Transcript
- 0:00This princess puts 50s in each hand and does deadlifts and squats.
- 0:03So if this is what a Pilates princess looks like, then okay.
- 0:07This is your weekly girlfriend chat, the kind that we all crave, where we can show up exactly as we are, laugh until we cry, get honest about the things we're navigating,
- 0:17and all the private girl talk that we need more of.
- 0:20No pressure, no perfection, just real women like us sharing real stories with real connections.
- 0:27Over the years of Tonidab, I've learned that the most transformative moments don't always happen in a workout.
- 0:33They happen in those conversations before and after.
- 0:36when we realize we're all going through something, when we feel seen.
- 0:40And that's what Tone It Down is built on.
- 0:43My intention is simple, to help you tune back into yourself, to quiet the noise, and to remind you that you're allowed to evolve.
- 0:52This is Tone It Down.
- 0:58Welcome back to the Tone It Down podcast.
- 1:02I'm your girl Karina.
- 1:03So happy you're here.
- 1:04We took a little mini summer hiatus, but we're back.
- 1:09We're back and we're talking Pilates today.
- 1:11But before we get to the episode, could you pretty please click that subscribe button?
- 1:18However you listen to your podcast, that would be great.
- 1:22Awesome.
- 1:22Thank you.
- 1:23And also, don't forget, you can leave me a voicemail at karinadon.com slash message, and we can play it on the podcast and answer your questions and comments.
- 1:34So today, oh, actually, before we even get to that, summer hiatus actually meant we were in the Caribbean for almost two weeks filming workouts for your Tone It Up app.
- 1:51I am also on the mat teaching workouts.
- 1:55So make sure you also subscribe to your Toner Up app.
- 1:58Link is in the show notes.
- 2:00You can get seven days free trial because we got a lot of really great programs coming up, including a fall program, a meditation program.
- 2:10We're already working on your 2027
- 2:127 January challenge program.
- 2:15We are in post-production now.
- 2:17It is so much love and work that has gone into this, just making all of these improvements to your app for the community.
- 2:26So thank you.
- 2:27I'm so excited.
- 2:28And one of my favorite stories too, when I first got back on the mat, I just wanted a rainbow.
- 2:33I wanted a rainbow.
- 2:35And while I was filming a workout, it started raining
- 2:40And then I turned around and looked at the ocean and there was a rainbow, a double rainbow.
- 2:45And I literally just started crying because I feel so welcomed home on the mat and the encouragement for all of you.
- 2:54I think I'll do a separate podcast kind of just talking about that whole moment and what went into filming these workouts.
- 3:02I put a lot of heart and soul into it.
- 3:04It's not just pressing play on a camera and pumping out a workout.
- 3:08There's intention behind everything and what goes into it.
- 3:12That's for another episode.
- 3:13But this episode, my friend Jasmine Sharp is here.
- 3:17She lives here in Austin.
- 3:19She came to the Tone It Down studio.
- 3:22And we talk all things Pilates because we're
- 3:26We know our girls love Pilates, but it's a really honest conversation where Jasmine breaks down the real history of Pilates.
- 3:32So we get some educational tidbits and how it started in hospital beds.
- 3:36We debunk the Pilates princess stereotype once and for all.
- 3:41And also we talk about perimenopause journeys, including hormone shifts that nobody warns any of us about.
- 3:48We talk about fascia and we talk about working through injuries without giving up and also about friendships and being a single mom, building a business.
- 3:59You're going to love this episode and make sure you share it with someone who needs to hear it too.
- 4:04All right.
- 4:05I love you.
- 4:05Make sure you check in with me on social media, Tone It Up or Karina Dawn.
- 4:09Let me know what you think of the episode and enjoy.
- 4:13Jasmine Sharp, Pilates expert here in Austin, Texas, who I met.
- 4:18How did I...
- 4:20How did I meet you?
- 4:22I think because of just all of our parallels, we went to that same facial.
- 4:27Oh, for clear stem.
- 4:28Uh-huh.
- 4:28Yeah.
- 4:28Okay.
- 4:29And you were across the table, and I'm like, I have to go say hi.
- 4:31I've technically known her.
- 4:32Yeah.
- 4:33One way or another without ever meeting you in person.
- 4:36Before we dive into all that, let's just for the people like Pilates is booming and you've been in Pilates for 20 years.
- 4:43How long?
- 4:44Since 2007.
- 4:45Okay.
- 4:45Let's just talk Pilates right now because everyone's interested in Pilates, doing Pilates.
