Transcript
- 0:12Hello Melissa Craig here with the Field podcast back with
- 0:15someone on one time with me this week, but I hope you find
- 0:18empowering and supportive. Today we're going to be touching
- 0:21on using and utilizing and identifying your values, your
- 0:27why, what lights you up, what gets you up every day and it
- 0:32makes you feel excited to be alive, motivate you, gives you
- 0:36something to feel purposeful around.
- 0:40And so many times when we go to identify our values or our wire,
- 0:45someone asked us that question. We're not even sure we haven't
- 0:48stopped check in for a while. We followed a script that
- 0:51society has told us it would lead us to success or happiness
- 0:55or contentment, but we never stopped to consider if it's
- 0:58actually what we care about, what we are passionate about,
- 1:02what we're aligned with, and or even if we did start there, have
- 1:06we generalized up lately? And so it's just, it's, it gives
- 1:09you a compass, it gives you a foundation to operate from.
- 1:13And it really helps you identify where you need healthy
- 1:17boundaries, where you need to make shifts.
- 1:19And you know, when your values are not in alignment, you feel
- 1:23the angst in your soul. But so many times we push it
- 1:27down, we push it back because it's inconvenient.
- 1:30We don't think we have the time or we don't think it's a good
- 1:34season to make a change for all kinds of reasons.
- 1:37Supporting family, taking care of aging parents.
- 1:41We just started a new job, whatever the case may be, or
- 1:44we're just, it makes us feel uncomfortable to think about it.
- 1:48But I, I, I know from my own experience that this has so
- 1:53much, no pun intended, value. So I'm really going to challenge
- 1:58you this week to consider this question and really identify
- 2:02those values that why behind what lights you up every day and
- 2:07see and check in if you're living your life in alignment
- 2:11with that. Because this can give you such
- 2:14a, like I said earlier, a great foundation to operate from to
- 2:18know what to say yes and no to. If it's aligned with my values,
- 2:22it's a yes. If it's not aligned with my
- 2:24values, then it's going to have to be a no.
- 2:27And it keeps us and protects us from abandoning ourselves and
- 2:31getting outside of what we have have time for, what we have the
- 2:34energy for around people and places and spaces that may not
- 2:39be as healthy for us or we may not be healthy for them.
- 2:42And you can go. You can go both ways.
- 2:44So we're going to dive into that in this one-on-one conversation
- 2:48today. So to start with, I want you to
- 2:52think about, like I said earlier, do you know what your
- 2:56why is, what your values are? If you have trouble with this,
- 3:00go back and revisit where you set your boundaries and why you
- 3:05set your boundaries there. We've had the boundaries
- 3:08conversation a couple, a few times on here.
- 3:10That's something I talked about for you regularly, but we really
- 3:13visited it hardcore a couple weeks ago.
- 3:16And so maybe going back to that and like, OK, I have these
- 3:21boundaries here. Are they in alignment with my
- 3:23values? Do I need to ship or I've got no
- 3:25boundaries at all? So I really need to sit down
- 3:28with myself and identify those values.
- 3:31And it starts with those questions that we refer to
- 3:33throughout this field framework of what like what fills my cup,
- 3:38what activities nourish me? How would I describe myself?
- 3:43And then from there, OK, know that I'm getting to know myself
- 3:47in that way. How do I want to feel the next
- 3:49six months? OK, that starts to tell you what
- 3:53you value, what you care about, where you want to be spending
- 3:58your time and energy, what makes you feel alive and focused and
- 4:03purpose filled. And, and this just really helps
- 4:07you name what you value. And it, like I said, it's
- 4:12important to visit this regularly because our ages, our
- 4:17seasons, our locations that we live, our partnerships, our
- 4:22relationships, all of these things over time, whether we
- 4:25have a job change, impact our values, or we just learn more,
- 4:31life teaches us more. We have wisdom.
- 4:34So then we realize, OK, I'm going to unlearn and relearn
- 4:38some new things here. These all these things impact
- 4:42what we value, what our values are.
- 4:44And then there's many of us, there's some core values that
- 4:48will always be a part of us and and that is true like I, I will
- 4:52always have always and I'm confident I will always value
- 4:56travel and all that I learned from it.
- 4:59I have and always will be loyal that and that that's something
- 5:04that's very inherent in me. I'm very passionate about women.
- 5:10That's something that's very inherent in me.
- 5:13But then how I show up in that value or whether there's others
- 5:17that have been added or removed may shift over time.
- 5:20So it's really important to revisit this.
- 5:24There are this can even be more true for your why so your
- 5:29values. Even if your values don't see a
- 5:31lot of shifts, maybe your why behind them changes.
