- 0:53Speaker 4: For over ten years. During maternity leave, I started an
- 0:57Speaker 4: Instagram page to talk about the perioral dermatie as I
- 1:00Speaker 4: have developed from my pregnancy and birth hormones. That was
- 1:04Speaker 4: ten months ago, and now brands are paying me to
- 1:06Speaker 4: talk about my experiences using their products on my sensitive
- 1:09Speaker 4: dry skin on my Instagram page.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, she's a little influenced.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Some are also asking me for content for their own use.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Even Napoleon Purdose wanted me to make content for a
- 1:20Speaker 4: sunscreen launch in China.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Why does this have to be anonymous? Like, now we
- 1:25Speaker 2: can't perv on her.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That sucks.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Well, maybe we can let her pick if we give
- 1:29Speaker 4: out her little ig encounment.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's not happening. I checked her privacy. I'm going to
- 1:36Speaker 2: ask her for it though, So you guys, I'm going
- 1:38Speaker 2: to see it. You're not.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I've actually got it. I can give it.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Additionally, I'm now writing for beauty blogs and websites. I've
- 1:45Speaker 4: quit my day job finish in a couple of weeks, and.
- 1:48Speaker 2: What's come at me? She's now the beauty blogger.
- 1:51Speaker 4: She's going to be taking over our podcast soon you
- 1:53Speaker 4: watch out, and will be full time influencing and writing
- 1:56Speaker 4: and also being a mum from now on next already
- 2:00Speaker 4: booked for three thousand dollars worth of work.
- 2:02Speaker 1: What holy moly, that's so exciting that should we?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Should we give her a bus?
- 2:08Speaker 4: I need to talk to her all right, let's get
- 2:10Speaker 4: her on the phone. Hello, Money Diarist.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Hi, Toney and Victoria?
- 2:15Speaker 2: How are you who?
- 2:16Speaker 1: She goes? She's and she knows who we are. Oh
- 2:21Speaker 1: that's doesn't make you famous?
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it does a little bit. It does a little bit.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Thank you so much for allowing us to share your
- 2:29Speaker 2: money diary. I'm so excited. As always, we're going to
- 2:32Speaker 2: go through all of the standard money diary questions that
- 2:35Speaker 2: the community knows and loves. Then after the break, we
- 2:39Speaker 2: will get into asking you some more pervy personal questions
- 2:42Speaker 2: based on your responses. How's that sound?
- 2:44Speaker 5: Okay, sounds good to hear what you're going to ask.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, we don't know what we're gonna ask
- 2:49Speaker 2: just yet, so it depends on your responses, my friend.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So let's start with the first question, which is, as always,
- 2:56Speaker 2: what is your attitude towards money?
- 3:00Speaker 5: I think my attitude sports money has just always been
- 3:03Speaker 5: to spend less than I earned, no matter how much
- 3:08Speaker 5: I've earned. I guess because I have kind of had
- 3:11Speaker 5: very different levels of jobs in the corporate world over
- 3:15Speaker 5: the last like ten to eleven years, starting straight after university, Like,
- 3:19Speaker 5: it really has just been spend less on my own
- 3:22Speaker 5: so that I don't go into debt. I'm kind of
- 3:24Speaker 5: staying within my means and that success is owned, so
- 3:30Speaker 5: I have to work hard to make more money.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, So what do you do for work and how
- 3:36Speaker 2: much money do you earn?
- 3:38Speaker 5: So, up until about two weeks ago, I was a
- 3:42Speaker 5: marketing manager for a university and I earned ninety thousand
- 3:46Speaker 5: dollars a year. But as from the email that you
- 3:51Speaker 5: have thread out, I have quit that job now just
- 3:55Speaker 5: to focus on being a mom and also made my
- 4:00Speaker 5: content creation and influencing a full time job. So now
- 4:07Speaker 5: I don't really know what a year's salary will be
- 4:09Speaker 5: like because I haven't been doing it for a year.
- 4:11Speaker 5: But last month I did three thousand dollars work, so
- 4:15Speaker 5: I'm hoping that I can kind of keep that momentum.
- 4:18Speaker 4: That's a lot of money to make from doing something
- 4:21Speaker 4: that you love and that people have recognized that you're
- 4:23Speaker 4: just good at.
- 4:24Speaker 1: That's huge.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I just love it so much. I love it
- 4:27Speaker 5: so much, and I think because it does kind of
- 4:29Speaker 5: lend itself from the marketing arm and I am just
- 4:32Speaker 5: like focusing on something that I love is kind of
- 4:34Speaker 5: bringing to things together.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and it kind of makes sense. When Tony read
- 4:39Speaker 2: out that you were a marketing manager, I was like,
- 4:41Speaker 2: of course she is tricks. Yeah, those guys are always
- 4:45Speaker 2: really good content, so it makes sense. It means that
- 4:48Speaker 2: you've been training your whole life for this. I have
- 4:49Speaker 2: no doubt I have.
- 4:50Speaker 5: I've been training for this exactly exactly.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So what is your big money goal right now?
