- 0:57Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast

- 1:04Speaker 2: means it is time to get our little team together
- 1:06Speaker 2: and celebrate you our incredible She's on the Money community.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Today we're going to be sharing our favorite money wins
- 1:12Speaker 2: with Miss Griucci. Bexsa Ed is going to be sharing
- 1:16Speaker 2: a few hot broke tips. We're going to be helping
- 1:18Speaker 2: to answer a juicy money dilemma, which this week is
- 1:21Speaker 2: all about managing finances as a freelancer. And you slid
- 1:25Speaker 2: into our DMS about something spicy. So we're going to
- 1:28Speaker 2: be unpacking the topic of affording a pet later on.
- 1:33Speaker 2: My friends, how have your week's been? Very nice? Nice week,
- 1:38Speaker 2: very nice week, Just chill. What have I been doing
- 1:42Speaker 2: a life away? I'm working my LifeWay basically, yes, and
- 1:45Speaker 2: also having a nice time doing it. Stealing lots of
- 1:48Speaker 2: bread from the kitchen, stealing some bread, baby, you know it.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Many toasties, toasties, fake garlic bread, you know yeah, I
- 1:54Speaker 2: like it.
- 1:55Speaker 4: I like it.
- 1:56Speaker 2: What about you, Jess?
- 1:56Speaker 4: Go ahead, just cuising along. I have a trip to
- 2:00Speaker 4: Japan coming up in the future ish, so I've been
- 2:03Speaker 4: planning that. Friends have been coming over, which is very exciting,
- 2:07Speaker 4: you know, very very very excited.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So what season you're going in?
- 2:12Speaker 4: We're going in September, which I think is their autumn.
- 2:15Speaker 4: But it's still meant to be quite warm, although potentially rainy,
- 2:19Speaker 4: so that's okay. We'll see, hoping for some good weather.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Trying to tick off. I get to kick off another
- 2:23Speaker 4: Disneyland this year because there's one in Japan.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Oh, I'm so jealous. It's just going about me. Oh
- 2:28Speaker 2: my god, that's so cool.
- 2:29Speaker 4: We can go to California, no, I.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Don't want to go anymore California. Yeah is that in California? One? Yeah?
- 2:37Speaker 4: Okay, plea can I go? You can come fun group
- 2:39Speaker 4: two to Disneyland.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I like it. I think it's a genius idea.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Sold on that.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I'm definitely using the work trip as a group troop
- 2:46Speaker 2: to Disneyland. Everyone will be like, oh my god, it's
- 2:48Speaker 2: so nice you went on holiday together, and I'll like,
- 2:50Speaker 2: we definitely weren't here for a conference.
- 2:54Speaker 4: We are serious business people.
- 2:56Speaker 2: We are serious business ladies. We've got to like speak it.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Jess and DIYer speaking at Fincon this year, which is
- 3:02Speaker 2: very very cool. I'm doing two presentations, which should be cool.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I've got my own, and then I'm on a panel
- 3:08Speaker 2: as is Jess, which I think is so fun. Wow,
- 3:12Speaker 2: look at you tax deductible Disney grip a loh, that
- 3:15Speaker 2: is so good. It's not actually true, but you know what,
- 3:19Speaker 2: we're going to pretend. Yeah, We're going to pretend. It
- 3:22Speaker 2: makes us feel much better about it because it is
- 3:24Speaker 2: technically a work trip.
- 3:25Speaker 4: How is your week?
- 3:26Speaker 2: My week was good, My week was busy. I haven't
- 3:28Speaker 2: done anything of No, I don't think I've done a
- 3:31Speaker 2: few speaking events, I've done a few podcasts. I feel
- 3:35Speaker 2: like life is good. I've been working in the background
- 3:38Speaker 2: with Gabby on getting my investing masterclass out of the door,
- 3:43Speaker 2: which I shouldn't be telling you about because we should
- 3:45Speaker 2: do like one of those marketing things where you like,
- 3:48Speaker 2: bait it, bait it, bait it check then oh, something
- 3:51Speaker 2: exciting is coming, which the team are really good at.
- 3:53Speaker 2: So like, if there is a marketing campaign on our
- 3:55Speaker 2: Instagram and it's like something exciting is coming, just know
- 3:58Speaker 2: I had nothing to do with it it because they
- 4:00Speaker 2: start at keeping secrets. Yeah, I'll just be like, it's
- 4:03Speaker 2: an investing masterclass. Yeah, that's what we've got, and Jess
- 4:06Speaker 2: is like, no, no, no, make them interested, and I'll
- 4:08Speaker 2: be like, it's about investing. But I am really excited
- 4:12Speaker 2: about that because I've been working on it for literal years.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But it didn't feel right to be putting it out
- 4:17Speaker 2: into the world, I suppose until I was not an
- 4:20Speaker 2: advisor anymore, because there are so many legalities when you
- 4:23Speaker 2: are a personal financial advisor of what you can and
- 4:26Speaker 2: can't talk about, and I was kind of feeling like
- 4:28Speaker 2: I was shooting myself in the foot. I was like, well,
- 4:31Speaker 2: there's no point launching it if I can't talk about
- 4:33Speaker 2: these things that I think are really really important. So
- 4:36Speaker 2: now I can talk about them.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Great.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Oh I'm going ham. So it's been exciting for me.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I know you guys probably could not care less, but
- 4:44Speaker 2: that's okay. That's okay. Exciting effects like I'm not listening.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Maybe that'll be the thing that helps you get started investing.
- 4:51Speaker 2: True, that's very true. I'll do a budget hashlow firstly,
- 4:55Speaker 2: we need to do that. Yeah, we'll do that first.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Jess Cricci, I want to know what's be going on
- 5:00Speaker 2: in our community. What are your community money wins of
- 5:03Speaker 2: the week.
