- 0:08Speaker 2: get started on She's on the Money podcast, I would
- 0:11Speaker 2: like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land of
- 0:14Speaker 2: which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country, acknowledging
- 0:18Speaker 2: the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming through
- 0:23Speaker 2: as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and
- 0:27Speaker 2: the storytelling of you to make a difference for today
- 0:31Speaker 2: and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money. She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money podcast for
- 1:00Speaker 4: millennials who want financial freedom. My name is beck Syed
- 1:03Speaker 4: and with me is Victoria Divine.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I Reckon.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Let's talk more about investments today.
- 1:09Speaker 1: V what do you think.
- 1:10Speaker 5: I'm very excited to have been given permission to do
- 1:14Speaker 5: more investing content as you know, Yes, my favor, I'm
- 1:17Speaker 5: ready for this.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm so excited.
- 1:18Speaker 5: I don't know if you are actually excited, but you
- 1:20Speaker 5: seem excited to be.
- 1:21Speaker 1: He've got a coffee. You're ready, But let's get into it.
- 1:25Speaker 4: I'm so ready, but as you know, I have like
- 1:28Speaker 4: no money. I kind of just got like a better
- 1:30Speaker 4: paying job, as you know.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But right now I.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Think saying I have no money, that's that's a fact.
- 1:35Speaker 5: That's like you don't have nothing, but yeah, when you
- 1:37Speaker 5: have opportunity. You have such an epic salary now and
- 1:41Speaker 5: I'm not going to share it on the pod.
- 1:42Speaker 4: But like she's doing well, you're doing he's doing well
- 1:45Speaker 4: for every Eventually I'll be doing well. I've got so
- 1:48Speaker 4: much back pay of like all these things that I
- 1:49Speaker 4: haven't paid for in years, like a service for my car.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Eventually I'll be doing well when I'm.
- 1:54Speaker 5: So sexy up. But just having the ability to pay
- 1:58Speaker 5: for things like that. I feel like this episode obviously
- 2:01Speaker 5: is investing. We're going to talk about investing on a
- 2:03Speaker 5: low income, which you would have seen when.
- 2:04Speaker 1: You clicked the title.
- 2:06Speaker 5: But I would hate for people to think that this
- 2:08Speaker 5: is going to be the priority over all of those
- 2:10Speaker 5: other important things. Like you know, we're not going to
- 2:12Speaker 5: talk about it too much, but I genuinely think we
- 2:14Speaker 5: should be setting up our financial foundations right like it's
- 2:18Speaker 5: making sure that your car is serviced and you are
- 2:20Speaker 5: safe on the roads, making sure you have an emergency
- 2:23Speaker 5: account and building that up because if anything does happen,
- 2:25Speaker 5: you've got something to fall back on. And if you've
- 2:28Speaker 5: always lived on a low income, that emergency fund is
- 2:31Speaker 5: going to feel like financial freedom wrapped up in a
- 2:33Speaker 5: little bundle. That makes you feel so empowered because you've
- 2:37Speaker 5: just never had that before. Yeah, Like you've just never
- 2:39Speaker 5: been in a situation where if something happens, you end
- 2:42Speaker 5: up in a circumstance where it's.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Like, oh well, actually, Beck, that's fine because you've got
- 2:45Speaker 1: savings for that.
- 2:47Speaker 5: Tot doesn't seem sexy. But I mean, that's not what
- 2:49Speaker 5: we're talking about today. But like I think we should
- 2:52Speaker 5: really address before we talk about this, This investing on
- 2:56Speaker 5: a low income comes after all the basics have been met,
- 2:59Speaker 5: and you know what, it's okay to not be able
- 3:01Speaker 5: to invest at this point in life. I do think
- 3:03Speaker 5: that this content is really about educating you so that
- 3:06Speaker 5: you have the best opportunities and you know what investing is.
- 3:09Speaker 5: But there are so many people in our community right
- 3:12Speaker 5: now who are struggling with the rising cost of living
- 3:14Speaker 5: or how much their mortgage is gone up, or how
- 3:16Speaker 5: much their rent has gone up, or just putting food
- 3:18Speaker 5: on the table, or they might be struggling with employment.
- 3:20Speaker 5: And I think that content like this, if not framed properly,
- 3:23Speaker 5: could make you feel really bad.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Because you go, oh my gosh, I listened to this
- 3:27Speaker 1: podcast and it.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Said that I had to be investing otherwise I'm not
- 3:31Speaker 5: doing the right thing financially.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:32Speaker 1: That's not true. No, that's not true at all.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Like, yeah, to create like long term financial security. In
- 3:39Speaker 5: a perfect world, everyone would have the ability to invest,
- 3:42Speaker 5: but our government's been doing us a dirty Beck, And
- 3:44Speaker 5: we're not all in that position. And I think that
- 3:47Speaker 5: as long as we're educating ourselves and know that we
- 3:50Speaker 5: have that opportunity, at some point might not be today.
- 3:53Speaker 5: And that's okay. I think we just need to understand
- 3:56Speaker 5: that because it's also not about judging.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And going, oh my gosh.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Well Victoria is talking to Beck and has a good
- 4:00Speaker 5: salary so she can doesn't have kids, so she doesn't
- 4:03Speaker 5: know what it's like. Sure, my experience is not your experience,
- 4:07Speaker 5: and that is totally okay, But we should be celebrating
- 4:10Speaker 5: the fact that we're all in a position where if
- 4:12Speaker 5: one of us is successful, we're all successful. Like a
- 4:15Speaker 5: rising kite is going to lift all ships and we
- 4:16Speaker 5: should all be educated on this.
