- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yr
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 2: Millennials who want financial freedom. Today, my friends, it is Friday,
- 1:04Speaker 2: which means we actually have gotten the team back together
- 1:08Speaker 2: and we are here to celebrate you our incredible She's
- 1:11Speaker 2: on the Money community today, Miss Jess Gottria. She's going
- 1:14Speaker 2: to be sharing our favorite money wins. We've got Becksaed
- 1:17Speaker 2: on board to share her best to broke tips. We're
- 1:19Speaker 2: going to be helping to answer a juicy money dilemma,
- 1:21Speaker 2: which this week is all about Medicare rebates and we're
- 1:24Speaker 2: going to be unpacking something you slid into our DMS
- 1:27Speaker 2: about buying gifts in relationships, which I think can be
- 1:31Speaker 2: a little bit of a fun topic. I can't wait
- 1:33Speaker 2: to see what the community has said. But before we
- 1:35Speaker 2: get there, Jessica, Hello, are you feeling better?
- 1:39Speaker 4: I am.
- 1:40Speaker 5: The flu knocked me for six, but that's okay. I'm
- 1:43Speaker 5: back and better than ever.
- 1:45Speaker 2: My favorite thing about that is that you just were
- 1:47Speaker 2: refusing to let it get you down. You were like, oh,
- 1:50Speaker 2: can you jump on zoom? And I'm like, no, you
- 1:52Speaker 2: need to go to bed. And You're like, I just
- 1:54Speaker 2: really want to do this one thing. And I'm like, okay,
- 1:56Speaker 2: no worries, let's do this one thing. And then I'm like,
- 1:59Speaker 2: you look like you died. Go to bed.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I don't do well with not being able to do anything.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I get that. I'm the same, But as
- 2:08Speaker 2: your employer, I think it's important that I push you
- 2:11Speaker 2: to go back to bed. It just feels so irresponsible
- 2:15Speaker 2: to be on a zoom with someone who is unwell.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I'm like, go to bed. It's very sweet of you.
- 2:21Speaker 2: It's not even about the business. I just feel guilty.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Back, Yeah, that's fair.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Why are you doing this. Please, it doesn't matter. So
- 2:27Speaker 2: you're better, You're back on board. This is very good.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Ed.
- 2:31Speaker 2: How has your week been? Did you like doing an
- 2:33Speaker 2: episode without Jeff's I no, I didn't.
- 2:35Speaker 7: Like it out with you one on one good safe,
- 2:39Speaker 7: But I love when the three of us.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I think the three of us make the episode. Yeah,
- 2:44Speaker 2: I think it's way better with Jesse here, so much better.
- 2:48Speaker 2: We just went broke. There was nobody to keep us
- 2:50Speaker 2: in mind, tell us stop stopped. We will like block
- 2:56Speaker 2: her out, block her out. But when you're on, mica
- 3:00Speaker 2: into shape.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yes, exactly, in a kind gentle way.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So we've had good weeks? Have we really good week?
- 3:08Speaker 2: Good to hear. I'm very excited. Let's dive straight in.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I really want to know, miss Jess. I got to
- 3:15Speaker 2: do this last week and it was actually so much fun.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I was kind of like, oh, hope just isn't around
- 3:20Speaker 2: this week, so I get to do it again. But
- 3:22Speaker 2: what were your favorite money wins and confessions from the
- 3:24Speaker 2: community this week.
- 3:25Speaker 5: My first money win this week comes from Aaron, who
- 3:28Speaker 5: said money win, I wanted cocktail glasses for my Tea
- 3:31Speaker 5: Swizzle birthday party on Saturday.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Your GCE is a birthday.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Very tempted to buy the Kmart glasses, but sixteen dollars
- 3:37Speaker 5: for four was a no. So I went to the
- 3:39Speaker 5: op shop and I got six glasses for four dollars
- 3:42Speaker 5: and another six for six dollars.
- 3:44Speaker 4: So she got you win twelve for ten dollars.
- 3:47Speaker 6: WHOA, that's so good.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Good quick math ado not the fastest, but we got there,
- 3:51Speaker 5: and well we did it.
- 3:52Speaker 6: We got there.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Speaking about getting there, I really don't think my invite
- 3:57Speaker 2: to the Tea Swizzle party got there.
- 3:58Speaker 4: No, get them, Mustard must miss my inbox.
- 4:04Speaker 2: What do you think people? Do you dress up at
- 4:05Speaker 2: a tea Swizzle birthday party?
- 4:07Speaker 4: Surely?
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:07Speaker 4: Sure, you pick your favorite error or your favorite outfit.
- 4:10Speaker 6: What's tea Swizzle?
- 4:12Speaker 2: Wait? Sorry, I was Are you done?
- 4:17Speaker 5: Ignore me?
- 4:18Speaker 7: Actually immediately you're Both of your faces were kind of scary.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Do it?
- 4:23Speaker 7: Literally stopped and turned very slowly towards me.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I thought she was doing it, bade us. I did
- 4:30Speaker 2: realize it was a bit.
- 4:32Speaker 6: I wish it was a bit.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Be Yes, you literally work for a radio.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Swizzled Tea Swizzle tea pain wrapping on the same.
- 4:40Speaker 6: Track now we're talking about Taylor Swift.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Definitely Okay, she's onto it. You know what's slower than
- 4:46Speaker 2: Chess's quick mass you what else you got?
- 4:51Speaker 5: Next, I've got a win from Karen, who said, after
- 4:54Speaker 5: binging and starting my shoes and the money journey, I
- 4:56Speaker 5: paid off my after pay.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Congrats and welcome to the family.
- 5:00Speaker 5: I also figured out what I want to be when
- 5:03Speaker 5: I grow up after a lifetime of being indecisive.
- 5:05Speaker 2: How cool. That's actually the best win ever. That's a
- 5:08Speaker 2: life win.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Yeah, and now I'm really curious. So Karen, please ri
- 5:10Speaker 5: prop back please. Next, I've got a money win from
- 5:13Speaker 5: a character.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Was it Karen? She wants to be the manager car
- 5:18Speaker 2: o n Okay, oh, she wants to be She doesn't
- 5:21Speaker 2: want to be the manager.
- 5:22Speaker 6: She doesn't want to be that.
- 5:23Speaker 2: She probably wants to be zoologist.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Something you fancy that?
- 5:26Speaker 2: Moving on.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Next, money whin I've got is from Amanda, who said,
- 5:29Speaker 5: I finally gave in and took my sixteen year old
- 5:31Speaker 5: op shopping walked out with a Robovac for fifty dollars.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That's a money win.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Purchased a replacement filter pack with new brush rollers and
- 5:39Speaker 4: stuff for one hundred and now I'm the proud owner
- 5:41Speaker 4: of what would have cost almost six hundred dollars for
- 5:43Speaker 4: the same model.
- 5:43Speaker 2: That's a money wow. That is a great win. That
- 5:46Speaker 2: is a great robot fact will change your life. My
- 5:48Speaker 2: name's like my robovac. Its name's Jeeves, and like Jeeves
- 5:52Speaker 2: is quite dramatic.