- 5:04Speaker 4: My first win this week comes from Maya, who said
- 5:07Speaker 4: future money Wins slash huge life win. After searching for
- 5:10Speaker 4: almost a year, our offer for a beautiful house just
- 5:13Speaker 4: got accepted and we just exchanged contracts last Tuesday. Between
- 5:17Speaker 4: all the useful tips on Shees on the money and
- 5:19Speaker 4: property Playbrook help from our friends and family, it feels
- 5:22Speaker 4: unreal that we can tick off such a huge milestone.
- 5:25Speaker 2: That's the congratulations.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yay.
- 5:29Speaker 4: I'm so happy for you, Maya. Next, they have a
- 5:31Speaker 4: win from Jessica fabulous name, great name, who said money
- 5:34Speaker 4: win getting a merchant reversal in my favor. For an
- 5:38Speaker 4: online retailer thinking they can operate outside of consumer protection laws,
- 5:42Speaker 4: always check the window that your bank offers this service for.
- 5:45Speaker 4: I scraped in with two days to go before this
- 5:48Speaker 4: avenue would have been closed.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I didn't even know that was the thing. That's how cool.
- 5:52Speaker 4: I'm like noted for next time. If you feel like
- 5:55Speaker 4: you're getting scammed or someone's charging you the wrong thing,
- 5:57Speaker 4: or they send you something faulty maybe and they won't
- 6:00Speaker 4: give you the money back. Yes, smart, do you bank
- 6:02Speaker 4: about it?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Great? Great idea? Love love love. What else have you got?
- 6:06Speaker 4: I've got two Lululemon money wins, one from Julie.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Whose Lululemon anything to do with the money win? Let
- 6:13Speaker 2: me try, I'm ready.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Julie said, I got the most gorgeous Lulu lemontop at
- 6:17Speaker 4: the op shop for five bucks.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Oh, that is the money win.
- 6:19Speaker 4: And then a little further down, Maddie said, I bought
- 6:21Speaker 4: Lula Lemon Heights in excellent condition from a rent to
- 6:23Speaker 4: rack place for eighteen dollars.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Oh, okay, I take my words back. Those are Lulu
- 6:28Speaker 2: Lemon money wins. Victoria, I don't want to but I'm
- 6:33Speaker 2: gonna next.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I've got a money in from Aaron who said I
- 6:37Speaker 4: got an incredible stash of goodies from my local health
- 6:40Speaker 4: food store, which I go to you often. Today I
- 6:42Speaker 4: got all of these for thirty nine dollars, saving one
- 6:44Speaker 4: hundred and five. There's a nice little photo of her
- 6:47Speaker 4: hole a lot of stuff, So thirty nine when I consider.
- 6:51Speaker 4: I did a whip around to the grocery store on Saturday. Well,
- 6:55Speaker 4: my friend went into came up to pick a book
- 6:57Speaker 4: for anyone's reading the summer. I turned pretty we're all
- 6:59Speaker 4: over it, but she wanted to pick up a book,
- 7:01Speaker 4: and I was like, oh, just run into the grocery
- 7:02Speaker 4: store because I have eleven items on my grocery list,
- 7:05Speaker 4: and I reckon I can whip around and get that
- 7:06Speaker 4: done in the same time it takes you to get
- 7:08Speaker 4: a book. Sorry, this is a very roundabout way. I'm
- 7:10Speaker 4: telling you.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I like it. How long did it actually take, though,
- 7:13Speaker 2: real question.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Honestly, I got it done in like ten minutes, Like
- 7:16Speaker 4: I was power amazing. If you saw some crazy woman
- 7:18Speaker 4: with a trolley zooming through the ill.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It would be less than one minute per item.
- 7:24Speaker 4: That's very bad efficient, isn't that very efficient, but eleven items.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I was like, oh, it'll be a cheap shop, it'll
- 7:30Speaker 4: be so oh my god. It was one hundred and
- 7:34Speaker 4: twenty dollars.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Surely not.
- 7:36Speaker 4: And it wasn't like I was like disgusting. It was
- 7:38Speaker 4: like pantry staples. It was like swiy sauce. No, it
- 7:42Speaker 4: wasn't as I bought one for twenty four pack.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Of Pepsi Max.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Obviously, yeah, but that's not expensive and it was on
- 7:49Speaker 4: sale forty percent off because that's your money win that
- 7:51Speaker 4: I buy it. I couldn't believe it so well done,
- 7:53Speaker 4: that whole food win. I feel like that is an
- 7:56Speaker 4: absolute bargain eran. And the last one that I have
- 7:59Speaker 4: comes from Megan, who said money When I signed up
- 8:01Speaker 4: to mad Pause as a pet sitter and I have
- 8:03Speaker 4: my first doggy daycare client.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Tomorrow, that's actually so cute.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Extra cash to add to savings and a new friend
- 8:09Speaker 4: to keep me company while I'm working. And I know
- 8:11Speaker 4: we've mentioned Mad Paws on the pod before. We've never
- 8:13Speaker 4: worked with them, but you mentioned.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Use them before. Yeah, I've used them to before to
- 8:17Speaker 2: find like pet sitters and stuff, and I've had a
- 8:19Speaker 2: good experience. You go that's goody not bad.
- 8:22Speaker 4: That's bad.
- 8:23Speaker 2: You know they did doggie daycare though.
- 8:25Speaker 4: That's real cute, very fun, which and it makes sense
- 8:27Speaker 4: if you have a dog who has like anxiety issues
- 8:29Speaker 4: or something I do. Yeah, and you're someone who works
- 8:31Speaker 4: at home and you have an empty house, the win
- 8:33Speaker 4: win situation a friend all day.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That's very sweet and cute. Loss of all right, let's
- 8:39Speaker 2: segue straight into Beck. What broke tips have you round
- 8:42Speaker 2: up for Ust this week? Okay? So I've got a
- 8:44Speaker 2: couple of good ones. Oh are you sure you have
- 8:48Speaker 2: no faith in me? Oh?
- 8:49Speaker 1: I do?