- 4:57Speaker 5: So money goal right now is kind of a big
- 5:00Speaker 5: life update. Was to save a lot of money because
- 5:04Speaker 5: I'm actually about to move Overseas with my husband and
- 5:08Speaker 5: my son for my husband's job. So we're moving to Canada,
- 5:13Speaker 5: so far away, so far away. So kind of pushed
- 5:20Speaker 5: for me to have to work for myself because he
- 5:25Speaker 5: bout me. I know, it's kind of I had no
- 5:29Speaker 5: idea that I would end up earning any money from
- 5:32Speaker 5: any of this, so it's all just it's meant to be,
- 5:35Speaker 5: meant to be. So the money goal is just to
- 5:40Speaker 5: live off our savings and the income that he has
- 5:44Speaker 5: over there. It's quite expensive obviously the process to get
- 5:47Speaker 5: there living there, but then when we come back, we
- 5:51Speaker 5: want to be able to buy a house back here
- 5:54Speaker 5: in queens in Queensland on the Gold Coast, so beauty. Yeah,
- 5:57Speaker 5: that's kind of our long term next couple of years ago.
- 6:02Speaker 2: It's going to be a bit of a weather shock
- 6:03Speaker 2: for you, my friend. You're going to go from funny
- 6:06Speaker 2: Queensland over to Canada, where you actually have to wear
- 6:09Speaker 2: snow boots on your way to work.
- 6:11Speaker 5: I'm no, I'm not even taking like hardly any clothes
- 6:14Speaker 5: because there's no points. I'm just gonna buy everything there. Yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 5: and the hope that I can adjust.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So did you currently invest?
- 6:23Speaker 5: Yes, we do. We only started last year though, I
- 6:26Speaker 5: have been fortunate enough that as much as I don't
- 6:30Speaker 5: like talking about about finances, which is so funny, I'm
- 6:34Speaker 5: on a finance podcast right now. My mom is a
- 6:38Speaker 5: financial planner.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, she she.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Is, actually, but it's not my financial planner because I
- 6:44Speaker 5: never want to talk about money, so it's just so funny.
- 6:46Speaker 5: But and my brother works in options trading. Oh my god.
- 6:51Speaker 2: So you're all finance and you're like, I'm still not
- 6:53Speaker 2: listening to you. I'll be your financial yann It's okay.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Yeah, basically, I just oh, well, I don't have one still,
- 7:00Speaker 5: so that would be great.
- 7:01Speaker 2: So then when you guys get back from Canada, hit
- 7:03Speaker 2: me up and we can do advice. You can stay
- 7:05Speaker 2: in Queensland. It's all good.
- 7:08Speaker 5: That would be absolutely perfect.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Can you imagine if the way I got new clients
- 7:12Speaker 2: with money diy money diaries, and I got your money
- 7:15Speaker 2: diaries and they're like mini interviews to be my client.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And then we got off the phone.
- 7:19Speaker 5: Quite brilliant, because then you know where I could sit
- 7:21Speaker 5: together if we're clients, it would be I.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Think you and I we're a dream team. I reckon.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Compliments each other perfectly.
- 7:32Speaker 1: We're going to get off the phone.
- 7:36Speaker 2: She's picking up what I'm putting down.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's a done deal. Do you guys
- 7:40Speaker 1: want me to last?
- 7:41Speaker 2: If you could just leave, we've got work to do.
- 7:45Speaker 5: I can't even remember what the question was now it
- 7:47Speaker 5: doesn't matter.
- 7:49Speaker 2: But we've learned that money Diarist's mum is actually a
- 7:51Speaker 2: financial advisor.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And she's got a financial advisor. Now it's you.
- 7:56Speaker 5: You're my financial circle.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Oh.
- 8:02Speaker 5: I remember my brother he worked in options anyway, So
- 8:05Speaker 5: I hadn't invested into anything until last year. And it
- 8:10Speaker 5: was because my brother, who basically was spending all day
- 8:14Speaker 5: every day looking at charts, was saying, if you're going
- 8:17Speaker 5: to do it, you should do it now, like when
- 8:19Speaker 5: COVID was happening.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 5: So yes, So we had a lot of all of
- 8:25Speaker 5: our savings because we weren't able to travel and we
- 8:28Speaker 5: just had a baby, and we were just kind of
- 8:31Speaker 5: had all our money in cash, and so he convinced
- 8:34Speaker 5: us to start investing them. So that's when we put
- 8:38Speaker 5: money into like some specific companies.
- 8:40Speaker 2: And that's so exciting for those of you playing a
- 8:45Speaker 2: lot at home. What happened during COVID was a lot
- 8:48Speaker 2: of markets crashed because they couldn't either be sustained or
- 8:52Speaker 2: people were really you know, a lot of fear was
- 8:54Speaker 2: happening in the market at that point in time, which
- 8:56Speaker 2: meant that the share market decreased in value. Money, Dorist,
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm assuming has put some money in at a low
- 9:03Speaker 2: point in the market, which is actually the time of
- 9:05Speaker 2: most opportunity, and I'm assuming money Dorist. Am I right
- 9:09Speaker 2: when I say you've probably done pretty well over the
- 9:11Speaker 2: last six months.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I absolutely have this career. You are on the money.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you, And she's witty.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I love her dream client dream cla.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Right, we'll move away from investments and ask do you
- 9:25Speaker 2: currently have any debts?
