- 0:01Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts of the
- 0:03Soulfully in brand. I'm here to dish out all things
- 0:07about traditional Chinese medicine, yin yoga, reflexology.
- 0:12And of course, I'm here to disrupt your mind.
- 0:16So thanks so much for pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:20Let's do this. We talk about this heat.
- 0:26I mean, honestly, I love it. But there was a time in my life
- 0:30where the kind of heat that we're experiencing, well, at
- 0:34least here in most of the Northern Hemisphere, was just
- 0:39not doable for me. Like I suffered so much with the
- 0:45heat, exhaustion, rage, lack of sleep, you name it.
- 0:56Like lack of appetite, everything came with the heat.
- 1:01But now, thanks to some beautiful techniques, including
- 1:07yin yoga, which I'm going to talk about today, I'm now like
- 1:13totally OK with the heat. I mean, I do have AC and I love
- 1:16to sleep with AC. And it's actually, you know, far
- 1:19more beneficial to sleep in a cool environment than it is in a
- 1:22hot. But on a day-to-day basis, I
- 1:26love to just be out in the heat. Now, of course, sunscreen and
- 1:32all, for sure. So let's talk about today about
- 1:36how yin yoga can cool you down, and in more ways than one.
- 1:42Because right away, most people assume when I say, well, yin
- 1:47yoga can help you cool your down, they're like, well, yeah,
- 1:50like you're barely moving and you're low to the ground.
- 1:53So of course, like you're not exerting a lot of physical
- 1:56energy. So yeah, you wouldn't generate a
- 1:58lot of heat. But here's the thing, I've been
- 2:03in some yin yoga poses where I've actually generated a shit
- 2:08ton of heat in my body and it came out on my skin.
- 2:13It came out in my breath, it came out in my eyes, it came out
- 2:18in my liver for sure. But let me tell you, I've had
- 2:21some heated practices. So yen yoga can help you cool
- 2:27down physically, but it can also help you cool down mentally and
- 2:32emotionally. And that's kind of more of what
- 2:35I want to talk about because most of us think on a physical
- 2:38level. Well, yeah, if I'm low to the
- 2:40ground and I'm not really moving and I'm sitting there or I'm
- 2:43laying in a pose and my eyes are closed and I'm breathing and I'm
- 2:46in the moment, like of course my, you know, I'm going to feel
- 2:51cool. But you can also feel pretty
- 2:54heated in those moments too. But what really strikes a chord
- 3:00with me right now is because I'm seeing a lot of patients in my
- 3:03reflexology practice and even some of my students in my live
- 3:07stream classes are commenting like this heat is, is a lot for
- 3:12me. Like I find like I'm flying off
- 3:15the handle a lot sooner and like, you know, the irritation
- 3:19and the frustration over the smallest little things is
- 3:23happening, whereas, you know, that never used to happen
- 3:25before. And I'm like, well, it's, it's
- 3:29an overload of heat. But sometimes the heat is coming
- 3:34from our liver. I mean, if we know that the
- 3:36liver organ system as a whole on a Western approach is all about
- 3:43right detoxification. So we all know it's the major
- 3:46detox organ has over, you know, 600 functions that it does every
- 3:50single day. And then above and beyond that,
- 3:53maybe some other stuff that's happening, especially if you're
- 3:55not in good health. So your liver takes a huge hit
- 4:00all the time. And I mean, in any given moment,
- 4:02you could put your hand on your liver and it'll feel hot.
- 4:07Why? Because it's doing something,
- 4:10it's, it's filtering something, whether it's something we put in
- 4:15our body, whether it's something we put on our skin, maybe it's
- 4:19something we're absorbing from, you know, the world outside.
- 4:24Like even like mentally and emotionally, the thoughts that
- 4:28we have, it's all processed through the liver.
- 4:31Like that organ is always doing something.
- 4:36So it should never feel cold, but sometimes it could feel like
- 4:40it's almost burning. And it can also feel sometimes
- 4:46really tired. This is why we call, you know,
- 4:49that term sluggish liver because sometimes it's just like it's
- 4:53trying to do what it's meant to do, but it's having a hard time
- 4:56doing it. And I really want to emphasize
- 5:02just the connection between our thoughts, our emotions that get
- 5:09produced as a result of those thoughts and how that impacts
- 5:14our liver. Because at the end of the day,
- 5:16at the end of all of that, what ends up happening is your
- 5:20reality. What shows up in your life is a
- 5:23mirror of what you've been thinking, feeling, and the
- 5:28emotions that have been associated.