- 4:18Speaker 1: That is beautiful.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It was.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Are we done? Like I can just leave now, Mic
- 4:22Speaker 1: drop go away.
- 4:24Speaker 4: No, it kind of feels like that, But I do
- 4:25Speaker 4: have some questions. That's okay, I'm ready. First of all,
- 4:29Speaker 4: is it even worth it to invest if you have
- 4:32Speaker 4: no money?
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah? Absolutely it is.
- 4:34Speaker 5: And I feel like for a lot of people, it's
- 4:36Speaker 5: going to be a foreign concept that we haven't tackled before.
- 4:39Speaker 5: I mean, Becky and I have spoken about it before.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Your parents wouldn't have taught you about investing because it
- 4:43Speaker 5: just wasn't something that was even on their radars. It
- 4:46Speaker 5: wasn't an option, it wasn't something that you were surrounded by.
- 4:49Speaker 5: So now you're kind of starting at base levels and
- 4:51Speaker 5: we're building up that financial literacy. So one day you're
- 4:54Speaker 5: going to go, oh, I'm doing this, and I cannot
- 4:56Speaker 5: wait for the day where you're like, yep, and I
- 4:58Speaker 5: own this ETF and doing this, and.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'm just gonna be like bare clok where you've come from, Like,
- 5:02Speaker 1: warn't that be wild dubbing it?
- 5:05Speaker 5: Not only are you investing, because like investing can be
- 5:07Speaker 5: really transactional, right, Like you could become an investor, and
- 5:10Speaker 5: I mean you are already because you've got superannuation.
- 5:13Speaker 1: But you could go download the.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Shares exapp and pop five bucks on an ETF or
- 5:17Speaker 5: in an ETF sorry, and go from there and that
- 5:19Speaker 5: would make you an immediate investor. But the important thing
- 5:22Speaker 5: to me is actually that you understand that you understand
- 5:25Speaker 5: the concept of investing. You understand what you've put your
- 5:27Speaker 5: money in and why you've put your money in there,
- 5:29Speaker 5: and you understand what potential dividends and yield that's going
- 5:32Speaker 5: to have, and that doesn't come overnight. But at the
- 5:34Speaker 5: end of the day, the question you're asking is Victoria
- 5:37Speaker 5: is at worth investing small amounts of money? And the
- 5:40Speaker 5: answer is unequivocally yes. And there's a few reasons for this.
- 5:44Speaker 5: So investing small amounts of money sets you up for
- 5:47Speaker 5: the best possible financial security and financial success long term.
- 5:51Speaker 5: It's not going to be a secret that five bucks
- 5:54Speaker 5: every single month is not going to create a secure retirement, right,
- 5:58Speaker 5: But you know what it does do educates you on
- 6:00Speaker 5: the process. It puts you in control of having a
- 6:03Speaker 5: platform that you know has that power behind it. It
- 6:07Speaker 5: means that that platform already exists, should you come into
- 6:10Speaker 5: some extra money that you do want to invest, you
- 6:12Speaker 5: know how to invest it and what that means. It
- 6:14Speaker 5: puts you in a position of power where every single
- 6:17Speaker 5: time your income increases, instead of falling victim to lifestyle
- 6:21Speaker 5: creep and being like, oh my gosh, I just don't
- 6:23Speaker 5: know where all my money is going back, you can
- 6:25Speaker 5: go all right, well, actually I've gotten a pay rise.
- 6:28Speaker 5: I'm going to contribute this to my pre existing portfolio,
- 6:30Speaker 5: and there's not a lot of thought about it. It
- 6:33Speaker 5: puts you in the position where you are not only
- 6:36Speaker 5: educated on the topic, but you've walked to the walk.
- 6:38Speaker 5: You know exactly what it means and how it works
- 6:41Speaker 5: and how it makes you feel. You know, oh my gosh,
- 6:43Speaker 5: I've been in this particular ETF. But I've now changed
- 6:46Speaker 5: my mind and I want something a bit more ethical
- 6:48Speaker 5: because my values aligned differently, and like, that's a really
- 6:51Speaker 5: cool position to be in. I want you to and
- 6:54Speaker 5: perfectly on a lower income, because like, the less you're investing,
- 6:57Speaker 5: the less risk there is.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Right.
- 7:00Speaker 5: I want you to see the ebbs and flows of
- 7:01Speaker 5: the market. I want you to log into your account
- 7:03Speaker 5: sometimes and see that it's a bit off and go.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Oh, I don't really like that.
- 7:07Speaker 5: I've never logged into my account even when I was
- 7:09Speaker 5: a financial advisor and thought, oh, it's off. I love that,
- 7:13Speaker 5: Like it makes me feel a little bit sick.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, have I done the wrong things?
- 7:16Speaker 5: Like where you log in, if you see you have less,
- 7:19Speaker 5: you are automatically going to feel that that's negative. Right,
- 7:22Speaker 5: But then when I stay invested over the long term,
- 7:24Speaker 5: that increases again and it builds itself back up. I
- 7:27Speaker 5: want you to have that experience before we get to
- 7:30Speaker 5: the big dollar amounts, right. I want you to be
- 7:32Speaker 5: okay with investing five bucks and then going all right, well,
- 7:35Speaker 5: I mean it's down four dollars this week, that's kind
- 7:38Speaker 5: of okay, that's all right because it's not four thousand
- 7:41Speaker 5: dollars instead of five thousand dollars.
