- 0:00Welcome to Not All Business, a podcast by two former CEO's who
- 0:04went from competitors to friends.
- 0:06I'm Blakely Graham and my Co host is Heather Cooper and we're
- 0:10joined in person by our producer, Clay Kunal.
- 0:13That's right, in person. It's our first in person show.
- 0:17Clay is real. I'm real.
- 0:20He's real. And Blakely's studio is real.
- 0:24I'm so excited to be here with you.
- 0:26It is different. Soft.
- 0:27She's very soft. That is only something you could
- 0:30say on an in person episode, I know.
- 0:32It's very exciting, right? And odd.
- 0:35It's odd. It's a little odd.
- 0:36It's OK, I came out, I touched your arm and you must use hand
- 0:39lotion. I do.
- 0:40Do you like my teleprompter? I do Rob so.
- 0:43Carry that around your house and like.
- 0:45I actually have five of these five different colors, one for
- 0:49each person in the house. This is where I keep their To Do
- 0:52List. All right, I'm going to get
- 0:54straight to it guys. Today we're talking about
- 0:56building culture, but not the fluffy feel good version.
- 1:00We're getting into the practical, uncomfortable, dirty
- 1:03work that actually makes cultures stick.
- 1:14All right, we're back. This is our first in person ever
- 1:18recording and because of that, we have invited our guest early
- 1:22into the studio to chat with Heather and I.
- 1:25So I'm going to go right off the bat and introduce her.
- 1:27Her name is Nicole Christensen. She is the founder and driving
- 1:32force behind CrossFit Roots in Boulder, Co Nicole is a
- 1:35recognized leader in the global CrossFit community who started
- 1:38her coaching career in the Northern Virginia Swim League.
- 1:42Work to make coaching her profession.
- 1:45You can find her on the shop floor daily working with youth
- 1:47through to youth. Thank goodness I have a
- 1:50teleprompter. She works with youth through to
- 1:53adult athletes from beginner to elite.
- 1:57But this is where I need to take it personal.
- 1:58Full disclosure, I've actually known Nicole for years.
- 2:02Our son was her ring bearer. I knew her when she made the
- 2:07leap from corporate to opening up a gym.
- 2:09I watched her build something remarkable at a time where she
- 2:13would present it to multiple her business plan to multiple people
- 2:17who shot her down, rejected it, said it wasn't going to work,
- 2:20and she really went on to build one of the top performing
- 2:24CrossFit gyms in the country, if not the world.
- 2:27I wonder. We'll ask her.
- 2:30This was all happening during my second pregnancy with Lula, and
- 2:34Nicole asked me. So yeah, she asked me when I was
- 2:37ready if she could help me rebuild my fitness and like kind
- 2:41of take me through postpartum and recovery through my
- 2:44C-section. So I showed up to her gym.
- 2:48This is just weeks after she opened it and it was week 6
- 2:52after my surgery. My daughter is now 16 and I'm
- 2:56still at her gym. So when Nicole talks about
- 2:59building culture that lasts, I've lived it.
- 3:01And that's exactly what we're here to discuss.
- 3:04So Nicole, welcome to not all Business.
- 3:06Thank you. Wow.
- 3:06We're so. Excited.
- 3:07I'm here. This is way better in person.
- 3:10Oh, right. I wouldn't if I was like on the
- 3:12computer, like I'm I'm happy to be here.
- 3:14I agree. I am so excited about the
- 3:17potential of this and so much that this is my first episode
- 3:21where I'm going to take off my glasses and I put my
- 3:24teleprompter away, which also has on my questions for Nicole.
- 3:27So we're going to wing it, but I think it might be fun since
- 3:32there are so many like gym Fiasco's and you know, we're gym
- 3:37rats. I guess I don't know that we
- 3:39should maybe just start the episode.
- 3:41Let's just talk about gym disasters and I have one that I
- 3:46would like to bring up and I. Have likely he's going to kick
- 3:50us off. I, no, why have like, I like
- 3:54probably 20. Well, we've already talked about
- 3:57the one that I'm going to bring up on the show before.
- 4:00I'm going to retell this story because I think it's important
- 4:02for Noble to care. Agreed.
- 4:04You know what I'm talking about. I do.
- 4:06Yeah. So Heather and I, we're still
- 4:09brand new. We're, like, still dating.
- 4:10In fact, if we count how many times we've been in person
- 4:12together, this might only be like 5. 4.
- 4:17Four, it's easy. That's why I was surprised by
- 4:19how soft your hands are. I never touched them.
- 4:22Again again, so good. Sorry.
- 4:26I went up to her house for a photo shoot right.
- 4:28So we that's right yeah, photo shoot and I was telling her
- 4:32about like our push up challenge like we do, you know, 20 push
- 4:35ups every day at at the house and I don't even remember how it
- 4:40came up. I think I was it's telling you
- 4:42how, oh, what you should do is start bench pressing.
- 4:45She's like, oh, I've got a tonal in my room.
- 4:48Do you know what a tonal is? It's like an on the wall system.
- 4:52Got it. Yeah.
- 4:53Yeah, she's like, oh, here, show me how to press or something.
- 4:58You were. 'Cause I can't do a push off OK,
- 5:01so that's where we're starting. We can fix that.
- 5:03Thank you. Well, that's what she said
- 5:06anyway. And so she.
- 5:10Said and we're off. If you want to do a full push
- 5:15up, yeah, I can do a knees push up.
- 5:18OK, I'm not calling the girls push up anymore.
- 5:20We could doing a way with that language, but on my knees push
- 5:23up and I wanted to do a real one on my toes.
- 5:26And so then you said I had to bench press my weight.
- 5:29My weight, No, not my total weight.
- 5:30So here's what Scott, who's a physics nerd, he said.
- 5:33I don't know if I've ever told you this part.
- 5:35He goes get out of scale because I'm like, how much do I need to
- 5:38bench to be able to do a push up goes get out of scale and do
- 5:42like a plank on the scale. Oh, that's right.
- 5:44And the weight of that plank is going to be the strength that
- 5:49you need to have of your bench, right?
- 5:51So for me, I don't know. I would wait.
- 5:53I don't remember. I was like 100.
- 5:56I'm like kidding, it was like 150.
- 5:59And she's actually. Slipped it into conversation
- 6:01before I've. Had child I was.
- 6:03Like, so that's a that's a CrossFit thing because we do
- 6:06things like that would make most people at a regular gym just be
- 6:11appalled and it would be like so rude and like that's private.
- 6:13But like we do workouts where it's like use 75% of your body
- 6:17weight. So then or use your body weight.
- 6:19So then if you do it RX or if you do it as it's written on the
- 6:22board, then everybody knows your body weight, right?
- 6:24Yeah. So we just RIP the Band-Aid.
- 6:26Off you gotta RIP the Band-Aid. It doesn't matter.
- 6:28Like, we don't care about what you weigh.
- 6:29We care about like, yes, your muscles, your definition.
- 6:33Well, even the definition. No, Tell me.
- 6:36Yeah, we won't. We won't.
- 6:37We care more about what you can do with, with with your body.
- 6:39OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:40It's nice, right? Yeah, I like that you can do
- 6:44last, not your body. So many things.
- 6:46Well, it's judge. No, it's judgmental because if
- 6:49you if. You can't do a push up.
- 6:52We're gonna be like, we gotta work on that.
- 6:54So there's judging, but it's like supportive.
- 6:55Feeling it? Supportive judge.
- 6:57Supportive judge. Yes.
- 6:58All right. I like it.
- 6:59All I know is I struggled with a push up for the last 15 years
- 7:05and I've been going to the gym for 15 years and I'm like, OK,
- 7:07what is the block? What do I need to get out of
- 7:10this block? And so Scott's like whatever,
- 7:11weigh yourself. And it was like 90 lbs with like
- 7:14the full Chrome of the physics. And so I'm like, that is what
- 7:18I'm going to do. And so I started benching every
- 7:20single week and I started my one Rep Max is like 155 or 55.
- 7:25Shit, I'm sorry, 55. And then now I can bench almost
- 7:30the 90 that I needed. Yeah, so then I started being I
- 7:34all of a sudden I got my Bishop. So I was at Nicola, I was at
- 7:37Heathers house and she like took her tonal like one of those
- 7:41ironing boards on the wall. Yeah, bring down she break from
- 7:44the wall. She's like, okay, well show me
- 7:45the bench. And so I'm like okay, so I like
- 7:48laid down and she puts the tonal in my hand and then I don't know
- 7:54what happened. She's like ready on my shirt and
- 7:55it. I didn't realize it all the
- 7:57weight released already weighted.
- 8:01So bad. I thought I was turning it on,
- 8:04but it was already on. And so there's like a first
- 8:06button and then there's like, Are you ready to, you know,
- 8:08like? Wait, it has a computer?
- 8:10Yeah, yeah, but she turned off the spotter and so there was no.
- 8:15It was not the. Electronic Spotter.
- 8:17No, like literally the second time I met you in person, I
- 8:19almost killed you was bad and it was and then I obviously not a
- 8:22lot of help to like. No fetish.
- 8:24It's just like, it's, it's so good.
- 8:26It's like come up on the podcast multiple times.
- 8:28So sorry guys, for telling you the story so many times.
