- 0:01Speaker 1: She's on the Money.
- 0:03Speaker 2: She's on the Money.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money's Friday Dreams.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Now you guys all know by now. My name is
- 0:22Speaker 1: Victoria Devine. I'm a financial advisor, I'm a millennial, and
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm a woman who is wildly passionate about financial freedom. Now,
- 0:29Speaker 1: our friend Georgia, she's back this week, which is very exciting,
- 0:32Speaker 1: And this week we are also joined again by Ryan
- 0:36Speaker 1: and Jess Well the very second episode Friday Drinks episode
- 0:39Speaker 1: of twenty twenty one. Now, this week we're going to
- 0:43Speaker 1: be talking all things investment, in line with the investment
- 0:46Speaker 1: episode we did on Wednesday, which is very exciting. But
- 0:50Speaker 1: first and foremost, friends, let's go through the Facebook group
- 0:53Speaker 1: and talk about our favorite posts of the week and
- 0:56Speaker 1: what we've seen going on in there, because it is
- 0:59Speaker 1: arguably my favorite place on the internet. Let's start with you,
- 1:02Speaker 1: Georgia King.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Oh fabulous, I'm glad.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I'm so prepared, although I've been told not to call
- 1:07Speaker 1: you Georgia King anymore. So, Georgia, would you like you.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Call me what you want?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Girl, I'll do when you're around. Georgia, would you like
- 1:16Speaker 1: to start or should we let the fam know that
- 1:18Speaker 1: we've got some delightful vodka cruises.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I didn't know if we were going to be talking
- 1:22Speaker 3: about that.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Should we?
- 1:23Speaker 3: I mean we should because it justifies our laughing. When
- 1:25Speaker 3: Jess tried to drink.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The whole yeah, I was like, I can't drink.
- 1:30Speaker 3: You're going to get I'm just but you know you
- 1:32Speaker 3: can just sit at the top without putting the whole
- 1:34Speaker 3: bottom to this. Have we killed enough time for Georgia
- 1:39Speaker 3: to have found Yeah, we've got one.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Okay, so I'm going to start off quite gently here
- 1:45Speaker 2: because I don't know what you guys have in store.
- 1:47Speaker 2: So this one is from Belinda. Instead of purchasing a
- 1:50Speaker 2: book online that can be quite pricey, you.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Saw this one. Always saw this one.
- 1:54Speaker 2: So she was going to buy on the Kindle app
- 1:57Speaker 2: for fifteen dollars, but instead she went on the lip
- 2:00Speaker 2: app so not even the library, and she found an
- 2:03Speaker 2: e book for free from the library. Did anyone know
- 2:05Speaker 2: that was a thing?
- 2:06Speaker 1: What's libby app?
- 2:07Speaker 2: I'm assuming it's like a library app.
- 2:10Speaker 4: It sounds like the millennial version of a library.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, and it's legit because I know sometimes I
- 2:15Speaker 3: mean some people will google like so and so pdf
- 2:19Speaker 3: or try and get a textbook for free.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I've done that, We're all guilty of that.
- 2:22Speaker 3: But this app it seems like it's a real legit thing.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I trust Belinda, but I'm going to
- 2:30Speaker 2: look it up later. Libby sounds good, and I mean,
- 2:33Speaker 2: libraries are also very underrated just in general. Don't you
- 2:36Speaker 2: think I would agree?
- 2:38Speaker 1: There's so much stuff. I mean, when when she's on
- 2:41Speaker 1: the money book comes out, I guess we'd probably not
- 2:44Speaker 1: promote libraries and promote you purchases.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Email me and I'll send you a free people Now
- 2:50Speaker 3: that is a good win though, absolutely, jess what have
- 2:52Speaker 3: you got?
- 2:52Speaker 4: Minus? From our friend Tiana. She is in Brisbane and
- 2:56Speaker 4: they are currently looked down and can relate feel for
- 2:58Speaker 4: you guys.
- 2:59Speaker 1: We are Melbourne, so like your three days, we raise
- 3:02Speaker 1: you four months.
- 3:03Speaker 2: That's true.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Hopefully it doesn't go that away for them. But she
- 3:06Speaker 4: said money win, not going out for dinner Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
- 3:09Speaker 4: not going out for drinks. That's a lot of money
- 3:11Speaker 4: in her pocket.
