Transcript
- 0:21Hi, everyone.
- 0:22Welcome back to this week's episode of mocktail minutes.
- 0:25This is Brianna.
- 0:27No Bailey today.
- 0:28I'm winging it solo.
- 0:30So I'm going to try to.
- 0:34Keep it short for you, but I wanted to give you guys something to think about this week because Bailey and I both get questions regarding.
- 0:44This sort of thing.
- 0:45Often.
- 0:46So before I jump in, I'm going to tell you what I'm sipping on.
- 0:50I got a.
- 0:52Um, I don't know, I found this new little place that does a bunch of like fun drinks anyways.
- 0:58Um, I'm having coconut water blended with fresh mango juice.
- 1:04Um, I don't know.
- 1:05It sounded fun.
- 1:06And I wanted a little pick me up.
- 1:08And it's great because I'm trying to increase my potassium and Mingo and coconut both are high in potassium.
- 1:15So.
- 1:16Just an extra way.
- 1:17To have fun with what I'm drinking, getting the minerals that they need.
- 1:20And.
- 1:22Yeah, enjoy it.
- 1:24Okay.
- 1:24So this week I'm going to try to keep it short.
- 1:27You guys know, I like tangents.
- 1:29I'm going to try really hard, but I want to talk about your pre-workout fuel.
- 1:35Or what you're doing pre workout.
- 1:38So.
- 1:41There's a couple things here, but I'm going to start with.
- 1:45Y.
- 1:47You should be feeling your workouts.
- 1:48So I want, and if you're scared of food or you've been scared of carbs or you're like, oh gosh, I don't know if I need to eat more.
- 1:54I want you to think really quickly about what food does for you food.
- 1:58It gives your body.
- 2:00Energy.
- 2:01Literally.
- 2:02So if you are feeling tired or depleted prior to a workout and you want to feel energized, Taking pre-workout or taking caffeine.
- 2:14Is not going to give you energy.
- 2:16It doesn't have calories.
- 2:17So it literally cannot feel your workout and may make you feel a little wired and jittery.
- 2:22That is a false sense of energy.
- 2:25It's not true energy, energy that you need.
- 2:29Is going to come from food and food alone and particularly carbohydrates.
- 2:34I know.
- 2:35They're scary, but hang in there with me.
- 2:37Hopefully after this episode, this little short episode, you are going to feel a little bit better.
- 2:42About feeling your workouts with carbohydrates.
- 2:46So before that, you know, I already said like, okay, you know, You want to feel it before your workouts, but let's even take it a step back.
- 2:56And think.
- 2:58Why we would want to fuel before workouts, right?
- 3:01So I think a lot of times people.
- 3:04Kind of get this a little bit confused, right?
- 3:07Cause it's like, oh, I want to lose weight.
- 3:08So that means I need to burn calories.
- 3:10So, you know, working out is a great way to burn calories.
- 3:14And then if I eat less on top of that, I'm really just like winning right.
- 3:17So most people will just think like, okay, gosh, pre-workout or something.
- 3:21Simple that doesn't have any calories, more bang for my buck, but that's really how you're going to number one, burn yourself out.
- 3:28Number two, feel like crap Eve either during your workout or after your workout.
- 3:33Three, not really be able to progress in your workouts, meaning you're never going to increase weight.
- 3:38You're never going to increase.
- 3:41Performance really anything.
- 3:43Cause you're not properly fueling your workouts.
- 3:46And then four, you're not going to be able to maintain muscle or I guess, build muscle and then recover.
- 3:52You know, repair it and then maintain it if you were under eating.
- 3:56So I want you to think about why you work out and the answer is not because I want to lose weight.
- 4:01That's not why, if you were working out for the sole purpose of losing weight, That is a bad plan working out.
- 4:09Actually doesn't do much for you in terms of the calorie burn.
- 4:13I just want to throw it out there.
- 4:15It doesn't, it's such a minimal amount of calorie burn for your overall day.
- 4:20It's not the smartest thing now with that being said, You should absolutely be working out, working out is fantastic for your health.
- 4:27You need it.
- 4:28You need it for longevity.
- 4:29You need it for muscle building.
- 4:30You need it to improve your cardiovascular health.
- 4:33Working out is amazing.
- 4:34So if this is you today and you've thought, gosh, the only reason why I work out is because I want to lose weight.
- 4:39Let's maybe change our mindset about working out.
- 4:42Kay's COSO working out.
- 4:44Is to improve your overall body.
- 4:47You need to do it fueled.
- 4:50We have done episodes on post-workout fuel, I believe, or like post-workout recovery.