- 7:43Speaker 1: You know, if I can.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Teach you with the small amounts the big amount it's
- 7:46Speaker 5: not going to be stressful, like you're setting yourself up
- 7:49Speaker 5: for future success and at the end of the day,
- 7:52Speaker 5: like it does financially benefit you. So if you're investing
- 7:56Speaker 5: over a ten year period with an average rate of
- 7:58Speaker 5: return of six percent, which is really low because we
- 8:01Speaker 5: know the average rate of return of the Australian share
- 8:03Speaker 5: market over the last thirty years has been nine point
- 8:06Speaker 5: eight percent. Right, I've just gone with six because we're
- 8:08Speaker 5: pretty conservative in this house. If you're investing twenty five
- 8:11Speaker 5: bucks a month, which I think is for a lot
- 8:14Speaker 5: of people start point because they just go, all right, well,
- 8:17Speaker 5: I can't afford a whole heap, but I want not
- 8:19Speaker 5: five dollars and I don't want ten.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I want maybe twenty five.
- 8:22Speaker 5: I feel like that feels comfortable, comfortable, It feels comfortable.
- 8:25Speaker 5: If you had saved twenty five dollars each and every
- 8:28Speaker 5: single month for ten years, you'd have three thousand dollars.
- 8:31Speaker 5: But if you had invested it with an average rate
- 8:34Speaker 5: of return of six percent, you'd have four thousand and
- 8:36Speaker 5: ninety seven dollars. Oh wow, that's one thousand and ninety
- 8:39Speaker 5: seven dollars more than you wouldn't have had before. Right,
- 8:42Speaker 5: Like from little things, big things really do grow. And
- 8:45Speaker 5: I mean the power of compounding happens one with the
- 8:49Speaker 5: scale of what you're investing, but two with time. So
- 8:51Speaker 5: if you went from ten years to twenty years, that
- 8:53Speaker 5: would probably double again. Because money on average based on
- 8:58Speaker 5: the rule of seventy two, which is a finance concept
- 9:01Speaker 5: that basically says that money doubles. Let's call it every
- 9:04Speaker 5: ten years, that in another ten years from now, that
- 9:06Speaker 5: one thousand's going to be worth two thousand, and then
- 9:09Speaker 5: in another ten years that two thousand is going to
- 9:11Speaker 5: be worth four thousand, and then in another ten years
- 9:13Speaker 5: that four thousand's worth eight thousand. So the power of
- 9:16Speaker 5: compounding is actually in time. But hypothetically, if you were
- 9:19Speaker 5: investing fifty bucks a month, if you'd saved that, that
- 9:22Speaker 5: would be double what you were doing with twenty five,
- 9:24Speaker 5: So that'd be six grand, But if you invested it,
- 9:27Speaker 5: it'd be eight thousand, one hundred and ninety four dollars.
- 9:29Speaker 5: That's a difference of just over two grand.
- 9:32Speaker 1: That's sick, pretty sweet, that's sick.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Like So I feel like we really need to normalize
- 9:38Speaker 5: investing small amounts because I think so many times, and
- 9:41Speaker 5: you guys would have heard me on the pod before
- 9:42Speaker 5: being like, oh, well, if you invest five hundred dollars
- 9:44Speaker 5: a month, I use that as a good example to
- 9:47Speaker 5: educate you. Not because I immediately think everyone can afford
- 9:50Speaker 5: five hundred bucks a month, No way, like.
- 9:52Speaker 1: In this economy.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Not in this economy, this economy you're dreaming exactly, you're dreaming.
- 9:57Speaker 5: And I feel like, if you are investing five hundred
- 10:00Speaker 5: dollars a month, that's awesome, congrats on the privilege, that's
- 10:04Speaker 5: absolutely fantastic. If you're doing more than that, like get
- 10:07Speaker 5: it clean, I'm so excited for you. But I also
- 10:09Speaker 5: wouldn't want people in our community feeling awful because they're
- 10:13Speaker 5: not achieving the goals that other people are achieving. I've
- 10:15Speaker 5: talked about it so many times. You're all on different trajectories,
- 10:18Speaker 5: you are all on different journeys, we're all at different
- 10:21Speaker 5: stages in those journeys. Yes, and I would hate for
- 10:24Speaker 5: you to go, oh my gosh, well, if I'm not
- 10:25Speaker 5: investing five hundred dollars a month, because that's Victoria's like
- 10:28Speaker 5: go to example, that means it's not good enough.
- 10:31Speaker 1: No, it's just a really sexy number. To be honest,
- 10:34Speaker 1: it is.
- 10:34Speaker 4: It's nice, like.
- 10:35Speaker 1: It's a clean it's a round number.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Yeah, and it compounds over time, you know, at the
- 10:40Speaker 5: end of the day. I've used this example. But if
- 10:42Speaker 5: you were twenty one and you started investing over the
- 10:45Speaker 5: long term, and you invested five hundred dollars each and
- 10:48Speaker 5: every single month, all the way through to retirement. If
- 10:51Speaker 5: you had saved, that would be two hundred and forty
- 10:53Speaker 5: thousand dollars that you'd saved. But if you'd invested, that
- 10:57Speaker 5: would be more than one point two million dollars. That's
- 11:00Speaker 5: sexy money, but a fairy nice. That example makes you go, aw,
- 11:05Speaker 5: that's a bit more powerful than just talking about this. Oh,
- 11:08Speaker 5: if I invest twenty five dollars. It's not to say
- 11:10Speaker 5: the twenty five dollars isn't powerful. It's so powerful, I
- 11:13Speaker 5: promise you. But beck the word a million, Like the
- 11:17Speaker 5: second you tip over that, you go, I'm capable of that.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you are. You absolutely are capable of that.
