- 0:00If you've ever found yourself thinking, why does this happen
- 0:04for everyone else but not me? If you've ever found yourself
- 0:07thinking, why couldn't I be so lucky, then this episode is for
- 0:13you. OK, so last year there were two
- 0:23Tik Tokers who seemingly blew up out of nowhere.
- 0:27Like seemingly overnight. Both of them reached several
- 0:30million followers in I mean like weeks.
- 0:34I think like just a crazy fast blow up.
- 0:38I don't want to talk about them by name, so I'll call one of
- 0:42them Mary and the other for one Katie.
- 0:47So it doesn't really matter? Yeah, it doesn't really matter
- 0:52anyway. So to backtrack, the two of them
- 0:55blew up seemingly overnight. And then one of them, Mary, I
- 1:00noticed, I've noticed, I feel like she's almost like flailing
- 1:05a bit the past few months. She keeps like changing niches
- 1:10and changing what she talks about and changing her formats.
- 1:15And she said that she dropped her management company and all
- 1:18these things. And the other one, Katie
- 1:22actually just announced that she's not even doing this
- 1:24anymore. And I had this moment where
- 1:30maybe I'm projecting onto them, but I think I know what's going
- 1:33on. And I think that there is a
- 1:35bigger lesson here for the rest of us.
- 1:37I think with both of them, they started achieving the success
- 1:41that they wanted so rapidly. And then as the algorithm does,
- 1:46as things happen in life, everyone has ups and downs.
- 1:50Everyone has big growth eras, everyone has flop eras in every
- 1:53facet of their life, right. So I think that they were
- 1:58growing, growing, growing got to somewhere really, really
- 2:01quickly. And then all of a sudden they
- 2:03were like, wait a second, the growth stops or slows.
- 2:08You know, like everyone plateaus.
- 2:10They stop having that virality that they're used to and then
- 2:14all of a sudden everything just feels bland and dull.
- 2:17And so I think that that's why Mary keeps re pivoting because I
- 2:21think that she I can feel exactly what she's going through
- 2:25where she's like, Oh my God, am I like shadow band?
- 2:27Like is it because of this? Maybe I should change niches
- 2:30because TikTok is suppressing this kind of content.
- 2:34I think that they're constantly like re pivoting and trying new
- 2:38things and nothing is seemingly nothing is sticking and landing.
- 2:43And I think that that's where their frustration comes from.
- 2:46And I think ultimately the issue is that they grew so quickly
- 2:52that when things plateaued, they actually didn't know how to
- 2:56handle it because they weren't used to it.
- 2:58They just thought it was always going to be like that.
- 3:01And it really reminds me of something I thought for a long
- 3:06time, which is that I think that we are better poised to sustain
- 3:15whatever good things are in our lives when we have to work
- 3:20harder for them than if they come easier.
- 3:23And I've seen this in so many things, right?
- 3:26Like weight loss is a good example.
- 3:28People who lose weight really rapidly tend to gain it back.
- 3:32People who lose weight in a more slow way.
- 3:35That's why it's called slow and sustainable.
- 3:37It tends to be more sustainable. They tend to be making lifestyle
- 3:41changes that are actually sustainable.
- 3:43When you lose weight really rapidly, it generally comes from
- 3:46a very rapid and aggressive reduction in calories, which is
- 3:53not sustainable. I'm case in point, right?
- 3:55Like look at, I mean, we like we all have eyes, right?
- 3:58We can call a spade a spade. Like, I'm bigger now than I was
- 4:01last year. But hi Sam, hi sweet girl.
- 4:06Hi sweet girl. And if you really were to look
- 4:09at my entire adult life, my weight tends to fluctuate a lot
- 4:12because I have a pretty unhealthy relationship with
- 4:15food, although I am working on it in therapy.
- 4:17So watch out, bitches. It's about to be a whole
- 4:21different thing anyway. But the reason I could never
- 4:26hold on to my like, super like think like right when I came
- 4:29back from Mexico City, I was like snatched to the gods.
- 4:32But the reason I couldn't hang on to that body is because the
- 4:35way I got there was so unsustainable.
- 4:38I really wasn't eating enough. And so of course then I start
- 4:42overeating and I went through, I mean, just this months and
- 4:45months and months long binging episode because I was
- 4:49undernourished before. Completely lost my train of
- 4:57thought. I think that that's just one
- 4:59example. That's a very tangible example,
- 5:01but other ways that I think this shows up.
- 5:04You know, I, I was single for so long, right?
- 5:08So single, desperately wanted to find someone.
- 5:10I really felt like everyone I had ever met found each other.