- 8:50Speaker 2: I'm excited. What are they? Thank you? Okay, So the
- 8:52Speaker 2: first one comes from Sarah. So Sarah sent through a
- 8:55Speaker 2: lot of really good broke tips, and I'm going to
- 8:58Speaker 2: read out my favorites. Okay, all right ready, I'm going
- 9:00Speaker 2: to read them not in Sarah's voice, but the way
- 9:03Speaker 2: Sarah wrote this. So, first one sign up to all
- 9:05Speaker 2: takeaway places with your birthday, which is something I mentioned
- 9:08Speaker 2: start a week so you get free meals at birthday time.
- 9:11Speaker 2: The second one post on socials asking if anyone has
- 9:14Speaker 2: free meal kitboxes. So you know, hello fresh Marley Spoons.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I sent you one last week. You haven't redeemed it
- 9:19Speaker 2: yet because I just checked. Can you see that you
- 9:22Speaker 2: can cheat? I can to know that I cannot lie
- 9:24Speaker 2: about that. Yeah, I shouldn't have told her spoons delicious. No,
- 9:31Speaker 2: but this is actually very, very really great because I
- 9:35Speaker 2: don't know what to do with mine, Like I'm like,
- 9:36Speaker 2: should I give them friends? I never know if I
- 9:38Speaker 2: buy a box, but there's so many that are there
- 9:40Speaker 2: to go around, so great idea. Ask for those, and
- 9:43Speaker 2: then you can eat like a coin, she says, which
- 9:46Speaker 2: is great for a week, for two weeks, for three weeks, however,
- 9:48Speaker 2: money week you get. The next one is do groceries
- 9:52Speaker 2: late at night. I used to do this with my mum,
- 9:54Speaker 2: so you can get all the discounted stuffing like cream
- 9:57Speaker 2: and caramel, sponge, cake, woolies. All the free items get
- 10:01Speaker 2: marked down at a certain times. Roast chicken. I love
- 10:04Speaker 2: a whole roots for chicken. This one, I don't know
- 10:07Speaker 2: if I don't know if she's mentioning mad pause here,
- 10:09Speaker 2: but she says, if you live in a sharehouse or
- 10:10Speaker 2: with parents, sign up for pets sitting slash house sitting.
- 10:13Speaker 2: You get a mini holiday, possibly somewhere nicer than where
- 10:16Speaker 2: you live. Snuggles with a fur baby and you get
- 10:18Speaker 2: paid for it as well, the same as Mad Pause.
- 10:20Speaker 2: You can do that on Mad Pause. Amazing. Yeah, I
- 10:23Speaker 2: really liked it because when I had I have two
- 10:26Speaker 2: cats and a dog, and Steve and I were going
- 10:28Speaker 2: on a holiday and usually they go and spend time
- 10:31Speaker 2: with my parents, but my parents were going on the
- 10:33Speaker 2: same holiday, and I was like, well, what's going to
- 10:35Speaker 2: happen here? We found someone really nice on Mad Pause
- 10:38Speaker 2: and she came with like a police check and a
- 10:40Speaker 2: whole heap of really good references. And she actually came
- 10:42Speaker 2: and just lived in our house for a week and
- 10:44Speaker 2: they looked after our pets. And I was really stoked
- 10:47Speaker 2: with it because I'm I'm quite pedantic when it comes
- 10:50Speaker 2: to my pets and them being looked after, and I
- 10:52Speaker 2: didn't like the idea that someone would just like drop
- 10:54Speaker 2: in and feed them and run away and they're needed
- 10:58Speaker 2: just like their mother. Fair enough. So that is what
- 11:03Speaker 2: I have from the community this week. I was just
- 11:05Speaker 2: I'm just going to use the one person because she
- 11:07Speaker 2: did give me many beautiful, very great.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Absolutely, and these were all very very useful. I think
- 11:15Speaker 2: I love the idea of signing up if I had
- 11:18Speaker 2: done that when I was younger, I would have had
- 11:20Speaker 2: a much better UNI experience. Usually the house is quiet too,
- 11:23Speaker 2: because like you don't get a pet sitter if you
- 11:26Speaker 2: have housemates, so like you get a whole house to yourself. Hot,
- 11:30Speaker 2: you could study, you could work from home, like, oh
- 11:33Speaker 2: what a dream. Whatever you want to do now. My
- 11:36Speaker 2: personal breake tip for this week is is it garlic bread?
- 11:40Speaker 2: It's not garlic bread this week, and it doesn't include bread.
- 11:43Speaker 2: But it doesn't. That's quite disappointed. And I carry often
- 11:47Speaker 2: mentioned our favorite bread. So what I'm saying is if
- 11:52Speaker 2: you're a single person, that's probably more ideal. If you're
- 11:54Speaker 2: a single person and you're buying for yourself, take advantage
- 11:58Speaker 2: of those ready to eat meals. Either in the frozen section,
- 12:01Speaker 2: you can get like a four dollar lasagna. This is
- 12:04Speaker 2: what I did when I was really really like I
- 12:06Speaker 2: had no money for the week. I would get like
- 12:08Speaker 2: a really cheap you can get to Audi. You can go.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Audi has good frozen meals, have really good frozen meals
- 12:13Speaker 2: and very very cheap. And if you want to create
- 12:16Speaker 2: the exact same meal from scratch, it's gonna cost you
- 12:19Speaker 2: so much money. So don't feel bad if you have
- 12:22Speaker 2: expensive to make totally flying mince. If you put mince
- 12:26Speaker 2: in you lasagna, bam, ten dollars already totally And I
- 12:29Speaker 2: don't know about you guys, but those meals don't usually
- 12:32Speaker 2: fill me to the brim and I want to be
- 12:34Speaker 2: filled to the brim. So if you need to have
- 12:36Speaker 2: a second one, go for it's still going to only
- 12:39Speaker 2: eight bucks for two serves of lazadi, like eight bucks
- 12:42Speaker 2: or two serves of lasagna. But also frozen veggies, real
- 12:45Speaker 2: cheap frozen veggie cup. Your your pre made meal with
- 12:48Speaker 2: that frozen veggies, or like some sides or something to
- 12:51Speaker 2: make it a little bit more cost effective but also
- 12:53Speaker 2: feeling totally. So yes, that is my break tap for
- 12:56Speaker 2: the week. Do not sneeze it. Ready to eat meals
- 12:58Speaker 2: go to the frozen section if they're too expensive in
- 13:01Speaker 2: the refrigerated section. I feel like they are more expensive
- 13:03Speaker 2: in the fridge they're like eleven dollars maybe, yeah, but
- 13:07Speaker 2: frozen section super cheap. They're often on special as well.
