- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yor
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it. She's on the Money. She's on
- 0:36Speaker 2: the Money. Hello and welcome to She's on the Money
- 1:00Speaker 2: podcast that makes personal finance fun, especially on Fridays. It's
- 1:04Speaker 2: our favorite day of the week today because we get
- 1:07Speaker 2: the team together and celebrate you our incredible She's on
- 1:10Speaker 2: the Money community today, mister Gorici's going to be sharing
- 1:13Speaker 2: our favorite money wins. Our co host Beck is going
- 1:17Speaker 2: to be sharing her favorite broke tips, and we're going
- 1:20Speaker 2: to be helping to answer a cheeky money dilemma which
- 1:23Speaker 2: is all about navigating a mortgage when you're a sex
- 1:25Speaker 2: worker and something that you're leading into our dms about
- 1:27Speaker 2: this week is the fallout of falling victim for Fomo spending,
- 1:31Speaker 2: which I think everyone at this stable can relate to.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Let's be honest and man, Bin done that my friends.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Before we get there, though, we have started reading out
- 1:41Speaker 2: our favorite five star reviews on the podcast. Beck, what
- 1:46Speaker 2: was your favorite five star review that you saw in
- 1:49Speaker 2: our reviews this week? Cool? Okay?
- 1:51Speaker 3: So this one comes from Nat. She says, honestly, love
- 1:54Speaker 3: this party has taught me so much about finance, helped
- 1:57Speaker 3: me build confidence when making financial decisions.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And then the She's on Money.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Team honestly feel like girlfriends and your own circle of mates.
- 2:05Speaker 3: We are your friends, so sweet.
- 2:07Speaker 2: We are just friends who haven't met yet. Of course
- 2:09Speaker 2: that's really cute.
- 2:12Speaker 4: My one this week is from Fee, who said I've
- 2:14Speaker 4: listened to almost every episode and I'm still loving it
- 2:16Speaker 4: and learning new things every time. It has absolutely inspired
- 2:20Speaker 4: me to make so many positive changes. Over the years,
- 2:23Speaker 4: the podcast has evolved and kept fresh. The current format
- 2:26Speaker 4: is the perfect balance. I love the controversial opinions on
- 2:29Speaker 4: topics and the differing viewpoints of the team, especially Beck.
- 2:33Speaker 4: More Beck airtime. Please, Oh my god, Oh my.
- 2:37Speaker 2: God, that has literally made my heart race. You are
- 2:41Speaker 2: so cute today warning you deserve a good day today too,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Thank you. I love it all right. So I don't
- 2:48Speaker 2: have a name for this one because the person who
- 2:51Speaker 2: wrote in actually has a username that is binary code,
- 2:53Speaker 2: which I really like, and I think what I'm going
- 2:56Speaker 2: to do is translate that later. But I think they're sneaky.
- 3:01Speaker 2: So here's the review. Are you ready? It's so cute.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I started listening about a year ago, and within just
- 3:06Speaker 2: one year, the main difference it made was the confidence
- 3:09Speaker 2: in my ability to change my financial habits. I had
- 3:11Speaker 2: a mental block and was avoiding the topic of finances
- 3:14Speaker 2: because I'm used to being a smarty pants at everything
- 3:17Speaker 2: else loll. I felt embarrassed that I had this gap
- 3:20Speaker 2: in my knowledge, and I thought it was just that
- 3:22Speaker 2: I didn't have the brain for financial stuff. Boy was
- 3:25Speaker 2: I wrong. Because of the WayV and the team have
- 3:28Speaker 2: made this content so approachable and relatable, I've been able
- 3:31Speaker 2: to self reflect on my money story and improve my habits,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and now I'm in a financially secure and resilient place.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I've even passed on the info to my teen nieces
- 3:40Speaker 2: and nephews and they've been able to set themselves up
- 3:43Speaker 2: so well, right from the age of fifteen when they
- 3:46Speaker 2: got their first jobs. You've done wonders for my whole family.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The impact is just going to multiply now. I mainly
- 3:53Speaker 2: just listen because I like surrounding myself with positive energy
- 3:56Speaker 2: and I love how you all interact and relate to
- 3:58Speaker 2: each other. It's just so that's awesome. Thank you for everything.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Is really nice. Lot, Yeah, that's really sweet. Be did
- 4:06Speaker 2: you write that? Yes? I love it. I feel like
- 4:11Speaker 2: it has been such a good week reading through all
- 4:14Speaker 2: the positive reviews, like making finance fun is literally my
- 4:17Speaker 2: favorite thing ever. But you know what else is my favorite?
- 4:20Speaker 2: The community obviously, Like this community is literally only cool
- 4:25Speaker 2: because of them. So miss jessic Ricci. When it comes
- 4:27Speaker 2: to money, wins and confessions, what are you bringing to
- 4:29Speaker 2: the table?
- 4:30Speaker 4: Alrighty, first, when this week I have comes from Sammy
- 4:33Speaker 4: who said she canceled her subscription to the Flow app
- 4:36Speaker 4: after the free trial had concluded, and responded saying that
- 4:39Speaker 4: it was out of her budget because it's about one
- 4:41Speaker 4: hundred and twenty bucks a year. Yeah, it does get
- 4:42Speaker 4: spano a bit expensive. However, Flow came back and offered
- 4:46Speaker 4: her an annual subscription for twenty bucks. No, they did
- 4:50Speaker 4: kind Yeah, so that I feel like is incredible.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And Flow is going to be like, why are you
- 4:55Speaker 2: reading this on the podcast? We have this influx of
- 4:59Speaker 2: people emailing well, I mean flow, money, isn't it? Flow?
- 5:03Speaker 2: You're probably going to get some new clients out of this.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Absolutely flow too, So I get it. I like it.
- 5:08Speaker 4: There you go next, I've got no money you win
- 5:10Speaker 4: from Emily. It's a good it's a money needed, a
- 5:12Speaker 4: good little fyi. Emily said she's been stocking up when
- 5:16Speaker 4: period and general hygiene products are on half priced hail
- 5:20Speaker 4: from chemists and the supermarkets. How we've spoken about how
- 5:23Speaker 4: they run on that annual cycle because the Share the
- 5:25Speaker 4: Dignity Drive is coming, yes, which is something that I
- 5:28Speaker 4: know that we've all donated to before. If if you
- 5:30Speaker 4: don't know Share the Dignity too, maundif I shout them
- 5:32Speaker 4: out quickly, of course, I don't mind if you don't know.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Share the Dignity are a great organization. They provide period
- 5:39Speaker 4: and healthcare products to women who need it. Obviously, cost
- 5:42Speaker 4: of living is hitting people really really hard. The drive
- 5:44Speaker 4: starts in November, so what Emily's done is she's getting
- 5:47Speaker 4: in early. She's stockpiling half price and putting it aside
- 5:51Speaker 4: so she can then donate it once the drive starts.
- 5:53Speaker 2: That's really sweet.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I know that we're all struck for cash, but if
- 5:55Speaker 4: you do want to contribute, you've got a little bit
- 5:57Speaker 4: of extra room in your budget. Maybe you want to
- 5:59Speaker 4: spend your flybysts or your every day Rewards points on some.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Everyday rewards points would be perfect for that. And when
- 6:05Speaker 2: I was going through the Woolies checkout the other day,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I scanned my card and it was like, do you
- 6:08Speaker 2: want to use your ten percent off on this purchase?
- 6:10Speaker 2: And I was like, no, one must save it for
- 6:12Speaker 2: a bigger purchase. But maybe that's when you save an
- 6:15Speaker 2: extra ten percent off. Yeah, double down on the disc.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Your self control is really something like i'd.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Be hitting.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Off now when my like total is like forty dollars.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I want ten percent off when I'm at the supermarket
- 6:28Speaker 2: spending one hundred and eighty bucks. Yeahs've got to be
- 6:30Speaker 2: You've got to be smart about totally.
- 6:33Speaker 4: So a great little reminder and a very smart idea
- 6:35Speaker 4: from our friend Emily. Next, I've got a money loss
- 6:38Speaker 4: and a money win from Melissa Money lost her fridge
- 6:40Speaker 4: carked it over the weekend rip. Oh there's so expensive,
- 6:44Speaker 4: so annoyed, and she lost all the food in the
- 6:46Speaker 4: fridge and freezer to spend one point three k on
- 6:49Speaker 4: a new one, she said, money Win. Though always asked
- 6:52Speaker 4: for a deal, the worst they can say is no.
