- 0:00Oh god. Oh my god.
- 0:02Fuck!
- 0:14Hey, we saw his dick this time though.
- 0:17It was a stunt dick.
- 0:18Oh, boo.
- 0:19That was 100% not Nick Cage.
- 0:21Boo.
- 0:23Which one?
- 0:24In City of Angels.
- 0:25Oh yeah.
- 0:27Welcome back to...
- 0:27He takes that very hot shower.
- 0:29Oh, oh you're talking about the shower.
- 0:30No, there was definitely a modesty sock.
- 0:31I told... I...
- 0:33Stopped it. He paused it.
- 0:35Enhance.
- 0:36Enhance.
- 0:38How else are you going to find a replicant
- 0:39unless you're looking at their dick?
- 0:41That's true.
- 0:41Yeah.
- 0:42I always look for their like backs
- 0:44glowing after I have sex with them.
- 0:47Oh wait, no, that's a Cylon.
- 0:49Wait, don't you ask them like turtle questions?
- 0:51Isn't that the trick?
- 0:52Yeah.
- 0:53Which Ninja Turtle is your favorite?
- 0:55Donatello.
- 0:56Cylon.
- 1:02This is the weirdest
- 1:04welcome back to Cage match
- 1:05colon around about way of meeting Nicholas Cage.
- 1:08But I didn't see a better...
- 1:10a better way for us to do this.
- 1:12Welcome back to our Nicholas Cage podcast.
- 1:14I am Sean,
- 1:15here with my co-host,
- 1:17and I'm Nick,
- 1:18and our producer.
- 1:19Hi, I'm Peter.
- 1:20And we talk about Nicholas Cage films
- 1:22for reasons that have not been explained to me.
- 1:25Yeah.
- 1:26Yeah, okay.
- 1:27The concept of this podcast
- 1:29is that Nick and Sean are going to evaluate
- 1:3164 Nicholas Cage movies
- 1:33head-to-head,
- 1:34bracket style,
- 1:35to determine the best,
- 1:37most cagey,
- 1:39most enjoyable Nick Cage film
- 1:41at the end of this entire process.
- 1:44Yeah?
- 1:44Yeah.
- 1:45Yeah.
- 1:45That'll be next year.
- 1:47Oh God, yeah.
- 1:48No, it's a...
- 1:48we're a ways off.
- 1:49We'll see you in 2025, Nick Cage.
- 1:52I will say, the more we get into this
- 1:53the more we keep finding
- 1:55interesting films we've never heard of
- 1:57that don't technically star Nick Cage,
- 1:59I'm regretting not putting Kick Ass on the list.
- 2:02I know.
- 2:02I do feel kind of bad
- 2:04in that regard.
- 2:06Like, there are some pretty amazing
- 2:09auxiliary Cage movies.
- 2:12In our defense, we attempted to find films
- 2:14that like, star to Nick Cage,
- 2:16and are finding through the course of history
- 2:19that his name has been retroactively added to things
- 2:22as a starring role.
- 2:23Yeah, that's definitely the case.
- 2:24I mean, I think with these two movies,
- 2:26you could make a case that he kind of
- 2:29steals one of them,
- 2:31and definitely is the main actor in the other one.
- 2:34Yes.
- 2:34I mean, he did get the and credit on
- 2:37Kiss of Dread.
- 2:38Everybody alphabetically.
- 2:39Yeah.
- 2:40And Nick Cage.
- 2:42So this week...
- 2:42Because even his name defies order.
- 2:46That is actually something I want to talk about this week.
- 2:49His name?
- 2:50Him defying order.
- 2:51Nicholas.
- 2:53That's a good name.
- 2:54A fine name, strong,
- 2:56upstanding.
- 2:58Yeah, law-abiding.
- 2:59Gurfy.
- 3:00A meaty dork of a name.
- 3:02Yeah, dude.
- 3:03You guys say I'm bad at segues.
- 3:06This week, we are talking about...
- 3:07Oh, yeah, you couldn't even segue out of that.
- 3:09What a loser.
- 3:11City of Angels, everyone's favorite movie
- 3:14about God and angels.
- 3:16We're going to talk about God and angels this week.
- 3:18We already bumped into
- 3:19we already bumped left behind, didn't we?
- 3:21Yeah, we did.
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:23These two should have been together.
- 3:24Because there is not...
- 3:25They will be in the end.
- 3:26There's not...
- 3:28There's not a through line for these two films.
- 3:29So we're doing City of Angels and Kiss of Death,
- 3:32a movie I've honestly never heard of.
- 3:34Yeah, I don't think anyone actually heard of Kiss of Death,
- 3:36which is shocking given the amount of like...
- 3:38The star power.
- 3:39...talent in there.
- 3:40It's got a lot of people in it.
- 3:41All right.
- 3:41Well, let's start there.
- 3:43Kiss of Death.
- 3:44What year did this come out?
- 3:4595.
- 3:4695. It was filmed in 94.
- 3:47All right.
- 3:48So, yeah.
- 3:48I'm going no notes on this.
- 3:50So, yeah, let's see what happens.
- 3:52Who was the director?
- 3:53Dude.
- 3:54Yeah, you got it.
- 3:55I think he was Swedish.
- 3:56It was Barbay Schroeder.
- 3:58Yeah, he's like a Swedish-American or something like that.
- 4:01The set designer was named Mel Bourne.
- 4:03Yeah, that was pretty good.
- 4:05That's pretty good.
- 4:06I thought that was funny.
- 4:07Nick Cage is the and of this film and Nick Cage.
- 4:11So he's not the star.
- 4:12This film stars David Caruso.
- 4:14And this was his like jumping off point
- 4:16to try and start a legit film career.
- 4:19Left NYPD Blue for this thing.
- 4:21He did.
- 4:22Run through the main people in this movie
- 4:24because it's pretty fucking amazing.
- 4:25David Caruso, Nicholas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci.
- 4:33We got the return of the Tucci.
- 4:34And Hot Mean Tucci too.
- 4:36Hot Mean Tucci, Michael Rapoport, creepy Michael Rapoport,
- 4:40young Michael Rapoport.
- 4:42I like saying Rapoport.
- 4:44Ving Rhames.
- 4:45Have you ever watched those videos Michael Rapoport does online
- 4:49where he's like got that really ugly cat?
- 4:53Yes.
- 4:54And he's just like, come look, that cat's back.
- 4:58That fucking cat.
- 4:59That's a good Rapoport.
- 5:01Are you shocked that Nick does a good Rapoport?
- 5:04No, I shouldn't be at this point.
- 5:06Philip Baker Hall, Helen Hunt.
- 5:09And this is a throwaway role, but I just find it fascinating.
- 5:13And I want to talk about this with you guys.
- 5:15Hope Davis.
- 5:16So this was one of Hope Davis's first film roles.
- 5:20Hope Davis is my weird celebrity crush.
- 5:23Who's Hope Davis?
- 5:25She was a junior Brown's girlfriend.
- 5:27Little junior Brown's girlfriend.
- 5:28Oh, the one he bench presses.
- 5:29Yeah.
- 5:30Oh, OK.
- 5:31Yeah, I got it.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:32And then she's the one who like.
- 5:33The one who calls him a slur.
- 5:35Distracts the feds to kidnap the baby or the little girl.
- 5:41What was yours, Peter?
- 5:42OK, so my favorite one is Kevin Corrigan, who is.
- 5:46I didn't know you had a crush on Kevin Corrigan.
- 5:48Oh, of course.
- 5:49No, I love Kevin Corrigan.
- 5:51I think his acting career is exactly what I would want from an acting career.
- 5:55It's like you're never really the main star, but you're in everything
- 6:00and you're always kind of a shitty slimeball.
- 6:03He's the guy that's selling him the Infinity.
- 6:07And like that guy, it's like he's got like a cool diverse background.
