Transcript
- 0:00When it comes to new year's resolutions, we think of positive changes in our life.
- 0:05A brand new year is a great time of year to set new and improved goals.
- 0:11We want to identify new habits and make a fresh start.
- 0:15But where does one begin?
- 0:18Great question.
- 0:19And that's what we're going to talk about today.
- 0:23You're listening to the stop, the mind screw podcast.
- 0:26I am your host, Kathie Owen.
- 0:28I have been a certified fitness trainer and certified life coach since 2002.
- 0:34On this channel.
- 0:35We talk about entrepreneurship fitness, having a growth mindset, healthy habits, Reality Transurfing and more.
- 0:45Today, we're talking about new year's resolutions.
- 0:49Weather you're listening to this in July.
- 0:52Or January, this is applicable.
- 0:56I'm going to turn to the Robert Dilts logical levels of change to discuss this.
- 1:02This is a useful model and a great way to understand ways we can achieve changes, set big goals and overcome the bad habit of not keeping the new year's resolutions that we set.
- 1:16The six logical levels of change are vision or purpose, identity, the values and beliefs, capabilities, behaviors, and environment.
- 1:31The best new year's resolutions are not resolutions at all.
- 1:35They are about change.
- 1:38They are ways to look at creating healthy habits.
- 1:42Common new year's resolutions are often not kept.
- 1:46Now is a good time to investigate this reason, whether you are in the process of creating new year's resolutions for the first of the year, or if you have fallen off the wagon over the past year.
- 2:01There is no better time than the present to consider this.
- 2:05By the way I have a mind map that goes with this episode.
- 2:09And you can find that at www.kathieowen.com/mindmap All right.
- 2:19Let's get into the Robert Dilts levels of change.
- 2:22We're going to talk about step number one, your purpose or your vision.
- 2:29Ask yourself, this question.
- 2:31Why am I here?
- 2:33A good question to ask is what am I a part of?Your life purpose consists of the central motivating aims of your life.
- 2:43This can be the very reason or reasons you get up in the morning.
- 2:48Purpose or vision equals the motivating aims of your life.
- 2:54A lot of people do not even consider their purpose or vision when setting common, new year's resolutions.
- 3:00It would really be a good idea to consider your larger goal and purpose or vision to create behavior changes and create smart goals.
- 3:12Your purpose and vision can guide life decisions, influence behaviors, shape your goals, offer a sense of direction and create meaning.
- 3:23For some people their purpose is connected to their vocation and that vocation provides meaningful and satisfying work.
- 3:32It helps to have clarity in your purpose.
- 3:35When coming up with a new year's resolutions or a new goal, you will want to lay the groundwork for change and clearly communicate why you are initiating change.
- 3:48In the absence of a clear, focused purpose when setting a specific goal, people will fill that vacuum with their own reasons.
- 3:56And this is where excuses slip in.
- 4:00And then you have a lot of different purposes and that can potentially lead to moving in a different direction and you can end up wasting so much time and energy.
- 4:11Don't do this.
- 4:13We want something that can sustain us for the entire year.
- 4:18Not just the first few weeks of January.
- 4:21We want to set realistic goals using a growth mindset and the Robert Dilts model is a great place to start when it comes to setting good new year's resolutions.
- 4:34A statement of intent.
- 4:37To communicate your vision and purpose, develop a statement of intent and keep it focused on the future.
- 4:44Define your reasons for setting the goals in the first place, spend a little time defining your statement of intent.
- 4:51This one thing will really help you in the long run.
- 4:54Become very clear about this.
- 4:57Remember, it's not about what you do, but why you do it.
- 5:03Once you have clarity of purpose, you can decide the next steps to where you want to go in the future.
- 5:11As a fitness trainer.
- 5:13I see this happen so often, and this is one of the biggest cracks in the new year's resolution process.
- 5:21Is, they talk about what they want to do, but not why they do it.
- 5:27And when you pick really crystal clear on your intent on why you are doing it, It will really help everything else just fall into place.
- 5:39Identity changing your identity is about changing your beliefs, your worldview, your self image, even the judgments you have about yourself and others.
- 5:49And most of the beliefs, assumptions and biases you hold are associated with this level called identity.
- 6:00Outcomes are about what you get.
- 6:02Processes are about what you do.
