- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello.
- 0:01Speaker 2: My name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yord Order
- 0:05Speaker 2: Kerni Whalbury and a waddery woman. And before we get
- 0:08Speaker 2: started on She's on the Money podcast, I would like
- 0:11Speaker 2: to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land of which
- 0:14Speaker 2: this podcast is recorded on a wondery country, acknowledging the elders,
- 0:18Speaker 2: the ancestors and the next generation coming through as this
- 0:22Speaker 2: podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing and the storytelling
- 0:27Speaker 2: of you to make a difference for today and lasting
- 0:31Speaker 2: impact for tomorrow.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Let's get into it. She's on the Money, She's on
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Money.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 0:59Speaker 3: for millennials who want financial freedom. My name is Beckside
- 1:02Speaker 3: and I'm joined today by Victoria Divine.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Hello, little miss beck. I was just saying that you
- 1:08Speaker 1: were looking really extracute today and I feel like it's
- 1:10Speaker 1: coming across in your voice as well. That's so nice.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Thank you, You've got a vibe. That you've got a vibe.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I love it.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Thankes me so happy. Thank you so much.
- 1:18Speaker 3: So VH. I know that you are really good at
- 1:20Speaker 3: sitting budgets. I am not, so I feel like.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You thinking in the yang that's all.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah, that's so true, that's why we're here. But are
- 1:28Speaker 3: you good at keeping them? Because today on the show,
- 1:30Speaker 3: we're talking about renovating on a budget.
- 1:33Speaker 1: This is a spicy topic. If you follow me on Instagram,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you know that I have historically renovated and blown the
- 1:40Speaker 1: budget completely even though I had a really big, very
- 1:44Speaker 1: sexy spreadsheet. But after the break, we are going to
- 1:47Speaker 1: be talking about ways to save on materials and also
- 1:50Speaker 1: the importance of project managing all of the stages. But budget,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I think is a really good place to start today, Beck,
- 1:57Speaker 1: because I want you to be setting this before you
- 1:59Speaker 1: do as anything when it comes to renovating, Beck, because
- 2:02Speaker 1: I feel like when we start renovating, it's always more
- 2:06Speaker 1: expensive than you think it's going to be. So we
- 2:09Speaker 1: need to make sure that not only do we have
- 2:10Speaker 1: the funds, but we're happy to spend the amount of
- 2:13Speaker 1: funds that we are planning on allocating towards this renovation.
- 2:17Speaker 1: But we also need to make sure that there's a
- 2:19Speaker 1: good enough buffer there. Because the only thing that saved
- 2:22Speaker 1: us when we went over on our previous renovation was
- 2:25Speaker 1: the fact that we had kind of buffered in a
- 2:27Speaker 1: fair bit to make sure that everything was going to
- 2:30Speaker 1: be hunky dor and it was okay, and things happen,
- 2:33Speaker 1: they get thrown off. Course, mistakes are made, materials are
- 2:36Speaker 1: going to be more expensive than you thought, so buffet
- 2:38Speaker 1: is going to be incredibly important. I mean, I didn't
- 2:41Speaker 1: realize how much it costs to have our gas moved,
- 2:44Speaker 1: Like I just assumed it would be easy enough and
- 2:46Speaker 1: you'd get a plumber and get it all done. But
- 2:48Speaker 1: like we got stung with a few things, so we're
- 2:50Speaker 1: going to get into that. I think it's a bit
- 2:52Speaker 1: of a spicy episode, but like a really good one
- 2:54Speaker 1: because we are renovating now again and I feel like
- 2:57Speaker 1: we're doing it so much smarter this time.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Beck, Yeah, I'm really interested. Were there any like surprise
- 3:02Speaker 3: costs or like really costly mistakes that you made along
- 3:05Speaker 3: the way? This gas thing sounds like it's a vessel
- 3:07Speaker 3: that holds no content.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And I feel like people listening to this, if you
- 3:13Speaker 1: work in the industry, you're gonna be like Victoria, you
- 3:16Speaker 1: are so daft. Of course, that costs a lot of money.
- 3:19Speaker 1: It's like financial advice, right, Like I know how much
- 3:22Speaker 1: it costs, and then when I tell you, Beck, You're
- 3:24Speaker 1: like horrified. You're like, oh my gosh, how could it
- 3:26Speaker 1: be thousands of dollars? And then I start breaking it down.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, well, you know you've got the research,
- 3:31Speaker 1: you've got, the development, you've got, you know, all of
- 3:33Speaker 1: the admin support you've got, you know, all of this
- 3:35Speaker 1: other stuff that goes into it in the time and
- 3:37Speaker 1: the energy and the effort, like it's really expensive. And
- 3:39Speaker 1: then you go, oh, that makes sense, but like you
- 3:41Speaker 1: didn't know the background because you don't work in the industry.
- 3:44Speaker 1: So I guess this is just my plea please be
- 3:46Speaker 1: kind because, like I know, I'm going to sound really
- 3:48Speaker 1: dumb on this for some of the decisions that I've made,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but I'm sharing them with you and the community, Beck,
- 3:54Speaker 1: so that hopefully you don't copy me.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I think it's so lovely for you.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But moving the gas was really expect Yeah what was that?
- 4:00Speaker 2: Like?
