.
- 24:38I had a client who's just all over the place.
- 24:40She was just having just difficulty with her adult
- 24:46children. She couldn't see her
- 24:47grandchildren. She was having problems on the
- 24:49job with her partner. And all I did was listen and
- 24:56ask, you know, a poignant question here and there.
- 25:00And it helped her to reflect and calm.
- 25:03And so she sent me a message later and she said thank you for
- 25:07your supportive presence. And so sometimes that's all it
- 25:11takes is an ear and people can get to the point where they can
- 25:15work out their own stuff. Yeah.
- 25:17And when they can figure out going back to figuring out that
- 25:21they have it within them. Yes, do.
- 25:23That. Yes.
- 25:25That's where the magic really is.
- 25:27It is. So magical.
- 25:29I I love that word. Yes, it is so magical.
- 25:33Yeah, and. They get this aha.
- 25:36Yeah, yeah, that aha moment so good.
- 25:38Well, I think another thing too, we quit apologizing for showing
- 25:42up and taking up in a room and and being seen, being heard,
- 25:47being known. That's part of that.
- 25:49As I I mentor and advise a group of women at at Fresno State
- 25:56University and one of the in the College of Business, a group of
- 25:59students. And one of the things I tell
- 26:01them I'm like, right up the gate, let's let's get rid of any
- 26:07habits you have about entering a room and starting a sentence
- 26:10with I'm sorry, but no, because you're just going to get rid of
- 26:16that part of the sentence and just start with professor, I
- 26:20have a question or going into your boss.
- 26:23I, I need some clarity. Not Oh, I'm sorry, but I need
- 26:26some clarity. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 26:28Take up your time. No, they're there for you to
- 26:31take up their time. Exactly, exactly.
- 26:36So I think that's such a big piece of it.
- 26:37And you have such a great handle on that.
- 26:39And I think you had a hand. It seems like you've had a
- 26:42handle on that for much of your life because I think when you're
- 26:45that self aware, you know, you don't need to apologize for
- 26:49that. I was unapologetic for, you
- 26:56know, a good part of my adulthood.
- 26:58And then I learned as I became more public, that to soften it.
- 27:03So I don't. Walk into a room and say I'm
- 27:06sorry, I will say excuse me or I need or may I, etcetera.
- 27:13So I've learned to soften it, though I'm not apologetic at all
- 27:18for being who I am. Yeah.
- 27:20Not at all. Clear and kind can go together,
- 27:24like unapologetic and kind can go together.
- 27:27I think sometimes when people hear the word unapologetic, it
- 27:30sounds very. Brutal.
- 27:32Out there and propose. Yeah.
- 27:36Not walking into walk through a wall and take it down.
- 27:43It doesn't. No.
- 27:43It's being comfortable and content in in your own skin.
- 27:49Having peace with who you are. Walking into a room confidently
- 27:53but kindly. You don't have to run through a
- 27:56door and knock everybody down but you walk and you know I love
- 28:00the examples you like. Excuse me.
- 28:02Can I have a moment of your time?
- 28:04Pardon me. I got a question real quick.
- 28:06You know those kinds of things. That's a great example.
- 28:09Thanks. So much for sharing that.
- 28:10That was really good because yeah, I think we have to like, I
- 28:13think sometimes the word boundaries and unapologetic feel
- 28:16very in your face and they don't have to be.
- 28:21There's a way to do this. And what I think that when you
- 28:24really feel empowered and, and who you are, you do understand
- 28:29or become to understand how to navigate that in a way that is
- 28:33not abrasive that it is. And I think when you're first
- 28:36learning how to show up that way, sometimes we err on the
- 28:40other side too far. Like, by golly, I'm not going to
- 28:42apologize for anything anymore. It's like, all right, We also
- 28:47need to be able to have conversations with people and,
- 28:50and work through conflict. And, you know, so I think that,
- 28:53yeah, that that way to do it in a very calming, not doesn't have
- 29:00to be abrasive, it doesn't have to be aggressive.
- 29:04You can be an assertive and kind and polite all in the same
- 29:08moment. Yeah.
- 29:08Absolutely. Yeah.
- 29:10So good. All right, We, we touched on
- 29:12this already and you hit on it so well on the self-care piece,
- 29:17but the importance of setting and coming back to your why and
- 29:21your values and everything you do.