- 6:11But like if you need an Italian who's sleazy, Kevin Corrigan,
- 6:15if you need a Puerto Rican who's sleazy, Kevin Corrigan,
- 6:17if you need an Irishman who's sleazy, Kevin Corrigan, it fucking rules.
- 6:21That guy is perfect for being a shitty sleazy dude.
- 6:25Nick, what weird celebrity crush do you have in this film?
- 6:27Michael Rapoport.
- 6:29Yeah, Rapoport.
- 6:30Just really got me there.
- 6:32So yeah, Nick, what's this movie about?
- 6:34So this movie is about Caruso's dude who.
- 6:40Jimmy Kilmartin.
- 6:41Yeah, who is trying to go on the straight and narrow.
- 6:44He used to boost cars and he gets pulled back into the scene
- 6:49by his cousin played by Michael Rapoport.
- 6:51Ronnie Gannon.
- 6:53Like a real piece of shit.
- 6:55Yeah. Oh, yeah. He's fucking terrible.
- 6:57That's what makes it so hot.
- 7:01They get like pinched on a job trying to steal like four transport trucks
- 7:08of vehicles.
- 7:10I mean, it would have been fine if they staggered it.
- 7:12I'm sure. Why the fuck did they just like four of them in a row
- 7:15riding down because they were running late?
- 7:17Yeah, they were working for Nicolas Cage.
- 7:19Yeah. OK.
- 7:20Fucking bad little a little little Junior Brown.
- 7:25Yeah. But I do like that.
- 7:27He teaches us what an acronym is.
- 7:28That is the son of Big Junior Brown.
- 7:30Yeah. Credited Big Junior Brown.
- 7:35And who played him again?
- 7:36That was a name.
- 7:37So to look bigger. Oh, yeah.
- 7:39That was great.
- 7:40Yeah, I like him as an actor just in general.
- 7:41He played a good shitty old man.
- 7:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:44I mean, he didn't have to do much.
- 7:46He just kind of looked around and sneered and stuff.
- 7:49So but he gets pinched boost in, you know, these transport trucks of cars
- 7:55and gets what three years in jail finds out like what Michael Rapoport
- 8:02like tried to bang his wife and stuff while he was in jail and his wife died.
- 8:08And so like he thinks that Rapoport like boned his wife and then she died
- 8:14because of it.
- 8:14And so he puts into action this plan that gets Rapoport killed by giving
- 8:22up information on himself and a couple other jobs and makes it all look
- 8:27like Ronnie was a snitch.
- 8:31So Little Junior, Junior Little Junior Brown has him killed and then he
- 8:40does the murder.
- 8:41Yeah, Big Junior has him killed Little Junior punches his face.
- 8:45That's fair.
- 8:46Then when David Caruso gets out of jail, the DA Tucci is like leaning
- 8:53on him and has him go undercover with a wire to find more information
- 9:01about Little Junior Brown and this guy Omar played by Ving Rhames that
- 9:07gets him mixed up in all sorts of crazy shenanigans.
- 9:12Eventually he has to get his way out and that I guess results in Nick
- 9:19Cage dying and like gunfights and stuff.
- 9:23I think there was a car jump too.
- 9:25Okay.
- 9:27Well, wait, did Cage die?
- 9:28No, he didn't.
- 9:29Half of that was fake.
- 9:31Did you watch this movie?
- 9:32I watched it twice.
- 9:33It's fair.
- 9:34It's got a lot of nothing.
- 9:38Oh, I mean, it's got more than nothing.
- 9:40No, it's I actually thoroughly enjoyed the film, but I like a caper.
- 9:45No, I thought this movie was fun.
- 9:47I really enjoyed Nick Cage as a heel.
- 9:51Yeah, we never seen a cage as the bad guy.
- 9:53Yeah, good antagonist energy in this.
- 9:55His first scene there when Caruso shows up the driver they got is drunk
- 10:00at the wheel.
- 10:01So Nick Cage just walks up grabs the guy by his collar and throws him
- 10:06from the cab of the truck into another truck and it is a single shot.
- 10:11Yeah, they don't pull the way Nick Cage just yeeted a guy out of a truck
- 10:15cap into another truck.
- 10:17Nick Cage did a like daily workouts.
- 10:20Like he was getting himself all jacked up for this and like what was
- 10:25it after this?
- 10:26Oh Con Air.
- 10:27So like these two movies were like his biggest bulkiest.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:31Yeah, he looks big in this one.
- 10:33Yeah, I think it's interesting because he bench-pressed a girl 40 times.
- 10:37He did.
- 10:37He got the record.
- 10:38Yeah, you know, he does play like he's a he's a villain.
- 10:41He's the bad guy, but he's also sort of like heart of gold.
- 10:44He philosophizes.
- 10:46He philosophizes.
- 10:47He definitely like tried to look out for Helen Hunt when Rappaport was
- 10:50being a total piece of shit.
- 10:51So yeah, Rappaport is Jimmy's cousin.
- 10:55Little Junior is going to kill Rappaport if Jimmy doesn't help him out
- 10:59on this one job.
- 11:00According to Ronnie.
- 11:02According to Ronnie, but he does it gets pinched by Detective Samuel
- 11:07L. Jackson who gets shot in the face by the drunk guy.
- 11:10Yeah, but it's only a glancing blow.
- 11:12Yeah, but I'm like that's a glancing blow because it fucked up his eye.
- 11:16All right, that works.
- 11:18Yeah, it was a little bit of a stretch, but it's fine.
- 11:21So once he's in jail Ronnie Rappaport shows up and he goes to Helen
- 11:26Hunt who plays Jimmy's wife and just like, oh, here's 150.
- 11:31It's all I can get for you, but you can come work for me if you want.
- 11:34Yeah, he's like, I'm paying you out of my own pocket and everything.
- 11:37And then we later find out that big juniors like you're giving her the
- 11:39400 a week, right?
- 11:40He's like, oh, yeah, of course.
- 11:42And then he's like give her a car and then he's like, hey girl, I want to
- 11:45get you a car.
- 11:46He's a real slimeball.
- 11:47And then yeah, Little Junior is like take her home.
- 11:50And he's like, okay, it's like her home.
- 11:52Yeah, my father says take her home now.
- 11:55Fuck.
- 11:56Oh, that's so good.
- 11:58That's okay.
- 11:59So that scene in the strip club has my favorite line, which I just want to
- 12:05get out now because I don't want to know us to steal it, which is when
- 12:07the big rain first shows up and Nick Cage goes.
- 12:10Hey, what's the what?
- 12:11Yeah, that was actually also my favorite line.
- 12:14So I'm glad I said the fuck.
- 12:15Oh one.
- 12:15Oh, yeah.
- 12:16Yeah, mine comes later so I can save it.
- 12:19But yeah, so Jimmy served some time.
- 12:22Rappaport continues to like ply Helen Hunt with booze and she wakes up
- 12:26in his skeezy apartment.
- 12:28Oh, yeah.
- 12:29And she's like a recovering alcoholic.
- 12:30She's in AA.
- 12:32I almost said AAA.
- 12:33That wouldn't have worked.
- 12:34And she's like, she's have her outside assistance for that.
- 12:37They should though.
- 12:38It would be nice.
- 12:39It would solve a lot of people's problems.
- 12:40No shit.
- 12:41But she doesn't drink.
- 12:42She sees Rappaport try and put a lead pipe through someone's head and
- 12:47that freaks her out so she starts drinking again immediately.
- 12:49Mm-hmm.
- 12:50And rolling rock of all things.
- 12:52Great.
- 12:53Right.
- 12:53And that was also Kevin Corrigan.
- 12:54So there we are.
- 12:56It all comes around and then she tries to get out of there.
- 13:01Get out of his place and she peels out in his car almost hits another
- 13:05car and then head on collision with a semi truck.
- 13:08Okay.
- 13:09So there's a semi in a residential area and how was it possibly going
- 13:12fast enough that it killed her?