- 9:27Speaker 5: No that we don't own a house, No, not yet,
- 9:32Speaker 5: we've not yet. We plan to have debt when we
- 9:35Speaker 5: buy a house, but we don't have any credit cards
- 9:40Speaker 5: that we're renting at the moment, and we paid for
- 9:43Speaker 5: our cars outright. We yeah, we pretty much always try
- 9:48Speaker 5: to stick with the like living within our means. So yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 5: no debt, that's the moment.
- 9:53Speaker 2: So that's a beautiful mentality, and I think a lot
- 9:56Speaker 2: of people are listening to it being like wow, like
- 9:58Speaker 2: I wish that was me. Have you ever been in debt?
- 10:03Speaker 5: No?
- 10:03Speaker 2: So what do you haven't stopped you from getting in debt?
- 10:06Speaker 2: Like obviously growing up, you know, we live in I
- 10:10Speaker 2: would say, the age of Instagram at the moment where
- 10:12Speaker 2: you know, everything.
- 10:13Speaker 5: Is forced to us.
- 10:14Speaker 2: A lot of us feel like we should be spending
- 10:16Speaker 2: more than we're earning. How have you managed to slip
- 10:19Speaker 2: through the cracks of not ever being in debt and
- 10:22Speaker 2: having no consumer debt? Like what does that look like?
- 10:24Speaker 4: Especially with a career on Instagram now as well?
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, career on Instagram. You've got a husband, Yeah,
- 10:31Speaker 2: you've got a husband, You've got a baby, Like, what
- 10:33Speaker 2: have you done?
- 10:34Speaker 1: I want to learn?
- 10:37Speaker 5: So basically, I think from when I was like at
- 10:40Speaker 5: university and I was working like in retail, and I've
- 10:44Speaker 5: always had a credit card. So it's not that I
- 10:46Speaker 5: don't have a credit card. I do that because I
- 10:49Speaker 5: want the credit score and everything that comes associated to
- 10:53Speaker 5: it and like being able to learn down to learn
- 10:56Speaker 5: to pay off my debt. But I think having a
- 10:59Speaker 5: financial planner for a mom just in the back of
- 11:02Speaker 5: your head like drills down, like budgeting and knowing what
- 11:07Speaker 5: bills are going to be able to come in and
- 11:09Speaker 5: how much are you're going to be earning in that
- 11:11Speaker 5: fortnight or that month, and identifying the gap of how
- 11:15Speaker 5: much money you have left over. Now, I won't say
- 11:17Speaker 5: I've always been the best saver, like that money that
- 11:20Speaker 5: was left over. I love shopping, loves beauty of costs,
- 11:25Speaker 5: and so I'm big on spending that. But I think
- 11:28Speaker 5: the way, the thing that drives me the most to
- 11:31Speaker 5: never go into that is I've always had goals, financial
- 11:34Speaker 5: goals of things that I'm saving for. If I don't
- 11:36Speaker 5: have that, I tend to just like chuck money around
- 11:39Speaker 5: everywhere without really thinking about it. But I think just
- 11:42Speaker 5: having goals and always like working hard. I've definitely increased
- 11:48Speaker 5: my income and along with that increased costs. But yeah,
- 11:52Speaker 5: just having goals kind of keeps me accountable. And We've
- 11:55Speaker 5: done a lot of traveling, so I've kind of just
- 11:57Speaker 5: always had that in the back of my mind.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, do you think having a mom that was a
- 12:01Speaker 2: financial advisor, regardless of whether you know you let her
- 12:04Speaker 2: be your advisor, which, in all honesty, I love my
- 12:07Speaker 2: mom to death, but you best believe I would never
- 12:10Speaker 2: let her be my financial advisor, mainly because she's an
- 12:13Speaker 2: autopsy technician. Do you reckon? That's probably why? Probably anyway,
- 12:19Speaker 2: So do you think that having a mom is a
- 12:21Speaker 2: financial advisor set you up a little bit differently when
- 12:25Speaker 2: it came to money, even though you probably weren't wanting financially.
- 12:29Speaker 5: So yeah, I think so, because I definitely don't have
- 12:33Speaker 5: her as my financial advisor fame as you, I think
- 12:36Speaker 5: I want to keep those relationships separate. But I think
- 12:41Speaker 5: just seeing her and how she has worked with mine.
- 12:45Speaker 5: She's a single mom, My parents are separated, and so
- 12:48Speaker 5: I've always just kind of watched her with finances on
- 12:52Speaker 5: the single income and how to like we don't come
- 12:56Speaker 5: from like a wealthy whether it's like average kind of
- 13:00Speaker 5: situation that a lot of Australians would be in, and
- 13:03Speaker 5: so she's kind of had to be very good at budgeting.