- 6:54Speaker 4: They gave her an extra hundred bucks off because she
- 6:56Speaker 4: asked them if they could, and they said yes, and
- 6:59Speaker 4: then they got ten percent back on the total price
- 7:01Speaker 4: through promotion.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Money Win. And also like that hundred bucks they can
- 7:06Speaker 2: go to water stock in your freeze all the food
- 7:08Speaker 2: that you lost. I hate to think about how much
- 7:11Speaker 2: that food would have been worth as well, because I
- 7:13Speaker 2: don't know about you guys, but like if something's a
- 7:15Speaker 2: little bit more expensive, like say we've bought steak and
- 7:18Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, we haven't actually cooked that into the freezer.
- 7:21Speaker 2: She goes immediately into the I'm gonna freeze it, Like
- 7:24Speaker 2: I don't want that stuff to go to waste because
- 7:26Speaker 2: it's like a little bit more expensive. The broccoli that
- 7:29Speaker 2: looks a little bit limp in my vegetable crisp bethough
- 7:31Speaker 2: that never makes it to the freezer. So I feel
- 7:34Speaker 2: like my freezer. It's like the expensive part of my kitchen. Really,
- 7:38Speaker 2: I want that to go to waste. There is also
- 7:41Speaker 2: no worse smell than.
- 7:47Speaker 5: You're out.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Next, I've got a money win from Penny, who said
- 7:51Speaker 4: she went to her favorite bar with a friend. They
- 7:52Speaker 4: got a glass of winy. When they went to pay,
- 7:55Speaker 4: the bartender said that somebody had anonymously donated five hundred
- 7:58Speaker 4: bucks towards a venue wide tab, so they each got
- 8:01Speaker 4: their glasses one for free.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Do you cute?
- 8:04Speaker 4: Do you ever fantasize about having enough money to be
- 8:06Speaker 4: able to do it like pay? You go to a
- 8:08Speaker 4: coffee shop and say, hey, like for every service worker
- 8:10Speaker 4: that comes in, like pay for their coffee for the day.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Should do that. We should do my dream. We should
- 8:15Speaker 2: We should find a cafe that's local and do that
- 8:18Speaker 2: for a day. We're like coffees are on sheese on
- 8:20Speaker 2: the money. Yeah, I feel so fun. Yeah.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Oh I'd love to just like look across the bar
- 8:26Speaker 3: one day and be like, I'm going to pay for
- 8:28Speaker 3: those girls.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Literally reason creepy men in the bar, like I see
- 8:36Speaker 2: you Jessica to tell her these drinks on me, and
- 8:40Speaker 2: Josica's like, please send it back.
- 8:42Speaker 4: I will not be accepting that, but thank you so much. Next,
- 8:44Speaker 4: I've got the money from Christie who said she saw
- 8:47Speaker 4: vd's real about the Core special and she signed up
- 8:51Speaker 4: four days before they went on a trip, and they
- 8:52Speaker 4: say fifty percent. Actually some meals at the restaurant and they.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Got two free drinks.
- 8:56Speaker 4: They also told the accommodation when they booked how excited
- 8:59Speaker 4: that she to be staying. Next it was their anniversary
- 9:01Speaker 4: and they.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Got a bottle of bubbles on arrival. Oh my gosh,
- 9:04Speaker 2: I love a mouthful that I'm about to go stay
- 9:07Speaker 2: in Queensland. This is not sponsored, by the way, this
- 9:09Speaker 2: is just us talking about a good money wan. I'm
- 9:11Speaker 2: about to go stay in Queensland. And I literally made
- 9:14Speaker 2: sure like three times that I'd put my Core membership
- 9:17Speaker 2: in because I know that the place that we're staying
- 9:19Speaker 2: in Queensland there's like it's like kind of a resort.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I'm going to get fifty percent off my meals, Like
- 9:24Speaker 2: I'm not missing out on that. I'm going to make
- 9:26Speaker 2: sure that I have that. I've not only entered it
- 9:28Speaker 2: where they asked me, do you have an a Core
- 9:29Speaker 2: membership what's a number? I was like, yeah, I have it,
- 9:31Speaker 2: but I also made sure I put it in the
- 9:33Speaker 2: notes of my booking because I was like, don't miss this,
- 9:37Speaker 2: just like rock up with a shirt with the like
- 9:40Speaker 2: print my core membership number and be like, did you
- 9:42Speaker 2: see this.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Just in case, just and I know people are gonna
- 9:46Speaker 4: have questions if they've missed the real So we did
- 9:47Speaker 4: a blog post on it this week.
- 9:48Speaker 2: If you want to go there, that bit maybe is sponsored,
- 9:52Speaker 2: but my commentary has not had no clue. Sorry a
- 9:55Speaker 2: corps absolutely.
- 9:56Speaker 4: And then last of this week, I have one more
- 9:58Speaker 4: money lost turned money again from Amy.
- 10:01Speaker 2: She lost her purse which had her open card in.
- 10:03Speaker 4: It, which is I think the Sydney want to a
- 10:05Speaker 4: Mikey and she said, spoiler alert, I will claim it
- 10:08Speaker 4: today from the depot because a kind, harder person gave
- 10:10Speaker 4: it in, which is very lucky. Thank you to that person.
- 10:13Speaker 2: But she's so nice.
- 10:15Speaker 4: She went to get a new Opal card and she
- 10:17Speaker 4: was able to transfer the balance off of her old one.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Oh that's so good, which was lucky because she had
- 10:22Speaker 4: one hundred and thirty bucks on there.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So that's why you should always register your hot ak
- 10:26Speaker 2: so like always register your public transport cards because if
- 10:30Speaker 2: that's the case, you can cancel your old one and
- 10:32Speaker 2: have the balance shift over you wrote the lacy cash.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Also funny side note, I was in Sydney this week
- 10:39Speaker 2: speaking at south By Southwest with that so amazing. That
- 10:45Speaker 2: is really cool, actually elite, and I got a notification
- 10:47Speaker 2: on the plane as we were landing from my bank
- 10:49Speaker 2: and it said, hey, did you know you can use
- 10:52Speaker 2: your bank card for public transport now? So like in Sydney,
- 10:56Speaker 2: you don't need your Opal card, you can just type
- 10:58Speaker 2: your bank card. Yeah, but look at my bank shoving
- 11:02Speaker 2: it in my face. You can only do this in
- 11:04Speaker 2: New South Wales. Victoria hasn't caught up yet. That's so
- 11:08Speaker 2: annoying because the other day I wanted to catch the
- 11:10Speaker 2: tram but I couldn't find a Mikey because I don't
- 11:13Speaker 2: usually catch the tram. Yeah yeah, but you know what
- 11:18Speaker 2: I mean, Like it was actually I walked, so it
- 11:20Speaker 2: wasn't the end of the world. And it's like the
- 11:21Speaker 2: biggest first world problem ever. But I was like, how
- 11:24Speaker 2: much simpler would it be if I could just tap
- 11:26Speaker 2: my Apple pay. Yeah, anyway, he's got to catch up.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Come a Mikey, Come on, Mikey, We've got Android. I
- 11:32Speaker 2: just want to say, I just want to put that
- 11:33Speaker 2: out there. You can with Android. It must be nice,
- 11:35Speaker 2: it must be nice. I live in the cult that
- 11:38Speaker 2: is the Apple units there. Yeah, so anyway, tell me
- 11:42Speaker 2: what broke tips have you got for us this week? There? Yes, okay,
- 11:45Speaker 2: So this first one comes from Kisser. I love that kissing.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I know that sounds like I'm made of yours.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Kisses are now waiting for me, So I'd better make
- 11:58Speaker 3: this quick. So Kisser says, join bunch. This is through Woolwords.
- 12:03Speaker 3: So I did google it because this one came in
- 12:05Speaker 3: very very recently.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Yeah before. It's just fresh, just fresh, and so I
- 12:09Speaker 2: googled it.
- 12:09Speaker 3: It looks like it's like taste testing free food, free
- 12:14Speaker 3: treats through Woolwords. You have to join though, and when
- 12:17Speaker 3: I google it, it did say the right capacity. So
- 12:20Speaker 3: just keeps checking, keep an eye on it, keep checking.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Do try and join.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I feel like there are otherwise you can maybe just
- 12:26Speaker 3: like email them and maybe go on a wait list.
- 12:28Speaker 2: So surely there's something like that. Corl's have an equivalent
- 12:31Speaker 2: to I think it's called Cole's Circle. Okay, that's great
- 12:35Speaker 2: to know. Cool's circle. Kelle Ween would like some free stuff.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you. So I think that's a great one.
- 12:41Speaker 2: If you just want some, you know, I will taste
- 12:43Speaker 2: test a lot of things if you go. Do you
- 12:45Speaker 2: want to try it? Yes? I do, absolutely, the little
- 12:48Speaker 2: bits of scroll at the bakery, I'm taste testing. They
- 12:52Speaker 2: might be handing out stuff.
