- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yor
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming through.
- 0:23Speaker 1: As this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and
- 0:27Speaker 1: the storytelling of you to make a difference for today
- 0:31Speaker 1: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the cast
- 1:00Speaker 4: of people who want financial freedom. Today's Friday, which means
- 1:03Speaker 4: it's time to get the team together and celebrate you
- 1:05Speaker 4: the incredible She's on the Money community. Today we'll be
- 1:08Speaker 4: sharing our favorite money wins. We'll be helping to answer
- 1:10Speaker 4: a juicy money dilemma which this week is all about
- 1:13Speaker 4: inclusive sizing and the varying prices, and we unpack something
- 1:16Speaker 4: you slid into our dms about which this week is
- 1:19Speaker 4: all about when you're traveling with a friend and you
- 1:21Speaker 4: realize that your budgets may not align.
- 1:24Speaker 5: This one's gonna be juicy. I'm very excited for it.
- 1:26Speaker 6: I know, I can't wait, Beck And today is very
- 1:29Speaker 6: exciting because we are joined by a very well loved
- 1:33Speaker 6: friend of the show. You guys have probably heard from
- 1:35Speaker 6: her before if you came to our book tour last
- 1:39Speaker 6: last year.
- 1:39Speaker 5: I was gonna say, it's been longer than that.
- 1:40Speaker 6: Twenty twenty two, I think is when we realized we
- 1:43Speaker 6: have the beautiful April joining us. You might know us
- 1:46Speaker 6: as the Bodzilla April.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Hi. Hello, how are you voting?
- 1:50Speaker 6: Hi? I'm so excited to have you here because anyone
- 1:53Speaker 6: who has listened to that episode, because we did record
- 1:56Speaker 6: the podcast that you joined us for, knows that you
- 1:58Speaker 6: are just such a ray of sunshine.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Oh thank you. I think that was one of the
- 2:02Speaker 2: most fun nights. We really just had the best time.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It was loose, lots of lots of pass on and
- 2:07Speaker 2: off stage. I feel hundi of percent now. April. Some
- 2:10Speaker 2: of you may know her. She's a body acceptance and
- 2:12Speaker 2: fat positive lady. In addition, she is a writer, she's
- 2:15Speaker 2: a podcaster, she's a public speaker.
- 2:17Speaker 5: She works in corporate.
- 2:18Speaker 6: Comm she doesn't she do all Literally, I can't think
- 2:21Speaker 6: of a single thing, and she's one of the funniest
- 2:23Speaker 6: humans I've ever met.
- 2:24Speaker 5: As well. Do you want to tell everyone a little
- 2:26Speaker 5: bit about yourself?
- 2:26Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 2:27Speaker 2: Sure, absolutely, Well, I mean, aside from all of those things,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I guess I would also say I'm a mum, and
- 2:32Speaker 2: so that takes up, you know, a fair bit of time,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and that's the stuff you kind of don't see. That's
- 2:36Speaker 2: really you know, I suppose when you look at what
- 2:38Speaker 2: people post online versus what is actually happening in their life,
- 2:41Speaker 2: sometimes you don't have to share everything. And so for me, yeah,
- 2:44Speaker 2: being a mom is a big part of that. But
- 2:46Speaker 2: I get to travel a lot and spend a lot
- 2:47Speaker 2: of time doing cool things like this, and that's I
- 2:49Speaker 2: think that's really fun because it lets my child see
- 2:51Speaker 2: that parents also have a life outside of parenting, which
- 2:54Speaker 2: is a really important thing for them to see. But yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 2: so I definitely think I would. I'll take all those
- 2:59Speaker 2: titles write up first, and why not. Absolutely, I'm here,
- 3:01Speaker 2: I've got headphones on. I don't think you can really
- 3:03Speaker 2: argue with that.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Now, is she in her money era?
- 3:06Speaker 1: This?
- 3:06Speaker 2: I am in my money era?
- 3:07Speaker 6: Very exciting. Before we get into it, how's everybody's week
- 3:10Speaker 6: this week?
- 3:11Speaker 5: April? You go first?
- 3:11Speaker 2: Please oh me, how was my week? Well, it's been great.
- 3:14Speaker 2: So I spent the weekend in Brisbane with a bunch
- 3:16Speaker 2: of my gal pals. We were at a cute little
- 3:19Speaker 2: pier event for a brand that we love, Yes, the
- 3:22Speaker 2: Gordeous Inclusive clothing brand, and then.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Branded it Vagary. The label amazing by.
- 3:28Speaker 2: The beautiful Rachel just honestly, it's floey, it's beautiful. I'm obsessed.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And also it's fun because Rachel told U story about
- 3:35Speaker 2: how she has people telling her that they thought the
- 3:37Speaker 2: name was Vagerie.
- 3:39Speaker 5: I mean, not what you want to hear as a
- 3:41Speaker 5: business from.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I had someone slide into my DMS and say because
- 3:45Speaker 2: I tagged the label and say, oh, I thought it
- 3:48Speaker 2: might have been like, you know, a product for you
- 3:50Speaker 2: who ha. I said, well, the clothes a light and
- 3:52Speaker 2: flowy and made from cotton type fabrics, so like it
- 3:55Speaker 2: is kind.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Of vat Yeah, absolutely, which was not where.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I expected any of those versations to go. So yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 2: and then you know, back to work midweek and now
- 4:03Speaker 2: I'm here on my day off because we love a
- 4:05Speaker 2: part time work agreements, and here I am hanging out
- 4:07Speaker 2: with you both.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Oh I'm so excited, very very fun. Don't start Victoria
- 4:15Speaker 6: the word.
- 4:17Speaker 2: She's not here, so someone's going to say, did she
- 4:20Speaker 2: tell you to do this? Actually? No, which is just
- 4:23Speaker 2: yet more proof that we're all so perfectly matched for
- 4:25Speaker 2: each other.
- 4:26Speaker 5: Definitely definitely. How's your weet been back?
- 4:28Speaker 4: My week has been absolutely lovely, just basking in the
- 4:33Speaker 4: sometimes sun. Still going to the gym is something that
- 4:37Speaker 4: I never thought i'd stick to. But I also do
- 4:39Speaker 4: want to speak too soon, because any second now I
- 4:41Speaker 4: feel like I'm going to have one one minute break
- 4:44Speaker 4: that will last an entire lifetime.
- 4:46Speaker 5: So I am worried about that. But otherwise honestly just chilling.
- 4:49Speaker 5: What about you?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:51Speaker 5: Same, I think, just working.
- 4:53Speaker 6: I've been enjoying all of the baby photos beginning from VD,
- 4:56Speaker 6: just kind of plodding along. It's getting chilly now, which is,
- 5:00Speaker 6: you know, not my fave. Starting to think about planning
- 5:02Speaker 6: of AK hopefully Okay, we'll see somewhere warm, I think,
- 5:06Speaker 6: because I'm not I'm not good with the cold, but TBC,
- 5:08Speaker 6: you haven't figured it out. Just sure we'll go nooser, See,
- 5:11Speaker 6: my week's been good, but I've got some really good
- 5:13Speaker 6: money wins to share with you guys.
- 5:15Speaker 5: You can like to hear them. No, thanks, I don't know.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I think yeah, maybe it anyway, it was a rhetorical question.
- 5:25Speaker 6: My first money win this week comes from Lauren, who
- 5:28Speaker 6: said money win. I finally made it to five K
- 5:30Speaker 6: in my emergency fund, which I've been struggling to get
- 5:33Speaker 6: to for two years. Now, money loss. We just found
- 5:36Speaker 6: out we need to contribute an extra five k to
- 5:38Speaker 6: my body corporate for an urgent repaint of the property
- 5:40Speaker 6: due to flaking paint letting moisture in. But at least
- 5:43Speaker 6: I have the emergency fund for it now.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Well, congratulations and sorry to hear. Real kick up the
- 5:48Speaker 5: pants when that happens.
- 5:48Speaker 4: It's like exactly, yeah, exactly, that's exactly what it's there for.
- 5:54Speaker 5: But also very sad when you have to use it.
- 5:56Speaker 5: But now you know you can do it, so you
- 5:57Speaker 5: can just do it again.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely.
- 6:00Speaker 6: Now I've got a money in from Maddie, who said
- 6:02Speaker 6: money win. I've been using the seven eleven app to
- 6:04Speaker 6: score fifteen dollars off of fuel through the fuel lock function.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Such a shame they're restricting the discount as of this week.
- 6:11Speaker 6: I don't know what that's about.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So you can. I think it's you can look at
- 6:14Speaker 2: the app and see what the fuel price is and
- 6:17Speaker 2: lock it in, which obviously you risk the biscuits because
- 6:19Speaker 2: of what if it goes down? True, But like any
- 6:21Speaker 2: kind of thing, you're locking in interest rates, et cetera.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I think sometimes you just got to go, I'm going
- 6:25Speaker 2: to jump in, take it. Then you can lock it
- 6:27Speaker 2: in and then I don't really understand the actual process,
- 6:29Speaker 2: but I did read about that because I remember there's
- 6:31Speaker 2: lots of compos about fuel kind of over the last
- 6:33Speaker 2: few years.
- 6:33Speaker 5: So expensive.
- 6:34Speaker 6: If I paid like two dollars something this week, I
- 6:36Speaker 6: really cried. And I remember when I used to think
- 6:38Speaker 6: that it was like a dollar thirty. I'd be like, now,
- 6:39Speaker 6: wait for it to go down. Well, totally, I can't
- 6:41Speaker 6: remember last monight, was it all of thirty?
- 6:43Speaker 2: I was young enough to remember when fuel was under
- 6:46Speaker 2: a dollar and they used to report it on the
- 6:48Speaker 2: radio every morning, and that it had gone to ninety
- 6:50Speaker 2: five cents and everyone was in a funeral.
