  SPEAKER_05: Maybe.

  SPEAKER_06: Sharing it with everyone.

  SPEAKER_06: We're good, Parker.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_06: Tell us how you are.
• 2:33
  SPEAKER_06: We want to know.
• 2:34
  SPEAKER_03: I'm fabulous.
• 2:34
SPEAKER_03: I've never been better because I have been waiting absolute eons to watch this week's movie ever since it was announced in 2019.
• 2:44
SPEAKER_03: I have been absolutely just itching to watch Willie's Wonderland.
• 2:51
SPEAKER_03: I'm so excited that the day has arrived where I can watch more Nicolas Cage shenanigans.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_03: That's all I ever want to do.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_06: I mean a lot to unpack there already.
• 3:05
SPEAKER_06: Um didn't know you were a Nick Cage fan.
• 3:10
  SPEAKER_06: Who is it?
• 3:11
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I wouldn't I like the word fan, like what does that even mean?
• 3:17
SPEAKER_03: Like, it's more like Nicolas Cage is a lifestyle.
• 3:20
  SPEAKER_05: No one's a Nick Cage fan.
• 3:22
  SPEAKER_05: They're more of a Nick Cage.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_06: I am sure there is someone out there in the world that has a Nicolas Cage poster on their wall.
• 3:31
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but I don't think I don't think it's because of him.
• 3:35
SPEAKER_05: I think it's because of what he represents.
• 3:38
  SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, what's that?
• 3:39
  SPEAKER_03: And what's that?
• 3:40
SPEAKER_05: Think of all the iconic movies he's in and the storylines that are go along with that.
• 3:47
  SPEAKER_05: Like, it's escapism.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_05: You want to be Nick Cage in those movies.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_05: You want to be in the national treasure endeavor type thing.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_05: And so I feel like you're not a fan of him, but you're typically a big fan of his perceived lifestyle.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_03: You know what is the wildest thing ever?
• 4:09
SPEAKER_03: This is almost exactly what is in the um the production statement in the press uh press assets for Willie's Wonderland.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_03: Let me find this quote that is almost exactly what Ian just said.
• 4:29
  SPEAKER_06: Ian.
• 4:29
  SPEAKER_06: Prophetic.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_03: So this is from the director Kevin Lewis, uh, and this is a statement that was released about the movie with the movie.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_03: It says, Lewis identifies Cage as the crucial factor in getting the script made.
• 4:43
SPEAKER_03: The actor's participation lifted the film out of buckets like horror or comedy and into a special realm of its own.
• 4:51
SPEAKER_03: Quote, I think Nick is his own genre, the director says.
• 4:56
  SPEAKER_03: He's a movie star, but he's also a character actor.
• 5:01
SPEAKER_03: He's done so many amazing films, dot dot dot, uh, skipping, and then he had an action phase, and that's what this needed because it is a very crazy, wacky concept.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_03: Suddenly, our film was a Nick Cage movie.
• 5:17
  SPEAKER_03: That's why he's perfect for this.
• 5:20
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 5:21
  SPEAKER_05: Truth.
• 5:22
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 5:22
  SPEAKER_03: Truth.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_03: And do you want to hear an extremely, I think, um I was really moved by this quote from Nick Cage in these same notes.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_03: Do you want to hear it?
• 5:33
  SPEAKER_03: Ready for it?
• 5:34
SPEAKER_03: I think it'll really set the tone for the conversation we're about to have.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_03: So again, this is from Nicolas Cage.
• 5:41
  SPEAKER_03: It says verbatim.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_03: Quote I love family entertainment centers.
• 5:46
  SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry I don't get to still go to Chuck E.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_03: Cheese because all my kids are grown up.
• 5:50
  SPEAKER_03: I love Chuck E.
• 5:51
  SPEAKER_03: Cheese.
• 5:52
  SPEAKER_03: Great pizza.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_03: Not that this is supposed to be Chuck E.
• 5:55
  SPEAKER_03: Cheese.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_03: I gotta be careful what I say.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_03: But I used to go there.
• 5:58
SPEAKER_03: And I enjoyed the ski ball, and I enjoyed the pizza, and I enjoyed the Diet Coke and the orange soda.
• 6:04
  SPEAKER_03: Nice ice cream cakes.
• 6:06
SPEAKER_03: Great place for a birthday party.
• 6:10
  SPEAKER_05: Are you kidding?
• 6:13
SPEAKER_03: That is a quotation that was sent to the press from the PR team for Willie's Wonderland.
• 6:22
  SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh.
• 6:23
  SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_05: That is perfectly Nicolas Cage.
• 6:27
  SPEAKER_05: No, that's a perfect description.
• 6:30
SPEAKER_05: That is a perfect PR quote for this movie.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_05: I think it's perfectly parallels the dramatic nature of the movie.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_06: And also, like, snaps to Chuck E.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_06: Cheese, they need to put that on their marketing.
• 6:46
  SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
• 6:46
  SPEAKER_03: Great pizza.
• 6:47
SPEAKER_03: Riddle me this, my co-host.
• 6:49
SPEAKER_03: Have you been to Chuck E.
• 6:51
  SPEAKER_03: Cheese?
• 6:52
  SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
• 6:53
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 6:53
  SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
• 6:54
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_03: I've been to many a birthday party at Chucky Cheese.