- 5:30And sometimes when we're overheated physically because
- 5:37of, you know, a lot of heat, which is happening right now,
- 5:39especially in the Northern hemisphere, we have, you know,
- 5:42really volatile weather conditions.
- 5:45And, you know, some days it's like 35 without even the humidx,
- 5:49and then other days it's like, you know, 15.
- 5:51And when you layer on the humidity, and especially
- 5:55depending on where you live, like I live in Ottawa, so we're
- 5:59in kind of a valley. And so we really absorb the
- 6:04humidity a lot. So it's not just the heat, but
- 6:08it's the humidity that slows us down.
- 6:10And it causes the liver to have to function even harder, right?
- 6:14And most of us, sadly, this still astonishes me to this day.
- 6:20But most people are still chronically dehydrated.
- 6:24They don't drink enough water. Like I will see patients on my
- 6:28massage table like five days a week.
- 6:31And I'm working on their feet and a reflexology treatment.
- 6:34And I'm like, have you had any water today?
- 6:36And they're like, yeah, I had like half a glass.
- 6:38And I'm like, and it's like 2:30 in the afternoon.
- 6:42And I'm like, you're dehydrated. And they're like, really?
- 6:45And I'm like, can you not tell? But here's the thing, like when
- 6:50you don't drink enough water, you get dehydrated.
- 6:54This just starts to become your normal state of being.
- 6:57And you don't know any different, but your liver is
- 7:00having to work harder. And let's not make it work
- 7:03harder by dehydrating ourselves, putting crappy processed foods
- 7:09into our body and also crappy, and I'm going to say processed
- 7:15thoughts in our mind. You know, the ones that, you
- 7:18know, like self sabotaging thoughts, the ones where, you
- 7:22know, we don't think we're good enough, we're not worthy, we're
- 7:27not deserving. You know, everybody hates me, no
- 7:31one loves me. I hate the world.
- 7:34Like all of these really negative, toxic thoughts that
- 7:39we, you know, put in our own mind.
- 7:41But then the ones that we also pick up from other people,
- 7:45whether it's family, friends, social media, the news, like
- 7:51let's not even go there talking about the news, how toxic that
- 7:55is for your liver. But you see, all of this has a
- 7:58compound ripple effect. And when your liver is having to
- 8:03work a lot harder than it should be.
- 8:06Here's the thing, and this is in Chinese medicine, in Western
- 8:09medicine, they won't, they won't agree with this statement.
- 8:11But in TCM and traditional Chinese medicine, The thing is,
- 8:17is that your liver is filtering your thoughts.
- 8:23The liver loves like an easy going disposition, you know,
- 8:27like go with the flow kind of mentality.
- 8:30So anytime we create resistance and especially resistance with
- 8:35our thoughts or resistance that we pick up from other people or,
- 8:41you know, the environment around us or the world, the liver has
- 8:46to filter that too. And so instead of 600 functions,
- 8:52it's probably going like close to like 700.
- 8:54I don't know, I don't know the exact number here, but let's
- 8:57just say it's doing a lot more than it's supposed to be.
- 9:01And what I have found in my yen practice, which is really cool
- 9:05because for me, the physical stretch is just a given.
- 9:09I mean, I say that all the time, like it's part of the practice.
- 9:12I know it's there and I know if my hips are super, super tight,
- 9:18I will often make the correlation of like, OK, my hips
- 9:23are like a little bit tighter than they usually are today.
- 9:28What kind of thoughts have I been thinking?
- 9:30Because the liver Meridian channel runs through the inside
- 9:37of the legs and the gallbladder Meridian channel, it's paired
- 9:40organ runs through the outside of the legs and they're
- 9:43connected, right? Gallbladder and liver, they work
- 9:45together and they all, you know that Meridian, those Meridian
- 9:50channels move up through the body, through the hips.