- 5:53Speaker 4: But she remember we stuck googly eyes on it?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, like really big one was I meant to take
- 5:59Speaker 2: them off?
- 6:02Speaker 4: I will find you.
- 6:03Speaker 2: There's a whole video of the Instagram.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it's very funny.
- 6:07Speaker 5: I'll show you after next I've got a money win
- 6:09Speaker 5: from Linda, who said I'm a third year nursing student
- 6:12Speaker 5: and currently on my last placement. Parking at the hospital
- 6:15Speaker 5: is expensive. There is a concession and student rate. Normally
- 6:19Speaker 5: parking would cost twenty five dollars for eight hours. For
- 6:22Speaker 5: the public concession is only eight. I also ended up
- 6:25Speaker 5: getting free parking one day because my Apple pay got
- 6:28Speaker 5: declined and I rang for assistance, and after what felt
- 6:30Speaker 5: like five minutes of delay, the security guy just let
- 6:33Speaker 5: me go.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Oh that's a money win. But also, are you joking
- 6:38Speaker 2: you as a baby nurse. No, but like you should
- 6:40Speaker 2: not be paying for parking. You already are doing so
- 6:43Speaker 2: many hours of unpaid work and now you also have
- 6:47Speaker 2: to pay for parking. You have to pay for the
- 6:49Speaker 2: privilege in the bin. I have so many thoughts about that.
- 6:52Speaker 2: We should do a whole episode, Jess about the system
- 6:56Speaker 2: that I do not believe in paid unpaid Sorry intern
- 6:59Speaker 2: shep h unpaid placements because in twenty twenty three that
- 7:03Speaker 2: I knew there's such privilege in it. Like what if
- 7:06Speaker 2: people want to become a nurse, but you moved out
- 7:08Speaker 2: of home at sixteen and don't have the capacity to,
- 7:10Speaker 2: you know, go and do unpaid work because it's just
- 7:13Speaker 2: not within the breadth of your budget.
- 7:15Speaker 6: One hundred and.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Twenty bucks if you're working five days a week just
- 7:17Speaker 4: on parking.
- 7:18Speaker 8: That's insane.
- 7:20Speaker 2: That's insane, and you have to meet a certain amount
- 7:22Speaker 2: of Anyway, we're not going to even get there.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Don't get on the rant off, get off the ram
- 7:26Speaker 4: train and save it for later.
- 7:27Speaker 2: That is not a deep dive episode, Victoria.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Next, I've got money in from Brook who said I
- 7:31Speaker 5: used shop back to buy two hundred dollars in vouchers
- 7:33Speaker 5: for the Iconic as a gift to myself. Gen U
- 7:36Speaker 5: shot back earnings entirely to pay for them, and then
- 7:39Speaker 5: I made twenty bucks.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Cash back on my purchase.
- 7:41Speaker 5: It's great, gamed the system incredible. And lastly, I have
- 7:47Speaker 5: a money win from Natalie who said I took my
- 7:49Speaker 5: parents out for Italian for Father's Day dinner. We didn't
- 7:52Speaker 5: order dessert. We grabbed eighty cent macis cones on the
- 7:54Speaker 5: drive home instead. Biggest serving ever. And I wanted to
- 7:57Speaker 5: bring this to your attention because Natalie gave us a phone.
- 8:00Speaker 5: It's chocolate and vanilla in one I'm sorry, what cool
- 8:04Speaker 5: they the tone?
- 8:05Speaker 4: Did anybody else know that this?
- 8:07Speaker 1: Know?
- 8:08Speaker 2: I don't know where that is either, because the cones
- 8:10Speaker 2: near my house are like a dollar. So what in
- 8:13Speaker 2: the money win?
- 8:14Speaker 4: I don't know, but I need someone to tell me.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Is this thing?
- 8:18Speaker 2: They now have chocolate soft serve and this has just
- 8:20Speaker 2: gone above our heads.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Well, and this one is chocolate vanilla swelled together.
- 8:23Speaker 2: The jess is like, I need them both. I don't
- 8:25Speaker 2: just need a chocolate. Do you remember chocolate from Wendy's?
- 8:28Speaker 2: Oh my god, Wendy's was so od. That was the
- 8:30Speaker 2: best ice cream. I don't know, So you remember Wendy's
- 8:34Speaker 2: the hot dogs?
- 8:35Speaker 6: Yes?
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yes, yes, They used to have like a soft serve
- 8:38Speaker 2: machine and it was like I think it was like
- 8:40Speaker 2: I think it was marketed as like a diet ice
- 8:42Speaker 2: cream chocolate. Yeah, we don't stand diet ice cream, but
- 8:47Speaker 2: I think it was marketed as like a lower fat
- 8:50Speaker 2: option and so like the mums are around it. But
- 8:54Speaker 2: I was obsessed chocolate, full stop, end of story. I
- 8:58Speaker 2: don't care how calories it does or doesn't have. Of like,
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm there for the chocolate soft serves.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Seriously incredible and that's my last money win for them.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I love that. Thank you for that. I feel like
- 9:06Speaker 2: I'm inspired.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Drive through on the way home.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I mean, I am planning on getting some sneaky chippies
- 9:13Speaker 2: because I deserve them.
- 9:15Speaker 4: You do.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Everybody deserves some sneaky mac is chippy. Absolutely, They're not
- 9:19Speaker 2: a money win though, Beck. Yes, what have you got
- 9:22Speaker 2: this week for your broke tips?
- 9:23Speaker 7: Okay, strap in, Oh, actually nothing super exciting.
- 9:27Speaker 6: I'm sorry to get your hopes up, but I would
- 9:30Speaker 6: say very useful.
- 9:32Speaker 2: So that's the best kind of broke tip.
- 9:35Speaker 7: Let's feel honest, best kind of broke tip. My first
- 9:37Speaker 7: broke tip for this week comes from Emily, who has
- 9:40Speaker 7: said for those with babies, there are lots of free
- 9:42Speaker 7: things to do with babies. Run by the library's council's
- 9:45Speaker 7: community centers to take babies too, like sing time, playgroups,
- 9:48Speaker 7: baby massage courses that are sometimes one hundred and fifty
- 9:51Speaker 7: dollars privately.
- 9:52Speaker 2: That's kind of cool, is really cool. I didn't even
- 9:54Speaker 2: know that was the thing. But you can alway because
- 9:56Speaker 2: noone at this table has babies.