- 8:31Yeah. Anyway, but that was out there
- 8:33appropriate for Nicole. So do you.
- 8:35Are you on a push up plan then? I am now.
- 8:38Are you on a plan? Good.
- 8:39Good answer. I mean like.
- 8:40Yeah, right now. Right now, yeah.
- 8:43So I'll send you something. Thank you.
- 8:44It's very much different at the gym, right?
- 8:46Because in your classes, I mean, sometimes it's anywhere from
- 8:49like 15 people. There might be 3 classes running
- 8:51those 45 people. But you have this annual thing
- 8:55that CrossFit does where you have to step up onto a box, like
- 8:59a box that's 20 inches, 20 inches, 20 inches tall, 1000
- 9:05times. And that takes people like an
- 9:08hour or what takes me an hour. I know it's actually really hard
- 9:11with a weighted vest with a weighted vest.
- 9:14OK. So with the workouts called Chad
- 9:161000X, yeah. That's a butt thing and it's the
- 9:19step up is that the requires a butt strength.
- 9:22It there is butt strength involved for sure.
- 9:25It's more the, you know, the ability to do it.
- 9:29Balance, balance. Yep, we've got lots of things.
- 9:33Strength, balance. Yeah, some perseverance in there
- 9:36for sure. A. 1000 times.
- 9:37Yeah, it's a it's a workout that was it's an honor of Chad
- 9:41Wilkinson, who was a Navy SEAL who unfortunately took his own
- 9:45life. So that workout was a the
- 9:48fundraiser is a fundraiser and a product of his experience and,
- 9:52and things that he had done. And so it's a tribute workout in
- 9:55a lot of ways. Yeah, cool.
- 9:56And well, there's this sort of, you're just going into this
- 10:02place of 1000 step UPS. You're in one.
- 10:04You know what? You're in a 2 by 2 foot space
- 10:06for the entire time and you're stepping up.
- 10:09You're stepping up, so you the space I think you're talking
- 10:11about is like your internal like you get into.
- 10:13Your, your physical space and then your mental space are very
- 10:17right there. So this is like this is.
- 10:18Happening in one session. Yeah, it it took me.
- 10:21They don't let you out of 6D. 7 minutes.
- 10:24Yeah, I actually get everybody in there and then I just lock
- 10:27the door and then nobody's leaving until we are done.
- 10:33I think the I think we need to do a satellite episode.
- 10:37Yeah, with filming, Chad. No getting Heather to do.
- 10:42Good. You know well she already.
- 10:43Agreed to go pull dancing after our first episode.
- 10:46I did. Haven't done it yet though.
- 10:48Yeah, we'll do it. You should come.
- 10:49You should come with us. Yeah.
- 10:51Oh yeah. We will take Jenny.
- 10:53That's a coach. Oh, OK.
- 10:55Yeah, cool. She was a Dallas Cowboy
- 10:57cheerleader. Miami Dolphins, but.
- 10:59Wow, Oh my God, I'm. So sorry, Jenny.
- 11:03That's those are fighting words, Jenny.
- 11:05I'm so sorry. Yeah.
- 11:08This is amazing. You OK, Wait, back to my story.
- 11:11So the thing that CrossFit has taught me over the years is you
- 11:17just. It's you're really in
- 11:19competition with yourself. So there are people around you,
- 11:22you there is something where you're you're putting your
- 11:25scores on the board to, but it's more for accountability.
- 11:28You're really competing against yourself.
- 11:29So right, because it doesn't make sense to cheat.
- 11:33Like you're not winning anything at the gym.
- 11:35You are trying to like build your own whatever strength
- 11:38fitness anyway. There's probably, what, 50
- 11:41people stepping up onto a box? Makes me really proud.
- 11:44That you just said that like that.
- 11:46Well it took me a long time to get it, but I really hate it now
- 11:50when people cheat the system. And how can you even cheat?
- 11:53Everyone can see. I wouldn't tell you this guy.
- 11:57So it takes me 67 minutes to do this workout.
- 12:00I had to go to a space to get there.
- 12:02The. Thousands.
- 12:03You could do that in 67. Minutes and 67.
- 12:05I think she you can do what, 20 minutes?
- 12:09But she's not. Human.
- 12:10I mean, she's what are you doing at like an hour?
- 12:12She's special, but you're wearing like 100 LB vest or
- 12:15something, 35 anyway, there's this guy next to me step, he
- 12:20comes in, he doesn't warm up and he just starts walking on the
- 12:22box and like getting all his reps in and it's like he's so
- 12:27competitive. And there's the standard where
- 12:30you have to step into the top of the box and you have to extend
- 12:33your hips fully for the Rep to count.
- 12:36Otherwise, you're like, you can stay hunched on a box forever
- 12:39and you know, you have to like, extend your hips and he didn't
- 12:44extend Jack. Shit, did you call him out on
- 12:46it? Well, I just.
- 12:47Stared at him the whole time. I was so pissed because he got
- 12:49done in like 45 minutes. I think he's a little.
- 12:51Fucker. Like that's just seriously good
- 12:53that you can contain yourself. Like I'm actually a really.
- 12:56It's funny you bring this up looking.
- 12:57At him like this. No rap, no rap.
- 13:03I think that would have been good, but you think I would have
- 13:05did say something. Well, if you well, and that's
- 13:08part of it to a coach. Though not to.
- 13:09Have that's OK, but that's I mean that's kind of what we're
- 13:11going to talk about is once culture goes from owner to
- 13:16coaches, then you know you're doing it well when athletes are
- 13:20doing it amongst each other or passing things back up the chain
- 13:24that they see. Yeah, I it's interesting you
- 13:27handle yourself well. I don't.
- 13:29When I drop into other gyms, I'm not always the best visitor and
- 13:34so. Really.
- 13:36Like do you call people out at other?
- 13:37Gyms, well, this is embarrassing, but it did happen
- 13:40and we've laughed about it multiple times.
- 13:42I was at AI, dropped into a gym and very obvious, very obvious
- 13:48that the person next to me was I would do my last Rep and then
- 13:53they would just do one more and they would move on.
- 13:55And just like as a coach. So they weren't counting their
- 13:58like you did 10 and. They and they were doing the
- 14:00same thing. Exactly.
- 14:02And as a coach, also you, you, you know, when someone's
- 14:05cheating, it's, it's very obvious.
- 14:08It's like the 6th. It starts as a sixth sense.
- 14:10And then you start to validate it by just counting the reps
- 14:14You're like, oh, what I'm seeing is actually what's happening.
- 14:18So yeah, I had an outburst with the person, with the person.
- 14:22I was like. Not your client, just the.
- 14:24Yeah, it just said another, it doesn't matter.
- 14:26Whatever. Yeah, every time it was like a
- 14:28five round work. It was like the fourth round and
- 14:31I I get up to do the burbie and this guy gets up and I turn.
- 14:34I was like, you got to be fucking kidding me.
- 14:36And I was like, oh, I oh, OK, but I get it.
- 14:40It's Oh my God. There is an interesting thing.
- 14:42It is. It is interesting because you
- 14:43are there for yourself and but there is also this this sort of
- 14:50shared experience of we're all, we're all in that place where
- 14:54we're not going to cheat. We're all in that place where,
- 14:56yeah, this is there's going to be a part where it's it's super
- 14:58challenging and we and and yes, it would be easier to cheat, but
- 15:03we're not doing that and that and collectively we're all in
- 15:04that mindset. And so when someone's not there,
- 15:08yeah, I I I used to think of it as like, oh, just you, you'd
- 15:11read different things like, oh, just don't worry about it.
- 15:13Like, you know, it's, you're there for yourself.
- 15:15And I I don't buy. That no, it actually takes away.
- 15:17It does. The thing is, I don't need to
- 15:20beat him at all. I'm not going to.
- 15:22He's way fitter than me. I know that.
- 15:24Like it's just more I want him to put in the same sweat, sweat
- 15:28equity as I did. How What if?
- 15:31What if the prescriptive workout is above their level?
- 15:35Yeah, we most, most of the things that we we program are we
- 15:39right at the gym are going to be on a daily basis above anywhere
- 15:45from 50 to 80% of the gym's ability for all those movements.
- 15:50And I think that the well, so then the next step there is that
- 15:53everything is scaled to the athletes current ability level
- 15:58we have. It's kind of the Montessori of
- 16:02Montessori, the Montessori of fitness.
- 16:03Wow. But I'm glad we're having this
- 16:05conversation because I've always wondered.
- 16:07I mean, CrossFit has such a reputation.
- 16:10Totally the fittest of the fittest.
- 16:12And that you'll get injured. Well, the two reputations
- 16:16finished. And if you like walk in the gym,
- 16:17you'll get injured. But you, well, I mean, I did see
- 16:19a woman like trying to like carry a tire on her back down
- 16:22the road the other day. And I was like, yeah, that's not
- 16:25going to end well. I doubt that was CrossFit.
- 16:26It might. Have that tires were like 2009.
- 16:29They've they've lost CrossFit. That's some other gym.
- 16:32Tires were 2000 tires. I love it, but there is that
- 16:37like I, I think it would be, well, here's the deal.
- 16:41I've definitely been in gyms, like especially right after the
- 16:43kids were born. And then I was a runner for a
- 16:45while and then it was the whole thing.