- 4:01Speaker 1: It wasn't because it was super complicated. Like we contacted
- 4:03Speaker 1: a plumber and he said, yeap, no worries, I can
- 4:05Speaker 1: do that. But it was complicated for him to actually
- 4:07Speaker 1: do that because he needed to like extend the pipes
- 4:10Speaker 1: and move like where things were connecting, and we actually
- 4:14Speaker 1: planned when we did our renovation, I like went to
- 4:17Speaker 1: somebody who if you guys know and we won't name names,
- 4:20Speaker 1: but it didn't work out so well. They ended up
- 4:22Speaker 1: being an absolute not good human being. But what happened
- 4:28Speaker 1: was we got these beautiful designs back and I was like,
- 4:31Speaker 1: oh my god, I'm in love with them. I can't wait.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And then we took them to our plumber and our
- 4:36Speaker 1: electrician and said, hey, these are the plans, like, you know,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you okay with them? And they were like, oh, they
- 4:41Speaker 1: are you sure you want to move the plumbing and
- 4:44Speaker 1: I was like, well yeah, because like it just makes
- 4:46Speaker 1: a lot of sense to have the bathroom there connects
- 4:49Speaker 1: really nicely, Like, you know, I don't want to walk
- 4:51Speaker 1: into my bathroom and just see the toilet right there,
- 4:54Speaker 1: so like the move makes sense. And they're like, so
- 4:57Speaker 1: that will add about twenty five thousand dollars to your budget.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I would love to see the toilet right there, Like
- 5:02Speaker 1: I would actually love that. Actually, now that I look
- 5:05Speaker 1: at it again, yeah, I've actually changed my mind. So
- 5:08Speaker 1: it was interesting seeing how changes that I didn't think
- 5:12Speaker 1: were big were actually really big, and things that I
- 5:15Speaker 1: didn't think were in my budget, were actually really obtainable
- 5:19Speaker 1: because of the process that we're in. So, like something
- 5:21Speaker 1: else that I thought was really bougie that we'd never have,
- 5:24Speaker 1: right underfloor heating. Oh that sounds expensively. Yeah, so in
- 5:28Speaker 1: our bathrooms we have underfloor heating. That's glagious. That sounds
- 5:32Speaker 1: so lux right, yeah, But because we were retiling anyway,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I think it cost us like five hundred dollars to
- 5:39Speaker 1: add it. Oh, which is a lot of money. Please
- 5:42Speaker 1: don't get me wrong, but renovating is expensive. But five
- 5:45Speaker 1: hundred dollars for the bathroom to have underfloor heating. I
- 5:49Speaker 1: was like, hold on, I thought this was going to
- 5:50Speaker 1: be thousands and thousands. And our electrician was like, no, v,
- 5:54Speaker 1: it's cheap because essentially, you're putting it in before you
- 5:57Speaker 1: put the flooring on. If you wanted to go and
- 5:59Speaker 1: put it in post, we'd have to rip up the floor,
- 6:01Speaker 1: put the underfloor heating in, and then redo the floors.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, so you're saying, if I
- 6:06Speaker 1: make this decision now, you just like lay down the
- 6:09Speaker 1: underfloor heating and then do the floorboards over at the top.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And he was like yes, And I was like this
- 6:14Speaker 1: is genius. So, don't get me wrong, that's a very
- 6:17Speaker 1: boogie addition to our house and I love it. Like Beck,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I think you and I can both agree that Melbourne
- 6:22Speaker 1: it's frigid at the moment. It is so cold, Like
- 6:25Speaker 1: I got out the other morning and I had to
- 6:27Speaker 1: pour water over my windscreen so that it would defrost
- 6:30Speaker 1: my car so I could drive to work. Like, don't
- 6:32Speaker 1: get me wrong, not a complaint, but still cold. Oh yeah,
- 6:37Speaker 1: but I walked into my bathroom and the tiles were warm.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Oh that is so that's luxury to me.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I really thought it was way more. And as
- 6:44Speaker 3: you say, like, it makes so much sense that if
- 6:46Speaker 3: you do it, pretile ease. You even see this in
- 6:49Speaker 3: like rich people houses.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I think it's a rich person housing and that's what
- 6:52Speaker 1: makes me feel rich. And don't get me wrong, absolute privileged. Still,
- 6:56Speaker 1: but I think that that would shock you when you
- 6:58Speaker 1: start to go, well, actually, what are things that we
- 7:01Speaker 1: could do while renovating that we might not have thought about?
- 7:05Speaker 1: And to be honest, I didn't even look into underfloor heating.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And I mean this is a very side note conversation,
- 7:11Speaker 1: but I hope it's interesting. But I didn't even look
- 7:13Speaker 1: into it because I just in my head, I was
- 7:15Speaker 1: like eight thousand dollars. I don't know why, but I
- 7:17Speaker 1: just thought that's going to be so expensive. I didn't
- 7:19Speaker 1: even explore the option. And I think that when you're
- 7:22Speaker 1: doing your budget, just explore the options and understand them,
- 7:26Speaker 1: even if you're like, oh, I'm not really sure, like
- 7:28Speaker 1: this is probably going to be completely out of budget,
- 7:30Speaker 1: because like if that electrician hadn't said, oh, are you
- 7:34Speaker 1: going to do this? And I go, absolutely not, it's
- 7:36Speaker 1: too expensive and he explained it to me, we wouldn't
- 7:39Speaker 1: have it, And had we wanted to do it post,
- 7:41Speaker 1: it wouldn't have been an option. So I think that
- 7:43Speaker 1: these are little things that I had no idea about,
- 7:46Speaker 1: but now I know. I'm just grateful to have gone through.
- 7:49Speaker 1: If that makes sense.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely.
- 7:51Speaker 1: So, yes, there are things in the budget that had
- 7:54Speaker 1: surprised me. Both they were too expensive or they were
- 7:57Speaker 1: much cheaper than I thought it was going to be.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Cool, like costly mistakes. Was there anything that you did
- 8:03Speaker 3: along the way that were like, oh my god, I
- 8:05Speaker 3: wish I could go back.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And yeah, there were a couple and I absolutely wasted
- 8:08Speaker 1: some money because I didn't do things properly or in
- 8:11Speaker 1: the right order, so from maybe just not thinking about
- 8:16Speaker 1: it and thinking it would be an easy change. So,
- 8:18Speaker 1: for example, I had agreed for everything in the house
- 8:21Speaker 1: to be painted, and I was like, Yep, cool, no worries,
- 8:24Speaker 1: everything's just going to be painted like this, crispy white.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I really liked it. But I hadn't really thought about
- 8:29Speaker 1: the fact that I did want to paint our bedroom
- 8:32Speaker 1: and I wanted our bedroom to be a gray, and
- 8:35Speaker 1: I just hadn't communicated that. I didn't think it would
- 8:37Speaker 1: be this big change later to go back and do it,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and ultimately I should have had that conversation. You would
- 8:44Speaker 1: think that I would have. I just don't know why
- 8:45Speaker 1: I didn't. I think because I wasn't up to the
- 8:47Speaker 1: styling part. I just thought it doesn't matter, like, just
- 8:50Speaker 1: make everything white. It'll be fine. And it basically would
- 8:53Speaker 1: have been free had I communicated that from the beginning
- 8:57Speaker 1: that the bedroom was meant to be great. Because when
- 8:59Speaker 1: they were purchasing paint, I mean I still had to
- 9:02Speaker 1: purchase it, right, They had allocated white paint for the bedroom,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and then they went and purchased the white paint for
- 9:07Speaker 1: the bedroom and painted my bedroom and it was all
- 9:10Speaker 1: within budget and scope. And then when my husband and
- 9:13Speaker 1: I did a walk through, I was like, oh, hey,
- 9:14Speaker 1: actually I was thinking about making this room gray and
- 9:17Speaker 1: they're like, I mean we can, but we're going to
- 9:19Speaker 1: have to purchase more paint and then you're going to
- 9:21Speaker 1: have to pay for the trade to come in and
- 9:23Speaker 1: paint just this room.
- 9:24Speaker 3: And I was like, right, did you end up doing it? Yeah?
- 9:27Speaker 1: I did.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I did.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And by did you actually end up doing it, I
- 9:32Speaker 1: mean I purchased the paint. My dad helped me paint it.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Because the trades, Like, there are some things that you
- 9:37Speaker 1: can do yourself, Like, you don't need trades for absolutely everything.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm the Queen of YouTube sometimes oh yeah, if it's
- 9:44Speaker 1: a flat pack, we can do the flat packs. So
- 9:47Speaker 1: I think that, yeah, there are things that you can
- 9:49Speaker 1: definitely do yourself. And then there are also things that
- 9:51Speaker 1: I would never compromise. Beck I'm not going to do
- 9:54Speaker 1: the electrician stuff. I'm also not going to be doing
- 9:56Speaker 1: any plumbing. I'm not going to be messing around with
- 9:59Speaker 1: things that I have no business messing around with. So like, yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 1: you've got to find a happy medium. Yeah, so don't
- 10:06Speaker 1: bite off more than you can chew. So like, don't
- 10:08Speaker 1: be like, oh, I can absolutely paint the entire house.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, you totally could, but do you
- 10:16Speaker 1: actually want to do? You know how long that was?
- 10:19Speaker 1: Ike you? So I didn't paint the entire house. I
- 10:22Speaker 1: just painted the bedroom like a whole day plus okay,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and then we had to let it dry and then
- 10:27Speaker 1: we had to do another coat the next day. Yes,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I see, So I was grateful for the painters. Also,
- 10:34Speaker 1: my dad and I with our brushes and rollers the
- 10:37Speaker 1: whole day. And then I saw them come in to
- 10:39Speaker 1: do the rest of the lound room and they had
- 10:40Speaker 1: spray guns and it took them like five minutes. And
- 10:43Speaker 1: I was like, I'll just see myself out.
