- 0:00Do you ever feel like motherhood has made you second guess yourself more than you ever
- 0:08have before?
- 0:10Like you can remember a time you felt way more secure and more grounded and more confident
- 0:17in who you were, but now you're overthinking everything.
- 0:21You're comparing yourself constantly.
- 0:24You're wondering if you're doing enough.
- 0:26You always feel behind and you feel pressure to do motherhood like everyone else and slowly
- 0:33without even realizing comparison is starting to steal and eat away at your confidence because
- 0:42really confidence was never supposed to come from becoming like somebody else.
- 0:49It comes from the understanding of who you are already in Christ.
- 0:55So moms, you are not alone.
- 0:57This episode is going to really help unpack what it is we can do to get our confidence
- 1:03back.
- 1:06If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much and wondering why peace still feels
- 1:11so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 1:15Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser and your boundaries coach.
- 1:20Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries and get clear on
- 1:26what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer and more
- 1:31satisfying.
- 1:32So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms catch my breath and get into this next episode.
- 1:42Welcome back to healthy boundaries for moms.
- 1:46Today we are talking about why so many moms are losing confidence and how comparison,
- 1:54people pleasing, social media is constantly getting us to look sideways at everyone else.
- 2:03And it's quietly pulling us away from our peace and our purpose and identity because
- 2:11culture, it's constantly telling us, right?
- 2:15It's talking to us.
- 2:16It says things like, be more like her and parent just like her.
- 2:21Why can't you organize like her, achieve like her?
- 2:25Why don't you look like her and look at her gorgeous, balanced life, right?
- 2:33But God never designed the body of Christ to all function the same way.
- 2:40And honestly, a healthy body doesn't compete with itself, does it?
- 2:47So we're going to first talk about how comparison is stealing and eating away at our confidence
- 2:56because comparison trains our brain to focus on what's missing instead of what is meaningful
- 3:05to us.
- 3:06And social media, well, it takes like a magnifying glass to all of this consistently and constantly,
- 3:14right?
- 3:15We were never meant to mentally process hundreds of other mothers' lives.
- 3:21We're seeing them every day, right?
- 3:23On Facebook, on Pinterest, on Instagram, we're seeing that inside of their homes, we see
- 3:29their beautiful schedules, in their amazing bodies, how great they are at their parenting,
- 3:36or maybe their businesses, maybe the way they clean their home, or their amazing meal prep.
- 3:44Can we just talk about the meal prep?
- 3:47It's exhausting sometimes to watch.
- 3:49How about their homeschool routines, or friendships, or their amazing, beautiful postcard vacations?
- 3:59Okay, and research continues to show how damaging constantly comparing can be.
- 4:07And studies have linked social comparison with lower self-esteem, increased anxiety,
- 4:16depressive symptoms, lower life satisfaction, distraction, and mental overload.
- 4:24That sounds horrible, right?
- 4:27One survey found 50% of people reported lower self-esteem from comparing themselves online.
- 4:3642% reported anxiety, and 34% reported feeling like a failure.
- 4:43So are we surprised, moms, that our confidence is getting attacked?
- 4:50So moms don't really need a study to know this is happening.
- 4:55We kind of know this, right, because we can feel it.
- 4:58We can get off social media, and all of a sudden, you look around, and your house feels
- 5:05inadequate.
- 5:06Like it's not good enough.
- 5:07It was a second ago, but right now, after seeing Susie's house, not so good.
- 5:12How about your parenting is starting to feel inadequate?
- 5:16You saw someone else on how amazing they're doing with their kids, and now your schedule
- 5:23starts to feel inadequate.
- 5:25It's not full enough.
- 5:26You don't have your kids and enough things.
- 5:28Your body starts to feel inadequate.
- 5:30Like how come she's more toned than me, or how come she's smaller than me?
- 5:35And your life just feels a little bit behind because comparison takes focus off of your
- 5:42life, and it puts it on someone else's.
- 5:47And it begins to take away and steal from your confidence because you cannot fully run
- 5:54your race while you're looking over and studying someone else's lane, right?
- 6:01And scripture speaks directly to this.