- 29:24Talk to me more about you have a really great understanding of
- 29:28that and you've and you caught on to that early.
- 29:31Talk to me about that journey with that and how you help other
- 29:34people with that as well. Well.
- 29:41A lot of clients who are depressed, they a common symptom
- 29:47is they're not motivated. They are unmotivated to even get
- 29:51up and shower or go to work that day or eat the right foods for
- 29:57them. And the assumption is that
- 30:02motivation means I have to have energy and excitement to do this
- 30:06task every time. Oh yeah.
- 30:09No, no. Motivation is the result you
- 30:13seek. So if I want to keep food on my
- 30:19table and a roof over my head, then I have to wake up and go to
- 30:22work. I really don't want to.
- 30:25I like to sleep in and yeah, I go play tennis all day.
- 30:31That's what I want to do though, in order to have that security
- 30:36in my lifestyle. Yeah, I am required to get up
- 30:40even on the days where I don't feel like it.
- 30:43So motivation is the result. It's not the energy and
- 30:45excitement to do that particular task.
- 30:48The motivation is how this task will lead me there.
- 30:51And so that's what I I also work with clients on that and that's
- 30:57how I keep myself on task. Yeah, I'd love that.
- 31:01That's great. I'd love the way you shifted
- 31:04that of like, no, I there, I don't know anybody.
- 31:08Well, there's a few people, there's a few morning people out
- 31:10there, but there's a lot of people that don't want to get up
- 31:14at 5:00 or 5:30 in the morning, you know, to get.
- 31:18But they also understand that in order to meet this expectation
- 31:22they have for their life or this value that they have or they're
- 31:26why behind wanting to travel or those things that nourish them
- 31:31playing tennis, you know, having, you know, going, being
- 31:34able to have time or a membership or a place where you
- 31:37can go do that. They've got, you know, and they
- 31:39understand. OK, I've I've identified my why
- 31:43for this. I've identified the values of
- 31:45things that I cherish around it. So in order to access those,
- 31:49this piece here is necessary. Even on the day where I don't
- 31:54want to do it. Doesn't mean I don't love doing
- 31:56it. I just.
- 31:57But maybe I don't want to get up at 5:30.
- 31:59But I know if I don't, it sets her trajectory for the rest of
- 32:03my day. That's going to throw everything
- 32:05off. Yes, and even those tasks that
- 32:08are mundane and boring. Yeah, they.
- 32:11Are required to your goal to get you what you desire?
- 32:16I mean, I have AI. It's getting better now though.
- 32:19I've had a lot of GI issues and I've had a a strict diet for
- 32:24years and I would have to be very careful about what I ate
- 32:32and ask when I ate out what's exactly in it.
- 32:35I take forever in the grocery stores 'cause I read every label
- 32:38is if it's a new product for me. And so to be motivated to do
- 32:43those things that are time consuming and uninteresting,
- 32:49yeah, I, I, I'm motivated by, I don't want to suffer physically
- 32:55by just buying what's easiest and what's most convenient.
- 32:59Right. So taking those steps to read
- 33:02the labels and ask questions enables me to, you know,
- 33:06minimize my GI distress. So I'm motivated by the result
- 33:11of not suffering because the suffering.
- 33:13Is awful, yes, absolutely miserable.
- 33:16You value your health and how you want to feel.
- 33:20I love that shift of the result piece.
- 33:23That's a really great way to look at that.
- 33:24Thank you so much for that. That's really good.
- 33:26All right, living out of your own expectations versus others,
- 33:31I want to go back to an example you gave earlier.
- 33:34You talked about at 15 where you started saying no, there was an
- 33:37expectation by the older siblings.
- 33:40She's old enough now to babysit the kids.
- 33:42Of course she'll do it. And you're like, no, no, no, no,
- 33:47no here I am not openly open season on my calendar all the
- 33:52time. I have an expectation of
- 33:54experiences I want to have in my life that exists outside of
- 33:59babysitting y'all's children. So I think that's a great
- 34:05example of you communicated early on an expectation and a
- 34:09boundary and those things, you know, really our values are why,
- 34:13our expectations, our boundaries are self-care.
