- Alex: Welcome to another edition of the Unsexy Podcast. Today we are doing episode eleven, check-in ten of Unsexy Coaching with Erin. I'll kick it over to Aaron. Aaron: Hello. So, all right, we are gonna just get right into it. What is your weight? Alex: one hundred sixty four point two Aaron: Nice, we're s we've holding steady. You know what that means? You know what that means, Alex, when it just stays the same and you're doing the same thing all the time? You know what that means? Alex: I'm I've been breached maintenance. Aaron: We have reached your maintenance. That's exactly what that means. Alex: Well, so what's crazy about that though, I've been thinking about this. So my resting metabolic rate it's probably because I'm walking a shit ton. Like cause my resting metabolic Aaron: Yes. Yes. Alex: rate was like eighteen hundred calories. And so I Aaron: Mm-hmm. Alex: assume it's just th all of those steps that I'm going is what's so true, yeah. Right. Aaron: All the steps and exercise that you're doing, because you're that's just your resting, right? So you're still getting after it at the gym. And so that's that's one of the things that I like to talk to about with with some people when they get like they're like, I'm not gaining any weight. Like, yes. Or or I'm not I'm not dropping weight, I'm staying the exact same way. I'm like, great news. You know exactly what your maintenance is then. And that's like one of the hardest things to kind of figure out. we're in September. I have to think about this. I don't even know if I'd want to increase yours because in all honesty, a cut, when you're trying to get like real cut for the for the beach, you would want to go beneath that by by about two hundred calories. So I don't even want to increase it because I don't need we don't need to start gaining weight before you go to Hawaii. look really fat. so that's something I I guess we'll we could talk about that. I mean, I guess we could talk about it right now. Are you Is it more important to you that you look really cut or that you look thicker? And not like fat, but just like bigger? Alex: Such a hard question. 'Cause like I don't mind like how I'm looking right now. So I don't I I wouldn't know how to answer that. Like Aaron: The thing is too, man, and this is why the DEXA scan is gonna really important, is you're clearly losing fat and you're not losing weight. That can only mean one thing: you're gaining muscle while you're losing fat. because it's been for the past four weeks, it's been within about a pound. So you've been 163.4 and then 164.4 or a little bit lower for the past four weeks. And so that's I mean, that's what that is. You're you're losing fat 'cause you ha we could see the before and after photos or the progression photos. and you're maintaining your weight. So you're not losing fat and muscle. If you're losing both, you'd start dropping quicker. Alex: Cause I think like a pipe dream for me is like the six pack. And when I say pipe dream, it's like it's not something I absolutely aspire to. But like so Aaron: Mm-hmm. Alex: and I think that's where most of the cut is going to go to two, 'cause I don't feel like belly fat's been coming off nearly I and we'll find out what the DEXA scan. Nearly as fast as like other fat or sorry, the belly has been Aaron: Yes. Alex: going a lot slower than all of the other fat areas. So That's probably what the target of a cut's going to primarily be at at this point. But anyways, I'm just like rambling right now. We're I'm I'm trying to think. I don't know, like probably I wanna be fur like I I think I'd rather be thicker, honestly, than like just like, all right, cool. Now I can see every single muscle. Cause I was looking at this guy. Let's see if I have it up really fast. So no one else, so anyone that's listening to this can't see it. No, I do not have it up right now. And they did like a 365 days like locked-in challenge. And the Aaron: Yeah. Alex: way the dude like looked at the end, I was like, I don't want to look like that. Like I don't want to look like a like a marathon runner. No offense to all the the marathon runners out there. That's not the body type I'm going for. Aaron: Yes, yes. Did did i in his did you watch the video or like see what his training actually was? Alex: No, no. So to be fair, like so like all of his muscles l like the you can see the muscles and you can see the definition. Six pack was looking was looking great but it was like you still you look Aaron: Yeah. Alex: small. Aaron: Yeah. Well, is I'd be curious to know what his actual routine was because maybe it was a ton of fucking cardio. And so that's Alex: Fair. Like running to Aaron: yeah, is a lot of running and that's all it was. So cool, you lost a bunch