- 6:03In 2 Corinthians 10 12, Paul says, when they measure themselves by themselves and compare
- 6:10themselves with themselves, they are not wise because comparison clouds out wisdom because
- 6:18it's really disconnecting us from actual truth.
- 6:24So here's the second part.
- 6:28When we step out of our own lane, and trust me, I have done this many times.
- 6:34I remember just being around some moms.
- 6:38These are when my kids were real little, and they were really into healthy living.
- 6:44Like when I say healthy living, I mean like next level healthy living.
- 6:48Everything was organic.
- 6:50They went to the farmer's market.
- 6:52They would buy a cow and have it, you know, cut up at the meat market, and they made their
- 6:57own household cleaners.
- 6:59They made their own laundry detergent people, and I wanted to be just like them.
- 7:05And I did.
- 7:06For a time, I bought into all that.
- 7:08I made my own laundry detergent.
- 7:10I made my own cleaners.
- 7:12And where it went south was when I made my own toothpaste.
- 7:17And my husband, still to this day, gives me a hard time about it because I made the toothpaste
- 7:24with coconut oil.
- 7:25And so it left a film on his mouth, like the opposite of what it should have done.
- 7:32But the point is, is like there's nothing wrong with the moms who love that kind of
- 7:36lifestyle.
- 7:37And that probably fit their priorities and their strengths, their personalities, and
- 7:43things like that.
- 7:44Me trying to force myself into their lane instead of staying focused on my own strengths
- 7:51and priorities, guys, it just created stress and pressure that I didn't need in greasy
- 7:58toothpaste, right?
- 8:01And I think we do this like all the time as moms.
- 8:05We see someone thriving over there in an area, and so then we say, oh, I should be doing
- 8:10that too.
- 8:11But comparison is pulling us away from the actual life that God has designed for us.
- 8:19So it's distracting us.
- 8:22So in the third part, God designed people differently on purpose.
- 8:30So I think one of the clearest pictures where this plays out in the Bible is the body of
- 8:35Christ.
- 8:36So in first Corinthians 12, scripture talks about how the body has many parts with different
- 8:43functions.
- 8:44Like the eye isn't the ear, the hand obviously is not the foot.
- 8:50And scripture is literally asking, if the whole body were an eye, where would, where
- 8:55would we hear?
- 8:56Right?
- 8:57Where would the hearing be?
- 8:59God intentionally designed diversity of our giftings.
- 9:04It's on purpose.
- 9:06He wanted us all to have different personalities, different strengths, different capacities
- 9:11and ways that we mother.
- 9:14Different children.
- 9:15Our children are different, right?
- 9:17And there's different seasons that we are in in our life.
- 9:21And honestly, we can understand this with our children, right?
- 9:25We would never look over at, you know, our daughter, our son and be like, why can't you
- 9:30be more like your sibling?
- 9:32Because we understand they're different.
- 9:35They're completely different with different gifts and different struggles and different
- 9:40wiring and personalities.
- 9:42But we do this.
- 9:43We turn around and speak to ourselves like that way constantly.
- 9:48We constantly say to ourselves, why can't you be more organized or patient like her?
- 9:54Why can't you be more outgoing and disciplined?
- 9:58Why are you not more creative or productive?
- 10:00And eventually comparison creates a type of self-rejection and it doesn't inspire or
- 10:10motivate us to steward what God has already given us.
- 10:15So in the fourth part, I want to talk about how comparison creates strife and dissatisfaction.
- 10:24Because in truth, comparison is the enemy, right, of contentment and satisfaction.
- 10:32The enemy loves for us to look outside of our lives and compare because it creates this
- 10:38internal chaos and disorder.
- 10:41So in James 3.16, it says, for where jealousy and selfish ambition exists, there will be
- 10:49disorder.
- 10:50So the Bible's already warning us about this.
- 10:52And honestly, we know, we see it.
- 10:54Disorder shows up in our mind.
- 10:56It shows up in our emotions.
- 10:59Because comparison is creating chaos, like insecurity, it's, it's causing us to strive
- 11:05and it's causing us to have resentment towards those people that are different and doing
- 11:11things we perceive better than us.
- 11:14It creates this pressure that didn't exist.
