- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here and this hypnosis session is all about
- 0:44light sensitivity and sensory overstimulation.
- 0:48And I was working with a client that had a specific experience
- 0:53that made them have very severe migraines directly connected to
- 0:58either too much brightness and that could be sunlight, that
- 1:02could be screens, it could just be going outdoors or noises.
- 1:06And that could be loud. Noises.
- 1:08It could be conversations, it could be traffic.
- 1:10So effectively what they were doing before working with me was
- 1:14hiding themself away, becoming very much a recluse in dark,
- 1:19quiet environments. And that's good if you're an
- 1:22animal like a bear or a squirrel hibernating, but not so good if
- 1:25you're a human and you want to interact with other people in
- 1:28other situations. So what you're going to hear in
- 1:31this hypnosis session are elements of directly working
- 1:36with the suggestion that these things are recalibrating and
- 1:41adjusting to be OK. And a useful way of thinking
- 1:46about when the body adapts as a result of something traumatic or
- 1:51specific is that the body is healing.
- 1:55And that's a, that's a healing metaphor is quite useful in that
- 1:58context. So think about if you twisted an
- 2:01ankle, it might swell for a period of time, but you get a
- 2:04sense that you have to keep the weight off your ankle for a
- 2:07period of time while it's healing.
- 2:10And that's quite useful to think about that with things like
- 2:14anxiety or overstimulation or migraines, that what if it's a
- 2:18reaction to keep you safe, but it's healing and recalibrating
- 2:23so that it's going to get less and less while it's returning to
- 2:26normal. And that's a very, very powerful
- 2:28suggestion for things like this. And also there is this element
- 2:33of future pacing. So imagining having the
- 2:36resources in the context, but turning a high stakes
- 2:39environment into a low stakes environment.
- 2:41So if you're worried about being in social situations, feeling
- 2:44that you can just leave those social situations early if you
- 2:48don't want to be there, makes you feel that you're not
- 2:51obligated to stay. And that feels empowering
- 2:54because you have more choice. Now, this was created for an
- 2:57individual. So if you have migraines or if
- 3:00you have, let's say, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity,
- 3:04some of these suggestions may be useful, but some of them may be
- 3:07highly relevant to the client I was working with and not quite
- 3:10right for you. So ignore any suggestions that
- 3:13don't fit you like a glove and hone into those that feel
- 3:17empowering and relevant for you. And if you like the idea of
- 3:21working with me directly, take a look in the show notes of the
- 3:24description and you'll see a link to book a free consultation
- 3:27call. We'll have a chat and we can end
- 3:29up working together where I'm your hypnotherapist rather than
- 3:32the guy you listen to on a podcast.
- 3:35So for now, find a quiet, relaxing place.
- 3:38Ideally the kind of place where you're not going to be
- 3:40disturbed, relax and enjoy the session.
- 3:59Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 4:08resourceful feeling of calm and relaxation.
- 4:12And as you exhale, just allow your eyelids to close.
- 4:18And as they close, give yourself permission to settle.
- 4:27And if that means adjusting or repositioning your body to
- 4:32facilitate deeper feelings of relaxation, allow yourself to do
- 4:39that. That's it.
- 4:47And just imagine slowing down the pace of your breathing,
- 4:55breathing in longer and slower, and as you exhale, just allow
- 5:06the outward breath to continue longer than it normally would.
- 5:15In fact, place a hand on your lower belly, and as you breathe
- 5:23in, breathe in, so that hand moves.
- 5:30Many people breathe from the throat or the chest, but just
- 5:35imagine breathing there from the diaphragm, rising on the inward
- 5:40breath, and as you exhale, feeling that hand move again,
- 5:48rising and falling. That's it.
- 5:55Because when you breathe from the lungs, you require effort.
- 6:02When you breathe from the diaphragm, you create that
- 6:07vacuum that automatically expands your lungs, meaning
- 6:13you're breathing deeper and using less energy.
- 6:21That's it. Connect to that slow, long
- 6:25inward breath and relaxing outward exhale.
- 6:34But now imagine when you breathe in or breathing in a feeling of
- 6:41healing, maybe a healing white light breathing in that healing.
- 6:50And as you exhale, just imagine any stress, any worries, any
- 7:01evaluations that weren't true, starts to melt away and leave
- 7:07your body in that outward breath.