• 6:56
SPEAKER_03: And if Nicolas Cage is right about one thing, great pizza.
• 7:01
SPEAKER_05: I've also been to I've also been to off-brand um places just like in the movie.
• 7:08
SPEAKER_05: And I have to I have to say I distinctly remember there was this place back home called the Squirmy Worm.
• 7:17
SPEAKER_05: And it had those animatronic type characters, but my grandma used to take me and I had a ball every single time.
• 7:26
  SPEAKER_05: So much fun.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_03: There were definitely people being murdered at the squirmy worm.
• 7:31
  SPEAKER_05: Well, wait, but wait.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_05: But then one day I found out that a kid was kidnapped from the squirmy worm like a month before, and I never got excited about the squirmy worm again.
• 7:49
  SPEAKER_05: I kid you not.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_05: It was called the squirmy worm.
• 7:52
  SPEAKER_06: Oh my god.
• 7:53
  SPEAKER_05: Lima, Ohio.
• 7:54
SPEAKER_06: You know, all I could think about during this movie was how gross and germy ball pits are.
• 8:05
  SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
• 8:06
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I used to go to Chuck E.
• 8:07
SPEAKER_03: Cheese a lot when I was really young.
• 8:09
SPEAKER_03: And even when the local Chuck E.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_03: Cheese I went to was up and running full force, like those animatronics, they looked grimy.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_05: I just looked it up because I had I had to know if I was.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_05: Sorry, it wasn't the squirmy worm.
• 8:25
SPEAKER_05: It was actually called squirty worm.
• 8:30
SPEAKER_05: And Google says it is permanently closed.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_03: I was going to make a joke about, oh, you must have called something else the squirmy worm, but squirty worm is worried.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_06: Ew, it's called squirty worm.
• 8:44
SPEAKER_05: It's where my grandma took.
• 8:46
  SPEAKER_06: Look at this.
• 8:49
  SPEAKER_05: That's where I w that's how I grew up.
• 8:52
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 8:54
SPEAKER_05: And it's no wonder some kid got kidnapped.
• 8:57
SPEAKER_03: Alright, well, all of that to say, we are finally discussing Willie's Wonderland.
• 9:04
  SPEAKER_03: Willie's Wonderland, a film that came out on February 12th, 2021.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_03: Willie's Wonderland was directed by Kevin Lewis.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_03: And Kevin Lewis had other films that he'd also directed, and even some he'd written, but I guarantee you Willie's Wonderland is about to be the gem of his career.
• 9:26
SPEAKER_03: It was written by G.
• 9:28
  SPEAKER_03: O.
• 9:28
  SPEAKER_03: Parsons.
• 9:30
SPEAKER_03: And Parsons was primarily a stage actor and writer, but decided to expand his repertory when he created a short film in 2016 called Wally's Wonderland, which was later changed for copyright reasons.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_03: He submitted a feature-length version of the script to Bloodlist.
• 9:51
SPEAKER_03: Do y'all know what the blacklist is?
• 9:54
  SPEAKER_05: I feel like I do.
• 9:55
  SPEAKER_05: No.
• 9:56
  SPEAKER_05: But no.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_03: So the blacklist is um writers can submit um scripts to the blacklist, and every year there is some sort of voting process, and the best scripts are published to the blacklist, and like producer people making movies actually look at the blacklist, and a lot of times will pick scripts from it to make into movies.
• 10:18
SPEAKER_03: So the blood list is like the horror version of the blacklist.
• 10:22
SPEAKER_03: And so Parsons had put the script for Willie's Wonderland on the blood list, and Nicolas Cage himself had seen the script and agreed to produce and star in it.
• 10:33
  SPEAKER_03: How inspirational is that?
• 10:35
  SPEAKER_03: A Rags to Rich's Tale.
• 10:38
SPEAKER_06: New low for Nicolas Cage.
• 10:41
SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of Nicolas Cage uh information flying around this podcast so far, so why don't we get to the facts, Caroline?
• 10:51
SPEAKER_06: Number one, Nicolas Cage as the janitor.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_06: He is an Academy Award-winning actor, producer, director, extraordinaire.
• 11:06
SPEAKER_06: Parker, what's your favorite Nicolas Cage movie?
• 11:09
SPEAKER_03: Ooh, um Nicolas Cage, Nicholas.
• 11:13
SPEAKER_03: Wow, suddenly I'm drawing such a blank.
• 11:17
  SPEAKER_01: Tends to happen.
• 11:19
SPEAKER_05: Oh, I mean as cliche as as Nicolas Cle Cage as it is.
• 11:28
  SPEAKER_05: National Treasure.
• 11:29
  SPEAKER_05: The first.
• 11:30
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's literally the only thing that comes to mind.
• 11:33
SPEAKER_05: I mean, I know I've seen so many movies with him, but I don't remember them.
• 11:39
SPEAKER_03: You know, I was never a national treasure fan, actually.
• 11:44
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, I was totally.
• 11:45
SPEAKER_06: I uh I was living for the memes that came out of the uh storm on the capital with Nicolas Cage, so glad he got that resurgence there.
• 11:55
SPEAKER_03: You know, actually, I was a bit of a Nicolas Cage hater because my parents loved The Family Man.