- 12:53Speaker 4: By Southwest, I'll take twenty.
- 13:01Speaker 2: So Tim Tam was a major sponsor of south By
- 13:03Speaker 2: Southwest Parnetts, We love you. But we did make it
- 13:07Speaker 2: our personal mission because you know when you go to
- 13:08Speaker 2: a conference and then give you a canvas toach to
- 13:11Speaker 2: collect all of your lip, well, we made it our
- 13:14Speaker 2: personal mission to see how many individually wrapped Tim Tams
- 13:17Speaker 2: we could fit in Jessica's bag. Oh and how many
- 13:20Speaker 2: did you get in there?
- 13:20Speaker 4: It wasn't like we went making a real every time
- 13:23Speaker 4: we make all someone because there are lots of people
- 13:26Speaker 4: like all over the conference that had this.
- 13:27Speaker 2: We didn't just go tip it. That's no fun. Like
- 13:29Speaker 2: you can't just go and tip a whole heap of
- 13:31Speaker 2: Tim Tams in your bag and be like ha ha.
- 13:32Speaker 2: We could fit this many and if someone catches you, yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 2: And we also had to wait until we were offered
- 13:37Speaker 2: a Tim Tam. Yeah. So like they'd be like, do
- 13:39Speaker 2: you want to Tim Tam And we'd be like, oh,
- 13:41Speaker 2: what a coincidence. We'd love Tim Town and then then
- 13:43Speaker 2: hand us to Tim Taman, I like sneak it into
- 13:45Speaker 2: Jess's bag and then we're like aha, run away. And
- 13:47Speaker 2: then another person and then they'd be like Tim Taman.
- 13:50Speaker 2: You'd be like, wow, I have not been asked yet.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Thank you so much. And then there was this one
- 13:56Speaker 2: girl who I think quattoned on to us that was
- 14:00Speaker 2: then near the entrance. I see that. We kept going
- 14:02Speaker 2: in and out and she would look at us and
- 14:04Speaker 2: be like Tim Tam and we'd be like, yep, she knew.
- 14:07Speaker 4: She knew.
- 14:08Speaker 2: She's a girl's girl. She respected the hustle ife.
- 14:12Speaker 4: I love it.
- 14:12Speaker 2: She also saw us filming putting the Tim Tams into
- 14:15Speaker 2: Jess's bag, and I thought she thought it was study.
- 14:17Speaker 4: But she didn't see here, nor say she's blind, she's blind,
- 14:22Speaker 4: pets or nothing.
- 14:24Speaker 2: She was an icon. We can't remember what she looked like.
- 14:26Speaker 2: We can't remember what gates she was on on it's
- 14:28Speaker 2: don't ask, we will not tell you. But then when
- 14:31Speaker 2: we got to the airport, our flight was delayed, so
- 14:34Speaker 2: Jess sat on the ground and we tipped all the
- 14:35Speaker 2: tim Tams over it. Oh and how many?
- 14:38Speaker 4: How did you? We got like some twenty something tim tams,
- 14:40Speaker 4: which is crazy considering we're collecting those one by now.
- 14:44Speaker 2: That's dedication. Thank you. That was a good broke tip.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Thank you from Kisser. I mean, thank you, thank you Kisser.
- 14:50Speaker 2: But also take free stuff from conferences. Yes, absolutely, that
- 14:54Speaker 2: is actually a really good on Okay.
- 14:56Speaker 3: This next one comes from Ben who says, go to
- 15:00Speaker 3: this is like a Melbourne thing, but I'm sure there
- 15:02Speaker 3: are equivalents in other states and things.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Go to Richmond Common Home, which is close to here.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I had never heard of it. It looks like a cafe.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I did google.
- 15:11Speaker 3: It looks like it just like your stand a cafe bakery.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Take the bread home, so I haven't been there personally.
- 15:17Speaker 3: This is also a freshy, so I haven't had time
- 15:19Speaker 3: to go and.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Share it or something of that.
- 15:20Speaker 4: But also like what I mean, take the bread home,
- 15:23Speaker 4: like from the table. This is what I'm yet to
- 15:25Speaker 4: fact check.
- 15:26Speaker 2: So like I do often go to a cafe and
- 15:28Speaker 2: purchase bread and then I take it home, but I
- 15:30Speaker 2: have to purchase.
- 15:31Speaker 4: It and there's no there no that's an exchange of
- 15:34Speaker 4: money for good that is actually a transaction.
- 15:39Speaker 3: But from what I can tell, this is like free bread.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And the fact that it's Common Home, I'm thinking, like
- 15:45Speaker 3: maybe they're giving out free bread because.
- 15:47Speaker 2: After it's like done trading, like all the bread that
- 15:50Speaker 2: they have after lunch while they're like shutting up shop
- 15:52Speaker 2: or something.
- 15:53Speaker 3: But I will say that if you do go to
- 15:55Speaker 3: like a bakery or a cafe. I was sitting at
- 15:57Speaker 3: a bakery with my girlfriend the other day, maybe just
- 15:59Speaker 3: go your friend. Do you have a good friend and
- 16:02Speaker 3: day We wouldn't know.
- 16:04Speaker 2: No, I never heard about it. But they were just like,
- 16:07Speaker 2: do you guys want some free bread? Take as many
- 16:09Speaker 2: loads as you like. We're about to close, So whether
- 16:13Speaker 2: how many loads and how many loads of breads did
- 16:15Speaker 2: you take?
- 16:15Speaker 3: We actually only took two because we were that's respectful,
- 16:18Speaker 3: but we really.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Wanted to take all of them. Yeah, that would have
- 16:21Speaker 2: been me. And I've been like, thanks, nah, I'm good,
- 16:23Speaker 2: I just want one, And in the back of my head,
- 16:25Speaker 2: I'm like I wanted fifty.
- 16:28Speaker 3: So whether or not Richmond Common Home do free bread daily,
- 16:31Speaker 3: like every single day, all day, every day, honestly, go
- 16:34Speaker 3: to your local bakery when they're closing up and be like, hey,
- 16:36Speaker 3: what are you throwing out today?
- 16:38Speaker 2: Can I take some love? How good is that? I
- 16:40Speaker 2: love that? And what's your broke tip?
- 16:42Speaker 3: My one is we have mentioned before kind of like
- 16:45Speaker 3: in the similar vein where trying YouTube your car problems
- 16:49Speaker 3: see if you can fix them yourself, because.
- 16:51Speaker 2: More there have you been watching my videos on Instagram
- 16:55Speaker 2: and now you're using that as your broke tep Okay.
- 16:58Speaker 3: This is I believe I'm doing myself hole because I'm
- 17:01Speaker 3: saying I haven't watched your Instagram and.
- 17:05Speaker 2: It's it's very funny, and I think that everyone in
- 17:07Speaker 2: now She's on the money community will probably understand this.
- 17:10Speaker 2: But you guys, hear my voice twenty four seven. At
- 17:13Speaker 2: this point, I probably would have blocked me on TikTok
- 17:17Speaker 2: on Instagram, like Jess doesn't need more of me. She
- 17:20Speaker 2: hears me on the pod, so like she hears me
- 17:22Speaker 2: on the pod, then she hears me in the office,
- 17:24Speaker 2: then she hears me on teams, then she sees me
- 17:26Speaker 2: on Slack. She does not need more. And then I'm
- 17:33Speaker 2: slide into her dms on Instagram like did you see
- 17:35Speaker 2: Thistrictly voice memos? So that she can still hear your voice. Mate,
- 17:41Speaker 2: We are on TikTok at eleven pm DM and each other,
- 17:45Speaker 2: so if anybody else is on that side of TikTok,
- 17:47Speaker 2: we're with you. Yeah, be done. I'll go there, especially
- 17:50Speaker 2: now that you mentioned it. My phone's listening.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Yeah good, Yes, so I haven't seen it, but I
- 17:54Speaker 3: wonder if it's what close to you or similar to
- 17:56Speaker 3: what it was your youtubing was so right now, I obviously,
- 18:00Speaker 3: as you guys know, I don't have a back window
- 18:01Speaker 3: because someone broke into my car months ago.
- 18:04Speaker 2: What is your back window made of? Currently? Duct tape?
- 18:07Speaker 2: It's duct tape? Yeah, that's nice, honestly, what can't it do?
- 18:11Speaker 3: Seriously, what can't it do? That was another broad tip.
- 18:14Speaker 3: My cousin dact tape to a vacuum and she has
- 18:15Speaker 3: a vacuum on an angle now but it really works.