of fat and probably lost muscle along the way. Whereas you're doing a ton of resistance training, you're maintaining at the very minimum your muscle, but more than likely building muscle. Actually I know you're building muscle because your reps or your weight have been going up since the beginning. So yeah, that's that that would be the difference there. And that you did say the interesting thing. You said my belly is the th it's always the last thing to go. It it just is. For whatever reason, and that's why there's so a bajillion different things on how to how to target belly fat. First of all, you can't. It's just for whatever reason and in most people, not everyone, in most people, belly flat belly fat and like love handles are the last thing to go. And so that's that doesn't surprise me that you said that. And so in order to be able to do that, I would honestly, I would I would just keep you for now. I mean, I know you said it's not like the end goal is to have a six pack, but in order to get that is two things. It's doing a lot of ab work, like the hardwood like the those rope ones that I showed you, like just heavy, concentrated ab work, not bodyweight ones at all, to Alex: Not to brag, but I'm almost at the max, so I don't even like I guess I could put all my like the little half things for that. Just tons of rips. Aaron: Nope. Do you know enough to I've dude, I've been at the max for like eight months. No, like and no, the the because it just sucks. I know I just know exactly what you're talking about. So what I do is on those, so what we're talking about are the the crunches that you do, but you're using a rope and a cable machine, and you're essentially just on your knees and you're just crunching down and you're almost like looking whatever. So you're crunching down. So what I've started doing with those, Alex: Yeah. Marilyn Manson style. Aaron: we call them the Maryland Mansons. And then what I do is I I hold it for three seconds on each rep. So I go down, I hold it, and then I just go really slow on the way up. So a lot of times there's like one, two, Alex: Okay. Right. Aaron: three. I'm just like down, hold, and just slow and to keep it tight as you come up. And you almost like don't lose like full tension ever. And then just go right back. Dude, it's not easy. Alex: Those are my favorite ones of all like I don't like the roller. I actually stopped doing the roller and subbed it out just in case it was hurting my arm. And I d I hate Aaron: Sure, yeah. Good. Alex: leg lifts. I don't know what it is. Like I could do give me a thousand of the rope ab things you have me doing over leg lifts. Leg lifts I'm like 'cause I don't even know if I'm really feeling it. Sometimes, not all not always. no, not everyone, no. Aaron: Yeah. Yes. Does your back pop does your back pop when you do it? Mine always goes like grrr grrr grrr I'm Alex: So like, Aaron: just like Alex: my god, because like I'm up to not I'm like bragging, like I'm up to seventy. I'm like, can we make this this takes forever. This takes forever. Aaron: let me let me I'll solve you solve this for you. You add a dumbbell. So I hold like a 35 pound dumbbell just between my feet. And I just that's what I go up and do it that way. Because yeah, yeah, it'd be stupid, right? Just to do like a bajillion of them. that's actually why I stopped doing one of the there was like an actual ab machine at Gold's Gym and I had maxed it out and I could do like 40. And I was just like, I was like, why are these so easy? And then I like later I saw an old like a really old lady doing those and she didn't max it out but very close to maxing out and like was bumping them. I was like, they're not Alex: That's why. Aaron: they're not hard. I mean she was very good shape, not not shaming anybody. Good for her. I hope when I'm like 80 like her I can bust out those as easily as she is doing But yeah, that's when I was like, I can't I have graduated from this machine. I have to do something else. So it's I think for me it's about just making it harder. And I guess I could have made the machine harder by just constantly flexing the entire time Alex: Okay. Aaron: I'm doing it. But the the nice thing about the doing the lower ones is it gets your lower abs. So it gets this part and it kind of helps with that like I don't know what that's called. The whatever that like cut that cut like whatever I don't know, I should know I don't. you know yeah, yeah, whatever. Alex: What's the the Brad Pitt. Yeah. Yeah. Aaron: and so those those that the only reason I don't like doing the leg I do like because I do feel And you will feel them if you throw that. The other thing too is Alex: Start doing a wait. Aaron: I am also not keeping my legs straight when I do them. I