• 12:03
  SPEAKER_03: Uh the Christmas movie.
• 12:05
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_03: And I despised The Family Man.
• 12:09
SPEAKER_03: I would assume because I was too young to actually understand any of the jokes in that movie, and so I thought it was really boring.
• 12:16
SPEAKER_03: But I had a real hatred for Nicolas Cage when I was younger.
• 12:20
SPEAKER_06: Anyway, he has become a horror connoisseur as of late, um, starring in niche gems like Mandy in 2018, Color Out of Space in 2019, and there's an upcoming film that Parker is very excited about called Prisoners of Ghostland.
• 12:41
SPEAKER_03: I'm pretty sure Nicolas Cage himself is on record saying that Prisoners of Ghostland is the craziest movie he's ever been in, so I cannot wait for that.
• 12:50
SPEAKER_06: Wow, setting the bar high.
• 12:53
SPEAKER_06: Um, we have Emily Toasta as Live.
• 12:58
SPEAKER_06: This is actually her first feature film.
• 13:01
SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna throw some stuff in the Toaster.
• 13:04
  SPEAKER_05: Oh boo.
• 13:07
SPEAKER_06: Um, she's previously starred in the recent reboot of the show Party of Five and the FX series Mayans and C.
• 13:17
SPEAKER_06: Beth Grant plays the role of Sheriff Lund.
• 13:21
SPEAKER_06: Um she's one of those performers who you've probably seen in more than one film, um, or tell television series for that matter, maybe recognize her from Child's Play 2 from 1990, Speed from 1994, and Donnie Darko in 2001.
• 13:44
SPEAKER_03: You've seen Donnie Darko, right?
• 13:47
  SPEAKER_03: No.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.
• 13:54
  SPEAKER_03: Iconic.
• 13:56
SPEAKER_05: The summary of this motion thing.
• 14:00
SPEAKER_05: After encountering car trouble, a mysterious man agrees to be the overnight janitor at a rundown, children's arcade restaurant thing called Willie's Wonderland to pay for his tires to be replaced.
• 14:19
SPEAKER_05: Little does he know Willie's Wonderland is haunted by a cast of evil animatronic characters that he must fight to survive the night.
• 14:29
SPEAKER_05: Things get extra complicated when a group of teens, led by Liv break in to destroy the building and end up being murdered one by one throughout the night.
• 14:41
SPEAKER_05: I know that's not the whole story, but we'll get to it.
• 14:45
  SPEAKER_05: We'll get to it.
• 14:48
SPEAKER_05: The Rotten Tomatoes critic score is sixty-one percent.
• 14:54
  SPEAKER_05: Liberal.
• 14:56
SPEAKER_05: The audience score seventy-nine percent.
• 15:01
  SPEAKER_05: The fuck?
• 15:04
SPEAKER_05: The critics consensus is quote Willie's Wonderland isn't quite as much fun as its premise would suggest.
• 15:13
SPEAKER_05: But it's still got Nicolas Cage beating the hell out of a bloodthirsty animatronics, which is nice.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_03: I love that consensus, and I just want to mention that in an interview with the YouTube channel 3C Films, the writer Parsons said that if the film gets enough support, he will write a sequel.
• 15:38
  SPEAKER_03: Oh.
• 15:39
  SPEAKER_05: No.
• 15:40
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 15:41
  SPEAKER_05: Why?
• 15:42
SPEAKER_03: Alright, so specifically, I want to save kind of the complexities of the twists of the mysteries for later that are, you know, encapsulated in the complexity of this film.
• 15:54
SPEAKER_03: But I want to know, just broad, broad strokes, what you guys thought of Willie's Wonderland.
• 16:06
SPEAKER_06: I mean, Ian had a very physical gut reaction to this movie.
• 16:11
  SPEAKER_05: Really?
• 16:12
SPEAKER_06: In the first ten minutes.
• 16:14
  SPEAKER_05: Physical?
• 16:15
  SPEAKER_06: Well, a gut reaction.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_05: No, I think we both did.
• 16:20
  SPEAKER_05: You did as well.
• 16:21
  SPEAKER_05: And try not to.
• 16:22
SPEAKER_06: I'm a little bit more open-minded than she dislikes.
• 16:26
  SPEAKER_03: What's happening here?
• 16:28
SPEAKER_03: I need first of all, I need a little space for Jesus between you two.
• 16:33
SPEAKER_03: And second, I need to know what the hell y'all are talking about.
• 16:39
SPEAKER_03: What is this visceral reaction that both of you apparently had?
• 16:44
SPEAKER_06: I thought it was kind of a joke of a movie at first.
• 16:47
  SPEAKER_06: I was like, what's happening here?
• 16:50
SPEAKER_06: Are there people out in the world watching this for the first time that are taking this seriously?
• 16:56
SPEAKER_06: Because first 20 minutes, okay, we get Nicolas Cage and we're like, What is this?
• 17:04
  SPEAKER_06: What's happening?
• 17:05
SPEAKER_06: And then it just keeps getting more and more ridiculous.
• 17:10
SPEAKER_06: About two-thirds of the movie, in I was like, Oh, this is like a legit movie.
• 17:17
SPEAKER_06: And they made a legit movie off of this premise, and it's ridiculous.
• 17:22
SPEAKER_03: Was that a positive or negative reveal?
