- 0:04Are audio podcasts dead in 2026? I'm not panicking
- 0:09yet, but yet might be the key word in that sentence.
- 0:12Hey, it's Abbey. Welcome to another episode of
- 0:14Abbey the Podcast Lady. This week we are chatting
- 0:16about some big news in the podcasting industry,
- 0:19and that is the fact that Apple Podcasts has
- 0:22announced that they are branching out into video
- 0:25in 2026. Today we're going to talk about what
- 0:28that means for you, what that means for your
- 0:30show, what you should be doing when it comes
- 0:32to video elements for your podcast, and three
- 0:35reasons why you should add video and three -
- 0:37reasons why you shouldn't add video to your show.
- 0:41So let's just dive right into it. Here's a question
- 0:43I've been seeing across the internet this week.
- 0:46Is Apple podcasts just trying to turn into another
- 0:49version of YouTube? And I guess my answer to
- 0:52that is not. Really video podcasts are not a
- 0:55new thing when Apple announced that they were
- 0:57adding video to their platform I honestly kind
- 0:59of thought that they were a little behind the
- 1:01times on this Spotify has been doing this for
- 1:03a really long time They implemented video years
- 1:07ago onto their platform. So Apple was kind of
- 1:09a slow adopter to this new medium of video podcasting
- 1:15what I want you to look at this as is not a replacement
- 1:18for YouTube, but just a different way to consume
- 1:22video podcasts. Every single podcast listening
- 1:25platform, whether that's Apple, Spotify, iHeart,
- 1:28all those places, they want you to stay on their
- 1:31app as much as possible. By adding video podcasting
- 1:35to their service, that gets people to stay on
- 1:38their app, especially if it's a show that someone
- 1:40listens to where it does have video already being
- 1:43made and they had to leave to go watch it before.
- 1:45An example of this is Girls Next Level. I love
- 1:48listening to Girls Next Level and I know they
- 1:50have a video version of this But if I want to
- 1:52watch the video version, I have to leave Apple
- 1:54podcasts and I have to go watch that on YouTube.
- 1:57Now, I'm not really a video podcast consumer.
- 1:59I like listening on those apps like Apple and
- 2:02Spotify. So I wouldn't go to YouTube to watch
- 2:05the video, but now that video is being implemented,
- 2:07I'm much more likely to consume the video version
- 2:10of Girls Next Level because they do talk about
- 2:13a lot of things and they include visuals and
- 2:15pictures in their show. So this is just kind
- 2:19of another way to go deep. with the audience
- 2:22that is using that specific platform, and I don't
- 2:25see it as another YouTube, I see it as just going
- 2:28deeper. with the users. So when I got the email
- 2:31about Apple podcasts adding the video feature,
- 2:34my first gut instinct as a podcast producer of
- 2:37nine shows every week is, what does this mean
- 2:40for me? What does this mean for my workflow?
- 2:42Is this gonna be a bunch of extra work? Is it
- 2:44gonna be another hefty upload to another platform
- 2:47every single week for every single show? What
- 2:49does this look like? And that's... kind of been
- 2:52what I've seen across like threads and other
- 2:55places I hang out on the internet is what does
- 2:57this look like? How are we going to be streamlining
- 2:59this process to add the video because obviously
- 3:01they want it but what does it look like on a
- 3:04given basis for the average creator? Right now
- 3:06from what I've read online I haven't found like
- 3:09a real clear -cut answer of how this works with
- 3:11your workflow but based on what I have been reading
- 3:14here's what I've learned it's that the Apple
- 3:17ecosystem is being set up to support your video
- 3:19as we speak. So this is not rolling out to everyone
- 3:22right away, it's rolling out to select users
- 3:25of certain platforms that implement video already.
- 3:28So depending on who you host your podcast through,
- 3:32you might already have access to ad video, you
- 3:34might get that access later on, or you will have
- 3:37to switch hosts if this is your primary goal
- 3:40to have your video on Apple podcasts. I don't
- 3:42plan on switching my hosting from RSS .com anytime
- 3:46soon, and I don't plan on switching my clients
- 3:48out of rss .com anytime soon. I think that I'm
- 3:52probably gonna pump the brakes as much as I can
- 3:54on this and hold off as long as I can on this.
- 3:57One, because I'm an audio purist and two, because
- 4:00I want them to work out the kinks on other people's
- 4:03stuff before I start bringing me and my clients
- 4:06over to this video podcasting platform that Apple
- 4:10is turning into. So at the moment, I'm not planning
- 4:13on switching my workflow for anything. And depending
- 4:16on who you are hosting your podcast through,
- 4:19this might already be available to you. So definitely
- 4:21poke around on your RSS feed providers website
- 4:25and check and see if this is an option for you
- 4:28already. And if not, I would just wait until
- 4:30they send you an email saying, hey, this is available.
- 4:32You can do it now, because that's what I'm doing.