- 9:55So when my hips are super, super tight, unless I, I was doing
- 10:00something like a really hardcore physical exercise, then of
- 10:04course I know my hips are tight because you know what?
- 10:06I just worked out. But say I haven't been working
- 10:10out a lot, but my hips all of a sudden are super tight.
- 10:14I haven't been sitting for like 15 hours a day.
- 10:18So I'm like what's up? And then I know it's my
- 10:23thoughts. And I can tell you because I
- 10:26have such acute emotional awareness, emotional
- 10:32intelligence, I can tap in in literally a hot 2nd where I'm at
- 10:40emotionally. And I know that if I'm on the
- 10:45emotional scale at a lower level, like around anger, for
- 10:49example, then you know what? I know that that is having an
- 10:56effect on my physical body. I know it's having an effect on
- 11:00my mental health. I know it's having an effect
- 11:02obviously emotionally because I'm angry or if it's irritation
- 11:06or frustration, but then I know that that is going to ripple
- 11:09down into my liver and eventually that is going to
- 11:13create some imbalance or some dis ease in that organ because
- 11:18it's all connected. It's all connected in in TCM, we
- 11:22don't separate the physical from the mental and the emotional.
- 11:28So in my, in practice, this is where I really focus less so on
- 11:35the stretch and I focus more on cultivating emotional
- 11:40intelligence. Where am I at?
- 11:44Where am I vibrating at? Because essentially whatever
- 11:47I'm, whatever emotions I'm experiencing, I'm vibrating out
- 11:50at. And that's what the universe is
- 11:52picking up. And then that's what I'm getting
- 11:54back as a mirror to me. So if I'm angry, that means I'm
- 12:00vibrating out of frequency and energy of anger, which means I'm
- 12:04going to attract back to me similar experiences that are
- 12:08just going to make me more angry.
- 12:10Like that's how the universe works.
- 12:12It's just a matchy matchy. And so if my liver, if I'm
- 12:18pissed off, then my liver is pissed off.
- 12:21And then the universe picks up an energy of oh, she's pissed
- 12:25off. Well, let me send her something
- 12:27else to piss her off. And the cycle goes round and
- 12:31around and around like you're spiraling.
- 12:34So the moment you're in the pause and the stillness of a
- 12:39pose, your mind is going to start to move.
- 12:46Thoughts are going to come in. This is just the natural nature
- 12:51of our mind. It's not meant to be quiet.
- 12:55It thinks. And if you can be properly
- 13:01propped up in a pose using your props so that your body is not
- 13:04so physically uncomfortable, then you can.
- 13:12And only then will you be able to tap into the emotions.
- 13:17And then the powerful part comes, the awareness kicks in
- 13:23and it's like, oh, do I? If I say I'm having a negative
- 13:28thought, I'm like, do I really want to continue to think that?
- 13:34Like, how is that going to serve me?
- 13:37And for me, it's even more than that.
- 13:39So if I, if I notice a negative thought coming up in my mind,
- 13:42I'll be like, OK, I'm noticing that.
- 13:46And let's face it, people, we're human.
- 13:48Nobody's up on a pedestal with 100% of the time pure thoughts.
- 13:54It's not possible. So I'm not lesser of a human
- 13:59because I get angry and I want to give you permission to accept
- 14:03that for yourself. It's also OK to be sad or to be
- 14:09worried or to be scared. These are, you know, emotions.
- 14:14In in my previous podcast episode, I talked about shame.
- 14:20Shame, you know, an embarrassment like those are
- 14:23hard ones to digest, but you know what, like we're going to
- 14:27experience and experience them and it's OK.
- 14:30It's just we don't want to build a house in that.
- 14:34That's not what we want our foundation to be.
- 14:38So when you can notice the thoughts and you say, OK, I
- 14:43realize I'm angry right now we're worried or whatever it is.
- 14:46How? And then the next question I
- 14:48asked myself is, well, how is that serving me being worried?
- 14:52Or how is that serving me being angry?
- 14:57And I'll look for responses. Sometimes I don't get the
- 14:59response right off the bat. It's something to contemplate.
- 15:03But then I take it a step further.
- 15:05And for me, it's like, well, how are these thoughts serving other
- 15:08people in my life? How are these thoughts serving
- 15:13my business, my clients, my students?