- 9:57Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly, but still for anyone listening who does have
- 10:00Speaker 7: little babies, but basically the council pays for them. It's
- 10:03Speaker 7: a great way to meet new parent friends or go
- 10:05Speaker 7: with friends instead of going to a brunch or something
- 10:08Speaker 7: that's more expensive. And it really smart to get out
- 10:10Speaker 7: of the house while on parental leave when the money
- 10:12Speaker 7: is often tight.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, because if you're on parental leave, you're either being unpaid,
- 10:17Speaker 2: like you're maybe down to one income or have unpaid
- 10:20Speaker 2: leave completely, or maybe you're like on half pay or
- 10:23Speaker 2: something and money is tight. And what you forget is
- 10:26Speaker 2: that like nappies and baby basics are actually really expensive
- 10:30Speaker 2: and do eat into your budget totally. Do you know
- 10:32Speaker 2: a hack obviously complete side note a hack that one
- 10:35Speaker 2: of my girlfriends did recently at a baby shower, and
- 10:37Speaker 2: I just thought it was so smart so they didn't
- 10:40Speaker 2: find out the gender they were having like a baby
- 10:41Speaker 2: shower that was also the gender reveal, and they said,
- 10:44Speaker 2: bring wipes if you think it's a boy, and bring
- 10:46Speaker 2: nappies if you think it's a girl. That's great. So
- 10:49Speaker 2: she like got to stock up on all these basics
- 10:51Speaker 2: she actually needed instead of like six million qued outfits,
- 10:55Speaker 2: which I guarantee she's already bought and I already bought
- 10:58Speaker 2: for her, so she didn't need outfits, but she definitely
- 11:01Speaker 2: needed nappies and she definitely needed wipes.
- 11:03Speaker 6: And I was like, Yeah, that's very clever.
- 11:06Speaker 2: So that's my that's my input to the broke tip.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I ask for what you need?
- 11:10Speaker 7: Is it ask for you need to exactly you have
- 11:13Speaker 7: a little registry.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I think that's smart.
- 11:15Speaker 6: I love that.
- 11:16Speaker 7: My second broke tip this week comes from Nicole, who says,
- 11:18Speaker 7: buy Wooly salads when they are on sale for once
- 11:21Speaker 7: two dollars on Friday afternoons. They are still fine for
- 11:24Speaker 7: a few days for lunches and dinners over the weekend
- 11:26Speaker 7: and to start off your work week, and they are
- 11:28Speaker 7: a quarter of the price as well, so that's pretty cool.
- 11:31Speaker 6: I didn't even know they did that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Good to know what day well, actually, yeah, to know
- 11:34Speaker 2: that it's like a Friday. It might be different for
- 11:37Speaker 2: different locations, but maybe have a snoop. Also, shopping close
- 11:41Speaker 2: to nine pm when they do their mark downs is
- 11:43Speaker 2: a good time.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Sweeping and gather the deals.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Do you know what else is really good that I've
- 11:47Speaker 2: learned recently from TikTok. I feel like all I do
- 11:49Speaker 2: is talk about TikTok on this podcast. This is basically
- 11:52Speaker 2: she's on TikTok, not she's on the money. Is you
- 11:55Speaker 2: can buy those cheap salad mixes, but if you get
- 11:57Speaker 2: the coal slaw one, you can just use it in
- 11:59Speaker 2: a stir FRYE. It's like the stir fry based because
- 12:03Speaker 2: obviously like cabbage and carrot and all of that stuff
- 12:05Speaker 2: you put in a stir fry. Like, if it's so
- 12:08Speaker 2: much down, there's your sturfry for real cheap.
- 12:13Speaker 6: That's clever.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Kay.
- 12:14Speaker 2: What have you got though? What's your actual broke tip?
- 12:16Speaker 2: Because I feel like I've interrupted with a few sneaky
- 12:18Speaker 2: ones this week? Sorry not sorry?
- 12:21Speaker 6: So my one for this week is, have you guys
- 12:23Speaker 6: heard of E Club? It's an app? No, it's like
- 12:26Speaker 6: a it, yes, but.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I can't remember what they do.
- 12:30Speaker 6: That's fair.
- 12:30Speaker 7: Sorry, well I actually hadn't heard of it, but my
- 12:32Speaker 7: friend was telling me about how she went to It's
- 12:35Speaker 7: basically an app where you can search like locations around
- 12:38Speaker 7: your restaurants, foody sort of places, and see what kind
- 12:41Speaker 7: of deals they've got going on. You might be able
- 12:43Speaker 7: to find a fifty percent off whole meal or whatever
- 12:46Speaker 7: you've got. You have a little peruse on the app
- 12:49Speaker 7: if you're wanting to go out. It's more so like
- 12:51Speaker 7: you're broke, but you're not too broke that you can't
- 12:54Speaker 7: go out with mates, but you still want to not
- 12:56Speaker 7: spend too much money. That's going to club, Find what's
- 12:59Speaker 7: around you, see what's cheap, see what's on special last
- 13:02Speaker 7: minute deals, and you might find yourself a very cheap,
- 13:06Speaker 7: affordable night out.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Love that now. I think that's genius. I am a
- 13:10Speaker 2: little bit disappointed that you weren't going to tell us
- 13:12Speaker 2: there was a club that existed purely for eating. Like
- 13:14Speaker 2: there's chest. Yeah, like just like Boots and all In.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I mean we steal Boots and all In, just in
- 13:20Speaker 2: a different way. The excitement is quite different.
- 13:23Speaker 6: Yeah, that's fair, But I.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Think that's really cool. Yeah, it's really cool.
- 13:27Speaker 6: So download it right now so.
- 13:29Speaker 2: You can just save money when you were already going
- 13:31Speaker 2: to catch up and go out with friends.
- 13:32Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Money in all right, let's go to a really quick
- 13:35Speaker 2: break because on the flip side, we have a juicier topic.
- 13:38Speaker 2: And when I say juicy, I don't mean like juicy
- 13:40Speaker 2: like a steak. No, I don't mean, you see, like
- 13:42Speaker 2: a steak. I mean like it's probably going to be
- 13:44Speaker 2: a bit meaty. So I want to like leave enough
- 13:47Speaker 2: time to talk about it because we're talking about Medicare rebates,
- 13:50Speaker 2: and then we're also going to be unpacking a DM
- 13:53Speaker 2: that you guys wanted us to chat about on the show.
- 13:56Speaker 2: This week, we're talking buying gifts in relationships. So don't
- 13:59Speaker 2: go anywhere. We will be right back.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 14:08Speaker 4: money dilemma.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 14:13Speaker 2: can't solve? The Sheese on the Money Team is here
- 14:15Speaker 2: to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 14:18Speaker 2: and small, to answer your most burning money, career and
- 14:21Speaker 2: life questions. To get involved, simply head to our website
- 14:24Speaker 2: and leave us a short voice recording and you might
- 14:27Speaker 2: just find yourself on the show. Now, let's take a
- 14:29Speaker 2: listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 14:34Speaker 8: Hey, girls, I was just wondering if you understand the
- 14:39Speaker 8: Medicare safety net threshold. I've currently just had an overwhelming
- 14:44Speaker 8: amount of medical bills all come at the same time
- 14:47Speaker 8: due to multiple injuries and illnesses, and you know, when
- 14:52Speaker 8: it rains, it pause, it seems. But yeah, I'm just
- 14:54Speaker 8: wondering if you know much about the Medicare safety net
- 14:57Speaker 8: threshold and how I can and sort of try and
- 15:01Speaker 8: get some money back or save where I can with
- 15:04Speaker 8: all of these upcoming expenses such as specialists and GP
- 15:09Speaker 8: appointments and scans and everything like that.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Thank you, This is a good one. Either of you
- 15:15Speaker 2: know anything about the Medicare rebate thresholds.