- 13:06Speaker 5: And I think I'm the oldest child, like I have
- 13:09Speaker 5: a younger brother, so I've been aware of what like
- 13:14Speaker 5: how far money can go, and you really have to
- 13:17Speaker 5: be careful with what you spend, otherwise you don't have
- 13:20Speaker 5: money to live.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I guess it's true.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Yeah, so I feel like I'm just aware that you
- 13:27Speaker 5: need money, and budgeting has just been always such a
- 13:30Speaker 5: big part of our life.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Yeah, And I guess it's important to point out that,
- 13:34Speaker 2: you know, we don't create our own money stories, but
- 13:38Speaker 2: we are a product of our environment, right, Like, if
- 13:40Speaker 2: we are being surrounded by people making good money decisions
- 13:43Speaker 2: and having conversations around money, it's very likely that you
- 13:47Speaker 2: are too going to be making good money decisions because
- 13:50Speaker 2: that's just what you were taught. And yeah, I found
- 13:52Speaker 2: people who are in debt and you know, see a
- 13:56Speaker 2: credit card as just a tool to use. You just
- 13:58Speaker 2: grow up thinking, all right, well, credit cards great, Like
- 14:01Speaker 2: I use credit card, my parents use credit cards. It's fine,
- 14:03Speaker 2: Like it's not actually in your control. But sometimes people
- 14:07Speaker 2: grow up and they're like, oh, I didn't actually realize
- 14:09Speaker 2: that my good money habits came from the factor that
- 14:11Speaker 2: I was just surrounded by great money habits. And a
- 14:13Speaker 2: lot of people think that you learn it in your
- 14:16Speaker 2: early twenties, when in reality, it's been ingrained in you
- 14:19Speaker 2: since you were seven years old, which is cool to
- 14:21Speaker 2: think about, but also so interesting to start asking other people, Hey,
- 14:25Speaker 2: where do you think that came from? Like why have
- 14:26Speaker 2: you never been in debt despite the fact that you're
- 14:29Speaker 2: a millennial and you know you've grown up in the
- 14:32Speaker 2: same age as we have. How did that work?
- 14:35Speaker 4: And also the common misconception that good money habits come
- 14:38Speaker 4: from being from a wealthy family.
- 14:41Speaker 2: No, it's just not true, absolutely not. And I've said
- 14:44Speaker 2: this before, and I know we're not meant to be
- 14:45Speaker 2: having the conversation now, We're meant to be asking question
- 14:47Speaker 2: now that her heart's my podcast, Don't do what I Want.
- 14:51Speaker 2: It's interesting because some of my wealthiest clients are the
- 14:54Speaker 2: ones that don't have the biggest incomes. They're the ones
- 14:57Speaker 2: that have actually just been really consistent and really understand
- 15:00Speaker 2: owning of their budget, and you know, they understood the
- 15:02Speaker 2: value of a dollar. And while so I can't say
- 15:04Speaker 2: I've been their financial advisor, you know from the very start,
- 15:07Speaker 2: because they've been doing this for the past forty fifty years,
- 15:11Speaker 2: they've come to me and you can just see that
- 15:12Speaker 2: consistency and see their history and see why they're in
- 15:16Speaker 2: that position and they're not on six figure incomes. They're
- 15:18Speaker 2: on you know, five figure, really normal incomes that put
- 15:23Speaker 2: them in a preferential space. And I just think there's
- 15:25Speaker 2: so much power to it. And that's why I guess
- 15:27Speaker 2: we're here me trying to share more stories.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I love that. That's really nice.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Well, do you want to get to the other question?
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yep, Sorry, many tyris. We've really got.
- 15:36Speaker 2: We've gotten off crack, but I think it was a
- 15:38Speaker 2: good derail. But let's jump back on the train of questions.
- 15:41Speaker 2: The next question is what is your best money habit?
- 15:45Speaker 5: Oh, my best money habit, I think paying off their
- 15:48Speaker 5: credit cards and looking through my life bank account apps,
- 15:52Speaker 5: like just to know where my money is going. I
- 15:55Speaker 5: think out a side, out of mind. It's definitely a
- 15:58Speaker 5: problem for me. And if I'm not looking at what
- 16:01Speaker 5: I'm spending, I go into this vortex of just spending, spending, spending,
- 16:06Speaker 5: and that definitely happened, has happened to me before. And
- 16:09Speaker 5: I've even had to go to my husband. We share
- 16:11Speaker 5: a bank account, but he's never like come to me
- 16:13Speaker 5: and be like, why are you spending this? But I
- 16:15Speaker 5: have to go to him and be like, can we
- 16:18Speaker 5: like that? I called it Money Mondays, and I was like,
- 16:20Speaker 5: oh my god.
- 16:21Speaker 2: You do you want to do the content shades on
- 16:23Speaker 2: the money moving forward?
- 16:25Speaker 5: Oh my god, I absolutely can in the world moving Canada, Yes,
- 16:30Speaker 5: money mondays. And that's when I sit down with him
- 16:33Speaker 5: and we go through our bank app and which has
- 16:37Speaker 5: all of our accounts in it and our like trading
- 16:40Speaker 5: and shares and blah blah blah, and I'm like, can
- 16:43Speaker 5: we just go through it so that I can see
- 16:45Speaker 5: it and understand every single thing that we're kind of
- 16:48Speaker 5: spending and most of it's me spending, but it just.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Makes me accountaful aware of it.
- 16:53Speaker 5: I think seeing accountaful, I'm aware. I think that's my
- 16:55Speaker 5: biggest thing, is like I make an effort to be
- 16:58Speaker 5: aware of what I'm spending, and then I am much
- 17:00Speaker 5: more conscious.
- 17:01Speaker 2: And that's half the battle, right, That's the one thing
- 17:03Speaker 2: that we all bury our heads in the sand about.