• 17:27
  SPEAKER_05: I'm leaving it open.
• 17:29
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're leaving it open for just being the opposite of whatever I say.
• 17:34
SPEAKER_03: Alright, well, we'll save the we'll build a combative.
• 17:37
SPEAKER_03: We'll build the tension for the Smasher Slash at the end.
• 17:41
SPEAKER_03: Ian, I need to know now what the truth is.
• 17:45
  SPEAKER_03: No fake news.
• 17:46
SPEAKER_03: What is the truth of your thoughts?
• 17:50
  SPEAKER_05: It's a pretty bad movie.
• 17:53
SPEAKER_05: It's it's like one of the worst movies we've ever watched.
• 17:57
SPEAKER_03: So, but do you have any reasons why you didn't have a second of fun watching this movie?
• 18:03
SPEAKER_05: The only second of fun I had was the correlation between Squirty Worm and Willie's Wonderland.
• 18:12
SPEAKER_05: So, in that regard, I was like, man, this takes me back to when I almost was murdered in, you know, with an animatronic.
• 18:21
SPEAKER_05: But beyond that, I was just like, how did they get Nick Cage?
• 18:25
SPEAKER_05: Like, it said he was actually interested in the script, and I'm like, what script?
• 18:33
SPEAKER_05: I could have vomited a better script.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_03: Alright, well, I know that you're just bursting at the seams, waiting to hear what I thought of Willie's Wonderland.
• 18:43
SPEAKER_03: And do you know what?
• 18:44
SPEAKER_03: You can stitch those seams up because I'll tell you right now, no more bursting required.
• 18:49
SPEAKER_03: Um, I thought it was great.
• 18:50
  SPEAKER_03: I had a I had a really good time watching Willie's Wonderland.
• 18:53
SPEAKER_03: You know, I don't want to say that you two are trash per se, but I think that it's a little bit of understanding to get Willie's Wonderland because there's a certain breed of like cult B movie that this movie is parodying.
• 19:12
SPEAKER_03: I will admit though, there when you look up reviews of like Scream 3, the reviews of Scream 3 all say, like, oh, Scream has become what it was making fun of, and that's a bad thing.
• 19:25
SPEAKER_03: And I think to a certain extent, Willie's Wonderland is making a joke out of cult movies in a way that it kind of falls victim to becoming a bad B movie in some ways.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_03: And I do think that, like I've said about other movies, it could take a little bit more Gremlin's approach where it could get a little wilder.
• 19:46
SPEAKER_03: But I thought it did a pretty good job.
• 19:48
SPEAKER_03: Like I thought it was pretty crazy.
• 19:50
SPEAKER_03: I I'll tell you, the the one scene that I thought, oh no, this is a bad movie, and it really has no excuse for this scene being as bad as it was.
• 20:02
SPEAKER_03: But when he fights, the very first fight that he has with the ostrich, I thought the thing is is that the first fight sets the tone for the movie.
• 20:13
SPEAKER_03: That needed to be that's when the animatronics revealed themselves as being bad.
• 20:18
SPEAKER_03: You know, it's been teasing you up until then.
• 20:20
SPEAKER_03: I thought that that was a really horrible scene.
• 20:24
SPEAKER_03: The ostrich said something that I'm assuming is irreverent, but I couldn't hear what it said, and then he just killed it.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_03: I was like, this is stupid, this movie's going to be terrible because I'm only here for these evil animatronics, and clearly they can't even do that.
• 20:38
SPEAKER_03: But then after that, I thought the gorilla fight was a masterpiece.
• 20:44
  SPEAKER_03: I thought I didn't love the fairy character.
• 20:47
SPEAKER_03: I thought she wasn't very entertaining, and they really seemed to bring her back a lot.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_06: She wasn't even an animatronic.
• 20:54
SPEAKER_06: You looked at her body, and it was just a woman with a head thing on.
• 20:59
SPEAKER_03: I will say there's probably a practical reason for that because all of the animatronics were people in costumes, stunt performers, and they would do like pop and lock movements when they were animatronics, and they would move more fully when they were fighting.
• 21:14
SPEAKER_03: I read that they only had one costume for each actor, and they couldn't afford to make more, and so once they destroyed the costumes, that was it, that was done.
• 21:24
SPEAKER_03: So I'm assuming that the fairy was used as much as she was just because they could kind of work with her more since she wasn't wearing a costume.
• 21:31
SPEAKER_03: But that's just me assuming my own conjecture.
• 21:36
SPEAKER_03: But I thought besides The Ostrich, which was a real waste, and I think probably loses audiences who are not being forced for a podcast to sit and watch the whole movie.
• 21:48
  SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think that that's a real loss.
• 21:50
SPEAKER_03: But I do think this movie was I laughed out loud many a time.
• 21:54
SPEAKER_03: I thought it was super weird.
• 21:56
SPEAKER_03: There are answers that you don't always get, but I think it doesn't really matter.
• 22:00
SPEAKER_03: Just because it's a weird movie and it doesn't matter that Nicolas Cage is drinking drinks every so often.
• 22:06
SPEAKER_03: Like they're just I thought it by the end that really tickled me because it was like, oh, clearly he's just drinking those because he thinks they're good.
