Transcript
- 0:00Hello, I'm Reef Quail, Managing Director of NRF in AIPAC and in
- 0:05the Middle East, and this is five things Friday Asia Pacific
- 0:10style. Hello.
- 0:24Hello. Hello Asia Pacific style.
- 0:28Asia Pacific style. I think we I need to add some
- 0:30accompaniment to. It I love it and you and you've
- 0:32already started the weekend. You're in the bar.
- 0:35Fantastic. It's nice.
- 0:38That's the way to live. Yeah, Retail.
- 0:41Such is life, yes? OK, well listen, since you're
- 0:44such a party mood, why don't you go first?
- 0:46What's top of mind for you this week?
- 0:48OK. I recently spoke at the Asia
- 0:51Retail Summit and I spoke about answer engine optimization, AEO
- 0:57and you know, and only like maybe say 5 people in the crowd
- 1:02of 200, we're like nodding away. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we've heard
- 1:05about that. Are you doing something about
- 1:06it? No.
- 1:07And the rest are like what? What?
- 1:11And I say, you've heard of SEO, Yes, search engine optimization.
- 1:14So AEO is answer engine optimization.
- 1:18And they're like, what? So, you know, the, the thing
- 1:23here is with the fact that how we are using GPT so much, right?
- 1:28And never considered how actually that is going to work
- 1:30for our business. So AEO will get us chosen.
- 1:35And so how many businesses in retail are actually winning at
- 1:39this? So marketplaces are clearly
- 1:42marketplaces are leading. So we've got the shoppies and
- 1:45the Lazada because they have very structured data, the price,
- 1:49the reviews, the inventory and then AI pulls them very easily
- 1:53when recommending products. So that's really good.
- 1:55And then strong brands and I wanna be able to say I'm looking
- 1:59at Nike. Nike's looking good, AKI is
- 2:01looking good because AI trust them.
- 2:04These are brands have been around for good and so they
- 2:07don't have the the agents don't have to think twice about taking
- 2:11their recommendations or answers or this kind of stuff that they
- 2:14put out. But then the other retailer like
- 2:18Walmart for example, that can connect like say data and a
- 2:21little bit of intent. I think intent data is something
- 2:24that is still missing from a lot of retailers thinking about what
- 2:28is going to the future of retail as well as transaction.
- 2:32I think that is where we are a little bit more weak.
- 2:37So I think there's a lot of catch up to be done.
- 2:40It is really about figuring out the answers to questions that
- 2:45perhaps you now need to design. And I love it, Yeah.
- 2:49I love it. I mean, sorry, gum Reef.
- 2:51I was going to say I was looking at and this is they call it the
- 2:55online to online barrier where so it's the it's the
- 2:58conversation between I am like it's not the stage before I get
- 3:03to the store and not be paid before I get to the physical
- 3:06store. I do answer brand in store.
- 3:11And so this content piece, it's called the online to online
- 3:15broader. I was reading some and it's the
- 3:17other day and it's all about the content.
- 3:18And so your contact's being indexed if you like it or not,
- 3:21but it's actually it's actually the craft of writing the contact
- 3:25and Prem. And because you see in in
- 3:28markets like the younger markets like the Philippines and
- 3:33Indonesia where it's very Gen Z LED, this is where this sort of
- 3:38behaviour is manifesting like 35 to 40% of all query starts at an
- 3:45agent, all right? And so if you're not a like and
- 3:50the whole world should be watching these two markets,
- 3:53right? Because no one has youth like
- 3:56these like Philippines and Indonesia, no one's got it like
- 3:59these two markets and it's mobile LED.
- 4:01So it's all very digital and it's, it's, it's, it's, yeah,
- 4:05it's, it's, we're talking like up to 40% of the, the beginning
- 4:09of the journey is done this way for this demographic.
- 4:12It's true now, especially now and the way they're asking the
- 4:15questions and especially Philippines because they are
- 4:18using English, right and therefore the the way to
- 4:22understand it, it's way more profound and important.