- 17:05Speaker 2: We don't want to just be faced with what we're spending.
- 17:07Speaker 2: And if you can jump that hurdle, you can jump
- 17:10Speaker 2: any money hurdle.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Yes, And because I am definitely an impulse spender and
- 17:16Speaker 5: if no one checks me and I just go out
- 17:19Speaker 5: and like, like all these brands are having these trails
- 17:22Speaker 5: and you our credit card number off by heart. And
- 17:28Speaker 5: my husband was like, that's the problem, because why do
- 17:32Speaker 5: our credit card number off by heart?
- 17:33Speaker 2: She's a genius. She's just really good with numbers. Her
- 17:36Speaker 2: mum's a financial advisor. Why don't you understand if you
- 17:40Speaker 2: need me to back you up, I've got you.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Okay, thank you.
- 17:44Speaker 1: All right?
- 17:44Speaker 2: And what is your worst money habit.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Also the fact that I am an impulse spender. I
- 17:53Speaker 5: think that sometimes I do find it hard to put
- 17:58Speaker 5: I know you have the rule of putting like twenty
- 18:00Speaker 5: four hours between yourself and a person.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I do really I that.
- 18:05Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, I've heard that. I try to implement it,
- 18:10Speaker 5: but I don't always do that.
- 18:12Speaker 2: It's harder.
- 18:15Speaker 5: Yes, definitely. Things are shiny and I need it, Like basically,
- 18:19Speaker 5: I really struggle to do that. I go through weeks
- 18:23Speaker 5: where I'm like, I'm so good at this and I
- 18:25Speaker 5: have like goals. Well it's just the same as like
- 18:27Speaker 5: a diet, like I feel like start off really well
- 18:29Speaker 5: and then I fall off.
- 18:31Speaker 2: But that's so true, and most people do want budgets,
- 18:34Speaker 2: and that's why you just want to have some kind
- 18:36Speaker 2: of life rules where you're trying to work towards them.
- 18:39Speaker 2: But do you know what, it's okay if you sometimes
- 18:41Speaker 2: fall off the bandwagon, it's impart of you.
- 18:43Speaker 5: Guys definitely fall off. Yeah, so I probably fall off
- 18:47Speaker 5: for a few weeks and then I recognize myself and
- 18:52Speaker 5: then I so often start again and so consistent and overtime,
- 18:56Speaker 5: consistently it is everything, absolutely every single week, like it
- 19:04Speaker 5: all does add up, and when you see the result
- 19:07Speaker 5: in your bank, like it drives you and keeps motivating me.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. I want to keep this conversation going, but
- 19:13Speaker 2: we do have to take a quick break, so we'll
- 19:15Speaker 2: jump back into the questions in just a moment. Okay,
- 19:27Speaker 2: now we're back from the break, Tony, I feel like
- 19:29Speaker 2: we've got a golden opportunity here to ask some really
- 19:32Speaker 2: heavy questions about how influencers get paid because we see
- 19:36Speaker 2: all over Instagram paid or you know, paid sponsorship, That's
- 19:40Speaker 2: what I said, But we don't often get to see
- 19:42Speaker 2: how that happens, especially from someone who's just new to
- 19:45Speaker 2: the industry, Like, how do you crack into it? So
- 19:47Speaker 2: money diarist, how did you begin your influencer journey? Is
- 19:51Speaker 2: that what we're going to call it?
- 19:52Speaker 5: Oh? Yeah, influencer journey sounds accurate to me. So it's
- 19:58Speaker 5: quite interesting because I I started my Instagram account last
- 20:03Speaker 5: July so twenty twenty was during the pandemic. I was
- 20:08Speaker 5: on maternity leave with my little boy, Charlie, and I
- 20:13Speaker 5: hadn't gone back to work yet, so I was at
- 20:16Speaker 5: home and I was really kind of struggling with my identity,
- 20:22Speaker 5: like I was diagnosed with for partum depression, and so
- 20:26Speaker 5: I was very aware that I liked work and I
- 20:30Speaker 5: liked to be doing things for myself as well and
- 20:34Speaker 5: feeling like I'm being able to help other people. And
- 20:38Speaker 5: I developed very oral dermatitis also while I was on
- 20:42Speaker 5: maternity leave looking after my little boy, which I won.
- 20:46Speaker 5: I had never had it before. I didn't know what
- 20:47Speaker 5: it was. I thought it was like hormonal act basically,
- 20:50Speaker 5: if you don't know what it is, it's like all
- 20:52Speaker 5: these red, little dry bumps that go around your chin
- 20:57Speaker 5: up to your nose and even on the corner of
- 21:00Speaker 5: your eyes. And I didn't even know as a doctor
- 21:04Speaker 5: for Charlie and I was like, oh, can you look
- 21:07Speaker 5: at my face? And they were like, oh, it's Perry
- 21:09Speaker 5: old damitis. I was like, what is that? Never heard
- 21:13Speaker 5: of it before. I had to go away and do
- 21:14Speaker 5: all my research and I changed all my skin care.