- 15:17Speaker 5: I've literally never heard of it. But I do want
- 15:19Speaker 5: to say that I hope that you're doing okay. But
- 15:21Speaker 5: you sound stressed, and I can understand how if you've
- 15:23Speaker 5: had a lot of health stuff going on, the last
- 15:25Speaker 5: thing you want to be doing is thinking about your
- 15:27Speaker 5: finances as well. So I just hope you're doing okay
- 15:30Speaker 5: and that your health is sticking along all right.
- 15:32Speaker 6: Yes, I do agree, I feel the same way. I
- 15:34Speaker 6: hope that you're doing Okay.
- 15:35Speaker 7: I don't know if this is relevant, and obviously I
- 15:37Speaker 7: don't have any advice at all. But if you use
- 15:40Speaker 7: health engine or like hot doc or something, you can find.
- 15:43Speaker 6: Bulk billing places around you. So I don't know if
- 15:45Speaker 6: it's useful.
- 15:46Speaker 7: I don't actually depends on what kind of appointment, who
- 15:49Speaker 7: you're trying to see, etcetera, etcetera.
- 15:50Speaker 6: But you can kind of like filter your search that way.
- 15:53Speaker 6: That's it from me. I feel like we should go
- 15:54Speaker 6: to the expert in the room.
- 15:56Speaker 2: O great, I mean I had to look this up.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I don't know what the thresholds are, but they're are
- 16:00Speaker 2: a number of numbers we are going to discuss. So essentially,
- 16:02Speaker 2: Medicare safety nets do have thresholds. So when you essentially
- 16:06Speaker 2: spend a certain amount in gap and out of pocket
- 16:09Speaker 2: costs on medical you're going to reach a threshold at
- 16:12Speaker 2: some point. So once you've reached the threshold, you're actually
- 16:15Speaker 2: going to start getting higher benefits from Medicare because they're like, oh,
- 16:19Speaker 2: stuff's really hitting the fan here. We need to give
- 16:22Speaker 2: just a bit more help in this circumstance. And this
- 16:25Speaker 2: means that you'll essentially get more money back from Medicare,
- 16:28Speaker 2: So like that's a good thing. Yeah, I think I
- 16:31Speaker 2: thought it would be the other way. I was going
- 16:32Speaker 2: to say, you guys might have assumed that once you
- 16:35Speaker 2: reach a threshold, it's going to get more expensive because
- 16:37Speaker 2: you're no longer covered. No, it's actually the opposite. A
- 16:40Speaker 2: safety net exists to go, oh my gosh, you've been
- 16:43Speaker 2: scooped up in an illness and this is all consuming
- 16:46Speaker 2: and overwhelming. It's the government's way of going, we can't
- 16:49Speaker 2: offer super super discounts to absolutely everybody, so we'll just
- 16:52Speaker 2: do the normal Medicare rebates for everybody. But if everything
- 16:56Speaker 2: is going really badly and you reach your threshold, that
- 17:00Speaker 2: then means that you're going to get a little bit
- 17:02Speaker 2: of extra support, which is definitely well needed at that
- 17:05Speaker 2: point in time. Right, it can be really confusing, and
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think that that's where this question is coming from.
- 17:12Speaker 2: I don't know if you're coming from a position where
- 17:15Speaker 2: you know once you hit that threshold it's going to
- 17:17Speaker 2: actually ramp up what you get back, or if you're
- 17:20Speaker 2: worried that a threshold means it's going to get more expensive.
- 17:22Speaker 2: So that's why I wanted to kind of be like,
- 17:24Speaker 2: this is what this means. So essentially, only verified payments
- 17:29Speaker 2: contribute towards that threshold, so you'll have to talk to
- 17:33Speaker 2: Medicare about what that means and how that works. But essentially,
- 17:36Speaker 2: you know, if you're just going to get a remedial
- 17:37Speaker 2: massage down the road and you think that's going to contribute,
- 17:40Speaker 2: it might not. It might be things like the PBS,
- 17:43Speaker 2: so the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, so medications, you know, genuine
- 17:47Speaker 2: hospital check ins. It might be very real things that
- 17:51Speaker 2: are a bit more than a remedial massage. And I'm
- 17:53Speaker 2: not saying that because they are definitely excluded. This is
- 17:56Speaker 2: something where please rely on the Medicare team. Call them,
- 18:00Speaker 2: talk to them, give them a buzz and be like,
- 18:02Speaker 2: what's this mean? What's included? How does it work? Like
- 18:04Speaker 2: what happens when I hit the threshold? Like do we
- 18:06Speaker 2: communicate that? How do I ask for more back? Obviously
- 18:10Speaker 2: all of this is actually managed through your mygove portal online.
- 18:14Speaker 2: We love, actually's on the money, the mygove portal because
- 18:16Speaker 2: it's just so easy to use. But if you haven't
- 18:18Speaker 2: already set it up for Medicare, please do because it
- 18:21Speaker 2: will enable you to make sure that for every appointment
- 18:24Speaker 2: that you're getting, you're actually getting your cash back. And
- 18:26Speaker 2: in a circumstance like this, you want to make sure
- 18:29Speaker 2: that you know things aren't slipping through the cracks. And
- 18:31Speaker 2: if you have a medical expense, and you know, the
- 18:34Speaker 2: receptionist at the doctor's surgery said, oh, Beck, don't worry, like,
- 18:37Speaker 2: we'll process the Medicare for you. What if it doesn't happen?
- 18:39Speaker 2: Like those small things can add up when you're going
- 18:42Speaker 2: to the doctors all the time, and I mean they're
- 18:44Speaker 2: usually pretty regular, but you do want to stay on
- 18:47Speaker 2: top of it. So the amounts that are contributing towards
- 18:50Speaker 2: the threshold they change on the first of January every
- 18:53Speaker 2: single year. It's important to note that because I think
- 18:56Speaker 2: a lot of people line up anything through their Mygove
- 18:59Speaker 2: portal with tax you and just assume that, oh, it
- 19:02Speaker 2: must be mid year. It's not. It's the first of
- 19:04Speaker 2: January each and every single year. And the twenty twenty
- 19:07Speaker 2: three Medicare Safety Net thresholds are as follows my friend.
- 19:11Speaker 2: So the original Medicare Safety Net threshold or the OMSN,
- 19:16Speaker 2: which would appear on the portals as is five hundred
- 19:19Speaker 2: and thirty one dollars seventy who's at four. Absolutely everyone
- 19:23Speaker 2: who uses Medicare counts towards the threshold your gap amount
- 19:27Speaker 2: for the calendar year, and what benefit are you going
- 19:30Speaker 2: to get. You're going to get one hundred percent of
- 19:32Speaker 2: the scheduled fee for out of hospital services, so that's
- 19:36Speaker 2: a bit of a money win. Then there's extended Medicare
- 19:40Speaker 2: Safety Net, so that's when your fees start to really
- 19:42Speaker 2: add up. So that's twenty four hundred and fourteen dollars. Again,
- 19:47Speaker 2: that benefits everybody who's in Medicare. Everyone. When I say
- 19:51Speaker 2: everyone who's in Medicare, that's usually Australian residents and Australian citizens.