- 3:12Speaker 1: That's a pretty good money win. I feel like put
- 3:14Speaker 1: that in your savings account so you don't miss out
- 3:16Speaker 1: on that win as well, like transfer what you would
- 3:19Speaker 1: have spent to savings so that it really does work
- 3:21Speaker 1: as hard as you are currently working in Io, honey.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Pee, because we've all been in isolation this year, and
- 3:27Speaker 3: I can honestly say not all of it, but a
- 3:29Speaker 3: lot of the money I saved during lockdown, I totally
- 3:31Speaker 3: made up for it in probably the three or four
- 3:33Speaker 3: weeks coming out. Is that fair to say?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah, Like take it off yourself so you can't spend
- 3:37Speaker 1: it later. He's the key tape there.
- 3:39Speaker 3: My favorite post is by Sheila Anderson and she just
- 3:43Speaker 3: says this speaks to me on a deep level with
- 3:45Speaker 3: her caption, and it's the how DoD we describe that
- 3:48Speaker 3: Leonardo DiCaprio meme where it's from what movie is that from?
- 3:52Speaker 1: This can go one of two ways. Ryan's about to
- 3:54Speaker 1: try and explain. I'm about to try and explain really well,
- 3:57Speaker 1: or it could go miserably buck him.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I back him in what.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Is is it? The nineteen twenties? One?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, great, a great gat No.
- 4:05Speaker 3: No, it's the other one with Tarantino made Romeo and
- 4:08Speaker 3: Juliet No with Jamie Fox in a Jango j Yes,
- 4:14Speaker 3: it's the meme from Django Unchained where I feel like
- 4:17Speaker 3: if I do the noise, everyone will understand. It looks
- 4:20Speaker 3: like he's going, does everyone know the meme I'm talking about?
- 4:25Speaker 3: So this is what it says, and again describing a
- 4:29Speaker 3: meme on audio, Oh my god, there's gotta been about it.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Me finally catching up on all my bills my car
- 4:36Speaker 3: and then it's a picture of the engine light coming on,
- 4:38Speaker 3: and the engine light is being held by Leonardo DiCaprio
- 4:41Speaker 3: going hard.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Relate. I actually known on this d.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Go and look up Sheila Anderson's post. It's in the
- 4:51Speaker 3: Facebook group. But it is so true. You finally catch
- 4:53Speaker 3: up on all your bills and then that little light
- 4:55Speaker 3: pops up on your car and you're like, are you
- 4:57Speaker 3: including me? Six months I've been looking forward to being
- 5:00Speaker 3: free and Bill Frae mmmmm.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I feel like that summarized. We're all with Shila. If
- 5:04Speaker 1: that's the premise of the meme, I feel like I've
- 5:06Speaker 1: picked a money win from the community that is definitely
- 5:09Speaker 1: not on the same page as everybody else's. But I
- 5:11Speaker 1: thought it was really cool. So Alana posted that for Christmas,
- 5:15Speaker 1: she brought herself some period undies and now now we're
- 5:18Speaker 1: going from Django unchained to periods. I don't know. This
- 5:22Speaker 1: is arguably a lot more diverse than we thought it
- 5:24Speaker 1: was going to be. But essentially she said that a
- 5:27Speaker 1: little change in how she's been doing things for the
- 5:29Speaker 1: last fifteen years, but she's super stoked with them and
- 5:32Speaker 1: she'll be definitely buying some for her daughters when the
- 5:34Speaker 1: time comes. So for me, I really liked this post
- 5:37Speaker 1: because one, we're promoting more sustainable ways to live our lives,
- 5:41Speaker 1: but two, you guys loved this posts. There was so
- 5:44Speaker 1: many comments on this I think this post reached more
- 5:47Speaker 1: than half of our community, which is actually pretty big, guys,
- 5:51Speaker 1: And I just really liked that we had this open,
- 5:54Speaker 1: honest conversation. There were more than five hundred comments on
- 5:56Speaker 1: this post of you guys just talking about how you
- 5:58Speaker 1: manage your periods and like, if that's not us coming
- 6:01Speaker 1: into twenty twenty one, I don't know what is, because
- 6:04Speaker 1: let's take back that power. And I really liked the conversation.
- 6:07Speaker 1: And there were so many people that were like, oh
- 6:08Speaker 1: my gosh, yes, how are they going? Are they a
- 6:10Speaker 1: thing that I actually want to try? Like which ones
- 6:12Speaker 1: do you use? People were making really cool recommendations, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: it was just a really good post that I got
- 6:17Speaker 1: a lot out.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Of So are they genuinely really expensive?
- 6:20Speaker 1: They're not the cheapest thing to buy. But at the
- 6:22Speaker 1: same time, like a box of twelve tampons could cost
- 6:25Speaker 1: you like four or five bucks, Ye, so buy them
- 6:27Speaker 1: twelve pound stuff. Yeah, that stuff adds up. You definitely
- 6:30Speaker 1: don't just use twelve tampons. Yeah, not that you'd understand rhyme,
- 6:33Speaker 1: But welcome to Shees on the money. Thanks and maybe happeriod.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I feel like.