- 13:10Speaker 2: You know there's like bowls is super Bowls. Oh yeah,
- 13:12Speaker 2: I like those ones. They're like wholesome bowls Bowls or
- 13:16Speaker 2: something like that. They're always on special. Those are also
- 13:18Speaker 2: like four or five dollars. Yeah, so do it. That's
- 13:21Speaker 2: actually quite smart. I haven't looked at that part of
- 13:22Speaker 2: the supermarket in a long time. Love, you've got to
- 13:25Speaker 2: check it out. I'm gonna check it out. I love it.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Thank you for that. All right, let's go to a
- 13:28Speaker 2: quick break and on the flip side, we're gonna be
- 13:31Speaker 2: talking about how to manage your finances if you're a freelancer,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and we're going to be talking about something you split
- 13:36Speaker 2: into our DMS about and that's affording a pet. So guys,
- 13:40Speaker 2: do not go anywhere.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 13:48Speaker 4: money dilemma.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just
- 13:53Speaker 2: can't solve? The Sheese on the Money team is here
- 13:56Speaker 2: to help. Every week, we tackle your dilemmas, both big
- 13:59Speaker 2: and small. Answer your most burning money, career and life questions.
- 14:03Speaker 2: To get involved, simply head to our website and leave
- 14:05Speaker 2: us a short voice recording and you might just find
- 14:07Speaker 2: yourself on the show. Now, let's take a listen to
- 14:10Speaker 2: this week's money dilemma. I have Victoria.
- 14:15Speaker 5: I have a quick money question. I feel like you
- 14:17Speaker 5: always speak about, you know, people that have jobs, full
- 14:21Speaker 5: time jobs, getting a job, leaving a job, asking for
- 14:24Speaker 5: a pay rise. But for myself and for pretty much
- 14:27Speaker 5: all of my friends, we're all freelancers in the creative industries,
- 14:31Speaker 5: and I feel like a lot of people right now
- 14:35Speaker 5: maybe would go unmentioned, but would really appreciate some help
- 14:38Speaker 5: in managing their finances when freelance and how to set
- 14:43Speaker 5: themselves up for success when your pay is coming in
- 14:46Speaker 5: at different times even though you might be really busy.
- 14:49Speaker 5: But yeah, just backing yourself, I guess we'd love some
- 14:52Speaker 5: tips on how to live.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I feel like this is a good one. Actually. I
- 14:57Speaker 2: feel like maybe you haven't listened to enough of our
- 15:00Speaker 2: podcasts though, because we've done a few episodes on variable
- 15:03Speaker 2: income and like if you have a side hustle and
- 15:06Speaker 2: how to manage like tax and income and all of that.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So first things first, the twenty ninth of January, we
- 15:12Speaker 2: did an episode on side hustles and how to manage
- 15:14Speaker 2: income for that, and then then on the twelfth of
- 15:16Speaker 2: May twenty twenty one, we did an episode what was
- 15:19Speaker 2: called jess like budgeting for variable There you go. So
- 15:21Speaker 2: we've done a couple before, but I think it's really
- 15:24Speaker 2: important to remember that even if your income is variable,
- 15:29Speaker 2: your job is to make it as stable as possible. Right,
- 15:33Speaker 2: And I've spoken about this concept before of you know,
- 15:36Speaker 2: if you're brand new to freelancing, it can feel really
- 15:38Speaker 2: up and down because you've never done it before. But
- 15:40Speaker 2: if that's your chosen I guess career path, have a
- 15:43Speaker 2: look at the last three or six or even twelve
- 15:46Speaker 2: months and work out what your average is, and if
- 15:49Speaker 2: you feel like the average is relatively close to what
- 15:52Speaker 2: you're earning, like some months it might be just under,
- 15:54Speaker 2: in some months it might be over, let's budget on
- 15:56Speaker 2: that average amount. If that average amount you see you
- 16:00Speaker 2: feel is a little bit too much, have a look
- 16:02Speaker 2: at what your lowest earning months are and take those
- 16:05Speaker 2: months and let's budget based on your lowest earning months,
- 16:09Speaker 2: because that means anything above and beyond is going to
- 16:11Speaker 2: be cream on top, and that's going to make you
- 16:14Speaker 2: feel a lot more financially stable. So when it comes
- 16:17Speaker 2: to freelancing, I think there's you know, lots of different
- 16:20Speaker 2: areas where you could freelance, right Like obviously creatives do
- 16:24Speaker 2: it a lot. You could be in literal medicine, you
- 16:26Speaker 2: could be in so many different areas. But the important
- 16:29Speaker 2: thing is to understand two different numbers. One what is
- 16:33Speaker 2: your average income to what are your expenses? So a
- 16:38Speaker 2: lot of people they bury their heads in the sand
- 16:40Speaker 2: about expenses, But what you need to understand is what
- 16:44Speaker 2: are your personal expenses? So what is your rent, what
- 16:46Speaker 2: is your food? What is all of that when it
- 16:48Speaker 2: comes to your personal life. But what are your business expenses?
- 16:51Speaker 2: Like do you have accounting software that you pay for
- 16:53Speaker 2: every month? Do you have you know, different freelance costs
- 16:57Speaker 2: that come into it, Because those two numbers should always
- 16:59Speaker 2: be treated differently, like your business costs should not be
- 17:03Speaker 2: confused with your personal costs because you need to be
- 17:06Speaker 2: making sure that your business is covering those and you're
- 17:09Speaker 2: all good. But the important thing is to try and
- 17:11Speaker 2: find as much I guess stability as possible. And that's
- 17:15Speaker 2: why I always rely on budgeting with the lowest amount.