- 4:55So I'm going to try not to go into depth there.
- 4:57I just really want to focus on the pre-workout and the two things that I see.
- 5:02So I either see number one, people are waking up early in the morning.
- 5:06They are skipping food because it's early and it feels cruddy on their stomach to eat something.
- 5:12And they are having a little bit of coffee.
- 5:15To fuel their workout cause they need the caffeine to get going.
- 5:19Or they are taking a scoop of pre-workout because they decided to wait until the end of the day to work out.
- 5:26And they're exhausted from work or dealing with the kids or doing all the things that we do all day.
- 5:30And you need a pick me up before you can hit a hard workout.
- 5:33So.
- 5:35Both of these things, I'm going to challenge you on because they're not the best.
- 5:39And here's why.
- 5:41So let's start with the coffee.
- 5:43We have talked before about cortisol.
- 5:46I don't want people to be like demonizing cortisol, because we need cortisol to live.
- 5:50It's what gets us out of bed in the morning.
- 5:52It is the highest in the morning.
- 5:54If we didn't have cortisol, we would not be getting out of bed.
- 5:56We would die.
- 5:57Okay.
- 5:58But the issue is prolonged periods of high cortisol, especially like spikes throughout the day.
- 6:05All these things that we don't necessarily want.
- 6:07We don't want high cortisol.
- 6:10Throughout the day.
- 6:11This really impacts how we store fat, how we burn fat, our nervous system, all of the things.
- 6:17So.
- 6:18Your cortisol is highest in the morning.
- 6:21This can be beneficial for you because it can help a workout.
- 6:25The, the other thing.
- 6:28Okay, let me back up.
- 6:29Cortisol is high in the morning.
- 6:31Okay.
- 6:31We know this.
- 6:33Other things that can increase cortisol.
- 6:36Our coffee.
- 6:38And working out.
- 6:40Yes.
- 6:40This spike of cortisol that you get from working out is not a bad thing.
- 6:45But it's something to be mindful of.
- 6:47It is a stressor on your body.
- 6:50It is a good stressor.
- 6:51When we're doing it correctly, we have talked before and here as well about overworking out and what that does for your cortisol and how sometimes we need to pull back a little bit in order to see weight loss because of that manipulation on cortisol.
- 7:06So we know that our cortisol is naturally high in the morning.
- 7:10We know that caffeine spikes cortisol.
- 7:13Again, research does show that if you're someone who's a consistent caffeine drinker, your body kind of adjust to this.
- 7:21Cool.
- 7:22Great.
- 7:22But it's still something you can manipulate.
- 7:25Okay.
- 7:25Like, I don't.
- 7:26I feel like we, we are a broken record at this point.
- 7:29It's not about doing everything perfect.
- 7:31It's not about finding loopholes either.
- 7:33It's about knowing everything that can impact your body.
- 7:37And choosing to manipulate how, and when you do things to best serve, you.
- 7:41So if you're someone who is highly stressed all the time, or you have a lot going on, or you have a busy day after your workout, in my opinion, manipulating your cortisol spike throughout the morning is beneficial to you.
- 7:54Okay.
- 7:54Bottom line.
- 7:56Don't come for me.
- 7:57And if you don't think it is.
- 7:59Then don't do anything that I'm about to tell you.
- 8:01Okay.
- 8:02So we know working out is increases your cortisol.
- 8:05We know coffee increases your cortisol.
- 8:07We know it's the highest in the morning.
- 8:08So if you were someone who wakes up, insulin grabbed some coffee, and then you head to your workout.
- 8:13What you're doing is you were increasing this cortisol spike, and you were prolonging this cortisol spike.
- 8:17So something that can help is to actually properly fuel your workout.
- 8:22And this is the time that I'm going to talk.
- 8:24I'm going to talk about this with the pre-workout as well.
- 8:27I'm going to talk about carbohydrates.
- 8:29Carbohydrates is your main source of energy.
- 8:32It is useful.
- 8:33They are not something to be scared of.
- 8:36We have demonized them so much, but your body loves them.
- 8:39Your thyroid loves them.
- 8:42Your muscles, love them.
- 8:43Everything loves them.
- 8:45And you know what else loves them?
- 8:47Cortisol, because we know that having carbohydrates at breakfast can decrease your cortisol.
- 8:54So if you are someone who has been.
- 8:57Trying to be good or trying to eat low carb and you, you know, your thyroid isn't functioning.
- 9:02Great.
- 9:03And your adrenals are tapped.