- 5:16Like I remember one time I was at my best friend's wedding and
- 5:20every single person at that wedding was in a serious
- 5:25relationship other than me, the bride's mother, and the bride's
- 5:30brother, which actually ended up being fun because the three of
- 5:33us had a lot of fun together that night.
- 5:35But I remember look, looking around and being like, how is it
- 5:39that every single person here has found their pair other than
- 5:45me? Like how is that even possible?
- 5:48Like what? Like it just felt like, like,
- 5:51did you ever miss a day of school in elementary school?
- 5:54And then the next day you go back or high school, whatever
- 5:57and you're like, shit, like we must have covered something
- 6:00really important. Like on the one day that I
- 6:02missed, I feel like I'm like completely off track or oh God.
- 6:06I remember when I first started college, I went home one of the
- 6:12early weekends of college. It was like the weekend after
- 6:15rush was over and I felt like my entire pledge class and my
- 6:18sorority had like really bonded and found each other and I was
- 6:21like completely left out. And I was like, fuck me.
- 6:23Like, why did I pick the one weekend to leave when everyone's
- 6:27like bonding with each other? Like it just felt like I was
- 6:32like, did I miss a day of school and everyone partnered up and I
- 6:36come back and I'm like odd man out.
- 6:38Like what the fuck is happening? And over time, something
- 6:42interesting has happened. A lot of those relationships
- 6:46have fallen apart. Meanwhile, I found my person and
- 6:52like, it's such a good relationship and I'm so like, I
- 6:56would not trade anything in the world for us to have met sooner
- 7:01or me to have not been single all those years.
- 7:04I think that that singleness gave me this runway and this
- 7:10impetus to do so much inner work, which is the reason why my
- 7:14relationship is as harmonious and as successful and as happy
- 7:18as it is today. It's because I did so much inner
- 7:21work. And the reason I did so much
- 7:23inner work is because I didn't have that person.
- 7:27And so I was like, like, let me try to fix all the things that
- 7:30are wrong with me, which also, by the way, is a deluded way of
- 7:33thinking and not accurate. But nevertheless, it caused me
- 7:36to do so much in her work, which is why my relationship is not
- 7:40good. And I was talking to my friends
- 7:42about Mary and Katie, the two tick tockers, and I was like, I
- 7:46like, I've never reached the level of success that they have,
- 7:50but I've had minor versions of it.
- 7:54So I feel like I can really relate to what they're going
- 7:56through. But the difference is, I, I
- 7:58think that I would be better poised to handle the flop era
- 8:02that comes after a really successful era because I've
- 8:06already experienced it in more minor ways because like, my
- 8:10growth hasn't been that rapid because I have tried so hard.
- 8:13I know what it feels like to try so fucking hard and get nothing
- 8:18in response. And so all of this has got me
- 8:21thinking, like everyone talks about lucky girl syndrome and
- 8:24like all this stuff. And I do think that mindset is
- 8:27so important and how we talk to ourselves is so important.
- 8:30But what if there's a lot of beauty in unlucky girl syndrome?
- 8:34Like what if? What if by being the ones who
- 8:42have, have, how do I want to phrase this, have a harder it
- 8:49like it's more of a challenge to get our footing?
- 8:53What if that is the secret sauce?
- 8:55What if we're lucky that we're unlucky?
- 8:58Like what if the luckiest thing is it actually being more
- 9:03challenging to get there? Because ultimately that could
- 9:08mean so much more sustainability.
- 9:12I don't know, just a little food for a thought.
- 9:14If like, if you find yourself thinking like, why couldn't I be
- 9:17so lucky? What if you reframe it and be
- 9:19like, man, I am so fucking lucky that it's not coming easily to
- 9:26me? Like, how lucky is that?
- 9:31Just a thought. I mean, you're already unlucky,
- 9:33may as well be grateful for it, huh?
- 9:36Huh. I don't know, what do you think?
- 9:39What if that is the key to lucky girl syndrome?
- 9:42It's actually realizing how lucky you really are that you're
- 9:49quote UN quote unlucky. Just a thought.
- 9:53Anyway, I'm going to go, it's Blizzard day, things are pure
- 10:00chaos here. We'll try next week.
- 10:03Also tune into Blush Kitchen on Thursday, it is an episode where
- 10:08I make 6 tacos in like minutes for each one because we already
- 10:13did all the meal prepping last week.
- 10:15So. And if you haven't watched the
- 10:16meal prep episode, go check that out because I think it is the
- 10:20most helpful framework out there for eating healthy.
- 10:23Should I have to go? There's something wrong with
- 10:25Sam. You OK Mama?
- 10:26It's OK. It's OK.
- 10:26It's OK.