- 17:18Speaker 2: And you might go but the some months and like,
- 17:21Speaker 2: let's just be really stereotypical about this. In picksel numbers
- 17:25Speaker 2: V some months I make two thousand dollars, some months
- 17:28Speaker 2: I make ten thousand dollars. Great, what you're going to
- 17:31Speaker 2: do is take those months where you don't actually earn
- 17:36Speaker 2: two thousand dollars where you're earning ten thousand dollars. What
- 17:38Speaker 2: are you doing with that eight grand? Can we look
- 17:40Speaker 2: at your money spending habits, because if you're anything like
- 17:43Speaker 2: old me, you're blowing that eight grand that month you're like,
- 17:46Speaker 2: oh my gosh, it's been so long since I've had money.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I'm going to treat myself to ABCDNA, and then by
- 17:53Speaker 2: the end of that month you have nothing left over
- 17:55Speaker 2: for it. What I would do is go all right,
- 17:58Speaker 2: that money needs to go into an other account, and
- 18:02Speaker 2: that's where your average comes from. So Jess, say you've
- 18:05Speaker 2: worked out your average is three and a half or
- 18:07Speaker 2: four thousand dollars a month, but one month you get
- 18:09Speaker 2: paid two thousand dollars. What we're going to do to
- 18:12Speaker 2: have some consistency is take two thousand dollars out of
- 18:15Speaker 2: that fund that you've put away, the rainy day kind
- 18:18Speaker 2: of every day adjustment fund, and give it to yourself
- 18:22Speaker 2: that month, so you're always living on the average. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 2: because over time, if we're just living on the average
- 18:29Speaker 2: and we have higher months, we are going to start
- 18:32Speaker 2: to actually put money aside. That fund will build up,
- 18:35Speaker 2: that will become your emergency fund. That makes you feel
- 18:38Speaker 2: a lot more confident. But I think it's really important
- 18:41Speaker 2: to realize that even if you are a freelancer, a
- 18:43Speaker 2: lot of these budget tips and tricks do still apply
- 18:46Speaker 2: to you. But what you need to do is look
- 18:49Speaker 2: for the consistency on top of those tips and tricks.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Does that make sense Yeah, one hundred percent, very well,
- 18:54Speaker 2: said V I think it's important to also understand another
- 18:58Speaker 2: freelancer rant, when was the last time you checked your pricing?
- 19:03Speaker 2: When was the last time that you looked at how
- 19:06Speaker 2: much you're charging clients?
- 19:07Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 19:08Speaker 2: Because I can almost guarantee that most freelancers haven't looked
- 19:11Speaker 2: in it in more than twelve months. And inflation, my friends,
- 19:14Speaker 2: was seven percent. So are you going to be increasing
- 19:17Speaker 2: your rates? Because I can almost guarantee that your business
- 19:21Speaker 2: expenses have gone up in that period of time as well.
- 19:24Speaker 2: So we need to actually be putting future us first
- 19:27Speaker 2: by looking at pricing. And one of the most important
- 19:29Speaker 2: things as a small business owner or as a freelancer
- 19:33Speaker 2: is to have an understanding of your worth. And if
- 19:36Speaker 2: you're not doing that, you're shooting yourself in the foot
- 19:38Speaker 2: and you're always going to feel like you're chasing your
- 19:40Speaker 2: tail like you do good work. Your clients see value
- 19:43Speaker 2: in that, please put a financial number on that. So
- 19:47Speaker 2: I think that's that's where I'm at. Do you guys
- 19:49Speaker 2: have anything that you would like to add to the
- 19:51Speaker 2: freelance combo?
- 19:52Speaker 4: I think on the money thing, going off what you
- 19:53Speaker 4: were saying, obviously, she said that if you're self employed,
- 19:57Speaker 4: like you can't ask for a pay rise the way
- 19:58Speaker 4: that someone who is an employee can. As well as
- 20:01Speaker 4: putting up your raise, you can pitch more work. I
- 20:03Speaker 4: feel like a lot of people when they've been freelancing
- 20:05Speaker 4: for a while get a bit comfy and wait for
- 20:07Speaker 4: work to come to us. But are you approaching people
- 20:10Speaker 4: in your kneese? Are you putting flyers in local businesses?
- 20:13Speaker 4: Are you advertising on the internet? Do you have a
- 20:15Speaker 4: social media that's acting as a funnel. There are lots
- 20:17Speaker 4: of things that you can do to generate additional business
- 20:20Speaker 4: as well, and that's another way to kind of pump
- 20:22Speaker 4: up that income and you know, effectively raise the amount
- 20:26Speaker 4: of money that you're able to pay yourself. Once you
- 20:28Speaker 4: raise how much cash flow.
- 20:29Speaker 2: You've got coming in. Yeah, I agree. I think it's
- 20:31Speaker 2: really just about just being across your numbers, and that's
- 20:34Speaker 2: harder done than it is said. Unfortunately, I think saying, oh,
- 20:38Speaker 2: I'm across my numbers because you knew what came in
- 20:40Speaker 2: last month? What's your average? Yeah, what's the mean? What's
- 20:44Speaker 2: you love them? I think it's really important to understand
- 20:48Speaker 2: that though, like what is going to be the most
- 20:51Speaker 2: reasonable number for you to base your budget on, because
- 20:54Speaker 2: if you start making financial decisions because you had one
- 20:57Speaker 2: ten thousand dollars a month, that's actually going to shoot
- 20:59Speaker 2: you in the You can't live a ten thousand dollars
- 21:02Speaker 2: a month lifestyle. If that was just a one time
- 21:05Speaker 2: or a two time thing, or maybe you've gotten comfy
- 21:08Speaker 2: with it because it happened three months in a row,
- 21:10Speaker 2: but what you forgot was that it was actually coming
- 21:12Speaker 2: up to Christmas time and then you're going to have
- 21:14Speaker 2: a lull come you know, the rest of the year.
- 21:17Speaker 2: So I think it's really important to look at your
- 21:19Speaker 2: numbers deeply and understand, well, when is my peak season?