- 19:55Speaker 2: If you're not an Australian resident or citizen, you might
- 19:58Speaker 2: not have access to Medicare, and that's often one of
- 20:01Speaker 2: the benefits of becoming a citizen of Australia, right. So
- 20:04Speaker 2: what contributes towards that your out of pocket amount for
- 20:08Speaker 2: the calendar years, so again from the first of January
- 20:11Speaker 2: and what are you going to get back? It then
- 20:13Speaker 2: drops down, so then eighty percent of out of pocket
- 20:16Speaker 2: costs or the EMSN benefit caps for out of hospital services.
- 20:22Speaker 2: That obviously is going to change again. If you are
- 20:24Speaker 2: on a concessional or family benefit tax that amount is
- 20:28Speaker 2: seven hundred and seventy dollars and thirty cents And that's
- 20:31Speaker 2: essentially for concession cardholders and families who are eligible for
- 20:34Speaker 2: the Family tax benefit Part A. Jessica, I know your
- 20:38Speaker 2: eyes are glazed over. I'm sorry. This is really important. Again,
- 20:41Speaker 2: the same thing contributes towards it, and that's eighty percent
- 20:44Speaker 2: of the out of pocket costs of the EMSM benefits
- 20:47Speaker 2: caps for out of hospital services. So I think it's
- 20:51Speaker 2: important to understand these caps and what they mean. Essentially,
- 20:54Speaker 2: the safety nets exists to put you in the best
- 20:56Speaker 2: possible position and make sure that you're a wi of
- 21:00Speaker 2: when you'll be getting more money back for your Medicare services.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I guess a Medicare benefit is the dollar amount that
- 21:07Speaker 2: they pay when you make a claim for a medical service.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Usually it's between eighty five to one hundred percent of
- 21:13Speaker 2: the scheduled fee. And a scheduled fee is the dollar
- 21:16Speaker 2: amount that the Australian government sets. That is not what
- 21:19Speaker 2: your doctor charges though, so you need to be really
- 21:22Speaker 2: clear on what the difference is. So you know how
- 21:24Speaker 2: we talk about like bulk billing versus not bulk billing.
- 21:27Speaker 2: If the scheduled fee, let's just say, is one hundred dollars,
- 21:30Speaker 2: but your doctor charges one hundred and fifty dollars, that
- 21:32Speaker 2: doesn't cover the gap. So you need to be really
- 21:35Speaker 2: clear about that. And that's something where if your medical
- 21:37Speaker 2: fees are starting to really add up. Something I would
- 21:41Speaker 2: do is if you're seeing a GP or you're seeing
- 21:43Speaker 2: a specialist regularly sit down and go, hey, this is
- 21:47Speaker 2: getting really expensive. I'm going to have to consistently utilize
- 21:51Speaker 2: your services. What can I do to either make my
- 21:54Speaker 2: appointments a little bit shorter so that I'm not paying
- 21:57Speaker 2: as much? Like, is there you know a way that
- 21:59Speaker 2: we can cut the small chat getting get out, I
- 22:02Speaker 2: get the tests, maybe you email me scripts or something.
- 22:04Speaker 2: What can we do or at what point are you
- 22:08Speaker 2: able to bulk build me for this so that there
- 22:10Speaker 2: isn't an out of pocket cost. I think in these
- 22:13Speaker 2: circumstances it's really awful. It really sucks. But communication is
- 22:17Speaker 2: going to be the key. Communicate with your doctor and
- 22:21Speaker 2: most of them are going to be pretty understanding because
- 22:23Speaker 2: they know that during a period of time where you're
- 22:25Speaker 2: really sick, you're probably not working that often, and things
- 22:28Speaker 2: are going to be a little bit tighter because no one,
- 22:31Speaker 2: you know, we've all got hopefully we've got or we're
- 22:34Speaker 2: working towards, or we are aspiring to have emergency funds,
- 22:37Speaker 2: but not many of us are going to have twenty
- 22:39Speaker 2: five hundred bucks sitting in an account for when we
- 22:42Speaker 2: get sick, Like that's not that common. I know we've got,
- 22:45Speaker 2: you know, maybe three months worth of our expenses, but
- 22:47Speaker 2: we don't have three months worth of medical expenses. So
- 22:50Speaker 2: I think it's just about making sure that we understand
- 22:53Speaker 2: what our fees are. You can obviously search what a
- 22:56Speaker 2: scheduled fee should be on their MSB, so that's all
- 23:00Speaker 2: the website. You can access that through the MyGov website.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And actually, you know, every session in doctor's appointment will
- 23:07Speaker 2: actually have what's called an item number, so you can
- 23:09Speaker 2: look that item number up and see what that fee
- 23:12Speaker 2: should be, and you could even negotiate with your doctor
- 23:14Speaker 2: and go, hey, what can we do? How can this work? Like,
- 23:17Speaker 2: you know, if things are getting really expensive, maybe transfer
- 23:20Speaker 2: to a different doctor who does bog bill. It's not
- 23:23Speaker 2: the most helpful because obviously medical costs are something that
- 23:26Speaker 2: you can't really get out of but I think open
- 23:30Speaker 2: clear communication where possible, building up your emergency fund so
- 23:33Speaker 2: you're not so financially stressed and just putting yourself first. Again,
- 23:37Speaker 2: this is a season, it is not forever, hopefully.
- 23:40Speaker 5: If you have more questions about medihair and if you
- 23:42Speaker 5: qualify for those different caps or where you're sitting or
- 23:45Speaker 5: the breakdown or anything like that, you can contact Services
- 23:47Speaker 5: Australia directly on their website. You can email them or
- 23:50Speaker 5: you can call them and they should be able to
- 23:51Speaker 5: answer your questions.
- 23:52Speaker 2: They have a very good website to be honest, just
- 23:54Speaker 2: really clean, really clear. They'll you know, have a number
- 23:57Speaker 2: of questions. Often I google Service is Australia and then
- 24:01Speaker 2: the question I have and it will automatically come up
- 24:03Speaker 2: with the page that I'm looking for instead of like
- 24:06Speaker 2: you know, going through the whole website. But yeah, that's
- 24:08Speaker 2: where I would be. I'm so sorry that you're not
- 24:10Speaker 2: well and it's just a really not fun period to
- 24:13Speaker 2: be in. But the safety net is there to protect
- 24:16Speaker 2: you and the best thing you can do is get
- 24:18Speaker 2: in contact with medicare and be like, at what point
- 24:20Speaker 2: do I hit this? How does this work? What happens
- 24:22Speaker 2: when I go over it, what happens here, here, and here,
- 24:25Speaker 2: and they're probably going to have some really helpful tips
- 24:27Speaker 2: and tricks because they do this every day.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Sending lots of love. Yeah, that's very key.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we hope you're all right. That sucks does all right,
- 24:36Speaker 2: Let's pivot, Let's move because there's no good segue from that.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Let's move on to the other topic that we've got
- 24:42Speaker 2: to talk about this week. You slid into our DMS
- 24:45Speaker 2: about a spicy topic. I don't know if it's that spicy,
- 24:48Speaker 2: but it's something we should definitely talk about. Because my
- 24:50Speaker 2: partner and I are never on the same page about this.