- 11:17We're distracted.
- 11:18We're dissatisfied.
- 11:20Now we have anxiety and we are overthinking everything, right?
- 11:25And you cannot cultivate gratitude while you're obsessing over someone else's life.
- 11:32And sometimes comparison even keeps us from growing in the areas that God had in mind.
- 11:39Like He's gifted us in a certain kind of way.
- 11:42And we're so busy looking over at someone else's strengths and covening what they have
- 11:48that we're not even growing what's important in our own lives.
- 11:53And the self-rejection, it's not producing any peace, right?
- 11:59Because some moms, they're naturally structured.
- 12:02It comes easy to them.
- 12:04And some are extroverted.
- 12:06They're very relational.
- 12:08And that comes natural.
- 12:09Some are creative.
- 12:11And some are just, again, naturally calm under pressure.
- 12:15Some are creative to be very nurturing mothers.
- 12:19But different doesn't mean deficient because the goal was never for all of us to be the
- 12:25same.
- 12:27The goal was faithfulness, that we were faithful to the ways that God has gifted us.
- 12:33So let's talk about where confidence comes from.
- 12:38It comes from our identity in Christ.
- 12:42So here's the truth comparison that makes us forget.
- 12:46Your value was already settled when Jesus Christ was on the cross because that gave
- 12:54you worth, inherent worth.
- 12:57And it also meant that you already belong and you are already loved and cherished because
- 13:03God could not love you more than He loves you right now.
- 13:07In Psalm 139, it says, we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
- 13:13And Ephesians 2 10 says, we are God's workmanship.
- 13:17So we were designed intentionally.
- 13:19And confidence doesn't come from doing better than everyone else around you.
- 13:24Confidence is coming from trusting that God created you on purpose, with purpose.
- 13:31You do not have to become someone else.
- 13:34You do not have to be more and better than what you already are because God created you
- 13:40to be exactly who you are.
- 13:42It wasn't an accident.
- 13:43So please hear that.
- 13:46So how do we come up with some simple ways to start rebuilding this confidence?
- 13:52So these are some strategies.
- 13:54Our first strategy is reduce comparison exposure.
- 13:58So that means we are going to unfollow accounts that constantly trigger our insecurity because
- 14:05you can't protect your contentment when you're constantly consuming comparison.
- 14:12Okay, here's a number two strategy.
- 14:17Clarify your priorities.
- 14:18So I want you to ask, what has God actually asked me to steward in this season?
- 14:25Because clarity will also help you reduce comparison.
- 14:29So here's a third strategy.
- 14:31Invest in your strengths.
- 14:33Stop demanding yourself to have mastery in every area.
- 14:37That is what is causing you to lose your confidence.
- 14:41We need to steward the gifts that God actually gave you.
- 14:46You, not other people.
- 14:48Okay.
- 14:49All right, here's our fourth strategy.
- 14:51Practice gratitude intentionally because gratitude brings you back into your real life instead
- 14:58of constantly chasing and looking at other people's lives.
- 15:02And it helps you to feel that contentment that you're looking for.
- 15:06And number five, protect your mental focus.
- 15:10Boundaries will help you protect what God actually asked you to carry.
- 15:16Okay.
- 15:17Number six, replace comparison thoughts with truth.
- 15:22So instead of you thinking something like, why can't I just be like her?
- 15:26Or why can't I be a better mom like her?
- 15:30Okay.
- 15:31So that's the fourth strategy.
- 15:33And if you don't want to be like her, you should try.
- 15:36God intentionally designed us differently, and that is okay.
- 15:41So in closing, friends, comparison is stealing confidence from so many moms today.
- 15:49And the enemy doesn't always need to destroy your calling.
- 15:54You don't need to become somebody else to have value, and you don't need to perform
- 16:01to get your worth.
- 16:03And lastly, you do not need to mother exactly like another woman to be faithful.
- 16:10Because the truth is the body of Christ was never designed to be the same.
- 16:15So moms, let's stay in our lane.
- 16:19Let's protect our peace.
- 16:21Let's steward our gifts and faithfully walk out this life that God has uniquely designed
- 16:28for us.