- 21:18Speaker 5: And I had never been part of the skincare community
- 21:21Speaker 5: before getting very old dampires like that my own my
- 21:25Speaker 5: personal social media. I loved makeup, but I was not
- 21:29Speaker 5: spending a lot of time in that space. And I
- 21:31Speaker 5: just started my Instagram page basically to share my journey
- 21:36Speaker 5: after I was able to clear it, and like, what's
- 21:38Speaker 5: that process look like? Just from a personal point of view,
- 21:41Speaker 5: not to like be a doctor to anyone, but just
- 21:43Speaker 5: say this is what I had.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and it sounds like you're an educated woman sharing
- 21:48Speaker 2: a journey, and like that's something that I don't know
- 21:50Speaker 2: if I was going through that, That's exactly what i'd
- 21:52Speaker 2: be looking for.
- 21:53Speaker 5: Well, that was it. Like when I had it, I
- 21:55Speaker 5: didn't know anyone else with it, and I just felt
- 21:58Speaker 5: so alone, and so I was like, oh, maybe this
- 22:00Speaker 5: will help one at least one person, and then just
- 22:03Speaker 5: started sharing all of the skincare that I was enjoying
- 22:07Speaker 5: and buying, and because at that stage I was just
- 22:10Speaker 5: I wasn't going to pay for anything. I was just
- 22:12Speaker 5: showing things that I had in my house with my
- 22:16Speaker 5: terrible photography back then because I didn't I didn't have
- 22:20Speaker 5: those skills, Like I've been in marketing for ten years
- 22:22Speaker 5: life from wright, but learning the Instagram world is completely
- 22:28Speaker 5: like a whole news side that I had to upskill myself.
- 22:31Speaker 5: And yeah, brands were like could just tell that I
- 22:34Speaker 5: had the authenticity and I wasn't filtered and basically everything
- 22:40Speaker 5: was unedited and it was like a real person that
- 22:44Speaker 5: was a mom going through skin issues and sharing things
- 22:47Speaker 5: that were working for her. And I guess that's been
- 22:51Speaker 5: a great thing for me because at the moment, brands
- 22:54Speaker 5: are looking exactly for people like me. So yeah, it's
- 22:58Speaker 5: been really good.
- 22:59Speaker 2: How good is that? And I feel like in twenty
- 23:01Speaker 2: twenty one, you know, Tony and I we have Instagram,
- 23:04Speaker 2: We're on it all the time, and I just can
- 23:07Speaker 2: see through brands campaigns that aren't exactly transparent. I can
- 23:11Speaker 2: see if it's not a wholesome, you know, really open conversation,
- 23:15Speaker 2: and I just it makes me, It gives me what
- 23:18Speaker 2: I call the eg Like it just makes me go
- 23:20Speaker 2: like I can't be bothered, Like I just want to
- 23:22Speaker 2: see real people doing real things and real reviews. And
- 23:26Speaker 2: you know, I've stretched into that space now too, and
- 23:29Speaker 2: I'm really grateful for it. It's a bit weird, isn't
- 23:31Speaker 2: it Influencing? Yeah, but I say no to ninety nine
- 23:35Speaker 2: percent of the story that comes through because it's just
- 23:38Speaker 2: it's not honest, it's not authentic, it's not what I
- 23:41Speaker 2: want to do. And you know, I do accept like
- 23:44Speaker 2: complimentary products only if I'm already using them or only
- 23:47Speaker 2: if I genuinely want to try them. And one of
- 23:49Speaker 2: my favorite skincare brands, Oh, I felt like I've made
- 23:52Speaker 2: it like I'm obsessed with I don't know if you know,
- 23:55Speaker 2: Aspect Skincare, but I post about them all the time.
- 23:58Speaker 2: And then because I was posting about them, they sent
- 24:00Speaker 2: me a couple of little prezzies and I was, honestly,
- 24:04Speaker 2: I was so grateful for it. So obviously I spoke
- 24:06Speaker 2: about them. But I feel like that makes me an influencer,
- 24:08Speaker 2: right Tony, I think so, Yeah, thank you. I was
- 24:11Speaker 2: very grateful for it. But just like you, I'm a
- 24:12Speaker 2: bit of a skincare fine. But I guess my question
- 24:16Speaker 2: is how did it start for you? Did someone just
- 24:18Speaker 2: slide into your DMS and offer you some product or
- 24:21Speaker 2: did you reach out to them or how does this
- 24:23Speaker 2: how does it kick off?
- 24:25Speaker 5: So to me, I was posting specifically about the products
- 24:29Speaker 5: that helped my parro old dermatitis, and so I was
- 24:34Speaker 5: using Mugu Biology skincare and Ultra Violet. And I think
- 24:38Speaker 5: that the brand just saw me tagging them and like
- 24:42Speaker 5: kind of responding to them and like they DM and
- 24:46Speaker 5: eventually Like Biology reached out to me and they said
- 24:49Speaker 5: that they would be happy to send me some products
- 24:54Speaker 5: and a disc out code to be able to use
- 24:58Speaker 5: with my audience. So I wasn't getting paid, but it
- 25:03Speaker 5: was like a test, I guess, like to see if
- 25:05Speaker 5: my audience was truly engaged. And so we did that
- 25:09Speaker 5: for six weeks and they had forty seven unique code
- 25:13Speaker 5: redemptions follow I had four hundred followers at this time.
- 25:19Speaker 5: I was a baby.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, that conversion.
