- 0:01He taught about the same river for 30 years.
- 0:03Then at retirement, he built a boat and got in it.
- 0:07There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:10Chandmer 1137 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:14yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:16you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:18This message is dedicated to Chip Phillips.
- 0:21Here's the upgrade. You may know the river by heart,
- 0:24but upgraded thinking knows that knowing the river and riding in
- 0:27it are two different lives. Here's the story.
- 0:31Chip Phillips spent his career as a high school English
- 0:34teacher. For decades, one of the books he
- 0:36taught was The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
- 0:38Mark Twain's story of a boy, a raft in the great Brown River
- 0:42running down the middle of the country.
- 0:45He taught the Mississippi. He diagrammed it on the board.
- 0:48He explained the pull of the current, the freedom of the
- 0:50raft, the meaning of the water. Year after year, class after
- 0:54class, he stood at the front of the room and talked about the
- 0:56river. And then he retired.
- 0:59Most people, when they finally put down the chalk, put down the
- 1:02dream with it. Chip did the opposite.
- 1:05He went out in his yard, and with his own hands he built a
- 1:08houseboat. He named her the Northern Sun.
- 1:12And one morning he pushed off from Hannibal, MO, Mark Twain's
- 1:15own hometown, and floated down the Mississippi.
- 1:19Not as a Lesson plan, not as a unit on symbolism, as a man
- 1:23finally living inside the thing you'd spent 30 years only
- 1:26pointing at. Chip knew everything about that
- 1:29water already. He'd read every chapter, taught
- 1:32every theme, answered every question a 16 year old could
- 1:35throw at him. Knowledge was never his problem.
- 1:38Getting in the boat was there's something that you've studied
- 1:41for years, some river you can describe better than almost
- 1:44anyone. You know the theory of the
- 1:47marriage you want, the business you'd start, the book you'd
- 1:49write, the life you'd keep sketching in your head.
- 1:52You've explained it to other people.
- 1:54You could teach a class on it. Stop teaching the river.
- 1:58Get in the boat. For Chip, his love for
- 2:00literature became his lived experience.
- 2:02What's the shift for you? The better story to tell
- 2:05yourself is I don't have to read about an adventure when I'm
- 2:08living it. Tell me a story of launching to
- 2:11from chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 2:15what's the boat you keep describing but never board.