- 6:39Speaker 1: It's not a bad thing to talk about. It's not
- 6:41Speaker 1: something that impacts just women, like periods are a thing,
- 6:44Speaker 1: full stop, end of story for a lot of people.
- 6:46Speaker 1: So earlier this week we were talking about investments on
- 6:49Speaker 1: the podcast, and we talked about the different asset classes
- 6:51Speaker 1: that we had, and I thought it lent really well
- 6:54Speaker 1: to actually asking a couple of questions of our team
- 6:57Speaker 1: and how we want to invest in, maybe what we're
- 6:59Speaker 1: thinking about investing in in twenty twenty one, and maybe
- 7:02Speaker 1: what we've already done already. So back to you, Jess.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I know that one of your goals is actually to
- 7:06Speaker 1: start investing or understand investing a little bit more because
- 7:08Speaker 1: you mentioned it on our first podcast. If the year,
- 7:11Speaker 1: can you tell me a little bit about why and
- 7:13Speaker 1: when and where, and like, what's the plan.
- 7:15Speaker 4: I want to get into big girl investing. Put on
- 7:17Speaker 4: my big girl pants. I know and understand the lay
- 7:21Speaker 4: of the land in terms of micro investing.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I get it.
- 7:23Speaker 4: I think a lot of our community members can relate.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I'm kind of at the point where I'm like, I
- 7:27Speaker 4: don't have a spare twenty grand lying around to just
- 7:30Speaker 4: chuck on in there, but I'm ready to commit to allocating,
- 7:32Speaker 4: like you know, a portion of my pay every month
- 7:35Speaker 4: to kind of let that build and let that grow.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I want to prioritize it. So I'm thinking after that
- 7:40Speaker 4: last podcast on Wednesday that ETFs would maybe be the
- 7:44Speaker 4: way to go. I'm looking at you with questions in
- 7:45Speaker 4: my eyes so.
- 7:46Speaker 1: That I'm not just your boss, I'm also your personal
- 7:48Speaker 1: financial advisor now, so we can work that out.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Love that for me, No, but yeah, I think just
- 7:54Speaker 4: figuring out kind of what that next step is, and
- 7:56Speaker 4: I feel like we have something exciting coming that might
- 7:57Speaker 4: be able to help me out a little bit along
- 7:59Speaker 4: the way, which really nice, but kind of that that
- 8:01Speaker 4: middle step, I'm not you know, like Wolf of Wall Street,
- 8:04Speaker 4: like money coming out of my ears. But also I'm
- 8:07Speaker 4: not just chucking five bucks in my raise every month either.
- 8:10Speaker 1: So tell me a little bit about what stopped you
- 8:13Speaker 1: so far.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I just didn't know enough. I think, like I just
- 8:16Speaker 4: was very uneducated, and it is obviously intimidating, not when
- 8:20Speaker 4: you don't know something. And obviously you hear a lot
- 8:23Speaker 4: about the stock market potentially being volatile, and you're like, oh,
- 8:25Speaker 4: I don't want to put money in and then not
- 8:27Speaker 4: have money come out, and it's a whole thing. And
- 8:30Speaker 4: then obviously I am kind of balancing saving for a
- 8:33Speaker 4: house deposit as well. But I think, you know, with
- 8:35Speaker 4: some careful planning and thinking about it and obviously coming
- 8:39Speaker 4: to my personal financial advisor a couple of times a week,
- 8:42Speaker 4: I can figure out a way to make that work
- 8:43Speaker 4: for me.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Ryan John, what are your thoughts on investing?
- 8:46Speaker 3: Do you do it well? I do, as you know,
- 8:49Speaker 3: v I am. It sounds like a really wanky book title,
- 8:52Speaker 3: but I call it an accidental property investor.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So gently fell into the ownerships most entitled in Australia.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Like I said, it sounded like a wanky book title
- 9:04Speaker 3: that something like Get Rich Quick scam artists would put out,
- 9:07Speaker 3: But basically I bought a really cheap apartment when I
- 9:10Speaker 3: lived in regional Western Australia, and I bought it for
- 9:12Speaker 3: about two hundred and fifteen thousand dollars, which is just
- 9:15Speaker 3: crazy to think now that I'm in Melbourne, because that
- 9:17Speaker 3: would buy you literally nothing.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I don't even think you can buy a car park
- 9:20Speaker 1: in the Melbourne.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Car So I bought a house and I had a
- 9:25Speaker 3: person from work living in the spare room and renting
- 9:27Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So wait, it was like a more than one bedroom.