- 25:22Speaker 2: That's cool, that American's dream and what we care about.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Like obviously we have an Instagram account and whenever we
- 25:29Speaker 2: talk brands, they always ask what our engagement rate is.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yours must be massive.
- 25:36Speaker 5: It is quite a good conversion. And I ended up
- 25:39Speaker 5: working with them for four and a half months and
- 25:42Speaker 5: I did two hundred and seventy eight conversions in that
- 25:45Speaker 5: time and over twenty thousand dollars in sales for und.
- 25:50Speaker 2: So good that I bet that stoked with you. So
- 25:53Speaker 2: to move a little bit away from the influencer stuff
- 25:56Speaker 2: for a minute, how have you budgeted to move to Canada?
- 25:59Speaker 2: How's that going to work? Especially you know you said
- 26:01Speaker 2: before that your husband is still studying and you're moving
- 26:04Speaker 2: for that. How's that all going? So?
- 26:09Speaker 5: Basically with budgets that we will be using most of
- 26:13Speaker 5: our savings. We did make Aditial an initial spreadsheet kind
- 26:18Speaker 5: of with all the past that we had to do
- 26:20Speaker 5: in order to move and the rough cost of what
- 26:24Speaker 5: we thought that would be, and we've kind of just
- 26:27Speaker 5: been sicking throughout to do lists. So and then we've
- 26:30Speaker 5: just created like a buffer amount in our savings that
- 26:33Speaker 5: we are not touching that we're just using for our
- 26:36Speaker 5: time over in Canada, because until we get his salary
- 26:41Speaker 5: over there, which is much lower than it is in
- 26:44Speaker 5: Australia being a training program, we won't have the income
- 26:50Speaker 5: that we have here. I've quit my job, as I said,
- 26:52Speaker 5: I was earning quite a bit of money, and now
- 26:55Speaker 5: the money that I'll be earning from my content and
- 26:58Speaker 5: influencing will really become our discretionary income at that point,
- 27:03Speaker 5: an opportunity to do more fun things while we're over there.
- 27:06Speaker 4: What was their number you guys came up with to
- 27:09Speaker 4: save that you would need to move over If you
- 27:12Speaker 4: don't mind me asking.
- 27:14Speaker 5: We said that we wanted to save one hundred thousand
- 27:17Speaker 5: dollars whole.
- 27:18Speaker 2: That is much more than I thought you were any
- 27:21Speaker 2: But what does that comprise of? How did you come
- 27:24Speaker 2: up with that budget? Because it kind of makes sense
- 27:26Speaker 2: given you're moving over there for your husband's training program,
- 27:29Speaker 2: which I'm assuming you know he's not going to be
- 27:31Speaker 2: earning that much. You have a young child, do a
- 27:34Speaker 2: lot to pay for you?
- 27:36Speaker 5: Yes, so we do have a young child who we
- 27:40Speaker 5: do want to go to childcare Cindy over there two
- 27:44Speaker 5: days a week. I'll be at home, and yes, I'll
- 27:47Speaker 5: be doing content work, but he adorees going to Kindy
- 27:50Speaker 5: and the socialization and what he's been learning. So I
- 27:52Speaker 5: definitely want to continue that for some kind of normalcy
- 27:55Speaker 5: while we're over there, and we don't get any subsidy,
- 27:58Speaker 5: so we need to have a lot of money for that.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Rents over there, yes, Rents over there is somewhere between
- 28:07Speaker 5: three to four thousand dollars a month, so room apartment. Yeah,
- 28:14Speaker 5: and then we also needed money for like flite for
- 28:17Speaker 5: these is we had to get Charlie like a passport.
- 28:20Speaker 5: We have like all of our storage costs because we
- 28:24Speaker 5: are coming back after a year, so we're paying for
- 28:27Speaker 5: everything to be in storage. We want to be able
- 28:32Speaker 5: to travel. It might just be within Canada, but we
- 28:35Speaker 5: want to be able to have money to do holidays
- 28:37Speaker 5: while we're over there.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, and then.
- 28:39Speaker 1: We enjoy and then yeah.
- 28:42Speaker 5: Yeah. And the thing is that it might sound like
- 28:44Speaker 5: a lot of money, one hundred thousand dollars, but that
- 28:47Speaker 5: is money. Also, that is enough for when we come
- 28:50Speaker 5: back that I won't have a job besides content and
- 28:53Speaker 5: we'll have to buy a car.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Planned that far ahead like that makes planning.
- 28:57Speaker 5: For Yeah, it plans not only for the next year,
- 29:00Speaker 5: but the year after that. So really it's a two
- 29:03Speaker 5: year plan. And then after that we have zero dollars.
- 29:05Speaker 2: So gosh, I don't.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Ever want to be down at zero.
- 29:08Speaker 2: I'm sure the planning you do, you're not going to
- 29:11Speaker 2: get down to zero.
- 29:12Speaker 1: It definitely sounds like you're on about but I also.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Think it's a really important planner.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and I also think it's really important to point
- 29:19Speaker 2: out that this isn't like you being twenty one moving
- 29:22Speaker 2: overseas for a couple of years to you know, find
- 29:25Speaker 2: your feet and you know, find out who you are.