- 15:17And then I take it up a notch to the highest level and I'm like,
- 15:22how are these thoughts serving the world?
- 15:26Because I'll tell you, if I'm angry all the time, I'm not
- 15:31serving me. I'm not serving you.
- 15:33I'm not serving my students, I'm not serving my clients, I'm not
- 15:37serving my family, my friends, and I'm certainly not serving
- 15:43this world. And I'm here to serve myself,
- 15:51you and everyone. But I know I'm going to have
- 15:58lesser than vibrant thoughts and that's OK.
- 16:03And so I can move in my, in practice through these
- 16:06contemplative thoughts and sometimes the answers will come
- 16:11really clear. I will tell you now that I've
- 16:13been practicing this way for such a long time that I can
- 16:17literally shift my emotional state in like a hot second.
- 16:27I really can because I know that every time I'm either angry,
- 16:33worried, scared, doubtful, I know the ripple compound effect
- 16:40that that is sending out into this world.
- 16:43And it's not what I desire because I'm not just here to
- 16:46live my extraordinary life. I'm here to help you live your
- 16:52extraordinary life. So if I'm not vibing that you're
- 16:57not going to pick up that vibe. So it's a waste of my time and a
- 17:01waste of my energy, and it's even a waste of the universe
- 17:06because the universe is like, you know, I want to send her all
- 17:10the great things. Why is she down low?
- 17:14Move up the vibrational scale, girl.
- 17:17I got things to send you. Good things, fun things, amazing
- 17:22things, extraordinary things. I got you.
- 17:26But if you're going to sit down in the worry and the fear and
- 17:29the anger, all right, well, I'm going to give you back more of
- 17:32that. So I know and I am so committed
- 17:41to my own evolution and my own healing journey.
- 17:46And because I am at that point where I feel I am living my
- 17:52extraordinary life. Do I have everything that I
- 17:55desire? No, I'm still a work in
- 17:59progress. And that's the thing, we all
- 18:01are. But I will tell you that with
- 18:06yin yoga, I have certainly been able to cool down my emotions
- 18:10because for years, especially when I was in my marriage to an
- 18:15alcoholic, I mean, I didn't drink, but I felt like I was the
- 18:19alcoholic because I was just as angry all the time.
- 18:25And I tried to hide it, but it was hard.
- 18:28It even showed on my face, like my face was red all the time.
- 18:33People used to say to me, do you have rosacea?
- 18:35And I'm like, no. And they're like, well, why is
- 18:37your skin so red? And why is it so hot all the
- 18:41time? Well, it's because you know
- 18:44what? I was pissed off and my liver
- 18:47was pissed off. And although I was doing yen at
- 18:51the time, I didn't have the emotional intelligence, the
- 18:57emotional awareness, the resilience that I have now.
- 19:02And, you know, you don't know until you know, And I always say
- 19:06too, that we only ever do the best that we can with the tools
- 19:10that we have in the moment. So, and I talked a lot about
- 19:15that in my previous episode where I talked about shame, all
- 19:18the things that I was, you know, ashamed of and embarrassed of.
- 19:22Well, I was only operating with what I knew at the time.
- 19:27And you know what? We all are.
- 19:30So is there any point to be carrying around all of this
- 19:34heaviness? Because regardless of whether
- 19:39it's sadness, worry or fear or whatever, your liver still
- 19:43filters that. Even though its primary emotion
- 19:47in TCM is anger, it still has to filter everything, all your
- 19:54emotions. So the practice of yen, it's so
- 19:59much more powerful than the physical stretch.
- 20:03Think of it as a stretch for your mind and what you're
- 20:09capable of shifting with it. Because I'll tell you, anything
- 20:14and everything is possible when you get still, when you pause,
- 20:20when you tune inward. And the more you do it, the more
- 20:27you cultivate and develop this emotional awareness that leads
- 20:31you to living an extraordinary life and being able to handle
- 20:39this heat. Because I'll tell you, if your
- 20:41liver hasn't doesn't have to work so hard, you're going to be
- 20:46a lot cooler. You're not going to be so
- 20:50irritated, You're not going to be so overheated, physically,
- 20:55mentally, emotionally. So do yourself a favor, get on