- 7:14Almost like breath by breath. It's taking you deeper and
- 7:23deeper, relaxed. The deeper you breathe, the more
- 7:30relaxed you feel. And the more relaxed you feel,
- 7:35the deeper you breathe. That's it.
- 7:44Connect with that wonderful feeling, feeling of ever
- 7:50increasing relaxation. And I want you to come to a
- 8:00logical conclusion here in this moment that as you breathe in
- 8:06and breathe out, all of this is a choice.
- 8:14Choosing to relax, choosing to breathe deeper, everything feels
- 8:22like a choice. And at any moment you could
- 8:27shift, move, open your eyes or stop.
- 8:33And just knowing that creates a wonderful feeling of safety.
- 8:40Because here there's no effort required, no goal to reach,
- 8:48nothing to achieve. Feel that you're just allowing
- 8:54your body to do what it already knows how to do.
- 9:05And as you notice the natural rhythm of your breathing, not
- 9:10changing it, just noticing, you may begin to sense that a subtle
- 9:18feeling of permission is spreading through your body. you
- 9:31to get a sense that everyone in life has a a false alarm, a near
- 9:41miss, an overreaction. And I want you to think of that
- 9:48time when your whole nervous system experience something that
- 9:56in the moment felt overwhelming, but now you know that event
- 10:09wasn't true. It wasn't permanent, and you're
- 10:15already recalibrating, perhaps to something even better than
- 10:23before. And at that moment, your
- 10:31attention, your vigilance, your protective coping strategies
- 10:39were dialed all the way up. Back then, your mind thought
- 10:49that you had to pay attention to every sound, notice everything
- 10:56that you could see in that moment.
- 11:10Awareness became hyper focus. That's it.
- 11:19Relax into that feeling, breathing in deep, exhaling for
- 11:24long as you reflect on that, how wonderful your brain and your
- 11:32body is to do anything to protect you.
- 11:35But what if all of that intense protection was somewhat of an
- 11:47overreaction? And what if that protection is
- 11:56no longer required? So instead of fighting it, what
- 12:05if we allow the nervous system to relax and stand down?
- 12:14And maybe you could imagine a dial, the kind of dial or gauge
- 12:20or fader, perhaps the controls sensory intensity, and without
- 12:29touching it, without effort, you may notice it beginning to turn
- 12:39itself down all by itself, perhaps returning to a
- 12:46comfortable natural baseline. I want you to imagine, just for
- 12:59a moment, that your eyes are not windows, but filters.
- 13:08Sophisticated, intelligent filters.
- 13:14And what if light passes through them only at the level that
- 13:20feels comfortable? Isn't that what your pupil is
- 13:27for? To allow more or less light in
- 13:33depending on what feels useful? And you've had that experience
- 13:40of having your eyes closed and you open them in a bright room
- 13:46and everything seems too bright, but it only takes seconds until
- 13:55your eyes, your brain, recalibrate.
- 13:59If your brain needs less light, your pupils get smaller.
- 14:08And if it's a dark room and you need to see something, maybe
- 14:14your pupils dilate to allow more light in.
- 14:20So imagine your eyes. Your brain knows how much light
- 14:28can pass through them without you feeling uncomfortable.
- 14:38Where sunlight becomes enjoyable, a bright screen
- 14:43becomes functional. A dark room becomes a place of
- 14:50relaxation because your visual system remembers how to do this
- 15:02because it's been doing it automatically your whole life.
- 15:11So allow it to return to normal function effortlessly and you
- 15:19don't need to check it. And you don't even need to test
- 15:23it, because normalization, recalibration and adjustment
- 15:32happens in the background and I wonder if you could imagine
- 15:40sound as distance rather than force.
- 15:51What if a restaurant hum becomes texture, laughter becomes a
- 15:57rhythm, and music becomes movement?
- 16:04Because those people with synesthesia do that anyway.
- 16:12Sounds become colours and colours become textures.
- 16:20Light becomes a feeling. And what if you allow your brain
- 16:27and your nervous system to give light and sound different
- 16:34feelings and meanings so you can handle it much easier?
- 16:43Or give you the ability to simply screen it out by focusing
- 16:54on something else? No one is ever trapped in sound.
- 17:03Sound moves around you, not through you.
- 17:09And if at any point you're in an environment where you wish to
- 17:15leave, you could, because that option always exists.
- 17:26But there's a paradox. Because you know you can leave,
- 17:33your body no longer feels the need to.