- 16:47But I never went near the weight stations because I was so
- 16:52embarrassed. I was so intimidated at that
- 16:55time, could not afford a trainer to like walk me around and show
- 16:58me how it works. And so I would try it because I
- 17:00heard, well, weight is a big part of it, but there was just
- 17:04such a massive intimidation factor for someone just starting
- 17:08out because you guys look so cool.
- 17:10You're all friends. You know what you're doing.
- 17:13And even if you're not friends, it feels like you're friends
- 17:15because you're like helping each other load the weights or
- 17:17whatever. But it's like this club that is
- 17:19impenetrable for someone who is like, I can't even go make a
- 17:22friend because I'm going to be embarrassed that I can't do.
- 17:24But hold up that that. Comes from a stereotype from
- 17:29from the gym class. No, I'm talking about when we
- 17:32are in middle school and presidential fitness and
- 17:35whatever you've already got, they're already separating the
- 17:38boys and the girls and they're putting the boys in the weight
- 17:41room and they are not putting the girls in the weight room.
- 17:43That's changed. That's.
- 17:44Changed and that's probably one of our my prouder things that
- 17:48I'm seeing unfold is like our middle school program, like not
- 17:53a single one of those girls is going to go to their high school
- 17:55weight room and be like, I don't know what to do or I don't feel
- 17:58confident here. They're going to be.
- 18:00I mean, they're going to be showing some people up in like,
- 18:03you know, two or three years when they get to high school and
- 18:05not about like, you know, not showing them up on purpose.
- 18:09But it's like that barrier that you experience where you just
- 18:12never got the tools to learn it right.
- 18:15It's just like, it's like anything like if you grow up
- 18:17skiing, like you don't think twice.
- 18:18You're like, I'm a skier. That's what I do.
- 18:19Like it's not something you had to learn, you were just
- 18:22indoctrinated because that's what you did.
- 18:24Yes. It's the same thing with whites
- 18:25for, you know, an eighth grader, 6th grade girl.
- 18:28I never. Thought about that because we
- 18:30were just taught how to do leg lifts, like lay on your side and
- 18:33like lay that. Suzanne Summers.
- 18:37Yeah, standing like spider firm. Master, you're.
- 18:41Right, Master. But that's like when I talk
- 18:43about like blow drying my hair and still doing like the squats
- 18:46and like still from 6th grade I learned.
- 18:49You know what also is teaching girls to be way more proud of
- 18:53their bodies too, which I've noticed in my daughter she is.
- 18:56She just takes a lot of pride in her strength, a lot of pride,
- 19:01and she takes a lot of pride in her muscles.
- 19:03And she does not believe in the Kate Moss, you know, framework
- 19:09that we were raised in. Like that Kate Moss is
- 19:12beautiful. And Kate, you're beautiful and
- 19:14you look malnourished. So you know what I mean?
- 19:17Like it was tough. It is tough.
- 19:19It was tough. And we still hear it from older
- 19:22women. I mean, like going to the
- 19:24college, that weight room and there was like a weightless for
- 19:27the elliptical. And yeah.
- 19:29And but I think it's I'd to also like one of my goals with all of
- 19:35our middle school kids is that they can do a pull up by the
- 19:37time they go into high school program.
- 19:39Because if they can do a pull up now it's backing up that like, I
- 19:42am proud of my muscles. I am proud of being strong and
- 19:45look what I can do. Yeah.
- 19:47And that whole trajectory I think is I don't, I don't know
- 19:51all the insurance and outs of what it's going to do.
- 19:53You know, my kids are kind of my test, test they are.
- 19:58That's. Good, but I love the empowerment
- 20:00because we just got, like you said, the presidential fitness
- 20:03thing. You know, that's like a core
- 20:04trauma thing for me. My try being called up.
- 20:06Everyone in the gym class was waiting and then we had to in
- 20:08for the girls. The flex hang, Yeah, the arm
- 20:10hang. That's.
- 20:11What it was called flex arm? Yes.
- 20:13When they would hold you, you'd be on a ladder, so you start out
- 20:16in the right spot. And you had five.
- 20:17Seconds And immediately they pulled it away.
- 20:20Think about what you just said, yeah.
- 20:22Never been trained. Never been trained.
- 20:23So that's the problem. That's the problem is, is that,
- 20:27you know, you can look back to there's this great old article
- 20:29from JFK in the 50s where he talks about like how our fitness
- 20:32was failing at that point in time, right?
- 20:35And it's not. And you know, Jocko wrote this
- 20:37great book for kids that my kids love.
- 20:39And it's the, the the main character is a boy and he he
- 20:43can't do a pull up. So it's it's not just girls.
- 20:46It's not just boys at this point.
- 20:47It's like we have taken so much of just physical empowerment out
- 20:51of the things that kids do that unless we give them a way to
- 20:55learn it. Yeah, it's completely
- 20:57unreasonable. Like, take, take that any other
- 20:59thing. Like you're going to go and be
- 21:01tested on something that you've never been trained on.
- 21:03Yeah, Right. And it's actually interesting
- 21:05because a lot of, I mean, PE is like a lot of games.
- 21:09And then the presidential fitness test comes up and it's
- 21:11like, well, now we're going to see how strong you are.
- 21:14Never have I ever like hung out a bar in my life before that
- 21:17test. And you know how many people, I
- 21:20think you know many people that come to the gym, if I had a
- 21:25dollar for every time someone starts at the gym and they're
- 21:27like, they all see blankly doing a pull up and they're like, Oh,
- 21:30I, I can't do that. I'm like, oh, you will be able
- 21:32to. They're like, no, I, I, I tried
- 21:35in, in middle school or in, you know, elementary, I was just
- 21:37never able to do the pull up. Like, OK, again, like when you
- 21:41see the training and you see and you're around all these other
- 21:44people that you see them get the first pull up and like, how long
- 21:46you been doing this? I've been doing it for a year
- 21:48and a half. OK, cool.
- 21:49Right. Yeah.
- 21:50So is CrossFit, is there room for beginners that CrossFit too?
- 21:54We. Dispel the rumors.
- 21:56Yeah, exactly. To spell the.
- 21:57Rumors. We thrive with beginners.
- 21:59I would say nice. Because there's just more room
- 22:01to there's. Grow.
- 22:03There's. So much more room to grow.
- 22:05And it is a pretty big shift over time of coming in.
- 22:10And initially people are drawn toward, I know they've made it
- 22:13when it's like they're initially drawn toward the stuff where
- 22:16you're breathing hard and perception in your head.
- 22:18You're like, I'm burning calories and all that stuff to
- 22:19them being like, hey, I shifted my work schedule around so I
- 22:22could come to deadlift today. And you're like, OK, we got you.
- 22:25Yeah. Well, I think we should.
- 22:30I think we should switch gears and like actually get to what we
- 22:33want to talk to you about because I know you have, I know
- 22:38you have a little thing with like the capital L word
- 22:41leadership, but and we can get to your little L capital thing
- 22:45leadership. But that's good.
- 22:47But you are one of the best leaders I have ever met.
- 22:51And I think the way it is demonstrated, the way you,
- 22:58you're, you're in front of the house leader, but you're also a
- 23:01back of the house leader, if that makes sense.
- 23:03And I think it's like the back of the house stuff that we would
- 23:06love to hear from you today because I know you're super
- 23:08passionate about it. But how have you created the
- 23:11culture that you've created at Roots?
- 23:14That is, it's a CrossFit culture, but I would say it is
- 23:19also a very aspirational CrossFit culture because we do
- 23:24all feel included there and but we also feel very challenged and
- 23:30supported and there is a lot of parenting that happens at
- 23:36CrossFit roots. Parenting.
- 23:38Yeah, yeah. Adult parenting.
- 23:39Adult Parenting. Tell me about.
- 23:41That I know it makes you feel really, I've been adult parented
- 23:44over the years and. I love that phrase.
- 23:47Steal that. Yeah, because.
- 23:50All of these habits you've had as an adult that were formed
- 23:55when you were a kid, Nicole, pretty much makes you unlearn
- 23:58them and retrain how you show up at the gym, but really
- 24:04ultimately how you're showing up in the world.
- 24:06And I think that's going to be the important message.
- 24:08And so I've heard you speak on this before, so I want you to
- 24:12walk it through our listeners today.
- 24:15Well, it started because people would walk into the gym and they
- 24:19wouldn't really be able to explain it.
- 24:21Like why your community was so amazing?
- 24:23Yeah. Or they would go and they would
- 24:24go somewhere else and they would come back and be like, oh man,
- 24:26I, I never realized or I picked up on this.
- 24:30And you hear that a lot, which, and it's nice to hear, but I
- 24:33don't think I'd ever really thought much about it.
- 24:35And it wasn't until what, a couple months ago, I was asked
- 24:40to speak at a conference about building culture.
- 24:43And even that phrase just makes me want to gag because I
- 24:46building culture sounds so inauthentic.
- 24:48Like it it sounds like the the goal is culture rather than just
- 24:53like doing the right thing. And then that produces a good
- 24:55culture. I just I hate the.
- 24:56Phrase values on a way now the performative like mission but.