- 6:06Identity is about what you believe.
- 6:09That is from James clear in Atomic Habits I'm going to repeat that cause it's kind of important.
- 6:17Outcomes are about what you get.
- 6:20Processes are about what you do.
- 6:22And identity is about what you believe.
- 6:25And we are talking about identity right now.
- 6:29When it comes to building habits that lasts when it comes to building a system of 1% improvements, the problem is not that one level is better or worse than the other.
- 6:41All levels of change are useful in their own way.
- 6:45The problem is the direction of change.
- 6:49Many people began the process of changing their habits by focusing on what they want to achieve.
- 6:56This leads us to outcome based habits.
- 7:00The alternative is to build identity based habits.
- 7:05With this approach, we start by focusing on who we wish to become.
- 7:11So I want to introduce you to the hot habit checklist and I encourage you to go download this little free PDF that I have created on building healthy habits that actually stick.
- 7:25You can find that at www.kathieowen.com/habits have a link in the description and the show notes to the habit download as well as the mind map.
- 7:39If that's what you're more interested in.
- 7:41So let's talk about the recipe for sustained success.
- 7:44And this comes from atomic habits.
- 7:47By James clear.
- 7:49Changing your beliefs.
- 7:50Isn't nearly as hard as you might think.
- 7:53There are only two steps or there are actually two steps.
- 7:59Decide the type of person you want to be.
- 8:02That's number one.
- 8:04Number two, prove it to yourself with small wins.
- 8:09Okay.
- 8:09So the first step is to decide who you want to be.
- 8:13What do you want to stand for?
- 8:15What are your principles and values and who do you wish to become?
- 8:20These are big questions and many people.
- 8:23Aren't sure where to begin.
- 8:26But they do know what kind of results they want to get.
- 8:29For example, they want to get six packs abs, or maybe they want to feel less anxious or maybe even just to double their salary.
- 8:38And that's fine.
- 8:39Start there and work backward from the results you want to, the type of person who could get those results.
- 8:47Ask yourself who is the type of person that could get the outcome I want.
- 8:54Kind of, this is where Reality Transurfing comes in too, because Reality Transurfing talks about the slide.
- 9:01Picturing yourself in the future.
- 9:04Exactly what you want to become.
- 9:06So my mentor, Joseph Rodriguez I'll have a link in the show notes and the description to more on Joseph Rodriguez, but he's an awesome mentor.
- 9:14He's got hundreds of episodes on his podcast or his YouTube channel.
- 9:19But he talks about this often.
- 9:22And he talks about how we can picture who the person is that we want to become.
- 9:28And actually it can happen immediately, especially if you've been practicing this for a long time.
- 9:36And this is something I also teach I'm very much in alignment with Joseph Rodriguez and how he teaches these things.
- 9:42He's an awesome mentor.
- 9:44And he also doesn't talk from a place of ego.
- 9:48That's what I love about listening to him.
- 9:50You very rarely if ever hear him talking an ego perspective.
- 9:56But here's a real life example of applying.
- 10:01Real life.
- 10:03Identity for your bigger goals.
- 10:05So perhaps you say you want to lose weight.
- 10:08The identity of that person who wants to lose weight, you want to become the type of person who moves more every single day.
- 10:18So a small win for that.
- 10:20So remember the recipe for.
- 10:23Um, success is going to be, identify the person you want to become.
- 10:28That's a person who moves more every day.
- 10:30And then you want to register small wins.
- 10:34So you can buy a pedometer or start tracking your steps on your smartwatch and walk 50 steps.
- 10:39When you get home from work.
- 10:41Tomorrow walk a hundred steps.
- 10:43The day after that walk 150.
- 10:45If you do this five days per week and add 50 steps each day, then by the end of the day, you'll be walking.
- 10:52By the end of the year.
- 10:54I'm sorry.
- 10:55By the end of the year, you'll be walking over 10,000 steps.
- 10:59Now this is an example that I found in Atomic habits, James clears website.
- 11:05I found some of his blog posts and that's an example that he has on there.
- 11:09But I think that the steps is a law as a fitness trainer.
- 11:13That's a little bit too simplistic, I would say.
- 11:17Just try to be strive to be 1% better today than yesterday and apply the movement as getting 10 minutes of movement in on day one.