- 9:05Maybe your weight, your, your efforts for weight loss have been impacting you more negatively than you think.
- 9:11So.
- 9:13This can not only.
- 9:15Feel your workout and make you feel great.
- 9:17It can also help manipulate that cortisol.
- 9:19So I recommend having some carbs naked as I like to call them.
- 9:24This is the only time I recommend having naked carbs because we want that glucose spike, because we want to use that energy right now.
- 9:33We want to use that energy right now to fill our fuel our workouts.
- 9:37We want to be lifting.
- 9:39With energy that we have put in our body.
- 9:40That's what we want to do.
- 9:41So I understand, and not everybody is a morning eater.
- 9:46I am, especially before a workout.
- 9:48And I know I am this way.
- 9:50I can't have anything heavy.
- 9:52This is where I see people going a little wrong because they're really following the like Perrier carbs rule, which I love.
- 9:58But they're doing it in the morning before a workout and they're having, um, some toast with peanut butter.
- 10:03Or maybe a banana with peanut butter.
- 10:05That is excellent to do.
- 10:06If you're doing it in the middle of the day as a snack, and you don't need that blood sugar spike.
- 10:10But this is going to kind of cause you to have a stomach ache during your workout because that fat is slowing the absorption and slowing down the digestion.
- 10:19And that's not what we want before.
- 10:20We're getting to work out in.
- 10:21So, this is where I would recommend having some dried fruit, maybe a banana.
- 10:26Maybe some toast, a rice cake, applesauce, packets, fruit snack.
- 10:31I know mom's out there.
- 10:32If you will always have those applesauce, squeeze packets in your house.
- 10:36I know this for a fact.
- 10:37I use one of those.
- 10:39I also like, um, The little that's it bars I'll pick those up from Costco.
- 10:44If I'm working out at the gym, I'll make sure to keep, just keep a giant bag in my car.
- 10:48That way I always have something as a pre-workout snack.
- 10:51Whatever it is.
- 10:53Do it.
- 10:54Dates are great too.
- 10:56So Mingo, whatever it is.
- 10:58Have some naked carbs and then really.
- 11:02Note.
- 11:04How your workouts feel, because this is going to fuel your body, your workout so much better than coffee.
- 11:10Maybe you won't feel like so mentally turned on at first, but you're physically going to feel so much stronger.
- 11:18And then the great thing is.
- 11:19You were going to be able to enjoy your coffee.
- 11:22Post-workout at a time where your quarters all is just naturally lower and you're going to be able to get the full effects of caffeine.
- 11:29We've talked about that as well.
- 11:30So try that out.
- 11:33Next scenario, I'm going to make this quick.
- 11:36Pre-workout, I will always stand by the fact that if you feel too tired at the end of your day to get a workout in, you are under eating.
- 11:48For your needs that day bottom line, if you were feeling tired and you were feeling sluggish and you were just like, it's more than like a hum mentally like, oh gosh, judges don't want to go to the gym, but I guess I'll go.
- 11:57If it's more of like a.
- 11:59I feel like I'm going to have to drag myself in there and I'm just going to be a slug the whole time.
- 12:03Your body is telling you.
- 12:05I am exhausted.
- 12:07I need more energy.
- 12:08I don't have enough.
- 12:09So if this is you really take a look at your breakfast, take a look at your lunch.
- 12:14Have you been skipping out on carbs all day?
- 12:16Have you been under eating just period.
- 12:18All macronutrients all day.
- 12:20What is it?
- 12:21Reaching for.
- 12:24The pre-workout.
- 12:25Is really just going to attacks your adrenals again, we're going to be.
- 12:29You know, focusing on this kind of cortisol to carry us through this false sense of energy, this false sense of fuel.
- 12:38It is not working for you.
- 12:40So.
- 12:41Increase.
- 12:43Your food throughout the day.
- 12:45And also rule of thumb if it's been, you know, three, four, or even more, which it shouldn't, but if it's been more than.
- 12:53Three to four hours since you've had your last meal, you need a snack.
- 12:57And so you can kind of manipulate this to be like, okay.
- 13:01I'm going to have my lunch at this time.
- 13:04I know I'm going to work out at this time.
- 13:05So I need to bring a snack to have in the car after work on the way to the gym or to have readily available at home while I'm getting dressed into my workout clothes before I had a workout, whatever it is, the reason I see people struggle with this is they are so fixated on.
- 13:20Oh, my gosh.
- 13:21I have to have proper timing between meals.
- 13:23And if I have a snack that's like too close to dinner.
- 13:28I there's no way I can eat dinner.