- 4:51And even for myself, I came to private sessions with you.
- 4:55Freaking I left shaking.
- 4:58I had to sit in my car for a moment and be like, what just happened?
- 5:02So let's just deep dive into Pilates first.
- 5:05Great.
- 5:06What would you like to know?
- 5:08How did you get interested in it?
- 5:10Because you had an injury or something, right?
- 5:13Yes, I did have an injury just from personal training and being in ballet and being in volleyball.
- 5:19It comes with it.
- 5:20But I was living in Palm Springs and one of our high intensity studios opened and the owners both lived in Los Angeles and they would drive out to open their studio and they needed teachers.
- 5:31And
- 5:32I, because probably ballet and volleyball had great form and technique and they're like, will you teach here?
- 5:36And I'm like, I would love to, I don't know what that entails.
- 5:38And at 27 back then, $200 a month was a lot of money.
- 5:42So I'm like, I would love to do it.
- 5:43But then, you know, it took about maybe a month to go through their certification.
- 5:47But I Googled this word Pilates, which 20 years ago wasn't as popular.
- 5:51It wasn't as it is now, how many places we actually have to work out.
- 5:56But
- 5:57I found out there was a Joseph Pilates.
- 5:58So after I started teaching high intensity for about six months, I then went back through contemporary Pilates.
- 6:04Then later learning there's a Joseph Pilates and he has a technique which is different than high intensity and contemporary.
- 6:09It's classical.
- 6:10So I was just eager to learn and eager to understand his technique and how it then changed into contemporary, then how it evolved again into high intensity and how all three, in my opinion, are very different.
- 6:22And so let's talk about why Pilates with the injury that you had from being an athlete, how Pilates helped you heal through that.
- 6:31Absolutely.
- 6:31So my injuries were bulging L4, L5 in the lower back, probably from lots of jumping, whether that's through ballet or volleyball and double hip torn labrums, obviously ballet and gymnastics.
- 6:43Yeah.
- 6:44And with that, Pilates is nice and safe because the way I started was on a reformer, not necessarily jumping to all the other apparatus, but you can lay down, you can do your footwork in parallel, internal, external, and you can really get your quads and your adductors and your abductors and, you know, get the glutes from a very safe horizontal position versus having to be vertical with a personal trainer, so to speak.
- 7:07So I felt like it was a wonderful way to transition into after PT into a safe place of,
- 7:14working biomechanically and keeping everything in alignment to then, you know, get back to the aggressive athletic stuff after that.
- 7:21I feel like when I was training with you on our privates in the beginning, you mentioned how Pilates was originally for people who were in homes who couldn't move as rehabilitation.
- 7:33Yes.
- 7:33So with Joseph, you know, I don't want to speak his words, but the stories we hear or, you know, I listen to a lot of his books and his podcasts, not his, but people that work directly with him, obviously.
- 7:44Yes, he was from Germany and he then moved to New York City and the ballet community started to manipulate the way that he would necessarily work his technique.
- 7:52Obviously, he started in parallel, but he had to work in the position of ballet first.
- 7:57So with that, I think that's how that inspired him because he get to work with bodies that he didn't necessarily get to work with.
- 8:04But yes, back in Germany, there were the soldiers that would get injured and they were in a hospital bed, so to speak, and they couldn't necessarily get up.
- 8:11Yep.
- 8:12So they would he would strengthen their hips, their core first to get them injured.
- 8:17up and moving again.
- 8:18So yeah, he would repair their injuries, so to speak, horizontally first and by making pulley systems and springs and ropes and, you know, leather straps and cables in order to then hook to this hospital bed to then him making his own apparatus, which is called the reformer, came from literally a hospital bed.
- 8:38So Pilates is booming, but then strength training is booming.
- 8:43So how do you bring both together?
- 8:45Because I'm all for everyone.
- 8:47For me, I have my weekly routine, including strength, mobility, yoga.
- 8:54But how do you talk to the people who I feel like there's kind of this culture right now where
- 8:59Strength people are putting down Pilates.
- 9:01Pilates people are like, you need Pilates.
- 9:03But how do we build that together and make that conversation come together?
- 9:07Because I think it's so important to bring both of it together.
- 9:10In regards to myself, ballet and volleyball are so extremely different.
- 9:14They're both athletic.
- 9:15Yeah.
- 9:15But they're so different where it's the same, in my opinion, back in Manhattan Beach in 2012, when I opened that studio, we had on Wednesdays, we'd call it Waits Wednesdays.