- 13:13These are two movies where sorry spoiler alert for later, but two
- 13:18people die in the dumbest fucking semi accident protagonist wives.
- 13:23Although this is a bad time.
- 13:24So and then Jimmy's let out of prison to go to the funeral.
- 13:28I mean, he's in cuffs and there's like guards there.
- 13:30I think one of my favorite notes that I have on here and I don't even
- 13:33remember exactly what caused it, but I just wrote no big shock.
- 13:37Cops are pieces of shit.
- 13:39Oh man.
- 13:40Yeah, the cops fucking sucked.
- 13:42So when he finds out that his wife never went home was at Jimmy's
- 13:45place, he drops the dime on a bunch of jobs.
- 13:48He was involved with and mentions everyone but Ronnie.
- 13:51So when it gets back up the chain, everyone thinks Ronnie's a snitch.
- 13:53Hence why he gets his face punched in.
- 13:56Mm-hmm.
- 13:57I don't know.
- 13:58We're talking about we're talking about shitty cops.
- 14:00So his one deal for that was he gets to go visit his daughter.
- 14:04Sam Jackson shows up blames Jimmy for getting shot in the head, even
- 14:07though Jimmy tried to stop the shooting and like got shot in the
- 14:10hand and Sam Jackson like take the cuffs off and then like proceeds
- 14:13to like beat him up a bit rough him up.
- 14:15That's what it was.
- 14:16That was my note.
- 14:16Yeah.
- 14:17Yeah.
- 14:17The cops were shit.
- 14:18Pretty standard operating procedure.
- 14:21Yeah, but when he finally gets out of prison, they wire him up to
- 14:24go they want to get Omar to connect him to Junior who's dead.
- 14:30I want to talk about the scene where oh yeah, oh man.
- 14:34That was so good.
- 14:35Nick Cage frantically jumping up and down while crying and punching
- 14:40at a fake plant.
- 14:41Yeah, just fucking getting his energy out expressing himself.
- 14:46Junior.
- 14:47I mean, this is Nick Cage podcast.
- 14:49Let's just talk about Junior.
- 14:50This is the weirdest character.
- 14:52He's got so many things.
- 14:53You get one thing.
- 14:54You get one defining characteristic.
- 14:56This guy's got like four.
- 14:57He's got a sweet goatee.
- 14:59Sweet goatee.
- 14:59Strong boy.
- 15:00Wears white all the time.
- 15:02Track suits.
- 15:03When he's lifting when he's lifting when he's doing the 40 bench
- 15:06presses of the lady, his tank top has cutouts in the side.
- 15:12Oh, yeah, that's such a weird one.
- 15:14Yeah, it's like super tight and it's got little windows so you
- 15:16can look at his lats, but he also has asthma asthma and he hates
- 15:21the taste of metal.
- 15:22No silverware for Nick Cage.
- 15:23Yeah, so he only has plastic.
- 15:26Which is apparently directly from the script that wasn't like a
- 15:29weird choice he made and he's a philosophizer.
- 15:31Nick, do you want to do a dramatic reading with me real quick?
- 15:34Oh, sure.
- 15:34All right.
- 15:35I have an acronym for myself.
- 15:37You know what it is?
- 15:38Bad BAD.
- 15:41Balls attitude direction.
- 15:43You should give yourself an acronym because it helps you visualize
- 15:47your goals.
- 15:48How about fab?
- 15:49Fucked at birth.
- 15:50No good.
- 15:52Too negative.
- 15:53Yeah, that was my favorite quote where he just says too negative
- 15:57because he like put some real thought into it.
- 15:59Yeah, is that going to work?
- 16:01Is that a good one?
- 16:02No, no good.
- 16:03Too negative.
- 16:05Did you guys notice that his inhaler was bedazzled with the BAD?
- 16:09Yeah, you see that at the end.
- 16:10Nick Cage described his character as like a big terrible baby.
- 16:15Yes, it's pretty pretty spot-on.
- 16:17That's incredible.
- 16:18Like he's just got a very innocent kind of like nature about him
- 16:23like mentally kind of naive and innocent and but then just like
- 16:28throws tantrums and can't handle not getting his way about stuff.
- 16:32Nick Cage steals the show in this movie.
- 16:34Oh, yeah, definitely.
- 16:35Well, I'm not going to lie.
- 16:36I thought Caruso did great.
- 16:39I think especially the scenes where he's like just talking to either
- 16:44little junior or the cops.
- 16:46He plays exasperated and like no fucks to give so well in this movie.
- 16:54Like he's just like I don't fucking care.
- 16:56We're just going to do this job and I'm going to go.
- 16:58You can't do anything to me.
- 17:01Yeah, no, he's good.
- 17:03Like all the performances are good.
- 17:05There's not a bad performance in this film.
- 17:06I think the only one that didn't like do anything for me was Ving
- 17:10Rames because he was just sort of like a coked out dude.
- 17:13Yeah, I mean he was so background.
- 17:14Yeah.
- 17:15Yeah.
- 17:16Oh and the big twist is a junior kills Ving Rames in front of Jimmy
- 17:20and it turns out that Omar was a fed.
- 17:22Yeah, and like all of his gang bangers were feds and then and then
- 17:25you know legality.
- 17:27Yeah, then it becomes a court.
- 17:29Yeah, the feds don't want to prosecute because they have to give up a
- 17:33bunch of secret information.
- 17:34So they pretty much leave Jimmy twist in the wind drop him from
- 17:39witness protection and he has to go get the solved himself.
- 17:42Oh and Tucci sells him out because he'll get a federal judgeship for it.
- 17:46Yeah, I really like slimy Tucci.
- 17:48I think that's probably my favorite version of him.
- 17:50Yeah, I think it came across real well.
- 17:52I liked it a lot.
- 17:53He played it.
- 17:54Well, it was a good character.
- 17:56Do do I just like dirtbags?
- 17:59Yeah, maybe fuck.
- 18:00All right.
- 18:00I mean you like us.
- 18:01Yeah, true.
- 18:02It's fair and me.
- 18:05Like me.
- 18:06I got a real solid question.
- 18:08What is up with Caruso Jimmy and Rose Rose the babysitter?
- 18:15Yeah, Rose was the babysitter when he was still married to Helen
- 18:19Hunter, whatever.
- 18:20Yeah, she lived upstairs from them or whatever with her parents.
- 18:24She was the babysitter.
- 18:24Yeah, and would babysit for him whenever they were at a meetings.
- 18:28Then he goes to jail.
- 18:30His wife gets killed in an accident.
- 18:33And so Rose continues to like help raise the baby, even though the
- 18:40baby is now with the mother-in-law.
- 18:43Yeah.
- 18:43And then when he gets out, she's like, you've always got me.
- 18:49And then it's like, oh fuck.
- 18:50And then they get married right away.
- 18:52Wait immediately courthouse wedding.
- 18:54You married the babysitter that you only know from like raising your child.
- 18:59Yeah, I think it's strange.
- 19:01I this movie is an hour and 40 minutes and I think that it was just a
- 19:06lack of time to develop that relationship.
- 19:08But at that point, I'm like, why bother?
- 19:11I'm going to assume I know the answer to this, but did either of you
- 19:14guys watch the 1940 whatever version of this movie?
- 19:19No, no, I watched a couple clips.
- 19:20Did you watch anything?
- 19:21Not for this one.
- 19:22So I did.
- 19:24It's rated really well.
- 19:26It's supposed to be a great movie.
- 19:27Yeah, I did love that.
- 19:29So he's in prison for three years and the only person whose appearance
- 19:33changes in that three years is Rose.
- 19:36Like they change her hair and they, you know, get an older child.
- 19:40Yeah, I was going to say the child pretty well.
- 19:43Cruises the same haircut.
- 19:44Nick Cage has the same goatee.
- 19:46Like no one else updated their look in three years.
- 19:48Once you hit a certain age in your life, though, I think you've got
- 19:52your look on lockdown.