have like a slight bend and I'm all I'm thinking about is like lifting my knees up. I'm not lif thinking about lifting up my feet to go parallel. I'm thinking about I you're on the the thing. I'm just thinking about getting my knees from from hanging down up to like parallel with my my stomach kind of a thing. So I that that helps too with like maybe engaging the core more. and then the weight obviously makes a giant difference too. so I I I Do like I do like those ones. Do you do the little side curl things? Little side crunches? Alex: I started doing those. Like that's the thing that I subbed the wheel out for. Aaron: Yeah, yeah. It cause the wheel does lower abs too. I mean it does full abs, but it like really concentrates on your lower abs. And then those those leg lifts really work your lower abs too. and so that's why you're just getting you're hitting everything really well. Well, we got off topic. how many workouts have you done, Alex? Alex: I th six. I think it was six this week. Basketball Aaron: Yeah. Alex: got canceled due to a funeral. Rest in peace, whoever it was. Sad day. Yeah. Rest in peace. Yeah. Aaron: Oof. they f they finally did it? That's the good. I mean, finally showed some respect to our aunt. how many macro days did you hit? Alex: Pretty bad week, I think four. And like the three da Aaron: God damn it, Alex. Alex: the three days I was pretty like pretty over. Aaron: What'd you eat? Alex: And under the protein. just if so Labor Day stuff. Burgers, p pizza and then thankfully there's chicken at the thing that we went to yesterday, but just a shiz ton of like creamy potatoes. They're delicious. Back on ch back on chicken and rice today. Aaron: So good. Good for you. How'd you get subject? I only ate chicken and broccoli. Alex: It Aaron: okay, Rock. The all right, Alex: Yeah. Aaron: average steps. Alex: Seventeen thousand. Aaron: Good lord. Yeah, that is that is Alex: Dude, what's crazy like I still I'm actually more confident that it is accuracy like I what it is, for anyone that's listening, it I actually from Fitwitch, which is like, you know, I'm just around like doing laundry, like I'm doing this. I'm like, just not sitting down will increase your step count significantly because Aaron: Yes. Alex: I also can't just stand in place. Like I can sit in place, but I can't stand in place. So you just start naturally Aaron: Yeah, me either. Alex: like moving, moving around. so like I'm Aaron: I have a I I have a YouTube video coming out that talks exactly about this. on Friday. Everyone that's listening, go check it out on Sexier in eighty four. but it literally talks about it. No, it's the it's it's this Friday. Last Friday's was sorry. yeah, yeah, yeah, it goes this goes out today, right? God, I don't I don't know our schedule. Alex: Previous Friday. Or is it is it next week? Okay, so go go check it out, it's live. Aaron: yes. Yeah, it is. The next one is the one that you should check out too is Should You Eat Before Working Out? Great video. Alex: I gave that a testaruski, like just to promote that video a little bit. I gave that a testaruski on Saturday. And like Friday, or maybe was yet No, it was yesterday. It was yesterday because we had a I ate a ton of food on Sunday. I'll tell you what. It was a really good workout and I didn't eat breakfast that morning. It really just cut like anyways, not to not to go listen to Aaron's go listen to Aaron's video on it. It's like hmm. Aaron: Yeah. I eat before. Alex didn't. We both feel that's the best way to do it. Watch the video and find out. good. Okay. So we are on week. All right, I gotta get to your notes section. Okay, wins and achievements. Alex: man, I really need to think about these. Winston achievements. I'll just go with I don't know, I'm actually like pretty happy. It's it's fun because like now I have the after picture that I'm just using for everything. Cause like what I was doing before when I post about this for everyone is I'd be like it would be a seven day before and after. So it's like, you look exactly the same. because you don't change significantly in like a seven Aaron: Yes. Yeah, yeah. Yes. Alex: day period. So changing it to have it be the before when like this actually started and then like and then like seeing Aaron: The first before, yes. Alex: the new one, I'm just like, you can May see major, major, major differences. And we were showing it to like Katie's parents were here and they're just like, how many days have Aaron: Yes. I was gonna ask you your tr Uh-huh. well look. Alex: you been doing this? I'm like, coming up on 70. Like, so really not that long, if you think about it. Like, it's pretty fast. Yes. Well, it's funny because I know Aaron: Like, look at this sexy boy. Like, I'm married. I'm