- 4:34I'm just waiting for an email from RSS saying,
- 4:36hey, you can now put your video here and we'll
- 4:38put it on Apple. So let's get into the title
- 4:41of this episode, what you came here for. Three
- 4:43reasons you should add video podcasting to your
- 4:46to -do list and three reasons that you shouldn't
- 4:49do it in 2026. We're going to start out with
- 4:51the three reasons that you should be adding video
- 4:54podcasting to your to -do list of content creation.
- 4:59Now this is coming from someone who has already
- 5:01said in this episode that I am an audio purist.
- 5:03At its core, podcasting is an audio file and
- 5:07I am a audio listener so when I consume podcasts
- 5:11I'm purely consuming the audio the video for
- 5:15me is consumed in the form of short form clips
- 5:17or reels or tik -toks that sort of thing I like
- 5:22the audio aspect of a podcast now I would not
- 5:25call myself the average bear in 2026. I think
- 5:29a lot more people are consuming video podcasts.
- 5:32We've seen the numbers from YouTube on people
- 5:34watching on YouTube and consuming on Spotify.
- 5:37And obviously Apple has been monitoring this
- 5:39too with them adding video elements to their
- 5:42hosting as well. So video isn't going anywhere.
- 5:45And yeah, you probably should. at least consider
- 5:49making a video podcast in 2026. So reason number
- 5:53one that you would want to add video to your
- 5:56podcast is that it does help with retention.
- 6:00Listeners will spend more time with you when
- 6:02they can see you talking to the camera, when
- 6:04they can see your face, when they can see your
- 6:06emotions, they're gonna hang out longer because
- 6:08they see you, they're connecting with you in
- 6:11that way. It's the same reason we watch our favorite
- 6:14creators on TikTok and Reels and all those things.
- 6:16We see their face, we recognize... we want to
- 6:18hang out with them, it kind of becomes this parasocial
- 6:21relationship. So that would be my first reason
- 6:23for adding video podcasting to your content creation
- 6:26list is just keep that retention up and keep
- 6:29that long -term viewership up as much as possible.
- 6:32Reason number two is that video is gonna help
- 6:34you stand out to both in the algorithm and in
- 6:37just social feeds and places like that. In the
- 6:40algorithm, obviously Apple is prioritizing video
- 6:43podcasts, so they're gonna send more love and
- 6:45more listeners and more eyeballs to your content.
- 6:47if you are providing that video. They're telling
- 6:49you what they want. They want video podcasts,
- 6:52so make it. That's kind of as simple as it is.
- 6:55Another reason to add video is, this is part
- 6:57of my content remix strategy, is you can take
- 6:59the video and chop it up into short form things
- 7:02like reels and TikToks and YouTube shorts and
- 7:06Pinterest pins, and people can see you and see
- 7:09clips of the show. Even if you don't have the
- 7:11capacity to produce a full blown video version
- 7:14of every single episode, you can at least take
- 7:17the video file and turn it into short form content
- 7:20and that helps you stand out in Facebook feeds,
- 7:23Instagram feeds, YouTube shorts, all that things
- 7:25that works way better than just a plain audiogram
- 7:27for those sorts of short form content. So video
- 7:30is a great thing to add for just standing out.
- 7:33And reason number three for adding video is kind
- 7:36of tied into reason number two. It gives you
- 7:38more content. You have way more to work with
- 7:40with a video file versus just an audio file and
- 7:44it just helps you Create more and more and more
- 7:47from just one recording so like I'm recording
- 7:49this video episode right now And I will be able
- 7:52to turn it into like I said Pinterest pins and
- 7:54shorts and tick tocks and clips and still frames
- 7:58of images video can be stretched a lot further
- 8:02than just a simple audio file can. So that would
- 8:04be my third reason for adding video to your content
- 8:07creation this year. Now let's get into three
- 8:09reasons why you shouldn't add video to your podcast
- 8:13in 2026. Number one, video adds so much more
- 8:17to your workload. It's a bigger file to edit.
- 8:21You gotta be more concise with your cuts to make
- 8:24sure it's flowing as smoothly as possible. If
- 8:27you don't feel comfortable using video editing
- 8:29software, that might be a big hurdle for you
- 8:31as well. So if you don't have the budget to pay
- 8:34a video editor and you're doing it all on your
- 8:36own and you're just overwhelmed by the thought
- 8:39of it, don't do it. That's a great reason not
- 8:41to do it. If you're overwhelmed, you don't have
- 8:43the capacity to hire someone, don't add video
- 8:45to your podcast. Reason number two to not add
- 8:49video to your podcast content creation is that
- 8:52video gets expensive really quick. Podcasting
- 8:55can get expensive quick if you're not careful.
- 8:56You buy all this gear and all the fun stuff because
- 8:59you think that's what's going to make it better.
- 9:01But in reality, that's not what makes it better.