- 19:53Like if I tried to do it, if I like started to live my life without
- 19:57sideburns, like even mild sideburns as they are, it'd be weird.
- 20:03Nobody would like me.
- 20:04I just got this guy who thought he could go on living without sideburns
- 20:08and everybody would know when they look at me.
- 20:10They'd be like, I mean, I've gone through a fairly drastic like
- 20:13facial hair appearance in the last year.
- 20:16Wish you'd keep trying.
- 20:17Mean if you would finally figure out your look, I could finally
- 20:24stop drinking.
- 20:24I love it.
- 20:29Oh, this is a strange content to forget.
- 20:31Your face makes me sad.
- 20:33I love you too, Nick.
- 20:35What did you guys think of Cage's accent in this one?
- 20:39It wasn't a Boston like cop and it wasn't Gumby.
- 20:44So well, I watched an interview in the cage about this film
- 20:47and he was talking about how the interviewer asked him like this
- 20:50isn't your normal weird character that you normally do and he went
- 20:54on this whole thing about how Hollywood's memory is so short that
- 20:57Fox didn't want him for this film because Nick Cage is a weird
- 21:01funny man.
- 21:02He can't do he can't do tough guy and now I'm worried that I'll
- 21:06never be able to like do comedy again.
- 21:07You know, it's funny.
- 21:08We've seen him in tough guy roles several times now and I never
- 21:13am really sold on him as a tough guy.
- 21:16This one kind of worked for me.
- 21:18Yeah, other than the fact that he also like hedged it with being
- 21:21sort of a sensitive tough guy.
- 21:22Yeah, but I mean that's one of the things that really drew him
- 21:25to this character from what I read, but I'm thinking of his
- 21:28the beginning of face-off castor Troy the only other time we've
- 21:32seen him kind of be a bad guy and it's more of a cult of personality
- 21:35and more of a sleazy look at me character rather than being
- 21:39fucking brick shit house.
- 21:40Sure.
- 21:41Do you know what he filmed right before this?
- 21:43This was 1995.
- 21:45Yeah, it could happen to you.
- 21:47It could happen to you.
- 21:48Yeah, what a weird so he felt like he filmed back-to-back in
- 21:51New York.
- 21:52It could happen to you was before this.
- 21:54That was a big body change.
- 21:57Yeah.
- 21:57Yeah, no shit.
- 21:58He's pretty big in this.
- 21:59Yeah, and and Harry this came out the same year as he won his
- 22:03Oscar because this came out the same year as leaving Las Vegas.
- 22:06Any other interesting facts?
- 22:08I don't have a ton on this one.
- 22:10So in the interview, I watched with him about it.
- 22:12Can we all agree that Kate doesn't give a great interview?
- 22:14It depends on how much coke he can afford because he's given
- 22:18some really good ones.
- 22:19Okay, this wasn't one of those but he was asked about famously
- 22:23playing weirdos and giving very over-the-top performances and
- 22:28this quote stuck out to me.
- 22:29It's like about little Junior Brown and how much of that
- 22:33character he brought to the script and he's like, it's true
- 22:35that I stuck to the script, but I do try to put a bit of absurd
- 22:39almost comic slant on things even kind of peak his career
- 22:44mid-90s.
- 22:45He knows what he's selling and has leaned into it.
- 22:50This was a pretty straightforward movie and character for him.
- 22:55Yeah, it was definitely a memorable performance.
- 22:59I will never forget him bench pressing that girl.
- 23:02I'll never forget him like chucking a guy across a truck yard
- 23:09and his best goatee yet.
- 23:10Oh, absolutely.
- 23:12Also Sternenbush.
- 23:13So you're tracking this is this just is mid-90s just peak
- 23:17chest hair absolutely.
- 23:18Okay.
- 23:18Yep.
- 23:19So his his strip club is called baby cakes, baby cakes.
- 23:23Yeah, which really did not make me happy.
- 23:27I loved it.
- 23:29I love the name.
- 23:30I love the sign.
- 23:31I love that the actual location was just like an abandoned
- 23:36like business lot next to a McDonald's and it's abandoned
- 23:41to this day.
- 23:41Yeah, they put up this and shot the movie and nobody's done
- 23:44anything with it.
- 23:45The TV version of this obviously has a bunch of fuzzing out
- 23:48and black bars of the strippers, but there's a scene where
- 23:53he's talking to Caruso and there is just a topless stripper
- 23:56behind them and they've digitally put a dress on her.
- 23:59Did you of all the things why would you put a dress?
- 24:02Did you somehow watch this like on TV?
- 24:05No, it's just one of the fun facts about online.
- 24:07Okay.
- 24:08Oh, yeah, this movie was hard to find.
- 24:10Basically impossible to find unless you want to buy a VHS.
- 24:13How much was the VHS neck?
- 24:15I haven't purchased it yet.
- 24:17Are you going to?
- 24:18Yeah, we need a complete collection.
- 24:20Yeah, I'm over halfway on all of these movies.
- 24:23So and actually we're almost halfway through the whole fucking
- 24:27shebang.
- 24:28Yeah, well the first round first round shebang.
- 24:31You're all stuck with us for more shebang.
- 24:33Shebang Arang.
- 24:35I don't know what that means.
- 24:37Fuck move on.
- 24:38Yeah, City of Angels.
- 24:39Yeah, that's a movie.
- 24:40I see that.
- 24:41That's how you fucking segue.
- 24:42You're going to take that Sean.
- 24:44You're going to rip on my side.
- 24:45These movies have no connection whatsoever.
- 24:48Actually, they're both based off or both remakes of movies.
- 24:53That's a loose connection.
- 24:55I don't know.
- 24:56It's a real Nick Cage's outside of a strip club in both of them.
- 25:00It's fair.
- 25:01God damn it.
- 25:02No, I'm slipping.
- 25:03City of Angels.
- 25:04Nick Cage is a fucking angel.
- 25:06Nick Cage is a national treasure.
- 25:08End statement.
- 25:10So a movie about Nick Cage being a creepy stalker.
- 25:14Okay, first I want to say I watched 80% of the movie that this is a remake of.
- 25:22How was that?
- 25:23It is mid 80s Berlin and black and white.
- 25:30It is hard.
- 25:32It's all subtitled.
- 25:33It's Soviet era Berlin and you think all the voiceover from like the people's thoughts
- 25:40was like annoying in the Nick Cage one.
- 25:45Watch it in German where you have to read it.
- 25:48The movie starts off with a mother freaking out because her daughter has a high fever
- 25:53and you just hear oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit and you notice the woman's not saying
- 25:57anything like she's not moving her mouth.
- 25:59So there's no context yet.
- 26:00So there's just voiceover and then Nick Cage just sitting in a
- 26:03trench coat with a scarf and a mesh shirt in this child's bedroom.
- 26:08He had a mesh shirt on.
- 26:10Yeah, I don't think that's right.
- 26:12Yeah, I was gonna say I don't remember this.
- 26:14Like did he just get out of dirt club?
- 26:15It's like very fine.
- 26:17It's a weird shirt.
- 26:18It's very textured.
- 26:19I think he wears the same clothes until he becomes human and then he has the same clothes
- 26:23again until like he gets someone else's clothes until Nick Offerman gets him off that roof.
- 26:29Damn it.
- 26:29All right.
- 26:30You guys did notice.
- 26:31Wait, is Nick Offerman in this?
- 26:32Yeah, man.
- 26:33He was the construction worker.
- 26:34Holy shit.
- 26:36All right.
- 26:36God.
- 26:37Oh, yeah.
- 26:37This movie.
- 26:38We'll touch base on that because that's my favorite quote.
- 26:40This movie.
- 26:40Is it yours?
- 26:42No, I don't think I have it.
- 26:44This one wasn't great for us, but no this movie automatically wins.
- 26:46So solely so I could watch it again to see Nick Offerman.
- 26:50Yeah, it's like you can watch it again on your own time.
- 26:52I don't want to.