- 10:47Speaker 3: You go and get yourself a spray gun.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's another course.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true.
- 10:51Speaker 1: That's true. So I think it's important to not just
- 10:53Speaker 1: budget but think about every tiny little thing that you
- 10:57Speaker 1: think is maybe little, because it might not be that
- 11:00Speaker 1: the brand.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Scheme of things, and even if it is, it really
- 11:02Speaker 3: does that up. But v as you know, I've never owned,
- 11:04Speaker 3: I've kind of only been in rentals, so it's always
- 11:06Speaker 3: been about like making like cosmetic changes to personal space.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Is it worth thinking about just making like cosmetic change
- 11:14Speaker 3: to a house or do you feel like if you
- 11:16Speaker 3: have the money to renovate, you should. I guess if
- 11:19Speaker 3: you're like me and you've only ever rented, is it
- 11:21Speaker 3: a waste of space to be hanging artwork like chucking
- 11:25Speaker 3: some nails?
- 11:25Speaker 1: You're allowed? Yeah, I definitely believe in making a space
- 11:29Speaker 1: your own. So even if you don't own, there are
- 11:32Speaker 1: lots of things that you can do that don't damage
- 11:34Speaker 1: the property to make the space your own. Like, please
- 11:37Speaker 1: don't get me wrong. You don't want to be going, oh,
- 11:39Speaker 1: I really don't like this kitchen. I'm going to install
- 11:41Speaker 1: a brand new kitchen in this rental property because that
- 11:43Speaker 1: doesn't make a lot of sense. But you've got to
- 11:46Speaker 1: remember that this is your home, Like you've got to
- 11:49Speaker 1: feel comfortable coming into it, and if there's something about
- 11:52Speaker 1: your home that you're not comfortable with, I would be
- 11:56Speaker 1: looking at ways to change it or ways to make
- 11:59Speaker 1: yourself comfortable with it. Right, So, like, whether that is
- 12:02Speaker 1: hanging art on the walls, maybe you're not allowed to,
- 12:05Speaker 1: you know, nail things into the walls, but could you
- 12:08Speaker 1: call the real estate agent and go, hey, Can I
- 12:11Speaker 1: use those command strips and put some artwork up? Can I,
- 12:14Speaker 1: you know, maybe get one of those pressure rods and
- 12:17Speaker 1: I can put up some beautiful curtains. If that's something
- 12:20Speaker 1: that you know, it adds to the vibe of your space.
- 12:22Speaker 1: So I think there's lots you can do that are
- 12:24Speaker 1: not necessarily permanent changes if you're renting to make your
- 12:29Speaker 1: space your own. And don't get me wrong, they're things
- 12:32Speaker 1: that you're going to spend money on, but like, to me,
- 12:34Speaker 1: that's spending money in order to benefit your mental health.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Like you.
- 12:39Speaker 3: That's like true.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Do you want to feel like super comfy in your
- 12:43Speaker 1: own bedroom even if you're in a big sharehouse, like
- 12:46Speaker 1: adding a few little things, or maybe you've got dank carpets,
- 12:48Speaker 1: Like I remember my first sharehouse back like they'd redone
- 12:52Speaker 1: the carpets and there were those ones you could see
- 12:54Speaker 1: the edges of the squares. They'd like done those tiles.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Oh.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I just remember thinking it was so dank because they
- 13:00Speaker 1: were like so thin. Like the carpet was awful. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: I went to Ikia and I think I just bought
- 13:05Speaker 1: like a fifty dollar rug. It honestly changed the way
- 13:09Speaker 1: I felt about my bedroom because before it just felt
- 13:12Speaker 1: ick to be on the carpet and also, well, I
- 13:14Speaker 1: don't afford anything else, like it's not going to happen.
- 13:16Speaker 1: But this rug changed my space. So can you do
- 13:20Speaker 1: to make yourself feel comfortable in it? And I mean,
- 13:22Speaker 1: we are definitely talking about knockdown, rebuild, actual renovation today,
- 13:26Speaker 1: but I think it's also worth acknowledging that to me,
- 13:29Speaker 1: that was an investment into my mental health, into me
- 13:32Speaker 1: having a safe and cozy space that I just felt
- 13:34Speaker 1: at home in.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think it's also relevant for people who
- 13:37Speaker 3: have moved into a house can't afford to renovate exactly
- 13:39Speaker 3: the same.
- 13:40Speaker 1: There's so many cheap tips and tricks and stuff that
- 13:42Speaker 1: you can.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Do to make the space cozy, even if you're not
- 13:45Speaker 3: loving it yet and you feel like you have intention
- 13:48Speaker 3: of changing it, just put your coziness your mental health.
- 13:50Speaker 1: First, one hundred percent. It's like the time that I
- 13:53Speaker 1: went and bought a pantry, because like the house that
- 13:56Speaker 1: I moved into, the one I'm talking about with the
- 13:57Speaker 1: carpet squares, had the worst kitchen storage, like dank kitchen
- 14:02Speaker 1: cabinets were falling off, like they were also really water damaged,
- 14:05Speaker 1: like you know those ones where the male of mine
- 14:07Speaker 1: is like real puffed out. So the kitchen was horrendous,
- 14:10Speaker 1: Beck and I just went and bought on Facebook marketplace
- 14:14Speaker 1: a used pantry and put it in the corner. Changed
- 14:17Speaker 1: the way we used our kitchen.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Absolutely, So there are things that you can do that
- 14:21Speaker 1: you think, oh, I didn't even know you could buy
- 14:23Speaker 1: a pantry. There. I'm like, yes, you can buy a pantry,
- 14:25Speaker 1: Like you can put it all together, Like you could
- 14:27Speaker 1: go down to Bunnings and buy one of those flat
- 14:29Speaker 1: pack pantrees, or you could buy one of the shelving
- 14:32Speaker 1: cabinets so everyone has a space for all their cereals
- 14:35Speaker 1: and stuff, because otherwise the cupbods get packed. There are
- 14:38Speaker 1: lots of things you can do in a rental that
- 14:40Speaker 1: don't damage the property, that add value to your life.
- 14:42Speaker 3: I think, yes, I totally agree. And you don't even
- 14:45Speaker 3: realize when things are clotted, it really makes your brain
- 14:48Speaker 3: feel clutter. You don't really get work done as well
- 14:50Speaker 3: as you exactly if your cereals were on their own shelf.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and if you're me, you need a container
- 14:55Speaker 1: for your cereal and then you feel like your life
- 14:57Speaker 1: is like made. That's people who have their dry goods
- 15:02Speaker 1: in containers. I just think they've got their life together.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It might not be true, but like, if you've got
- 15:07Speaker 1: a jaffa flower, Oh my gosh, are you saying that,
- 15:09Speaker 1: you don't crumple the top of the paper and just
- 15:11Speaker 1: shove it in the back of the pantry. Get an
- 15:13Speaker 1: old rubber buet.
- 15:15Speaker 3: I really really admire people to do that. This is
- 15:18Speaker 3: kind of like going back to what you're saying about DIY.
- 15:20Speaker 3: So it's obviously a good way to save but are
- 15:22Speaker 3: there any like caveats?