- 9:31Speaker 3: The two bedroom apartment on the beach in Western Australia. Yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 3: so on the way towards Margaret River, and I was
- 9:36Speaker 3: working in regional radio there and that's actually where I
- 9:39Speaker 3: met my now wife, Bridget, because she's a winemaker and
- 9:41Speaker 3: was working in the Margaret River money and I know
- 9:44Speaker 3: so she herself had just bought a house.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Just for those of you playing along at home. That
- 9:48Speaker 1: was another mention of Ryan's wife.
- 9:50Speaker 3: So Bridget also bought a house, a full proper three
- 9:53Speaker 3: bedroom house, for like two hundred and sixty grand.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Over baller in comparison to years.
- 9:58Speaker 3: I know she was really living it up. We've owned
- 10:00Speaker 3: our own houses before we met, and then we both
- 10:02Speaker 3: moved over to the east side of the country, so suddenly,
- 10:05Speaker 3: by accident, we have these two investment properties because the
- 10:07Speaker 3: market was so low it wasn't worth selling, so we're like, oh,
- 10:10Speaker 3: we'll just get some renters in and without intending to
- 10:13Speaker 3: be property investors, we probably would have chosen to invest
- 10:15Speaker 3: in shares if we were going to choose, but we
- 10:17Speaker 3: just sort of ended up with it, and then we
- 10:19Speaker 3: bought another house in Canberra, and now we've moved to Melbourne,
- 10:21Speaker 3: so we've got those three houses, which again sounds glamorous,
- 10:25Speaker 3: but as Victoria hears me winging, every time I get paid,
- 10:28Speaker 3: I go cool, I need to top up that house,
- 10:30Speaker 3: top up that house, and top up that house. And
- 10:32Speaker 3: until you actually get ahead a little bit, property investing
- 10:35Speaker 3: can definitely sound a lot more glamorous than it really is,
- 10:39Speaker 3: because you're paying council rates, you're paying for when people
- 10:43Speaker 3: message you and go, oh, the dishwasher is broken. Can
- 10:45Speaker 3: you send around a person? And there's all these extra
- 10:47Speaker 3: little fees and stuff, which when we do the property
- 10:49Speaker 3: investing episode we'll talk about. But it is not that
- 10:52Speaker 3: it's a really bad thing overall, but there are a
- 10:54Speaker 3: lot of extra costs that we have to sort of
- 10:56Speaker 3: top up from time to time. And is that a
- 10:59Speaker 3: kind of a common theme with investment properties. You'd say
- 11:01Speaker 3: they can be a lot more expensive and a pain
- 11:03Speaker 3: in the butt that.
- 11:04Speaker 1: People, and I think that people get. I think that
- 11:08Speaker 1: investment property gets romanticized in a way because it sounds
- 11:11Speaker 1: so perfect. You save up your deposit and then you
- 11:13Speaker 1: get a renterer in and they'll pay your mortgage off,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and it just pragmatically doesn't often work that way. You
- 11:19Speaker 1: might meet people that do have the rent that's coming
- 11:21Speaker 1: in each and every single month covering their mortgage, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: that's actually a really great outcome, but a lot of
- 11:26Speaker 1: people don't have that and they have to top it up.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And that's okay, and that's normal. You're still building equity
- 11:32Speaker 1: in that asset. But I think it's really important to
- 11:34Speaker 1: note that, you know, you might save for that deposit,
- 11:37Speaker 1: but then it is an ongoing commitment of your cash
- 11:39Speaker 1: flow essentially for the next thirty years if you're not
- 11:42Speaker 1: paying it off sooner. So I think it's really important
- 11:44Speaker 1: to consider that when talking about investment properties. And yes,
- 11:47Speaker 1: for those of you playing along home Ryan does complain
- 11:49Speaker 1: a lot about.
- 11:52Speaker 3: And the simple thing is to say, oh, we earn
- 11:54Speaker 3: this much in rent, and here's the mortgage, and the
- 11:56Speaker 3: rent kind of covers the mortgage, and that's where you go.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I had with this, But it is the or rates
- 12:01Speaker 3: and the water bill and that sort of stuff that
- 12:02Speaker 3: kind of adds up and we have to pay more.