- 34:15They're all intertwined and they all inform each other.
- 34:19You talked about, you know already how the you know the why
- 34:22and the self-care. We're connected and they're all
- 34:23intertwined. Talk to me about other areas in
- 34:27your life where this has really been important for you and also
- 34:33how you help other people with this.
- 34:35Because there's so many people that need help, that go to
- 34:39therapy, that need that support. So many times are living out of
- 34:44everyone else's expectations but their own.
- 34:48And they don't even realize it. They don't even, they haven't
- 34:51even stopped to consider you're on this path.
- 34:56Is this a path you chose? Is this the path someone else
- 34:59expected of you to? Are you people pleasing?
- 35:02I mean, there's so many things that go into it.
- 35:05Yes, yes, there. There are so many pieces.
- 35:08Let me start by saying beware of should.
- 35:15Should statements are a cognitive distortion, an
- 35:20absolute twist of reality? Should statements.
- 35:24I consider them the internalized expectations and standards of
- 35:30other people. And the problem with that is
- 35:34their standards and expectations may not align with who you are
- 35:39as an individual, your goals, your desires, your talents, your
- 35:44innate gifts and talents. And so if there is that
- 35:47misalignment and you shoot yourself to death, you will
- 35:51likely experience a lot of anxiety and depression, maybe
- 35:55some addictive behaviors, maybe some self harm.
- 35:59So beware of should. And the reframe I work with
- 36:04clients on is when you catch yourself should in on yourself,
- 36:10replace the word should with could.
- 36:15I, I should go to school? I could go to school. 1 is this
- 36:21and 1 is this. And with with should statements
- 36:25there, there are no choices. Either this way or something's
- 36:30wrong with you. Yeah.
- 36:33Could is, oh, look at all these different options and
- 36:36possibilities. That's the empowering part.
- 36:39So that's how I work with clients on that.
- 36:42For myself, it was being willing to weather the storms of
- 36:48criticisms for not being who I was told to be, for not being
- 36:53the way you should be. Why are you so you just you OK?
- 36:59I'm sorry you like it. I'm doing it.
- 37:02And I'm going to continue to be this way because this is who I'm
- 37:06comfortable with when I'm alone. Yeah.
- 37:09When I look in the mirror, that's more important to me than
- 37:13what you think. And so it's, it's, it's adopting
- 37:16that posture and of understanding and again,
- 37:20self-awareness. And it will take some time and
- 37:23some reflection to do this. And it's it's about
- 37:27understanding what enhances your life, what moves you closer to
- 37:31those goals and desires and the expression of your gifts and
- 37:35talents. And should statements don't do
- 37:38that? Yeah.
- 37:39They don't do that. They don't.
- 37:41I love how you just shipped a couple of letters in a word and
- 37:46it comes it goes from being you feel stuck and imprisoned by to
- 37:51a world of choices and that slight shift.
- 37:54What does that does? And also the acknowledgement of
- 38:00so many times when people talk to me about, you know, this
- 38:05framework that I use, walking through these questions with
- 38:08people individually. And if they are, they, they want
- 38:11that magic elixir. And it's like, I'm going to sell
- 38:15you right up front. This is not the magic elixir.
- 38:19You're going to have to be an, a very committed participant in
- 38:26this. It's going to require you to
- 38:29embrace some discomfort that might you might receive from
- 38:33people as you start making shifts that are healthy for you
- 38:38because they're not used to you showing up in that way.
- 38:42A&B, excuse me, it may not serve them anymore and and it may not
- 38:48meet them where they're used to you needing them.
- 38:52So for yourself and for your, you know, making a commitment to
- 38:56yourself upfront, you're no longer going to abandon
- 38:59yourself, but it's not going to come with this like I'm going to
- 39:02do this and everything's going to be better because it's no,
- 39:06that's just, that's not if someone's telling you that
- 39:09they're lying to you, I'm just, you know, because how life
- 39:13works, you have to be an accountable participant.
- 39:17But little shifts like changing shoulds to coulds is a door wide
- 39:24open door that you can walk through and and have a
- 39:28completely different perspective on your situation.
- 39:32Absolutely, absolutely. And they experience the
- 39:38difference immediately sometimes.