- 9:03Everyone's just looking for great content and
- 9:05learning something and taking things away from
- 9:07what you have to say in your perspectives. So
- 9:10video can get really expensive, buying a nice
- 9:12camera, making sure you have a microphone that
- 9:14can connect to that camera, video editing software
- 9:17is... expensive if you are paying for some really
- 9:20good stuff so it can get expensive and if you
- 9:23don't want to invest in video and you don't want
- 9:26to do video then you shouldn't have to do video
- 9:28so that's reason number two to not add video
- 9:31to your content creation and reason number three
- 9:33to not add video to your podcast in 2026 would
- 9:37be that your audience might not want it from
- 9:39you they just straight up might not want video
- 9:42versions of your podcast i know for my own show
- 9:45the one that you're listening to right now the
- 9:47youtube numbers way lower than the actual audio
- 9:51podcast download numbers. I'm still making a
- 9:53video version of every episode because it's just
- 9:56part of my content stack and honestly I use this
- 9:59show to test out new things and it's kind of
- 10:01a guinea pig for all of my clients but I am still
- 10:04making the video version in hopes that maybe
- 10:07people want it. I don't know. I think people
- 10:09are just resonating more with the audio version.
- 10:11If I was paying for this video service and seeing
- 10:14the results I'm seeing, I would probably cut
- 10:16back on it if I'm being honest. Like I'm not
- 10:18getting the results from the video version that
- 10:21I am from the audio version. So think about that
- 10:25in your own show's terms. Like if people are
- 10:28resonating with the audio, just keep focusing
- 10:30on making great audio. There's some really great
- 10:32services that can turn it into a video. It's
- 10:35more of an audiogram. It's not like a face -to
- 10:37-face video like the one that you're maybe watching
- 10:40on YouTube or maybe watching on Apple podcasts,
- 10:42but there are ways to take your audio and make
- 10:45it a video file. RSS .com actually does it automatically
- 10:48with just the click of a button as part of their
- 10:50distribution system, so. If you don't have the
- 10:53capacity to make this full -blown video, don't
- 10:55do it. And if your audience isn't resonating
- 10:57with it, don't spend the time and energy and
- 10:59money on it because obviously they're getting
- 11:01enough from you with just the audio. So just
- 11:03put all your eggs in that basket. So what does
- 11:06Apple Podcasts adding video to their platform
- 11:08mean for people in this industry in 2026? It
- 11:12means that podcasting is no longer just the audio
- 11:16only show that we all have known it to be the
- 11:20past couple decades. It's changing into a multimedia
- 11:23format for every. Buddy, this isn't just for
- 11:26the big name shows. This is for every one. I
- 11:29mean even Netflix is Sharing video podcasts now.
- 11:32That's a big thing that is coming up in 2026
- 11:35So what this means for podcasters is that if
- 11:37you stay audio only you're gonna want to be really
- 11:40intentional about it Make sure you're putting
- 11:41out some really great audio content making some
- 11:44good clean edits Making it sound really professional
- 11:47because that's what's gonna help you stand out
- 11:48in the long term If you add video, make sure
- 11:51that you're setting it up in a way. That is a
- 11:53system that is simple and repeatable and doable
- 11:56for either you or an editor to accomplish because
- 11:59you're gonna want to stay consistent with no
- 12:01matter what choice you make whether that choice
- 12:03is to add video or not and either way your show
- 12:06can still grow. The biggest thing that I tell
- 12:08every single podcaster that I work with is do
- 12:11what is consistent for you to do without feeling
- 12:14burnt out or overwhelmed. I just had a session
- 12:17right before I recorded this actually where she
- 12:19was asking me like, well, what does it look like?
- 12:21Do I need to have a half hour episode? Do I need
- 12:23to put out an episode every week? What do I need
- 12:24to do? What's the right answer? And I always
- 12:26say there is no right answer. The right answer
- 12:29is what works best for you and your life and
- 12:32your goals with podcasting. If it's an audio
- 12:35only podcast, that is doubling as an email newsletter
- 12:38for your audience and a way to connect with them
- 12:41deeper, great, do that. If it's a video podcast
- 12:44where you're grabbing social clips from it, so
- 12:46you have something to share on social media,
- 12:48awesome, do that. Do whatever makes the most
- 12:50sense for you and your business and your goals
- 12:53and whatever you can do to stay consistent because
- 12:55that's the most important piece. If you're looking
- 12:57to add video to your Apple podcasting setup,
- 13:00be sure that you check out the link in the show
- 13:02notes below. I have some great resources for
- 13:04different articles talking about how that is
- 13:06working. And I'm excited to see how this plays
- 13:09out over the next couple months. I'm excited
- 13:11to see what podcasts really latch onto this.
- 13:14I'm excited to see what it looks like to upload
- 13:16video and get it out there from. Production standpoint
- 13:19obviously we're kind of all figuring this out
- 13:21as we go together So I'll definitely be sure
- 13:24to update you with anything that I think is interesting
- 13:26on that front But in the meantime if you are
- 13:28looking for help with your audio or video podcast
- 13:32I can help produce both for you, or if you just
- 13:34have questions. I'd be happy to answer those
- 13:36as well We are here to learn and grow and make
- 13:38some great podcast content both audio and video
- 13:41together So be sure you reach out to me at abbygravesproductions
- 13:45.com I will catch you next week for another episode