- 11:27And then add a minute every single day as you progress.
- 11:31And then get to a place where you're starting to challenge yourself fitness wise, and I teach about fitness and improvement.
- 11:39That's going to improve your health with just going to improve everything else in your life.
- 11:43So I always incorporate fitness in everything, including my courses, including my blog posts, all of that stuff.
- 11:52So the next level on.
- 11:55The Robert Dilts logical levels of change is values and beliefs.
- 12:01Values are like a compass that keeps us headed in the desired direction and are distinct from goals.
- 12:10Great new year's resolutions will always consider your values first and foremost, as part of your resolution plan.
- 12:19Goals or the specific ways you intend to execute your values.
- 12:23A goal is something that we aim for.
- 12:26And check off once we have accomplished it, you know, like our to-do list.
- 12:32Everyone has personal values, whether the person recognizes them or not.
- 12:37Values are the fundamental beliefs dear to us that govern our lives.
- 12:42Gandhi once said happiness is when, what you think.
- 12:47What you say and what you do are all in harmony.
- 12:51And I love that word harmony.
- 12:53In fact, it is one of the simple ways to determine if your values and beliefs are in alignment with your goals.
- 13:02When your thoughts, feelings and actions are in congruence with your personal values, you experience a sense of satisfaction and contentment.
- 13:13Setting a goal to become a professional athlete when you have not even considered the fact that your fixed mindset has kept you stuck in a level of stagnation is not harmonious and is not a good new year's resolution or new year's goal.
- 13:31I like to describe this, like when your thoughts, your feelings and your actions are in congruence with your personal values, you are in flow.
- 13:41So when you're in flow, everything just comes naturally where as opposed to when you're fighting or resisting something, you are not in flow or when you are reactive, but it's also important to recognize when you're not in harmony.
- 13:56And then do not shame yourself for being there because we are human and it's going to happen on the journey.
- 14:04But when you realize that this is not in harmony, this is not where I want to be.
- 14:10You start to realize, okay.
- 14:13That's because my values are not in alignment.
- 14:15My thoughts, feelings and actions are not in alignment.
- 14:19So where can I focus on getting my thoughts or my feelings, or my actions in congruence and just take little bitty steps.
- 14:32And we're going to talk about that in just a moment.
- 14:35But do you know your core values?
- 14:37You want to take a deep look inside yourself to understand your core values.
- 14:42Being in alignment with your personal values makes all the difference in the way you live and work.
- 14:49When your choices and actions are in congruent with your set of values, you may feel internal stress and conflict.
- 14:58This is often a source of frustration and profound unhappiness.
- 15:03As Vadim Zeeland says in Reality Transurfing he says that.
- 15:09Lack of fulfillment and dissatisfaction are the pendulum's favorite.
- 15:14A pendulum I talk about it all the time is simply a thought structure that everybody else thinks.
- 15:20And when you know how to interact with pendulums, you can easily set them to the side and not give your energy to the pendulum, but give your energy to what you value.
- 15:34So common personal core values are especially as an entrepreneur, they are achievement, freedom, community, honesty, respect, love, and integrity.
- 15:49Identifying and understanding your core values is a challenging exercise for many people.
- 15:54Being aware of what you value most is important and worth your time and great for your mental health.
- 16:02When you understand and honor your personal values, it's easier to make crucial decisions.
- 16:08I can't stress that enough.
- 16:10When you understand and honor your personal values, it's easier to make crucial decisions you are guided by what is called a moral compass in decision-making to determine the best direction for you and your life goals.
- 16:27All right.
- 16:27So the next level we're going to talk about in Robert Dilts is logical levels of change is capabilities, skill, and competence.
- 16:37Capability ranges from behaviors you do without conscious efforts to skills, you have learned more consciously.
- 16:45Capabilities refer to plans, strategies, knowledge, and skills needed to achieve a goal.
- 16:52It is considered the how level also known as competence.
- 16:57Competence can be classified into four levels.
- 17:00We have unconscious incompetence.
- 17:03Number two, we have conscious incompetence.
- 17:06Number three conscious competence and number four, unconscious competence.
- 17:11For instance, brushing your teeth might seem to be effortless for you.
- 17:16However, there was a time when you were unconsciously incompetent before you learn to consciously use a toothbrush.