- 9:25You would encourage women to take these threes in their hands and put eights in their hands.
- 9:31Because they didn't want to.
- 9:33So you're like, you have to understand the way muscle mass works and how you will transition the body.
- 9:38You'll get nothing but benefit from picking up something a little bit heavier.
- 9:41So for me, I loved Pilates and I loved strength training, but I think it's just a matter of exposure and, you know, women trusting women to maybe put something a little bit heavier in your hand.
- 9:51And, you know, it is science.
- 9:52Like we both love strength training and we love picking up heavy and it isn't going to make you bulky.
- 9:57I do slow twitch.
- 9:58I don't do anything fast twitch.
- 10:00Can you explain that so people... Sure.
- 10:02Yeah.
- 10:03So again, I think being in the fitness industry, we love to try a little bit of everything.
- 10:07Slow twitch is slow, controlled.
- 10:09Maybe you're moving it four seconds on the way out, four seconds.
- 10:13I always use CrossFit as fast twitch.
- 10:15I love the beautiful bodies it makes in that industry, but they move fast and they push heavy.
- 10:20I just want to protect my lower back and my knees and my hips.
- 10:22So I prefer to move a little slower, but heavy.
- 10:25So I feel like there's a little bit something for everyone, but being able to help educate women where they can marry, so to speak, Pilates and strength training in one that they can do both.
- 10:36And it is OK.
- 10:36They don't have to choose one like our studio.
- 10:39You don't have to choose high intensity or contemporary because we offer both in addition to strength training and recovery.
- 10:45Do you train any like male athletes?
- 10:48Because I love to see them suffer.
- 10:50Absolutely.
- 10:51I know.
- 10:52I was just in St. Vincent and I took Bobby through a toned up workout that I created and he was just in the sand, dead.
- 11:00Yeah.
- 11:01And like men don't understand, like we work hard.
- 11:04It may not seem like it, but we work hard.
- 11:07So how do you explain to like an athlete or someone who's only strength training why they need to incorporate Pilates?
- 11:15So thankfully, I'm going to reference Manhattan Beach again, because I had the LA Kings wives and the LA Galaxy wives.
- 11:23They would drag their husbands in, I think probably to torture them indirectly, which was fantastic.
- 11:29But it was wonderful to see them go from, you know, being monsters on the ice and on the field to then coming in and being like, okay, we're going to work your small intrinsic muscle fibers.
- 11:38And we're going to ask you to do a few things at the same time, which is different than their training.
- 11:43So, again, I think they're finally seeing the value in the complement.
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:48Versus just we have to work one way.
- 11:50Right now we have one UT football player, thankfully, because he lives in the building.
- 11:55But I'm like, how do you get the rest of the team?
- 11:57Or, you know, Coach Sark, like how do we marry more Pilates into your training?
- 12:01But, you know, I'm happy to have one player right now.
- 12:04But let's see if we can expand that.
- 12:06There's that term like Pilates princess.
- 12:10How do you debunk that?
- 12:12Or, you know, even with tone it up, it's not about just looking toned up.
- 12:18It's about all the different aspects of your life and what you're toning up in your life.
- 12:22So how would what would you say to someone who's like.
- 12:25Pilates princess, like something soft, but you're not.
- 12:29Because I've been in your class, the one-on-ones.
- 12:31And I'm like, again, like I said, it was so hard.
- 12:35Well, this princess puts 50s in each hand and does deadlifts and squats.
- 12:38So if this is what a Pilates princess looks like, then okay.
- 12:42But again, I love people categorizing things, but I think for sharp body,
- 12:48We're princesses with lean muscle mass and or we're very strong.
- 12:52I think pushing strong and safe with a pink bow in my hair.
- 12:57OK, I'll do it.
- 12:57But I was talking to someone earlier today talking about you and how I've worked out with you and our conversations.
- 13:04And I was like, she's like the Sandy Brockman of Pilates.
- 13:10I respect her.
- 13:11I follow her, too.
- 13:12Yeah.
- 13:12I'm like, I can learn as much as I can from her.
- 13:14Yeah.
- 13:14I've trained with Sandy as well.
- 13:16And.
- 13:17You're very strong.
- 13:19And I think there's something to debunk about, like, with Pilates and strength and the fact that you're saying you lift 50 pounds with doing Pilates.
- 13:27But let's go back to now because I really want to open up.
- 13:30When we were training together, we started talking about perimenopause.
- 13:34Mm-hmm.
- 13:34Menopause.
- 13:35Mm-hmm.