- 11:24Speaker 5: And a lot of us who are in full time
- 11:25Speaker 5: employment are actually contributing about that or just over towards superannuation.
- 11:31Speaker 5: So you're already doing it. And that's why I care
- 11:34Speaker 5: so much about you guys checking up on your super
- 11:37Speaker 5: and making sure that your super's doing the right thing,
- 11:39Speaker 5: because if it's not invested properly, you know, short changing
- 11:42Speaker 5: yourself for about a million dollars.
- 11:44Speaker 4: It's a lot of dollars, a lot of dollars that
- 11:48Speaker 4: you could be short changing yourself.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, one out of ten cannot recommend short changing yourself,
- 11:52Speaker 5: terrible idea.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Do you just want to mention for anyone listening and
- 11:55Speaker 4: maybe isn't familiar with those catch words like EFT dividends,
- 11:59Speaker 4: we did coming?
- 12:00Speaker 1: Do you mean ETF?
- 12:02Speaker 5: But that's okay, I mean I feel like that that's
- 12:05Speaker 5: really relatable an exchange traded fund.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Yes, but we did do an episode.
- 12:10Speaker 5: We did, and we've covered those and I feel like
- 12:13Speaker 5: this is one of those things where I'm not trying
- 12:15Speaker 5: to confuse you. I feel like there have been a
- 12:17Speaker 5: lot of media who com middle aged white men who
- 12:19Speaker 5: historically have used a lot of acronyms to scare us
- 12:23Speaker 5: out of the market and make themselves feel smarter than
- 12:25Speaker 5: they actually are.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Like how flippant You're at brunch and you're.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Like, look over to the table beside you, and there's
- 12:30Speaker 5: guys and they're sitting there at brunch on Saturday morning
- 12:32Speaker 5: wearing suits, and you're like, I don't know what you
- 12:34Speaker 5: think you are. And I invested in this etof and
- 12:36Speaker 5: I do this and I get this yield, Like you've
- 12:39Speaker 5: seen them at brunch before, Like they're just like investing
- 12:43Speaker 5: bros who think they're really smart and usually you're like
- 12:47Speaker 5: eavesdrop on the conversation if you're me, because like I
- 12:49Speaker 5: can't eggs drop, right, you eavesdrop on the conversation.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Then they start talking about like big queen and stuff,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and you're just like, you've got no idea.
- 12:56Speaker 4: If they are no idea, if they ask me a question,
- 12:58Speaker 4: I will cry on this. I'll not have any idea.
- 13:01Speaker 5: ETF is actually quite and I won't say it's simple
- 13:05Speaker 5: because it's not. It's actually quite complicated. But for you
- 13:07Speaker 5: to understand it is quite simple. ETF is an exchange
- 13:10Speaker 5: traded fund, which sounds complicated, but essentially it's a basket
- 13:14Speaker 5: of shares. So if you buy that instead of a
- 13:16Speaker 5: direct share, you're getting instant diversification, and diversification is meaning
- 13:21Speaker 5: that you're just not putting all your eggs in one basket.
- 13:23Speaker 5: You're getting lots of different companies that somebody.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Else has picked.
- 13:26Speaker 5: You might feel a bit more secure with that decision,
- 13:29Speaker 5: and it just is kind of like a list of
- 13:31Speaker 5: different investments that are going to be way more affordable
- 13:34Speaker 5: to purchase because you're just buying fractions of that share
- 13:37Speaker 5: as opposed to going in and buying, you know, a
- 13:40Speaker 5: whole BHP share or a whole A and Z share,
- 13:42Speaker 5: Like I couldn't afford to own every single thing in
- 13:45Speaker 5: an ETF outright, but if I put my money into
- 13:48Speaker 5: that ETF, I could.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Have exposure to all those things immediately. Yes, that's a
- 13:52Speaker 1: good thing. That's really sexy.
- 13:54Speaker 5: And if you are somebody who is interested in the
- 13:56Speaker 5: share market and you're like, oh my gosh, I want
- 13:58Speaker 5: to invest five bucks a month fee, maybe have a
- 14:01Speaker 5: look in an ETF. Maybe have a look at something
- 14:03Speaker 5: that gives you the exposure to a particular asset class
- 14:07Speaker 5: or gives you exposure to a particular market, because I
- 14:10Speaker 5: mean you could go to the ASX two hundred, which
- 14:12Speaker 5: is the Australian share market's top two hundred companies. That
- 14:16Speaker 5: seems pretty simple. Yeah, if you don't want your investment
- 14:19Speaker 5: journey to be complicated, it doesn't have to be. I
- 14:23Speaker 5: think so many times we give ourselves analysis paralysis, right,
- 14:27Speaker 5: Like I need to make the right investment decision. We
- 14:29Speaker 5: can change it later, babe, Like it doesn't matter. Just
- 14:32Speaker 5: get your feet into the water, because it starts getting
- 14:35Speaker 5: a little bit more comfortable the longer your feeder in.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Right, totally, just jam that foot in the door.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Baby, please do like, don't probably don't jam your foot
- 14:43Speaker 5: in the don't jet up with a bruise, but like,
- 14:44Speaker 5: dip your tooes into the water.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I promise the pools real warm and we're having a party.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Yeah that sounds like so much fun.