- 5:34Pay attention to your titles, your roles, your locations,
- 5:39changes that happen in the world, in your city and your
- 5:44family dynamic knowledge that you've gained.
- 5:47Like I said, those things you're unlearning and relearning and
- 5:51gaining perspective on that have shifted.
- 5:55That may impact OK, my why here for doing this before at least
- 6:01because I was really aligned with this group.
- 6:04Some things have shifted. I'm not as in alignment with
- 6:07them anymore, so my why has shifted.
- 6:10So how do I shift with that to match up my life with where I am
- 6:14now, not where I was 5-10 years ago?
- 6:17If you start feeling uneasy on how you're engaging with your
- 6:22life, that's a clue that it's time to revisit this question.
- 6:27This may also coincide with looking at things that nourish
- 6:31you. Like I said earlier, if you're,
- 6:33you know, revisit that. What nourishes me?
- 6:35Has that changed? How do I describe myself?
- 6:39What else have I learned about myself that would add to how
- 6:42I've described myself? Or have I done some healing?
- 6:45In some ways that is making it so I'm not as much one way as I
- 6:49used to be. I'm for me, I am not nearly as
- 6:52I'm still very passionate, but I'm not nearly as reactive as I
- 6:56used to be. That is a thing that an
- 6:59adjective that has changed about me.
- 7:02So looking at those things to make sure you know you're
- 7:06describing yourself currently. If you're describing yourself
- 7:08currently, you're identifying what nourishes you currently.
- 7:12That will then let you know are my values that things that I
- 7:16value that I care about current with that or have those shifted
- 7:19to it can This could also inform you.
- 7:23Again, I talked about boundaries earlier but also expectations.
- 7:28I'm living out if I'm not. If my values are out of date and
- 7:32my why is out of date. I haven't checked in with myself
- 7:34in a while. I'm feeling an angst.
- 7:36I may start unknowingly this. We kind of do this
- 7:39subconsciously as we adjust. I may be living out of it, a
- 7:42system of expectations that aren't really mine.
- 7:46They're my expectations of my former self, but they're not the
- 7:49expectations of my current self. So also making sure that that's
- 7:54an alignment. All these things are tied
- 7:55together. They all connect, they all
- 7:58impact each other and they're all part of our caring for
- 8:02ourselves well. And these things impact our
- 8:06mental, emotional, physical, school health when they're not
- 8:09in alignment, when we haven't updated and checked in with
- 8:12ourselves in a while. And make sure these, like I
- 8:16said, these things that you make shifts in that you are feeling
- 8:21out of alignment with check in as you're adjusting, that you're
- 8:25not continually trying to satisfy other people, that
- 8:30you're not trying to meet other people's expectations, that
- 8:33you're not trying to not disappoint someone.
- 8:37Make sure because we hear so many narratives as women and we
- 8:42start getting there from an early age, it can be really
- 8:45difficult to decipher what is ours versus what is others.
- 8:50And even if we've updated and like, oh, I'm not going to do
- 8:53that anymore. It's easy over time to kind of
- 8:57gradually slip back into some of those things if we're not
- 9:00regularly checking in with ourselves.
- 9:02And so something that I like to do, you know, once a year
- 9:06sometimes, I usually do it around the new year.
- 9:09I'll look at my, why all my values, the things I care about,
- 9:11the work that I'm doing, why I'm showing up with all my
- 9:14relationships. And I'll ask myself, I'll
- 9:16revisit this and be like, am I feeling like I'm still in
- 9:21alignment? Am I still showing up in a way
- 9:23that feels honoring to me? Or there's some things that need
- 9:26to shift. It's just a really healthy way
- 9:30to check in with yourself. And just remember to trust
- 9:34yourself. If you're feeling an angst, it's
- 9:37there for a reason. No one knows you better than
- 9:41you. But that takes time because
- 9:43sometimes we lose who we are because we have lived according
- 9:48to a value system that was set out for us or that we've adopted
- 9:53or adapted to because we didn't want to create any friction in
- 9:58an area. But in doing that, we start
- 10:01losing our there's bigger friction down the road.
- 10:04We don't check in to make sure these are our values.
- 10:07These are from us. This is what we truly believe
- 10:10and truly care about. So remember, no one knows you
- 10:14better than you. And that inner knowing will let
- 10:16you know and give you clues that something's out of alignment,
- 10:21out of whack, needs to be checked in with and make sure
- 10:26that we're retiring. As you check in with yourself
- 10:28that you are retiring in accurate narratives that are not
- 10:33healthy for you, you're not treating these things as truth
- 10:38just because it's something that was taught to your show, to your
- 10:41model, to you. It might be a way of doing
- 10:44things and a narrative that doesn't mean it's healthy for
- 10:47you or true for you. So retiring those inaccurate
- 10:51narratives, naming them is inaccurate.