- 6:53Speaker 4: So, oh, my goodness, Yeah, it's not so much worse.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Older than both of you buys quite some term.
- 7:00Speaker 5: You wouldn't know you wouldn't know it all.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Next, I've got a money win from Lucy who said
- 7:03Speaker 6: I got two hundred dollars worth of alsk D for
- 7:06Speaker 6: eighteen dollars. I found a discount code for fifteen percent off,
- 7:09Speaker 6: and then another eight point five percent return using shop back,
- 7:12Speaker 6: and I had approximately one hundred and thirty dollars in
- 7:15Speaker 6: cash back to withdraw, which I put towards the purchase.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Whoa, whoa, whoa, I love this.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I'm a shot back girly, same, yes, same, and yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 2: this is I really, I said. I was in my
- 7:25Speaker 2: money era the other day. I looked at the direct
- 7:27Speaker 2: Hotel booking website and how much it was, and then
- 7:29Speaker 2: booking on booking to a come through shop back, and
- 7:32Speaker 2: went like, do I actually save money if I think
- 7:33Speaker 2: it's I'm going to get this much back? Like I
- 7:35Speaker 2: did a whole math. So there's lots of equations on
- 7:38Speaker 2: my around. Imagine it.
- 7:39Speaker 6: Do you believe it one of those movies where they're
- 7:41Speaker 6: looking at the board and there's like.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Yeah, was it Russell Crowe, Jeffrey roj I don't know
- 7:48Speaker 2: it was someone.
- 7:50Speaker 5: I'm sure they've all stayed at all.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I was actually thinking exact Galafanakis with the you know the.
- 7:55Speaker 5: That's what I was pure, Yes, that's me, big bids.
- 8:00Speaker 6: I've got a Bundy reading here from Steph, who said
- 8:02Speaker 6: her birthday is Friday, so she's been receiving all of
- 8:06Speaker 6: the birthday emails and discounts and free coffees and free
- 8:08Speaker 6: food from businesses, which we love.
- 8:10Speaker 5: And a big happy birthday to you, Steph, big happy
- 8:13Speaker 5: birthday to you.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Then I've got one from Mia who said I standed, primed,
- 8:18Speaker 6: and painted four pieces of dated furniture. The paint and
- 8:21Speaker 6: equipment cost me about forty bucks, but the savings to
- 8:24Speaker 6: get a new desk and coffee table and side table
- 8:26Speaker 6: would have been well over five hundred.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Dollars and nothing going to landfill.
- 8:31Speaker 5: We laugh. We do love that. Good for you, sis.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And now that she knows she can do it when
- 8:35Speaker 2: she's over that.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Change it exactly. I love a DIY moment.
- 8:41Speaker 6: And then lastly this week, I've got a win from Kaylee,
- 8:44Speaker 6: who said money win. I had one hundred and fifteen
- 8:46Speaker 6: dollars in unpaid holls. This one's for you back, but
- 8:48Speaker 6: I called them up and explained that I was on
- 8:50Speaker 6: a holiday and didn't realize that they were all separate bills.
- 8:53Speaker 6: I thought it was just additional letters that were being
- 8:55Speaker 6: sent while I was gone, and they wiped all the
- 8:58Speaker 6: admin fees. So now I only have to pay for
- 9:00Speaker 6: thirty eight bucks.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Oh that's so good.
- 9:02Speaker 2: A little bit of a moment for calling instead of emailing,
- 9:05Speaker 2: or just honestly, because I have so many friends who
- 9:09Speaker 2: are like, oh, I'll just do you know what, I'll
- 9:10Speaker 2: just pay it, I was like, oh no. And also
- 9:12Speaker 2: because I've worked on the other side of being customer service,
- 9:14Speaker 2: not in that particular scenario, but actually I quite like
- 9:17Speaker 2: helping people. So if I have the ability to do it,
- 9:19Speaker 2: why wouldn't I just be like, oh no, don't to worry. Yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 2: I want to make your day. And when you're nice
- 9:23Speaker 2: to customer service people, they'll be nice to you. So true.
- 9:26Speaker 4: That is so true for everyone listening. If you're mean
- 9:29Speaker 4: to customer service people, they probably are going out of
- 9:31Speaker 4: their way to not help you.
- 9:32Speaker 6: So potentially, absolutely, as someone who worked in customer serfs,
- 9:36Speaker 6: I can neither confirmin or tonight, me too.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Actually, did you have money win at all this week?
- 9:43Speaker 5: April Ka?
- 9:44Speaker 2: Ch Yes, as I said, I've said a couple of
- 9:46Speaker 2: times now, I'm in my money era. This week I
- 9:49Speaker 2: opened a savings account, very exciting little online savings account moment.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I have decided that I'm trying to say for a goal,
- 9:56Speaker 2: and so I went online and I had actually had
- 9:58Speaker 2: a look at a few accounts. Of course she's on
- 10:00Speaker 2: the money girl means, and I was like, I won't
- 10:02Speaker 2: just open the first one I see love. It looked
- 10:04Speaker 2: at what the actual account offered in terms of, you know,
- 10:07Speaker 2: the interra straight but also the terms, so whether I
- 10:10Speaker 2: could put money in take it out, because obviously I'm
- 10:12Speaker 2: a flexible gal. I want to be able to do
- 10:13Speaker 2: what I need to do. And found the one that
- 10:15Speaker 2: suited me best and opened it and put money in
- 10:17Speaker 2: it straight away. For you, MAB, I set up a
- 10:21Speaker 2: direct debit so that it goes in everywhere with my payroll.
- 10:25Speaker 5: I was on a roll day. Automation just makes me
- 10:28Speaker 5: feel tingly.
- 10:31Speaker 4: That's a word that I will associate with you forever.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Tingly but also automated but tingling now forever will be.
- 10:42Speaker 5: I don't know why I thought that was okay. Moving along,
- 10:46Speaker 5: you get some ro tips.
- 10:47Speaker 4: I do have some ro tips, so one from the community,
- 10:50Speaker 4: one for myself and I thought I would reserve the
- 10:52Speaker 4: third place for yourself, April, if you have amazing okay, perfect.
- 10:58Speaker 4: So the first one comes from KR, who says that
- 11:00Speaker 4: adding a can of lentils and craded veggies to casserole
- 11:03Speaker 4: meals spag bowl, shepherd's pie, past makes, et cetera. It
- 11:06Speaker 4: kind of like doubles the feed. So it's like, you know,
- 11:09Speaker 4: spend like a dollar on a can of lentils chucking
- 11:11Speaker 4: in that kind of doubles all quadruples in some cases,
- 11:15Speaker 4: I mean, a bit crazy, but it can really extend
- 11:19Speaker 4: the longevity of your food, and I think it's a
- 11:21Speaker 4: great idea, especially if you're like kind of clutching at
- 11:24Speaker 4: pennies and you can't afford feed like maybe a whole
- 11:26Speaker 4: family or just yourself for the week.
- 11:28Speaker 2: You know, I totally love this one. I'm I more
- 11:29Speaker 2: of a like half mince, half red kidney beans curly
- 11:32Speaker 2: when I do Mexican. Yes, it's also like I feel
- 11:34Speaker 2: like it's good protein getting some veggies in there. No
- 11:36Speaker 2: one notices because it's all the same color. Happy days,
- 11:40Speaker 2: And totally it's like the cost of the meat versus
- 11:42Speaker 2: you know that, and if you want it to go
- 11:43Speaker 2: the whole way, you could just do it all beans,
- 11:46Speaker 2: do you delicious? So yeah? And for vegetarian people, it's
- 11:48Speaker 2: like when you have someone over, you don't have to
- 11:50Speaker 2: be like, oh, you've got a separate plate eating a
- 11:53Speaker 2: few less meat, few more veggie. That's always good.
- 11:55Speaker 5: We love. Yeah, that's a win win win win.
- 11:57Speaker 6: I would say I have the idea of grating to
- 12:00Speaker 6: get one of those odd bunch bags. If you know,
- 12:02Speaker 6: you get like the one dollar whatever it coals where
- 12:04Speaker 6: it's the misshapen carrots or that you couldn't necessarily easily
- 12:08Speaker 6: chop up, but if you just grate it and chuck
- 12:09Speaker 6: it in.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Yeah, totally.
- 12:11Speaker 4: And then the poor sad little fruits that everyone thinks
- 12:15Speaker 4: are ugly.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I really feel for them.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Fruits fruit positivity there.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, we need an advocate for those guys.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Well that's me. I'm there with my I've got zucchini's
- 12:26Speaker 2: carrots and then also sometimes avocados. I'm like, how can
- 12:29Speaker 2: you you can't judge? Then you kind of open and
- 12:31Speaker 2: it's mostly see and you're like, okay, well I'll away
- 12:34Speaker 2: with it this time. Okay.
- 12:36Speaker 6: Yeah, ten of them for my bowl of cocaolally for
- 12:39Speaker 6: one table.
- 12:42Speaker 5: And my broke tip of this week.
- 12:43Speaker 4: I caught up with an old friend literally yesterday, and
- 12:47Speaker 4: it was a bit awkward because I was making a joke.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I was like, who in the world still uses group
- 12:51Speaker 4: on and she was like I do. I said, oh,
- 12:55Speaker 4: I'm so sorry, but she really didn't lighten me. I
- 12:59Speaker 4: was humbled stay because she said that she you can
- 13:01Speaker 4: get anything on there and so much she but I
- 13:03Speaker 4: forgot that this thing existed really, but she was like,
- 13:06Speaker 4: you know, she gets ten dollars event movie tickets instead
- 13:09Speaker 4: of going and paying like sometimes twenty eight dollars, like
- 13:11Speaker 4: someplace they have paid that much. And so my break
- 13:14Speaker 4: tip for this week is, do have a browse on Groupon.