- 14:51Speaker 5: It's way more fun than what investment actually is. So
- 14:54Speaker 5: I'm lulling you into this false sense of security so.
- 14:57Speaker 1: That you all benefits.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it's I'm the cool mom.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I'm not a regular mom. I'm a cool investment mark.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I feel that. I feel that now VI, I heard
- 15:07Speaker 4: you mention the term dollar cost averaging.
- 15:09Speaker 5: I have thrown that around a few times historically, and like,
- 15:12Speaker 5: to be fair, I'm going to be honest with you.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I kind of just smiled and nodded, but I actually
- 15:16Speaker 4: have no idea what okay?
- 15:18Speaker 5: So that means you're giving yourself exposure to the market
- 15:21Speaker 5: a lots of different points. So say you have twelve
- 15:23Speaker 5: hundred dollars to invest, right, You're like, I really want
- 15:25Speaker 5: to invest twelve hundred dollars and you've got it in
- 15:27Speaker 5: your savings account. How do you know that today is
- 15:30Speaker 5: a good day to enter.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The share market?
- 15:32Speaker 5: I don't know that you don't know that I could
- 15:34Speaker 5: look at the historical performance and be like, okay, cool.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Based on history, maybe today is a good day. But
- 15:41Speaker 5: as a very good ex financial advisor beck, past performance
- 15:45Speaker 5: is not indicative of future performance.
- 15:47Speaker 1: And we know that that is true.
- 15:49Speaker 5: But what we can do, because unfortunately, timing the market
- 15:53Speaker 5: isn't a thing unless you're Warren Buffett and you somehow
- 15:56Speaker 5: have this insane ability to vest really well. The average
- 16:01Speaker 5: person doesn't have that. So the next best thing we
- 16:04Speaker 5: can do to timing the market is have time in
- 16:06Speaker 5: the market. And so when we have time in the market,
- 16:09Speaker 5: that means instead of dumping that twelve hundred bucks in
- 16:12Speaker 5: in all one lump, you might choose to put one
- 16:14Speaker 5: hundred dollars in each and every single month. And that
- 16:17Speaker 5: means if you, you know, bought ten shares that are
- 16:20Speaker 5: worth ten dollars this month, well next month they actually
- 16:25Speaker 5: might have gone down a little bit, and so you
- 16:27Speaker 5: have the same ten dollars to invest. But you know,
- 16:29Speaker 5: let's be dramatic, the share market's dropped by fifty percent.
- 16:32Speaker 5: So instead of buying ten shares for ten dollars, you're
- 16:36Speaker 5: now able to buy twenty shares for ten dollars. So
- 16:39Speaker 5: you've increased how many shares you have with the same
- 16:42Speaker 5: amount of money that you're investing, right, And then we
- 16:45Speaker 5: extrapolate that out, and then maybe the month after that,
- 16:48Speaker 5: the share market's up and you go, okay, cool, well
- 16:51Speaker 5: now it's up fifty percent. Because we're just using averages
- 16:54Speaker 5: and like being dramatic about our example here because I
- 16:56Speaker 5: think it makes the most sense. Share market's up fifty percent.
- 16:59Speaker 5: So now you can only buy five shares instead of
- 17:02Speaker 5: the ten shares that you originally got for ten dollars.
- 17:04Speaker 5: So one month you bought ten shares, another month you
- 17:07Speaker 5: were able to buy twenty shares. A month after that
- 17:09Speaker 5: you're only able to buy five shares.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But you put the.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Same amount of money in every month, right, right. But
- 17:16Speaker 5: that means that if we averaged it out, like let's
- 17:18Speaker 5: say over twelve months, the average kind of becomes a
- 17:22Speaker 5: lower price point than what the higher of the market
- 17:24Speaker 5: is and what the lower of the market is.
- 17:26Speaker 1: So we only end up.
- 17:27Speaker 5: On average paying the average amount that the share market
- 17:31Speaker 5: is worth. Because as I said before, first month, we
- 17:34Speaker 5: paid the average. Second month, we kind of were onto
- 17:37Speaker 5: a winner because the share market was a bit down,
- 17:39Speaker 5: so we made more of the money that we invested
- 17:41Speaker 5: the month after that share market was up, but we
- 17:44Speaker 5: still invested because you don't know if it's going to
- 17:46Speaker 5: go up any higher than that, and that's still a
- 17:48Speaker 5: good opportunity. You don't know if the month after it's
- 17:51Speaker 5: going to go down. But over time, the market ebbs
- 17:54Speaker 5: and flows, and what that means is we end up
- 17:57Speaker 5: with an average line that gets drawn between the ebbs
- 17:59Speaker 5: and flour and that's what we end up paying. So
- 18:02Speaker 5: if we extrapolated that out, instead of paying one dollar
- 18:05Speaker 5: for each share, which you were doing at the start,
- 18:07Speaker 5: if we averaged that out, you're actually paying seventy five
- 18:10Speaker 5: cents per share in the example I've given. Because sometimes
- 18:13Speaker 5: you're paying more, sometimes you're paying less. But by consistently
- 18:17Speaker 5: being in the market, we've saved ourself money. And that
- 18:20Speaker 5: means that we're not trying to time the market, because
- 18:23Speaker 5: no one can do that.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I've said before on this podcast.