- 15:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you need to be really really stick
- 15:25Speaker 1: about what is achievable for you. So obviously, can you
- 15:28Speaker 1: paint your own house, as I was saying before, Yeah,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you probably could, But is it a good use of
- 15:34Speaker 1: your time and your patience and the relationship that you
- 15:36Speaker 1: have with your dad? Thankfully, my dad and I are
- 15:40Speaker 1: still on good terms. But like, that was such fiddly
- 15:43Speaker 1: work that I didn't even think about. And I'm very,
- 15:47Speaker 1: very privileged to have a dad that is basically the
- 15:50Speaker 1: DIY king. So he was an accountant, as everybody knows
- 15:53Speaker 1: because I've mentioned it before on the pod, but he
- 15:56Speaker 1: basically built our entire house. He should have been a
- 15:59Speaker 1: bill but he ended up an accountant, so he knows
- 16:02Speaker 1: what he's doing when it comes to painting. And I
- 16:04Speaker 1: don't like taking direction from other people. Beck That's why
- 16:08Speaker 1: I ended up being a business owner, not an employee,
- 16:11Speaker 1: because I think that to be thirty two, I probably
- 16:14Speaker 1: would have been fired a number of times along the
- 16:17Speaker 1: way had this been you know, my reality. But you know,
- 16:21Speaker 1: Dad going all right, so we have to cut in,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and I'm like, what's cutting in? He's like, well, you've
- 16:25Speaker 1: got to like paint around the edges so that they're
- 16:27Speaker 1: like really crispy and nice, and then you paint the middle.
- 16:30Speaker 1: And I was like, can't you just paint the whole thing.
- 16:32Speaker 1: He's like no, then it would really look like you
- 16:34Speaker 1: did a diy job. And I was like, Okay, no worry.
- 16:36Speaker 1: So like, you've got to do it properly and that
- 16:38Speaker 1: takes time and energy and effort, and I would have
- 16:41Speaker 1: a think about is there another job in the list
- 16:43Speaker 1: that you can or you want to do? So, for example,
- 16:47Speaker 1: we have put a new kitchen in our house, which
- 16:49Speaker 1: is really exciting, and we got a quote to demo it,
- 16:53Speaker 1: and my husband and I were like, absolutely not. So
- 16:56Speaker 1: we spent a weekend and we had a little bit
- 16:58Speaker 1: of a working be with my family, and his dad
- 17:00Speaker 1: came down and we demoed it ourselves. To be honest,
- 17:03Speaker 1: it was so expensive to have it demoed, and I
- 17:06Speaker 1: was like, what's the worst that could go wrong? Please,
- 17:09Speaker 1: don't get me wrong, Like we didn't want to mess
- 17:12Speaker 1: around with the like gas or the electricity or whatever,
- 17:14Speaker 1: and we cut the power off first. We did it properly,
- 17:16Speaker 1: but like, I can pull out the kitchen, because what's
- 17:18Speaker 1: the worst that can happen? I break the kitchen that
- 17:20Speaker 1: we're already getting rid of.
- 17:22Speaker 3: So just a silly question.
- 17:23Speaker 1: But demo is demolish, demolishing it. So for me, pulling
- 17:27Speaker 1: out the old kitchen made the most sense to us
- 17:29Speaker 1: because I was like, I'm not paying somebody else thousands
- 17:31Speaker 1: of dollars to do a job that, to be honest,
- 17:34Speaker 1: was just a lot of hard work. To me, it
- 17:36Speaker 1: wasn't about skill. It was literally about getting it out
- 17:39Speaker 1: and having to carry the kitchen downstairs would be kind
- 17:41Speaker 1: of fun, like for the first part, Like, it wasn't
- 17:44Speaker 1: fun when I was doing all the fi lily bits
- 17:46Speaker 1: and like, you know, unscrewing things. I was like, because
- 17:48Speaker 1: we did try and save a lot of the kitchen.
- 17:50Speaker 1: In fact, that's a side tip. We listed the kitchen
- 17:53Speaker 1: on Facebook marketplace because I did like to go to waste.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Like at the end of the day. It was a
- 17:58Speaker 1: very damaged, old water damaged kitchen that needed to go
- 18:02Speaker 1: because it's been in the cow since what the early eighties,
- 18:05Speaker 1: Like she had had her time, but some guy came
- 18:09Speaker 1: and picked it up. We listed it for free on
- 18:10Speaker 1: Facebook marketplace and he was like, I'm fitting out my
- 18:13Speaker 1: workshop with this, And I was like, Oh, what a
- 18:15Speaker 1: good way to use it, because it's not going to
- 18:17Speaker 1: be wasted. You're going to fit out your workshop and
- 18:19Speaker 1: your tools are going to live in it.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and he's probably going to take it apart himself.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I assume you have to. I mean we pulled it.
- 18:25Speaker 1: All out because we had deadlines. But yes, you can
- 18:27Speaker 1: also tell people that they have to take it out
- 18:29Speaker 1: too if you really want.
- 18:31Speaker 3: That's so that's a money win, right. Did you sis
- 18:33Speaker 3: a kick anything? What's it called when you like run
- 18:35Speaker 3: and then you put your legs up to kick something?
- 18:37Speaker 1: Oh?
- 18:38Speaker 3: Is that a siss a kick?
- 18:39Speaker 1: I didn't seiss a kick anything, So it was like
- 18:41Speaker 1: a whole kitchen. Yeah, it's like I mean, if it
- 18:44Speaker 1: was like a plaster board wall, maybe we would have
- 18:46Speaker 1: had a crack, but like it was like melamine. I
- 18:49Speaker 1: don't trust my skill. Also, I mentioned flat packs before
- 18:53Speaker 1: because I've used them a lot historically, but so many
- 18:56Speaker 1: of them are made so well. Now, in fact, we
- 18:59Speaker 1: went with a flat pack kitchen from Kaboodle. Like I'll
- 19:02Speaker 1: upload some videos to Instagram and show you, but the
- 19:06Speaker 1: quality of the Kaboodle kitchen, the quality is honestly on
- 19:11Speaker 1: part if not better than. And that's not me even
- 19:13Speaker 1: being dramatic because they're sponsoring this episode. This is just
- 19:16Speaker 1: me being like this was actually sick beck is better
- 19:20Speaker 1: than the kitchen that we had installed in our primary residence.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Like I was actually a little bit frustrated, Like yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 1: I was like is this a joke? Like this is
- 19:30Speaker 1: so good, Like why didn't we just put this in
- 19:33Speaker 1: our other house?
- 19:33Speaker 3: Like we would have saved literally thousands of dollars.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Anyway, I will upload videos because even like the draw runners,
- 19:39Speaker 1: like you know those fancy like soft clothes, we don't
- 19:43Speaker 1: have that in our actual house because it was too expensive.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, like that upgrade's not worth it, Like,
- 19:49Speaker 1: no worries, It's just an automatic feature in my kaboodle kitchen,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and it was so much cheaper, you know when you
- 19:55Speaker 1: just like, I'm not even trying to brag about them
- 19:57Speaker 1: because we're working with them. I'm just really upset.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Yeah, kicking yourself a little bit.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I know.