- 17:24Then you developed your skills, so that such, that you don't need, anybody's help to brush your teeth.
- 17:33Competencies can be learned and trained.
- 17:36Do you remember the first time you drove a car?
- 17:38That's a great example.
- 17:40How competent were you?
- 17:42The capabilities you might need to develop will be different from someone else's capabilities.
- 17:48Successful people identify capabilities related to their vision or purpose.
- 17:54Remember back at the level one, successful people identify capabilities related to their purpose or vision.
- 18:02They develop crucial skills continuously learn and grow and improving your skills with constant learning and consistent series of actions.
- 18:12Increase your capabilities.
- 18:14What happens a lot of times is people start getting too much information and they start chasing that shiny object, but when you start to pay attention to your capabilities and focus on that.
- 18:27Which focus is something else, I talk about on this channel.
- 18:30But you develop the skills to focus and then you learn and you grow.
- 18:35And remember it's important to improve your skills with constant learning and a consistent series of actions.
- 18:45I love how, um, you can go back on somebody's YouTube channel and look at their very first video.
- 18:53Somebody that you may be you admire and watch how they progressive only get better.
- 18:58It's just a given.
- 19:01Given, I can't tell you that enough because.
- 19:05You can go back and look at my first video and it's very, you could tell I'm nervous.
- 19:10You can tell I'm shaky.
- 19:12But it's, it's so applicable to your process.
- 19:16It's a process of learning and getting the skills and capabilities.
- 19:22And then as you grow, you get better and better and better.
- 19:25So I've, I've heard it said that you need a hundred episodes under your belt before you really find your.
- 19:33Your forte, your spot, and you have to keep giving that action and taking action.
- 19:40Imperfect.
- 19:43Unconscious.
- 19:44Just imperfect imperfections is what's going to get you through to the next level.
- 19:50You just got to stay consistent with your actions.
- 19:54And another thing I can't stress enough is to stay consistent with your videos.
- 20:01Stay once a week is the best.
- 20:04But if you're trying to get to the next level, it's going to take a while.
- 20:10You just got to stay consistent with your actions and that's a small win that you can definitely celebrate.
- 20:16So if you set the goal for.
- 20:18Improving your business interactions and your community.
- 20:22Then one video a week, one podcast episode a week, one blog post a week, and build on that.
- 20:29And as you build on that, you'll start finding yourself easily, doing more and more and more.
- 20:37So do you know about the 1% rule?
- 20:41I love this rule when you improve a little each day.
- 20:45"Eventually big things occur when you improve conditioning a little each day, eventually you have a big improvement in conditioning.
- 20:54Not tomorrow, not the next day.
- 20:58But eventually a game is made.
- 21:01Don't look for the big, quick improvement, seek small improvement one day at a time.
- 21:07That's the only way it happens and when it happens, it lasts." So that quote right there is from John Wooden.
- 21:17And I don't know exactly where I found that, but I, I love how he states that because this is so true.
- 21:23And especially in fitness, I've seen this happen.
- 21:26You have to improve a little each day.
- 21:28You're not going to see that success overnight, but it does take progress.
- 21:32That's why progress photos do serve their purpose in this.
- 21:37But I first read about the 1% rule and The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson.
- 21:42The 1% rule is simple.
- 21:45Focus on improving your capabilities.
- 21:47Remember that's what we've been talking about here.
- 21:49The capability skills for this, and you focus on improving them 1% each day.
- 21:56Just 1%.
- 21:58No more, and it might seem very little in the very beginning, the improvement will appear to be negligible.
- 22:06You know, Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will you.
- 22:10Great things take time to build when you consistently improve by 1% each day, those improvements start compounding on each other.
- 22:19Slowly, the good habits you develop stack over time and outweigh the bad habits.
- 22:26Several months later, the improvements you make in one day equals what previously took you a few days to accomplish when 1% compounds every day.
- 22:37It doubles every 72 days.
- 22:40If you continually improve yourself by just 1% each day, imagine the personal growth in your life at the end of this year.
- 22:50All right, the next level, we're going to talk about is behaviors.
- 22:53Stephen Covey said," our character is basically a composite of our habits.
- 23:00Because they are consistent.
- 23:02Often unconscious patterns that constantly daily express our character.