- 13:17Speaker 4: I'm going to eat my words. I'm going to say,
- 13:19Speaker 4: go on groupon have a look what's there. You might
- 13:23Speaker 4: be surprised. You might find some cheap restaurant vouchers, some
- 13:26Speaker 4: cheap movie tickets. Just have a browse, have a peruse.
- 13:28Speaker 5: I used to always love when I was younger the
- 13:30Speaker 5: massages on.
- 13:31Speaker 6: There because they would usually do really cheap massages. I
- 13:35Speaker 6: haven't looked at it in about ten thousand years, so.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I know because I don't live so you know, obviously
- 13:40Speaker 2: I live in Canberra, and so that means that for me,
- 13:43Speaker 2: group on options are slightly limited because we definitely don't
- 13:45Speaker 2: have the kind of metropolitan vibes that when I lived
- 13:48Speaker 2: in Sydney, I found group on was more useful because
- 13:50Speaker 2: I have all way more options. True, So group On,
- 13:52Speaker 2: if you're listening, expand the options in camera.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Thanks, let us know, we'll work with you, will make
- 13:57Speaker 5: it happen.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, Okay, that's it for me, April. I feel
- 14:01Speaker 4: like maybe you have a good one, and I'm very
- 14:02Speaker 4: excited to hear it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I do have a good one. So I collect the
- 14:06Speaker 2: cans at home. My son is nearly seven and he
- 14:09Speaker 2: told me by a couple of weeks ago, Mum, I
- 14:12Speaker 2: really want to go to Italy, which I was like,
- 14:14Speaker 2: how do you even know it exists? It's called geography,
- 14:19Speaker 2: And so he said, I really want to go to
- 14:21Speaker 2: Italy and throw a coin in the pond. And I
- 14:24Speaker 2: was for a second, also not knowing much about Italy
- 14:27Speaker 2: going in the world. Oh, and I said, do you
- 14:28Speaker 2: mean the trivia fountain? He said, yep, the Trevia fountain.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Because children never quite say the thing that they're trying
- 14:33Speaker 2: to say, and I said, okay, well and I kind
- 14:36Speaker 2: of looked and I went, what about if we save
- 14:38Speaker 2: all of these cans and then we take them to
- 14:40Speaker 2: the return and earn, which I knew that he would
- 14:41Speaker 2: just find that that, you know, whole process really automation.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Baby, love it.
- 14:45Speaker 2: We're back at that absolutely, and we'll save all your
- 14:48Speaker 2: cans and then you get to keep the money. So
- 14:50Speaker 2: it's your job to collect the cans from around the
- 14:52Speaker 2: house where I'm alway leaving them after I finish drinking them.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Collect the cans and we'll take them. So we did that,
- 14:57Speaker 2: and we returned his first lot of cans and he
- 14:59Speaker 2: got six dollars fee. So I've told him that it's
- 15:01Speaker 2: going to take him approximately fifty years to return enough
- 15:05Speaker 2: cans to get a trip to Italy. What he doesn't
- 15:07Speaker 2: know is that I'm basing that on a figure that
- 15:09Speaker 2: includes airfares and accommodation for me and his dad as well,
- 15:13Speaker 2: probably only twelve and a half years if he wants
- 15:17Speaker 2: to go on his own. But given that he'll only
- 15:19Speaker 2: be about nineteen, surely he wants to take his mum
- 15:21Speaker 2: with him when he's nineteen to Europe. Mum, come on,
- 15:24Speaker 2: let's go. And so hopefully yes, that will set him
- 15:28Speaker 2: on the right path to understand about saving. I put
- 15:30Speaker 2: it into his account, showed him that I'd put it
- 15:32Speaker 2: in there. I was super easy. Well, it went to
- 15:34Speaker 2: my PayPal and I was like sure, I'm like, look,
- 15:35Speaker 2: I'm putting that money in for you. And so that's
- 15:38Speaker 2: his little fortnightly thing that he gets to do.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Very cute. I love that.
- 15:41Speaker 4: That is very sweet and what a great way to
- 15:44Speaker 4: teach financial literacy at a young age.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Thank you, I must say.
- 15:47Speaker 6: The Italian to me is rolling at a Triviy fountain
- 15:50Speaker 6: being called the pond.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You're like, ah, it's not.
- 15:57Speaker 5: That is iconic.
- 15:58Speaker 4: I actually didn't know it was called that I until
- 16:00Speaker 4: right now, so I'm seeing you laughing. But I'm also like,
- 16:02Speaker 4: I totally get where he's coming from. Okay, let's go
- 16:05Speaker 4: for a really quick break and on the other side,
- 16:06Speaker 4: we will discuss money dilemma. The money dilemma.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Welcome back, everybody.
- 16:16Speaker 6: We're doing our special episode with our guest April Helene
- 16:19Speaker 6: horton the vod Villa.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 16:25Speaker 7: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just

- 16:40Speaker 7: us a short voice recording and you might just find
- 16:42Speaker 7: yourself on the show. Now, let's take a listen to
- 16:44Speaker 7: this week's money dilemma.
- 16:47Speaker 8: Hey girls, for context, I'm a clusterized girlie a very
- 16:50Speaker 8: proud one at that. Recently, I went on a trip
- 16:53Speaker 8: to Balley and noticed that the larger the size, the
- 16:55Speaker 8: more expensive the item was. I tried not to overreact,
- 16:58Speaker 8: but when I asked the lady why this was the case,
- 17:01Speaker 8: she said it's because they use more fabric. I know
- 17:03Speaker 8: this isn't the case in Australia. In fact, I'm definitely
- 17:06Speaker 8: happy with how inclusive sizing is, but the fact I
- 17:09Speaker 8: had to pay more money purely for my size was
- 17:11Speaker 8: a concept I find myself fixated on. I went through
- 17:14Speaker 8: the same cost of living crisis last year as my friends,
- 17:17Speaker 8: but every time I complained about it, I feel like
- 17:19Speaker 8: my friends are dismissing it and telling me to move on.
- 17:22Speaker 8: I guess my dilemma is how can I communicate the
- 17:24Speaker 8: fact that this is unfair financially, but also diminishes my
- 17:27Speaker 8: confidence a bit. To my girlfriends.
- 17:29Speaker 6: Thanks, that would be awful if you were in a
- 17:31Speaker 6: situation and somebody just said I just feel like, it
- 17:34Speaker 6: wouldn't feel nice. But I do feel like, and I'm
- 17:38Speaker 6: you know, I am straight sized, so I can't really
- 17:40Speaker 6: speak from experience, but I do feel like a lot
- 17:43Speaker 6: of the time plus sized clothing is priced at a
- 17:46Speaker 6: higher price point. I don't necessarily know it's tip for
- 17:49Speaker 6: tat in the same way that oh, I look at
- 17:51Speaker 6: this stress and in a size eighteen, it's X dollars
- 17:54Speaker 6: in the same way that this girl experienced in Bali.
- 17:56Speaker 6: But I feel like, just as a general rule of thumb,
- 17:59Speaker 6: often when I do brands, they are priceier. But I
- 18:02Speaker 6: don't know if that's just my perception of it.
- 18:05Speaker 4: I mean I kind of feel that as well, because
- 18:08Speaker 4: I don't know about you guys, but like I used
- 18:11Speaker 4: to shop at, is it city cheek?
- 18:13Speaker 5: Is that what it's called? I never knew if it
- 18:14Speaker 5: was chick or chic.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I believe it's chic, but then in brackets, except it's not.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, that's so embarrassing. I've been telling everyone.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Doesn't they knew who you met?
- 18:25Speaker 4: Okay, cool, I hope, so sorry everyone out there. But
- 18:28Speaker 4: I think because it kind of felt a little bit
- 18:30Speaker 4: more botique. And I don't really don't really know how
- 18:32Speaker 4: to use that word, so I might be saying it incorrectly,
- 18:33Speaker 4: but it always felt more expensive. But I feel like
- 18:36Speaker 4: it was kind of like, hey, this is our niche,
- 18:37Speaker 4: and this is like we're charging more because we're allowed.
- 18:40Speaker 5: To because this is our niche.
- 18:41Speaker 4: And so I'd be like, okay, well I don't really
- 18:43Speaker 4: have an option, so the options. It's the options thing,
- 18:45Speaker 4: isn't it. It's like, well, if you don't have an option,
- 18:47Speaker 4: then you kind of have to.
- 18:48Speaker 5: But I don't know.
- 18:50Speaker 4: That's kind of like my experience and know that our
- 18:52Speaker 4: listener is asking basically like how do we I guess,
- 18:56Speaker 4: like portray that or kind of explain that to people
- 18:57Speaker 4: who haven't had that same experience. But it's it's kind
- 19:00Speaker 4: of like with everything, like if someone hasn't had that
- 19:02Speaker 4: same experience as you, it can be hard for people
- 19:04Speaker 4: to empathize. And so all I would say is just literally,
- 19:08Speaker 4: in this instance, it is a little bit better in
- 19:11Speaker 4: you know, say, you actually have some numbers. You can
- 19:13Speaker 4: actually crunch numbers and be like, here is actual evidence,
- 19:16Speaker 4: Here is actual proof that is things are more expensive
- 19:19Speaker 4: for me. Sometimes I'm not sure if that's always a situation.
- 19:21Speaker 4: She did say, it's a little bit EASi here in Australia,
- 19:23Speaker 4: but if you've got the receipts, show them, babe.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I like that. It's like mildly aggressive, but in a
- 19:30Speaker 2: cute one. So my experience of this is I have
- 19:34Speaker 2: never had that experience. Now, what I would probably say is,
- 19:37Speaker 2: in a situation where you're in valley buying clothes, is
- 19:39Speaker 2: it possible you're having tailored items, and that you're potentially
- 19:42Speaker 2: having a conversation with a person who's literally thinking about
- 19:45Speaker 2: meters and material because you know, if you go to
- 19:47Speaker 2: spotlight and you need this many, it's this much, and
- 19:50Speaker 2: if you need this many, it's as much. Now I
- 19:52Speaker 2: fully understand the emotional thing because I remember there was
- 19:55Speaker 2: a brand and I won't name them, but a brand
- 19:58Speaker 2: that used to charge a surpless feet So it was
- 20:01Speaker 2: like the extra small small medium life as soon as
- 20:04Speaker 2: there's have to be an ex involved in there, one
- 20:06Speaker 2: two or three x's plus twenty dollars. So yeah, there
- 20:10Speaker 2: were some ballsy nonsense. They don't do it anymore, which
- 20:12Speaker 2: is why I'm not going to name them.