- 20:02Speaker 1: So obviously I feel like flat packs have come a
- 20:05Speaker 1: really long way because these are beautiful. They're also designed
- 20:09Speaker 1: to be user friendly, Like I mean, my relationship with
- 20:12Speaker 1: my dad's still intact and we put some together. So
- 20:15Speaker 1: that's a pretty good deal. That is huge, and they
- 20:17Speaker 1: obviously have a really big range of options for whole
- 20:20Speaker 1: heaps of different price points. So the question of v
- 20:23Speaker 1: did you go with the cheapest option, No, we didn't.
- 20:26Speaker 1: We went with like I would say, the very middle
- 20:29Speaker 1: definitely a budget kitchen in comparison to like, you know,
- 20:32Speaker 1: everything else we could have done. But we definitely did
- 20:35Speaker 1: a few upgrades, so like instead of just having the
- 20:37Speaker 1: playing cupboard doors, we went with the ones with the
- 20:39Speaker 1: cute like you know, outlines on the edges. Yeah, and
- 20:43Speaker 1: made things a little bit cuter, which obviously adds a
- 20:45Speaker 1: little bit of price to it, but it was definitely
- 20:48Speaker 1: worth it. Like, it's definitely something that I'm like, I'm
- 20:51Speaker 1: really glad with the decisions that we made. And I mean,
- 20:53Speaker 1: to my other very important point that I made earlier,
- 20:56Speaker 1: one thing that we did do that wasn't DIY is
- 21:00Speaker 1: paying professionals to do things that we can't do. So
- 21:03Speaker 1: obviously I paid for an electrician and I paid for
- 21:06Speaker 1: a plumber because that's not something that you should ever
- 21:08Speaker 1: play with. But it's also something that you don't want
- 21:10Speaker 1: to mess up because imagine being like, you know what
- 21:13Speaker 1: I can do my own plumbing, You're going to ruin
- 21:15Speaker 1: your whole kitchen. If it went wrong, that's own electricity.
- 21:18Speaker 1: You're probably going to kill yourself. Like that's not a
- 21:21Speaker 1: good idea. Endure it exactly. And I just feel like
- 21:24Speaker 1: that's where you should be spending money. But if you're
- 21:26Speaker 1: going to spend money on trades like that, do what
- 21:29Speaker 1: I did. Shop around. We got a few different quotes
- 21:32Speaker 1: before settling on the electricians, and you know, the trades
- 21:35Speaker 1: that we wanted to work with, because I really just
- 21:37Speaker 1: wanted to make sure that we were working with people
- 21:40Speaker 1: who weren't taking advantage. Yes, and I don't think anyone
- 21:43Speaker 1: that we got quotes from was, but I feel like
- 21:45Speaker 1: I've heard so many stories recently of trades being absolutely
- 21:49Speaker 1: overwhelmed with work that they're overquoting and just being like, well,
- 21:52Speaker 1: I'm not doing it unless you pay me triple and
- 21:54Speaker 1: stuff like that, and then you think that that's the
- 21:56Speaker 1: norm and that's not it. So I feel like, yeah,
- 21:59Speaker 1: trades really good if you've got friends who are renovated,
- 22:02Speaker 1: like ask them for recommendations. If you don't have recommendations.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Local Facebook groups are really good for being like, hey,
- 22:08Speaker 1: can anyone recommend like a sparky in my area? And
- 22:12Speaker 1: they usually go, oh, yeah, my husband does it, and
- 22:14Speaker 1: then you can like look them up and see what
- 22:15Speaker 1: their reviews are like, which is really helpful.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Yes, so true. Even like, just tell everyone you've ever
- 22:20Speaker 3: run into in your entire life about what you're doing,
- 22:22Speaker 3: because there'll be someone who says, I've got a friend
- 22:25Speaker 3: who does this, I've got a friend who does.
- 22:26Speaker 1: That exactly and post on Instagram. On Instagram, don't get
- 22:29Speaker 1: me wrong, even if you have like three hundred followers,
- 22:32Speaker 1: someone's gonna see and be like, oh, actually I did this,
- 22:35Speaker 1: or I've got a mate who does this, Like yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 1: ask for recommendations, like I feel like that's the best
- 22:40Speaker 1: way to get anything totally.
- 22:42Speaker 3: You need someone who's a real person who actually has
- 22:44Speaker 3: experience with the same thing to tell you what their
- 22:46Speaker 3: experience is. Like, it's the best way to do it
- 22:49Speaker 3: just word of mouth.
- 22:49Speaker 1: So from my perspective, get some rough quotes before you
- 22:52Speaker 1: even purchase the kitchen or before you actually do anything,
- 22:56Speaker 1: because I think in our heads we go, all right,
- 22:59Speaker 1: we want to do this renovation, and I've done some googling,
- 23:02Speaker 1: and you know it's going to cost ABC and D.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Call the electrician, call the sparky, explain what you're doing,
- 23:09Speaker 1: and go, hey, can you give me a rough estimate?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Just budgeting it all together? Like really want to use
- 23:14Speaker 1: you because one of the things that we got told
- 23:17Speaker 1: and in my head this made sense. Right, So we've
- 23:19Speaker 1: demoed the kitchen back. Our floors need resanding and repolishing
- 23:24Speaker 1: because they were dank. Oh, upload a photo and I'll
- 23:26Speaker 1: show your photo after this of the floors. They're a
- 23:28Speaker 1: completely different color now because of how old they were.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Like the house that we're renovating is from the late
- 23:34Speaker 1: sixties and they're the same floorboards. Quite clearly they'd never
- 23:38Speaker 1: been resealed. The celant had worn off, and then they
- 23:41Speaker 1: were completely water damaged, dirt like disgusting. They've gone from
- 23:45Speaker 1: basically being a dark dark brown, which I thought, Okay,
- 23:48Speaker 1: we'll just reseal them. That brown's not too bad to
- 23:51Speaker 1: like a light beech wood. And I was shook. But
- 23:54Speaker 1: in my head, what happens is you remove the kitchen,
- 23:57Speaker 1: then you do the floors, and then you put the
- 23:59Speaker 1: brand your kitchen on top.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, no, what do you mean?
- 24:02Speaker 1: Well that's what I thought. And when I called the
- 24:05Speaker 1: electrician and was like, yeah, I need you to like
- 24:07Speaker 1: change the power here and here, and we've got the
- 24:09Speaker 1: sanders coming on this day. He's like, why are you
- 24:11Speaker 1: doing the floors? I said, well, we've got the kitchen
- 24:14Speaker 1: to then install on top. He's like, no, absolutely not.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Do not polish your brand new flaws and then have
- 24:20Speaker 1: a whole heap of like trade going in and out.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Your floors are going to get dinted, they're going to
- 24:25Speaker 1: get damaged. You know, do a light sand install your
- 24:28Speaker 1: kitchen and then get them to do the floors around
- 24:31Speaker 1: the kitchen. Oh that makes sense, doesn't it. But I
- 24:34Speaker 1: didn't know that. So having these conversations before you actually
- 24:38Speaker 1: do anything I think is really helpful.
- 24:40Speaker 3: In my mind, I was like, what is it floating?
- 24:42Speaker 2: No?
- 24:42Speaker 1: No, no, we just didn't put the kickboards in at
- 24:44Speaker 1: the bottom, which was really easy to do because we
- 24:46Speaker 1: can install them later. But they're going to come in.
- 24:49Speaker 1: They're going to do the floors because we're paying a
- 24:50Speaker 1: professional to do that. I do not trust myself to
- 24:53Speaker 1: do the floors. We can do the kitchen, we can't
- 24:55Speaker 1: do the floors, and then we will install the kickboards
- 24:57Speaker 1: after the floors have been properly sealed. But he was like,
- 24:59Speaker 1: you know, not going to drag flat pack boxes up
- 25:02Speaker 1: and down those stairs and then across your floorboards exactly.
