- 0:05What tailgating taught me about marriage?
- 0:07Have you ever noticed how often people
- 0:09do the exact opposite of what would actually get them what they want?
- 0:12And most continue the counterproductive behavior, seemingly unaware of the situation.
- 0:17Let me use tailgating as an example.
- 0:20When we drive into town, we travel 10 miles on a busy two-lane highway with
- 0:24one very short passing lane.
- 0:26Curves and hills limit areas marked as safe to pass, and traffic usually makes
- 0:30that impossible anyway.
- 0:32The speed limit is 60 miles an hour. At least half the folks driving it want
- 0:36to go 65 or faster, and about 10% don't want to go any faster than 50.
- 0:42So there's a lot of tailgating.
- 0:44Some of it is stupidly close.
- 0:46I've never seen tailgating speed someone up. I have seen it result in people going even slower.
- 0:51I generally maintain two seconds between myself and the car ahead,
- 0:55even if they are going slow, as I was taught all those years ago in driver's ed.
- 1:00Then recently, I decided to back off a bit more.
- 1:03Amazingly, the guy in front of me sped up. I tried this several more times,
- 1:08and about half the time it results in better speed.
- 1:10Not always up to the speed limit, but noticeably faster.
- 1:14No one likes to be pushed. Be it intentional or subconscious,
- 1:17some drivers react to being pushed by slowing down, and some react to be given
- 1:21a bit of space by increasing their speed.
- 1:24I conclude that tailgating the driver in front of you will not make them go
- 1:27faster and may cause them to slow down.
- 1:30Pushing them, as it were, is counterproductive to your goal.
- 1:33Yet I see people do that almost every time I drive to town.
- 1:37Perhaps being rude and aggressive makes the drivers feel better,
- 1:40but at a steep cost. Several times a year, it results in a crash that takes multiple lives.
- 1:45With all that as background, let me ask you this. Do you think pushing your
- 1:50spouse is likely to get you what you want?
- 1:52Give them some space and see what happens.
- 1:55Like drivers who tailgate, you may think pushing your spouse will somehow help.
- 1:59If this has never happened, it's time to find a new tactic.
- 2:02This is Paul, and tailgating your spouse is not doing marriage well.