- 12:04Speaker 3: So we actually put money into it rather than a
- 12:06Speaker 3: good investment which should be giving us money. Yeah, we're
- 12:09Speaker 3: actually giving it money. But we keep reminding ourselves and actually,
- 12:11Speaker 3: ve tell me right now, if this is a good
- 12:12Speaker 3: thing about things that we tell ourselves are even though
- 12:15Speaker 3: we have to top it up here and there, once
- 12:16Speaker 3: they're all paid for in twenty or thirty years, this
- 12:18Speaker 3: is you know, it's like superannuation. Again, it will pay
- 12:21Speaker 3: off in the long run. Are we right in telling
- 12:22Speaker 3: ourselves that.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Or yeah, it's not a bad thing. Once it's all
- 12:25Speaker 1: paid off and you have rent coming in, that does
- 12:27Speaker 1: become an income source for you, especially in retirement, which
- 12:30Speaker 1: is why a lot of people say they really want
- 12:32Speaker 1: investment properties. But the thing with an investment property is
- 12:35Speaker 1: it's super valuable to you once you've paid off the
- 12:38Speaker 1: entire mortgage. So if you're like, oh my gosh, I'm
- 12:40Speaker 1: going to go buy a million dollar property, because the
- 12:43Speaker 1: rental returns on that are really great, but they definitely
- 12:46Speaker 1: aren't covering your million dollar mortgage.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Can I quickly tell a story about the person that's renting.
- 12:51Speaker 3: I wonder if she listens to that. She's a young
- 12:52Speaker 3: school teacher, the girl who rents my apartment in Bumbray.
- 12:55Speaker 3: We get this email and it says, hey, Ryan, there's
- 12:58Speaker 3: something wrong with the hot water. After about twenty minutes
- 13:01Speaker 3: in the shower, the water's not hot anything.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Are you joking?
- 13:05Speaker 4: No?
- 13:05Speaker 3: And I'm guessing she's grown up in a place that
- 13:07Speaker 3: has you know, that was the ever stream or whatever
- 13:09Speaker 3: they're kind of called. And I said, oh, hey, it's finite. Yeah,
- 13:13Speaker 3: it's there's this cupboard off the bathroom it's got that's
- 13:17Speaker 3: the hot water tanks in that like you can see it.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Once it runs out, it's all done. And she says, no, no,
- 13:21Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure there's a problem with the hot water.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And I said, to it, you just don't have so
- 13:26Speaker 3: I send an email. So cool, get the plumber or
- 13:28Speaker 3: the hot water person, whatever you need. If you've just
- 13:31Speaker 3: used all the hot water, then you have to pay
- 13:33Speaker 3: that one hundred dollars fee. For them just to turn
- 13:34Speaker 3: up and if there is legitimately a problem, I'll fix it.
- 13:38Speaker 3: No problems at all, I'll pay for it.
- 13:40Speaker 1: So that is sassy from you, by the way, because
- 13:42Speaker 1: you you knew what wasn't endless hot water.
- 13:46Speaker 3: She wouldn't take it, she wasn't having it. She wasn't
- 13:48Speaker 3: having it, doesn't having it. So I kind of forgot
- 13:49Speaker 3: about it, and then a month later I get this
- 13:51Speaker 3: email and just said, dear Ryan, you will not be
- 13:54Speaker 3: required to pay the.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Plumb Just apologies to you. If you listened to our podcast,
- 14:01Speaker 1: we just made a really great segment out.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Like I said, she's a young school teacher female, which is.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Right, but you might not have understood that, and there
- 14:13Speaker 1: might be some people that are like I fully didn't
- 14:15Speaker 1: understand that. That's not a thing.
- 14:17Speaker 4: What hot water runs out you about your finance.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Utilities. So when I grew up, I had less hot
- 14:25Speaker 1: water at my house.
- 14:27Speaker 3: That says everything you need to know about Victoria divine.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, like that definitely doesn't. But okay, so had
- 14:34Speaker 1: in less hot water, and it was like the ongoing
- 14:37Speaker 1: argument in my house of my parents trying to drag
- 14:40Speaker 1: me out of the shower, like I remember vividly my
- 14:43Speaker 1: dad banging on the door being like, get out of
- 14:46Speaker 1: the shower, and me being like me what he was
- 14:51Speaker 1: trying to do, and as like a sixteen year old,
- 14:54Speaker 1: like try me, sixteen year old Victoria, not a pleasant.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Human getting out of the shower.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Not getting out of the shower, not having whatever you've
- 15:02Speaker 1: got to serve.
- 15:03Speaker 3: All right, we will get to Victoria and Georgia's investments,
- 15:06Speaker 3: but first of all, let's just do a quick message
- 15:09Speaker 3: from our partners. All right, we are talking about our
- 15:25Speaker 3: investments because we did an investment episode a few days ago. Georgia,
- 15:28Speaker 3: key ah, You've been the host of Australia's number one
- 15:31Speaker 3: money podcast. But the last year has any of it
- 15:34Speaker 3: sunk in?