- 20:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll tell you I'm dying today.
- 20:17Speaker 2: But so they used to charge a different they were
- 20:20Speaker 2: at a different price point, but like actively so when
- 20:22Speaker 2: you would drop down the menu, it would change the price.
- 20:24Speaker 6: Were they like if you went to excess double excess?
- 20:27Speaker 6: Were they dropping math?
- 20:28Speaker 2: So they had a base price and then it went
- 20:29Speaker 2: up from someone so that the math is not mapping.
- 20:32Speaker 2: So that experience I do relate to that experience. However,
- 20:36Speaker 2: that's not something I obviously didn't buy the thing, so
- 20:38Speaker 2: it's like it's not an experience that I've had. I
- 20:40Speaker 2: think in defense of the situation in Bali, and to
- 20:44Speaker 2: reassure this listener that it's not a you problem. That
- 20:47Speaker 2: is probably you experiencing a person who owns a tiny
- 20:50Speaker 2: little business covering their costs based on what their costs
- 20:54Speaker 2: actually are and perhaps not thinking about the broader problem
- 20:58Speaker 2: of this makes this person feel so and that's not great.
- 21:02Speaker 2: But I think in the Australian landscape, we've got two
- 21:05Speaker 2: things happening. You're totally right back that we've got limited
- 21:07Speaker 2: options city chic. If it is if that is your.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Real name is at this point in the room with us.
- 21:17Speaker 2: You know, if you're in danger, and so I think
- 21:20Speaker 2: they are. They wanted to pass themselves off as boutique,
- 21:22Speaker 2: and I think ten years ago when I was buying
- 21:24Speaker 2: clothes from them for myself, I got a new corporate
- 21:27Speaker 2: job and wanted to buy new clothes. I still have
- 21:30Speaker 2: some of those items. The quality was much higher. Peplum
- 21:33Speaker 2: tops they are forever. They're laughing, but I'm not joking.
- 21:37Speaker 2: It's one of the items. I was like, I love
- 21:39Speaker 2: this top and I don't care if other people it's
- 21:41Speaker 2: not in fashion, yeah, but I like it and when
- 21:43Speaker 2: I wear it, You're like, oh that's good. I know.
- 21:45Speaker 2: And so I definitely think over time their quality has lowered,
- 21:49Speaker 2: but their prices have not. And yes, we have more
- 21:52Speaker 2: options now, you know, places like Big W and your
- 21:54Speaker 2: other larger departments type stores are stocking a plus range now.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Because I'm never looking at the size eight range. I
- 22:02Speaker 2: don't know if I could go, like for like a
- 22:04Speaker 2: white singlet top and a white singlet top from the whatever,
- 22:07Speaker 2: the straight sized range, who I don't know them. I
- 22:11Speaker 2: don't know if I can compare like for like you're
- 22:13Speaker 2: something like, you know, a white singlet top or a
- 22:14Speaker 2: basic from the straight sized range, and then go to
- 22:17Speaker 2: the other section of the store where the plus size
- 22:18Speaker 2: stuff is because obviously they don't keep them together, wouldn't
- 22:20Speaker 2: want us mixing, and go, oh, this is this much
- 22:24Speaker 2: and there's a difference. But the reality is that, yes,
- 22:26Speaker 2: it's not just about the price point, although that's key
- 22:29Speaker 2: and part of that feeling around when we're talking economically,
- 22:32Speaker 2: this person's experiencing a more significant impact in a cost
- 22:36Speaker 2: of living crisis, but also the fact that you're only
- 22:38Speaker 2: limited because this person has the option for a white
- 22:41Speaker 2: one of black on, a brown on, a gray one,
- 22:42Speaker 2: a blue on, pink on, and yellow and you get
- 22:44Speaker 2: white or black. Yeah, that's so true. And I'm kind
- 22:48Speaker 2: of like, well, what if I want to be cute
- 22:50Speaker 2: and colorful? Yeah, never mind, I guess. And so I
- 22:53Speaker 2: think there are some brands that are doing it better,
- 22:55Speaker 2: some brands that are not doing it well at all.
- 22:56Speaker 2: One of the other key things, And I know I
- 22:58Speaker 2: mentioned this brand earlier, Vagary is a really great brand
- 23:01Speaker 2: who they really are super inclusive. But also I know
- 23:04Speaker 2: that I've got a friend Katie full disclosure, she is
- 23:06Speaker 2: my friend who earns Ecklestone the label, and she released
- 23:09Speaker 2: her clothing range last year and she's been really great,
- 23:13Speaker 2: like in conversations with girlies talking about costs and all
- 23:17Speaker 2: of that type of stuff. She's someone who I've learned
- 23:19Speaker 2: a lot from about how it kind of works and
- 23:22Speaker 2: about having a certain number of sizes to run before
- 23:24Speaker 2: you can start. So we have lots of businesses who
- 23:26Speaker 2: talk about the costs of keeping plus size clothing on
- 23:29Speaker 2: their racks, and I think that the reality is that
- 23:31Speaker 2: if you want to do it, you can. If they
- 23:33Speaker 2: wanted to, they would, yeah, And I think for this person,
- 23:35Speaker 2: our listener who's having that experience, my recommendation really would
- 23:40Speaker 2: be to look for those brands that want you there
- 23:42Speaker 2: and try to focus on finding clothes that you love
- 23:45Speaker 2: and that you're going to have in your wardrobe for
- 23:46Speaker 2: a long time, because you will pay more for really
- 23:49Speaker 2: great clothes and are made by brands that love all
- 23:51Speaker 2: bodies and especially fat bodies, but the likelihood that they
- 23:55Speaker 2: will last longer and be pieces that you will look
- 23:58Speaker 2: back on in your wardrobe over and over again. I
- 24:00Speaker 2: know that it's really hard. It's not getting easier to
- 24:02Speaker 2: be a fat person buying fashion because yes, we have
- 24:05Speaker 2: more options, but we still have to face you know,
- 24:08Speaker 2: we've reached the kind of end of the life cycle
- 24:10Speaker 2: of the fashion body positivity season. I feel like it's
- 24:15Speaker 2: going out.
- 24:15Speaker 6: Everyone's saying we spoke about it. We mentioned this at
- 24:17Speaker 6: some point. I remember when it was on the show.
- 24:19Speaker 6: The Kate Moss vibe is back.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Here the heroin aesthetic and as a person who didn't
- 24:25Speaker 2: want to wear low rise Janes the first time. It's
- 24:26Speaker 2: a hard note for me, I am, and so I
- 24:29Speaker 2: think for our listener, big hugs, it is hard. The
- 24:33Speaker 2: size on the tag doesn't matter. You are entitled to
- 24:36Speaker 2: want to have fashion, and I think our focus really
- 24:38Speaker 2: needs to change away from I suppose trying to fit
- 24:42Speaker 2: clothes and finding clothes that fit us. If your friends
- 24:44Speaker 2: can't get on board with that, get new friends.
- 24:46Speaker 5: That's what I was going to say.
- 24:48Speaker 6: Is the thing I think that I did mention is
- 24:50Speaker 6: like the friend situation, and I feel like your friend
- 24:53Speaker 6: should be empathetic to your situation.
- 24:56Speaker 2: I think not being able to relate to something isn't
- 24:58Speaker 2: a good reason not to care about it.
- 25:00Speaker 6: And it's like, as you were saying back, like you
- 25:03Speaker 6: have the receipts you can literally say here's the difference,
- 25:06Speaker 6: here's the issue.
- 25:07Speaker 5: You can see it visually.
- 25:09Speaker 6: I guess as you were saying in the landscape in Australia,
- 25:11Speaker 6: it's not just overseas. And if your friend is making
- 25:14Speaker 6: you feel bad about that, I would say that they
- 25:16Speaker 6: don't sound like a very good friend.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Ye, to be honest, agreed.
- 25:19Speaker 2: One of my other things that I've been doing is
- 25:21Speaker 2: so I made I went on a no new fashion promise,
- 25:24Speaker 2: so one January. I don't really do resolutions, but when
- 25:27Speaker 2: I moved house and I saw how many clothes I've got,
- 25:29Speaker 2: and I don't know if either of you have seen
- 25:31Speaker 2: on my Insta when I posted those stories, it's literally
- 25:34Speaker 2: it's literally a wardrobe that was built for two adults
- 25:37Speaker 2: because it's in like I've got the main bedroom and
- 25:40Speaker 2: it is a full walking room and it goes all
- 25:42Speaker 2: the way Oh no, that's a winnow, all the way down,
- 25:44Speaker 2: all the way down. I've got stuff stored at the
- 25:46Speaker 2: top in the drawers and here I have more clothes
- 25:48Speaker 2: than any human person will ever need. Yeah, And so
- 25:51Speaker 2: I just was like, this is actually ridiculous. And also
- 25:53Speaker 2: what I got rid of that, I was like, oh,
- 25:55Speaker 2: I don't know. If I love that, I've got more
- 25:57Speaker 2: than ten bags of stuff that I'm going to I'm
- 25:59Speaker 2: actually gonna say on consignment, which is exactly we love well,
- 26:02Speaker 2: because I was just, you know, I thought, am I
- 26:04Speaker 2: actually ever going to sell these in my own closet sale?