• 22:12
SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just a weird movie, and they've just made choices that don't make sense.
• 22:17
SPEAKER_03: And I just actually have you guys watched Barb and Star go to Vista del Mar yet.
• 22:23
  SPEAKER_07: Mm-mm.
• 22:24
SPEAKER_03: Oh my well, it came out the same day as this.
• 22:26
SPEAKER_03: It's the new Kristen Wig comedy.
• 22:28
SPEAKER_03: And I thought that movie was hilarious.
• 22:32
SPEAKER_03: And it's almost very similar to Willie's Wonderland, just not horror, and that just absolutely nothing about that movie makes sense.
• 22:42
SPEAKER_03: There's just totally off-the-wall, nonsensical things happening.
• 22:46
SPEAKER_03: And I kind of felt like this was a good double feature for me because I watched these two nights in a row.
• 22:54
  SPEAKER_05: I don't I really have a hard time prescribing to this.
• 22:58
SPEAKER_05: Like there's some nuance to this, and the fact that none of it makes sense is a nuance for film um knowledge.
• 23:08
SPEAKER_03: Like, first of all, why are you doing a Donald Trump impersonation?
• 23:14
SPEAKER_05: I th I think if you're making a film, like sure you you need to be you need to have creative latitude to express what you're expressing.
• 23:29
SPEAKER_05: But at the end of the day, what is the point of making or telling a story if you if it has no meaning?
• 23:38
SPEAKER_05: Or like if there is no point.
• 23:40
SPEAKER_03: Like Well, I think you're misinterpreting me a little bit, because I never said nuanced.
• 23:44
SPEAKER_03: I think this is probably the least nuanced movie I've seen.
• 23:47
SPEAKER_03: I think this is probably the most like slapdash to the point thing ever.
• 23:52
SPEAKER_03: I just think that it's smarter in its humor than that.
• 23:57
SPEAKER_03: I think that the simplicity is funny.
• 23:59
SPEAKER_03: Like I think it knows that this movie's a joke, is all I'm saying.
• 24:03
SPEAKER_05: I would I would hope it knows it's a joke, because I would be uh offended by the people that wrote it.
• 24:09
SPEAKER_05: No, I think it produced and directed it on a quality basis.
• 24:12
SPEAKER_06: I think that's where I think they do go about it in that way, and I think that's kind of the art of the B movie aesthetic in the horror genre.
• 24:24
SPEAKER_06: And that I think that is where I have a hard time connecting to these types of movies because every like B movie that I watch, I'm just like, what was the point of that?
• 24:38
SPEAKER_06: But I know that there are people out there that follow that type of movie and love it.
• 24:45
SPEAKER_05: So you're you're saying that the director knows that is aware of that.
• 24:54
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they know that that audience is out there looking for that in particular, and it really does take skill to accomplish it, and I think that they nailed it on the head, or else I would have liked it.
• 25:07
SPEAKER_06: Because the production value is actually pretty good.
• 25:09
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I agree with Caroline because I think that there is a technique to making a bad movie.
• 25:15
SPEAKER_03: Like this is supposed to be a so bad it's good movie, and I think you could tell some of the like fight choreography I thought was very skillful and nice.
• 25:24
SPEAKER_03: And even when like there's the sex scene between Bobby and Kathy, and then sh he spews her with blood, or some when Nicolas Cage was slamming the gorilla's head into the urinal, like I think that there is actually, like Caroline was saying, a lot of technical skill that goes into making this movie where yes, it's ridiculous and over the top, but if they if they skimp on those moments of like the like, yes, this is what we're here for, then it would totally fall apart.
• 25:55
  SPEAKER_03: And I don't think it did.
• 25:56
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 25:57
SPEAKER_06: Even the strobe scene, I think that was kind of like classic, like they got away with a lot, probably lower budgets because of that, and it got the point done.
• 26:09
SPEAKER_06: Um the dance scene, Nicolas Cage's dance.
• 26:13
SPEAKER_03: I can tell you right now completely improvised.
• 26:17
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 26:18
SPEAKER_06: He was just doing those little hand motions, and I mean that that was a point where I was like, wow, they're they were taking this seriously.
• 26:32
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 26:33
SPEAKER_06: But I know that to an audience that really gets some enjoyment out of it.
• 26:39
SPEAKER_06: I am not in that crowd though.
• 26:41
SPEAKER_03: And I would be curious, there was this another movie that came out just a few weeks ago that people were raving about called Psycho Gore Man, which is similar, uh, where it's like this crazy monster who like accidentally becomes friends with this little girl and boy and is like ripping people to shreds, but then like is learning to be friends with these children.
• 27:04
SPEAKER_03: Like, I think that there is, especially right now, this like market for escapism and nostalgia, and people are ready to see something wild and crazy and colorful because we're all just stuck at home.
• 27:19
SPEAKER_03: I think that movies like Willie's Wonderland give us like a little more fun and uh you know, take me to Chuck E.
• 27:27
SPEAKER_03: Cheese than other movies can.
• 27:30
SPEAKER_03: So I think that there's something positive about that.
• 27:33
SPEAKER_03: But let's look a little bit at this mystery that unfolds throughout the movie.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_03: I have a bit of a summary part two for you.