- 39:42Yeah, 'cause it's like that light bulb moment, like you
- 39:44said, like a light goes on it. Oh, I never thought about it
- 39:48that way. I didn't realize that was
- 39:50available to me. No one's ever framed it.
- 39:52And I think especially when you grow up in situations where
- 39:55that's not modeled to you, not everybody has the, we're all
- 40:01wired differently and not all of us are able to pick up on the
- 40:04fact that that is not serving them.
- 40:08And I, you know, and instead it's like, well, that's the way
- 40:11they did it. So I guess that's the way.
- 40:12Well, I'll do it. And not stopping to consider.
- 40:17Habit. Is that healthy?
- 40:19Do they look content? Do they seem happy or do they,
- 40:22you know, those kinds of things? So the question is to yourself,
- 40:25why you? Because I remember what used to
- 40:27drive me crazy as a little kid is when you get answers from
- 40:31your parents because I said so, OK, And I caught myself early on
- 40:38in parenthood doing that to my own kids.
- 40:40I'm like, oh, yeah, no, I don't want to do that.
- 40:42I don't want to be that, you know, instead of like the
- 40:45consideration of, you know, impact and, and all those
- 40:49things. So yeah, I love, I love the,
- 40:52the, the should to could. And I love that.
- 40:55Just that reality of being willing to embrace the
- 40:57discomfort, but knowing the honoring yourself at the end,
- 41:02it's, it's worth it and you are worth it.
- 41:05You know I. Think that's and I I can't
- 41:07imagine struggling with who I am on a daily basis.
- 41:13I just the wanting having this internal experience and it it
- 41:19not aligning with what I present as I I just that struggle to me.
- 41:26I, I just, I said no, I don't want to do that.
- 41:29Yeah. So yeah, I'd rather you be upset
- 41:31with me than me be upset with. Myself absolutely and feel that
- 41:35exactly because yeah, absolutely and I think that's I think
- 41:38that's so much of why you and I do what we do in the it's like
- 41:41OK ladies, this doesn't have to be this way people we don't have
- 41:45we have it doesn't have you don't have to exist this way.
- 41:48There's I let let listen to us. We promise there's even exists
- 41:55and honor yourself, yeah. Absolutely.
- 41:58So good, all right, accepting the layered aspects of
- 42:01ourselves, you know, and you mentioned layers earlier, you
- 42:05know, accepting all those pieces and parts of who we are in.
- 42:10This is an area that I struggled with early on.
- 42:13I really had to move from a place of judgment to curiosity
- 42:16about my layers, especially in those seasons of life that I'm
- 42:19like stayed in that relationship way too long, you know, or you
- 42:25know, whatever the case may be. So talk to me about your layers
- 42:29journey. Oh, I'm pretty deep A.
- 42:38Lot of layers there a. Lot of layers there.
- 42:43I I I'll share this story. Growing up in when I was trying
- 42:48to sort out pain and suffering and how humans can be so mean to
- 42:52each other, I was anti competition.
- 42:57I don't understand competition. I don't care who is better and
- 43:00what what. And then I started playing
- 43:02tennis and I realized that I am a very competitive person with
- 43:09my best. Yeah, I'm going to, you know,
- 43:14pick up the the weaknesses and the strengths of the opponent,
- 43:18though. If I have this level of skill,
- 43:21then that's my competition. Yeah.
- 43:25And so the results are the results.
- 43:27And so it it was a real surprise to me how competitive I was.
- 43:31Yeah. And why I resisted that for so
- 43:35long. Yeah.
- 43:38So that was a huge insight into one layer of me.
- 43:45Another layer is I recognize as loving, as kind, as authentic I
- 43:53am, I can be very angry. And when I get to that level of
- 43:59anger with someone, then as I calm, then I detach from that
- 44:06person. So a lot of relationships.
- 44:08And if I reach that level of anger, that's another layer that
- 44:12I, I, I'm not comfortable with it though.
- 44:15Once I'm there, I go with it and then this is the result.
- 44:19I don't want to go there again, so I detach from that situation,
- 44:23from that person emotionally and mentally.
- 44:26So those are interesting layers. I'm like, Oh my gosh, okay.
- 44:33Well, I think you've really spoken to the nuance that exists
- 44:37within us of how we can have these.