- 21:23Speaker 2: Because everyone's going to have a peak season, even you, Jess,
- 21:25Speaker 2: you do freelance content, there is going to be peak seasons.
- 21:29Speaker 2: And like I already know for she's on the money,
- 21:31Speaker 2: what those seasons look like because of the types of
- 21:33Speaker 2: content that we create. We know that June is massive
- 21:36Speaker 2: for us because we're a finance podcast and there are
- 21:39Speaker 2: lots of financial things to talk about at end of
- 21:41Speaker 2: financial year. Christmas, end of year is big for us.
- 21:45Speaker 2: But that might not be true for every industry. So
- 21:48Speaker 2: you need to look at yours and go, well, when
- 21:50Speaker 2: am I going to be making the most or when
- 21:52Speaker 2: am I going to be, you know, making the least?
- 21:54Speaker 2: And I need to actually have a little bit of
- 21:56Speaker 2: buffer set aside to make sure that I can still
- 21:58Speaker 2: pay my bills.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Would you like to move on to our spicy DM
- 22:02Speaker 2: of the week? Guys, Yes, you can't wait.
- 22:05Speaker 4: It's the highlight of my week every week, all right.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So we've got a community dilemma to discuss this week,
- 22:10Speaker 2: guys and the DM. It sounded a lot like this, Hi, girls,
- 22:14Speaker 2: just sending this off the back of Ved's article about
- 22:17Speaker 2: reversing your financial commitments. A friend of mine got a
- 22:21Speaker 2: dog in lockdown and now she can't afford to feed her.
- 22:25Speaker 2: She's always talking about putting it up for adoption because
- 22:28Speaker 2: she's just so stressed financially. The dogg oh has built
- 22:31Speaker 2: up quite a few vet bills recently as well, and
- 22:34Speaker 2: I know she's just really freaking out. I feel so
- 22:36Speaker 2: bad for the dog. I also feel bad for my
- 22:38Speaker 2: girlfriend because it breaks her. But is this the right
- 22:41Speaker 2: thing to do? I also feel like I should add
- 22:44Speaker 2: my friend a lot like us was in a much
- 22:46Speaker 2: better position financially a few years ago.
- 22:49Speaker 4: This one hurts my heart. Such a hard position to
- 22:53Speaker 4: be in.
- 22:54Speaker 2: I feel like it's a good conversation to have, though.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Beck and I recently recorded our Deep Dieve Frour our
- 22:59Speaker 2: financial commitment episode and whether you can back out of
- 23:02Speaker 2: financial commitments and Beck, what's the summary of that. I
- 23:05Speaker 2: mean you can, but we were definitely talking about things
- 23:08Speaker 2: that were not pets. Not pets, not living feeling creatures. Yeah,
- 23:13Speaker 2: but you can back out of any financial commitment. Yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 2: I think it's important to put future first. Yes, I'm
- 23:19Speaker 2: the type of person that's going to really struggle with
- 23:21Speaker 2: this question because there have been times that I have
- 23:24Speaker 2: been incredibly financially stressed and I would feed my cat
- 23:28Speaker 2: before I fed myself. So I feel like pets are
- 23:32Speaker 2: different for everybody, So I probably need to preface my opinions,
- 23:37Speaker 2: probably coming from a place where I have grown up
- 23:39Speaker 2: being obsessed with pets. I have three of them that
- 23:42Speaker 2: are my life. Like, I don't know what's going to
- 23:44Speaker 2: happen when I have a human child, Like, how do
- 23:46Speaker 2: you love a human child more than you love your cat? Jessica,
- 23:49Speaker 2: I actually don't know. I don't know, like it's going
- 23:54Speaker 2: to be important. Have you seen my dog? Holy moly,
- 23:57Speaker 2: a kid can't beat that. Yeah, So I find it
- 24:01Speaker 2: really hard to be having that conversation in saying that,
- 24:05Speaker 2: putting my pragmatic hat on. If that is a financial constraint,
- 24:08Speaker 2: I think obviously the best answer is to rehome that dog. Yeah,
- 24:12Speaker 2: it's true. Hopefully there's someone that is close enough to
- 24:17Speaker 2: someone that you can see often that will be willing
- 24:20Speaker 2: to take this dog on, or is anything you can
- 24:23Speaker 2: shift around, maybe make some you know, money? A PI
- 24:28Speaker 2: is hard to say because it's probably not possible. But
- 24:31Speaker 2: is this your last resort? Is your last resort getting
- 24:34Speaker 2: giving the dog up? You know what I mean? And
- 24:36Speaker 2: if it is, I don't know. I don't really own pets,
- 24:40Speaker 2: but I do know that I just feel really terrible
- 24:43Speaker 2: for the animals who have formed an attachment. But everyone's
- 24:47Speaker 2: going to be okay. Everyone adapts. Every animal adapts, everything's
- 24:50Speaker 2: going to be okay. So if it's the last resort,
- 24:53Speaker 2: of course, give the dog up. But maybe try someone
- 24:56Speaker 2: that you know, someone that you are friends with, family
- 24:59Speaker 2: with you can see the dog sometimes, you know, something
- 25:02Speaker 2: like that's when close if not, I think we need
- 25:06Speaker 2: is this a season of life or is this what
- 25:08Speaker 2: life's going to look like full time moving forward? Like
- 25:11Speaker 2: is there a way that you could get some support
- 25:12Speaker 2: in the interim because you're really struggling financially. There are
- 25:16Speaker 2: lots of resources totally, Like, there are heaps of resources,
- 25:19Speaker 2: and I don't think it just comes down to the dog,
- 25:22Speaker 2: right and like we could find a way to feed
- 25:24Speaker 2: the dog very cheaply if we needed to for a
- 25:26Speaker 2: short period of time, but you know as wells pets. Yeah,
- 25:31Speaker 2: Like there's just a lot in that conversation, I think.
- 25:35Speaker 2: But Jess, have you ever made a financial commitment that
- 25:37Speaker 2: you struggled to I guess keep you probably haven't because
- 25:41Speaker 2: she's muchmuder than aspect.