• 27:42
SPEAKER_03: So a man named Willie opened Willie's Wonderland, of course, and it seemed like a magical children's destination, but actually, Willie was a serial killer who would lure families into the super fun room on their birthdays and murder them and their families.
• 28:01
SPEAKER_03: Not only that, but he was training his employees to be serial killers as well.
• 28:07
SPEAKER_03: Before the law could catch up to Willie and his minions, they performed a group suicide ritual that transported their spirits into the animatronic creatures.
• 28:17
SPEAKER_03: Willie's Wonderland later reopened but was slammed with lawsuits as the characters misbehaved and injured children.
• 28:25
SPEAKER_03: Not only that, but the animatronics began murdering the local townspeople until the sheriff and Willie's new owner, Tex, made a deal with Willy that they would regularly sacrifice people for him to eat.
• 28:39
SPEAKER_03: That included Liv's parents and eventually Nick Cage when the sheriff's zigzag spikes popped his tires.
• 28:47
SPEAKER_03: So, what did you think of this kind of background uh plot that was unfurling throughout the course of the movie?
• 28:58
SPEAKER_06: I definitely had more respect once I had the background.
• 29:05
SPEAKER_06: Um like if they would have just left it as like evil animatronics, I'd be like completely out.
• 29:13
SPEAKER_06: Um but I think it added a fun layer to it.
• 29:19
  SPEAKER_06: Um I don't know.
• 29:23
SPEAKER_06: I think I would have liked to have gotten I say this, but whether or not if it actually would have played out if they went this way.
• 29:29
SPEAKER_06: But like getting to know the individual characters a little bit more and their backstories would be my only critique of that historical context.
• 29:41
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm not totally offline with you.
• 29:44
SPEAKER_03: I actually this movie's really short, it's an hour and 28 minutes.
• 29:48
SPEAKER_03: And my favorite part was actually this backstory and that flashback of the townspeople being murdered by the animatronics.
• 29:55
SPEAKER_03: I actually would have loved to like that was an opportunity, like they gave us some gore and some intestines spilling out, but like I would have actually loved to have like more isolated, like horror movie murder scenes there because obviously we get a lot of death and violence in this movie, but like why not give us more?
• 30:15
SPEAKER_03: You know, I would have loved to see those townspeople kind of ripped apart a little bit more.
• 30:20
SPEAKER_03: Uh obviously they there's this uh stigma against violence against children in movies, and so they kind of play it safe with the children's dy children's the children dying, and I don't know, I would have liked to have seen a child ripped apart.
• 30:38
SPEAKER_06: Well, I think any of the gore that we got with the animatronics, like didn't hit for me.
• 30:46
SPEAKER_06: Because it was like black.
• 30:49
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and it just wasn't they didn't like really fight back.
• 30:53
SPEAKER_06: Nicolas Cage was just like a warrior this entire time, so you didn't really get the gore from his side, and then you see like some steel parts come out of the animatronics, and that was it.
• 31:06
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, and I think that through this whole backstory plot that unfurls, we're supposed to find more emotional empathy with Liv because I mean I guess her backstory from like the first second of the movie, like that wasn't a surprise to me.
• 31:24
SPEAKER_06: I did not connect that very much.
• 31:26
  SPEAKER_06: You didn't took me a while.
• 31:28
SPEAKER_03: Oh the second we met Liv, I was like, oh, that's the child from the beginning, right?
• 31:33
  SPEAKER_06: I I totally forgot.
• 31:35
SPEAKER_06: I was just like trying to piece together Nicholas's cage.
• 31:40
  SPEAKER_03: Nicholas's cage.
• 31:41
  SPEAKER_05: Nicholas's cage.
• 31:44
SPEAKER_03: Uh well, I think that besides the ostrich at the beginning, I mean, this isn't really a f well, this is a failure to me of the movie, but I don't think it detracts from the experience.
• 31:55
SPEAKER_03: But I don't think any of these characters are empathetic at all.
• 31:58
  SPEAKER_03: I don't care about Liv.
• 31:59
SPEAKER_03: I don't care about the other teens, I don't care about the sheriff.
• 32:02
SPEAKER_06: I forgot the other kids were there.
• 32:04
SPEAKER_03: I don't think we're supposed to care about Nicolas Cage, he's just supposed to be like stone badass.
• 32:10
SPEAKER_03: But I do think that if the the movie clearly wanted us to be like Liv, she's such a warrior, like she's so, you know, victorious, overcoming blah I didn't feel any of that.
• 32:21
SPEAKER_03: So I did think that was a failure, but in the kind of scheme of this is a movie about things being ripped apart and crass animatronics, I didn't really care about that.
• 32:32
SPEAKER_03: So but that's more of a personal thing.
• 32:34
SPEAKER_03: But I do think that uh the movie lacked uh lacked some some character development.
• 32:42
SPEAKER_06: I was actually trying digging real deep for some story here, and I was like, what if Nicolas Cage is also an animatronic?
• 32:53
SPEAKER_06: But like a new age one.
• 32:56
SPEAKER_03: I had that thought I was like, what if he's just that he's drinking?
• 33:02
SPEAKER_06: I thought the same thing.
• 33:04
SPEAKER_03: That would have been pretty great because then at the end the finale could have been like Liv and Nicolas Cage facing off as the ultimate battle.
• 33:12
  SPEAKER_06: Maybe that's the sequel.