- 13:36Everyone knows I've gone through my stuff with that and gaining weight and being in the fitness industry, having people pass judgment on you because you don't look a certain way.
- 13:47So this is a very large question.
- 13:49But you went through perimenopause starting at 42.
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:54And I was 37.
- 13:55Uh-huh.
- 13:57Let's talk about it because so many people in the community have these questions too.
- 14:02And like what changes happen to you and your body and your hormones?
- 14:08Absolutely.
- 14:09I'm going to back up a couple of decades just for a second.
- 14:12Yeah.
- 14:12I think as little girls and as women, we're trained to always fix or always we're not good enough or to not love yourself, you know.
- 14:20Yeah.
- 14:21insecurities come at a very young age.
- 14:24And I feel like through our 20s and in our 30s, we're still learning about ourselves.
- 14:28And I was at a point of finally being like, I really love myself.
- 14:33I have, you know, a little bit of cellulite here or I'm not perfect there, but wow, these decades of...
- 14:39of not feeling like I love myself or perfect.
- 14:42I don't feel that anymore, which came with age and wisdom.
- 14:45But when I got to that point, perimenopause hit.
- 14:48So I'm like, how can I be in a place of final love and acceptance and happiness?
- 14:52And then your hormones decide to completely turn on you.
- 14:57Like literally, I love myself.
- 14:59I'm feeling good.
- 15:01I am successful in my own right.
- 15:03And then let's just hit you with it.
- 15:06Take you down.
- 15:07Yeah.
- 15:07And again, nothing changes.
- 15:08You're still working out.
- 15:09You're still eating great.
- 15:10You're still moving.
- 15:11Nothing changes except your hormones.
- 15:13And all of a sudden, for me, it was the weight gain out of nowhere where I'm like, well, that's interesting.
- 15:18I went from my normal weight at 42 to all of a sudden, here's five pounds.
- 15:23Here's 10 pounds.
- 15:23Here's 15 pounds.
- 15:24Here's 20.
- 15:24Yeah.
- 15:25Are you 5'10"?
- 15:26I'm 5'10".
- 15:26We're the same.
- 15:27And I'm about probably 150-ish.
- 15:29And yeah, and I'm like, well, this is terrible.
- 15:31So you go to your OBGYN and they give you as much information as they can give you within their parameters, right?
- 15:36And I think I struggled for years, like probably three or four.
- 15:40And then finally, you know, I tried the patch and then the- What, like estrogen or progesterone?
- 15:45I think the estrogen patch, yeah, and the progesterone pill at night.
- 15:48And I'm like, I wasn't necessarily content.
- 15:51So then you keep diving deeper, diving deeper.
- 15:53And I still feel like I'm still trying to figure it out.
- 15:56And I haven't figured it out.
- 15:58And I am in the middle of listening to the Big Silence podcast where you were interviewing Esther Bloom.
- 16:03And I am like, okay.
- 16:05I think I need to go see her.
- 16:07Yeah.
- 16:07So that's where I am.
- 16:08I'm still learning.
- 16:09I'm still exploring.
- 16:10I'm asking women our age and women that have already been through Perry and been through menopause.
- 16:15And I'm like, I don't ever remember my mom and my aunts like having a meltdown.
- 16:19Like I have a meltdown, whether it's the mood or the night sweats, or I'm like, I don't remember my female family members ever talking about it ever talking about it ever.
- 16:29So, yeah, no, I'm still in the works and it is better.
- 16:32You know, I always like to say, and I'm honest that, you know, I tried peptides to help at least make me feel better and it has helped.
- 16:40But when it comes to symptoms, I still have the symptoms and I still need to figure out what the right fit is for me because it's a little bit different for everybody.
- 16:48What peptides did you do?
- 16:50Do you know?
- 16:50I tried trisepatide because I honestly was just at a point of you're in front of these women.
- 16:58They expect you to look a certain way.
- 16:59You're a leader, you know, in your industry.
- 17:02They expect you to have toned shoulders and a core and glutes and thighs.
- 17:06And yeah, I had to try trisepatide because I was at my wits end.
- 17:10I couldn't find the medicine that I wanted to find to shed the weight.
- 17:14So it did.
- 17:15It absolutely helped me shed, but it's not a one-all.
- 17:18It is, in my opinion, a double-edged sword because if you're not eating well and you're not working out, all the other things that they say with it is true.
- 17:26Your face changes, your body mass changes, and then you're almost like it's almost worse than it was before you even started.
- 17:32So you kind of can't just rely on that.
