- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome back to I Care about yout, the podcast
- 0:05where we talk about ourselves and how to make life just
- 0:09richer and better and more incredible than it was yesterday.
- 0:14I'm your host, Juliana Jay. And today I'm
- 0:17talking about something that came up for me and a
- 0:22couple of friends and we had this conversation
- 0:26around what are some of the
- 0:30fears that were taught to us or that we
- 0:34somehow looking for my little notepad of what
- 0:39are the fears that other people have instilled in us? Whether it's
- 0:43our own fears around
- 0:48people and strangers and doing
- 0:51new things, trying new things,
- 0:55speaking your mind. There's so many
- 0:59fears that we have that come into play all the
- 1:03time, during the day, constantly. And so
- 1:07many of the fears are subconscious at
- 1:11this point because we've been using them to drive how we think about things
- 1:15for quite a long time now. And they're just running in the background
- 1:19all the time, right? You go into a store and
- 1:23there's people there you don't know. And there's a little bit of trepidation around
- 1:28asking people for help or talking to someone.
- 1:33And often that stems from something we
- 1:37learned quite a long time ago in our lives that is
- 1:41just, it's playing in the background. Be careful of strangers. Be leery of
- 1:45strangers. Now, of course, we do have to be careful about
- 1:50how we engage with people we don't know and
- 1:54that we make sure we are being safe. But are we taking it
- 1:58too far sometimes? Or are we. Is that fear
- 2:02stopping us from learning about
- 2:07other people, from meeting new people, from making friends? You know, there's such a,
- 2:12a lot of conversation around how challenging it is to be
- 2:15a grown up and make friends. And it's so
- 2:20true. And I think there's a lot of fears built up behind
- 2:25ourselves that we're not really noticing that
- 2:29is stopping us from creating friendships. And the
- 2:33fear of strangers is one of them. The fear of saying things that
- 2:38people might judge you as stupid or silly
- 2:42or not like you because of it. This, this,
- 2:47all these fears around being judged constantly, all the
- 2:51time really stop us from making friends
- 2:54because we're so worried about what new
- 2:58people will think of us and even people we know what they will think of
- 3:02us, that we often let those
- 3:06fears stop us from communication. And you can't
- 3:10get closer to people if you're not willing to be a little
- 3:14bit vulnerable. And that's another fear that we have is
- 3:18often when I say fears that we have, I'm speaking from
- 3:23my heart of fears that I have and that I know other People I know
- 3:27have as well, because I've talked about it with them.
- 3:30And there's this fear of being judged
- 3:34all the time. There's also this fear of not having
- 3:38anything important to say or coming off as
- 3:43being too something, whatever it is.
- 3:46Often we grow up with people
- 3:50instilling this sense of humility on us,
- 3:54which is a really great thing to be humble. I'm not dissing
- 3:59that at all. But in our childhood brains,
- 4:02when we were kids and this concept was brought up to us, it was
- 4:06more in the framework of what to do. Like, don't talk
- 4:11too much about yourself. Don't engage
- 4:15in conversations. Let other people speak. Let the grownups speak.
- 4:19Let people with authority speak. Respect these people with
- 4:23authority. And it gives us a sense of when
- 4:27we're grown up subconsciously, we don't communicate
- 4:32in the same way to people that we think of as authority
- 4:36figures as we would someone else.
- 4:39And there's also this.
- 4:42This quality. We've lost sight of what is
- 4:47humble, what that truly is. Because when we were first introduced
- 4:51to the concept, we were children, and it appeared to be
- 4:54these tasks you do, these things you do, don't speak until spoken to.
- 4:58All these kinds of things that come about in our lives right
- 5:03when we're kids, that our parents are trying to teach us how to be kind,
- 5:07good, thoughtful people. Often a
- 5:11lot of those concepts, the depth of the concept is lost
- 5:14on a child because we really don't understand those
- 5:18things yet. But still we take them throughout our lives and
- 5:22we never think to stop and look at them again.
- 5:26And with an adult eye,
- 5:29we just take it as, oh, I'm.
- 5:32I shouldn't ever say anything about myself because that's
- 5:38not being humble, or I shouldn't talk until
- 5:42spoken to, or I'm going to not
- 5:47say much to an authority figure and just take everything they say as truth
- 5:51and not try and say
- 5:55anything or do anything or have an educated debate.
- 5:59Another thing is like, never let yourself be vulnerable.