- 25:44Speaker 4: I don't think so, not in this way, And I
- 25:46Speaker 4: think that's why this question we're all finding it quite hard. Yes,
- 25:49Speaker 4: I'm the same as u V. I think I think
- 25:51Speaker 4: about a pet and I view it as a child,
- 25:53Speaker 4: like it is dependent on you. Yeah, And I think
- 25:55Speaker 4: there's a broader conversation to have, and it's a good
- 25:57Speaker 4: chance for a reminder, I guess that. And you take
- 26:00Speaker 4: on a pet, you're taking on a commitment, hopefully for
- 26:03Speaker 4: over a decade depending on the pet.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a lifetime because that's their lifetime commitment. Like,
- 26:07Speaker 2: you don't take on a pet with the idea that, oh, well,
- 26:10Speaker 2: i'll just get rid of it h if it's too hard.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Yeah, we're not getting bunnies for Easter because they're cute.
- 26:14Speaker 4: We're not getting puppies and then getting rid of them
- 26:15Speaker 4: because they get big lately.
- 26:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 26:17Speaker 4: I think just a good reminder for people that pets
- 26:20Speaker 4: require love and sometimes things come up like with this
- 26:22Speaker 4: girl's poor dog, where they require surgery. And I know
- 26:25Speaker 4: that those are things that you can't plan for, but
- 26:28Speaker 4: it's something that you, I guess you have to factor
- 26:30Speaker 4: in at the start. And I know that if someone
- 26:32Speaker 4: said to me, hey, like it's going to cost six
- 26:35Speaker 4: thousand dollars, your choices are pay that money or put
- 26:38Speaker 4: your pet down. I know that that is absolutely not
- 26:40Speaker 4: That is a decision that I would really, really really
- 26:43Speaker 4: struggle with right, And so I can see how she
- 26:45Speaker 4: got into this position where she's she's obviously paid for
- 26:47Speaker 4: these surgeries and maybe that's put a significant amount of
- 26:50Speaker 4: financial strain from her, And that's come from a place
- 26:52Speaker 4: of love, and that's come from a place of I'm
- 26:54Speaker 4: trying and I'm doing my best. So I'm not in
- 26:56Speaker 4: any way implying that she's being no neglectful, of course not.
- 27:00Speaker 2: And because we don't know the circumstances at all, it's
- 27:02Speaker 2: just a really hard conversation to have. And I think
- 27:04Speaker 2: it's our responsibility to drive home the fact that a
- 27:08Speaker 2: pet is a responsibility. And I think that, Yeah, it's
- 27:12Speaker 2: interesting because I've you've probably had it before to just
- 27:15Speaker 2: where people reply to your Instagram stories they're like, oh
- 27:18Speaker 2: my gosh, seeing your cat makes me want to get one. Yeah,
- 27:21Speaker 2: and I go, don't just get one because mine looks cute. Yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 2: like minor responsibility, like.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Bailey, My couches they pee on shit. Like there's the
- 27:28Speaker 4: bad stuff too, Yeah, yeah, like my cat Bailey.
- 27:31Speaker 2: I have had what now, eleven and a half years,
- 27:34Speaker 2: and he is my best friend and he is now
- 27:37Speaker 2: what twelve and a half ish. He's getting to be
- 27:40Speaker 2: old boy.
- 27:41Speaker 4: He's such a sweetheart.
- 27:42Speaker 2: But like, there have been times where financially it's been
- 27:45Speaker 2: really hard, but I kind of feel like I committed
- 27:49Speaker 2: to that cat and making sure that he had his
- 27:52Speaker 2: best life. Like it has constrained me in so many
- 27:55Speaker 2: different ways, from not being able to apply for certain
- 27:57Speaker 2: rentals to not being able to travel if I couldn't
- 27:59Speaker 2: find a pet sitter for him, to like lots of
- 28:02Speaker 2: different things that I know other people who have gotten
- 28:05Speaker 2: rid of pets for those reasons, and I just go
- 28:08Speaker 2: if that's the case, Like if you want to get
- 28:09Speaker 2: a pet, and then all of a sudden you want
- 28:11Speaker 2: to go on a holiday, but you can't find, you know,
- 28:12Speaker 2: pet sitter, so you get rid of the dog. You
- 28:14Speaker 2: shouldn't have had that dog in the first place. I
- 28:16Speaker 2: think I'm quite cut and dry when it comes to
- 28:20Speaker 2: pet justice. I see a lot of tiktoks.
- 28:23Speaker 4: I'm on pet TikTok at the moment, I'm on animal
- 28:25Speaker 4: shelter TikTok because I think because I was looking, I
- 28:27Speaker 4: was trying to figure out how lay if I don't
- 28:29Speaker 4: know's how you can volunteer with local shelters on like
- 28:31Speaker 4: social media or something like that because I really need
- 28:33Speaker 4: to do that. But anyway, that's the personal gain. I'm
- 28:35Speaker 4: on that side of TikTok. And there's this trend that
- 28:37Speaker 4: shelters are doing. They're putting up like videos of the
- 28:40Speaker 4: animals and why they were donated.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I mean, break my heart.
- 28:45Speaker 4: It's honestly gut frenching because I watched one literally last night,
- 28:49Speaker 4: and like, some of them makes sense, you know, the
- 28:51Speaker 4: owner passed away, or the owner moved into state. There
- 28:55Speaker 4: was one like the owner went to jail. Oh no,
- 28:58Speaker 4: and you just go, that's really hard. But there are
- 29:00Speaker 4: some that it was like dog was too noisy, oh
- 29:03Speaker 4: you know, or cat you know, tore up couch and
- 29:06Speaker 4: things like that, and you go, oh, these are the
- 29:08Speaker 4: people that probably shouldn't think about what they were getting into.