- 25:07Speaker 1: He's like you're gonna get gougers, You're gonna get scratches.
- 25:09Speaker 1: He's like you're gonna get glue and stuff like from
- 25:12Speaker 1: all the tiling on the floor. Like, just don't do it.
- 25:14Speaker 1: And I was like, I wish I had you earlier. Yeah,
- 25:17Speaker 1: I mean I did this time. But when you're getting
- 25:20Speaker 1: your budget together, it's kind of like a budget slash
- 25:22Speaker 1: project plan. So you're not only making a plan for
- 25:25Speaker 1: like what you have to pay for sure, but like
- 25:27Speaker 1: you're making a plan for when that process goes in
- 25:30Speaker 1: because it's one thing to go. I can afford it. Okay,
- 25:32Speaker 1: but when are the trades available? Is the trade that
- 25:35Speaker 1: you want not available for another month? What does that
- 25:39Speaker 1: look like? Because for us, we got a couple of quotes,
- 25:42Speaker 1: and the quotes were not only like you know, here
- 25:44Speaker 1: are the different price points, but they were also like, oh,
- 25:47Speaker 1: we booked out for three months so we could do
- 25:48Speaker 1: it here. And I was like, oh, you are cheaper,
- 25:51Speaker 1: but it's not worth waiting because I need to get
- 25:53Speaker 1: this done sooner rather than later. Yes, that makes sense.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yeah, totally.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 25:57Speaker 3: I think I need to go to Google kickboards and
- 25:59Speaker 3: maybe like practice my sissy kick Yeah, okay, kickboards are
- 26:02Speaker 3: not what you're expecting. Okay, given you have just said, Sizzy,
- 26:06Speaker 3: keep explain a kickboard.
- 26:08Speaker 1: To you in the break, and then when we get back,
- 26:10Speaker 1: we're going to have a deeper chat about budgets and
- 26:12Speaker 1: materials in all of that fun renovating.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Stuff fun see soon. Welcome back everyone, and we're talking
- 26:21Speaker 3: about renovation on a budget with someone who has just
- 26:24Speaker 3: been through this. Victoria Devine, Hello, that's me. I want
- 26:28Speaker 3: to talk materials now. How can we save here?
- 26:30Speaker 1: All right? So I feel like I've done a really
- 26:33Speaker 1: good job this time of like keeping everything within budget. Obviously,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you to always shop around for
- 26:40Speaker 1: discounts and like codes or price matching. Often brands won't
- 26:45Speaker 1: advertise that they do price matching, so I will like
- 26:48Speaker 1: google the brand and then price matching and see what
- 26:51Speaker 1: comes up on their website. Because often you'll find their
- 26:54Speaker 1: terms and conditions and they'll say we do price match
- 26:57Speaker 1: And then some brands even do like price beat, like
- 27:00Speaker 1: you know Bunnings. They obviously say we'll beat it by
- 27:03Speaker 1: five percent. That's a money win. Yeah, you hold them
- 27:06Speaker 1: to that. I see them like, I think it's really
- 27:08Speaker 1: important to have a little bit of conviction around keeping
- 27:11Speaker 1: to your budget and it can really save you. The
- 27:14Speaker 1: one thing I would do is look around it recycled
- 27:16Speaker 1: or leftover materials. So I know that that sounds a
- 27:20Speaker 1: bit lame, but we have in our kitchen that we're
- 27:23Speaker 1: renovating a very small patch for where we want tiles right,
- 27:27Speaker 1: and I was like, oh my gosh, what am I
- 27:30Speaker 1: going to do. I got some quotes for some tiles
- 27:33Speaker 1: and it was really expensive. I didn't realize how expensive
- 27:35Speaker 1: they were, and I was like, I don't know this
- 27:37Speaker 1: is meant to be a budget renovation, Like I don't
- 27:38Speaker 1: want to go buy bougie tiles. But then obviously, Beck,
- 27:42Speaker 1: if you met me, like you show me a cheap
- 27:45Speaker 1: option and a bougie option, and somehow I will always go,
- 27:49Speaker 1: I want the boogie option, even if you haven't told
- 27:51Speaker 1: me the price points, Like I'll just immediately look at
- 27:53Speaker 1: it and be like, well, that's the one I like,
- 27:54Speaker 1: isn't it. It's the first expensive have it I have? Anyway,
- 27:59Speaker 1: I found some tiles on Facebook Marketplace that were left
- 28:02Speaker 1: over from a renovation. I had to do some calculations
- 28:05Speaker 1: to work out because they had said how many tiles
- 28:07Speaker 1: they had, and I found the tiles that I wanted
- 28:11Speaker 1: from tile Cloud on Facebook Marketplace.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Oh that's so paff and it was enough and enough.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Yeah, it covers the whole space. And I mean, I'm
- 28:19Speaker 1: going to have to go buy the grout and stuff,
- 28:20Speaker 1: but that's something that I'm going to do myself because
- 28:22Speaker 1: it's such a small spot in our kitchen that I
- 28:25Speaker 1: think will work really well. So have a look on
- 28:27Speaker 1: Facebook Marketplace because so often people buy more of what
- 28:31Speaker 1: they needed because they're like, I don't know, obviously, rolling
- 28:35Speaker 1: in money, and they're like, oh, I'll just get extra
- 28:37Speaker 1: tiles that I don't need, but they pop them on
- 28:40Speaker 1: Facebook Marketplace. It's like how I put our kitchen on
- 28:43Speaker 1: Facebook Marketplace and got rid of it. Yes, and I
- 28:45Speaker 1: mean obviously massive shout out to like Facebook Marketplace and
- 28:48Speaker 1: gum Tree in general, because you can save a whole
- 28:51Speaker 1: heap of money. The other thing I did beck was
- 28:54Speaker 1: I needed new appliances, so the appliances that were in
- 28:58Speaker 1: our kitchen were not savable still using the same fridge
- 29:01Speaker 1: that we had, but I needed to purchase a new
- 29:04Speaker 1: gas cook top because ours was cooked in the punt
- 29:07Speaker 1: and an oven and a gas cook top. I think
- 29:10Speaker 1: we ended up spending about twelve hundred dollars on it,
- 29:13Speaker 1: which was a lot more than I thought that they were,
- 29:15Speaker 1: but like that's how renovation goes. You end up realizing
- 29:18Speaker 1: that things are so much more expensive than you'd anticipated.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I was like wanting this really nice looking oven to
- 29:25Speaker 1: go under it, and it was like three thousand dollars back. Like,
- 29:28Speaker 1: don't get me wrong, you can get cheaper ovens, but
- 29:31Speaker 1: I found one online from a company that does refurbished ovens,
- 29:35Speaker 1: and it cost me six hundred and fifty bucks.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Oh my god, that's so good.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and we just picked it up who was in Frankston,
- 29:41Speaker 1: which was close. I mean Frankston. Is that a red
- 29:44Speaker 1: flag buying secondhand things there? I don't know. I did it.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It's coming up to me. The price was worth it.