- 26:06Speaker 2: No I'm not. But realistically speaking, if this person who
- 26:09Speaker 2: has a business doing that, the lovely Maria from the
- 26:12Speaker 2: fat Section in the Southern Highlands in New South Wales,
- 26:14Speaker 2: I was like, babe, you take them, you sell them,
- 26:16Speaker 2: give me a little chuck a few dollars my way,
- 26:18Speaker 2: because at this point it's literally zero dollars. It's worth
- 26:20Speaker 2: zero to me in a bag in my wardrobe, in
- 26:22Speaker 2: my garage. Yeah, and so I'm going to sell those,
- 26:25Speaker 2: but I've also promised myself I'm not buying any new fashion.
- 26:28Speaker 2: So the only thing I'm purchasing from clothing and apparel
- 26:31Speaker 2: stores is replacement basics like underwear, single it tops, that
- 26:34Speaker 2: kind of stuff, and not buying anything new for the
- 26:37Speaker 2: entire year.
- 26:38Speaker 5: I love that I saw.
- 26:39Speaker 6: I don't remember the exact details of where I saw it,
- 26:43Speaker 6: and so this is probably not that helpful, but I
- 26:44Speaker 6: remember seeing someone posting about the amount of water and
- 26:49Speaker 6: electricity and stuff that it takes for somebody to add
- 26:52Speaker 6: a new piece to their closet. Yes, and they're like,
- 26:54Speaker 6: then multiply that by the fact that you're getting a
- 26:56Speaker 6: new outfit for you know, every event or you dress,
- 26:59Speaker 6: go out or whatever it is. And then the amount
- 27:02Speaker 6: of just resources that we're all taking by consuming and
- 27:05Speaker 6: a lot of the time we're consuming fast fashion, which
- 27:07Speaker 6: I am not judging because I know that, you know,
- 27:10Speaker 6: price point is important to people, and not everyone can
- 27:12Speaker 6: afford to invest in expensive things at the moment. But
- 27:15Speaker 6: the fact that like our default is I'll just go
- 27:17Speaker 6: buy a ten dollar top, and the drain that that
- 27:21Speaker 6: has on like our resources and the impact on our planet,
- 27:23Speaker 6: Like we've had the hottest January on record in the
- 27:26Speaker 6: history of the world. And like I know that you
- 27:29Speaker 6: just go, oh hot weather, like great.
- 27:30Speaker 2: I love the things. No, I don't. I lay awake
- 27:32Speaker 2: at not thinking about it.
- 27:34Speaker 5: But yeah, you do.
- 27:35Speaker 2: You do you forget that that is actually a direct impact,
- 27:38Speaker 2: Like when you think, oh my god, I'm so hot,
- 27:40Speaker 2: I can't I'm sweating to death, that you actually look.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Does the consumer on an individual basis have the ability
- 27:46Speaker 2: to completely change this? No, but do we all have
- 27:49Speaker 2: the ability to slightly change our behavior to make a
- 27:51Speaker 2: small impact. Yeah, and also agree that we need to
- 27:54Speaker 2: you know, I don't think we want to be shaming
- 27:56Speaker 2: people about what they're able to afford, but also really
- 27:59Speaker 2: changing people's perception of views around fast fashion because the
- 28:03Speaker 2: amount of resources it consinues to create the fashion, the
- 28:05Speaker 2: amount of landfill, the lack of ethics in the supply chain.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I do think we need to be asking ourselves not
- 28:11Speaker 2: so much whether they should reconsider spending more money. That's
- 28:14Speaker 2: the whole point. We're trying to save money or not
- 28:17Speaker 2: be spending money needlessly. Do I actually need to buy this?
- 28:20Speaker 2: And so that's where I landed as someone who has
- 28:22Speaker 2: pieces in my wardrobe from City Cheek, as I said,
- 28:25Speaker 2: which they are technically fast fashioned in terms of how
- 28:27Speaker 2: it's produced in that kind of thing. And yes, keeping
- 28:30Speaker 2: it for a long time does increase the sustainability in
- 28:32Speaker 2: the sense that it's not in landfill and I haven't
- 28:34Speaker 2: bought new things to replace it. But at the same time,
- 28:37Speaker 2: I just looked at my wardrobe and I thought, this
- 28:39Speaker 2: is all amazing stuff I can shot my wardrobe, and
- 28:43Speaker 2: I mean, I know it's only what four months into
- 28:46Speaker 2: the year. But the amount of times I've thought I
- 28:49Speaker 2: might it, oh on a weight means that I was
- 28:52Speaker 2: consuming at a rate that was totally unnecessary. Yeah, And
- 28:54Speaker 2: I think for me that's something that I've been really
- 28:57Speaker 2: happy to be able to curb. And I know that
- 28:59Speaker 2: that's not for everyone, and some people have really great
- 29:00Speaker 2: habits around that stuff. But I think when we're talking
- 29:03Speaker 2: about consuming fashion and our ability to buy clothes that
- 29:06Speaker 2: are really beautiful and that fit us, that's why I
- 29:08Speaker 2: care a lot about supporting brands that care about sustainability,
- 29:12Speaker 2: brands that care about ethics, and brands that care about
- 29:13Speaker 2: fat people, because all of those demographics and all of
- 29:16Speaker 2: those considerations have been left out of fashion for such
- 29:18Speaker 2: a long time. So I think we do have the
- 29:20Speaker 2: ability to have a significant impact when it comes to
- 29:23Speaker 2: the climate, which is a feminist issue because the people
- 29:26Speaker 2: who are most heavily impacted by the climate crisis are women.
- 29:29Speaker 2: It is our opportunity to push back brands that we
- 29:33Speaker 2: know won't name them, but you know who they are,
- 29:34Speaker 2: who are literally killing the planet. If we push back
- 29:37Speaker 2: against purchasing from them and we see that they're reducing
- 29:40Speaker 2: in terms of their production size because they're losing money.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Then we can have a genuine impact. Our plastic straws
- 29:46Speaker 2: being eliminated from every cafe on the street going to
- 29:48Speaker 2: change the world. Probably not, potentially causes more problems for
- 29:51Speaker 2: people with disabilities and things like that. So it's like,
- 29:54Speaker 2: let's not rush to the individualist solution. Let's try to
- 29:57Speaker 2: figure out how we actually can change something genuinely, tangibly
- 30:01Speaker 2: change it with a mindset change.
- 30:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:03Speaker 5: Do you guys follow Emma Edwards the broke generation?
- 30:06Speaker 2: I think I do.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Yeah, she's in a finance space. She's great.
- 30:09Speaker 6: But she did a wardrobe pause challenge last year similar
- 30:12Speaker 6: to you. She bought nothing new. She gave herself a
- 30:14Speaker 6: few I think you know, I can replace things if
- 30:17Speaker 6: they break, you know, hygiene things, underwear, stuff like that
- 30:20Speaker 6: obviously all on the awkward list, but like as a whole,
- 30:23Speaker 6: no new fashion purchases, and she tracked it throughout the art.
- 30:26Speaker 6: She succeeded, and it was really interesting because she now
- 30:30Speaker 6: I believe she does like a challenge where she helps
- 30:32Speaker 6: other people do the same thing. But she spoke about
- 30:35Speaker 6: the psychological impact of breaking that habit, kind of like
- 30:38Speaker 6: what you were saying, and she was saying, it's so interesting,
- 30:41Speaker 6: like now she thought when she started that she'd get
- 30:43Speaker 6: to the last day of twenty twenty three and you know,
- 30:46Speaker 6: Jan Verst be like, get me to the shops, but
- 30:49Speaker 6: she didn't have that desire because she had broken the
- 30:52Speaker 6: psychological need to consume in that way. Yeah, which is
- 30:56Speaker 6: really interesting because you're, as you're saying, like it's almost
- 30:58Speaker 6: a wiring and it's changed the way that you think
- 31:00Speaker 6: about things. I know that she had an event to
- 31:03Speaker 6: go to I remember seeing and she sowd an outfit
- 31:06Speaker 6: because she went and she got some fabric and she
- 31:09Speaker 6: made it. And I don't think she's a particularly experienced
- 31:12Speaker 6: sower from what she said, But it was just really
- 31:14Speaker 6: interesting to be like, there are other options to you
- 31:16Speaker 6: than going out and just buying like a quick, easy solution.
- 31:19Speaker 6: You know, Can you shop at secondhand? Can you do
- 31:21Speaker 6: all of these things? So changing the mindset, I think
- 31:24Speaker 6: is such a big cornerstone. And if you do still,
- 31:26Speaker 6: you know, at the end of this year, for you, April,
- 31:29Speaker 6: if you go, oh, I do like I want to
- 31:30Speaker 6: buy something new or I want to do that, I
- 31:33Speaker 6: feel like the psychology of it will have changed and
- 31:35Speaker 6: you can do it more mindfully, which is awesome.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And I think also separately a bit related
- 31:41Speaker 2: my ability to save money by not buying things. Well,
- 31:44Speaker 2: put it this way, my after pays at zero.
- 31:47Speaker 6: Queen amazing, delete it well unless you cash flow, which
- 31:50Speaker 6: is fine I do.
- 31:51Speaker 2: But also that's my goal is to actually get to
- 31:54Speaker 2: the point where I've built up my savings so I
- 31:55Speaker 2: feel comfortable to delete it. Feels like a bit of
- 31:57Speaker 2: a safety net right now because like I don't totally fair. Yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 2: so my outter pays at zero and I'm able to go, oh,
- 32:03Speaker 2: I'm going to save so much money. That's really great.