- 29:11Speaker 4: On the note of shelters, I will say as well,
- 29:14Speaker 4: if it's just the food thing for our listener or
- 29:17Speaker 4: a friend of our listener, a lot of local shelters
- 29:20Speaker 4: will actually pass food along to people in need, So
- 29:23Speaker 4: if they don't want you to give up the pet, no,
- 29:25Speaker 4: So I would say, if it's just the food thing,
- 29:27Speaker 4: and as you said, if you think it's just right now,
- 29:29Speaker 4: while times are tough, and you know, people are struggling
- 29:32Speaker 4: to put food on the table for themselves, let alone
- 29:33Speaker 4: for a pet, which I totally understand. It could be
- 29:36Speaker 4: worth just reaching out to a couple of your local
- 29:37Speaker 4: shelters because a lot of people donate foods to those
- 29:40Speaker 4: shelters and where they can, I know that they will
- 29:42Speaker 4: pass that along to help out a pet and a
- 29:44Speaker 4: family in need. So that's something that you could look
- 29:46Speaker 4: into as well. But yeah, I think ultimately we don't
- 29:50Speaker 4: want the pet sitting there having a diminished quality of
- 29:54Speaker 4: life and consequently you also feeling really terrible and really
- 29:58Speaker 4: stressed as well. If it is the absolute last resort,
- 30:01Speaker 4: I think, as you said back, like the right thing
- 30:03Speaker 4: to do is to rehome it, hopefully close to home.
- 30:06Speaker 4: But I think we all get how awful and how
- 30:09Speaker 4: hard that totally I agree.
- 30:11Speaker 2: We asked our community obviously what their thoughts were. Someone said,
- 30:15Speaker 2: I'm a VET nurse and we're seeing this a lot
- 30:17Speaker 2: post COVID lately. You have to do what's best for
- 30:20Speaker 2: both of you.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I get that.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Very nice. Someone said, I got in a lot of
- 30:24Speaker 2: debt at a young age and I ended up in
- 30:26Speaker 2: a part nine debt agreement, but I still have my cat.
- 30:31Speaker 2: That's cute.
- 30:31Speaker 4: Well, it makes you think about too, like companionship. Like
- 30:33Speaker 4: you see a lot of homeless people who will keep
- 30:35Speaker 4: their pet, and I know that there's a lot of
- 30:37Speaker 4: mental health. There's a lot of discourse around whether it's
- 30:40Speaker 4: good or bad. But yeah, I completely agree, Like they'll,
- 30:42Speaker 4: like you said, sometimes they'll feed the pet before they'll
- 30:44Speaker 4: feed themselves.
- 30:45Speaker 2: It's that bond, right, that love and that connection totally.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Someone said, I got a dog during COVID. She came
- 30:52Speaker 2: with a lot of health issues. We just had to
- 30:54Speaker 2: tighten our budget to be able to afford her. Someone said,
- 30:57Speaker 2: I would do absolutely anything I could to keep my animal,
- 31:00Speaker 2: but if the choice has to be made, it has
- 31:02Speaker 2: to be made. I think that's really compassionate at the
- 31:05Speaker 2: end of the day. Like at the end of the day,
- 31:07Speaker 2: I think it's the last ditched plan, and I think
- 31:10Speaker 2: that there shouldn't be shame in that. But I also
- 31:13Speaker 2: think that we need to advocate for animals so much
- 31:16Speaker 2: more than we already do, Like they are such a
- 31:18Speaker 2: massive responsibility. And if you've got a dog during COVID,
- 31:22Speaker 2: because you're like, ah, well, we're home all the time,
- 31:24Speaker 2: we'll work it out later, like no, no, no, that
- 31:26Speaker 2: was a twelve to fourteen year commitment from you.
- 31:29Speaker 4: And they're sentient beings, like they get attached, they have emotions,
- 31:32Speaker 4: they have feelings like if you're on that side of
- 31:34Speaker 4: TikTok or if you're not, go on there, Like you.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Don't even need to be on that side of TikTok.
- 31:38Speaker 2: I have my God, I'm obsessed with my dog, and
- 31:41Speaker 2: it's like right back at me, like we're obsessed with
- 31:44Speaker 2: each other. We're in livee.
- 31:45Speaker 4: She does love you.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Yeah, they're the rules I told her with me. If
- 31:49Speaker 2: you want to eat all the good food, you gotta
- 31:51Speaker 2: love make us look good on the internet, Luci. But
- 31:55Speaker 2: I think it's just one of those things where obviously
- 31:58Speaker 2: rehoming a pet can sometimes be best thing, and at
- 32:01Speaker 2: the end of the day, if that's what you're thinking,
- 32:03Speaker 2: then maybe you're not giving the pet the love it
- 32:04Speaker 2: deserves to begin with that home. I don't know, but
- 32:07Speaker 2: I would really start with trying to find in a
- 32:10Speaker 2: new home before deciding to take it down to the pound. Yeah,
- 32:13Speaker 2: I agree completely, Yeah, absolutely, I mean message usin, will
- 32:17Speaker 2: put it on the stories and so yeah, because like
- 32:20Speaker 2: I just I would hate to think that someone in
- 32:22Speaker 2: our community had to give up a pet when there
- 32:24Speaker 2: are so many beautiful community members that probably want a
- 32:26Speaker 2: little furry friend. Totally, that's how I got Daisy, I know,
- 32:30Speaker 2: I know. We went nuts on the internet and tried
- 32:32Speaker 2: to find Jess a family member, and do you know what,
- 32:34Speaker 2: we were successful.
- 32:35Speaker 4: It was a cute community came through.
- 32:37Speaker 2: I love it. I love it. Got a bad way,
- 32:40Speaker 2: but I think that's it. I feel like a little
- 32:44Speaker 2: now I know it. Un Thus, you absolutely must and
- 32:48Speaker 2: that's okay. You were in a safe space. Yeah, I
- 32:51Speaker 2: know you totally are. Like, I don't think that there's
- 32:53Speaker 2: any judgment if it's the last ditched attempt, like I
- 32:55Speaker 2: think it's. It is what it is, isn't it all right?
- 32:58Speaker 2: Well with that, I hope you guys have the most
- 33:01Speaker 2: beautiful weekend and we'll see you right early on Monday
- 33:03Speaker 2: for our money diary. Bye guys.
- 33:05Speaker 4: Bye.