- 29:50Speaker 1: I had sent it to my sparky first and said
- 29:52Speaker 1: do you have any concerns and he'd actually said NAHVI,
- 29:55Speaker 1: like they're actually really good. They just refurbished things that
- 29:58Speaker 1: have been pulled out of display homes. And I was like, okay,
- 30:01Speaker 1: so you're telling me that this hasn't been used at all,
- 30:03Speaker 1: like great. So it ended up costing me six hundred
- 30:06Speaker 1: and fifty dollars for our oven instead of like close
- 30:09Speaker 1: to three thousand. So like shop around and like I
- 30:13Speaker 1: think that people often assume I'm buying a secondhand oven.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Well you might think that that means it's like one
- 30:19Speaker 1: that someone's used a million times and it's not that good,
- 30:22Speaker 1: so you don't even explore the option. This oven does
- 30:25Speaker 1: not even look like it's been used right, like brand
- 30:28Speaker 1: new basically, And I mean disclaimer, I don't get the
- 30:31Speaker 1: warranty that would have gone with it, given I'm saving
- 30:34Speaker 1: so much money, and it costs me six hundred and
- 30:36Speaker 1: fifty dollars. I was really happy to, you know, take
- 30:38Speaker 1: that risk absolutely, and it's being installed professionally, so we're
- 30:42Speaker 1: getting all of these things. He's installing it, like, I'm
- 30:45Speaker 1: not doing that on my own, but I did source
- 30:47Speaker 1: something that was much cheaper. The other thing I wanted
- 30:49Speaker 1: to say was look at revamping the materials that you
- 30:52Speaker 1: already have in your home. So like flooring is a
- 30:54Speaker 1: really good example. Do you hate the carpet, rip it up?
- 30:57Speaker 1: See what's underneath there? Like, don't get me wrong, don't
- 30:59Speaker 1: rip it up if you can't afford to replace the carpet,
- 31:02Speaker 1: But are there floorboards under there that could be polished up?
- 31:05Speaker 1: If you looked at my floors beck before we had
- 31:08Speaker 1: resanded them, you would have been like, well, via you
- 31:11Speaker 1: getting new floorboards put down, because those are awful. And
- 31:13Speaker 1: we genuinely had to consider that as an option because
- 31:17Speaker 1: I wasn't sure how they would come up. But we
- 31:20Speaker 1: got a good flooring guy in. Again, we got a
- 31:22Speaker 1: couple of quotes before settling on one flooring guy, and
- 31:25Speaker 1: he came in and said, yeah, you're right, there is
- 31:27Speaker 1: a fair bit of damage here. But I can just
- 31:30Speaker 1: replace those boards and then we can sand everything and
- 31:33Speaker 1: it'll look great.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I was like, a great idea, but I.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Think it's really important to not just jump to get
- 31:38Speaker 1: Oh that's absolutely cooked. We're going to have to replace it.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And now once we've sanded it, we're actually able to
- 31:43Speaker 1: get a color that I like even more than what
- 31:45Speaker 1: I thought we were working within. So that's a money win,
- 31:48Speaker 1: I think. Because to replace the floorboards in our house,
- 31:51Speaker 1: I did get a quote for that too because I
- 31:53Speaker 1: wanted to be able to share it. It was going
- 31:55Speaker 1: to be about eleven and a half thousand dollars. Oh
- 31:58Speaker 1: my godness, to be so much. Yeah, So to get
- 32:02Speaker 1: the upstairs of our house re floorboarded, the quote was
- 32:06Speaker 1: eleven grand. That was including installation, just to be really clear,
- 32:10Speaker 1: but to have them standed back and re polished, it's
- 32:13Speaker 1: going to cost us two thousand dollars and that includes
- 32:17Speaker 1: the floorboards that he's fixing, and he's charging me two
- 32:20Speaker 1: hundred dollars per floorboard, which is obviously a lot for
- 32:23Speaker 1: a piece of wood, but it's like him sourcing wood
- 32:25Speaker 1: that matches and then like installing it. So I think
- 32:27Speaker 1: that that's a pretty sure deal, but like two grand
- 32:29Speaker 1: versus eleven and a half, like, be for real. That's
- 32:32Speaker 1: a really good saving. Be for real. I think it's
- 32:36Speaker 1: also important as well, because my husband and I were
- 32:38Speaker 1: so certain that we were going to have to put
- 32:40Speaker 1: different floorboards over the top, but we said, you know what,
- 32:43Speaker 1: we should just get the flooring guy that does the
- 32:45Speaker 1: standing and stuff out to look at them first and
- 32:48Speaker 1: do a bit of a test before we pulled the
- 32:49Speaker 1: trigger on that. And we're really glad that we did.
- 32:51Speaker 3: That's so good. Did you have any lino in there?
- 32:53Speaker 1: There was lino. It had been pulled out before we
- 32:57Speaker 1: moved in, but the adhesive from the liner was still
- 33:00Speaker 1: on our floors. So like when I say it was bad, beck,
- 33:04Speaker 1: like that's how bad it was, Like the adhesive lines
- 33:07Speaker 1: and all the glue marks were still there, like no
- 33:09Speaker 1: one had cleaned it up. They'd just like ripped out
- 33:11Speaker 1: the lino and been like, oh it's good now. It
- 33:15Speaker 1: was not good, bad, and it's not good. And I
- 33:17Speaker 1: think the other thing that really annoyed me about it
- 33:20Speaker 1: is the flaws just consistently felt dirty. Yeah, because like
- 33:23Speaker 1: you're just looking at glue and adhesive and like all
- 33:26Speaker 1: of the little bits of stuff that had stuck to
- 33:28Speaker 1: the adhesive over the years made it look black. It
- 33:30Speaker 1: was horrendous.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, lino is no good for anyone.
- 33:33Speaker 1: No rip out.
- 33:34Speaker 2: You lie.
- 33:35Speaker 1: I know there's probably floorboards under there, because that's what
- 33:37Speaker 1: the Boomers did. They put the lino down.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Why they do that?
- 33:40Speaker 1: I don't know why they did that. You ask them,
- 33:42Speaker 1: not me. But anyway, I think that having a think
- 33:46Speaker 1: about every option and actually exploring it a bit, even
- 33:49Speaker 1: if you don't think it's the one for you, could
- 33:51Speaker 1: end up saving you a whole heap of money. So
- 33:53Speaker 1: you're not spending money to get opinions. You're spending money
- 33:57Speaker 1: when you really have an outcome that makes sense for you.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Do you know how upset I would have been if
- 34:01Speaker 1: we had installed the floorboards, because, like Beck, you and
- 34:05Speaker 1: I both know, if I had gone and gotten a
- 34:06Speaker 1: quote from a dude who installs floorboards, and he came
- 34:09Speaker 1: to my house and he's like, yeah, cool, like I'll
- 34:12Speaker 1: give you this quote, which he did. He didn't mention
- 34:14Speaker 1: that we could re polish them all. Then they'd come
- 34:16Speaker 1: up nicely. Sure, Like he's not going to mention that
- 34:19Speaker 1: and be like, oh, Beck, did you know you could
- 34:21Speaker 1: save heaps of money if you'd actually just not employed
- 34:24Speaker 1: me or paid me. Yeah, but don't pay me, go
- 34:26Speaker 1: play this other guy. So do the research yourself. And
- 34:29Speaker 1: I know that that sounds overwhelming because it can feel
- 34:31Speaker 1: like a lot, but it's saving us thousands of dollars.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Okay, that's really cheeky, but also is cheeky.