- 18:25Speaker 5: If I could have timed the market, I have the
- 18:28Speaker 5: knowledge I used to be an investment specific financial advisor,
- 18:33Speaker 5: like I would work with people worth tens of millions
- 18:36Speaker 5: of dollars. And that's not a flex that's just me
- 18:38Speaker 5: saying I had that experience and I still couldn't time
- 18:41Speaker 5: the market, so I don't mean to have too many tickets,
- 18:44Speaker 5: but I don't know how other people are thinking that
- 18:46Speaker 5: they can time the market when I was in such
- 18:49Speaker 5: a privileged position, like I had access to clients with
- 18:52Speaker 5: heaps of money, I had access to the best brokers
- 18:55Speaker 5: in the country because people with lots of money can
- 18:57Speaker 5: afford the best brokers. I had access to the best
- 19:00Speaker 5: investment houses in the country, and those investment houses so
- 19:04Speaker 5: they're basically people who do a whole heap of.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Research on the markets.
- 19:07Speaker 5: And when you get to a level of financial advice
- 19:10Speaker 5: where your clients have heaps of money, you can pay
- 19:13Speaker 5: a lot for the research. And I love that because
- 19:15Speaker 5: I'm super interested in it. But even with all of
- 19:17Speaker 5: those resources accessible to me, still can't time the market.
- 19:21Speaker 5: So I don't know how the average bro at brunch,
- 19:24Speaker 5: she's like, oh, yeah, the market's going to be done.
- 19:26Speaker 5: It's going to be a sick thing to buy next week. Mate,
- 19:29Speaker 5: you don't know anything. Sit down, drink your oatmeal claste
- 19:33Speaker 5: that you asked for to be a little bit extra
- 19:36Speaker 5: week because you had a big night last night. Like
- 19:38Speaker 5: I'm done with you. Like no one can time the market.
- 19:41Speaker 5: End of story. That's the wrap on this part of
- 19:43Speaker 5: the conversation. That's why dollar cost averaging is important, Beck,
- 19:46Speaker 5: and that's why we want to consistently invest instead of
- 19:49Speaker 5: thinking that we can time the market and put our
- 19:51Speaker 5: twelve hundred bucks in immediately.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Mike, does that make sense?
- 19:55Speaker 4: That makes so much sense?
- 19:57Speaker 1: I hate saying does that make sense? As well?
- 19:59Speaker 5: Because I feel like I'm it's something that's like, we
- 20:01Speaker 5: need to drop that out of our vocabulary. Actually, I
- 20:05Speaker 5: was talking to a friend about this the other day,
- 20:07Speaker 5: complete sidetrack like saying, Oh, I'm just a podcaster, or
- 20:11Speaker 5: I'm just you know, a videographer, right, Like you're not.
- 20:14Speaker 5: You are a videographer and you're a good one. Like
- 20:16Speaker 5: downplays our ability to communicate efficiently or to even stand
- 20:21Speaker 5: our own ground.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 20:23Speaker 5: I feel like I say so many times, oh my gosh,
- 20:26Speaker 5: does that make sense? Beck, as though I didn't know
- 20:29Speaker 5: what I was talking about?
- 20:30Speaker 1: Like, oh, Beck, did my example make sense? I knew
- 20:32Speaker 1: I made sense.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Why am I saying that, yes, you did make sense?
- 20:35Speaker 4: I guess a better way because you don't know if
- 20:37Speaker 4: I've fully absorbed the true is maybe to be like,
- 20:40Speaker 4: do you have any questions. You absorb that, silly girl, mean,
- 20:46Speaker 4: we're not doing that at all. What's your next question.
- 20:49Speaker 5: I'll try and answer it in the most educated way possible.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I do have more questions for but I reckon, let's
- 20:55Speaker 4: take a quick five seconds too.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Because we're spoiled.
- 20:59Speaker 5: At the other day, I had a whole heap of
- 21:01Speaker 5: DMS from people being like, what do you mean you
- 21:02Speaker 5: didn't get a cup of tea.
- 21:03Speaker 1: I'm like, no, it's a fake break.
- 21:05Speaker 5: So we're going to take an out of fake break
- 21:06Speaker 5: and we will pay the bills with the advertisement that
- 21:09Speaker 5: you hear, and we'll see you on the flip side.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Love you, love you.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Hi everyone, we are back from our fake break.
- 21:18Speaker 1: No, it was a real break. I do actually have
- 21:20Speaker 1: a coffee now you do.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Actually that one was real. But generally, don't be fooled.
- 21:25Speaker 1: They are. We can be lazy. We can be like lazy.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Now we are talking about investing on Alo you come today.
- 21:32Speaker 4: So we've talked before on the pod about different levels
- 21:34Speaker 4: of investing and different available platforms. Run us through this
- 21:38Speaker 4: again and where to start. This is a big conversation.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Aren't you ready to sit down? Ready to drap yourself
- 21:44Speaker 4: in maybe you should have got a coffee as well.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Damn.