- 23:09Adopting a new habit or breaking an old one is notoriously hard.
- 23:14And human beings generally do not like change.
- 23:18I mean, it's just.
- 23:20I can't tell you how often I've seen this, but we stick to our old routines for various reasons, and they may include fear of the unknown or fear of the future.
- 23:31So there were some researchers who were originally interested in why some smokers were able to quit on their own while others needed help.
- 23:42And they found smokers quit only when they are ready to do so and discovered five stages that can be used to assess a person's readiness to make change.
- 23:53Understanding the science of behavioral change has been insightful and enabling people to make lasting change.
- 24:01The stages of change model have been effective, an effective construct and understanding how people go through change successfully.
- 24:11Three important considerations for modifying behavior include number one, readiness to change.
- 24:18Number two, barriers to change and number three, expect.
- 24:24A relapse.
- 24:25You could explain everything about a healthy lifestyle to someone and be sorely disappointed at the end.
- 24:31If you don't know what stage the individual is currently in.
- 24:35When someone is not ready to change your information goes from one ear out the other, and they probably need an espresso, have a growth mindset.
- 24:47I can't tell you as a personal trainer, especially as a corporate wellness director, how often I have encountered this.
- 24:54And I have to remember that those considerations for modifying behavior include they need a readiness to change.
- 25:01Number one.
- 25:02Number two, what are their barriers to change?
- 25:05And there are, these can be so many from having a family from having busy lifestyle from even where they're living their home, their environment.
- 25:16And we're going to talk about environment more any also, and then you're going to expect to relapse.
- 25:22So.
- 25:23A hundred percent of the people I have trained over my many years of business is they, they, all of them relapse somehow some way.
- 25:34And a lot of times that relapse interferes with them coming, even back to me.
- 25:40Or them.
- 25:42Not getting out of that change because as humans, we stick to the comfort zone.
- 25:49So, remember I said, we were going to talk about the stages of change that those researchers talked about with the smokers and at stage number one, we're going to go over those five stages right now.
- 26:02Stage number one.
- 26:03Pre-contemplation.
- 26:05During the pre-contemplation stage, you have no conscious intent of making a change people in this stage, you may not recognize their behavior is unhealthy due to a lack of awareness or information.
- 26:18Most people might be in denial and tend to avoid thinking about the unhealthy behavior.
- 26:24For a person to move past pre-contemplation you need to sense the unhealthy behavior that is holding them back.
- 26:32From attaining important personal goals, and they need to sense that as well.
- 26:38And this stage right here is where most people are and they, they just can't get to the next stage, which is contemplation.
- 26:48At this stage, people become increasingly aware that the behavior is a problem.
- 26:53You consider the potential benefits of making a change and weigh the cost.
- 26:58You may resist change as the costs tend to stand out.
- 27:03Ambivalence may cause you to reweigh the benefits and costs.
- 27:08And this stage can last months or even years.
- 27:12Oh, Lordy, I've seen this so many times.
- 27:14So you may experience conflict and emotions about changing as you view the time and effort involved in change.
- 27:22And most people prefer their comfort zone and they procrastinate.
- 27:28The key to moving to the next stage is a shift from an abstract idea to a belief that modifying your behavior is beneficial to you.
- 27:38You need to ask yourself why you want to change.
- 27:42Go back to vision and purpose.
- 27:45And there you find your answer.
- 27:47Why do you want to change?
- 27:50And congruent people tend to think of intrinsic or internal reasons to change, and it might be helpful to make a list of the pros and cons of behavior change and identify barriers and think about how to overcome them.
- 28:06So stage number three is preparation.
- 28:08During the preparation stage, you are ready to start taking action.
- 28:13I love this stage because then I get them in there.
- 28:17These people that are ready to make this stage or make the change are it's fun to work with them and you can see the wheels turning and how things are going to happen.
- 28:30And it just comes easy when you're working with them.
- 28:33When there are prepared.
- 28:36And this stage typically lasts a few weeks and you might take small steps that will prepare you to make the required change.
- 28:44People may share their plans to change with friends and family who may offer advice and gather information about ways to change your behavior and do your research.
- 28:54It's important to write your goals down and prepare a plan of action.
- 28:59If you want to increase your chances of making a lasting change.