- 18:17Speaker 3: But anyway, exactly, duct tape does fix a lot of things.
- 18:21Speaker 3: But anyway, my window is broken, my clutch is slipping, and.
- 18:24Speaker 2: You don't even know.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Like, if you google the most niche and specific thing,
- 18:30Speaker 3: YouTube will have the answer. So I've been quoted between
- 18:33Speaker 3: fifteen hundred and two thousand dollars to replace my clutch.
- 18:36Speaker 3: But I bought a clutch kit for one hundred and
- 18:39Speaker 3: fifty bucks, okay, and it is quite labor mechanic quid, yeah,
- 18:45Speaker 3: thank you so much. And I googled two thousand and
- 18:47Speaker 3: four five speed manual and this exact game. It came
- 18:51Speaker 3: up exactly how to fix it. It's quite labor. So if
- 18:54Speaker 3: I had the money, I would absolutely get someone to pay,
- 18:57Speaker 3: because it's not like I'm being ripped off for anything.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I totally but it's just a very expensive thing to do. Yes,
- 19:02Speaker 2: you're going to give it a hot crack. I'm going
- 19:04Speaker 2: to give it a crack.
- 19:05Speaker 3: And basically my broake tip is that import anyone out there,
- 19:08Speaker 3: if you have a car problem and you have the
- 19:11Speaker 3: physical ability to maybe just have a look, then YouTube it.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I promise it will come up no matter what your
- 19:16Speaker 3: problem is. It will come up, no matter how niche,
- 19:19Speaker 3: and just try that first. See if you can find
- 19:21Speaker 3: the little bits and pieces. And honestly, it's a lot
- 19:23Speaker 3: of a lot of fun and extremely satisfying just getting
- 19:27Speaker 3: in there and getting hands dirty.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Always can do it. How hard can it be?
- 19:30Speaker 4: If you get good at it, you should start like
- 19:31Speaker 4: offering it to friends, be like, hey, if you need it,
- 19:33Speaker 4: replace like, I'll do it for like five hundred bucks,
- 19:35Speaker 4: which covers materials and labor, which is like seventy five
- 19:38Speaker 4: percent off for them like that they'd be so but
- 19:42Speaker 4: then like you like you can do you said it's fun,
- 19:44Speaker 4: it's a little bit easy money, Like yeah, that's actually
- 19:46Speaker 4: a great idea. Become like the French mechanic and do
- 19:49Speaker 4: cheap services.
- 19:51Speaker 2: That's great. I love this and it actually plays into
- 19:53Speaker 2: the video of mine that I posted on the internet
- 19:55Speaker 2: that nobody's watched. So this week I replaced my wife.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Funny story, Actually, someone stole my wipers off my car.
- 20:06Speaker 2: My car's relatively nondescript, like it's not like I have
- 20:09Speaker 2: custom plates or something, so like people wouldn't know that
- 20:11Speaker 2: it's mine. But anyway, I got my one of my
- 20:14Speaker 2: wipers stolen, which is arguably worse for me. That's super annoying.
- 20:17Speaker 2: That's rude. Anyway, So I got online because my dad
- 20:21Speaker 2: has always said you can just do it yourself, Like
- 20:24Speaker 2: why not. I ordered my wiper blades just from I think,
- 20:27Speaker 2: like wipe a Tech. Why wipe a Tech because my
- 20:29Speaker 2: dad told me to order them from wipe a Tech
- 20:31Speaker 2: and same thing back. You're just key in your car.
- 20:34Speaker 2: You're key in the model, the year, and it tells
- 20:36Speaker 2: you what wipers you need to buy, and then you
- 20:39Speaker 2: order them. They have like ten percent off or something
- 20:41Speaker 2: on their website, so it ended up being super cheap
- 20:43Speaker 2: and you just clip them in yourself. It's just so easy.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I also chopped up my water, did my oil. You
- 20:49Speaker 2: can do all of that stuff yourself. You don't need
- 20:52Speaker 2: to pay somebody. I just do. I find it so
- 20:55Speaker 2: funny because I think the second that you go, oh,
- 20:58Speaker 2: it's something on your car that needs feeling, we think
- 21:00Speaker 2: that we can't do it ourselves. Yeah, And I was
- 21:03Speaker 2: talking to our producer Emma the other day and she's like, oh,
- 21:06Speaker 2: car door handle broke. My husband just ordered a brand
- 21:09Speaker 2: new one, you know, ten bucks or whatever it was.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Allie Express does the job. Yeah. Absolutely, we can do
- 21:16Speaker 2: hard things. Really we can. We absolutely can, and even
- 21:19Speaker 2: things around the house. The boys do it. I just
- 21:21Speaker 2: can't get that real out of mind yet, neither can I.
- 21:24Speaker 2: That's all I have. That's all you've got. I love that.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Let's go to a break on the flip side, we're
- 21:29Speaker 5: going to be talking about our money dilemma, which This
- 21:31Speaker 5: week is about navigating getting a mortgage when you're a
- 21:33Speaker 5: sex worker and something you slid into.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Our DMS about is about the fallout of falling victim
- 21:38Speaker 2: to fomo spending, which I think everyone on the table
- 21:41Speaker 2: can relate to. So don't go anywhere, guys.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Welcome back everyone. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 21:49Speaker 4: money dilemma.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 21:55Speaker 5: can't solve? The She's on the Money team is here
- 21:57Speaker 5: to help. Every week we tackle your.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Dilemmas, both big and small, to answer your most burning money,
- 22:03Speaker 2: career and life questions. To get involved, simply head to
- 22:06Speaker 2: our website and leave us a short voice recording and
- 22:08Speaker 2: you might just find yourself on the show. Now, let's
- 22:11Speaker 2: take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Hello, I work casually as a disability support worker and
- 22:20Speaker 6: a sex worker full service, and I'm trying to get
- 22:24Speaker 6: ready to buy a home. But I have some questions
- 22:27Speaker 6: around privacy with my home loan broker as well as
- 22:30Speaker 6: my parents want to be involved, and I'm just questioning
- 22:34Speaker 6: how can I keep this private. I'm doing the best
- 22:37Speaker 6: that I can, trying to pay as much tax as
- 22:39Speaker 6: possible and putting all of my cash into the bank.
- 22:42Speaker 2: But yeah, I have to.
- 22:43Speaker 6: Be open with these things with mortgage brokers, and I
- 22:46Speaker 6: don't necessarily want to tell them and my parents that
- 22:49Speaker 6: I'm a sex worker. Thanks so much.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Bye.
- 22:51Speaker 2: What do you reckon?
- 22:52Speaker 6: Beck?
- 22:52Speaker 2: I feel like you want to be the first cab
- 22:54Speaker 2: off the rank to answer this.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Yes, only because I have a friend who is well
- 22:59Speaker 3: was in a very similar position.
- 23:01Speaker 2: She now has home.
- 23:03Speaker 3: But it's not like organ news because she so she said,
- 23:08Speaker 3: and this is like, really, this is secondhand information that
- 23:11Speaker 3: I was was a while ago.
- 23:13Speaker 2: So I'm probably gonna butcher this.
- 23:15Speaker 3: But she said she is a sole trader, so she
- 23:17Speaker 3: does pay tax, she has an ABN. But I don't
- 23:20Speaker 3: know that you. I mean, I could be wrong, but
- 23:22Speaker 3: you might not need to say what you do. You
- 23:24Speaker 3: might just have to be a soul trader.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I'm not sure. But anyway, for the six months leading
- 23:28Speaker 2: up to it could have been three or six leading up.
- 23:30Speaker 3: To actually getting a home loan, she had to get
- 23:34Speaker 3: a full time job to show that she had what
- 23:38Speaker 3: consistent income that was through a different Nah.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I don't know if that's that's the right wall. That's
- 23:44Speaker 2: like I'm really saying nah, because like I've got heaps
- 23:46Speaker 2: of clients who are sex workers. Yeah, I don't know
- 23:48Speaker 2: if you need to be in an issue totally. If
- 23:51Speaker 2: you're a sex worker, that's a legitimate job, Like it's
- 23:54Speaker 2: just a job, and will address the other side of it.