- 21:46Speaker 5: So last year we did an episode. It was on
- 21:49Speaker 5: the fourth of May, so if you want to go
- 21:51Speaker 5: listen to that. It was comparing the different types of
- 21:53Speaker 5: investment platforms that exist here in Australia, because not all
- 21:56Speaker 5: investment platforms have been created equally. And I kind of
- 21:59Speaker 5: framed that different levels of investing kind of in context
- 22:02Speaker 5: of like primary school, high school, university, except we kind
- 22:05Speaker 5: of called it entry level and then like advanced investing,
- 22:08Speaker 5: and like I wanted people to understand that from my perspective,
- 22:12Speaker 5: not that this like legitimately exists, Like people don't go, oh,
- 22:16Speaker 5: we have a basic platform, well we have a super
- 22:18Speaker 5: advanced one, Like I wanted you guys to understand, I guess,
- 22:22Speaker 5: from my perspective as an ex financial advisor, the entry
- 22:25Speaker 5: points and what the different entry points look like. Because
- 22:28Speaker 5: from what I deemed to be an entry level platform,
- 22:32Speaker 5: I said, look, I reckon micro investing platforms where you're
- 22:35Speaker 5: depositing minimal amounts of money, like you're able to invest
- 22:38Speaker 5: like one cent or a dollar or something small, is
- 22:41Speaker 5: probably where at a beginner level is at. Obviously, when
- 22:45Speaker 5: it comes to micro investing. That is different than a
- 22:48Speaker 5: direct share platform, where you're able to go and pick
- 22:51Speaker 5: the actual share. A micro investing platform, while you might
- 22:54Speaker 5: be able to pick your risk profile, you don't have
- 22:57Speaker 5: any control over the actual investment. Meant options that are
- 23:01Speaker 5: available to you. You can pick, oh, I'm a conservative
- 23:04Speaker 5: or an aggressive investor, or you might even be an
- 23:07Speaker 5: ethically conscious investor. But what's in that profile is just
- 23:11Speaker 5: the set by the platform, and it's not actually controllable
- 23:14Speaker 5: by you. And obviously it's going to depend which micro
- 23:17Speaker 5: investing platform you choose, but like lots of them actually
- 23:20Speaker 5: now have the ability to round up your spare change,
- 23:23Speaker 5: which is kind of cool if you're not a massive
- 23:25Speaker 5: investor and kind of want to dip your toes in
- 23:28Speaker 5: the water. But you also don't know what to spend
- 23:29Speaker 5: each month and you know that your oat latte is
- 23:32Speaker 5: going to cost. Get this, I paid five dollars fifty
- 23:34Speaker 5: for an oat latte the other day. Where was that gross?
- 23:37Speaker 5: I'm not going to tell because last time I ended
- 23:39Speaker 5: up creating a daily mail drawer and coffee gate Heaven,
- 23:42Speaker 5: so we're not going to talk about that. But I
- 23:45Speaker 5: paid five dollars fifty for a Latte, and I still
- 23:47Speaker 5: do play with micro investing platforms because I just find
- 23:50Speaker 5: them interesting and I kind of because I exist in
- 23:52Speaker 5: this sphere of cheese on the money, I kind of
- 23:54Speaker 5: like knowing what's going on. Like if you guys are
- 23:56Speaker 5: talking in a Facebook group about a particular investment platform,
- 23:58Speaker 5: I'm going to be like, yeah, I understand and exactly
- 24:00Speaker 5: what they're talking about because I have personal experience with
- 24:02Speaker 5: this because I put fifty cents there. But essentially, if
- 24:05Speaker 5: you round up your purchases, that five dollars fifty late
- 24:09Speaker 5: goes up to six dollars to the nearest dollar and
- 24:11Speaker 5: invest fifty cents on your behalf, which is kind of
- 24:14Speaker 5: cool to know that every single platform is kind of
- 24:16Speaker 5: like looking after you. But then you step up right
- 24:19Speaker 5: and the next was intermediate level. We're talking about DIY
- 24:22Speaker 5: investment platforms, but some of them give you the ability
- 24:26Speaker 5: to invest with azulla as one cent, So like our
- 24:29Speaker 5: friends from Charesas, we talk about them quite often because
- 24:31Speaker 5: we work with them quite closely. Use the code so
- 24:34Speaker 5: SotM for a free ten dollars when you sign up,
- 24:37Speaker 5: which I just think is a really good money in
- 24:38Speaker 5: I don't make any money off that code by the
- 24:40Speaker 5: way we talk to them, And I want to say
- 24:42Speaker 5: that clearly because I don't want people to think, like, oh,
- 24:44Speaker 5: she's using a referral code that means she'll get ten bucks. Sure, No,
- 24:48Speaker 5: we talked about it. It could be five dollars each.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Or I could have given you guys ten bucks to
- 24:52Speaker 5: sign up, and I'd prefer you guys to have ten
- 24:55Speaker 5: bucks to sign up, because I don't want you to
- 24:57Speaker 5: think that I'm recommending something because I'm being paid.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Does that make sense?
- 25:00Speaker 5: Like I only work with brands that I genuinely know,
- 25:03Speaker 5: trust and think are going to put you in a
- 25:05Speaker 5: good position. Right anyway, Sidetrack you can invest with them
- 25:08Speaker 5: for as little as one cent, whereas if you went
- 25:10Speaker 5: over to another platform that's quite popular in our community,
- 25:13Speaker 5: self Wealth, you need a minimum of five hundred dollars
- 25:16Speaker 5: to enter that platform and start investing, which is fine
- 25:20Speaker 5: because if that's what your progative is, that's what your
- 25:23Speaker 5: prerogative is. But they have different bells and whistles that
- 25:26Speaker 5: Shareszy's might not have, So like Chasey's gives you like
- 25:29Speaker 5: base level of information it's really digestible, whereas self Wealth
- 25:33Speaker 5: it actually is far more technical, and it gives you
- 25:36Speaker 5: like insights and guidance and like reports on each company.
- 25:40Speaker 1: It's going to be a bit more deep.