- 34:37Speaker 1: But also like if you do a job and then
- 34:40Speaker 1: you've asked me for a quote, I'm not going to
- 34:42Speaker 1: try and talk you out of it.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Via the Sunder's episode, you talked about the importance of
- 34:45Speaker 3: project managing. Let's finish with that.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I love project management. It's one of my I
- 34:51Speaker 1: guess strong points you could say, because I like to
- 34:54Speaker 1: do a budget, but I also like to have like
- 34:56Speaker 1: the stages at which that budget is going to be
- 35:00Speaker 1: and on what and where and how. And I think
- 35:02Speaker 1: it's important that while you can do things bit by bit,
- 35:06Speaker 1: and I definitely would recommend that if you're renovating, like
- 35:09Speaker 1: you know, do it room by room or level by level,
- 35:11Speaker 1: starting with the floors and doing the whole house. For example,
- 35:15Speaker 1: had I just decided to do the kitchen right, it
- 35:19Speaker 1: would have cost me more money to do the kitchen
- 35:21Speaker 1: now and then you know, wait and then do the
- 35:24Speaker 1: laundroom and then do the floors in the loundroom. So
- 35:26Speaker 1: we're doing the flaws for the entire house at the
- 35:30Speaker 1: same time, right after the kitchen has been installed. But
- 35:34Speaker 1: we're not doing the bathrooms yet. But we're going to
- 35:37Speaker 1: get to the bathrooms at some stage, and we're going
- 35:38Speaker 1: to get to the laundroom and you know, change up
- 35:41Speaker 1: stuff in there, but we're definitely not doing it at
- 35:43Speaker 1: the same time as the kitchen. But because the flaws
- 35:47Speaker 1: are such a big task, we're just like one and done.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I don't want to pay someone to come out and
- 35:52Speaker 1: just do the kitchen and then come out again and
- 35:54Speaker 1: have more service fees and more charges. Just like quote
- 35:58Speaker 1: me for the whole thing and get it done. So
- 36:00Speaker 1: I think that project management is really important because it's
- 36:03Speaker 1: going to tell you like when you can do things
- 36:05Speaker 1: and what your budget for things looks like. So we
- 36:08Speaker 1: are budgeting at the moment to do our bathrooms, but
- 36:12Speaker 1: we're not doing our bathrooms yet because I'm kind of like,
- 36:14Speaker 1: I don't want to do the kitchens and the bathrooms
- 36:16Speaker 1: all at once. That's going to be really expensive. So
- 36:18Speaker 1: we're doing the kitchen now, and as you guys know,
- 36:21Speaker 1: I've posted a lot about it on social media. We've
- 36:24Speaker 1: been doing planning for that for the last what eight
- 36:27Speaker 1: months or so, right, Like I've been in and out
- 36:29Speaker 1: of Bunnings a million times because I couldn't decide which
- 36:31Speaker 1: white cabinets I wanted, and like, they have the samples there,
- 36:34Speaker 1: so I kept going in. Like back when Gabby worked
- 36:37Speaker 1: for us, I was like dragging her in and being like,
- 36:39Speaker 1: but is this white tu cream? And She's like, no,
- 36:42Speaker 1: that's really nice, and I'd be like okay, and then
- 36:44Speaker 1: I'd settle on it, and then I'd go home and
- 36:46Speaker 1: be like, I just need to see it in person
- 36:47Speaker 1: one more time with the sample of the bench tops. Right,
- 36:51Speaker 1: So it was really nice to have a long lead
- 36:53Speaker 1: up period so that now the kitchen's in and it
- 36:56Speaker 1: is in, I'm really excited about it, and I go, yeah, no,
- 36:58Speaker 1: I know these were the right color selections for me.
- 37:01Speaker 1: But I think that being able to do things and
- 37:04Speaker 1: having a plan has helped a lot. And like, even
- 37:07Speaker 1: if you're not a spreadsheet wizard, like, there are so
- 37:10Speaker 1: many templates out there that you could use that really
- 37:12Speaker 1: help you. And I mean, we'll drop something that I
- 37:15Speaker 1: have used so that you guys can use it as well.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I mean, it's not the best thing in the entire world,
- 37:19Speaker 1: because I'm not a super professional, but I think it
- 37:21Speaker 1: does you know the job and really helps you think
- 37:24Speaker 1: about things and get on the right page. Because we
- 37:28Speaker 1: have made sure that we've like dotted all our eyes
- 37:30Speaker 1: and crossed our our t's because beck I did it
- 37:33Speaker 1: the wrong way the first time and the second time.
- 37:35Speaker 1: We are not doing that again. It's not my first rodeo,
- 37:37Speaker 1: you know, like we're just not going to fall off
- 37:39Speaker 1: the ball again.
- 37:41Speaker 3: We hope, not exactly. I don't know about you, but
- 37:44Speaker 3: I feel like it's a pretty good place to leave it.
- 37:46Speaker 1: I think it's a good place to leave it. But
- 37:47Speaker 1: also I think it's important if you're going to renovate
- 37:50Speaker 1: budget budget budget, and the best way to budget is
- 37:54Speaker 1: to be really clear about what it's going to cost.
- 37:56Speaker 1: We're not guestimating, Like if it means that you pop
- 37:59Speaker 1: on down to Reese Plumbing and spend an hour or
- 38:02Speaker 1: two looking at taps and going, oh, I thought that
- 38:05Speaker 1: the tap would cost me, you know, fifty bucks, and
- 38:08Speaker 1: going oh, actually, I've realized I like a more expensive option,
- 38:11Speaker 1: or I like something else, Like you're getting a good
- 38:13Speaker 1: idea for what your taste is as well as what
- 38:15Speaker 1: budget is because it's so easy to google, like what's
- 38:18Speaker 1: the average cost for renovating a kitchen and that will
- 38:21Speaker 1: come up, but like you don't know what you're actually
- 38:24Speaker 1: going to choose or what that's actually going to look
- 38:26Speaker 1: like go down to Bunnings and have a look at
- 38:28Speaker 1: the kitchens there, Like they have a full kerboodle installation
- 38:31Speaker 1: in most Bunnings that you can go down to and
- 38:34Speaker 1: see what the quality is, Like you might go far out,
- 38:37Speaker 1: this is actually great, I do want to put this
- 38:39Speaker 1: in my house. But you can have a look at
- 38:40Speaker 1: what the different cabnet options are going to be, and
- 38:43Speaker 1: you know, you might be renovating on a budget, but
- 38:45Speaker 1: also on a really short timeframe, like maybe you're like,
- 38:48Speaker 1: oh my gosh, I've got to lease this property out,
- 38:50Speaker 1: but the kitchen's got to change. Like have a chat
- 38:53Speaker 1: to them there, because they have off the shelf options,
- 38:55Speaker 1: so like what can you use or what's going to
- 38:57Speaker 1: take a little bit longer to order in the cabinet
- 39:00Speaker 1: draws I pitched, we had to order they weren't off
- 39:03Speaker 1: the shelf but the cabinet frames were off the shelf,
- 39:05Speaker 1: So I think it's really important to just understand not
- 39:08Speaker 1: only your budget, but what that timeframe looks like. Yeah,
- 39:12Speaker 1: let's leave it there, because I feel like I've spoken
- 39:13Speaker 1: about flaws a lot, and i'd like to talk about
- 39:16Speaker 1: coffee with you. Is that okay? I'd love that. We
- 39:19Speaker 1: don't have any more time today, but I have loved
- 39:21Speaker 1: chatting to you Beck. We'll see you next week.