- 26:55Oh, yeah, we were watching it and Josie was like that was Nick Offerman.
- 26:58I was like who?
- 26:59Who are you talking about?
- 27:00He's like the construction worker and then I had to look it up.
- 27:03And it sure as shit was.
- 27:04Nick Cage plays everyone's favorite angel Seth.
- 27:09Yeah.
- 27:09Okay.
- 27:10Yeah, right.
- 27:10You've got Cassiel.
- 27:12His best friend played by Andrew Bauer is Cassiel.
- 27:16So I want to know I was a terrible Catholic.
- 27:19I was kicked out of Sunday school as a child.
- 27:21So I didn't really pay attention or read anything.
- 27:24Anyone else who was maybe raised closer to the church.
- 27:27Tell me who Seth is supposed to be.
- 27:29Oh, it's Setharian.
- 27:31I'm assuming that's bullshit.
- 27:33Of course it is.
- 27:35No, you can come to me for all of your religious based commentary.
- 27:39I would come to you if we were talking about like angels described by the Bible where they're just like wings and eyes.
- 27:45Okay, but like nice.
- 27:47Sethandriel.
- 27:49Isn't that what I just said?
- 27:51Was it?
- 27:51Yeah, you're late.
- 27:52God damn it.
- 27:54My brain is not working.
- 27:55I don't like this.
- 27:58So he plays Sethandria.
- 28:00Wait, wait, wait.
- 28:01Sethandria.
- 28:03Say it's sexy.
- 28:04Now you got it.
- 28:06This movie just this movie starts off as a late 90s YouTube music video.
- 28:12This movie starts off with the worst green screening since driving.
- 28:16Yeah, it's the Humanity Bureau.
- 28:19Awful.
- 28:20Yeah, Cassiel and Seth just sitting on a highway sign in LA and it's.
- 28:26These are like direct ports of like shots from the from Wings of Desire.
- 28:31I'm sure it is.
- 28:32It's like that's a better name for this movie too.
- 28:34Yeah.
- 28:35Well, not when you say it in German.
- 28:37What's it in German?
- 28:40Drop down in the comments and and tell Nick.
- 28:42Yeah, give me some garbledy gook that looks like German for Wings of Desire.
- 28:47Oh, also, I'm sorry.
- 28:48I thought I knew where comments were, but I don't think comments are a thing.
- 28:52No.
- 28:53So find us on Reddit.
- 28:54Yeah.
- 28:55And comment there.
- 28:56We're not going to tell you where to find us.
- 28:58We're cage match pod on Reddit.
- 29:00There's there's doxing us already.
- 29:03There's comments on YouTube.
- 29:04People don't leave them, but they're there.
- 29:06Yeah, you can.
- 29:07I mean, the bots didn't do anything.
- 29:09So my question is, just everyone just have an angel.
- 29:12Like there are so many angels just hang out for no reason.
- 29:16I don't think it's like specific angels for specific people from.
- 29:19I mean, I know it's not based on the movie based on the two movies that I mostly watch.
- 29:24So the angels hang out and they like meet people when they die.
- 29:27And okay, let's talk about this interview questions.
- 29:30It's very confusing.
- 29:31So like he's a guide and that part makes sense to me, right?
- 29:34Like the little girl is going to die.
- 29:36Somebody else is going to die.
- 29:37He helps them get through that little girl gets to see her dead body.
- 29:40Right. Super creepy, but she seems chill about it.
- 29:43But then there's the other scene where Cassiel and Seth are in the bodega and they just like chill out a potential shooting.
- 29:52Like are they there to be coolers?
- 29:54Like I don't understand what the fuck the angels are there for.
- 29:56They're not chilling it out. They're just like they're just peeping on people.
- 29:58They're just getting people's.
- 29:59Well, he does help him like no.
- 30:01Yeah, he calms him down and he touches him and gets cool.
- 30:04He touches him and then he's just hearing the guy's thoughts, but they're not actually.
- 30:08Oh, he's never had to touch them to hear their thoughts.
- 30:10I know. But yeah, I think I think that they're doing something.
- 30:14So like are they there to deescalate shit?
- 30:16But then like why aren't they doing more stuff?
- 30:18And then fucking fuck you, Seth.
- 30:20You're just going to go like get horny with a doctor instead of doing your job.
- 30:24A million dollar Christian question too.
- 30:26Like why aren't they doing more?
- 30:27What are these angels doing more?
- 30:30The million dollar Christian question is what's the deal Seth?
- 30:33Seth Andriel. His full fucking name.
- 30:36Oh, no, we know his full name.
- 30:37We'll talk about that later.
- 30:39The worst Kaiser So-Say ever.
- 30:42Oh, yeah, I love.
- 30:44Now we're going to talk about it now and you're going to edit it in later.
- 30:46No, I'm not.
- 30:47So so Seth falls in love falls in love with a doctor, which is again,
- 30:52the rules of angels because they can't feel anything physical,
- 30:56but they seem to have a full bevy of emotion.
- 30:59And he finds out that he can become human if he falls.
- 31:02This is going to be my weird tangent for this movie.
- 31:04So I saw this movie at the age of about what year did this come out?
- 31:08Ninety eight.
- 31:09Thirteen, fourteen. Whenever this came out, I saw this.
- 31:11I was trying to impress a girl. She wanted to go see it.
- 31:13So we went and saw it. I was young and dumb.
- 31:16It's been 20 odd years since I've seen this film.
- 31:18Dennis Franz bald old guy with mustache.
- 31:20I have just in my mind had Ron Jeremy as that character.
- 31:25Oh, God. I mean, in my head for 24 years, he is like the NYPD blue version of Ron Jeremy.
- 31:33I mean, he is. But like that has been the face of I know you're not there,
- 31:38but I can feel you. Yeah.
- 31:41Did you guys ever notice that Nick Cage and Ray Fiennes look really similar?
- 31:45No, but now that you mention it, I do want to point out the hardest working actor in this film,
- 31:50which is Nick Cage's hair plugs. Ray Fiennes.
- 31:53Is that Ray Fiennes? He's a he was Voldemort and like Schindler's List and Red Dragon.
- 31:59And Voldemort and Schindler's List. Yeah, in Schindler's List.
- 32:03It was a weird one. And also in Maiden Manhattan.
- 32:06That makes sense.
- 32:07I distinctly remember Schindler's List being credited.
- 32:11He's he's he's the bad guy in Imbruge, which here's my favorite cinematic quote ever.
- 32:17Yelling, yelling at his wife. You're a fucking inanimate object.
- 32:22That's nice. Yeah.
- 32:24This is a weird episode. That's fine.
- 32:27The weird movies. These are weird movies.
- 32:29And really, the less we talk about City of Angels, the better the episode is for it.
- 32:33Meg Ryan's a doctor who can't believe that someone would die on her watch
- 32:36because she did everything and Seth falls in love with her.
- 32:39But she's a cool doc. She rides a bike bike.
- 32:41Oh, so first, first bike scene.
- 32:44She is playing very Lucy Goosey and Laze Faire with like L.A.
- 32:48traffic City of Angels foreshadowing.
- 32:50Yeah. She later dies for being dumb on a bike.
- 32:54Yeah. Spoilers. This movie's not good.
- 32:56I don't care. It's not.
- 32:58It's bottom three Nicolas Cage movies for me.
- 33:00So it takes 40 minutes to introduce the protagonist.
- 33:04They give them 30 minutes to for to will they won't they?
- 33:07And then 10 minutes after they get together, they kill Meg Ryan off.
- 33:11And they've got that stupid relationship between Meg Ryan and that other doctor.
- 33:16And it's just like, what the fuck?
- 33:18Sean, did you know who he is?
- 33:20He looked familiar. He's he's he's he's he's Schindler's List.
- 33:24You know, he's Reginald Hargreaves in the Umbrella Academy.
- 33:27Oh, that's why. Oh, fuck.
- 33:29It's been 20 odd years.