- 4:26And I think a lot of retailers are looking out.
- 4:29So this is something we want to remind everyone.
- 4:31Start now. Sure, Reef.
- 4:35What's next for you, Sir? Well, I am a little bit
- 4:39underdressed today because I'm a bit tired and emotional.
- 4:43Yesterday I went to China shop. Yeah, always emotional, highly
- 4:46emotional. I went to, I went to Hangzhou
- 4:49yesterday. I got back this morning.
- 4:51I'm in Singapore now. I went to China shop so have a
- 4:54look around as a guest of the Chinese Chain Store Franchise
- 4:58Association. Lovely bunch of people, great
- 5:00friends of NRF, APAC and what I came back with was 11 clear fact
- 5:07that has changed over the last 24 months.
- 5:09Chinese retailers and Chinese exhibitors and tech companies
- 5:14have Southeast Asia fairly and squarely in their So you're a
- 5:20retailer, all right, Expect some Chinese friends to arrive at
- 5:24your doorstep. And if you're, if you're a
- 5:26retailer looking for new tech, expect the Chinese technology
- 5:29companies to be there. I mean, a lot of them are
- 5:30setting up in Singapore, you know, as as, as head OPS in, in
- 5:34Singapore, but they're coming. And, and what I was talking to
- 5:38exhibitors when I was talking to big to leaders of, of big
- 5:42retailers in China. Southeast Asia is the place.
- 5:46It's 700. They see it as 700,000 people in
- 5:50the region in Southeast Asia alone and a tremendous amount of
- 5:53wealth creation. You know, probably we're
- 5:56talking, we're talking the region powering up in terms of
- 5:59wealth, wealth over the next three or four years.
- 6:02I mean that that you're thinking yes, and that's why you need to
- 6:04come to NRFA pack. It was absolutely and there's a
- 6:08lot. Last year we hardly had a
- 6:11handful of retailers. I think we're going to have, I
- 6:14think China will be our biggest market outside of Singapore this
- 6:17year. In in in ref.
- 6:18Amazing, amazing. It's going, it's going mental.
- 6:22And oh, I can't wait to exchange ideas with them.
- 6:24Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 6:26And then and they are, they are, they want to do business.
- 6:29It's easy to, it's forthright. They're direct.
- 6:31They love to, they love to. No, it's, it's also, I have AI
- 6:34have a great time every what time I go up there.
- 6:36But I think that there's a transformation.
- 6:38I think, you know, the Chinese economy two years ago was
- 6:41probably trucking along pretty well.
- 6:42That slowed. And so they're looking for that
- 6:45next tick up and that's where they're looking at.
- 6:47They're eyeing Southeast Asia as an opportunity.
- 6:50Fantastic. Yeah.
- 6:51So loyalty tag is a different level when it comes to China.
- 6:55It's crazy. And then you and then you, and
- 6:58then you overlay the Super apps of WeChat and Ali and Ali Pay
- 7:01and all of a sudden you're like. Yeah, I, I absolutely, I don't
- 7:06think China has to worry. Any retailing in China has to
- 7:09worry about technology to stand out.
- 7:11But if you're a, if you're a retailer in Shanghai with a
- 7:15market of 22,000,000 consumers, how are you going to stand out?
- 7:20Because it's not technology. Fantastic.
- 7:22OK, you and what's your, what's your second one?
- 7:25So now that we've talked about China, whatever I'm going to say
- 7:27next, I, I feel a little shy, I'm going to talk It's.
- 7:31Not like you. No, no.
- 7:32But it is true. But you know, zero click is a,
- 7:35is a conversation that most marketeers are having right now.
- 7:38We are talking about how to help your customers get to the end
- 7:42goal quicker and faster. So you're removing a lot of
- 7:45anything that creates friction. So if they have to search that
- 7:50you just recommend it. If you have to compare, then you
- 7:53just kind of like build up your trust.
- 7:55If you have to decide, then you know, you you kind of pre decide
- 7:58for them and just give them like, oh, OK, we have
- 8:00streamlined already 3. So why do you choose one?