• 33:14
  SPEAKER_06: Maybe he is.
• 33:15
SPEAKER_03: I think that would have been cool.
• 33:17
SPEAKER_03: I do like the moment where he passes her the it was labeled pop can, which I do not agree with calling soda pop, but he cat passes her the can that says pop, and she has kind of like a ooh, like delicious.
• 33:34
SPEAKER_03: I am now one with Nicolas Cage.
• 33:36
SPEAKER_03: And I was kind of like, I don't know, we could have had an incredible battle instead.
• 33:44
SPEAKER_03: I also wanted Willie's Wonderland to explode.
• 33:46
  SPEAKER_03: I I wanted that.
• 33:48
SPEAKER_06: No, but he did such a good job cleaning.
• 33:50
SPEAKER_03: I know there was some good like cleaning porn when he cleaned that bathroom.
• 33:54
  SPEAKER_03: ASMR was satisfying, yeah.
• 33:55
  SPEAKER_03: I was like, ooh.
• 33:57
  SPEAKER_06: Really satisfying.
• 33:58
SPEAKER_06: I was just I could smell those chemicals he was using, you know.
• 34:03
SPEAKER_06: Um the long stares between Nicolas Cage and Liv really just made me uncomfortable.
• 34:14
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's a minor.
• 34:16
SPEAKER_06: Just like it felt pedophilic in a way.
• 34:22
  SPEAKER_06: Interesting.
• 34:22
  SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
• 34:24
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 34:24
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 34:25
SPEAKER_03: If that's how you felt, I'm not going to dispute it.
• 34:29
SPEAKER_06: And then she got in the car and I was like, what are you doing?
• 34:32
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's strange, that's strange.
• 34:34
SPEAKER_03: That's not how I read it, but um I could see it.
• 34:37
SPEAKER_03: Um so let's talk a little bit about the murders in this movie.
• 34:44
  SPEAKER_03: Just a little bit.
• 34:45
SPEAKER_03: And for since we didn't really go through uh a lot of the movie, we have the parents who are dragged down the hall and splattered on the television at the beginning of the movie.
• 34:57
SPEAKER_03: There is the ostrich, womp womp, boring.
• 35:00
SPEAKER_03: And one of the best an I loved the ostrich animatronic.
• 35:03
SPEAKER_03: I thought it looked cool.
• 35:04
  SPEAKER_03: Bad, bad.
• 35:05
SPEAKER_03: I'm still upset about that.
• 35:06
SPEAKER_03: We had the incredible gorilla fight in the bathroom.
• 35:10
  SPEAKER_03: I loved that.
• 35:11
SPEAKER_03: We have a teen impaled by Night Night.
• 35:15
SPEAKER_03: We have the I thought the cutest of the teens, the one in the glasses.
• 35:19
SPEAKER_03: Oh, he was so adorable.
• 35:20
SPEAKER_03: He was mauled to death in the ball pit.
• 35:24
SPEAKER_03: Then Nicolas Cage killed the gladiator, whose name was Night Night.
• 35:28
SPEAKER_03: We had Bobby and Kathy um really going at it and then exploding on each other.
• 35:37
SPEAKER_03: We had the Gator being ripped open by the mouth.
• 35:41
SPEAKER_03: Liv's, I assume, boyfriend with the flowing locks of hair.
• 35:46
SPEAKER_03: He was like tongued to death by the chameleon.
• 35:50
  SPEAKER_03: Ugh.
• 35:51
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was pretty weak.
• 35:53
  SPEAKER_03: Why would you trust?
• 35:54
SPEAKER_03: Of all the animatronics, that chameleon looked the most disgusting.
• 35:58
  SPEAKER_03: Why would you trust?
• 36:00
  SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
• 36:02
SPEAKER_03: Uh, the deputy sheriff was killed by the turtle on the road, the um sheriff snapped in half by Willie himself, Willie being killed by Nicolas Cage, the fairy blowing up with Tex and whoever that auto repair man was, and then Nick and Liv running over the turtle.
• 36:29
SPEAKER_03: So what would you say?
• 36:30
SPEAKER_03: Out of all those murders, all of 'em, quite a pile up, I must say, uh, what is the most memorable murder of Willie's Wonderland?
• 36:43
SPEAKER_06: I want to say the couple having sex in the super fun happy room.
• 36:52
SPEAKER_06: But the actual murder of them like felt a little weak.
• 36:56
SPEAKER_06: I just loved that situation as a whole.
• 36:58
SPEAKER_06: I thought that was fun.
• 36:59
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 37:00
  SPEAKER_06: So the actual murder.
• 37:04
SPEAKER_06: Um, I have to say the sheriff being just like swiped in half because it really caught me off guard.
• 37:11
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was hilarious.
• 37:12
SPEAKER_03: That was like a deep blue sea moment.
• 37:14
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it it was just like a whoa.
• 37:16
SPEAKER_06: And also like pretty well executed.
• 37:19
  SPEAKER_06: Like it looked legit.
• 37:21
SPEAKER_03: Some budget went into that scene.
• 37:24
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
• 37:26
SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm going to say uh I'm going to backtrack on what you just said.
• 37:30
SPEAKER_03: I loved the sex murder scene.