- 33:31That's awesome. People don't age as well.
- 33:33And the cage on point.
- 33:35Schindler's List less so kind of amazing because, yeah, like that dude looks old as fuck.
- 33:40And Cage looks like a guy in his 50s, a guy who can afford to keep it up.
- 33:47Oh, yeah. He keeps it up.
- 33:49Oh, fuck. Right back to that shower scene.
- 33:53OK, let's talk about Dennis Franz character Nathaniel Messenger.
- 33:57OK, not messing her.
- 33:58It's a soft chain messenger.
- 34:00Yeah, he's a big body surfer. Yeah.
- 34:02Turns out. So he has to have like heart surgery.
- 34:05And it turns out that he at one point was also an angel.
- 34:08He's the one who teaches Nick Cage how to fall.
- 34:11You make the decision, then you fall. Fall.
- 34:15Well, I don't think angels are super creative since they've never had like that inspiration.
- 34:20So in my head, he was just like super literal about it.
- 34:23He's like, I don't know, you got to fall from grace.
- 34:27So jump off. You got to fall.
- 34:29They spend a lot of time on top of shit, too.
- 34:32Yeah, like they're always up high.
- 34:33Which I find OK, I like how they did justify that you have to make the decision to fall
- 34:38because I'm like, what if you trip?
- 34:40Well, you guys are I mean, you guys are always walking in unison,
- 34:43like not paying attention where you're going.
- 34:45I would have loved to see some angels just walking up the side of a building.
- 34:48They're everywhere. I feel like there was some shot that included them on the side of a building
- 34:53or at least angels in the background.
- 34:55There were definitely lots of scenes where like it zooms out a little bit
- 34:59and there's just like an angel on a balcony or something over the place.
- 35:02So this but I don't know, maybe maybe a Spider-Man.
- 35:06I'm confused.
- 35:07Seth gets obsessed with Meg Ryan's character.
- 35:11Dr. Maggie Rice starts stalking her.
- 35:14Like her name, there's like a prolonged bubble bath sequence
- 35:18where he's just in her room or in her bathroom.
- 35:20Jesus. OK, so the song that's playing.
- 35:22Oh, my God. The Paula Cole song.
- 35:24Like, holy fuck, you make me feel like the Amazon's running between my thighs.
- 35:30Incredible. It's talking about like flowers and like stamens and shit.
- 35:35And it's like, oh, this is like grossly sexy.
- 35:39So he's he's Nick Cage is stalking Meg Ryan.
- 35:41The weirdest boner right now.
- 35:45Literally, he starts.
- 35:46He starts showing up and like making himself be seen by her.
- 35:49And they go out a few times.
- 35:51He's exposing himself to her.
- 35:53He is. He's got that trench coat. It's great.
- 35:55She describes a pair to him.
- 35:58Eventually, she finds out that he doesn't have a history or isn't a person.
- 36:02She sees him like badly CG cut through his own hand and not bleed.
- 36:06Yeah, she tries to see does the magic thumb trick.
- 36:08Yeah, I just just want it to be known that Nick just tried to do a visual gag for
- 36:15an auditory form of entertainment.
- 36:19Fuck you all do it again.
- 36:21So she in this scene, they go to a picnic with Nathaniel Messinger
- 36:27after he gets out of the hospital.
- 36:29And Nathaniel, knowing that Seth is an angel, makes up a bunch of backstory for Seth.
- 36:34So Dr. Maggie doesn't like cotton on.
- 36:38And then she grills Seth about it.
- 36:40She's like, I don't even know your last name is like, you don't need to know.
- 36:42It's like, what's your last name?
- 36:43And he just looks behind and goes, plate.
- 36:47Seth plate. Yeah, that is my favorite quote.
- 36:50Just Seth plate like the worst Kaiser.
- 36:53So say ever. I do like that.
- 36:54It comes back though later when she's like,
- 36:56oh, I can't wait to become Mr.
- 36:57and Mrs. Plate.
- 37:01That'd be so good.
- 37:03Like if she actually took that name for like the 30 minutes, they were married.
- 37:08Well, they never get there.
- 37:09No. Yeah. Spoilers.
- 37:11So they break up because he's a big old weirdo can't bleed.
- 37:17And he's like, I'm different from you.
- 37:18And then she's like, I never want to see you again.
- 37:20So they stop seeing each other.
- 37:21And then she starts hanging out with Messenger and being like,
- 37:24why would God allow us to meet if we couldn't be together?
- 37:27It's like no one ever told you he was an angel.
- 37:29That makes no sense.
- 37:31But she taught him what a pair was.
- 37:32So I guess they have a deeper connection.
- 37:34Yeah. Describe it to me like Hemingway.
- 37:36Yeah. Also, the Hemingway quote they use to describe food is the worst quote
- 37:41because Hemingway just says the name of the food five times.
- 37:45It's like it tastes like oysters.
- 37:47The way that oysters taste, that oyster taste.
- 37:51That was only three.
- 37:53Oyster slur.
- 37:54Yeah. Oh, good.
- 37:55Thank you.
- 37:56We definitely saw Dennis Franz's balls.
- 37:59Oh, yeah.
- 38:00No, this is very, very similar to Sean Penn's balls.
- 38:04OK, yeah.
- 38:05But better.
- 38:06Into the ocean.
- 38:07Because it's Dennis Franz.
- 38:08Also, NYPD Blue.
- 38:10Yeah.
- 38:11So that's our other connection.
- 38:12NYPD Blue.
- 38:13Absolutely.
- 38:15So Seth has been studying humanity for like as long as humanity has existed.
- 38:20He can literally read Meg Ryan's mind.
- 38:22And he has no clue how to interact with her.
- 38:24He and Andre Brower, when they're talking about him taking the fall,
- 38:29and he's like, can you even imagine to taste water?
- 38:32And then Andre Brower is like, to feed a dog.
- 38:37I love Andre Brower.
- 38:38There's so many things that like if you've never done it.
- 38:44Please continue.
- 38:44Can you imagine to crack a sparkle, buddy?
- 38:46I can't.
- 38:47Whoa.
- 38:49To tell a lie.
- 38:51And Seth tells Cassiel about the fall.
- 38:55Sethandriel.
- 38:56Sethandriel.
- 38:56And Cassie Lela Graham.
- 39:00Casserole is.
- 39:01I don't think you have to do anything to Cassiel.
- 39:03That's a pretty fucking angel name.
- 39:06Cassie was immediately just like, so you going to do it?
- 39:08I want to see how this goes.
- 39:10Let's talk about the fall scene, because that's where we get.
- 39:12That's where I was about to go.
- 39:14Because so Nick Cage is on the top of a building being constructed
- 39:18and does a full with arms wide open.
- 39:20They probably had like, wait, was that the song that was playing?
- 39:23No, no, because the music on this was so fucking annoyingly.
- 39:27With arms wide open doesn't come out.
- 39:29Didn't come out for a few more years.
- 39:30Oh, OK.
- 39:31Well, there was some song about like, oh, in the arms of an angel
- 39:35or some shit like that.
- 39:36Yeah, that's a different one.
- 39:37So they were this one was just orchestral with like angelic choir.
- 39:41So here's my question, Nick.
- 39:43You might be able to answer this.
- 39:44So I'm a Glockman.
- 39:45God damn it. You got there.
- 39:46No, when he jumps, it starts cutting to like black
- 39:49and white footage of children playing.
- 39:51Is that the actual movie?
- 39:52The original movie?
- 39:54That's a good question, because I was like, what the fuck is this?
- 39:56It's super art house.
- 39:57It's like, here's people going onto a train.
- 39:59Yeah, that here's a pregnant belly.
- 40:02Since I'd have to see it again.
- 40:05The art style of Wings of Desire was very, very, very, very German art house.
- 40:12Yeah. So unlike anything to do with this movie,
- 40:15which had very few interesting creative choices.