- 32:05Speaker 2: So that mindset shift around what I value. I think
- 32:08Speaker 2: also because I get a little dope mean hit from
- 32:10Speaker 2: looking at my savings account balance instead of from that
- 32:12Speaker 2: order received notification. But at the same time buying something new,
- 32:16Speaker 2: I think I'm not ruling it out. I'm just I
- 32:18Speaker 2: think taking the year off because I genuinely have so
- 32:22Speaker 2: many flip and clothes like I don't I don't actually
- 32:24Speaker 2: need to buy anything. But also trying really hard not
- 32:26Speaker 2: to push that onto other people. When some's like I
- 32:28Speaker 2: want to buy something new, I heard myself say, you
- 32:30Speaker 2: don't need anything to this person and then I was like,
- 32:32Speaker 2: you are like one of those people who like that
- 32:35Speaker 2: quit smoking in, coughs at people, or you know, gives
- 32:38Speaker 2: up gluten and then starts telling everyone that gluten's going
- 32:41Speaker 2: to kill you, which like in some people's case it might,
- 32:42Speaker 2: but like just relax, okay, So yeah, trying to not
- 32:45Speaker 2: make it my whole personality. Yeah, but also being really
- 32:48Speaker 2: like just really sticking to that value. And I think
- 32:51Speaker 2: for me, I hope to say out the whole year
- 32:53Speaker 2: and have stuck to it because I think also I
- 32:54Speaker 2: never stick to anything. So I'm just being really proud
- 32:56Speaker 2: of myself being like I did that.
- 32:58Speaker 5: Are you a document on social I think a little bit.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I wanted to really get I think, get into it
- 33:02Speaker 2: and be able to show a tangible difference, like so
- 33:04Speaker 2: to be able to go, oh, I've actually I can
- 33:06Speaker 2: tell you how much I saved based on I like data.
- 33:09Speaker 3: I know.
- 33:09Speaker 2: I was telling you a story right before we started
- 33:11Speaker 2: recording about how I used to take I used to
- 33:13Speaker 2: buy lunch at work all the time in coffees. Buying
- 33:14Speaker 2: coffees is my favorite activity, and so I worked out
- 33:20Speaker 2: that I was spending I spent thirteen hundred and nineteen
- 33:23Speaker 2: dollars last year on coffees and lunches and I don't
- 33:25Speaker 2: even work full time in the office, Like, what is
- 33:28Speaker 2: actually happening?
- 33:28Speaker 5: Does that make you feel crazy?
- 33:29Speaker 2: I was just like, oh my god, that would be
- 33:31Speaker 2: in my savings account if I hadn't done that. And
- 33:33Speaker 2: then I had a conversation with a friend and it
- 33:35Speaker 2: was payday. So you're always feeling a little loosey, and
- 33:39Speaker 2: I'd gone so far like that whole time, not buying
- 33:41Speaker 2: a coffee, and she said to me, She's like, well,
- 33:43Speaker 2: I'll buy you one because I made a joke. I
- 33:45Speaker 2: was like, I didn't say I wasn't drinking coffee. I
- 33:46Speaker 2: said I wasn't paying for it. Very savvy. But she said, well,
- 33:51Speaker 2: I'll share your coffee because I've convinced you to come
- 33:52Speaker 2: and stand in the coffee line with me. I'll buy
- 33:54Speaker 2: your coffee, which I think is nice. It's the way
- 33:55Speaker 2: I iced to do a nice thing. And she said,
- 33:59Speaker 2: have you found it? I said, I do miss the
- 34:02Speaker 2: ritual of coming to do it, but I've actually found
- 34:04Speaker 2: It's been good. I've been drinking more water because I'm
- 34:06Speaker 2: not drinking coffee. And then we had a conversation about
- 34:09Speaker 2: this sort of all or nothing attitude towards stuff, and
- 34:11Speaker 2: she said, well, what about if you bought a coffee
- 34:13Speaker 2: like only once a fortnight, which I think she was
- 34:15Speaker 2: just angling towards the fact that we worked together in
- 34:16Speaker 2: the office on the day that's usually pay day, which
- 34:18Speaker 2: is once a fortnight. I was like, I say, were
- 34:20Speaker 2: you go one strategic queen? And I said, well, I
- 34:23Speaker 2: did the mats on my phone. I'd worked out it
- 34:24Speaker 2: was twenty seven dollars a week that I had wasted
- 34:27Speaker 2: spent on lunches that I could have brought and coffees
- 34:30Speaker 2: that I could have not drank because really, like it's decaf,
- 34:33Speaker 2: I'm not even getting caffeinated from it. What's the point
- 34:37Speaker 2: it's hot milk? And I worked out it'd be one
- 34:39Speaker 2: hundred and eighty two dollars for the whole year. Oh
- 34:42Speaker 2: okay if I just bought one a fortnight. And I thought, okay,
- 34:45Speaker 2: so it's not a commitment that I go, Oh, I
- 34:47Speaker 2: can never. I've sworn off this forever, and if I
- 34:49Speaker 2: do it, I have to go out that I can
- 34:50Speaker 2: give myself an upper cut. It's now I can go.
- 34:53Speaker 2: What's my limit? I'm changing the way I'm doing this thing.
- 34:56Speaker 2: So again, by that same token, if you've decided that
- 34:58Speaker 2: you just kind of stopped buying fast fashion and you're
- 35:01Speaker 2: only going to invest in sustainable fashion, that's a mindset
- 35:04Speaker 2: shift that will over time save you money, and you
- 35:06Speaker 2: forgot about it.
- 35:07Speaker 5: So it's like, hey, we love that. That actually was
- 35:10Speaker 5: on my in's list op shopping, So thank you.
- 35:12Speaker 2: So much late.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Also, I think I pretty much talked ninety five percent
- 35:15Speaker 2: of this whole episode.
- 35:16Speaker 5: Pols love it. No, it is very, very very thank
- 35:19Speaker 5: you so much.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Well, it was about money, so at least it was on.
- 35:22Speaker 6: Topic absolutely, and I think the conversation around fashion and
- 35:25Speaker 6: finance and the impact like it's very relevant to us,
- 35:28Speaker 6: Like it's something that I genuinely like find so interesting.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Hopefully the people listening to you, Okay, guys, are we
- 35:32Speaker 4: ready for a juicy DM?
- 35:34Speaker 5: Absolutely? Okay, here we go.
- 35:36Speaker 4: So from one listener they say, I'm going on a
- 35:38Speaker 4: VAK with my girlfriend in brackets euro summer. We love that,
- 35:43Speaker 4: which is our winter? Isn't it so great? Get out
- 35:46Speaker 4: of here? Escape? And as we get further into the planning,
- 35:48Speaker 4: I can see we are financially going on too very
- 35:51Speaker 4: different holidays. We were so keen on the idea of Europe.
- 35:54Speaker 4: We kind of skipped talking about our budgets. I see,
- 35:57Speaker 4: I have saved for a long time to go on
- 35:58Speaker 4: this trip, but it seems like she wants hostels whereas
- 36:01Speaker 4: I want hotels are a bit nicer. She wants to
- 36:03Speaker 4: go on to train for fifteen hours because it is cheap,
- 36:06Speaker 4: but I'll happily spend more money to do a two
- 36:08Speaker 4: hour flight to make it more convenient. I'm keen to
- 36:10Speaker 4: book fancy dinners, but she wants to spend no more
- 36:13Speaker 4: than forty dollars on dinner. That's still kind of expensive though. Yeah,
- 36:16Speaker 4: I've luki got the ig from traveling with her now.
- 36:18Speaker 4: There isn't anything wrong with the way she wants to
- 36:20Speaker 4: do it, It's just not where I'm at. How do
- 36:22Speaker 4: I say to her that I want to enjoy myself
- 36:24Speaker 4: and financially we won't be the best travel buddies. She's
- 36:27Speaker 4: so keen on going together, but would rather go solo
- 36:30Speaker 4: and not have to compromise my trip.
- 36:32Speaker 6: I want to say our listener has a very healthy perspective.
- 36:35Speaker 6: I appreciate that she's not expecting her friend to come
- 36:38Speaker 6: up to not being like, she's a tired ass, why can't.
- 36:40Speaker 5: We spend sixty billion dollars on dinner late?
- 36:43Speaker 6: Because I think we've spoken about this before in the
- 36:45Speaker 6: sense that it's okay if you want to travel differently
- 36:47Speaker 6: to your friends, like if you want to do it
- 36:48Speaker 6: super budget and you just want the experience and you
- 36:50Speaker 6: just want to see the place, that is so fine.
- 36:53Speaker 6: If you think this is a once in a lifetime
- 36:55Speaker 6: trip and I really want to spend money and I
- 36:57Speaker 6: want to live it up and I that's a value
- 36:59Speaker 6: to me, is also fine. But I think it's not
- 37:02Speaker 6: fine to expect people to change to suit you in
- 37:06Speaker 6: that sense, Like you can't expect your friend who doesn't
- 37:08Speaker 6: have a lot of money to spend a lot And
- 37:10Speaker 6: if your friend with who doesn't want to spend a
- 37:12Speaker 6: lot of money doesn't necessarily need to expect you to
- 37:14Speaker 6: spend not a lot either. Yeah, so I think like
- 37:17Speaker 6: her perspective is very healthy. I think literally just say
- 37:21Speaker 6: to her what you said to us, Like, I think
- 37:23Speaker 6: it's as simple as that, just saying, hey, I think
- 37:26Speaker 6: that it looks like we want to spend different amounts,
- 37:28Speaker 6: which is totally fine. I really want them to feel
- 37:30Speaker 6: like You're not shaming them for, you know, not wanting
- 37:32Speaker 6: or having the money to spend, because that's not a
- 37:34Speaker 6: good feeling for anybody, but just saying that I really
- 37:38Speaker 6: want to live it up. I want to spend a
- 37:39Speaker 6: lot of money. It feels like maybe you want to
- 37:41Speaker 6: do it more budget friendly. I think maybe we just
- 37:45Speaker 6: kind of split off and do the trips the way
- 37:46Speaker 6: we want to do the trips, and that's totally fine,
- 37:49Speaker 6: and hopefully that's the end of the conversation.