- 17:38As you accept the suggestion that safety restores tolerance,
- 17:47The safer you feel, more tolerant of any light and sound
- 17:51or noise your brain and body can handle.
- 18:02I want you to get a feeling then you can manage expectations
- 18:08ahead of time for any busy social situation.
- 18:18Letting people know you may need to leave early means people
- 18:24don't feel confused or annoyed or frustrated if you do, so just
- 18:33allow yourself to make that your own safety net, giving you the
- 18:42option to leave whenever you needed to, but knowing you may
- 18:47not need to leave at all. And I wonder if you could
- 18:57imagine yourself in the near future, not months or years, but
- 19:01days or weeks, and imagine yourself walking into a social
- 19:06space and see that version of you surrounded by bright lights
- 19:16and looking normal. We'll see you in a noisy, loud
- 19:25environment, but sound feels manageable.
- 19:31Observe that future version of you where your body feels
- 19:34present but not alert and certainly not on guard.
- 19:45Step into that future version of you and feel how it would feel
- 19:50to be living that wonderful social life.
- 19:57And just imagine that even if there are bright lights or
- 20:00noises, none of it fazes you. You've chose to be there, and
- 20:09you can choose to leave whenever you want.
- 20:16But I want you to also realize that connection can amplify
- 20:23healing. Smiling faces, the warmth of a
- 20:29hug, laughter, being connected with new information and
- 20:36updates. I want you to get a sense that
- 20:41all of that is good for the body, the mind, and the soul.
- 20:46Humans don't do well when they're isolated.
- 20:50They need connection. And I want you to feel empowered
- 20:57to reconnect because the reconnection assists with the
- 21:04recalibration. Feel what it would feel like to
- 21:10be living with that wonderful feeling that things are back to
- 21:14normal, that healing has been happening quietly, steadily,
- 21:20almost automatically. And then just imagine it's the
- 21:27end of the day and you start thinking of sleep not as a
- 21:36requirement, but as an invitation.
- 21:43Your body already knows how to heal.
- 21:47Sleep simply increases the probability.
- 21:53And so gently, naturally, imagine yourself indulging or
- 22:01enjoying in the rituals that signal safety.
- 22:09Maybe that's reducing screen time earlier.
- 22:16Maybe it's the feeling of warm water on your skin.
- 22:22Maybe that's those slow, long, relaxing breaths.
- 22:29Or perhaps just thinking about all of those things you're
- 22:33grateful for. Not rules, but signals.
- 22:42Signals that your nervous system responds by relaxing and calming
- 22:47down. You will accept the idea that
- 22:52sleep deepens when it's not demanded, and rest restores when
- 23:01it's allowed. And even on nights of light
- 23:06sleep, healing continues. Your body compensates, always
- 23:17has, always will. Take a moment now to sense
- 23:25something profound or fundamental that your system is
- 23:32resilient, your awareness is stabilizing, your life is
- 23:40opening again. Light returns to light and sound
- 23:48returns to sound, and social spaces return to connection and
- 23:57the body remembers. I am safe to live fully again.
- 24:04Every area of your life for work, socially, personally.
- 24:16Imagine what that future's like. Perhaps not just getting back to
- 24:21normal but enhancing it. Sometimes difficult times leap
- 24:33to feeling of deep appreciation for what we have.
- 24:40Connect to that feeling because in a moment I'll invite you to
- 24:47leave this place in your imagination and return back to
- 24:52the here and the now. But you will return back with
- 24:58your eyes less sensitive to light, your ears less sensitive
- 25:04to noise, a deep, deep feeling that your body knows how to
- 25:12sleep, it knows how to relax, but also your social life or
- 25:29very soon get easier. You'll feel more confident and
- 25:37even just attempting signals to your brain that you're ready,
- 25:43which only enhances the healing. And if all parts of your
- 25:48subconscious agree, let me know by nodding your head.
- 25:54That's it. And just think of that in a
- 26:00table of all of your most influential parts helping you
- 26:06now in your social life, in your sleep, in your eyes and in your
- 26:13ears. Bang them all and then float
- 26:16back all the way back to the here and the now.
- 26:20Take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 26:25nose. Just wiggle your fingers, wiggle
- 26:29your toes, connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I
- 26:36now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 26:44Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 26:52Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910 Wide awake,
- 26:57Wide awake. Wide awake.