- 40:17You're not wrong that it doesn't have a lot of like interesting shit to say.
- 40:21I do think that it was filmed well.
- 40:23It was filmed well.
- 40:24The director of photography, John Seale, is like a pretty fucking good.
- 40:29No, I mean, it was not shot poorly.
- 40:32I'm not. That's not what I'm saying.
- 40:34I just meant in terms of like this movie had nothing to say.
- 40:36Did you know one of his most recent movies was Mad Max Fury Road?
- 40:40I believe it. Yeah, that movie fucking rules.
- 40:42This movie was shot great.
- 40:43The scene with Franz and Cage overlooking the city from 31 stories up.
- 40:49They shot that.
- 40:50They built scaffolding out to this girder
- 40:52and then just sat the two of them out there with wires and had them like read their lines.
- 40:56And they're both afraid of heights.
- 40:57And they're both afraid of heights.
- 40:58Yeah, I would have shit myself doing that.
- 41:00That's also like the only time otherwise.
- 41:02That isn't CG. Yeah, it's weird.
- 41:04So anyway, Nick Cage takes his tumble off this building.
- 41:08And then apparently this is where we see Nick Cofferman.
- 41:11Yeah.
- 41:11Because so he wakes up bleeding for the first time and feeling for the first time
- 41:17on this like scaffolding and people are just looking up at him.
- 41:21And they're like a lot of them are just like sitting around having lunch.
- 41:24And I'm like, have they just been working around this maybe dead guy for hours?
- 41:28Yeah. Tell us behind the scenes, Nick.
- 41:30How is it at a construction site?
- 41:31How long does a corpse go unnoticed?
- 41:34I'm not going to lie.
- 41:35If you can get away with staring at something for a while and not doing something,
- 41:41you probably are going to like I've stared out windows and like I've watched bums fight.
- 41:46And it's awesome.
- 41:48I watched a person chase a cowboy hat down like Pike Street one time.
- 41:53Like it was just blowing in the wind and they couldn't catch it.
- 41:56And so I just watched.
- 41:57Have you ever felt like a cowboy hat blowing in the wind?
- 42:02I don't know this song.
- 42:04Oh, I think you're crushing it though.
- 42:08Billboard top 100 here we come.
- 42:10But okay, so that scene is my favorite quote from the entire thing,
- 42:13because this is when Cage gets to be a little cagey.
- 42:16This is the interesting shift for him.
- 42:19So yeah, the last 20 minutes of this film is when it gets good
- 42:21because it becomes a Nick Cage film.
- 42:23Yeah. Him like just stomping up and down.
- 42:25Maybe it's like 10 minutes of him doing fun stuff.
- 42:28That was fucking weird.
- 42:30But he wakes up and he's got blood on his hand and he goes, is this blood?
- 42:35This is blood.
- 42:36And then Nick Offerman goes, is it red?
- 42:39And he goes, red.
- 42:40Is it red?
- 42:43Color.
- 42:44I do have a question here.
- 42:46They established.
- 42:48God damn it, Nick.
- 42:49You're good at this game.
- 42:50Yeah.
- 42:51They established early on that as angels, they can understand every language.
- 42:55So he meets this Chinese woman is asking her which direction she's going
- 42:58and she's yelling at him in Chinese.
- 43:00He doesn't understand it.
- 43:00Like how the fuck does he know English?
- 43:03If it's all just supposed to be that all language is understood by him
- 43:06and he could just be understood.
- 43:07How does he know English and not Chinese?
- 43:10Well, I think he's lost his divine blessing at this point.
- 43:12But why English?
- 43:14They probably thought, boy, we can't afford to coach Nick Cage through speaking
- 43:19a different fucking language.
- 43:21Here he is speaking Latin now.
- 43:23We got to get a Latin coach for fucking Nick Cage.
- 43:26I just can't imagine his...
- 43:28Indulius Dolina, eh?
- 43:31That was really good.
- 43:32That was good.
- 43:34I don't think that first one was a real word.
- 43:36I don't. It doesn't matter because I don't speak fucking Latin.
- 43:38I don't have divine blessing.
- 43:40You know what?
- 43:40I speak English like people without divine blessing.
- 43:44So he's trying to like get to Tahoe because that's where she's at
- 43:47because she's going to get married.
- 43:48He's trying to hitchhike because he doesn't have exact change for the bus.
- 43:51And this car pulls up and he's like, hey, and then immediately gets jumped
- 43:55and his shoe stolen.
- 43:57They like punch him in the face right away.
- 43:59Yeah.
- 44:00I also thought that was Kevin Corrigan.
- 44:01Just saying. It might have been.
- 44:04They didn't credit any of those guys.
- 44:05So it probably was Kevin Corrigan.
- 44:07I mean, if I jumped a dude on the street, I wouldn't want to get credited for it either.
- 44:11And then number one way the cops find you and then the movie credits
- 44:14and then the Goo Goo Dolls play.
- 44:16He's outside.
- 44:16I don't want the world to see me.
- 44:20That's the one.
- 44:21God, I hate that song.
- 44:22And then now that he's an idiot human because apparently an eternity of memories
- 44:28gives him no context for human behavior.
- 44:31He's trying to get to Tahoe.
- 44:34Big Rick pulls up.
- 44:35Where are you going?
- 44:36Tahoe.
- 44:37I'm going to Reno.
- 44:39I'm going to Tahoe.
- 44:41I'm going to Reno.
- 44:44I'm going to Tahoe.
- 44:46Get in. We'll figure it out when you get there.
- 44:48There was a lot of patience in that one.
- 44:50Yeah.
- 44:51That's the second cool trucker we've had, though, because there was the Red Rock West trucker.
- 44:55That was pretty cool.
- 44:56Oh, yeah.
- 44:57He gets there. He finds her.
- 44:58They fall in love.
- 45:00They fuck once.
- 45:01Here's my quote from this film.
- 45:02Describe it.
- 45:04I can't.
- 45:06What's it feel like?
- 45:07Warm.
- 45:08Aching.
- 45:10That's it.
- 45:11I never want to hear somebody like verbalize like what it feels like to bust somebody again,
- 45:19like somebody who's never experienced a moment of it.
- 45:21Like, what does it feel like?
- 45:24Like.
- 45:25Did you see water balloons covered in light sand?
- 45:31And I can't get away.
- 45:34Trapped.
- 45:37I'm dying.
- 45:39That's your that's your address.
- 45:40I think we probably got this episode wrapped up.
- 45:43Thanks, guys.
- 45:44No, Meg Ryan.
- 45:45No, I'm spent Meg Ryan dies.
- 45:47And then he said she dies in the dumbest way.
- 45:51She's riding her bike.
- 45:52She has her eyes closed and her arms out.
- 45:54And she just loves life and God and angels and shit.
- 45:57Mrs. Plate.
- 45:59She will be Mrs.
- 46:00Plate.
- 46:01And she's listening to a dumb fucking song that's playing on the soundtrack.
- 46:05And then she runs into a logging truck.
- 46:07Yeah.
- 46:08That's it.
- 46:09What a dumb dumb.
- 46:10He feels her guy and then he moves into her apartment.
- 46:13Yeah, this is a dumb movie.
- 46:14Yeah, just here's my final thought on this film.
- 46:17So she introduces him to a pair.
- 46:19He goes to the market as a human and he fills up his basket with pairs crying.
- 46:23And there's that scene of him at the end where he just like he bites into a pair.
- 46:27And my only thought was what if that's a bad pair?
- 46:31What if that's his first pair and it's awful?
- 46:33He wouldn't know.
- 46:34All he would know is that it's sweet and like soft sand.
- 46:39But what if it wasn't?
- 46:40What if it wasn't an unripe pair?
- 46:41Because pairs, there's a wide range of what a pair can taste like.
- 46:45What if the thought was this, this was it.
- 46:48And he just regrets every decision he's made up to that point.
- 46:51He just chucks it into the Hudson and that's it.