- 44:39Like, I'm an intuitive, I pick up the emotions in the room.
- 44:44I see what's happening. I don't under because I see this
- 44:47and feel so much. I don't understand why people
- 44:50hurt each other. But at the same time, when I'm
- 44:52on the tennis court, I want to win, you know?
- 44:57So how do I hold all of that? And I think it's just knowing
- 45:00how to channel it, how to hold it, understanding the spaces and
- 45:04places where it's effective and healthy and where it transfers
- 45:08over into not being healthy. You know, that understanding of
- 45:12like we hear so many narratives as women about anger and so, so
- 45:17many of us have stuffed anger for years and not allowed
- 45:20ourselves to feel it, process it, move through it, notice how
- 45:25other express it, notice how other people impact us, paying
- 45:30attention to our nervous system when we're in certain people's
- 45:34presence and situations. And and so learning how to feel
- 45:39that, move through it, express it, and also recognize when
- 45:42there's a scenario or situation or location or person that
- 45:46continually brings that up in US and be mindful of like, that's
- 45:50not a space that's healthy for me to continually put myself in.
- 45:55I need to be mindful and aware of that.
- 45:58That's not, you know, anger. Small anger was a clue and let
- 46:02me know. Yes.
- 46:06That that was an area that I need to be mindful of, you know,
- 46:10so I think you're refraining that Who is clues.
- 46:14Yes, and you're exactly right. The context does matter.
- 46:19Yeah. I also like how you you became
- 46:21curious about yourself because it's important for us to know
- 46:25what we like, what we dislike, what our triggers are, what our
- 46:28joys are, what our frustrations are, what our locus of control
- 46:33is. So it it it is important to be
- 46:37curious about who you are so you can learn this about yourself
- 46:40and make make the best choices available to you.
- 46:44Yeah, absolutely, Absolutely. So good.
- 46:46So good. All right, in summary, in living
- 46:49out feel, finding empowerment, embracing layers which you you
- 46:53really know how to do, you have you have learned this, you
- 46:58really embody this and how you show up in the world.
- 47:01Talk to me about how this has affected your relation.
- 47:04You're affected. Let me see if I can spit that
- 47:07out. Your relationship with your
- 47:09relationship with yourself, as well as your relationship with
- 47:14other people. Again, my relationship with
- 47:19myself is is is crucial. I am the only person I spend
- 47:2424/7 with, yeah, as is every other human being.
- 47:27And I insist on liking the person I spend the most time
- 47:31with. So it's.
- 47:33Very important, we have to estimate the thousand of that.
- 47:37Yes, yes. And I crack myself up sometimes.
- 47:41It would you know, I could be humorous alone and I I insist on
- 47:47having a healthy relationship with myself and the healthier I
- 47:51am within me, then I can bring my best to others.
- 47:57Yeah. Who are open to it?
- 48:00Those people who provide that warm comforter, emotional
- 48:06comforter for me, I can be available to them, I can help
- 48:11them, I can just listen. I can receive from them with
- 48:16appreciation. So connecting with myself in
- 48:21that way only creates better relationships with other people.
- 48:27Yeah, Anything I want to add to it, it takes the pressure off of
- 48:31relationships being something they were never intended to be.
- 48:35Relationships were never intended to be the thing that
- 48:39makes us happy. Now we can experience joy and
- 48:43contentment and happiness within that, but that comes from us
- 48:48knowing ourselves while valuing us, loving us, having that
- 48:52relationship with ourselves. So we don't need that
- 48:55relationship's a choice. We don't need that relationship.
- 48:59Well, we need we need community as humans.
- 49:02So that's a little bit of a different scientific story, but
- 49:05within this context, we with that relationship is a choice
- 49:10that we surround ourselves with that and it doesn't put pressure
- 49:13on it to be something it was never intended to be.
- 49:17Well, and and and it's not that relationship is my only way of
- 49:24being a healthy human being. No, that relationship I can
- 49:30learn from as I can learn from a different relationship.
- 49:34My life does not depend on that relationship.
- 49:37Yeah, Yeah, it is. We do need relationship,
- 49:41absolutely. Yes, that's a great way of
- 49:43putting that. That's a great way of putting
- 49:45that. Thank you so much for that.