- 15:36Speaker 2: Look bits and pieces here and there? No, No, it hasn't. No,
- 15:42Speaker 2: I'm getting there.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I have.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I was just saying to Jess before that I have
- 15:47Speaker 2: big plans for twenty twenty one, as a lot of
- 15:49Speaker 2: us I do. I think I am again in a
- 15:53Speaker 2: similar position to Jess, still ready to take those steps
- 15:57Speaker 2: into investing properly, the big Girl way. But also I
- 16:02Speaker 2: would be lying if I said that property wasn't still
- 16:05Speaker 2: on the list of to do in the next five
- 16:07Speaker 2: years or so. But I mean, the world is a
- 16:09Speaker 2: crazy place, so who knows if that's possible. But that's
- 16:11Speaker 2: kind of where I'm at.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Does the price of property scare you off and put
- 16:16Speaker 3: you off wanting to save for that? You live right
- 16:19Speaker 3: in town at the moment, right.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Right in town, But I don't think I would buy
- 16:24Speaker 2: up here. I'd go I'm from the beach, so I'd
- 16:26Speaker 2: probably go more regional anyway, which is slightly more affordable,
- 16:29Speaker 2: but still ridiculous.
- 16:30Speaker 3: So it does.
- 16:31Speaker 2: It definitely puts you off. I think it puts us
- 16:33Speaker 2: all off. But I think just continuing to save and
- 16:36Speaker 2: save and save for that is kind of where I'm at.
- 16:39Speaker 2: I can feel Victoria gazing at me from my left
- 16:42Speaker 2: side over here.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I don't think it's a bad idea to do that
- 16:45Speaker 1: at all. No, at the end of the day, I
- 16:47Speaker 1: always say, invest in line with your values and spend
- 16:50Speaker 1: your money where you want to spend your money. What
- 16:53Speaker 1: my job is to actually educate you on all of
- 16:55Speaker 1: the options that exist, and not tell you to go
- 16:58Speaker 1: one way or another just because I do so, or
- 17:00Speaker 1: I say, oh my gosh, shares my favorite shares are
- 17:02Speaker 1: my personal favorite, but like you might like your vodka
- 17:06Speaker 1: Guava Cruzer, but I might like raspberry. That's not true,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but like we might be a little bit different, and
- 17:11Speaker 1: that's totally okay. But my job is literally making sure
- 17:15Speaker 1: that you have the tools and resources available to you
- 17:17Speaker 1: to make the decision that is right for you, not
- 17:19Speaker 1: the decision that is right for me personally. And I
- 17:22Speaker 1: think that's something that's really important to get across as well,
- 17:25Speaker 1: because I think people are like, oh my gosh, I
- 17:26Speaker 1: have to start investing because if she's on the money,
- 17:28Speaker 1: If that's because you've just discovered it and you're starting
- 17:31Speaker 1: to learn about it and it aligns to your goals
- 17:32Speaker 1: and values, fantastic. But I'm not trying to talk you
- 17:34Speaker 1: out of buying your first home if that's your dream,
- 17:36Speaker 1: Like I want that for you so much, but I
- 17:39Speaker 1: don't want you to have that if you feel like
- 17:41Speaker 1: that's your only option.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:43Speaker 2: No, I think I've just learned a lot for sure
- 17:45Speaker 2: doing this podcast for the last twelve thirteen months, and
- 17:49Speaker 2: investing in shares is something I definitely want to do
- 17:51Speaker 2: as well, which I probably if I wasn't the co
- 17:53Speaker 2: host of this podcast, I wouldn't have thought about before.
- 17:56Speaker 1: So thanks me.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Yeah, say the most impressive things that I've heard during
- 18:02Speaker 3: my time working with you guys, that she's on the money.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Is hearing Victoria just give that inspirational speech and putting
- 18:08Speaker 3: vodka cruises as the example. That is a real treat.
- 18:12Speaker 3: All right, So myself, Jess and Georgia have all gone,
- 18:16Speaker 3: do we take a deep breath us three as we
- 18:18Speaker 3: ask Victoria.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Breathe, Frands breathe. It's not Honestly, it is not nearly
- 18:23Speaker 1: as exciting as you would have thought it would be.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I think I'm really opening myself up here to tell
- 18:28Speaker 1: you how much I have invested in Cheese on the Money.