- 25:02We're going to change the world. And so, but when I really sat
- 25:09down, I was like, oh, there are things that, that, that, that
- 25:14make for this to happen, but I would be lying if I ever I sat
- 25:20down and what was I like? I think I was 26 when I opened
- 25:22the gym. I, I definitely was not like,
- 25:25oh, here's how I'm going to build culture.
- 25:29And so in walking it back is really when I started to say
- 25:33like, oh, there is a process. There is things that we're doing
- 25:36intentionally. I just, I didn't intentionally
- 25:40do them because I made some lists I guess.
- 25:42Yeah, but now it's a list. Now she has her top five
- 25:45framework for building a good culture.
- 25:48So everyone is looking for an advantage in their marketing
- 25:54that they can digest in a clear, fun format.
- 25:58Well, there's one podcast I want to tell you about that's
- 26:00changing the game. It's called Your Audience is
- 26:03Waiting and it's for business leaders who are done with
- 26:06surface level marketing advice. Hosted by visibility and content
- 26:10strategist Alicia Everett. This isn't a show about posting
- 26:14more content. It's about aligning your
- 26:16visibility strategy with actual business goals and revenue.
- 26:20Alicia helps CEOs, founders and Ready to scale business owners
- 26:25build strategic visibility ecosystems that position you as
- 26:28the authority in your space and convert attention into
- 26:32customers. Real frameworks, real ROI Clay,
- 26:36that's return on investment. So if you're leading a business
- 26:40and you want to grow, go subscribe to your Audiences
- 26:43Waiting wherever you listen to podcasts.
- 26:50Oh man. Well, so yeah, so it starts the
- 26:51first piece is you have to define your standards or you
- 26:54have to define, define what you're doing.
- 26:56And so in the CrossFit space for us that boil down to the
- 27:00methodology, to the etiquette and then to the do's and the
- 27:02don'ts. And so and you have to write it
- 27:06down. And I think this step, yes, this
- 27:08could be this isn't the proof you vision on the wall.
- 27:11This is defining your methodology.
- 27:14So in CrossFit, it could be the methodology has already been
- 27:16defined for us, but you have to know it and you have to be able
- 27:19to regurgitate it and, and, and be able to connect concepts as
- 27:24you, as you work through the methodology so that you're
- 27:27always really grounded. It's kind of like, you know,
- 27:30when people get the brand stuff where it's like everything has
- 27:32to go through our brand and you know, whatever we say has to
- 27:35filter through these values. It's kind of like that, but it's
- 27:38your, it's your foundation. And then on the etiquette side,
- 27:42this is probably, oops, I hit my mic.
- 27:44I know this is probably what Blakely was talking about in
- 27:47the, in the world that we live in, we had, we're, we're a human
- 27:52interaction business, which is rarer.
- 27:55We're brick and mortar. We, we don't do things online.
- 27:59But the etiquette pieces, you know, you've got all these
- 28:01different people coming from different backgrounds with, with
- 28:04different perceptions, different norms.
- 28:07And it, it's just the, the rules that you're going to play by by
- 28:11being around other human beings. And the way I think of etiquette
- 28:14is that it's, it would transfer out of a gym.
- 28:16Some of ours when you look at our list like yes they are
- 28:18specific to being in a gym, but some of them, a very simple one,
- 28:21is beyond time. Just have to be on time.
- 28:24Come to class. But on time thing I'd be so
- 28:26fucked I'd be immediately. You would get better.
- 28:29I would. You would get better, and this
- 28:31is what's interesting. I think I would get.
- 28:33Better everyone, everyone's like whenever I talk on this, I was
- 28:35like, but like, do people really show up on time?
- 28:37And I'm like, yes, that's what they do and.
- 28:39Until they don't and we have to watch the the coach give these
- 28:43like really awkward conversations in front of the
- 28:44class. It just happened the other day.
- 28:46Do they get kicked out? They do.
- 28:48They don't get kicked out, they don't get they are not let
- 28:51they're not able to take the class.
- 28:53Now let's OK, we're we're skipping ahead.
- 28:55There's different. OK, sorry, bull.
- 28:56No, we're skipping ahead in a because we also have to teach it
- 29:00and we have to get to that point before we have a consequence, if
- 29:03you will. This sounds like a ton of this
- 29:05is not but but back up. OK, so the etiquette piece, like
- 29:09many people, I thought about this the other day.
- 29:12You could right now, in today's world, you could get in your
- 29:14car. You can listen to whatever you
- 29:17want. You can drive to Target, You can
- 29:19shop with your headphones on, listening to whatever you want,
- 29:21navigating through the world around people, but making no eye
- 29:24contact with another human being, get whatever you need.
- 29:27You could then choose to stand in the self checkout line.
- 29:31You could go and you could take your time checking your phone on
- 29:34your e-mail and then scanning some things and bagging it
- 29:36exactly as you want. And then you could go home and
- 29:39you would never have to interact with another human being.
- 29:42Yeah, and that's becoming, it's weird, but it's it's more common
- 29:47than we think. Yeah.
- 29:48And and so. I wonder if that's why I like
- 29:51self checkout. Because I talk to people.
- 29:54I'm like, out of practice. And I don't like self checkout,
- 29:57neither does. Scott and that makes a lot of
- 30:00I'm pointing like him. You did it I.
- 30:02Did it? Yeah, Self check out.
- 30:06Well, I know why I like it. I like to hit the buttons.
- 30:08So no, that's not my but. Yeah, right.
- 30:10I don't like. OK, so there.
- 30:12I love. Seeing a cashier, it was my
- 30:13favorite job. Did you?
- 30:15Have the toy at Christmas. Yes, yes, scanner that comes up
- 30:19in my therapy like. Your cashier toy.
- 30:21Well, my therapist, I, I always bring my therapist into these
- 30:24conversations, but she asked me to think of like, like physical
- 30:28sensations that bring me pleasure.
- 30:30And my number one was pressing the buttons on an old fashioned
- 30:34cash register. And then when I got older, it
- 30:36was a 10 key. I was the fastest 10 key like.
- 30:40Yeah. With your left hand.
- 30:42No, actually my right, but I'm going to hit the microphone.
- 30:44So that was like a clay adjustment.
- 30:46Left hand. All right.
- 30:49Yeah. Anyway, I'm sorry.
- 30:50Yeah. No human.
- 30:51Action. No human interaction.
- 30:52So now I run a brick and mortar business where people are forced
- 30:55to be together on a daily basis. It's awkward a lot there.
- 30:59We we, we gather at the whiteboard to start.
- 31:01We have eye contact. I'm always looking around like
- 31:04is there anyone who will be my partner right?
- 31:06There's that. You gather at the whiteboard.
- 31:08We. Gather like where the workout
- 31:10is, no the whole class like we come together.
- 31:12Oh, you start from scratch on the whiteboard.
- 31:14Here's what we're doing today, OK?
- 31:16We don't do a screen, We write. We write with our hands.
- 31:18OK. And so, but etiquette thing has
- 31:22become more and more important because we don't you, you said
- 31:26this, we don't practice it. We don't practice a lot of these
- 31:30things. It doesn't matter if you're
- 31:31late, if, if you have to self check yourself into the doctor's
- 31:35appointment with the kiosk. And then, you know, there's all
- 31:38these instances where we, we don't have to do those things.
- 31:42And so we're, we're out of practice.
- 31:44And then it's not, I mean, humans are self-centered human
- 31:46beings. Unless we're really forced to
- 31:50remind ourselves that we're not special, then it's easy for it
- 31:56to just kind of run amok. And now you've got 300 people
- 31:58coming in and using a space that we all want to care about each
- 32:01other and do the right thing. But you got to operate from from
- 32:04some level of a parameter that says like.
- 32:06This is how we treat each. Other this is no different than
- 32:09being in a meeting and you got Joe Schmo coming in 5 minutes
- 32:11late. And yes, you have to restart the
- 32:14meeting every time you recap. It's just a total flippin waste.
- 32:18Heather, I'm looking at you. You have this guilty look on
- 32:21your face and you need to be adult parented and re parented.
- 32:25Into but you're. Constantly.
- 32:26I'm always just 5 minutes late but.
- 32:28Think about the just. First of all, the fact that.
- 32:31You're putting the word there, then there's that.
- 32:32You're not special. And that's the whole thing is
- 32:34like, right. Like being late is one of those
- 32:37things where it's like everybody and I know that people are going
- 32:41to be like, Oh, well, we hear a lot, you know, such a hard and
- 32:46fast rule. Like it's not that we don't have
- 32:47compassion, right? If somebody comes in that's
- 32:50always on time and they're like, hey, this happened.
- 32:52We're not going to be like, oh, you can't take class.
- 32:54But that initial shift of, hey, I'm part of something.
- 32:58I want to be part of something. I want a higher level of fitness
- 33:00than what I've had for the my whole life.
- 33:03There are some baseline levels of just how that's going to
- 33:07happen or not happen. And I think so that's the
- 33:10etiquette part. OK, so.
- 33:12You said something so interesting to me.
- 33:14You said it's become socially acceptable or you said something
- 33:19like that, which I think is so interesting.
- 33:20So you're just like, OK, as a society and you would describe
- 33:23the day that someone walked through.
- 33:25We're accepting of that. It's almost like, well, they
- 33:28didn't make eye contact because they were on their phone, as if
- 33:30that's OK. Like we understand.