- 6:02I think a lot of the men, friends that I have really
- 6:06struggle with that, with allowing them to be
- 6:10vulnerable, allowing themselves to be vulnerable. Hi, Kitty.
- 6:14And I think that that stops you
- 6:17from having friends, from being engaging
- 6:21in conversations that deepen a relationship. It's even challenging for
- 6:26your relationships with partners if you
- 6:30can't be vulnerable, because it never allows that depth of
- 6:34relationship building to take place. So your relationship never goes
- 6:39deeper than the certain place. So there's so many
- 6:43fears that we have that are keeping us from
- 6:48expanding our friend group or finding friends or finding other people
- 6:51or Having just general success in life. Another fear
- 6:55is doing anything new in order. Sometimes in order to make
- 6:59friends, we have to step out of our comfort zone and do something new.
- 7:02Like, although we've been lifelong readers, maybe we've never
- 7:06in a position, been in a book club before, and that's a little intimidating to
- 7:09us. And so we don't try it because of the fear of
- 7:14trying something new and failure that might occur. It's not
- 7:17even a truth that failure is going to occur yet we think it's
- 7:21already happening. It's already something because we're so conditioned with
- 7:26these fears to think that it's not going to work out. I'm going to
- 7:30fail. It's not going to happen. I can't do it.
- 7:34I just won't do it. I'll just stay over here and be safe. Sometimes it
- 7:38takes getting out of your comfort zone to meet new people, because your comfort zone
- 7:42is filled with the same people that you see all the time or often.
- 7:47Especially as a lot of us have started working
- 7:51remotely, we don't have.
- 7:54We're a little bit isolated in some ways. And if we don't step
- 7:57out of our comfort zone, we're going to continue to be isolated.
- 8:01That's a huge thing. So that's what I'm really
- 8:05getting at. That we're going to explore with the journal prompt for this
- 8:08week. So the journal prompt for this week is, what are some
- 8:13of the fears that you have that were given
- 8:18to you by somebody else, that were either given to you by
- 8:22society, Your family, caregivers, friends?
- 8:25Maybe a bad thing, a bad, bad or uncomfortable moment
- 8:29happen to you in childhood, and you formulated some fears around
- 8:33that. And you've used that as your guiding light ever
- 8:37since. And you've never looked back. What are some of these fears
- 8:41that are stopping you from getting
- 8:44out there and making new relationships?
- 8:48What are these fears? For me, the fears
- 8:52are a fear of judgment. Fear I'm
- 8:56gonna say the wrong or do the wrong thing. Fear I'm not gonna be good
- 9:00at whatever the new thing is that I try. If, you know, if I take
- 9:03a painting class and I'm trying to meet new people through the painting
- 9:07class, am I gonna just be horrible at it? And I'm
- 9:11not gonna make any friends? Cause people are gonna think that I'm not good.
- 9:17Am I afraid to say hello to new people? Yes. True.
- 9:22So there's a whole bunch of things that kind of keep us from
- 9:26getting out there and finding new
- 9:31people in our lives if that's what we want. And Also in
- 9:35just moving forward in general in our lives. What are some fears you have that
- 9:40are stopping you from your goals in life?
- 9:43Like if you want to write a book, but you're afraid of
- 9:48rejection and you have this fear that nothing you
- 9:52do is good enough, then how are you ever going to write the book
- 9:56if you don't learn how to overcome that fear? Or at least be
- 10:00able to tolerate the uncomfortableness of
- 10:03pushing against that fear? That's another thing
- 10:07is we like to be comfortable and safe, right? There's so much conversation around your
- 10:12comfort zone. What if you just want
- 10:15to do something different, do something new?
- 10:19You have a burning desire that you've had since childhood to record
- 10:24an ep, but you don't. Because of
- 10:29these fears. It's really scary to
- 10:33put your artwork out there. It's really scary to put your work out there.
- 10:36Something you put your soul into, to put it out there for the world
- 10:40to scrutinize. And how do you get over that fear of the what if?
- 10:44So many what ifs in life, right?
- 10:48And we tend to use these what ifs that aren't even true as
- 10:52guiding factors in our lives. Like,
- 10:55what if I ask for a raise and I don't get it? What if I
- 10:59ask for a promotion and I don't get it? What if I apply to this
- 11:02job and I don't get it? What if I say hello to that person and
- 11:07I try to create a friendship with them and they're not interested?