- 49:46That was really good. All right.
- 49:48And we're down to the rapid fire.
- 49:51Name 5 activities that nourish you.
- 49:56Writing. I love to write.
- 49:59I'm much more expressive on paper than I am verbally.
- 50:02I love to laugh. As I said, I crack myself up
- 50:06sometimes. I find humor and joy in some of
- 50:09the smallest things in life, just looking out the window or
- 50:13movie or in conversation. I love tennis and working out.
- 50:19I'll do a variety of cardio type and weight activities.
- 50:24Tennis is the second love of my life.
- 50:26My husband is the first love of my life.
- 50:30Meditation. I meditate every morning and I
- 50:34clocked I think I'm up to 760 consecutive days.
- 50:41Oh wow. In the meditation app, I do it
- 50:43before I get out of bed every morning.
- 50:46Yeah, and. #5 I don't have a number 5, I have like 5 more
- 50:53after. That that's somebody who has a
- 50:57lot of joy and experiences that nourish them.
- 51:02Yes, I I have a variety that I can tap into at different times
- 51:08and for different reasons. Cooking.
- 51:11I love to cook. I'm, I'm not a gourmet cook by
- 51:14any means. Sure.
- 51:15Just the process of it is an expression of love for me.
- 51:20And so I love cooking. OK, oh so good.
- 51:23All right, 5 words on how you want to feel in the next 6
- 51:27months. Lighter.
- 51:31I want to feel more buoyant in my body, in my spirit and
- 51:41socially. The world is heavy for me right
- 51:45now. It's it's, it's a little scary,
- 51:49a lot of scary. And there's I feel a huge weight
- 51:54and so I want to feel lighter in the next 6 months.
- 51:58Yeah, I think that's something a lot of people can connect with
- 52:02right now. Yeah, unfortunately.
- 52:05Yeah, yeah. But if we had to speak it and
- 52:08say it and so that we can, you know, be truthful with ourselves
- 52:13about it and do those things we need to do.
- 52:16I I found that after the first three months of this year, I was
- 52:19just in this hyper vigilant state that I could not the
- 52:22normal things I was doing for myself was not moving right out
- 52:26of it. And so I'm like, I'm going to
- 52:28need more of something right now.
- 52:30And I figured out it was more presence and joy and moments
- 52:36with family and loved ones and spaces that I left.
- 52:40So my husband and I took a couple weekends.
- 52:42We went over to the coast and did a whale watching tour with
- 52:45my sister-in-law and her wife. We went down next weekend and
- 52:50and visited my brother-in-law and spent some time with he and
- 52:53his family. We're going to the mountains
- 52:55next weekend because that really that being that close to nature
- 52:59and having that experience together.
- 53:02And so I think that's important. And I was like, OK, those are
- 53:05the things I need in addition to these practices.
- 53:09So I think you hit on something so important and I want you to
- 53:12get to your other 4 words. But I, I wanted to see that
- 53:15because I think that's a place a lot of us are living right now
- 53:18and really paying attention to that and asking yourself, what
- 53:23are some additional ways I can support myself in this way?
- 53:29Well, and, and I'm, I'm glad you, you shared that because you
- 53:36just expressed another layer of yourself and that's focusing on
- 53:41what you have personal control over.
- 53:44Yeah. And one of the things that gets
- 53:47us so out of sorts socially is that we complain about what's
- 53:54wrong and wait for them to fix it.
- 53:56When you have these individually, we make these
- 54:00choices every day on how we use our energy and our personal
- 54:05resources. And that does contribute to the
- 54:09collective. Now, is it going to be an in a
- 54:12healthy way or an unhealthy way that's to be seen?
- 54:16So what you did was you boiled it down like, Oh my God, and
- 54:19then boiled it down to what nourished you.
- 54:22I love that. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:25I love that. Thank you.
- 54:27It's it's, and it took a few months, like it wasn't like
- 54:30immediate, like I really had to sit and get curious and keep,
- 54:35man, I tried this not working, tried this not working, you
- 54:38know, not, not moving the needle here.
- 54:41And I was finally able to like, it just took some time and, and
- 54:46my husband and I both that first weekend where we tapped into it.
- 54:49We're like, we need more of this.