married to your daughter. no. Alex: they talk to me about it because it's like it's something I'm going through right now. I was like, I don't think you guys actually care about this, but I I will I'll indulge you with the the information Aaron: Yes. Alex: about this. Aaron: Yes. Well, I was gonna ask you too, are your trap when you're in your last picture you post up, are you flexing your traps at all? Like you're going. Alex: A little bit in that one. I was doing I was trying to get a little bit more of the of the yeah, traps coming up. Yeah. Aaron: 'Cause it's they're they're popping. They they poppin'. so maybe your winning achievement should be your traps. Alex: Well, 'cause I what I try to do is like I'm doing about like a I would say like a seventy-five to eighty percent flex every time. 'Cause like I want people to like see I want people to see veins. I want people to like see like some of that those changes that have happened. But I also don't want to get 'cause in the before picture I'm I'm barely flexing. So I think it's kind of unfair to do like, all right, I'm full I'm full yoked mode right now. Aaron: Yes, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah. Alex: So that that's but either way, like just being able to see things where I'm like, I know I'm not flexing a ton and I can see the differences here, here, here. It's been good. So that was a win. Aaron: Sure. Yeah, because it's hard to it's really hard to flex your your your side, like your lower lower half of your side. so that's either there or it's not, and it is going away. any other wins and achievements besides traps poppin'? Alex: I think I said this on last week's episode, but it's feeling like there's like some exercises that are just like like my leg exercises are just like go exponentially going up. Like my chest exercises are like exponentially going up, even with like the hurt arm that I'm still like going through. I'm just like today I did chest and I was just like 70, 20 times, 19 times. and I was just like Aaron: That's really good. Alex: I was like was like I'm ready for seventy five, so this week I'll I'll hit seventy five and see if we can go on to eighty, 'cause it's just like no sense in doing eighteen. And and it's not like and it's just, you know, I'd like I I I I I actually should probably like try doing it slower first. 'Cause like I'm going my repetition rate, sorry, anyone who's not watching this, it's like down, up, down, up, down, up. And I think I need to go like down. Aaron: Yeah, it's just like like a three count on the way down. Yeah, a three count on the way down's good. Either way, I mean I mean that's a g the the nice thing about that is like when you're traveling. So there's like tips for people. Like you're traveling and Alex: Slower. Aaron: and it's like you don't have as heavy of weights, just go slower on the eccentric and the concentric and you're gonna get just as much activation. It's gonna take longer, which is the sucky part, but at least you're still being able to to grind it out at you know the shitty hotel you're at. or that we stay at. Alex: Other win, dude actually, there's just a bunch of wins this week. And this one's the Aaron: Yes. Alex: selfish asshole one. I was doing parallel, whatever they're called, shoulder flies, Aaron: Yeah, lateral raises. Alex: lateral raises. And I was doing them at the same time as the chick that I brought up multiple times who goes flails her arms like the entire time she's doing it. I'm doing it just that one. god, I'm loving it. I'm doing 10 pounds and it feels so good, just right Aaron: Yes. Yep. Alex: all the way, like everywhere. And just like going up nice and slow and like my my arm like my shirts like pulling up a little bit and like you're Aaron: Yeah. Alex: just seeing like crazy definition in the mirror. And like she's doing like her bird flap and one. I'm just like, mmm, and you Aaron: Yes. Alex: still got you still like you actually look like a bird with those wings on your arm, lady. So that felt that felt pretty good today. Just like, yeah, keep keep doing twenty-five pounds. It's doing a whole lot of good for you. I don't know why it pisses me off. I I don't know why Aaron: Maybe it's her cardio, man. That's just her cardio. Alex: I I don't like I literally it's one of those things where like she is I don't know why she is the person that I have targeted with like all of my vitriols. I'm just like stop like You're wasting your Aaron: I know. I know. Alex: time, dude. You're wasting your time. Like I'm just nice and slow with these 10 pounds. I'm like, you want that? Yeah, yeah, that's that's right. You're never gonna have that. You're never gonna have that. That would actually Aaron: Yeah. She's like, I'm eighty