- 23:56Speaker 2: But if you have a job and you are paying
- 23:59Speaker 2: tax on that job, and you are generating an income,
- 24:02Speaker 2: and you can prove to me as your broker that
- 24:05Speaker 2: you have a consistent income over twelve months, I can
- 24:09Speaker 2: get you alone. It's a non issue. I think the
- 24:12Speaker 2: issue I can see where she's coming from, Like, if
- 24:15Speaker 2: this is your job and you haven't told your parents
- 24:16Speaker 2: or the broker, to be honest, I see that as
- 24:18Speaker 2: a bit of a red flag, not because you have
- 24:20Speaker 2: to tell your parents you don't, but more as a
- 24:22Speaker 2: red flag get a better broker, Like I love the
- 24:27Speaker 2: people that I work with and have the utmost respect
- 24:30Speaker 2: for them. And if you don't feel like your broker
- 24:33Speaker 2: is extending that to you where you don't feel comfortable
- 24:36Speaker 2: to share the job that you do. Like how weird
- 24:38Speaker 2: if I went to see a finance professional and said, oh,
- 24:42Speaker 2: I don't really want to tell them that I'm a
- 24:44Speaker 2: podcaster like, that's I would never want you to be
- 24:47Speaker 2: in a situation where we're talking about money, talking about
- 24:50Speaker 2: creating wealth, talking about getting you in your first home,
- 24:52Speaker 2: and there's something about your financial situation that you're scared
- 24:55Speaker 2: to tell me about. Yeah, Like, I'm your broker, it's
- 24:57Speaker 2: my job to protect you. If your parents want to
- 25:00Speaker 2: get involved as a guaranteur, I would get on the
- 25:03Speaker 2: right page with your broker so that they understand where
- 25:06Speaker 2: it's coming from, because the banks may be going to
- 25:08Speaker 2: ask questions, not because you're a sex worker, but because
- 25:11Speaker 2: they might want clarity on oh, it seems like you
- 25:14Speaker 2: get paid sometimes weekly, sometimes fortnightly, like what's the deal?
- 25:17Speaker 2: How does that work? Like they might have just clarifying
- 25:19Speaker 2: questions because it's a genuine source of income, right, But
- 25:23Speaker 2: if you didn't want to tell your parents, I would
- 25:25Speaker 2: be sitting down with your broker and saying, Hey, my
- 25:28Speaker 2: parents want to guarantee my loan. I've told them that
- 25:30Speaker 2: I do this particular job, or you know, I work
- 25:33Speaker 2: in retail or I do something else. Yeah, can you
- 25:35Speaker 2: just not share that information? And they won't because more
- 25:38Speaker 2: often than not, when you're working with a guaranteur, I
- 25:40Speaker 2: don't actually need to share information about the person they're guaranteuring.
- 25:44Speaker 2: I actually need to get a whole heap of information
- 25:45Speaker 2: from your parents about the asset that they're using to
- 25:48Speaker 2: underwrite your loan, and what they do and what their
- 25:51Speaker 2: income is. Like, it's not so much about sharing your
- 25:53Speaker 2: information with your parents. It's actually the opposite. It's about
- 25:56Speaker 2: getting information from your parents. So it's good to know.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I would just find somebody like one of the Zella
- 26:02Speaker 2: money mortgage brokers who just want to support you, Like
- 26:06Speaker 2: I love a queen who's just paving your own path
- 26:09Speaker 2: and getting shit done like iconic. Yeah, completely agree. Just
- 26:15Speaker 2: what would you do? I have nothing to haden, You're
- 26:16Speaker 2: honestly like it. It's just a job.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I completely agree. Like I think you have
- 26:20Speaker 4: to tell your broker. I don't really see any world
- 26:22Speaker 4: in which you don't tell your broker. But you don't
- 26:24Speaker 4: have to tell you.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Like if you came to me and you're saying the
- 26:27Speaker 2: I really want to get a home loan, I'd be like, cool,
- 26:29Speaker 2: what do you do? And then you're like, oh, well,
- 26:31Speaker 2: my generating income, I'd be like, how, Like I need
- 26:35Speaker 2: to make sure that that income is clean and clear
- 26:38Speaker 2: and going to get you alone. And I'd like, I
- 26:41Speaker 2: actually just don't care where it comes from as long
- 26:43Speaker 2: as you're paying tax on it. And I think that
- 26:45Speaker 2: that's a really good point because in the industry, obviously
- 26:48Speaker 2: there's like a lot of shame that shouldn't be there,
- 26:50Speaker 2: there's a lot of judgment that shouldn't be there. But
- 26:53Speaker 2: you need to find the right finance team that can
- 26:56Speaker 2: be on your page because hopefully if you're killing it,
- 27:00Speaker 2: usually with sex work, it's the type of work that
- 27:03Speaker 2: you need to make hay while the sun's shining, Like
- 27:05Speaker 2: you're not potentially going to be able to do this
- 27:08Speaker 2: until you're sixty five and retiring. More often than not,
- 27:12Speaker 2: I see this industry be quite short. If you're having
- 27:16Speaker 2: the sunshine and you are making a heap of money
- 27:19Speaker 2: and buying your first home, I want to make sure
- 27:21Speaker 2: that we are structuring it properly, making sure that your
- 27:23Speaker 2: cash flow is looking good, making sure that maybe I
- 27:26Speaker 2: can get you into a second investment property that you
- 27:28Speaker 2: can really solidify your wealth now, because like, why are
- 27:31Speaker 2: you working so hard to not put that money to
- 27:34Speaker 2: work for you? Absolutely anyway, I just think that you
- 27:37Speaker 2: should be getting the right people on your team that
- 27:39Speaker 2: are backing you instead of making you feel like, oh,
- 27:41Speaker 2: I don't really want to share that. I get the
- 27:43Speaker 2: parent thing. You don't have to tell anybody anything that
- 27:46Speaker 2: you don't want to share. Yeah, when it comes to
- 27:48Speaker 2: a broker, I need to know your stuff and I
- 27:51Speaker 2: need you to trust me with it. So if you're
- 27:52Speaker 2: not trusting that broker that you're talking about, get a
- 27:55Speaker 2: new one, babe, getting you out with the old in
- 27:57Speaker 2: with a new. Absolutely. Are you guys ready for the DM.
- 28:02Speaker 4: Today? All right?
- 28:03Speaker 2: So here's the damn we got. Hey, she's on the money.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I've been hating on myself a lot lately and need
- 28:07Speaker 2: your help. I'm finding it really hard to balance my
- 28:10Speaker 2: budget with my social life. My friends have been organizing
- 28:13Speaker 2: lots of group catch ups for dinners and birthdays, for example,
- 28:16Speaker 2: and I get serious fomo and I feel like I
- 28:19Speaker 2: have to say yes to everything, but every time I
- 28:21Speaker 2: spend way more than I'd planned, and then I'm left
- 28:24Speaker 2: scrambling to cover my bills. Last weekend, I ended up
- 28:27Speaker 2: spending half my bill budget on a night out and
- 28:30Speaker 2: now I'm really regretting it. The problem is also I
- 28:32Speaker 2: feel uncomfortable saying no to plans because I can't afford it.
- 28:36Speaker 2: How can I break this cycle and still have a
- 28:38Speaker 2: social life. I wonder if this is me that did
- 28:43Speaker 2: you like have a few too many drinks right into
- 28:45Speaker 2: your own show and then forget that you did it?
- 28:48Speaker 4: Yes?
- 28:50Speaker 2: Why, Yes, that was me.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Anytime anyone asked me to do any too many soda waters,
- 28:55Speaker 3: I just cannot not do it, you know, And then
- 28:59Speaker 3: I end up spa all the money that I maybe
- 29:03Speaker 3: had plans to do something else with, you know what
- 29:06Speaker 3: I mean.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Ye, But it's relatable, like this is not something that
- 29:11Speaker 2: you know only you're experiencing. Lots of people are like, Oh,
- 29:15Speaker 2: my friend's birthday is happening, I'm gonna have to go.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I just think and I feel like we say this
- 29:20Speaker 2: a lot.
- 29:21Speaker 3: If your friends aren't kind of like understanding or kind
- 29:27Speaker 3: of making you feel comfortable in a situation where like
- 29:29Speaker 3: you can't actually spend money maybe on a birthday present,
- 29:31Speaker 3: maybe on dinner, maybe on all these things, if they're
- 29:34Speaker 3: not making you feel like it's okay to still be
- 29:37Speaker 3: present because your money is not who they're hanging out with,
- 29:41Speaker 3: it's you. And so if you go like I'll always
- 29:44Speaker 3: go to dinner if I can't afford it, then either
- 29:46Speaker 3: someone will pay for me because they're like, hey, you're
- 29:48Speaker 3: not just gonna sit there and do nothing, Like.