- 37:51Speaker 2: I think also, and I obviously not knowing how old
- 37:54Speaker 2: this person is, I don't have a good sense of
- 37:56Speaker 2: where they are in terms of is this a long friendship?
- 37:58Speaker 2: Is is someone you've known your whole life, or someone
- 38:00Speaker 2: that you don't feel comfortable having this conversation with because
- 38:02Speaker 2: you don't know them as well as you know your
- 38:04Speaker 2: oldest friend. It is a really important part of adolt
- 38:06Speaker 2: friendships learning to have hard conversations about things. And I
- 38:09Speaker 2: say that as someone who has struggled but managed to
- 38:12Speaker 2: have some really really difficult conversations with friends about you know,
- 38:16Speaker 2: balancing time together when we're in the same city because
- 38:19Speaker 2: we don't really live in the same city, and about
- 38:21Speaker 2: doing what I want to do rather than making time
- 38:23Speaker 2: to do what she'd like to be doing, or that
- 38:26Speaker 2: she would like to spend time with me, And I go,
- 38:27Speaker 2: she just really want to have the night by myself. Yeah,
- 38:30Speaker 2: which you know, pass me would have really struggled. So
- 38:32Speaker 2: I definitely relate to this. I agree that you should
- 38:35Speaker 2: just have an upfront conversation about the fact that I've
- 38:38Speaker 2: saved a really long time. One thing I was thinking
- 38:40Speaker 2: as I was listening to this was, is the person
- 38:43Speaker 2: who wants to spend less hoping that they're going to
- 38:45Speaker 2: spend less still by sharing accommodation sharing, travel sharing through
- 38:49Speaker 2: And if that's the case, like, are you impacting that
- 38:51Speaker 2: person's ability to go on the trip at all if
- 38:54Speaker 2: you don't share, Because if that's the case, that's still
- 38:57Speaker 2: a conversation you need to have because maybe it's not
- 38:59Speaker 2: your Owsummer to twenty four for them. Yes, because at
- 39:02Speaker 2: the end of the day, it is your trip you've
- 39:05Speaker 2: saved for, and it's exciting to share something with someone
- 39:07Speaker 2: like that. I'd love the idea of going on a
- 39:09Speaker 2: trip like that and being able to look back and go,
- 39:11Speaker 2: oh my god, look remember when we went to the
- 39:13Speaker 2: you know, the trivia fountain. But if you're not traveling
- 39:17Speaker 2: as a couple and so you have different ones and
- 39:19Speaker 2: you have an agreed that you're going to share accommodation,
- 39:22Speaker 2: because for me, that's that's actually a hard no. I
- 39:25Speaker 2: really don't like the idea of traveling solo with just
- 39:28Speaker 2: one other person and sharing a room because you never
- 39:30Speaker 2: have any space. I travel with girlfriends quite regularly, but
- 39:33Speaker 2: there's a group of us, there's seven of us, and
- 39:35Speaker 2: we'll often look for ways to save money by going, oh,
- 39:37Speaker 2: if we share a room or a bed, depending we
- 39:40Speaker 2: can save money, and we look at you know, what's
- 39:42Speaker 2: going to work better. But on our most recent trip,
- 39:45Speaker 2: I was like, sorry, it's hot, we're in brizzy. I
- 39:48Speaker 2: actually don't want to share, so sorry, Well, I just
- 39:52Speaker 2: know I won't have a good sleep, I won't have
- 39:53Speaker 2: a good time trip ruin, what's the point? And it
- 39:56Speaker 2: wasn't a hard conversation because we're all really good friends,
- 39:58Speaker 2: but also because we had been frank and been talking
- 40:00Speaker 2: about the budget upfront, so it wasn't a big deal.
- 40:03Speaker 2: But I think for this person having that conversation, first,
- 40:07Speaker 2: assessing what's going to be the outcome of this conversation
- 40:09Speaker 2: is this person going to be upset because I might
- 40:10Speaker 2: have totally ruined their whole plan to go to Europe.
- 40:13Speaker 2: If that's the case, and you want to be able
- 40:15Speaker 2: to compromise a little bit, maybe you offer to do
- 40:17Speaker 2: certain legs of the trip together and then you split
- 40:20Speaker 2: off and then you come back. So, for example, that
- 40:22Speaker 2: fifteen hours she's gonna be on the train, you'd be
- 40:23Speaker 2: there early. Do you think what you want to do
- 40:25Speaker 2: and then say and then I will meet you. And
- 40:27Speaker 2: so that person might spend one night on their own,
- 40:30Speaker 2: in their own accommodation. But then it's like, but then
- 40:31Speaker 2: we can go. We could go to a hotel, and
- 40:34Speaker 2: so you get what you want, but you compromise will
- 40:36Speaker 2: saying I'll share with you, we'll get a twin room,
- 40:38Speaker 2: and that person has to just bump up a tiny
- 40:40Speaker 2: bit and then you come down a little bit. It
- 40:42Speaker 2: is about compromise, but also it's kind of not If
- 40:44Speaker 2: you don't want to go with them, maybe just make
- 40:47Speaker 2: that choice and think about if the outcome of this
- 40:49Speaker 2: conversation is that I lose this friendship over this trip,
- 40:53Speaker 2: that's not great. But is that a symptom or is
- 40:56Speaker 2: that an indication of a bigger problem that you don't
- 40:59Speaker 2: feel like you can communicate you needs with your friend,
- 41:00Speaker 2: because then actually that's an issue that's totally separate to
- 41:03Speaker 2: your Europe trip. Either way, I hope that it's a
- 41:06Speaker 2: really fun trip. I totally relate to being the person
- 41:08Speaker 2: that wants to have the more bouge experience, although I
- 41:11Speaker 2: am the person with the budget. So anyway, that's a
- 41:14Speaker 2: problem for next year when I try to go to
- 41:16Speaker 2: Europe on my can money, and so I think definitely,
- 41:19Speaker 2: I don't think that this person should compromise on the
- 41:21Speaker 2: trip of their dreams. But if they can see their
- 41:24Speaker 2: way to going, I can find some middle ground in
- 41:26Speaker 2: some parts of it that won't ruin it for me
- 41:28Speaker 2: but will help this person have a great time. Then
- 41:31Speaker 2: go with that, go with what works. But at the
- 41:33Speaker 2: end of the day, this is your dream. Do what
- 41:35Speaker 2: you want to do.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Yes, yes, I was going to say a very very
- 41:38Speaker 4: similar thing, but I do. I often get confused by
- 41:41Speaker 4: this in like the regular world, where people say girlfriend.
- 41:44Speaker 4: I don't know someone with a literal girlfriend. I'm like,
- 41:47Speaker 4: are you actually talking about your girlfriend or you' talk
- 41:49Speaker 4: about your friend? Because if they're talking about their girlfriend,
- 41:50Speaker 4: I'm like this whole thing is like changing my lie,
- 41:53Speaker 4: you know. So it could be their girlfriend, in which
- 41:55Speaker 4: case I'd be like, you can if you've kind of
- 41:59Speaker 4: planned this thing together, it's kind of like being to
- 42:00Speaker 4: be a romantic thing. But let's say for the sake
- 42:03Speaker 4: of this DM and this conversation, they're just regular friends.
- 42:07Speaker 4: My mind is exactly where your mind is at, April,
- 42:10Speaker 4: and I'm thinking, yeah, like a nice little hybrid or
- 42:13Speaker 4: just having this exact conversation with them. I'm a big
- 42:17Speaker 4: fan of like thinking or like kind of not reading
- 42:20Speaker 4: into but like seeing certain things that could be symptomatic
- 42:24Speaker 4: exactly as you said, April, of something bigger. So if
- 42:26Speaker 4: it is does seem like it's a conversation that's hard
- 42:28Speaker 4: to have or it might literally ruin a friendship, that
- 42:32Speaker 4: might be something that you'd have to consider as well.
- 42:35Speaker 4: I know it's separate to the travel thing, but if
- 42:37Speaker 4: you're planning a trip with someone and you or your
- 42:40Speaker 4: friend are not willing to compromise in any way, like
- 42:42Speaker 4: you can see that you're both on different journeys and
- 42:45Speaker 4: that's totally fine, no one's in the wrong here, then yeah,
- 42:47Speaker 4: they might be if you are worried that it'll be uncomfortable, awkward,
- 42:50Speaker 4: or someone will be mad or I can definitely see
- 42:53Speaker 4: I guess it, like depends you didn't really mention like
- 42:55Speaker 4: how long they've been planning it for hay, so.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Yeah, but not having the conversation up front could ruin
- 42:58Speaker 2: the trip. So then you've wasted you And.
- 43:00Speaker 6: There's nothing worse than being on a trip with someone
- 43:02Speaker 6: and just hating your life as well, Like there's nothing worse,
- 43:05Speaker 6: especially somewhere as expensive as Europe, that would be awful.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I think what I would actively discourage is lying
- 43:10Speaker 2: to this.
- 43:10Speaker 5: Person about it totally, totally.
- 43:12Speaker 2: So don't don't suddenly say I've decided I'm not going
- 43:14Speaker 2: to go and then secretly go or don't or my
- 43:17Speaker 2: sister said she wants to come, so now, like, don't
- 43:19Speaker 2: don't do that. Have a frank conversation with this person
- 43:23Speaker 2: if you respect them enough to reach out and ask
- 43:25Speaker 2: for advice, and you know, if you if you have,
- 43:28Speaker 2: I think the opportunity to say to them like I
- 43:29Speaker 2: really respect this, and you know, yeah, maybe offering to
- 43:32Speaker 2: say I want to do all of this and I
- 43:34Speaker 2: know you can only for to do this, I'll meet
- 43:36Speaker 2: you in Greece. Yeah, shout you a drink.
- 43:38Speaker 5: Yeah, totally. I think that's a great, great, great idea.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Oh, so let's all go to Greece. I love going
- 43:44Speaker 2: somewhere warm iment Right, So what.