- 25:42Speaker 5: Some people want that, Some people get analysis paralysis when
- 25:45Speaker 5: they go on a platform like that, but I think
- 25:47Speaker 5: we deserve to have the transparency of understanding where it is. Anyway,
- 25:51Speaker 5: go listen to that episode because I won't, you know,
- 25:53Speaker 5: redo the whole episode here. And I think that that
- 25:55Speaker 5: could be quite powerful for you to understand because there's
- 25:58Speaker 5: actually a lot of different platforms that are accessible to
- 26:01Speaker 5: people who are investing with a low income. So there's
- 26:05Speaker 5: micro investing, and there's investment platforms that are able to
- 26:08Speaker 5: be invested on with one cent.
- 26:10Speaker 1: But then there are also ones.
- 26:12Speaker 5: Let's be honest that if you discovered them first, you
- 26:14Speaker 5: might assume that you are just out of the market
- 26:16Speaker 5: because you don't have that five hundred dollars to start
- 26:18Speaker 5: right back, Like if you did your research and just
- 26:21Speaker 5: said top investing platforms in Australia and self wealth came
- 26:24Speaker 5: up first, and you hadn't listened to Cheese on the
- 26:25Speaker 5: Money and you didn't understand this market, you go, oh,
- 26:28Speaker 5: I don't have five hundred bucks. I thought investing might
- 26:31Speaker 5: have been for me and it's not, and then the
- 26:33Speaker 5: conversation ends there. Whereas if we give you everything on
- 26:36Speaker 5: a platter and I say, okay, here's your education, please
- 26:39Speaker 5: absorb all of this. Now here's a table which is
- 26:41Speaker 5: actually in my investing book, and I think I also
- 26:44Speaker 5: have it for free download on my website, or make
- 26:46Speaker 5: sure it is if it's not by the time this
- 26:48Speaker 5: episode comes out, though, And it's basically a table that
- 26:51Speaker 5: compares all of the platforms, their features, their benefits, how
- 26:55Speaker 5: much they cost, what their minimum investments are, and what
- 26:58Speaker 5: other like bells and whistles and information you need on it,
- 27:00Speaker 5: because I couldn't find one place that wasn't an advertising
- 27:04Speaker 5: platform that compared them. Because I was like, all right, well,
- 27:07Speaker 5: you deserve to be able to see the fees on
- 27:09Speaker 5: Rays versus Spaceship if you're planning on micro investing and
- 27:12Speaker 5: have it be really transparent. Everywhere was a paid advertising
- 27:16Speaker 5: platform or like you go onto the Raise website and
- 27:18Speaker 5: they're talking about the Spaceship fees, I'm like, well, that's
- 27:21Speaker 5: not going to be the.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Best place to get information about whether Spaceship's good for
- 27:25Speaker 1: me or not.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Right, So I think it's all about doing your research,
- 27:28Speaker 5: but then also not feeling overwhelmed because investing in twenty
- 27:32Speaker 5: twenty three is super accessible and you can do it
- 27:35Speaker 5: and it is absolutely worth doing it, Like it is
- 27:38Speaker 5: not something that we do because you need millions in retirement.
- 27:41Speaker 5: Do not feel that pressure, like discount that completely, but
- 27:46Speaker 5: like start building your financial literacy. I've had people ask me, oh, Vie,
- 27:50Speaker 5: I'm just so excited about my investment journey, but I'm
- 27:53Speaker 5: still in a bit of personal debt. If that's what's
- 27:55Speaker 5: going to motivate you, and you already have your emergency
- 27:58Speaker 5: fund and you are up to date on your pains
- 28:00Speaker 5: five or ten bucks invested on an investment platform, so
- 28:03Speaker 5: that you feel like your life is progressing and you
- 28:06Speaker 5: feel like you are getting ahead financially, that's a good
- 28:09Speaker 5: investment from my perspective. Yeah, Like you need to make
- 28:12Speaker 5: the right decision for you though, and I can't tell
- 28:14Speaker 5: you what that is because for a lot of other people,
- 28:17Speaker 5: they'd be like, oh my gosh, I don't even want
- 28:18Speaker 5: one share or one one cent edf before I'm out
- 28:22Speaker 5: of debt, because that will give me anxiety because that
- 28:24Speaker 5: money could have been getting me out of debt.
- 28:26Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, it's.
- 28:28Speaker 5: A completely personal decision, and I think that you guys
- 28:31Speaker 5: need to make that yourselves. But my job is to
- 28:33Speaker 5: just give you all of the resources that you deserve
- 28:36Speaker 5: to have access to to make those decisions properly for yourself.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I love that, I reckon that's all we have time
- 28:41Speaker 1: for today.
- 28:42Speaker 5: V Now, oh, I'm not telling I know I could
- 28:45Speaker 5: go on and on and on, and I have before
- 28:47Speaker 5: I know. Thank you've actually written down a cute little
- 28:50Speaker 5: list of a few episodes that you think people should
- 28:52Speaker 5: go back to to listen to.
- 28:54Speaker 1: They haven't already, what are they?
- 28:56Speaker 4: Yes, So obviously we have done a few episodes this
- 28:59Speaker 4: year that will be very helpful to you. So the
- 29:01Speaker 4: first one I'm thinking of is I believe it was
- 29:04Speaker 4: the fourth of Jam we did setting up an investment
- 29:07Speaker 4: plan for the new year yep. And then feb first,
- 29:09Speaker 4: we is Scarcity Mindset investing.
- 29:11Speaker 1: That was a good one.
- 29:12Speaker 5: I mean, I'm biased because it was literally my podcast,