five years old, I have no testosterone. Alex: it'd actually be pretty funny if she like I think she's like early 40s, so maybe I should be a little bit kinder. Aaron: gotcha. Okay. Okay. yeah, that would be funny. Like, I thought you were 80. nice. All right. Alex: You look great. Aaron: I'm gonna put for wins is made old lady look stupid. Alex: Anger. Aaron: Perfect. I'll read this in like six months. Like, what the fuck was that? all right, struggles and or obstacles. Alex: Just food this week. Like I've been I Aaron: yeah. Yeah. Alex: was just doing a lot of f a lot of feeling eating and a lot of just this this weekend eating. Like we had the the wedding I ate a ton at too. So it's just like a bunch of stuff going on, that perfect storm of bad nutrition. But Aaron: You wanna know what's funny about that? Your weight was still the exact same. Which Alex: Right. Well yeah, right, right, right. Aaron: is a great thing to just point out to anyone listening. Alex like went off the rails for three days. Same weight. Same weight. Doesn't matter. Alex: Right. Well c it well that's what's like crazy too, because anytime so Katie's parents come over, they want to talk about like, so like what are you doing? So like diet and stuff, and so I was just like doing my classic like it's it's just diet and exercise, like it's just eating the right things. Pond off a bunch of peanuts to them because I can't eat those 'cause they're so cr incredibly high in fat. Yeah. And so I was Aaron: So caloric dense. Yes. Alex: just like, You should probably stop eating those peanuts, but thank you for taking them off our hands. Aaron: Yes. Yeah, you're welcome. Thanks. You can have You guys go get bigger. so food. Alex: Dude, it's I don't know, man. If everyone listening, like diet's actually even is probably the easiest thing to dial in. Aaron: It really is. It really, really, really is. Like I Alex: You do you do it in your home. You don't have to go anywhere. You're inside your home. Aaron: It in its like especially always to bring it back to me. it's it especially where I have to I swing so much. Like on my leg days, dude, I'm almost up at like four thousand calories and then like five hundred grams of carbs. And then today's a rest day. So I'm at like I think I'm at like twenty nine hundred calories and I will and it's not hard for me to go from that from like the four thousand to twenty nine, nine hundred. I'm just like, okay, that's fine. I just won't eat as much. And it just I don't know. It it's not it's I like to say it's not that hard, even though like aren't you the one that struggled with this for twenty something years? Yes. But I think once you've kind of locked it in, it's really it's so much easier to stay into stay into it. Alex: Dude, if you're counting, like it really if you're counting, you very quickly are like, crap. But it's it's really easy when you're not Aaron: Yes, yes. Alex: counting. If you're not counting, which Aaron: dude. Alex: we weren't doing when we were eating lots and lots of unhealthy food. Aaron: Yeah. Yes. Yes. And it whatever you think it is, you could probably almost double whatever you think it is. Like, it's probably like 2,500 calories, 3,000 calories. Yeah, it's probably like six grand of when you're just eating like crap. It's just so it's so easy to to go over. no, I think that's so besides just going off the rails and ruining your diet completely in three days, everything else was was fine. yeah. That's good. That's I mean, that's just another good lesson. Like you you you you had your fun and then you went right you got back on to what you're supposed to do. That's all it is. Alex: Then also t Once you start this is why like all of this works like with each other, right? Where if you stop the diet and stop exercising, you're gonna see that compounding negative effect way faster. If you're at least doing Aaron: Yes. Alex: one of the th one of the two things, you're gonna be okay for a while. Like I I bet you I could eat like crap. Like w like I ate this like past weekend, but I'm still working out every single day. And it probably Aaron: Mm-hmm. Alex: I'd probably start gaining weight, but it would be at a very slow at a very slow pace. So you at least have to have Aaron: Yeah. Yes, yes. Alex: one of those two things. You have to have one of those two things at all times. Ideal Aaron: Yep. Alex: to have both. Aaron: Yes. Yeah. Yeah. yeah. A hundred percent. A hundred percent. Well if you want to hit your actual goals, then yes, you want to have both. But that's a yeah, that's a really good point. yeah, I think I think think we're on a we're on a good a good track. So Alex: Awesome. Well, everybody, thanks for listening. We will see you all next week and go be unsexy.