- 33:31So we're lowering the bar of what's expected.
- 33:34Think about that. So now you, you get up in the
- 33:38morning, you do your thing, you drop your kids off in your car,
- 33:40you listen to your thing, you go home, you work from home, you're
- 33:43doing your own time, your own schedule, your own everything.
- 33:46Now the brick and mortar is like, it's my, it's like one of
- 33:50my favorite things is that like our humans come together in so
- 33:54many different ways when they walk in the gym and we can't
- 33:57play by those rules, right? We got to play by the brick and
- 33:59mortar rules. And so that's the etiquette
- 34:01piece. And then the do's and don'ts,
- 34:02which kind of round out like you got to define your standards is
- 34:07there are unspoken rules. And I use the word rule lightly,
- 34:13uncertain, unspoken ways that we do things that lend to the
- 34:17experience. That's more coming from the
- 34:19coaches of what they're doing behind the scenes, like you
- 34:21said, that you can't quite put your finger on it.
- 34:25But when when you go somewhere else or they're not happening,
- 34:28you notice it. And those things drive either
- 34:32the social connection or they drive better performance, They
- 34:35drive longevity. They drive somebody jumping
- 34:39front on a 2 inch plate to now jumping on a 20 inch box rather
- 34:44than just going to a step up and saying like, I'm never going to
- 34:46be able to jump. And so that's that's the first
- 34:50piece you have to define your standards.
- 34:52So try like, what? What is it kindness?
- 34:55Is it cleanliness? Is IT support?
- 34:58Like what? What do you think those things
- 34:59are that they're doing? On the do's and don'ts so.
- 35:04Behind the scenes, yeah. Some of them are like the
- 35:07coaches encourage people when somebody's done picking up all
- 35:10of their stuff, you go and you, we, the coaches will be like,
- 35:13Hey, if you've cleaned up all your stuff from the deadlift, go
- 35:15ahead and help somebody else out, right?
- 35:18Like it's just, it's just lending it for now.
- 35:21Now somebody went and helped somebody else, that person that
- 35:23it was their first time doing a deadlift and they were super
- 35:25uncomfortable. Like you were talking about,
- 35:27right? And not knowing.
- 35:28And now you guys just start talking And then that person's
- 35:30like, Hey, you did a really good job.
- 35:31The first time I came in, I only deadlifted 35 lbs And you're
- 35:34like, oh, they were like me too. They just deadlifted 250 lbs.
- 35:37And it's not, it's again, it's, it's just all the things that I
- 35:44think we, we aspire to doing. Caring for each other.
- 35:47Yes, without it being formulaic or shoved down your throat.
- 35:53And so there's a big difference between me like hey, guys on the
- 35:56wall. We have written that we help
- 35:58each other pick up our barbells versus the coaches knowing as
- 36:02part of their practice that they're just like every once in
- 36:04a while they're going to pick one of the do's and don'ts off
- 36:06the back of the the door and they're going to say, hey guys,
- 36:09when you're cleaning up, if you're done cleaning up, just go
- 36:11ahead and help somebody else and then we'll go meet at the
- 36:13whiteboard. It's just a.
- 36:14Like a more thoughtful way to like institute your values, Like
- 36:19we have core values in corporate for a reason, right?
- 36:22Do we always go through and define them as do's and don'ts?
- 36:26This is what it looks like. This is what it doesn't look
- 36:27like. And I think the most powerful
- 36:31ways you see that implemented in like corporate space is when
- 36:35your values are almost in every operational part of your
- 36:38business. So like when you hire, you
- 36:41should only be hiring like to that those are your dues.
- 36:44When you fire, what did they break?
- 36:46Did they know those values? You know?
- 36:48So there are ways you can. I think this is really super
- 36:51applicable. It's just getting them from off
- 36:55the wall, which I had them on the wall to guys, I admit it.
- 36:58Onto a clipboard. But so that's but to your point
- 37:01there of like if those if those do's and don'ts can use them to
- 37:05hire or fire, but then you have to teach them.
- 37:07So that's the second one is once you've defined your standards,
- 37:12yeah, then you have to teach them.
- 37:13And so I think this part sometimes gets missed where if
- 37:20your expectation is that people squat below parallel or they
- 37:24jump on a box or they, you know, show up on time, you do have to
- 37:29take the step to teach the why behind it.
- 37:32And so you can't have this expectation of like, well, I
- 37:35wrote it down. Human beings have to hear these
- 37:39things multiple times and they have to feel that they were,
- 37:44there was some semblance of being taught or referenced back
- 37:48to like, oh, I've seen this happen.
- 37:50What I'm doing is different, right?
- 37:52And teaching is a big one. Teaching is a big one, and I
- 37:56think we get caught in this trap a lot.
- 38:00There's a reason why we're managers or there's a reason why
- 38:03we're promoted or a reason why we're leaders.
- 38:06And it's because we have a certain bar or level of
- 38:09perfectionism on. We are high performers.
- 38:13And so we're already like hitting those high standards.
- 38:17And then we have employees come in or, you know, or people were
- 38:20training up and we just make these assumptions that they're
- 38:22going to meet our bar. And I think about this, even
- 38:25with my kids, my kids don't meet my bar of expectations.
- 38:29And then they get in trouble, you know, or I might put someone
- 38:32on a pip clay. Performance improvement.
- 38:36Plan good job you're not on one today.
- 38:37Nice and I've never I realized it took me my my business coach
- 38:44telling me like have you ever sat down and to find your
- 38:47conditions of satisfaction like do they know what your
- 38:50conditions of satisfaction are? And I'm like.
- 38:52And so now and think about that in a gym environment, right?
- 38:54Like you might come in and have never been there.
- 38:57You're intimidated, you're like, Oh my God, everybody left so
- 38:59much. And your perception might be
- 39:03that OK. They, they, the coaches want to
- 39:06see me like sweat like a lot and try really hard and like do the
- 39:11whole thing that's written on the board.
- 39:14Well, our conditions of satisfaction are that we, we
- 39:18help you scale appropriately and you work hard within the
- 39:21parameter of, you know what we, what we define is like good for
- 39:25your experience at that moment and you try hard within that.
- 39:29That's what we care about. And safety, like sometimes you
- 39:33bring us down and that, but we. Don't we're not sitting there
- 39:35being like, oh, they're only lifting this much, they should
- 39:37be lifting more. And and so there is.
- 39:39Well, you do that too. Well, that's, that's different,
- 39:42that's further down the road, but but yeah.
- 39:46But. Initially, well, it's like I'm
- 39:49going to get back for all. Of these wires me to communicate
- 39:52so I need to be vulnerable so if I'm going to show up, you do
- 39:55have to. And I stand there and I'm you
- 39:58know, worried about what I wore and did I wear the right thing
- 40:01and I'm kind of vulnerable standing there in the group when
- 40:03you're on the white board and then I see you say, OK, we're
- 40:06going to start out with 10 push ups.
- 40:08Am I tapping a coach on the shoulder and being like, I can't
- 40:12do that? Like is there like an
- 40:14accommodation and they're like to pay one for you or?
- 40:18Hula went in after her surgery, knee surgery, one or two, and
- 40:23there was accommodations for everything, right?
- 40:24That's. What I should do?
- 40:25I should wear a knee brace. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:27That would be helpful. Oh.
- 40:29My gosh, put an elbow brace on a knee brace, come on in and we'll
- 40:31take care of you. Neck brace.
- 40:33No, but OK. But to your point though, like
- 40:36that's where the teaching part of the physical stuff on the
- 40:39there's the physical side. So when you come in, we're going
- 40:41to do a number of sessions together and my job, I actually
- 40:45heard this, somebody said this, that the, a person coming into a
- 40:50CrossFit gym, their main goal, I can't remember who said this is,
- 40:54is they just don't want to look stupid.
- 40:56Yes, that's, that's been a really good guide.
- 41:00That's been a really good guide for me when I'm thinking about
- 41:02like what we teach somebody when they come in for a foundations
- 41:05course and they, it's like, OK, I'm, I'm going to give you all
- 41:07the tools so that, yes, you feel comfortable exactly.
- 41:11But you don't feel like you're doing something that's so out of
- 41:14sorts from everybody else. But that's the teaching part and
- 41:18you got to teach it so many different places.
- 41:19And this is the part that like, you know, you got to write, you
- 41:22got to have it on your website, you got to send it to people,
- 41:24but half people don't read. So then you got to reinforce it
- 41:26with how you mold the experience of the class and little gentle
- 41:31reminders that then are like, Oh, that's not a reminder.
- 41:33That's the first time they've heard this.
- 41:34So I got to go teach it to them. And but you, you have to teach
- 41:38it. And I think sometimes we define
- 41:41these things and it's like, well, it's up on the board.
- 41:42That's like just what we do. And it's like.
- 41:45That must be so hard for you, I. It's like giving someone a
- 41:47textbooks, right? And just being like, well, I
- 41:50gave you the textbook. Yeah, it's like, no, now you,
- 41:52now I need the lecture, now I need to do the teaching part.
- 41:55Yeah, but just think that you have to show up not only once a
- 41:59day, but like 10 times a day. Or getting to that part.
- 42:02OK, I won't steal that. No, because that's the next one.
- 42:04OK, good. So then once you've taught it,
- 42:07you have to have all these hard conversations.