- 29:04So I use notion for this and I build on notion and hopefully I've been using notion since early 2022 I actually found it in 2021.
- 29:14And I started building on it slowly but surely.
- 29:16And I want to start teaching it because it's such a powerful tool.
- 29:21So what I do in notion is I have this one important page that has my dream.
- 29:26It's called my dream big book.
- 29:28And you may have heard me talk about it.
- 29:29And I write my goals down for each of my big things.
- 29:33If it's, if it's health and fitness, if it's my job as a corporate wellness director, if it's my business as an entrepreneur and I write down my big reasons, why, and I refer to this often, I actually create a vision board that I can go in and look at really quick.
- 29:53And it's in my notion on my phone, on my computer and I can easily go look at the things that I'm trying To build upon and it helps.
- 30:02Build that reminder, not right there is the preparation stage.
- 30:06So the next stage we lead into is action.
- 30:09Once you have a plan, you need to take direct action in order to accomplish your goals.
- 30:16If you don't spend enough time in preparation, it is difficult to progress in action due to temptations from people or your environment.
- 30:24So with entrepreneurs, this is where the shiny object syndrome comes in.
- 30:30Because trust me, there are so many shiny objects.
- 30:33To look at, out there in the world and you have to have some discipline and plan that discipline in your preparation.
- 30:41For example, in my entrepreneur page, I have a plan that.
- 30:47Is designed to be flexible, first of all.
- 30:50But second of all, it's also designed to keep me focused.
- 30:54So I don't go chasing that shiny object.
- 30:57Now trust me, I have done this before.
- 30:59We all do this.
- 31:00This is human behavior.
- 31:02I see this in fitness as well, because people don't have a good plan for their fitness.
- 31:08And one of my tools that I use.
- 31:11As I start telling them, okay, let's have a plan.
- 31:13You're going to exercise tomorrow.
- 31:17And let's lay out your clothes.
- 31:19Let's get your S your gym bag.
- 31:21Ready?
- 31:21Let's get your, your supplements ready for the morning.
- 31:24And then therefore that decreases resistance as well as setting the alarm and starting slowly but surely and taking small steps.
- 31:35So that's part of the plan that 1% to get better.
- 31:39And it's important to fight urges that could cause you to slip back into the old habits.
- 31:44When you work towards your goals, reward yourself for positive behavior.
- 31:50Reinforcement and support are extremely important to strengthen your commitment and move forward.
- 31:56Remind yourself regularly of the belief in making the change and the benefits that will come.
- 32:03So when I've got somebody in this stage, I can tell them I text them and I go, Hey.
- 32:09This is great.
- 32:10Look, here we are.
- 32:11We are making the change.
- 32:12Things are going to come slowly, but yeah, you did that.
- 32:15Let's celebrate that win together.
- 32:18And I hold them accountable and I do this in my entrepreneurship.
- 32:22I do this as a corporate wellness director.
- 32:24It just happens all along the way.
- 32:28So at stage number five, which is the final stage, it's the maintenance stage.
- 32:33And in the maintenance stage, you have changed your behavior and you need to turn it into a habit.
- 32:39Be aware of situations where you might be tempted to slip back into old habits and avoid temptations and aim to replace these old habits with positive actions, reward yourself so you can avoid a relapse.
- 32:53Remember relapse was up there where people are trying to change and it's going to come.
- 33:00It's not if, but when, so reward yourself so you can avoid a relapse, especially when you're in the maintenance stage, surround yourself with supportive people whom you trust.
- 33:12So the relapse relapses are commonly.
- 33:16They commonly occur in behavior change.
- 33:18If you lapse back to the old behavior, don't beat yourself up shame and guilt.
- 33:25Those are very low on the.
- 33:27Um, levels of consciousness we don't want to shame ourself should is a dirty word.
- 33:33Take it as a minor setback, analyze what led to the relapse and identify possible triggers and avoid the triggers in the future.
- 33:43And don't give up on yourself.
- 33:46So for example, I've trained this girl that gets all of a sudden starts to feel like crap when she starts exercising.
- 33:52And the reason why is because her body's starting to release those toxins and that's going to happen when you start to move and you've gone from stagnant to moving.
- 34:03Your body is releasing those toxins.
- 34:05It's the same thing with a diet.
- 34:07If you give up carbohydrates, your body's going to go through withdrawal.