• 37:33
SPEAKER_03: Now, I I will do the same caveat that uh Kathy, an absolute icon.
• 37:39
SPEAKER_03: Every line she delivered, I laughed out loud.
• 37:42
SPEAKER_03: Whether she wanted me to laugh out loud or not with that performance, hilarious, every word out of her mouth.
• 37:49
SPEAKER_03: And so why I think that her boyfriend Bobby spewing blood all over her was incredible for me.
• 37:57
  SPEAKER_03: I loved that.
• 37:58
SPEAKER_03: I felt just like Bobby spewing all over her when I saw that.
• 38:01
SPEAKER_03: Um, however, it was a huge, huge disservice uh to Kathy, the queen, and the icon, that we do not see her actually die.
• 38:14
  SPEAKER_03: That breaks my heart.
• 38:16
SPEAKER_03: But I am still going to select the sex scene as my most memorable.
• 38:20
  SPEAKER_05: Uh I I don't know about you.
• 38:22
SPEAKER_05: I mean, I know Parker, you're not a fan, but I would have to say the ostrich was was a pretty Ian.
• 38:30
SPEAKER_05: Now you're just out to get me.
• 38:33
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I feel like um I enjoyed it.
• 38:39
  SPEAKER_05: I enjoyed the meater.
• 38:41
SPEAKER_06: I thought I laughed out loud when they zoomed in on the ostrich taking that one step.
• 38:49
SPEAKER_06: Like they like had to make it clear that these animatronics were like free walking creatures.
• 38:57
SPEAKER_06: And also Nicolas Cage, I know you're hating on the ostrich a lot, but Nicolas Cage just like punch bagging or punching bag him multiple times.
• 39:11
  SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
• 39:11
SPEAKER_03: I just thought every other fight scene was so strong, especially the gorilla incredible.
• 39:18
SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, this wasn't this the death scene, but the crocodile or alligator in the air duct, that was hilarious to me.
• 39:27
  SPEAKER_03: I just I don't know.
• 39:28
SPEAKER_03: I thought there were so many memorable things in this movie that the ostrich just felt like such a toss uh uh throwaway to me.
• 39:37
  SPEAKER_06: He is creepy.
• 39:39
SPEAKER_05: It just reminds me of the squirty worm.
• 39:41
  SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
• 39:43
SPEAKER_03: Alright, well, we all have our opinions.
• 39:46
SPEAKER_03: Maybe I'll have to re-watch Willie's Wonderland to fully appreciate the ostrich death because now y'all have given me a little bit to chew on.
• 39:56
SPEAKER_03: Um, on a scary scale of one to five, where would you rank Willie's Wonderland?
• 40:04
  SPEAKER_05: One.
• 40:06
SPEAKER_06: Um, I'm gonna give it a two.
• 40:11
SPEAKER_06: I don't think it was like necessarily scary, but I don't know.
• 40:16
SPEAKER_06: I found myself like giggling a lot, just out of the ridiculousness.
• 40:21
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 40:21
SPEAKER_03: I'm going to agree with Ian and give it a one.
• 40:23
SPEAKER_03: I actually think this is a perfect movie to put on at a party.
• 40:27
SPEAKER_03: Or I know I say this a lot, but like if you're ever putting on a movie to like set the scene at like a gathering where people don't really need to watch it, but you can kind of key in and see something ridiculous, this is a perfect movie for that.
• 40:42
SPEAKER_03: And um, there's nothing in it that's like I don't know, there's some movies that you have to worry.
• 40:47
SPEAKER_03: Like, if I put this on at a party, are there going to be any like babies or uh scaredy cats who are going to get mad at me and make me turn it off?
• 40:56
SPEAKER_03: Willie's Wonderland du is grotesque sometimes, but nobody I think at a party is ever going to complain and ask you to turn it off.
• 41:03
SPEAKER_03: I think that it's in itself a vibe that could improve the party.
• 41:08
SPEAKER_03: You could even put on music over it and not have the volume on.
• 41:12
SPEAKER_06: How many parties do you go to where you just like have a scary movie on in the background?
• 41:17
SPEAKER_03: Actually none, but I was thinking watching this movie that I want to have some sort of like neon colored party just so I can put on Willie's Wonderland while it's happening.
• 41:28
SPEAKER_06: I know I mentioned the cleaning already once, but when they show his final product of how clean it is in there, I was just thinking like, I want to go.
• 41:40
  SPEAKER_03: That's what I was thinking.
• 41:40
SPEAKER_03: And they were like looking through the window and they were like, they're like, oh, like, how do you do this?
• 41:45
SPEAKER_03: And I was thinking like, oh shit, that place is spotless.
• 41:50
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 41:51
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 41:53
  SPEAKER_03: Alright.
• 41:54
SPEAKER_03: Well, the moment we've all been waiting for, would you give Willie's Wonderland a pinball smash or a slash?
• 42:05
  SPEAKER_03: Or a squirt.
• 42:07
SPEAKER_03: No, a squirt, if anything, is a good thing.
• 42:11
  SPEAKER_05: I'm giving it a slash.
• 42:14
  SPEAKER_05: It's not for me.
• 42:16
  SPEAKER_05: Nick Cage, I'm sorry.
• 42:18
SPEAKER_06: You know, this always happens to me where I am like Don't you dare.
• 42:24