- 43:46Speaker 5: Time are we leaving time out? What did everybody else say?
- 43:49Speaker 7: Yes?
- 43:49Speaker 4: Also, the other thing is your summer is a little
- 43:51Speaker 4: while away, so you still have plenty of time to
- 43:53Speaker 4: make this not uncomfortable. Okay, So let's see what the
- 43:56Speaker 4: community had to say. So the first question we asked
- 43:59Speaker 4: was if you had a similar experience when traveling with
- 44:01Speaker 4: a friend. Forty six percent of you said yes, and
- 44:04Speaker 4: fifty four percent of you said no. It's a pretty
- 44:07Speaker 4: close split. It's a pretty good split. Next question we asked,
- 44:10Speaker 4: if yes, what ended up happening. Twenty six percent of
- 44:14Speaker 4: you said, we traveled together and it was a disaster.
- 44:17Speaker 2: So many people to have a terrible time.
- 44:19Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a real shame.
- 44:21Speaker 4: Fifty four percent of you said we both compromised to
- 44:23Speaker 4: make the trip work, and twenty one percent of you
- 44:26Speaker 4: said we decided it was best we don't go together.
- 44:30Speaker 2: That's interesting and I think I'd be keen to find
- 44:32Speaker 2: out from the fifty four percent.
- 44:33Speaker 5: And how did that?
- 44:34Speaker 2: God, did you secretly feel yourself in the twenty six percent.
- 44:38Speaker 2: You know, I think it would be really interesting to
- 44:40Speaker 2: know that. But I think that's a really good indication
- 44:43Speaker 2: of what we've just said in the three viewpoints that
- 44:44Speaker 2: we've kind of had it, which is you should try
- 44:46Speaker 2: to maybe compromise a little bit, but not too much.
- 44:48Speaker 4: So yes, exactly exactly. And the next thing we asked was,
- 44:52Speaker 4: if you were traveling with a friend, what's the first
- 44:54Speaker 4: thing you would decide on. Fifty eight percent of you
- 44:57Speaker 4: said budget, and then pick location based off of that,
- 45:00Speaker 4: and forty two percent of you said location, talk budget
- 45:04Speaker 4: later on, which is interesting, chicken or egg?
- 45:08Speaker 1: Egg?
- 45:08Speaker 5: Exactly what would you do? What would you think?
- 45:10Speaker 2: I actually answered this question, and I'm a budget first. Yeah,
- 45:14Speaker 2: but I learned that lesson the hard way by making plans,
- 45:17Speaker 2: not specifically trouble plans, but in the past, making a
- 45:19Speaker 2: plan that was all about what I wanted to happen
- 45:21Speaker 2: at the end, and then reverse engineering a budget and
- 45:24Speaker 2: realizing I didn't happen of money. Yeah, And so I
- 45:28Speaker 2: think that I've learned the lesson now that talk budget,
- 45:31Speaker 2: because you immediately know whether you're traveling five kilometers fifty
- 45:34Speaker 2: kmeters a five thousand clocks.
- 45:35Speaker 5: Totally, totally, I absolutely agree with that.
- 45:37Speaker 4: It's like saying, let's go to Gimlet, which is a
- 45:39Speaker 4: very expensive restaurant here in Melbourne for those who don't know,
- 45:42Speaker 4: but only having twenty dollars on your person.
- 45:45Speaker 2: And this kind of reminds me of that TikTok I
- 45:47Speaker 2: saw a few months back where that guy was saying
- 45:48Speaker 2: he wanted to go to a friend's birthday thing and
- 45:50Speaker 2: they were doing dinner then drinks, and he didn't want
- 45:52Speaker 2: to go to the dinner because the entree was like
- 45:53Speaker 2: forty dollars, so he said he'd agree and meet for drinks,
- 45:55Speaker 2: and apparently it caused a big blow up with him
- 45:57Speaker 2: and his friend. And so I'm kind of like, yeah,
- 45:59Speaker 2: I I aspire to be the person that only comes
- 46:02Speaker 2: to drinks and doesn't spend forty dollars on it on trade,
- 46:03Speaker 2: but yeah, I can't help myself because I get fomo,
- 46:07Speaker 2: And so yeah, I definitely think that talking about like
- 46:09Speaker 2: comparing restaurants and other types of experiences, what's the compromise.
- 46:12Speaker 2: This person thought they were doing a great job of
- 46:14Speaker 2: compromising by saying I'll just come for drinks, but sometimes
- 46:16Speaker 2: that can cause an issue to having a conversation is
- 46:19Speaker 2: the only answer. Yeah, we got another question.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Well then we asked for your two cents. So someone
- 46:23Speaker 4: said I would send this message to the girlfriend. She's understanding,
- 46:26Speaker 4: she will understand, which I totally agree. And that's what
- 46:29Speaker 4: you were saying, Jess, like basically say everything you said
- 46:32Speaker 4: to us, but to her.
- 46:33Speaker 5: Yeah, see how that goes down. Someone else said, be
- 46:36Speaker 5: straight up.
- 46:36Speaker 4: They might be embarrassed otherwise, which I can understand definitely,
- 46:40Speaker 4: Like if you're like, you know, your budget is a
- 46:42Speaker 4: bit low, it might come across as like maybe you're
- 46:45Speaker 4: being shamed because you just don't have to travel, which
- 46:47Speaker 4: it is definitely like a delicate one because having been there,
- 46:50Speaker 4: and I feel like, you know, maybe the people in
- 46:52Speaker 4: this room as well, have been in a situation where
- 46:53Speaker 4: you can't really afford things and you kind of feel
- 46:56Speaker 4: you shame yourself first, and to have that someone else
- 46:59Speaker 4: kind of come and say, hey, Bee, because you can't
- 47:01Speaker 4: afford X y Z, I don't want to do this
- 47:04Speaker 4: with you, it can be you know.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think maybe the approach is I'm worried that, like,
- 47:09Speaker 2: you know, I think if you want to expand a
- 47:11Speaker 2: little bit on the part where they said they're worried
- 47:12Speaker 2: about this certain thing, use an actual experience. I'm worried
- 47:15Speaker 2: that we might go to dinner and then I'm going
- 47:17Speaker 2: to order a big meal and you you're not gonna
- 47:18Speaker 2: want to order anything. You're gonna order something small. I
- 47:20Speaker 2: don't want you to have a bad time, but I
- 47:22Speaker 2: really don't want to have to not have something nice
- 47:24Speaker 2: because I've saved for a really long time to have this.
- 47:26Speaker 2: So what I want to figure out with you is
- 47:28Speaker 2: how can we maybe plan the trip that means that
- 47:30Speaker 2: I can still do all the boogie things I want
- 47:31Speaker 2: to do, and that maybe we meet up at the end, Like,
- 47:34Speaker 2: I think, have a plan of what you think might work,
- 47:36Speaker 2: because if you have a sense of this person's budget,
- 47:37Speaker 2: you might actually know, and if you've also got an
- 47:39Speaker 2: itinery kind of half cooked, you might know where you're
- 47:42Speaker 2: planning to be and what places they're Like, I really
- 47:44Speaker 2: want to go to Prague, but I don't really care
- 47:45Speaker 2: about going to insert the name of another European country.
- 47:48Speaker 2: I mean in Europe. Can't tell. And I think that
- 47:51Speaker 2: I think actually come up with a solution. Yeah, don't
- 47:53Speaker 2: go with I don't want to I think be clear
- 47:56Speaker 2: about what you do want and then what you think
- 47:58Speaker 2: the solution might be. Because you've identified issue very corporatives.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Someone else said, don't did your friend find the compromise?
- 48:07Speaker 4: Hostiles are an amazing way to meet people. That is
- 48:09Speaker 4: so true, But some people.
- 48:11Speaker 5: I would not do a hofestyle. That's it. I personally
- 48:13Speaker 5: I love a hostel.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Maybe we'll go together one day you can experience that.
- 48:18Speaker 6: I just it's a safe like I know that many Actually,
- 48:20Speaker 6: when I went to the UK with f D, we
- 48:22Speaker 6: stayed in a hostel.
- 48:23Speaker 5: We had a private room because it was five of us.
- 48:25Speaker 5: So like that I'm fine with.
- 48:26Speaker 6: But I just I get very scared when I don't
- 48:30Speaker 6: know people and say, like a hostel for me, it doesn't.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Worry, whereas you can imagine, I'd just be rolling in
- 48:34Speaker 2: hot and like everyone, I would run the hostel by
- 48:37Speaker 2: the time.
- 48:38Speaker 4: And then lastly, someone else said, it's the girlfriend. I'd compromise,
- 48:41Speaker 4: do a bit of both, or stay longer and do
- 48:43Speaker 4: your stuff when they're gone, which I think is exactly
- 48:45Speaker 4: what you're saying, April, and just really honestly, just be open, honest,
- 48:49Speaker 4: try and find a way to work around it, maybe
- 48:51Speaker 4: create a hybrid of both holiday ideas and everyone will
- 48:54Speaker 4: have a lovely time. But just make sure you all
- 48:56Speaker 4: have fun and everything is open.
- 48:59Speaker 5: Honest end, what are we.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Talking about now? I mean these still.
- 49:06Speaker 5: Apply, still apply everywhere.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Make sure there's after care and informed consent for your
- 49:13Speaker 2: own trips to inform consent exactly, enthusiastic consent, ideally.
- 49:16Speaker 5: Okay.
- 49:18Speaker 4: I think it's a really good place to leave it.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Thank you so much April for joining us.
- 49:22Speaker 5: I had so much fun. Yes, And if we want
- 49:24Speaker 5: to find you, where can they find you?
- 49:25Speaker 2: I am at the Mozilla on Instagram and I guess
- 49:28Speaker 2: if you find me there, you can find me anywhere.
- 49:30Speaker 4: Incredible, amazing. All right, Victoria will see you guys on