- 11:11What if I ask this person out and they don't want to go
- 11:15out with me? We're constantly, constantly living
- 11:19in these what ifs. And often the what
- 11:24ifs are a negative consequence. It's not like,
- 11:27what if I said hi to that person over there and I
- 11:31realized we had so much in common and we became best
- 11:35buddies? You know what? We're not thinking like that. We're thinking like,
- 11:39what if they think I'm a lunatic or and tell other
- 11:43people. We think these what ifs are so negative, right? They're all these
- 11:48negative things which are supposed to keep us safe, but we
- 11:52let them run wild. And we don't really realize that we're supposed to be
- 11:56analyzing these what ifs. Like, yes, what if it's that
- 12:00thing of like, what if you jump off a cliff and you fall?
- 12:05But also, what if you jump off the cliff and you fly?
- 12:09Those are the things. What are your what ifs?
- 12:13What are they? What fears have been installed in you from
- 12:17somewhere else? And what what ifs are you using
- 12:21to guide your Life. Like, I always have
- 12:25a what if of what if I say something dumb? And so
- 12:29for literally decades in the work world, I didn't say anything during meetings
- 12:33because I was so worried about saying
- 12:37the wrong thing or not understanding the full scope
- 12:41of the issue we were talking about. And then people don't think I'm
- 12:45qualified to be where I am.
- 12:49So I didn't talk in meetings for a really long time because of these negative
- 12:53what's what ifs that if I spoke up, you know, I'd ultimately
- 12:58be fired down the road. Like the what ifs are this trail to the
- 13:01worst case scenario, right? Like your what ifs. What if I talk during a meeting
- 13:05and people think what I say is stupid? What if they think I'm not smart
- 13:08enough for the job? What if they think someone better is for the job?
- 13:11Because did you hear what Juliana said in the meeting?
- 13:15Okay, so I'm going to get fired. You know, we use
- 13:19these what ifs as stepping stones to the worst case scenario.
- 13:22And none of it is true. It's just something we're fabricating
- 13:26in our mind, a worst case scenario. So I challenge you to kind
- 13:30of look at those. When you're faced with something. What are these what ifs that
- 13:34are stopping you from doing it? What are these what ifs that
- 13:39are stopping you from your dreams? What are these what ifs that are stopping you
- 13:42from making friends? What are they? What are these fears
- 13:47that are tied to the what if?
- 13:50And why are you telling yourself these what ifs
- 13:54that are not positive, that don't have positive outcomes? Couldn't you so
- 13:58easily have a what if? That's like, I'm gonna.
- 14:02I'm going to put my manuscript out there.
- 14:05I'm gonna query a bunch of publishers, and what
- 14:09if someone takes it and publishes
- 14:13it and it becomes a book and people like it and read it and enjoy
- 14:17it? What if that. What are the what ifs
- 14:20You. You can change into something positive? And what are
- 14:24these random fears that you have that are running your life that you're
- 14:28not really aware of, that are running your life that
- 14:33are making it hard for you to have friends, to. To go
- 14:36the directions you want to go, to achieve goals you want
- 14:40to achieve, to walk towards your dreams? What are these things?
- 14:44That's what this journaling exercises about this
- 14:48week. What are your what ifs that are stopping you from doing
- 14:52things? And what are your fears that are instilled
- 14:55from you by other things that are either rational or
- 15:00irrational now that you're giving it some sort of thought?
- 15:03Where do they come from and are they serving you now?
- 15:07Or can you have a different thought about it?
- 15:11Can you let go of the fear? Can you let go of this fear and
- 15:14move towards something else? So that's what I'm challenging
- 15:19you with today, this week in this journaling
- 15:23prompt. I hope you find some really interesting things.
- 15:26Please let me know what they are. I would love to know what you find
- 15:30out about yourself because it's an interesting exercise. I do
- 15:34this about for myself about every six months or so or when I'm
- 15:38coming up against something big. Should I do this
- 15:42thing? What are my fears around it? Are they rational?
- 15:46Irrational? Are they fears from my childhood that I
- 15:50can let go of, that I don't need anymore? And what are the what ifs
- 15:53I'm telling myself that's stopping me from moving forward? So there
- 15:57you are. My dear friends, I want to thank you for being here.
- 16:01I want to thank you so much for supporting me and for showing up for
- 16:05your support. And I want to thank you for writing about these writing prompts,