- 10:54Renaming what is true for you. And and that could take time in
- 10:58practice. So when you're practicing and
- 11:01communicating, this is what I value.
- 11:04This is what I care about. Yes, I know it's a shift, but as
- 11:08I've continued to get to know myself and lean in and trust
- 11:13what my body and my inner knowing is telling me, then I
- 11:17know this is the trajectory that is healthy for me.
- 11:20I hope you can honor that because again, as we make these
- 11:23shifts, it's really important to communicate that as we as we are
- 11:28doing this because people aren't mind readers and these things do
- 11:32require communication and connection and action that is
- 11:36consistent. No more abandoning ourselves in
- 11:40order to please others. When we know what our values
- 11:42are, when we know what we care about, what is in alignment with
- 11:46us, it gives us again, I said earlier that foundation, that
- 11:50framework to know what it is we're saying yes and no to.
- 11:53It's having a great conversation with a future guest today on as
- 11:58I was recording earlier today, her name's Eva Kennedy.
- 12:01You're going to hear from her this summer.
- 12:04And we talked a lot about this importance of the values and
- 12:08that when you know what to say yes and no to, you're no longer
- 12:13abandoning yourself. She took some time to really sit
- 12:17with herself during her life to really evaluate that.
- 12:21And it's just, it just clarifies everything for you.
- 12:26All right, some ways to engage with this as we get ready to
- 12:30wrap up this conversation about identifying our why and our
- 12:33values. And some of this is going to be
- 12:35what I've repeated earlier in this conversation, but I'm
- 12:38repeating it for the sake of importance.
- 12:41I want to make sure that this is that you grab onto this and
- 12:44really hear this today. If you're having trouble
- 12:47identifying your why, revisit what activities and causes
- 12:53nourish you, fill your cup, make you feel alive.
- 12:58Think about those 5 words that describe how you want to feel
- 13:02the next six months and where are your values in relation to
- 13:07those. Where is there need to be any
- 13:09adjustments there? Use those answers to help narrow
- 13:13this down. Kind of retire what is no longer
- 13:17true and usher in what is now true.
- 13:22Ask yourself if you're what you're engaged with currently is
- 13:26aligned with it. So going and looking at that
- 13:28calendar that spaces and places you're giving your time and
- 13:32energy to, where do they need to be?
- 13:34Some shifts, sometimes these can be difficult questions and
- 13:37difficult decisions. It may need you time to put a
- 13:40plan in place. And like, you know what, I've
- 13:42been on this board now, but this this nonprofit and I were no
- 13:47longer in an alignment. So how do I start the process of
- 13:52not leaving them in a lurch, but making the natural progression
- 13:56of moving away from that cause and moving into something that
- 13:59is more aligned in a way that allows them to replace me but
- 14:03also is honoring me? So these aren't all the things
- 14:06we can make overnight, but that's an example of something.
- 14:08You start putting a plan in place and seeing some progress
- 14:11and moving towards what is actually in alignment with your
- 14:14current self in this this time frame.
- 14:18This can also really help again when you revisit your healthy
- 14:22boundaries and living out of your own expectations.
- 14:25Your values, your healthy boundaries, and your living out
- 14:28of your own expectations versus others are all tied in.
- 14:32Identifying those values gives clarity to whether you are
- 14:36living out of yours or someone else's expectations and where
- 14:39you need to set those healthy boundaries.
- 14:41It just gives you that foundation to operate from.
- 14:45I hope you found this helpful today.
- 14:47I hope you found this supportive.
- 14:49This is springtime as we're doing our spring cleaning.
- 14:52Sometimes it's the spring cleaning is within our minds and
- 14:55our calendars and checking in with ourselves and refreshing
- 14:59and renewing and meeting ourselves where we are today.
- 15:02So check in with yourself this week and and make sure that you
- 15:06are up to date with yourself and are operating from where you
- 15:11currently live, from where you currently live your life with an
- 15:17whether it's a spatial location or whether it's in your belief
- 15:21systems, the things that you've learned and unlearned, all those
- 15:24things. Check in with yourself today and
- 15:27use this as a tool to guide you to live in alignment and show up
- 15:31as your healthiest, most authentic self.
- 15:33You are valuable, you are worthy and you get to choose.
- 15:36Take care of good, take good care of yourself, and we'll see
- 15:39you next time here on the Field podcast.