- 46:54He would probably like it just for what it was.
- 46:57I'm sure, but I just not to rain on your joke.
- 47:01Nick, do you have anything else on this one?
- 47:03It fucking sucks.
- 47:04I'm being cut out of my own podcast apparently.
- 47:07No, I did not enjoy this movie.
- 47:08No, I mean the way he delivers lines like just so vacant.
- 47:13I'm like, oh, it hurt so bad.
- 47:16Listen, but what if we could just fall and be with the humans?
- 47:24I like even that's too much emotion.
- 47:26No, it's bad.
- 47:27I watched it again.
- 47:28I watched an interview for this film as well.
- 47:30Just him talking about how he wanted to portray this character
- 47:33who never felt anything but had this true love for this human.
- 47:38It's bad.
- 47:39No, I don't know.
- 47:40It's I can't tell if it's in a three-way tie or what?
- 47:45Oh, yeah.
- 47:45What are your three worst ones at this point at this moment?
- 47:48Oh, I just answered this.
- 47:50Well, the Schraders and then left behind.
- 47:53Oh, not for me.
- 47:54For me, it's left behind this and Bangkok Dangerous.
- 47:58We haven't gotten to Bangkok Dangerous yet.
- 47:59I've seen it and I know it's terrible.
- 48:03It's only in here because you thought it was funny to veto me saying don't put it in.
- 48:08Yeah, it is funny.
- 48:09It's you're not going to feel that way when you've seen the movie.
- 48:12Yeah, patrons, you get to listen to episode zero at some point.
- 48:15You can hear our logic on how we got here.
- 48:17I don't remember any of this question time.
- 48:20What was Nick Cage's next film?
- 48:23He was asked if all his time up on that girder filming that scene with Franz was was practice for Superman.
- 48:31He was actively being interviewed and questioned about Superman at this point.
- 48:35We all joke about it as if it was like this would have been a weird thing that happened.
- 48:38Forgetting that this was a big fucking deal when he was cast.
- 48:42This was prime Superman Cage.
- 48:44Yeah, well, they were starting to work up like costume tests and everything for that too.
- 48:48Yeah, I didn't realize it was at that that year, but this was kind of like the height of his.
- 48:53Yeah, this really was the peak and then there's the big dip coming up and then the resurgence.
- 49:01Yeah, so I do have one more quote from the interview for Kiss of Death.
- 49:06It was difficult for me because I was playing it in a much more constrained way than my natural way or inclination to perform.
- 49:14Like he's always been a weirdo and he knows he's actually like a fucking weirdo.
- 49:18That's fair. That's fine. I can respect that. I can respect it too.
- 49:20Like my assumption was just like all this weird energy, but he's always tried to be weird and I respect it so much more.
- 49:28So at this point guys, what wins the Kiss of Death?
- 49:33The Nick Cage movie or the movie starring David Caruso?
- 49:38Well, it's starring David Caruso, but he's like number three male billing.
- 49:43He did get the and. I mean, if you look at like screen time, it's Caruso, Jackson, Nicholas Cage.
- 49:51Oh, yeah. No, I mean, so is that the answer?
- 49:53Yeah, I mean one of them he pulls out a great performance.
- 49:56One of them he doesn't. He pulls out his meaty dork. He did get his dork out.
- 50:01Yeah. Okay, we're going to we're going to frame by frame this and we're going to see a modesty sock.
- 50:05I don't know. I think that was a dong.
- 50:09So a potential new segment this week in Cage, the Renfield.
- 50:13The Renfield trailer. Renfield trailer looks fucking awesome.
- 50:17I am so excited for this film. That's all I have to say about it right now.
- 50:20It's amazing. I forgot we were going to do this and I should have rewatched it.
- 50:24But Aquafina Holt, Harold Holt.
- 50:28No, Nicholas. Nicholas Holt. Harold Holt was Captain Holt.
- 50:31Captain. Oh, there's your connection.
- 50:33Ah, Andre Brower.
- 50:35Andre Brower. No, just I did not know what to expect to this film.
- 50:39I didn't realize this is going to be an action comedy.
- 50:41Oh, yeah. And oh, yeah.
- 50:43From all the photos and stuff of him, like walking around Top Hatty and stuff like that is like,
- 50:48what is this going to be? It's an action film.
- 50:52Yeah, it looks great. Take this.
- 50:53I can't my words are not wording.
- 50:57I don't know. I have a stroke.
- 50:59If you are, I wish you'd share.
- 51:02That's a masturbation joke.
- 51:04Give me a handy buddy. Goodbye, everybody.
- 51:08No, it looks fucking great.
- 51:09Nicholas Holt Renfield goes to a support group for people in bad relationships,
- 51:14trying to get some support and from a group from a group.
- 51:19And then it's like this guy controls my life and don't know.
- 51:25I I honestly don't know what's going on in my brain today.
- 51:28It's bad. I'm fucking you got the brains.
- 51:30Don't worry. I got a case of the brains, guys.
- 51:34You got to start drinking coffee before these.
- 51:36Yeah, don't drink the Sparkle buddies.
- 51:38Well, do both. Yeah.
- 51:39Oh, put them together.
- 51:41We talked about switching to four local.
- 51:42Actually, I suggested it and Sean said no, like the classic four local.
- 51:46Can you still get it? No, but you can get what they have.
- 51:50I told you about my four local experience.
- 51:52Please do now.
- 51:55So back when I was working in a bar, I was working in the kitchen
- 51:58and it was at the time when four local got, you know, put down
- 52:03and our rep from the alcohol distributor came through
- 52:09and he was just like, oh, here's this and that.
- 52:12Here's all your stuff.
- 52:13And do you guys want like some four local because I can't sell them anymore.
- 52:18We were like me and the kitchen manager were just standing there.
- 52:21We're like, fuck. Yeah.
- 52:22So he brings us like four flats of four local.
- 52:26So you direct them over a camping weekend, right?
- 52:28No, we proceeded to throw a house party that night.
- 52:31And like the kitchen managers doing trust falls off of his roof
- 52:35because he's so jacked up on these things.
- 52:38It was just awesome.
- 52:40I'm pretty sure there was people like punching each other in the face
- 52:43just to see if they could feel a new page around here.
- 52:46We can get over $200 a month.
- 52:48We'll do a bunch of four local and record a podcast.
- 52:51That's fair. I think that's a reasonable thing.
- 52:53So nothing else on either of these movies.
- 52:56I enjoy a romp.
- 52:57I enjoy a caper.
- 52:58And I got that from Kiss of Death, even though it was kind of like
- 53:00it felt more like a made for TV movie or that's a perfect way to
- 53:04extend an episode of like NYPD Blue.
- 53:08I was real disappointed in David Caruso when he said that
- 53:11boosting a car in 90 seconds was a good thing.
- 53:1460 seconds. That's all we need.
- 53:16I have one more thing to say about Kiss of Death.
- 53:19Omar apparently has a phobia of the color red.
- 53:23It's his bad luck color.
- 53:24That's actually my favorite Caruso response was when Little Jr.
- 53:30is like, what about you?
- 53:32You got a problem with the color red and Caruso is just like walking
- 53:35away is like, what do I look like a fucking interior designer?
- 53:37I don't give a shit what color it is.
- 53:39It's like awesome.
- 53:41That is the fucking best response.
- 53:43Yeah, like who fucking cares?
- 53:45It's a fucking car.
- 53:46Next time we've got in the fucking weird zone, Vampire's Kiss
- 53:50and Between Worlds, we will have guests for that episode and the one
- 53:54following and then back to just the three of us for a little bit.
- 53:58Is this the episode where you learn about the alphabet?
- 54:00Yes.
- 54:01Yes.
- 54:02So we've learned acronyms and now we'll learn the alphabet.
- 54:05Yep.
- 54:06We got it.
- 54:06Beautiful.
- 54:07But yeah, you know, thank you for listening.
- 54:09Please rate, review, subscribe.