- 24:52Speaker 2: We try, we try again, and then we don't do
- 24:54Speaker 2: anything about it. So we're talking this week about buying
- 24:57Speaker 2: gifts in relationships. And here's the DM we receive. Hello you,
- 25:01Speaker 2: lovely people. I'm after your opinion on buying gifts and relationships.
- 25:05Speaker 2: My partner buys me such extravagant gifts, but I don't
- 25:08Speaker 2: spend nearly as much on them. They are more of
- 25:10Speaker 2: a splash cash kind of person, whereas I'm a strict saver,
- 25:14Speaker 2: whilst they are on a higher income. It just doesn't
- 25:17Speaker 2: sit right with my money. Values to spend so much
- 25:19Speaker 2: on materialistic things, and I rather that they save their money.
- 25:23Speaker 2: But how am I meant to tell them that when
- 25:25Speaker 2: they're trying to do something really lovely for me? It
- 25:28Speaker 2: just makes me feel super guilty, and then I feel
- 25:30Speaker 2: more pressure to spend more money on them. Do you
- 25:33Speaker 2: think that introducing a spending limit for presents is a
- 25:35Speaker 2: good idea in our relationship? I just don't want them
- 25:37Speaker 2: to think that I'm ungrateful.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Hmmmm. It's a tricky one.
- 25:43Speaker 2: It's a good topic thing, it's a really good topic.
- 25:45Speaker 7: Like, first of all, does a couple share money? If not, oh,
- 25:48Speaker 7: that's a good question. Does our listener maybe make less
- 25:52Speaker 7: than their partner or vice versa or whatever?
- 25:55Speaker 6: You know what I mean?
- 25:56Speaker 7: Like, does their spending habits directly impact the person who's
- 26:01Speaker 7: writing to us?
- 26:02Speaker 6: It doesn't say.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It doesn't say, so that's through it gets a little
- 26:06Speaker 2: bit tricky.
- 26:06Speaker 7: It doesn't say any thing like not only that, let's
- 26:09Speaker 7: say it doesn't impact at all this person's spending capabilities.
- 26:13Speaker 7: If they're spending a lot of money on gifts, it's
- 26:15Speaker 7: still at the end of the day, puts a lot
- 26:17Speaker 7: of pressure on the other person who's not spending as
- 26:20Speaker 7: much money. I've definitely been on the receiving end of
- 26:23Speaker 7: extravagant gifts.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Not to brag.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Or what's the most extravagant we need to go off
- 26:31Speaker 2: on the side, Yes, And I know I'm literally just I'm.
- 26:35Speaker 7: Actually gonna just use me and I'm always using me
- 26:37Speaker 7: and Live as an example because we're like relationship in
- 26:40Speaker 7: a relationship, but like you've actually like it.
- 26:42Speaker 6: But we do hack like carently.
- 26:44Speaker 7: We'd make a real hot coup all though, will you
- 26:46Speaker 7: well that would I think we're unfortunately not able to
- 26:50Speaker 7: do that.
- 26:50Speaker 4: We don't see but you're.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Like, we're friends and that's it, but thanks, we look
- 26:55Speaker 2: hot toe.
- 26:55Speaker 7: I kind of feel like siblings at this point. But no, like,
- 26:58Speaker 7: you know, Live makes a decent amount of money and
- 27:01Speaker 7: is comfortable spending money for my birthday and if I'm not.
- 27:05Speaker 6: Really there, I literally have.
- 27:07Speaker 7: Last year, I borrowed a thousand dollars from her so
- 27:10Speaker 7: I could buy her a really good present and I
- 27:13Speaker 7: feel like.
- 27:14Speaker 6: A little baby.
- 27:15Speaker 2: A thousand.
- 27:18Speaker 7: Was also like just for me to leave as well,
- 27:21Speaker 7: so it was like kind of like I'm buying your presents. Also,
- 27:23Speaker 7: it's going to be a big weekend where we're going
- 27:25Speaker 7: out and doing all these things. And also I don't
- 27:27Speaker 7: have enough money to make it to the end of
- 27:28Speaker 7: the pay cycle, so I just said send me. But yeah,
- 27:32Speaker 7: so there have been times that has happened. But we
- 27:34Speaker 7: have put gift like limits on what we're giving each
- 27:38Speaker 7: other because it does tend to get out of hand,
- 27:39Speaker 7: Like if she spends two hundred dollars, I'll spend I
- 27:42Speaker 7: love that.
- 27:42Speaker 2: You have a friend that you just like love so much.
- 27:44Speaker 7: I don't know how this happened, but she's you know,
- 27:47Speaker 7: she's my favorite person in the world anyway. But yeah,
- 27:50Speaker 7: so we will tend to put like little caps on
- 27:52Speaker 7: our gifts otherwise it makes the other person feel pressure
- 27:54Speaker 7: to end up spending that much money, you know. So
- 27:57Speaker 7: I guess that's maybe what you could do to have
- 28:00Speaker 7: a little conversation about more how it's affecting your own
- 28:05Speaker 7: like making you feel a little bit pressure to spend.
- 28:06Speaker 6: That much, you know what I mean.
- 28:08Speaker 7: Not that you're own grateful, it's just that you can't
- 28:11Speaker 7: keep counting match it, you haven't.
- 28:12Speaker 6: Match it, you don't want to, or you don't want to.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that's fair. I want to ask a perfect question.
- 28:18Speaker 2: I know you and your partner semi share money like
- 28:21Speaker 2: you do but you don't, But you do, but you don't.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Where's your present budget come from? Like is that individual
- 28:26Speaker 2: or is that something that is shared costs?
- 28:29Speaker 5: Our only shared costs really are bills and groceries like
- 28:34Speaker 5: things that we actually yes splitting, Like, we don't.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Share money for other things.
- 28:38Speaker 5: So gifts come out of our own budget, and we
- 28:40Speaker 5: always tend to like we've never spoken about it, but
- 28:43Speaker 5: it's just always kind of been. We spend around the
- 28:45Speaker 5: same amount of money on each other. And obviously the
- 28:47Speaker 5: longer that we've dated, that budget has grown.
- 28:50Speaker 2: But so longer term relationships are more expensive.
- 28:55Speaker 5: From my serious, if we've been dating for three months,
- 28:58Speaker 5: I'm not dropping present.
- 29:01Speaker 2: The present that you have to get them for the
- 29:02Speaker 2: wedding floor. Yeah, seriously, I will never financially recover from
- 29:07Speaker 2: this so expensive.
- 29:08Speaker 5: So I think that it's going to vary coupled couple
- 29:11Speaker 5: and how you manage your finances and your perspective on things.