- 8:02You know, so the lesser the click, the better it is until
- 8:06like, you know, there is as little click as possible.
- 8:09But then the question is also, isn't this creating a lot more
- 8:14questions in the consumers and customers thinking about, oh,
- 8:18can I really trust you? How do we then go towards making
- 8:23sure that the customers actually do feel like, OK, I can trust
- 8:26this brand irregardless of how many clicks to get there or
- 8:32because I trust you already. So whether you have 5 clicks or
- 8:357 clicks, actually it doesn't matter because I will understand
- 8:38that it's worth my while to do the click.
- 8:41So this is a huge conversation amongst marketeers really.
- 8:45And I thought that while we are, you know, looking at China,
- 8:50coming up with tech that was crazy.
- 8:52And then here we are having such a conversation that's like,
- 8:55we're like a babies. Babies, Yeah.
- 8:58And when and, and, and you for that point if the Chinese
- 9:01retailers are coming in the way they're talking about, we're
- 9:04going to have to get good quickly because they are good,
- 9:08they're very good. And it's also availability of
- 9:11tag, to be really honest. So I think if China's tag is
- 9:15written in English to be to begin with, it's really going to
- 9:19make it so much more accessible for all the other countries
- 9:22around the world. Yeah.
- 9:24I remember talking to you, you and when we first got to know
- 9:27each other and your biggest challenge in Malaysia was
- 9:30finding the tech. Still the same problem, still
- 9:36the same problem. I mean, for me, it's always
- 9:38going to be what kind of tech outside that could come in.
- 9:42And then we talk about security and then we talk about trust and
- 9:45then we talk about can this be done in our environment instead
- 9:48of, you know, needing to follow it back to China.
- 9:51So that's something that we can't do and we won't do.
- 9:53So the trust Lia is quite important.
- 9:56So I think the Chinese need to really look at English, need to
- 10:00look at security, need to look being able to do in other
- 10:03environments aside from their own proprietary ones.
- 10:06Yeah. OK, cool.
- 10:07Fantastic. Moving on to you Ruth for your
- 10:094th 1. I met some of the leadership
- 10:11from a brand called Chagi. Now Chagi if you live in
- 10:14Southeast Asia, you are well familiar with this brand.
- 10:17OK, so Chagi has was founded in 2017 and in a regional tonic
- 10:24called Yunnan, which is famous for tea.
- 10:27And so so Chagi has now in every Southeast Asian market.
- 10:32This is a their flagship store in in in Indonesia, but they're
- 10:37in Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia
- 10:43and one other one. Many other locations.
- 10:48Malaysia. Malaysia.
- 10:49Well, how could I forget Malaysia?
- 10:50No, no, I was great to see it. I was just looking for a bit.
- 10:52I knew it, but. So this this is these there's a
- 10:56once again. So start let's start from from
- 10:58the top. They're only it's really only,
- 11:01you know, they're really only since founded in 2017.
- 11:04So this company's only been around for what, 7 or 8 years?
- 11:10It's for lovers of tea, it's for lovers of tea and it's obviously
- 11:15very much rooted in China, but it's the next generation and of
- 11:18of tea they have got. So if I look at their their
- 11:22website and I'm going to have a look at it now, actually there's
- 11:24a global growth it's. About real tea, real flavours,
- 11:29real tea. They take it very seriously.
- 11:31They are quite premium, very much.
- 11:34Around very much. The experience in store is
- 11:37pretty special too. They've got over 6000 stores
- 11:40worldwide. You know, they're, they're
- 11:44primarily in, in Asia Pacific and they have, they do have AUS
- 11:47presence as well. But this is a classy example.
- 11:51We talked about brands go east, east to West.
- 11:54So this has gone to the US, but now we're very much in, in the
- 11:57Southeast Asian region. And this is, this is a, a case
- 12:00in point of a Chinese retailer who's decided Asia Pacific is
- 12:06the place to be and this is their home.