- 18:30Speaker 1: And I did sell a lot of my shares so
- 18:32Speaker 1: that I could invest in Cheese on the Money and
- 18:34Speaker 1: I could fund that. And I'm really grateful that past
- 18:37Speaker 1: me actually had those assets to be able to liquidate
- 18:40Speaker 1: so that I could invest it in Cheese on the Money.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And I'm not saying you should sell your shares and
- 18:43Speaker 1: start a business, but I am saying, if it is
- 18:45Speaker 1: in line with your values. That was something that really
- 18:48Speaker 1: enabled me to make sure that I still held Cheese
- 18:51Speaker 1: on the Money as mine. I didn't have to go
- 18:53Speaker 1: and get someone else in to make sure that I
- 18:55Speaker 1: could keep the cogs turning per se. When it comes
- 18:59Speaker 1: down to it, Yes, I do own a share portfolio.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I'm probably a little bit risky. How did you guys
- 19:04Speaker 1: say that? Coming I own ETFs. I also own direct shares.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I own a well diversified portfolio, like small portfolio of
- 19:12Speaker 1: direct shares. And the reason I do that is purely
- 19:15Speaker 1: because I'm interested in them. It's not well diversified in
- 19:19Speaker 1: the grand scheme of things. It's just purely because I'm like, oh,
- 19:21Speaker 1: I'd really like to follow that. And something that I
- 19:23Speaker 1: get really excited about is actually following my share portfolio
- 19:26Speaker 1: and following the market and seeing what's going on. And
- 19:29Speaker 1: this is one of those things that is to do
- 19:31Speaker 1: as I say, not as I do. And I do
- 19:32Speaker 1: sometimes take a bit of a punt on a share.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'm not saying which ones I have taken punts on historically,
- 19:39Speaker 1: but I do do that because I'm really excited about it,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and I go, oh, my gosh. I've read literally every
- 19:44Speaker 1: annual report of the last ten years of this business,
- 19:47Speaker 1: and I think this is the year for it.
- 19:49Speaker 3: I can confirm that Victoria went in on a punt
- 19:51Speaker 3: and I went in with it, and that has not
- 19:52Speaker 3: been one of the successful ones.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Yea, not yet, not yet, but that I'm very excited
- 19:57Speaker 1: about that. I'm reading there on your reports and oh
- 20:00Speaker 1: my gosh, I'm so.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Excited, George. I think you were there that day.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Say what it is legally I can't, but I think
- 20:07Speaker 1: it's one of those things where I'm really excited about that.
- 20:09Speaker 1: And I told you that was a twelve month minimum play.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Come on, I'm just saying that the first few months
- 20:14Speaker 3: is really.
- 20:16Speaker 1: And I feel I'm still in I'm ready to go.
- 20:19Speaker 1: So over the last twelve months, guys, I bought in
- 20:21Speaker 1: a share and I was very excited about it, and
- 20:23Speaker 1: I did put some money where my mouth was when
- 20:26Speaker 1: I take a punt. And I think this is really
- 20:28Speaker 1: important for you gut us to understand. Is I am
- 20:30Speaker 1: not putting money up that would cripple me if I
- 20:34Speaker 1: lost it. When I take a punt, I'm putting a number,
- 20:36Speaker 1: let's call it, like five hundred dollars up, knowing full
- 20:39Speaker 1: well that if it doesn't go well, I am going
- 20:42Speaker 1: to lose that money. And that is a very privileged
- 20:45Speaker 1: position to be in, to be able to say okay,
- 20:48Speaker 1: I'm going to put this money here because you know,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I do genuinely believe it will change. But if it doesn't,
- 20:52Speaker 1: it doesn't. And this is where people see shares and
- 20:55Speaker 1: they just assume all shares are like this, and it's not.
- 20:58Speaker 1: But I have put some money in a share. I
- 21:00Speaker 1: think I bought in at three dollars fifteen. It's currently
- 21:02Speaker 1: at two dollars thirty nine. So I am not a
- 21:04Speaker 1: winner this week. That might be my money loss, but
- 21:06Speaker 1: I do genuinely, over the long term, believe in this company,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and I'm still really happy that I bought in at
- 21:11Speaker 1: that amount and I back it still. When we talk
- 21:14Speaker 1: about shares, I think it's really important to understand that
- 21:17Speaker 1: I am a little bit more educated than the average
- 21:19Speaker 1: bear when it comes to this kind of stuff. So
- 21:22Speaker 1: for me to go and buy a direct share, it
- 21:24Speaker 1: does not mean that this is what you should be doing.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I did start my investment journey with micro investing platforms,
- 21:30Speaker 1: and I still use micro investing platforms. I use one
- 21:33Speaker 1: that rounds up, and I really like that because it
- 21:35Speaker 1: kind of does add up and it's really exciting, and
- 21:37Speaker 1: I feel like I should have that platform purely because
- 21:41Speaker 1: my community does and I want to be able to
- 21:42Speaker 1: relate to you guys and understand what you're going through,
- 21:45Speaker 1: and when you've got questions, I can send screenshots of
- 21:47Speaker 1: you know, well, this is what that portfolio looks like,
- 21:49Speaker 1: and these are the updates, and these are the things
- 21:51Speaker 1: that I do like. So I do genuinely still use
- 21:54Speaker 1: that and love that and will continue to do so.