- 29:27Speaker 2: You actually have a young family, You've got a husband
- 29:29Speaker 2: who's just finished this epics study and going to do
- 29:32Speaker 2: a year of residency, which is you know, going to
- 29:34Speaker 2: turbo charge his career hopefully. So it's kind of like
- 29:37Speaker 2: an investment into your own future. And that's why I'm
- 29:40Speaker 2: so pervy on people's savings goals, because you know, Tony,
- 29:44Speaker 2: if you'd said, hey, we're going to talk to someone
- 29:45Speaker 2: today who's saved one hundred thousand dollars, I'd be like,
- 29:48Speaker 2: is it for a house deposit?
- 29:50Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 29:50Speaker 1: Well that's what people save for now.
- 29:52Speaker 4: It's kind of like, oh, well, you can't do anything
- 29:55Speaker 4: that isn't saving for a house until you save for
- 29:57Speaker 4: a house.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that has to be your first tipbox.
- 29:59Speaker 4: But I really like the way that you just put
- 30:01Speaker 4: that V like that it's an investment into your family
- 30:04Speaker 4: and your future, because I think people so often see
- 30:07Speaker 4: investment as purely dollars and cents, when an investment can
- 30:11Speaker 4: be so much more. You're investing into your relationship, your
- 30:14Speaker 4: memories for your son, you know, all of these things
- 30:17Speaker 4: that you're just not going to get in any other situation, like, hey,
- 30:20Speaker 4: you could buy a house right now, but oh my god,
- 30:21Speaker 4: you're going on this amazing adventure.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that investment is so much more right,
- 30:26Speaker 2: Like we invest in everything, and as you said before,
- 30:29Speaker 2: it's memories, Like it's also like mental health, Like that's
- 30:32Speaker 2: to make sure that you know, you don't go crazy
- 30:34Speaker 2: creeped up in another country away from your family and friends,
- 30:37Speaker 2: and you know, your son still gets to go to
- 30:39Speaker 2: KINDI and have a really good time. And yeah, I
- 30:42Speaker 2: just love that you've taken so much time and thought
- 30:44Speaker 2: to put into it, because yeah, it was a bit
- 30:45Speaker 2: shocked when you said one hundred thousand dollars, But that's.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Like such a long game. That makes sense.
- 30:51Speaker 5: Yeah, it makes It's a long game. Yeah. And also
- 30:54Speaker 5: I am Yeah, I'm thirty, and we're both in our
- 30:58Speaker 5: thirties and we have a young family. I'm sure we
- 31:01Speaker 5: could do it like a lot cheaper, but I am
- 31:05Speaker 5: at a point in my life I'm like, I want
- 31:06Speaker 5: to live as if I was living here. Yeah, And
- 31:09Speaker 5: so yeah, I know it's a lot of money, and
- 31:12Speaker 5: it won't all be spent while we're over there, but
- 31:14Speaker 5: that's everything. That's our emergency money. That's everything.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And hopefully your influencer work picks up and you know
- 31:22Speaker 2: you're able to actually just fund the rent each month
- 31:24Speaker 2: because three grand coming in that to rent covered my friend.
- 31:27Speaker 5: Wow, well, I've already had brands reach out to be
- 31:29Speaker 5: to send me stuff in my Canadian address.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, that's so exciting.
- 31:34Speaker 5: I'm already forward working at the moment, like I have
- 31:37Speaker 5: an addressed whether sending up to already.
- 31:40Speaker 1: So she's asler. I love it.
- 31:42Speaker 2: I'm going to have the creepy stalk of you when
- 31:45Speaker 2: we're all to do. But for those of you following
- 31:47Speaker 2: along who also want to find our money diarist, are
- 31:51Speaker 2: you willing to share the dates?
- 31:54Speaker 5: Yes? You can find me on Instagram. My handle is
- 31:58Speaker 5: Amanda's Cute.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Space, Amanda's Cute Face.
- 32:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Oh I love that.
- 32:03Speaker 1: That's so sweet.
- 32:05Speaker 2: I'm going to go follow you now. I'm very excited
- 32:07Speaker 2: to see your content, and to be honest, I kind
- 32:09Speaker 2: of feel like we're discovering someone before they're popular. So
- 32:12Speaker 2: if we all go follow her, we can be like yeah,
- 32:13Speaker 2: well we were following her.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Oh my god, follow Amanda. We followed her when she
- 32:17Speaker 1: lived in Australia.
- 32:18Speaker 2: She wasn't even verified when I started following her. That's
- 32:22Speaker 2: what we're all going to say. Anyway.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I think we're done here. We're done here, Money.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Diarist, Yes, all right, all right, let's go. I think
- 32:31Speaker 2: we've got a million things to do and we will

- 32:35Speaker 2: much for joining us. We really really appreciate it.
- 32:39Speaker 5: Thank you for having me.
- 32:40Speaker 2: And as always, just before we head off, we'd like
- 32:43Speaker 2: to acknowledge and pay respect to Australia's aboriginal and tourist
- 32:46Speaker 2: rate island of Peoples. They're the traditional custodians of the lands,
- 32:50Speaker 2: the waterways and the skies all across Australia. Well, thank
- 32:53Speaker 2: you for sharing and for caring for the land on
- 32:55Speaker 2: which we are able to learn. We pay our respects
- 32:58Speaker 2: to elders past and present, and we share we are