- 42:10And I think this is the part where it's like, this is the
- 42:12rubber meets the road, right? Because I've coached, I don't
- 42:19know what's this? You're 17, so.
- 42:21Well, it was 16, so yeah. It makes sense.
- 42:24We'll be 17. Yeah.
- 42:24OK. So I've had probably 10,000
- 42:27conversations of why you can't be late.
- 42:30Wow. I've probably explained it and
- 42:32every time you have to come stable and be like, hey, so da,
- 42:36da, da, like this is how it's going to, you know, go.
- 42:38And we really are glad you're here and, and, and that hard
- 42:43conversation, it's so easy to just be like, I don't want to
- 42:47deal with this today, right? And every single time.
- 42:49And I think that's really that's the rubber mates the road and
- 42:51that's where culture slips. 'Cause every time on Slack if
- 42:55you have a standard. And this is where don't apply,
- 42:58right? And this is where like keeps me
- 42:59up at night where I'm like, oh, Nicole, you're too like I'm not
- 43:02OCDII wouldn't use that word. It's you're too committed to
- 43:05these standards and like it's just a small business and like
- 43:07it doesn't really matter that much.
- 43:09And like you're not like some corporate.
- 43:10It's like some corporate thing. We're not trying to change the
- 43:12world. How many times can we get that
- 43:16idea? But it does matter.
- 43:19And, and how how it matters is rooted in this like caring for
- 43:24other people. And sometimes that's the hard
- 43:26conversation. It doesn't always come out right
- 43:30the first time. And sometimes you have to then
- 43:32have a follow up hard conversation.
- 43:34And over the years, obviously it's I've gotten better at it.
- 43:38But then you've got to also make sure that your coaches feel
- 43:41supported, that they can go have the hard conversation.
- 43:44Because it's one thing for you to have the hard conversation
- 43:47you work through. It doesn't always go perfectly,
- 43:49but you have to somehow get to the point where having the
- 43:51conversation is more important than being perfect at it.
- 43:54Otherwise, the teams not going to feel like they can ever go
- 43:59out on a limb and do it. And then they get better at it.
- 44:02And now 17 years in, like rarely am I like, oh, I gotta pump
- 44:06myself up for this conversation because it's we've had it,
- 44:10right? And there's the practice part.
- 44:11Too. That part sounds scariest to me.
- 44:13Yeah. And it's scary initially if you
- 44:17think about what's at stake, that's.
- 44:20Yeah, the practice of the hard conversation, it's like you're
- 44:24Nicole's very talented at them, I mean.
- 44:27Because I have a lot of guilt. Yeah.
- 44:28Is it like a family conversation?
- 44:30No. I don't believe in shit
- 44:32sandwiches. Oh, let's talk about that.
- 44:34Wait, is that the one where you like?
- 44:35Give a comment, yeah. I hate those.
- 44:38So what's a tough conversation? So I just showed up the second
- 44:40time 10 minutes late. Are you?
- 44:42What are you saying to me? Yeah, Ish.
- 44:43OK, second time. After you've already we already.
- 44:48Talked to you. Hey, Heather, what's up?
- 44:52Nothing. So, like, I've just walked in.
- 44:55Yeah. OK.
- 44:56Not much. What's up with you?
- 44:57Yeah. How you doing?
- 44:58Hey, everybody. I got lattes for everybody.
- 45:02No, I I would show up and I'd be like.
- 45:03I know, I know, I know. I'm sorry.
- 45:05Sorry. Yeah.
- 45:06Hey, what happened? Are you OK?
- 45:08Yeah, I, I just bad time management this morning, but
- 45:10yeah, I I know better. OK, cool.
- 45:12So I know you're working on it. Yeah, this is your second time.
- 45:15Yeah, on the next one, what's gonna happen is I'll give you
- 45:17the workout, but you're not gonna be able to join class, OK?
- 45:20You have to do it on your own. OK?
- 45:21I know you can get here on time. Yeah, and everybody else can get
- 45:25here on time. And you're no different than
- 45:27everybody else. So that's good.
- 45:29Yeah, that's good. So you're totally capable.
- 45:31So we're going to work on it. Go get a barbell.
- 45:36She let you are good at that. She let you.
- 45:37In but OK. Are you saying this in front of
- 45:39the class by the way? I don't kind of, I mean, I'm not
- 45:43going to, yeah. I'm not going to be like that's
- 45:46like one of my pet peeves is like people be coaching someone
- 45:49like the whole group and they'll be like walking out, like OK and
- 45:51squat and hold. Hey, push your knees out, all
- 45:54right, guys and stand OK and spot and hold.
- 45:58It's a little lower. Like that one is creepy, but
- 46:02two, it's like that's that's another social norm, right?
- 46:05Like we're, we like, that's like a coach thing where like we
- 46:08don't do that like. You need to whisper.
- 46:11And well, yeah, because you don't make someone feel bad,
- 46:13right? Right.
- 46:13That's not coaching, right? Like coaching, you think you
- 46:17think you go to like a college level team and the coach needs
- 46:21to make a correction and they're just like, hey, come on, family.
- 46:23Yeah, OK, there's all the there's times for that.
- 46:26But like you have to like breaking through that barrier.
- 46:29Is is that Blakely gets told to squat lower.
- 46:33She's not embarrassed. Now, initially that person that
- 46:36comes the first time that happens, it's like, oh, but
- 46:38what's the coach doing? Here's your here's your do as
- 46:40and don't our coach that's coaching will make it a point
- 46:44that they're always going to coach the other coaches that are
- 46:47in the class. Oh, that's because it sets the
- 46:49example right of like you got a new person.
- 46:51They're like, oh, I got told to squat lower and then Oh yeah.
- 46:54Then they hear like, hey, Dave, drive your knees out a little
- 46:57bit more on the next one. Whatever.
- 46:59Yeah, yeah, they coach Nicole like I hear that your coach.
- 47:02That's not to say that. But then that's twofold, right?
- 47:05Like nobody's untouchable and everybody can get better.
- 47:08But also it. Desensitizes.
- 47:11Could we repeat that one? I said this a lot at work.
- 47:14Like every person is fireable. Fireable, I mean, including
- 47:20myself. Like I, I'm.
- 47:23Yeah, like you have to know that you are not special.
- 47:27You're not special. No, that's a replaceable mom is.
- 47:29I didn't. Ever use the word fireable?
- 47:31Everyone is replaceable. That replaceable though?
- 47:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I love how you see, so when
- 47:37you corrected me about the being late, what I felt from you was a
- 47:44genuine caring concern. First of all, like, are you OK?
- 47:47Like, let's get that out of the way.
- 47:49And then once it was clear that it was just my bad time
- 47:51management, you, you were kind but firm.
- 47:55And it made me want to please you.
- 47:57It made me want to be your friend.
- 47:58It made me want to be like, OK, I want Nicole to think well of
- 48:01me. And so it's not like you go, you
- 48:04need more friends. But you were just treating me
- 48:06like a human. And you weren't demeaning or you
- 48:09weren't like, you know the rules.
- 48:10You broke the rules. Out you go.
- 48:11Because then I'm walking out being like, fuck you and this
- 48:13jail, like, I, I don't need someone else telling me what to
- 48:16do. But it was out of a concern and
- 48:18a kindness. Well, and I think in the back of
- 48:19my head, I'm always like, we have to root for each other, no
- 48:22pun intended, right? But like there's a balance
- 48:26between like getting somebody to adhere to this environment so
- 48:32that they can be successful. Because I underline all of this
- 48:36is very few times have I ever, I mean, few times I've never seen
- 48:41somebody not be able to show up on time, try to jet out early
- 48:44because they're more important because they've got something to
- 48:46take care of, you know, not squat below parallel and cheat
- 48:51their reps and achieve the level of health and fitness that
- 48:55they're capable of. And so it's sort of these these
- 48:58baseline needs for success that you've got to lay the foundation
- 49:021st. And then we can then we can talk
- 49:04about elite fitness and Fortune elite fitness and things like
- 49:07that. But without those, you can't be
- 49:10successful. Yeah.
- 49:12And like that foundation of yeah, for the person, right?
- 49:16Like, I'm rooting for you. Yeah.
- 49:17I want you to show up. Yeah.
- 49:18Because I need you to see what you're capable of.
- 49:21Yep. And making that small little
- 49:23shift, then we'll transfer over to, oh, you made that shift.
- 49:28Well, now Nicole thinks I can do 5 pull ups.
- 49:30I don't think I can do five. I think I can only do 3.
- 49:32But, well, we're gonna try it, right?
- 49:33And you start to build the trust builds a lot of different ways.
- 49:37And I think that crosses, I mean, I, it's just reminding me
- 49:40when I was a second year associate at a firm in Detroit,
- 49:44I got put on a really big case and I was pretty intimidated by
- 49:47it. Yeah.
- 49:48And it was a late ish night with the team and we're kind of doing
- 49:52it. And they handed me this huge
- 49:54deposition that had to be read by the next morning.
- 49:57My gosh. But I wanted it because the
- 50:00senior attorney on it said, hey, I'm gonna trust you with this.
- 50:03Yeah, I believe in you. Or, like, I believe in you.