- 29:51Speaker 2: I'll be like, beck, get in the car, totally, totally.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I'll let people know in advance, are like, I'm really broke,
- 29:56Speaker 3: you guys, So I'm gonna come, but I'm gonna eat first,
- 29:58Speaker 3: or I'm gonna come and i'm gonna order I'm.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Just gonna have a drink, or I'm gonna have it
- 30:01Speaker 2: on a tray, or we're.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Gonna pick at everyone else's dinner, which is very annoying.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Are you a seagull like you go and you just
- 30:09Speaker 2: steal a chip? You're like, I am. I don't want
- 30:12Speaker 2: to be a scam.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Sometimes I am, but people don't always like I never
- 30:15Speaker 4: finish my meals a restaurants because they're always so big,
- 30:17Speaker 4: and I'm always saying to everyone, hey, like do you
- 30:19Speaker 4: want to eat go halves on something.
- 30:22Speaker 2: I mean, I don't think the strategy is go and
- 30:24Speaker 2: expect other people to pay it for you, or go
- 30:26Speaker 2: and scab chips. But will always but I like the audacity.
- 30:32Speaker 2: You're like, I'm going I just I will be eating
- 30:35Speaker 2: your tube and I carry.
- 30:36Speaker 4: That we give your presence is the exactly.
- 30:40Speaker 3: It's just a felt like bonding with your friends and
- 30:43Speaker 3: just chun ship and that you know, just like having
- 30:45Speaker 3: a good time, good time and like As for gifts
- 30:48Speaker 3: and stuff, just honestly I think gifts.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, actually that's so funny. I have side note.
- 30:55Speaker 2: We will answer this, but have you guys seen the
- 30:58Speaker 2: absolute junk the Abby Chatfield is getting online at the
- 31:02Speaker 2: moment because she posted that, you know, this whole idea
- 31:06Speaker 2: of paying to go to someone's wedding, Like, you know,
- 31:08Speaker 2: if you go to someone's wedding, there seems to be
- 31:10Speaker 2: this unspoken rule of you know, covering what it would
- 31:14Speaker 2: have cost the bride and groom, which I think is
- 31:15Speaker 2: unhinged and absolutely not Like I could go on a
- 31:18Speaker 2: massive rant about this because I think it is wildly
- 31:20Speaker 2: inappropriate to have an event where you expect someone to
- 31:23Speaker 2: pay for a gift or pay you for attending your event,
- 31:27Speaker 2: like that is my wedding that I have chosen to
- 31:29Speaker 2: have anyway. Complete side know, I'll probably go on a
- 31:32Speaker 2: rount on TikTok or something about it at some point soon,
- 31:35Speaker 2: but she's getting so much crap. Is the presence of
- 31:40Speaker 2: you being there, not the present. I agree, I agree,
- 31:42Speaker 2: and I don't. I know, there's lots of cultural things, right, Like,
- 31:45Speaker 2: there's lots of layers to this, and if in your
- 31:47Speaker 2: culture giving gifts makes sense to you, fantastic. But at
- 31:51Speaker 2: a base level, no human being should be expected to
- 31:54Speaker 2: part with their finances to appease somebody else.
- 31:57Speaker 3: If your two options are deep and completely like uncomfortable
- 32:02Speaker 3: anxiety about money, or just not see someone that you
- 32:07Speaker 3: really love get married on the biggest day of their life,
- 32:10Speaker 3: like arguably one of the biggest days of their life,
- 32:12Speaker 3: if that's very important to them. You know what do
- 32:15Speaker 3: you choose? Like you're like loos like lose lose, Yeah,
- 32:18Speaker 3: And I just don't think sho put that pressure on
- 32:20Speaker 3: someone you know, who's just mind their own business totally. Anyway,
- 32:24Speaker 3: back to fomo fomo spending back Apart from scabbing chips,
- 32:28Speaker 3: how are you tackling it?
- 32:30Speaker 2: Or should be asked, yes, yeah, honestly, that's it for me.
- 32:33Speaker 2: I just think that that's it from me. You should
- 32:35Speaker 2: probably scab some chips.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Scab chips, talk to your friends, just try and show up,
- 32:39Speaker 3: and you don't you don't have to spend money.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Be you. That's why you've been in finance.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Actually, no, I was going to say, send your money
- 32:48Speaker 3: to someone else. Want to be friends that you really trust,
- 32:49Speaker 3: and that's what I've been doing, sending it.
- 32:51Speaker 2: That's a terrible idea. I know that. Okay, I'm not
- 32:54Speaker 2: sending money to friends like I cannot guarantee somewhere or
- 33:00Speaker 2: or let's just get good at budget cash flow. I'm
- 33:02Speaker 2: going to teach you. You have me. I'm going to
- 33:04Speaker 2: put you in the best possible position. Yeah, we're going
- 33:07Speaker 2: to do that. It's a better idea, But I do
- 33:09Speaker 2: do not give your money to a random person, Jessica
- 33:13Speaker 2: for most spending, how are you dealing with it? I'm
- 33:15Speaker 2: going to give you a bit of.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Tough love and just say deciding to spend money on
- 33:21Speaker 4: dinner or drinks. As much as I completely understand the
- 33:24Speaker 4: desire to fit in in the desire like I fully
- 33:27Speaker 4: empathize with that, as you said, we've all experienced it,
- 33:30Speaker 4: it is simply a bad choice if you're compromising. If
- 33:33Speaker 4: you go I can either pay my rent or pay
- 33:36Speaker 4: for steak dinner with the girls. It's a bad choice
- 33:41Speaker 4: to elect and that, like to me, that's very black
- 33:43Speaker 4: and white. I know that's very harsh and very mean.
- 33:46Speaker 4: Do we need.
- 33:46Speaker 2: A tough love though, to kick us in the right direction.
- 33:49Speaker 4: I don't mean to be mean, but genuinely, I think
- 33:52Speaker 4: I understand, and like as I you know, you all know,
- 33:55Speaker 4: I have had debt myself, and I've been there, and
- 33:57Speaker 4: I totally get it, and I think you genuinely have
- 34:00Speaker 4: to do some internal work to get past that. I
- 34:03Speaker 4: think it's generally speaking, deeply rooted in your psychology. The
- 34:08Speaker 4: culture of your friendship group as well, I think contributes
- 34:11Speaker 4: a lot to that. And I understand that it is
- 34:14Speaker 4: sometimes embarrassing to say to somebody, Oh, I'm really sorry,
- 34:17Speaker 4: like I can't afford to do this, or I'm going
- 34:20Speaker 4: to come, but I can't get a round of drinks
- 34:22Speaker 4: for everyone if you're all taking turns or.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Whatever that looks like.
- 34:25Speaker 4: I understand that you can feel a little bit like, oh,
- 34:29Speaker 4: like everyone else is doing it and I don't want
- 34:30Speaker 4: to look like an idiot.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Yeah, And then you make it worse in your head,
- 34:34Speaker 2: and then you don't sleep the night before.
- 34:36Speaker 4: The anxietity builds up and builds up and builds up.
- 34:39Speaker 4: But I think the two things that you need to
- 34:40Speaker 4: do the groundwork. Are one being open with your friends
- 34:44Speaker 4: and the people around you, because if they love you
- 34:46Speaker 4: and they are your friends, exactly as Beck said, they're
- 34:49Speaker 4: going to find they just want you there. They don't care.
- 34:52Speaker 2: I didn't invite you for dinner because I want to
- 34:54Speaker 2: send you into personal debt. I invited you for dinner
- 34:56Speaker 2: because I think you're cool and I want to hang
- 34:58Speaker 2: out more.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely can find ways to participate in that, as
- 35:02Speaker 4: you said, whether it's electing for just a small startup,
- 35:04Speaker 4: or splitting with a friend, or even just having a drink.
- 35:08Speaker 4: Like I know that it's not as fun and it
- 35:10Speaker 4: can make you feel a little bit ostracized. But if
- 35:13Speaker 4: you really can't cope with the feeling of missing out,
- 35:17Speaker 4: then your options are find a way to do it affordably,
- 35:20Speaker 4: or let's do a little bit of work and be
- 35:22Speaker 4: okay with missing out on things. Sometimes I know that
- 35:24Speaker 4: I'm a real introvert, and so it probably comes a
- 35:26Speaker 4: lot easier to me.
- 35:28Speaker 2: You're like, oh, no, I can't go. That must be
- 35:32Speaker 2: so terrible.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Sam's front door and runs back to the couch,
- 35:36Speaker 4: jumps in blanket on fuzzy socks.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Cat Online you're like, oh, yeah, no V, I'm crying.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I'm really sorry.