- 29:13Speaker 5: I guess the other thing to consider it is like
- 29:15Speaker 5: values as well. So like we've spoken before about how
- 29:19Speaker 5: like the and I, you and I are both like
- 29:20Speaker 5: big gift givers. I love giving gifts like that's a
- 29:22Speaker 5: huge value to me. Whereas this person it sounds like
- 29:25Speaker 5: they don't care for it as much, like they appreciate
- 29:28Speaker 5: the thought, they appreciate the effort, but it sounds like
- 29:31Speaker 5: they're kind of saying, oh, like I don't really want
- 29:33Speaker 5: them to spend that money, like I don't care about
- 29:35Speaker 5: it that much. Whereas the person who's giving the gift,
- 29:38Speaker 5: it might be to them they're going, oh, but I
- 29:40Speaker 5: love you so much, I want to give you something
- 29:42Speaker 5: because to me, this demonstrates to you how much I
- 29:44Speaker 5: love you. So it's not even just about how you
- 29:47Speaker 5: view it financially, but I think also like how you
- 29:50Speaker 5: view it as an expression of love. YEA.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Love languages, Yeah, like conversation to go and we talk
- 29:58Speaker 2: about it a lot, or we have historically talked about
- 30:00Speaker 2: love languages a lot on the podcast, and I think
- 30:02Speaker 2: it's important to discuss because they tie so deeply to finances.
- 30:07Speaker 2: So obviously, like the gift giving thing, Yes, it can
- 30:10Speaker 2: be a reflection of love, but it can also be
- 30:12Speaker 2: something that's detrimental, Like you could be like Jess and
- 30:15Speaker 2: I and love giving gifts but also have no gash
- 30:17Speaker 2: for it, but still give gifts and then get yourself
- 30:20Speaker 2: into a financial pickle. I think if it was me,
- 30:24Speaker 2: I would probably want to start where you're saying, Yess,
- 30:26Speaker 2: like understanding your love language, Like you know, you might
- 30:29Speaker 2: be someone where a gift giving doesn't matter so much
- 30:32Speaker 2: and your partner might actually still want to get you
- 30:34Speaker 2: those expensive gifts. And I think that that's where a
- 30:37Speaker 2: good conversation of like, oh, well, what is your love language?
- 30:39Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, you don't know, Beck, how we do
- 30:41Speaker 2: this online survey and just see what your love language
- 30:43Speaker 2: is and then we can have this that makes so
- 30:45Speaker 2: much sense, Yess, as to why you always buy me
- 30:48Speaker 2: beautiful gifts and why I'm always trying to make you
- 30:51Speaker 2: tea and toast in the morning. So I think it's
- 30:54Speaker 2: it's understanding your relationship and where you're coming from. Because
- 30:58Speaker 2: as much as you I think this immediately goes to Okay,
- 31:01Speaker 2: we probably should set a budget and you know, say, okay, Jesse,
- 31:05Speaker 2: if I spend one hundred dollars on you, you can only
- 31:07Speaker 2: spend one hundred dollars on me, we'll call it that. Well,
- 31:09Speaker 2: that might not work as well, because I might really
- 31:12Speaker 2: want to get Jess a present, but Jess might really
- 31:15Speaker 2: want to do this beautiful weekend that costs not much
- 31:18Speaker 2: but has so much time and energy and thought and
- 31:20Speaker 2: is all about spending personal time together. And that's where
- 31:22Speaker 2: your values are. So I think if you're in a relationship,
- 31:25Speaker 2: it's not tit for TAT. I don't think just because
- 31:28Speaker 2: you spend one hundred dollars, I should spend one hundred dollars.
- 31:30Speaker 2: I think understanding your love language is so important. And
- 31:34Speaker 2: you know, as I'm talking about this, I'm thinking about
- 31:36Speaker 2: my relationship. I'm definitely a gift giver like that is.
- 31:40Speaker 2: I just really like it. It's really fun. Yeah, my
- 31:43Speaker 2: husband is a quality time and active service kind of guy,
- 31:47Speaker 2: Like I can guarantee that for my birthday, he'll be
- 31:50Speaker 2: thinking of things he can do for me, not things
- 31:52Speaker 2: he can buy for me. In fact, he never knows
- 31:54Speaker 2: what to get me. He's the first person to pop
- 31:56Speaker 2: up in Jess's DMS, come close to you and like, Hey,
- 31:59Speaker 2: what should I get for Tori. I've got no idea.
- 32:02Speaker 2: But he'll always be like, Oh, I've taken the morning
- 32:04Speaker 2: off work, i want to take you out for breakfast.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I've made you a cup of tea, I've done all
- 32:08Speaker 2: of these things and like, to him, that's his love
- 32:11Speaker 2: language and I adore it, but I think really understanding
- 32:14Speaker 2: that because you know, my love language and the love
- 32:17Speaker 2: language I want to receive might be different to that.
- 32:20Speaker 2: And if there's a disconnect in that, then you go, oh,
- 32:22Speaker 2: he always just throws money at the problem. He always
- 32:25Speaker 2: just buys lots of big, expensive gifts when maybe you're
- 32:28Speaker 2: not recognizing that that's actually his love language and that's
- 32:30Speaker 2: the way that he sees, you know, showing you love. Sure,
- 32:34Speaker 2: but you want to accept something different, and he actually
- 32:36Speaker 2: needs to learn that so that he can show you
- 32:38Speaker 2: love in a way that you really want to accept it.
- 32:40Speaker 5: They might not realize that it makes you uncomfortable either,
- 32:43Speaker 5: because it sounds like from this message that the inability
- 32:46Speaker 5: or the fact that you don't want to spend as
- 32:48Speaker 5: much is putting you a bit on edge, which if
- 32:50Speaker 5: your partner then realized that you were feeling that way,
- 32:52Speaker 5: they then might feel bad. So it's like a you
- 32:53Speaker 5: need to talk really, yeah, to have.
- 32:55Speaker 2: A chat and work it out, because as much as
- 32:57Speaker 2: it you know, in this circumstance, it actually might be
- 33:00Speaker 2: the best solution to set a budget for each of
- 33:02Speaker 2: you because both of you have the same values and goals,
- 33:05Speaker 2: and you're like, the I don't want to talk about
- 33:06Speaker 2: this fluffy love language. Stuff doesn't make sense to us.
- 33:09Speaker 2: I just want to cap dress out. One hundred bucks,
- 33:11Speaker 2: yes on you, one hundred bucks on me, call it
- 33:13Speaker 2: a day. That's what we do for presents. That might
- 33:16Speaker 2: be really good. But I think having these deeper, fluffy
- 33:19Speaker 2: chats can actually lead to more wholesome outcomes. So yeah,
- 33:23Speaker 2: we got that DM. We did ask the community a
- 33:25Speaker 2: few questions. Do you want to hear what they had
- 33:27Speaker 2: to say?
- 33:28Speaker 4: Always?
- 33:29Speaker 2: So, First, we said how do you and your partner
- 33:31Speaker 2: purchase gifts? Forty percent of you said, we set a number,
- 33:35Speaker 2: so we spend the same amount. Sixty percent of you said,
- 33:38Speaker 2: there's no limit. We spend as much as we feel
- 33:41Speaker 2: is right. I'd be interested to know more about that that, like,
- 33:44Speaker 2: if you spend whatever, what does that mean. The next
- 33:48Speaker 2: question we asked was how would you feel if your
- 33:50Speaker 2: partner spent more on you? Thirty nine percent of you
- 33:53Speaker 2: said guilty, and then I feel a lot of pressure
- 33:56Speaker 2: to spend more on them. Sixty one percent of you
- 33:58Speaker 2: though not guilty, that it's their choice.