- 50:05And so even though I was intimidated, I stayed up till
- 50:082:00 in the morning. And if I didn't care about that
- 50:11leadership or impressing or rising to that level, I would
- 50:13have been like, this is just a job.
- 50:15I'm going home, let someone else do it, Right.
- 50:17But it was like that seed of I see greatness in you.
- 50:20Yeah. I see that you can do this.
- 50:22It made me want to achieve not only to get the accolade from
- 50:27the senior partner, but also just to myself, to almost prove
- 50:30it to myself. Yeah.
- 50:31And without that bar being set, I probably wouldn't have done
- 50:34it. Yeah.
- 50:35And I think we can all, I mean, we all have those like when you
- 50:38root for somebody, like when you truly just want their success, I
- 50:44do think it brings out the best, not just in that person, but in
- 50:48the best in you. Yeah.
- 50:50So. And.
- 50:50OK, so then four, I have to give credit to Blakely because she
- 50:54really helped me flush this out. And so, OK, so three, you've had
- 51:00the hard conversations, you're it's mundane, it's boring,
- 51:03you've had it like 1000 times over and over and over.
- 51:05But it's keeping what you wanted in line and, and moving forward.
- 51:10And then now you've got all these amazing people that you're
- 51:14rooting for and then you have to protect them.
- 51:17So 4 is protect your people, protect your people, protect
- 51:20your people. And I think this one is rooted
- 51:25in loyalty and rooting for other people and being proud of
- 51:29people's accomplishments. And then also just the right
- 51:34thing to do that you've you've got this culture and you've got
- 51:37this group of people. And at least in our space, so
- 51:42many people over the years have wanted access to our people.
- 51:46And this is where going back to defining your standards.
- 51:50Access to your people, meaning steal them to other gyms.
- 51:52No, no, no, no, they want to demo a product for them that,
- 51:56you know, we can have this table come in and here's here's a a
- 51:59supplement product or, or they want to sell to them or, you
- 52:03know, we'll give you, you know, we want to e-mail all of your
- 52:06members this this perk. We want to offer this type of
- 52:13class at your gym. It's not CrossFit.
- 52:16It's not CrossFit. But, but, but you know, we want
- 52:18to offer it at your gym. And, and, and it could also be
- 52:23just protecting people from from things in the space that are
- 52:27infringing on what you believe in.
- 52:28Donuts. Donuts.
- 52:30Yeah, Donuts. You tried to bring Donuts.
- 52:32I didn't, but someone else did. Oh.
- 52:34Boy. And think about in the past 17
- 52:37years, we went from like, we have a blog and we post our
- 52:40workout to now it's like we've got apps and we've got, you
- 52:43know, Instagram feeding you your algorithm of like, oh, you
- 52:46looked at creatine, so now you need all this other stuff and.
- 52:49Right. And and it's exhausting.
- 52:51Yeah. And so part of it is like by
- 52:53taking, we don't allow phones on the gym floor.
- 52:55Like you can't have your phone while you're doing class, right?
- 52:57All these different things, right?
- 53:01Yeah, No, you know, but it it it keeps us in this realm of like,
- 53:08these are the things that matter and move the needle.
- 53:11And this is fluff. When you've done CrossFit for so
- 53:15long and you've eaten meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some
- 53:18fruit, little starch, no sugar, kept your intake levels where
- 53:20you're like, fueling your performance.
- 53:22You're so confident. I'm sorry that it works.
- 53:26Fruits. Nuts.
- 53:27What was that? That what?
- 53:28What did you say? That down, it's our dietary
- 53:31prescription, but but you're just so confident that the noise
- 53:35is the noise, the noise passes by.
- 53:38And so I feel like the first eight years of CrossFit was
- 53:40like, I had to like, really like make sure that I tempered the
- 53:45noise and I went back to the methodology to like reinforce
- 53:47and say like, OK, let's filter this out.
- 53:49But that's empowering to people. And I think that's part of
- 53:52protecting your community is saying like, I'm trying to get
- 53:55you to this point because it's freeing you guys.
- 53:58It's super freeing. Nicole, you'd be so proud.
- 54:00Right before this show, what was I eating?
- 54:04The doughnut. Shit, big ass doughnut.
- 54:08I 02 doughnuts steak pies. I was taking, I was eating.
- 54:12Steak pies from Costco. No, these are made homemade.
- 54:17Are they, is that what you're calling it now?
- 54:19Stuff. It's her chef made it homemade.
- 54:23Made in the home. You did get out and.
- 54:25Just switch it comes to the home.
- 54:27And he makes. It not homemade in the.
- 54:29Comes to the home. But I needed a little extra fuel
- 54:31and I could have taken could have Christmas cookies or
- 54:37whatever and I ate stick bites to fuel they.
- 54:39Were good too. Thank you.
- 54:41Yeah. Thank you, Alex.
- 54:42Thank you, Alex 5 where are we at?
- 54:47He's like watching the clock. I just totally spaced.
- 54:51We were at Protect Your People Protect.
- 54:52Your people and then you have to be consistent.
- 54:54And so we talked about this like consistency is your credibility.
- 54:56Yeah, right. I, I was, I'm just, I'm reading
- 54:59a Mike Shashefsky's biography right now and I love it.
- 55:05And he has a part in there about, you know, not it's got to
- 55:08be fair, but not equal. And I, I think that that is
- 55:11consistency, right? And that's a hard line, but
- 55:17that's kind of where all the rules and the do's and the
- 55:19don'ts and stuff like that become humanized or, yes, you
- 55:23have to be consistent and then you also have to have empathy.
- 55:27But that consistency being your credibility, it's like you might
- 55:30not have handled things the same way every single time, but you
- 55:34did address and you handled them handled it every time.
- 55:38See kids, This is why I give you consequences.
- 55:41I have to be consistent assistant in my parenting.
- 55:43You do they you. But I believe in you.
- 55:46Yes, that sounds like you're talking to a six and a 8 year
- 55:48old, by the way. 16 and 18 is there a difference?
- 55:52Why? Do you insist that they watch
- 55:54and listen to this podcast? I do talk to them a lot.
- 55:59Well. They aren't listeners, are they?
- 56:02They're not on our target, I. See.
- 56:03No they're not. One day.
- 56:05One day. They're gonna go back.
- 56:08But that's it, There we go. Consistency, that's OK.
- 56:11That's really good. I love the, I love everything
- 56:13that you talked about so uniquely is applicable to the
- 56:18physical endeavor as well as the emotional endeavor inside and
- 56:23outside. It's amazing.
- 56:24It's beautiful. Wish I lived in Bolder.
- 56:28Well, you did. Since we're filming the next
- 56:30episode at the gym, this will be great for you to satellite up
- 56:33with the satellite episode. We're all the beginners out
- 56:35there. Let's just want to Heather out.
- 56:38I would. Heather gets a push up episode.
- 56:41Heather gets. A push up?
- 56:43Yes, let's do it, let's do it and do it that quick, huh?
- 56:45In 60 minutes. Well, I didn't.
- 56:47I didn't. Well.
- 56:48No, we need a the baseline. Yeah.
- 56:52If I came, I would be standing in the group all like energetic,
- 56:56and then I would immediately go behind and like erase on the
- 56:59whiteboard and change it from like 20 to 10.
- 57:02Allowed. That's not allowed.
- 57:03Which is the only people that could pick up dry race burgers.
- 57:05I would have such a hard. Time not a standard.
- 57:10Jeez. Could you wrap us up, Heather,
- 57:12please? My brain is spinning because
- 57:15we've covered so many things. So I'm going to try to remember
- 57:18from the beginning the five things.
- 57:20They're so critical in what I I said this one.
- 57:21So I'll say it again, the way that you have taken us from an
- 57:25internal growth perspective with these five things.
- 57:28And then as well you can apply it to your physical.
- 57:31I am motivated now to get on a push up plan.
- 57:35Yes. OK, so we're going to define my
- 57:37standards, right? And then I'm going to teach or
- 57:43you're going to teach. It's a process.
- 57:45It's a back and forth, right? Because if we define the
- 57:47standards we teach, then we have the hard conversations, the
- 57:51things that somebody doesn't want to hear.
- 57:53But we're going to do it in kindness, not in a shit
- 57:55sandwich. But we're going to be effective.
- 57:58We're going to be caring. We're going to treat each other
- 58:00with kindness and caring. And then we're going to protect
- 58:04our people. So if your people are there,
- 58:07they're sticking with you. You're being protected and got
- 58:10to trust that that's happening for you, which is beautiful.
- 58:13I love that one. And then consistency.
- 58:15It's all about consistency for all of those things, for all
- 58:19those things, for all those things.
- 58:20Thank you so much for being here, Nicole.
- 58:22I feel so inspired. We never even got into the
- 58:26corporate journey and like leaving that and like choosing
- 58:29like we really, truly do need to have you back.
- 58:32I know there's probably a whole other story there, but by you
- 58:34stepping out into your passion and bringing that kind of
- 58:37culture and community to the world, I can see how it's just
- 58:41flowing, even just from knowing Blakely and seeing what she's.
- 58:45Received through that. Stop making fun of me now.
- 58:47It makes things cross better. Never thought make fun of you.
- 58:50Let's be clear. So maybe about this, OK, maybe
- 58:53maybe about this because I see I.
- 58:54Get it? That's a win.