- 35:42Speaker 4: But I think like there is also something to be
- 35:44Speaker 4: said for being comfortable enough in yourself and in your
- 35:48Speaker 4: friends to go okay. I get that they're going to
- 35:50Speaker 4: have fun, and I'm happy that they're going to have fun,
- 35:52Speaker 4: but also like, if it's not on the cards for
- 35:53Speaker 4: me this week financially, I can have a good time
- 35:56Speaker 4: by myself, or I can have a good time and
- 35:58Speaker 4: have a friend come to my place and we buy
- 36:01Speaker 4: a three dollar bag of popcorn and we watch a
- 36:03Speaker 4: movie at home and we do something that way. I
- 36:06Speaker 4: think like finding ways to still be social but not
- 36:10Speaker 4: spend a lot of money is probably striking the right balance.
- 36:13Speaker 4: And as I said, like it's hard to hear, but
- 36:17Speaker 4: it requires a bit of work on you and why
- 36:20Speaker 4: you're responding to the way that things you know that
- 36:22Speaker 4: you are and why you are feeling these ways, And
- 36:25Speaker 4: like sometimes that means go on a therapy, or sometimes
- 36:27Speaker 4: that means just like reflecting a little bit on what's
- 36:30Speaker 4: triggering those feelings and thoughts. But yeah, ultimately I want
- 36:33Speaker 4: to say, as someone who has been there, it is
- 36:35Speaker 4: not worth putting yourself in a financial pit. Because you
- 36:38Speaker 4: don't want to miss out on a good time. It's
- 36:40Speaker 4: just not it's.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Genuinely not I say that with love. I don't know.
- 36:43Speaker 2: I'm sorry, don't really mean. Jess is literally the last
- 36:47Speaker 2: person that's going to be nasty me. On the other hand,
- 36:49Speaker 2: when it comes to love, I also think it's about
- 36:53Speaker 2: shifting your mindsets. So saying oh, I can't afford that
- 36:56Speaker 2: is very different to that's currently not in my budget.
- 37:00Speaker 2: And I think that we need to be empowered by
- 37:02Speaker 2: these conversations of making good money decisions, because future you
- 37:05Speaker 2: was going to thank you being able to say, oh,
- 37:08Speaker 2: that's just not in my budget this week. Like it's
- 37:11Speaker 2: so like and we've spoken about this on the show before.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Beck you mentioned it maybe like two or three episodes
- 37:16Speaker 2: ago on a Friday, and you said, I hate when
- 37:19Speaker 2: someone says, oh, i'm broke, I'll have to dip into savings,
- 37:22Speaker 2: and you're like, well, that's not relatable at all, because
- 37:25Speaker 2: when I say I'm broke, I mean I have four
- 37:28Speaker 2: cents in my bank account and I literally can't do it.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I'm not dipping into savings. And I think that it's
- 37:33Speaker 2: about articulating things clearly, Whereas Becky if you said, oh,
- 37:37Speaker 2: that's not in my budget, that's kind of alluding to
- 37:39Speaker 2: maybe it's not in the budget that I've allocated for
- 37:42Speaker 2: those activities this week, or it's not in the budget
- 37:44Speaker 2: because I'm saving for a holiday. Like it doesn't necessarily
- 37:48Speaker 2: mean that you have to open the can of worms
- 37:50Speaker 2: of sharing your entire financial life. And I think that
- 37:53Speaker 2: when we talk about personal finance, it can actually be
- 37:56Speaker 2: as personal or not personal as you want it to be.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Like I could have and I do. I have these
- 38:01Speaker 2: conversations all the time with you guys. I talk about spending,
- 38:05Speaker 2: I talk about my values. Nobody at this table, nobody
- 38:09Speaker 2: in our community knows how much I earn, how much
- 38:12Speaker 2: I spend, exactly what I own and exactly what I owe.
- 38:16Speaker 2: None of you know that because that's a boundary that
- 38:19Speaker 2: I've drawn and gone, well, actually, that's just not stuff
- 38:22Speaker 2: that I'm willing to share on the show. And there's
- 38:25Speaker 2: a number of reasons for that, one of them being
- 38:28Speaker 2: because I know that a lot of what I do
- 38:30Speaker 2: is not that relatable. Now I'm at a different stage,
- 38:33Speaker 2: and I have been there. I've been in forty thousand
- 38:35Speaker 2: dollars worth of personal debt when my income was sixty
- 38:38Speaker 2: thousand dollars. I could not sleep because of debt, because
- 38:41Speaker 2: I had FOMO, because I wanted to study overseas, because
- 38:44Speaker 2: I wanted to buy a car that I couldn't afford,
- 38:46Speaker 2: because I wanted to go out for dinner with my friends.
- 38:48Speaker 2: So I know you because I was you. So when
- 38:51Speaker 2: I'm giving advice, it's not because I'm now in a
- 38:52Speaker 2: good financial position. It's because I had to pull my
- 38:55Speaker 2: socks up and get myself out of that debt and
- 38:57Speaker 2: start saying no to things. And by being able to say,
- 39:00Speaker 2: I know, to things, I was saying yes to opportunity
- 39:02Speaker 2: and yes to being in a little bit more and
- 39:05Speaker 2: you know, even being able to be given the space
- 39:07Speaker 2: to think about my career, to think about what I
- 39:09Speaker 2: wanted to do. I just ended up in a better
- 39:12Speaker 2: position because I finally started sharing my journey and saying
- 39:15Speaker 2: to my friends, oh, actually I can't do that, Jess.
- 39:18Speaker 2: I need to save or I need to you know,
- 39:21Speaker 2: put some money into my debt, or I need to
- 39:23Speaker 2: do whatever it is. It was scary at the start,
- 39:26Speaker 2: but do you know what happened. It was like a snowball.
- 39:29Speaker 2: I started getting out of debt, but At the same time,
- 39:31Speaker 2: I was collecting stories from friends where I'd be like, oh,
- 39:34Speaker 2: for example, Jess, like, actually, I can't go out for dinner,
- 39:37Speaker 2: like I haven't been sleeping well because I've got this
- 39:40Speaker 2: debt and it's just really stressing me. Someone like Jess
- 39:42Speaker 2: would have turned around if we'd been friends while I
- 39:44Speaker 2: was in debt, like, oh my god, me too far out?
- 39:48Speaker 2: Do you know how empowering those conversations are when someone goes, oh,
- 39:52Speaker 2: me too, like I can almost guarantee that because humans
- 39:58Speaker 2: usually keep the same company, right like Beck, I'm assuming
- 40:01Speaker 2: that your very close friend group, similar values, similar morals,
- 40:05Speaker 2: just same me say, the second you start sharing small things,
- 40:09Speaker 2: it gives permission to other people to share their small things.
- 40:12Speaker 2: And instead of me going, oh, Jez, like, we've got
- 40:15Speaker 2: you know, Stef's birthday dinner soon and I just I
- 40:17Speaker 2: don't know how I'm going to afford it.
- 40:19Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 40:19Speaker 2: There I was thinking the same thing. Those conversations can
- 40:23Speaker 2: become empowering, and I know that they feel like trash
- 40:26Speaker 2: at the beginning, because you're like, I don't know how
- 40:28Speaker 2: Jess is going to take this. I don't know what
- 40:30Speaker 2: she's going to say to me. Maybe she'll judge me.
- 40:32Speaker 2: I promise no good friend is going to judge you,
- 40:35Speaker 2: and I live and die by this quote. No one
- 40:37Speaker 2: doing more than you will ever speak less of you,
- 40:40Speaker 2: and if they do, they're out. So that's where I
- 40:43Speaker 2: will leave that one powerful but literally, nobody doing more
- 40:47Speaker 2: than you will ever speak less of you?
- 40:49Speaker 1: So true?
- 40:50Speaker 4: What did everybody else say?
- 40:51Speaker 2: All right? So the community, we obviously said, what's your
- 40:54Speaker 2: two cents? We said, do you ever fall victim to
- 40:56Speaker 2: fomo spending? Fourteen percent of you unrelated content, Nope, I'm
- 41:01Speaker 2: a budget queen. Okay, did you click.
- 41:04Speaker 4: That I have a phomo spender sometimes?
- 41:07Speaker 2: Fifty six percent of you said sometimes it gets me,
- 41:10Speaker 2: but I'm trying hard to resist. Just click to that one,
- 41:13Speaker 2: and twenty nine percent of you said, all the time.
- 41:15Speaker 2: The struggle is really real. I click that one. Then
- 41:19Speaker 2: we asked what's harder saying no to fomo spending or
- 41:22Speaker 2: the financial stress? Afterwards, thirty one percent of you said
- 41:26Speaker 2: the hardest thing is saying no to fomo, but sixty
- 41:28Speaker 2: nine percent of you said it's harder dealing with the
- 41:32Speaker 2: financial stress after spending.
- 41:34Speaker 4: The fallout is hard the fallout and it deals with
- 41:37Speaker 4: it exactly.