- 34:02Speaker 4: That's kind of how I.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Feel get it, but you chose this life. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 34:06Speaker 2: you chose to go to the shops and buy that
- 34:08Speaker 2: that's not on me. I'm so glad you think I'll
- 34:10Speaker 2: like it, but that doesn't not mean I'm spending five
- 34:12Speaker 2: hundred bucks on you, because it's the thought that should count.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Here's this card I made with texter.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I coupon for one free dinner with me.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Yes. I just assumed you were about to say one
- 34:24Speaker 2: free foot massage, and I'm like, yes, I'm not that generous.
- 34:28Speaker 2: So the next question we asked was do you think
- 34:31Speaker 2: a spending limit is a good idea in a relationship.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Eighty percent of you said yes, and then we asked
- 34:37Speaker 2: for your two cents, as we always do, so here
- 34:40Speaker 2: are some of the comments. One of you said, when
- 34:43Speaker 2: I don't stick to mine, I actually end up feeling
- 34:45Speaker 2: guilty and tend to feel guilty for a few weeks after.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Do if you blow your budget on a friend, do
- 34:50Speaker 2: you feel guilty? I mean, if it was impacting my budget,
- 34:54Speaker 2: I think I would.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Yeah, I'd feel stressed.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Yeah that's fair.
- 34:57Speaker 6: I feel guilty.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Yeah that's fair. Someone else said, we have the same goals,
- 35:02Speaker 2: having just bought our first home. So this makes it
- 35:05Speaker 2: so much easier if there is a limit. Someone said,
- 35:08Speaker 2: no guilt and everything is fair. Someone else said, we're married.
- 35:11Speaker 2: So some years we spend a lot because it's a
- 35:13Speaker 2: big birthday. Other years are just token years and we
- 35:16Speaker 2: don't spend a lot. That's a good way to view
- 35:18Speaker 2: it as well. That is good, come and go the
- 35:21Speaker 2: next year is my partner and I only set budgets
- 35:23Speaker 2: for the big gifts like birthdays and Christmas. I don't
- 35:27Speaker 2: get my partner presents any other times.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Just because little present anniversary.
- 35:36Speaker 2: I mean, what's a because present? Is that me?
- 35:39Speaker 3: Going?
- 35:39Speaker 2: You needed new jobs? So look how nice I am.
- 35:43Speaker 2: I bought some because you're a male and I.
- 35:46Speaker 4: Just knew you wouldn't that's the thing.
- 35:48Speaker 5: Or is it like, oh, I bought you your favorite
- 35:50Speaker 5: lolli because I was doing the shopping and I thought
- 35:51Speaker 5: you were Like, then is that a gift?
- 35:54Speaker 2: Is that just that is?
- 35:55Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 35:55Speaker 2: I don't know, because I do that a lot. But
- 35:57Speaker 2: I definitely am not the type of person that's like, oh, Jess,
- 35:59Speaker 2: Valentine is coming up. What are you getting your partner? Yeah,
- 36:02Speaker 2: we're not getting a Valentine's gift from me. I already
- 36:05Speaker 2: spent all my money buying heart shaped chocolate for my
- 36:07Speaker 2: team down all right. Someone else said, we have shared
- 36:11Speaker 2: goals of saving for our future together, so it makes
- 36:14Speaker 2: sense to have a set amount. Someone else said, we
- 36:17Speaker 2: don't go over our shared gift for budgets. Someone said
- 36:20Speaker 2: I am the primary income earner, so whatever he spends
- 36:24Speaker 2: is actually my money.
- 36:27Speaker 5: I kind of love that if you share, if you
- 36:29Speaker 5: share finances, that's the case too, right.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. Someone said someone's start to part
- 36:34Speaker 2: one and part two, so part one spending limit, taking
- 36:36Speaker 2: into account each other's financial positions at that time, and
- 36:39Speaker 2: then part two says I'd rather get a twenty dollars
- 36:42Speaker 2: present than a present that put my boyfriend in a
- 36:43Speaker 2: stressful financial position over a present.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Amen, Amen, I really like it.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I also feel like i'd much prefer a present that
- 36:51Speaker 2: just meant more.
- 36:53Speaker 5: Yeah, footful, write me a song, Oh, write me a
- 36:56Speaker 5: whole right direct produce.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I would pay a lot for my husband not to
- 37:02Speaker 2: do that, Like, oh, I can't think of anything worse
- 37:08Speaker 2: than him singing or serenading to it. I'd be so awkward,
- 37:11Speaker 2: ud recoil. Someone said, we have a twenty dollars limit
- 37:14Speaker 2: on Christmas gifts. It forces us to get very creative.
- 37:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I like that fun.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I think I've told you guys before that in our family,
- 37:22Speaker 2: like Chris Kringle, we have handmade, second hand or homemade.
- 37:27Speaker 6: Oh I love us.
- 37:28Speaker 2: So you have to like either buy a second hand,
- 37:30Speaker 2: make it in your kitchen or whatever, or like build
- 37:33Speaker 2: something for them.
- 37:34Speaker 5: Very fun.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Yeah, So that puts a lot of pressure on it.
- 37:38Speaker 2: And I had to start planning for Christmas in October
- 37:40Speaker 2: because I'm like, I don't know what I'm going to do.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Someone the all said no, seriously, a limit only ends
- 37:47Speaker 2: up starting fights, and there's just a lot of people
- 37:51Speaker 2: with a lot of expectations. I'm a bit of the
- 37:53Speaker 2: opinion that, yeah, an amount can actually just set a
- 37:56Speaker 2: realistic budget, especially if someone keeps going over. But if
- 37:59Speaker 2: they keep going over on you, especially after you've had
- 38:02Speaker 2: a conversation about a budget, I genuinely wouldn't worry too much.
- 38:06Speaker 2: It might be because that's their love language and they
- 38:09Speaker 2: just really love gifting new things, and we need to see.
- 38:12Speaker 2: I don't think we should always feel guilty about accepting presents,
- 38:17Speaker 2: Like sometimes it's really nice that someone thought of you
- 38:19Speaker 2: like that time and that energy and that effort to
- 38:21Speaker 2: put it together. Like Beck, I don't know if you've
- 38:24Speaker 2: ever received a present from Jess, but they're the best.
- 38:27Speaker 6: Oh we did ones? Oh you did? You got these
- 38:30Speaker 6: sensory toys.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's right. I more mean like a birthday present,
- 38:35Speaker 2: Like you don't just get Oh hey, I bought you
- 38:37Speaker 2: this coffee mug because it reminded me of you. She
- 38:40Speaker 2: might buy the coffee mug, but it comes like in
- 38:42Speaker 2: a basket with other things and it's like decorated and
- 38:45Speaker 2: has bow's and stuff. Like the effort is elite friends
- 38:50Speaker 2: with Jess Christmas.
- 38:52Speaker 6: Yes, that's so excited.
- 38:54Speaker 2: I think that's all we have time for today. Guys.
- 38:56Speaker 2: I've gotta go plan my Christmas present and we are
- 39:00Speaker 2: going to see you on Monday. From Money Diary, have
- 39:02Speaker 2: the best weekend, enjoy it all, and we'll see you then.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Love you bye, guys.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Bye.