- 54:51This, this is the elixir that's going to support us and this is
- 54:56something that we can control that in a in a world that feels
- 55:01like very out of control in so many.
- 55:04Ways, yes. Yeah, all right.
- 55:09Four other words. I I want to feel a deeper
- 55:17alignment with my body, mind and my spirit.
- 55:24I think there is another part of me that needs to be brought into
- 55:33my existence. And so I want to deepen that and
- 55:38and just experience that part of me that is more connected to the
- 55:46source. That's really good.
- 55:52I definitely want to feel more safety.
- 55:58Yeah. I'm very comfortable with who I
- 56:01am. Yeah.
- 56:03Others are not. There's just no way to dance
- 56:06around it. There's no way to dance around
- 56:09that. So I just, I, I would love to
- 56:11have the experience of being completely free me in any
- 56:18context at any time. Yeah, in any space.
- 56:23Any space? Yes.
- 56:25Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And I, I, I want to feel more
- 56:32nourished. I want every cell, every fiber,
- 56:41every organ, every hair just to thrive and just have that
- 56:52nourishment of being. Not so much.
- 56:56Full. Satiated.
- 57:00Satisfied. Yeah, that's a good word.
- 57:05I mean, it's a great, like, that's a really great metaphor
- 57:07for that. Not even metaphor, but I don't
- 57:09know. But yeah, that's a great way to
- 57:11describe that. I love that.
- 57:13Oh my gosh, Glenn, so good. I don't know, I lost track of
- 57:18how many words were on it. More sorry.
- 57:26I actually would love to experience more appreciation
- 57:29while you and I, we don't really do what we do for accolades.
- 57:33Yeah. It would be nice if it were more
- 57:37welcomed. Yeah.
- 57:40Because it there's not a lot of bling to it, there's not a lot
- 57:44of glitz and glamour or riches. Yet I would love a deeper level
- 57:49of appreciation for what we bring to humanity.
- 57:54Yeah. And people to actually use it,
- 57:57utilize it. Yeah, I think that you hit on
- 58:01the utilization piece like it's, it's hard when you know you have
- 58:09shared something that if people are willing to take hold of it
- 58:14can help them and they won't do it and they won't do it.
- 58:20And you have to release the fact that you're not responsible for
- 58:25what they choose to do. All you can do is share that.
- 58:30And but that can be so frustrating.
- 58:33It can be, so it can. Be frustrating, especially when
- 58:35they come back with the same complaint.
- 58:37Yeah. And, and the same story.
- 58:42Yeah, let's rewrite the story. Let's take different actions.
- 58:47So yeah, you, you hit it on the head.
- 58:49We we can't. That's a bad, that's a mental
- 58:52boundary and emotional boundary that we can't be attached to the
- 58:55outcome of. Sharing.
- 58:57What we know and our experiences.
- 59:00Yet it it it I hope that people will use it.
- 59:10Yeah. To live better in their lives.
- 59:14Yeah, just be the healthiest version of yourself that's
- 59:16possible, you know? Yeah, I think that could that
- 59:21people would be willing to do that.
- 59:22We could see a big shift in the world.
- 59:24I mean, that alone, if we weren't operating from this,
- 59:28these traumatic, unprocessed places that are so deeply rooted
- 59:33in so many systems and cultures and narratives.
- 59:37And that's a whole other thing. But yeah, but it does.
- 59:40And not to simplify it, but it really does come down to each
- 59:43one of us being willing to go on the journey and make the choices
- 59:47that are healthiest for us. And that, fortunately, is harder
- 59:53than it sounds for so many people.
- 59:56But it doesn't have to be. And I think that's where it's
- 59:59like, we've done it. It's OK with you.
- 1:00:02I promise. I promise.
- 1:00:03It's perfect. It is so doable.
- 1:00:07So doable. Yeah.
- 1:00:08Oh, gosh. So good.
- 1:00:10Oh, Glenn. So good.
- 1:00:11So good. We could talk forever.
- 1:00:13So many good. Nuggets today, so much good

- 1:01:50If you're having a hard time executing those things that you
- 1:01:53know, nourish of you get to the why, why this is important.

- 1:02:52it's going to pile up and be really stinky.
- 1:02:55Start there. Start there.