- 34:11No doubt about it.
- 34:13If you go through withdrawal caffeine, you're going to have headaches.
- 34:17all of these different things that could cause a relapse.
- 34:20And then you're going to go.
- 34:22I don't want to do this in more.
- 34:23But analyze what led to the relapse and identify possible triggers.
- 34:29So the one that doesn't feel good from her exercise, she could identify her possible trigger as well.
- 34:35Now I feel like crap.
- 34:37So.
- 34:38Take that movement from 20 minutes a day to five minutes a day, and then build that 1% because the, as those toxins start releasing.
- 34:48Then you're going to feel worse.
- 34:50You don't want to push even harder.
- 34:51You want to go back to the five minutes and then six minutes, then seven minutes and slowly build your way up to the 20 minutes.
- 34:59With the diet, same thing.
- 35:01Don't cut yourself.
- 35:03Cold Turkey.
- 35:04You cut back a little bit, a little bit, a little bit, but also remind yourself.
- 35:10Of what causes this to happen and don't beat yourself up and then slowly start doing the 1% rule.
- 35:20So on the logical levels of change, the next one we have is your environment.
- 35:25And the environment encompasses everything outside of yourself is the state of external context where people live.
- 35:34So Joseph Rodriguez talks about the logical levels of change often.
- 35:39And he also talks about environment as contributing to your state, everything in the 3d world, that is the state of the external context of where you live.
- 35:50Your surrounding influences your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions every day.
- 35:57Account for your environment.
- 35:59The choice of clothing, a person wears is heavily influenced by the climate.
- 36:03That's a great example.
- 36:05So like in New York, people can be found wearing winter coats during the winter, but if you live in a tropical country, you don't need it.
- 36:13You don't even need a winter coat.
- 36:15And recognizing the impacts of your environment on your livelihood is vital.
- 36:21That's example is simple.
- 36:22And to the point, but apply that where it goes.
- 36:26In your life.
- 36:29So more on environment.
- 36:31Meet John he's a university student who wants to be healthier.
- 36:34He lives with this friend and roommate, Tom, who is less health-conscious and John has decided to eat nutritious food as one of his new year's resolutions.
- 36:45He wants to stop eating so much junk food and he made a good start by carefully selecting groceries and cooking instead of ordering takeout.
- 36:54As the weeks went by, it became more difficult to stick with his routine.
- 36:59Cooking took significant time and effort while Tom, his roommate ordered takeout almost every day.
- 37:06The saver of pizza, Tom just ordered reminded John of the convenience of ordering online.
- 37:13The temptation to fall back into old habits was very high.
- 37:17We can observe environmental factors that antagonized John's efforts to be healthier.
- 37:25If John wants to adopt a, maintain a healthy habit, he needs to consider the conditions of his environment.
- 37:32In order to set the best conditions to be healthy.
- 37:35John needs to start by talking to Tom.
- 37:38Imagine if John and Tom agreed to cook together and shared the chore.
- 37:43It would take less time if both were chipping in and cooking for two people is more cost effective than cooking for one.
- 37:50John would not be exposed to cues that constantly reminded him a fast food.
- 37:57And Tom would cut his spending on takeout, and eat nutritious meals, the environment in the home.
- 38:04would enabled John to adopt a sustainable habit without resistance.
- 38:10The odds of adopting and maintaining a habit are higher when you set the best conditions in your environment to work in your favor.
- 38:21I'm just sayin'.
- 38:23So in conclusion being conscious of the six logical levels of change will help you when setting new year's resolutions, resolutions, that work.
- 38:34Those logical levels are purpose and vision.
- 38:37Identity.
- 38:39Values and beliefs, capabilities, behaviors, and environment.
- 38:45These logical levels can help you understand at what level you are attempting to make change.
- 38:51Sometimes we might waste time trying to make a change at a lower level when we need to consider a higher hierarchy, a level to achieve that change.
- 39:01If you want to achieve the desired change in life, think about the logical level you are operating in.
- 39:09Alright, thank you for spending part of your day with me.
- 39:11I trust that you found this helpful.
- 39:13If you know someone who can benefit from this.
- 39:16Episode, please feel free to share it with them.
- 39:19And until next time, I'll see you next time.
- 39:23Peace out and Namaste.