- 13:30After having a snack.
- 13:32Stop thinking about it.
- 13:33And again, start thinking about.
- 13:36Fueling your workout.
- 13:39You're going to be using that energy.
- 13:42And.
- 13:43You're going to have a good, like, here's the thing.
- 13:46When you properly fuel your workouts and you're able to get in a good workout, your body is going to be craving that recovery food.
- 13:55I guarantee you, you are going to be ready for dinner.
- 13:58And you should and have a dinner.
- 14:00That's full of some protein, definitely containing some carbohydrates, especially if you lifted, because we want to replenish those glycogen stores.
- 14:08It actually does work out really well.
- 14:10So get out of your head a little bit with the timing.
- 14:12It doesn't need to be perfect.
- 14:13What you need to be thinking about is how does my body need to be supported today?
- 14:17Your body doesn't give a crap.
- 14:20I'm not going to cuss because I don't think we cost on those podcasts.
- 14:23Your body doesn't give a crap.
- 14:25What time it is, your body cares about what you were, what you were asking it to do.
- 14:31And if you want to get the most out of your workouts, which you should, because working out is a lot of work.
- 14:35You want to make sure you are fueling properly and then recovering properly to get the most benefits.
- 14:42Or else you're kind of just spinning your wheels and really you're working too hard and not reaping the full benefit.
- 14:49So.
- 14:50Feel your workouts.
- 14:51Again, the pre-workout snacks that I said to happen for breakfast.
- 14:55You can absolutely have those before your workout.
- 14:59Now I'm not going to get too.
- 15:00Nitty-gritty on the amount of carbs that you need.
- 15:03The timing of the carbs.
- 15:05I feel like that's getting into the weeds a little bit.
- 15:08Just now.
- 15:10If you have a couple of pieces of dried fruit, or you have a banana or whatever, that's pretty adequate for what you're doing, unless you're doing like some really intense powerlifting.
- 15:20Maybe you need more, but you were going to be able to judge this.
- 15:22Okay.
- 15:23So.
- 15:24Go into your workout.
- 15:26Hat like fuel it and then see where you able to do your full workout today.
- 15:31Were you able to go through your workout before feeling like you're crashing and burning or hangry?
- 15:36And I don't know.
- 15:37Have you increased your weights?
- 15:40In the last few weeks, because if you're still using the same weights that you've been doing for the last, you know, Couple months or even year.
- 15:47I, I see women who are using the same weights of debuts for five years.
- 15:51You are not fueling properly enough to lift more weight and gain strength.
- 15:58That is the point of it.
- 15:59So.
- 16:00Stop relying on coffee.
- 16:02Stop.
- 16:02Relying on pre-workout.
- 16:04Give your body, what it needs, energy.
- 16:07The only way you're going to do that is food.
- 16:10I know that we like have this misconception because they're like, oh, coffee wakes me up or pre-workout really gets me going and energizes me.
- 16:17It's not actually energizing you.
- 16:19It's a false sense of energy.
- 16:20And then you feel kind of crappy after.
- 16:22Let's be honest, coming down from pre-workout or too much coffee.
- 16:27Phil's really cruddy.
- 16:29And I think we're just conditioned to be like, oh gosh, that must have meant that I had a good workout today.
- 16:35No, it probably means that you're under fueled.
- 16:38So.
- 16:39I again, get the most bang for your buck.
- 16:41Feel your workouts.
- 16:43Uh, just what you need daily off of what you're asking your body to do, and really think about everything that goes into it.
- 16:50What's going on with my cortisol right now.
- 16:52What's going on with my blood sugar right now.
- 16:54What's what am I asking my body?
- 16:56What am I about to go do?
- 16:57When I work my muscles, what is that doing?
- 16:59What is that?
- 17:00Depleting?
- 17:00How do I refuel it?
- 17:02All of those things, because it is.
- 17:04There's so many moving pieces.
- 17:06And once you really understand each individual piece, you're able to come up with a plan.
- 17:12Daily that's really.
- 17:15Meant for your specific body and needs and what you're doing for that day.
- 17:18So.
- 17:20Hopefully this was helpful.
- 17:22Um, I feel like a Bailey was not here to reign me in.
- 17:26We kind of like bounce off of each other to make sure that we don't go too long, but that is all I have for you make sure that you tune in next week, we have a really exciting episode.
- 17:36Um, On different hormones that impact weight loss, and maybe not in a way that you typically think of.
- 17:46So.
- 17:47I'll leave that there.
- 17:49All right, that's it for now guys.
- 17:51Bye.