- 58:55No, I get it. I get it.
- 58:57So it's an honor. Thank you.
- 58:58Well, thanks for having me. Thanks for letting me be in
- 59:00person. It's exciting.
- 59:01Here it's hate, but we're not done.
- 59:03We're not done. So every, every episode we do
- 59:06ask a question of our guests and we do answer it ourselves.
- 59:08So the question is, what brought a smile to your face this week?
- 59:13What's your smile, Blakers? She hates it when I call.
- 59:15Her blakers. I do hate it.
- 59:17I taste it back. What's up?
- 59:19Don't stop now. That would be.
- 59:22Weird. Oh, you like it?
- 59:23You. Know I don't like that my smile
- 59:25of the week was yesterday I got like a knock on the door and I
- 59:33opened up the door and it was our producer Clay and I had this
- 59:37moment I'm like he's tall he is tall but it was also like do I
- 59:43hug him? Well, I know.
- 59:45I hug him, but I've never met him in person.
- 59:48I've been working with him for months and months and months.
- 59:50Does he have soft hands? But I've never asked the
- 59:52question. Like, no, I don't know.
- 59:54I didn't touch his hands, but I did hug him and it was awesome.
- 59:59And just being in person is the best is the best.
- 1:00:03I really need you guys to move here so.
- 1:00:05You can join the gym, yeah. And also join the gym.
- 1:00:09Just I wanna do this in person. OK, that's my smile of the week.
- 1:00:14Love it, Clay on the doorstep. What's yours being on Blakely's
- 1:00:17doorstep? I have several, SO obviously The
- 1:00:20thing is that I'm here in person meeting Blakely for the first
- 1:00:23time. Nicole, it's also really nice to
- 1:00:25meet you too, getting to show up at Heather's house one day and
- 1:00:30then the next day I show up at Blakely's.
- 1:00:32I've just been like the welcomed guest.
- 1:00:35Which house do you like better? I already know the answer to
- 1:00:38this because you, I know like you were like, it was all fun at
- 1:00:43Heather's and they're laughing and then you get to my house and
- 1:00:46it's like somber. We're pretty serious.
- 1:00:48OK, OK, OK, well, let me talk. OK, so because this is my
- 1:00:53experience, I would love to share.
- 1:00:55You're in a, you are in competition.
- 1:00:58OK, I'll share here. I'll do the most clay thing.
- 1:01:01I'll say what I think is the best thing about both of you and
- 1:01:04then let you fight about which one is actually the best.
- 1:01:07OK, the best thing about Heather's house right now is
- 1:01:10that she has a massage chair. And I sat in the massage chair
- 1:01:15and for 19 minutes. Chair in their house.
- 1:01:19Those are in The Sharper Image stores, only there's.
- 1:01:23A story I'm. Sorry, Clare, I'm sorry for. 19
- 1:01:27minutes. This chair did something to me
- 1:01:30that I thought only like a lover could.
- 1:01:35Do. That.
- 1:01:40Was so in the most you want to come sit in the chair I.
- 1:01:45Guarantee. I don't know how to.
- 1:01:47Explain it someone else has been using.
- 1:01:49It in the most non sexual way I felt connected to the chair.
- 1:01:56It's like the cuddling, you know?
- 1:01:57Like you felt loved by the, you felt loved by the chair cared
- 1:02:00for. OK, I think everyone just miss
- 1:02:02what Nicole just said. She just said it's like the
- 1:02:05cuddling. You know how you can go and get
- 1:02:08someone to cuddle? I.
- 1:02:09Don't remember where this was. You can like pay and go like
- 1:02:11just snuggle with. Yeah, cuddle parties.
- 1:02:13So I'm not going to do it, but I understand.
- 1:02:16I don't know. About the cuddle.
- 1:02:17Party heard it, Yeah. When someone I've well, I listen
- 1:02:21to a lot of podcasts. Yeah, professional development
- 1:02:24and people started talking about cuddle parties.
- 1:02:27I trust you that you got something out of it and you're
- 1:02:30like, you're into it. And that was cool, but I'm not
- 1:02:32going to do that. OK, well, what do you like at my
- 1:02:35house? OK, great.
- 1:02:37What I like at your. House.
- 1:02:39Is there a cuddle party? There's no cuddle party.
- 1:02:42Oh my God, dude. OK, let me say something, OK?
- 1:02:47It's better than a cuddle party, OK?
- 1:02:51Blakely has the most incredible bidet I.
- 1:02:56Don't have one. I have three, yeah.
- 1:03:02That's the worst decision we ever made as we got 1 and now my
- 1:03:06children walk past their bathroom.
- 1:03:10To. Come open our door.
- 1:03:12Open the bathroom door to go and use.
- 1:03:15By way of three. I'm so.
- 1:03:17Warm and inviting. Yeah.
- 1:03:18Did you love it? OK, well, so I have what I
- 1:03:21thought was a bidet at my house. OK, but it's one of the
- 1:03:23attachment ones that and this is like.
- 1:03:27Junior de Bidet. My life has been changed.
- 1:03:29We've. Really taken care of him, yes.
- 1:03:32Oh, actually, what he likes about our day had nothing to do
- 1:03:36with us or our families. It had to do with our
- 1:03:39electronics. I'm like.
- 1:03:41OK, well you it was. You shared that we had a nice
- 1:03:46moment. I felt very welcomed as a guest,
- 1:03:48but these are this is something that I feel very welcomed when
- 1:03:52someone has thought about. When people come to my house, I
- 1:03:54want them to experience these nice things.
- 1:03:56We. Got to get the Toto.
- 1:03:58We had a great conversation last night with Scott You.
- 1:04:02Eldon Lula was awesome. Play brought us some Detroit
- 1:04:05treats. I did.
- 1:04:08Really nice, yeah. What did I bring?
- 1:04:11He brought a Jack White vinyl, knowing that we're very music,
- 1:04:16and it was pressed at 3rd Man Records, Third Man Records.
- 1:04:20Thank you. And he brought me a, I was gonna
- 1:04:24say a Shinola. No, I have the Shinola, A
- 1:04:27Shinola candle that is just like it's gonna become the new scent
- 1:04:33of the studio and matches that were like Detroit historic
- 1:04:39buildings. And it actually just went into,
- 1:04:41like a really cool history of Detroit, which got totally
- 1:04:43geeked out on. It was really fun.
- 1:04:44It was a good dinner. It's a good conversation.
- 1:04:46Good conversation. Yeah.
- 1:04:48Good job. Nice.
- 1:04:50OK. So that was my smile.
- 1:04:53Yeah. Nicole, Heather.
- 1:04:55Mine was last night 5:00 and 6:00 PM class I just had.
- 1:04:59It was like a great 2 hour block.
- 1:05:02Nice. Were you?
- 1:05:03Yeah, I even said that to Eric when I got home.
- 1:05:04He was like, Oh yeah, I was coaching.
- 1:05:06Yeah, coaching. OK.
- 1:05:08I got home and Eric was like, how was class?
- 1:05:09I was like, it was awesome. Just one of those ones where
- 1:05:14everyone lifted great. The vibe was good.
- 1:05:18Your favorite word? The vibe.
- 1:05:20I have to use it like what is my daughter said that was a vibey
- 1:05:24workout. I was like, oh.
- 1:05:26Awesome. Vibey 6:00 PM.
- 1:05:27It was a vibey, vibey evening. How about you, Heather?
- 1:05:31Mine, I'm going to say, was on the way here because my son
- 1:05:33called. He lives in Summit County.
- 1:05:35He's just no border out there and cool.
- 1:05:37Yeah, he's great kid. Is there any snow?
- 1:05:40Very little, but they make it work.
- 1:05:42Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:05:43Not too much yet, unfortunately. But some of his dear friends are
- 1:05:48seniors at Colorado State University, and they are in film
- 1:05:51school there. And so they chose to do a
- 1:05:53documentary of his life as there are projects that will be
- 1:05:58released and everything. And so he called.
- 1:06:01He said they want to interview me.
- 1:06:03To be part of it, you say? I have my own microphone.
- 1:06:05Which is sweet. Yeah, I've got my I got the
- 1:06:07phone up. I got the lights.
- 1:06:08Just tell him to come to Boulder.
- 1:06:09Yeah, I got it. But it was here's the smile.
- 1:06:14He's very specific about the things to share or not share,
- 1:06:19right? Like, so mom, they're going to
- 1:06:20ask you about this and let's talk about this.
- 1:06:22I'm like, do you want me to say this?
- 1:06:23He's like, absolutely not. You do not say that.
- 1:06:25Like, OK, got it. And so it's so it's so sweet
- 1:06:28because he's got an intention with this.
- 1:06:30And he's letting them talk to me, which is a risk because he
- 1:06:36will not be there, right? And so he's giving me these
- 1:06:38guidelines. But at the end of the day, he
- 1:06:40trusts me. Yeah, I feel good.
- 1:06:42Yeah, it's going to be good. This it.
- 1:06:47Yeah, that's a wrap. Do you want to talk anymore
- 1:06:49about how we took care of your undercarriage while you were
- 1:06:52here? Can we just say thank you and
- 1:06:55have this conversation? Thank you.
- 1:06:59Thank you, Nicole. It was.
- 1:07:00Thank you.