- 12:09You can see the lighting, the minimalism, the, the, the, the,
- 12:13the design, the curves, its well-being, its premium.
- 12:16There's a, there's a whole experience and tasting in these
- 12:19places. So they're, they're, they are
- 12:21really special sort of experiences.
- 12:22And you know, you know, the, the, I mean, we talked about
- 12:26experience with baby Bunning, like, wait, you can see this
- 12:28would be paying back really quickly because they're there.
- 12:30They're really tea destination stores.
- 12:32They're for lovers of tea. I love it.
- 12:35OK, so I'll bring us home. I'm actually going to pivot.
- 12:39I was going to talk about 7-11 and how they're withdrawing or
- 12:44putting back by 12 months their their IPO for the North America
- 12:49part of 711. So they've put it back their
- 12:51closing stores anyway. I'm not going to talk about
- 12:53that. Why?
- 12:54It's just, I'm going to build on what you have said you and so
- 12:58let me go here, take this off there and this to stage.
- 13:04I've talked about this before. We tell you AI, we have an AI
- 13:09glossary. But what's really important just
- 13:11to sort of put it into context so people get an, an
- 13:15understanding AEO answer, engine optimization, which is the
- 13:19dominant new discipline. Then you've got GE, which is
- 13:22generative engine optimization, which is an extension to LLMS.
- 13:27And then the ones that's really relevant to retailers is AI
- 13:31generated experiences through Google AI mode mode.
- 13:36I'm not going to get into each one of them's and how you try
- 13:38and rank yourself up. That's a conversation for
- 13:41another one. But what's really important,
- 13:43traditional SCO is not dead. So you need to be thinking about
- 13:46how you maintain SCO and and get that up.
- 13:50And then there's Eat EEA, which in an, in a, in a world where
- 13:54everyone can differentiate between AI and it's thing that
- 13:58I've trademarked, right. So I've trademarked this in the
- 14:00UK, it's called the Human Intelligence platform.
- 14:03So I've not only have I trademarked the retail podcast,
- 14:06that's something else, but and the human differentiator is what
- 14:11the AEOSAGOSAIS look for. So they're not looking for more
- 14:17AI responses, they're looking for more human.
- 14:20And so this is where in recent, it's really important.
- 14:22Don't forget the human in the loop, although you'll be human
- 14:26will come out of the loop in some parts, but for the content
- 14:29and how you rank on all of these different areas, the human in
- 14:33the loop is the 1. So I just want.
- 14:34To approach that. So are you saying the engines
- 14:37are prioritising human generated content in the detective?
- 14:39Absolutely, 100%. And more importantly, going back
- 14:42to what Ewan was saying in terms of trust, it's content created
- 14:48who and and you know, it's like what you've seen with.
- 14:50Trusted. Yeah, trusted content created.
- 14:52Absolutely. So that's the future.
- 14:55I mean, if I'm searching, I would love my engines to tell me
- 14:58what other humans are saying, not what other engines are
- 15:01saying. Correct.
- 15:02Yes. That's what we, that's where the
- 15:04value is, and that's why in my mind, the human intelligence
- 15:06platform is where we're going to get.
- 15:08And on that bombshell, we're going to end it until.
- 15:11Next, No, no, no. I want to ask one question of
- 15:13you on your IR. 3. Now your AI got it, you had
- 15:17something like 99 terms last time.
- 15:19Have you got over the like there was a?
- 15:21100 I'm still at 94. So there's the 94 top AI terms.
- 15:29We just need some of them are we need the top 100, we need 6
- 15:32more. We might have, we might have to
- 15:34have a competition. We might have to release it to
- 15:36have a competition. Yeah, no, because what happens
- 15:39is some of them become repeated like in there there's Walmart AI
- 15:42and and stuff like that. But each one has what it means
- 15:46underneath it. So I think it's a nice resource
- 15:48for people to, if you get AI stuck, go and have a look and it
- 15:51will be there. Fantastic, fantastic.
- 15:53Until next week. Thank you.
- 15:56Thank you. Thank you.
- 15:57Bye.