- 41:39Speaker 2: So then we said, all right, give us your two cents.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Someone said, do a sober month challenge with a friend.
- 41:45Speaker 2: You're going to save some cash, increase your health, and
- 41:48Speaker 2: it makes you get creative with your catch up ideas.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Love it kind of cute. Someone else said, at the
- 41:53Speaker 2: end of the day, your friends aren't paying your bills.
- 41:55Speaker 2: It's true, true, savage. Someone said, the only thing we'll
- 41:59Speaker 2: remember when we are old are the memories we make.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Money comes and goes. So true. Yes, that was me
- 42:07Speaker 2: that someone else said. I give in not from fomo,
- 42:11Speaker 2: but more from fear of being perceived as cheap or stingy.
- 42:15Speaker 4: But let's tell you, I hate that that is a thing.
- 42:19Speaker 4: Get rid of it, like be the cheap friend. Maybe
- 42:23Speaker 4: I'm the cheap friend. But like I don't think that
- 42:25Speaker 4: it's a bad thing.
- 42:26Speaker 2: No, not absolutely not. I think it's been the smart brand,
- 42:29Speaker 2: smart with money. Yes, like I think if we sat
- 42:32Speaker 2: down and you know, you know how you sometimes tell
- 42:34Speaker 2: your friends good things, like we've done this before, like
- 42:36Speaker 2: it just remember this is so unrelatable. But remember when
- 42:39Speaker 2: we had our dinner party in New York. So unrelatable.
- 42:43Speaker 2: But we had a friends giving dinner and anyone could
- 42:45Speaker 2: do this right. We had friends giving and the plan
- 42:48Speaker 2: was to have a really nice meal, home cooked meal together,
- 42:51Speaker 2: and we went around the table and we shared things
- 42:54Speaker 2: that we thought were inspirational about each other, things that
- 42:56Speaker 2: were grateful for each other for and it was literally
- 42:59Speaker 2: the most wholesome evening of my entire life in Chai night.
- 43:02Speaker 2: But I can always guarantee not one person if you
- 43:04Speaker 2: had all your friends in a room, if we said, oh,
- 43:08Speaker 2: what do we think is really great about Beck, not
- 43:10Speaker 2: one person is ever going to immediately go bit cheap.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Like They're literally going to say really kind things. They're
- 43:17Speaker 2: going to be like, oh, Jess is really resourceful. I
- 43:19Speaker 2: do not think of you as stingy or cheap. But
- 43:22Speaker 2: then when you are like oh, v I could give
- 43:24Speaker 2: you a list of examples, they'd be like, yeah, I
- 43:25Speaker 2: thought that was just you being smart. Yeah, Like I
- 43:27Speaker 2: just thought that you were good with money. I just
- 43:29Speaker 2: thought that you were actually intelligent and you were an
- 43:32Speaker 2: investor and you're probably going to be richer than me, Like,
- 43:34Speaker 2: is that not what's going on here? Yeah?
- 43:36Speaker 3: I've never ever with your any of my friends who
- 43:38Speaker 3: are really really good with their money. I've never thought
- 43:40Speaker 3: stingy cheap time. But like, I think there's definitely difference
- 43:44Speaker 3: between if you are the kind of person that is
- 43:46Speaker 3: taking the benefits of what everyone buying rounds, but you're
- 43:49Speaker 3: not buying them because it's not like, yeah, you're like
- 43:54Speaker 3: me and still a n's just don't buy anyone anything.
- 43:56Speaker 3: But yeah that those who are completely different what you
- 43:59Speaker 3: know this person could do and what you're doing. Jess
- 44:02Speaker 3: is obviously uv extremely smart, extremely admirable.
- 44:06Speaker 4: Yeah, don't they things and not reciprocate, but you don't.
- 44:09Speaker 4: You can find other ways to participate.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Yeah, calling someone stingy is moreover a reflection of you
- 44:16Speaker 2: and your values than of them and what they're doing.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Like if I said, oh, Victoria's stingy, I think that
- 44:23Speaker 2: just is a narrative that I've built in my head
- 44:26Speaker 2: that maybe I feel stingy when I do something like that.
- 44:29Speaker 2: But you never know someone's goals or motivations for doing something,
- 44:33Speaker 2: Like if Jess is like, oh, for example, you know
- 44:35Speaker 2: you might call your friend stingy if they're like, oh, no,
- 44:37Speaker 2: I don't want to split it. Equally, I actually want
- 44:39Speaker 2: to just pay for my items. You might think, or
- 44:42Speaker 2: someone might think, oh, that's real cheap. But Jess might
- 44:45Speaker 2: be thinking, oh, but Beck's not going to want to
- 44:47Speaker 2: do that, So I'm going to be the one that
- 44:49Speaker 2: speaks up. So she's not even the stingy friend. She
- 44:51Speaker 2: just knows that Beck only wants to pay for her
- 44:53Speaker 2: soda water and doesn't want to pay for my champagne.
- 44:55Speaker 2: You know, so she's fair one hundred percent. But like
- 44:59Speaker 2: you never I know why someone's bringing that up. And
- 45:01Speaker 2: if your default is thinking that Jess is being stingy
- 45:04Speaker 2: by making that comment, Babe, that says more about you
- 45:07Speaker 2: than it does about Jess's motivations.
- 45:09Speaker 4: Again, you need to do some work on yourself, do.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Some internal work, friend. Someone else said, and I thought
- 45:14Speaker 2: this was really smart. They said, I've actually started a
- 45:17Speaker 2: FOMO savings account. My goal is to get to two
- 45:19Speaker 2: grand before I'm allowed to start using it. Ah. I
- 45:22Speaker 2: like that she's like, oh, I'm really bad at her
- 45:25Speaker 2: a budget gone. Someone else said. For me, it's not
- 45:29Speaker 2: the pomo, it's feeling guilty for not being there. I
- 45:32Speaker 2: feel like I've let my friend down. I get that.
- 45:35Speaker 2: That's why turning up and having a little soda water
- 45:37Speaker 2: instead just be there. Absolutely, like I was talking to
- 45:41Speaker 2: a friend. This is so left or field. But I
- 45:45Speaker 2: was talking to a friend about going to a first
- 45:47Speaker 2: birthday and you all know I'm a new mom. I
- 45:50Speaker 2: am very dad new mum. And I was like, oh,
- 45:52Speaker 2: I really don't want to have to drive because it's
- 45:55Speaker 2: like a two hour drive. It's a regional birthday party.
- 45:57Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, I really don't want to have
- 45:59Speaker 2: to drive. And she's like, like she would so understand
- 46:01Speaker 2: if you didn't go, Like it doesn't matter, and I
- 46:03Speaker 2: was like no, because people remember not the gift you brought.
- 46:07Speaker 2: They don't remember the thing you said or your excuse.
- 46:10Speaker 2: They remember that you were the one that turned up.
- 46:12Speaker 2: And I want to be remembered as that friend. So
- 46:15Speaker 2: just being there is the thing that's going to be remembered,
- 46:18Speaker 2: Not how much you spent or what dinner you had
- 46:20Speaker 2: or the entree you ordered. No one's going to remember
- 46:23Speaker 2: yeap Like, sometimes genuinely, I will ordered an entree because
- 46:26Speaker 2: I'm a little garbage guts and I already ate heaps
- 46:28Speaker 2: of food before I came out of the dinner with you.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Beck like that might just be a choice because I'm
- 46:33Speaker 2: not that hungry totally. Someone else said I always choose
- 46:37Speaker 2: to be the designated driver. I've fun with my friends
- 46:39Speaker 2: regardless of whether I'm drinking or not. Love that. Make
- 46:42Speaker 2: sure your friends are paying you for petrol thcause, like
- 46:44Speaker 2: deserted driver is no longer the cheap option. Someone else said,
- 46:50Speaker 2: challenge your friends to a month of no spend or
- 46:52Speaker 2: only doing activities at home. That way they get involved
- 46:55Speaker 2: to and save some cash.
- 46:57Speaker 4: True.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Someone else said, remember your value and your wife stay
- 47:01Speaker 2: alned girlfriend. Yeah. I think that's a perfect place to
- 47:04Speaker 2: leave it, because so true. Like we are such a
- 47:07Speaker 2: values driven community, and like, let's remember our values. Let's
- 47:11Speaker 2: remember what drives us and have some hard conversations so
- 47:15Speaker 2: that everyone's life can get easier. Perfectly perfectly said, all right, well,
- 47:20Speaker 2: I hope you guys have a beautiful weekend. I hope
- 47:22Speaker 2: that you enjoy money diaries on Monday. Until then, we