- 21:57Speaker 1: But when I do reach a certain amount in that,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I do it into my ETF portfolio. And then I
- 22:03Speaker 1: had cash, and now I have very little cash because
- 22:06Speaker 1: I have just purchased my first home. So for me,
- 22:09Speaker 1: that is what my investment journey looks like. And over
- 22:12Speaker 1: the next twelve months, my priority will be paying off
- 22:15Speaker 1: my mortgage a little bit more, because it makes the
- 22:17Speaker 1: most sense to really stabilize that. My partner and I
- 22:19Speaker 1: really want to pay off enough of that mortgage so
- 22:22Speaker 1: that one of our this isn't going to take twelve months, Frans,
- 22:25Speaker 1: this is going to take a while, but so that
- 22:27Speaker 1: one of our incomes can service the mortgage. And then
- 22:31Speaker 1: once we get to that point, every other dollar that
- 22:33Speaker 1: we earn will go into shares so that we can
- 22:35Speaker 1: turbocharge our future retirement.
- 22:38Speaker 3: So of the investments you have in shares. What percentage
- 22:41Speaker 3: overall would you say are in ETF and what percentage
- 22:43Speaker 3: are in singular stocks? And what percentage would say you
- 22:46Speaker 3: would inverted commas the punt stocks like the kind of.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Okay, friends, binary this all right? So five percent is
- 22:52Speaker 1: in my microinvesting platforms, fifteen percent is in just me
- 22:57Speaker 1: taking a punt, and I would say eighty percent is
- 23:00Speaker 1: in my atfs.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Did that equal one hundreds?
- 23:02Speaker 1: Canyone check that twenty plus five plus fifteen plus eighty
- 23:06Speaker 1: is one hundred, my friend, I'm that's why.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Yeah, the leading financial advisor INDUSTRYLGA.
- 23:12Speaker 1: But I do know exactly what's going on, and I
- 23:14Speaker 1: actually use a platform personally where I have connected everything
- 23:19Speaker 1: up in the background so that I can keep track
- 23:21Speaker 1: of what my overall portfolio is. So something that is
- 23:24Speaker 1: also really important to understand is that a portfolio is
- 23:27Speaker 1: actually everything you own. So Ryan, that would include you
- 23:30Speaker 1: have an investment portfolio, yours just owns property, and Jess,
- 23:34Speaker 1: you have a portfolio. Yours is just currently in cash
- 23:38Speaker 1: and in microinvesting in Georgia, and yours's cash.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Ah, not wrong, not wrong.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But I have a portfolio and it's made up of
- 23:47Speaker 1: lots of different things. It's not one specific portfolio. You
- 23:50Speaker 1: don't have multiple portfolios. You have a portfolio and that
- 23:53Speaker 1: is essentially all the things that are wealth generating assets.
- 23:57Speaker 1: So that is what mine is made up of. Friends,
- 23:59Speaker 1: and I'm very happy to share that. You will see
- 24:01Speaker 1: the ETFs make up a very large amount of that.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And the reason they do is because they are as
- 24:07Speaker 1: stable as it. And as I told you guys, I
- 24:09Speaker 1: am not wealthy enough, not nearly wealthy enough to have
- 24:13Speaker 1: just a direct share portfolio. So just before Georgia King
- 24:17Speaker 1: tries to wrap us, we would really like to acknowledge
- 24:20Speaker 1: and pay respect to Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Straight islander peoples,
- 24:24Speaker 1: the traditional custodians of the lands, the waterways and the
- 24:27Speaker 1: skies all across Australia. We thank you for sharing and
- 24:30Speaker 1: for carrying on the land which we are able to learn.
- 24:32Speaker 1: We pay our respects to elder's past and present, and
- 24:35Speaker 1: we share our friendship and our kindness.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Now, the advice shared on She's on the Money is
- 24:39Speaker 2: general in nature and does not consider your individual circumstances.
- 24:42Speaker 2: She Is on the Money exists purely for educational purposes
- 24:45Speaker 2: and should not be relied upon to make an investment
- 24:48Speaker 2: or a financial decision, and we promise. Victoria Devine is

- 25:02Speaker 2: And a big thank you to Brian Beck and Jess
- 25:04Speaker 2: were putting it all together.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Also to Victoria for bringing good for cruises bloody oh
- 25:10Speaker 1: cheers the table. Also just to remind that just because
- 25:14Speaker 1: we're drinking and the show doesn't mean that we drink excessively.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Please remember to drink responsibly. Friends, See you next week.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Bye bye bye