- 17:35It's just a vehicle to help you get where you want to go.
- 17:38Yeah, I respect you so much for saying that publicly as a fitness person, because that's always been my thing.
- 17:47I don't care.
- 17:48Do what you want to do.
- 17:49But if you are in the public eye, you're working out, you're teaching people how to take care of their bodies.
- 17:56and you are doing a peptide or you are doing a triseptide, good for you, but just say it.
- 18:01Like, that's totally fine.
- 18:03And I have not taken peptides or done any of that.
- 18:07And all the 40-plus pounds that I gained, I had to just go through it for years of what's happening.
- 18:14But then I also think with cortisol and stuff with my mom and the company and buying the company back, like, my body was just, like, crazy.
- 18:25giving up on me.
- 18:27It was protecting me, and I definitely was probably eating too much as my medicine.
- 18:35And finally, now I'm at this place.
- 18:37I just want women to know that you're allowed to go through these phases of life and...
- 18:45Find yourself again.
- 18:46Right.
- 18:47Where are you now?
- 18:48Like, where was your dark moment, but then coming out of it?
- 18:52Because I look at you and I'm like, you're in beautiful shape.
- 18:55I think you look amazing and you're fit.
- 18:58Where are you mentally now?
- 19:00Mentally, I'm well because I did utilize it as a vehicle, but also knowing it is a drug at the end of the day.
- 19:07And it wasn't my forever drug.
- 19:09It was get where you need to get, get back on track, identify if there are certain foods that, you know, I have a 10-year-old daughter.
- 19:16So we will bake cookies.
- 19:17And I also realized you can't clean up her mac and cheese.
- 19:21You can't eat her cookie.
- 19:22I was, you know, I was cleaning up.
- 19:24So I had to...
- 19:27You're not going to eat those chicken nuggets?
- 19:28I'll eat those chicken nuggets.
- 19:29It's like Bobby.
- 19:30Every time I don't finish the meal, he's like, I got that.
- 19:34But yeah, I think it's just the transparency.
- 19:36I think women trust us for a reason.
- 19:37And if we're transparent with us being in the fitness industry and us going through these hormone changes and what we had to do to get there, I feel like they'll trust us more and continue to trust us.
- 19:46But with your podcast, I think this helps us really listen to all the professionals out there for help because we can't always find the answers on our own.
- 19:54So I'm grateful for all the different people you interview because I'm learning so much too.
- 19:58Yeah.
- 20:00But where are you?
- 20:02In my darkness.
- 20:04Where are you now?
- 20:06Yeah.
- 20:07Like, what are you going through now?
- 20:09Because I'm only asking you this because all of the conversations I have with women our age.
- 20:15Yeah.
- 20:16who are going through it.
- 20:18A lot of single friends I have, a lot of single members in the community, a lot of single moms who are trying to navigate.
- 20:27And we're like, I think we go through this age where we grow so much and we find ourselves and then we start losing ourselves again.
- 20:37And then we're in this era of...
- 20:41Hi, I'm here and I deserve this.
- 20:43I deserve joy.
- 20:45I deserve happiness.
- 20:46I deserve to talk about what I'm going through.
- 20:49This loneliness epidemic is not only from 2020, but it also comes with aging as well.
- 20:58Loaded question again.
- 21:02So, yeah, where am I is I'm in a pull between build your business, build and scale and be a good mom.
- 21:11That's where I am.
- 21:12And, you know, for a while I was.
- 21:15Raising my daughter, her father has moved here now with his wife, which is great.
- 21:20It's become a big, big help.
- 21:21But there were dark times because I had to go from deciding what came first, being a mom or working and not having a nanny or family here or childcare help.
- 21:32And, you know, this little girl goes to the studio with me every day.
- 21:36So I was in a very dark place in regards to just trying to figure out what came first, be a good mom and, you know, her end up in therapy later because I wasn't a good mom.
- 21:44Mm-hmm.
- 21:45Because I always put the business first or being able to scale and take care of clients and take care of my staff.
- 21:51And but with that, only two options.
- 21:53That meant I was just an entrepreneur and just a mom.
- 21:57It didn't have give me any time for friends.
- 21:59So it's like I look at my life now after moving from California where I'm like, OK, you have a business and you're a mom, but you don't really have any friends like you don't do anything.
- 22:08Yeah.
- 22:09So, you know, now that I have a little bit more help with my daughter going to her father's, it's like, you're going to go to a networking group once a week just to meet people that you don't see being a mom or being a business owner.
- 22:20Go, and it's women.
- 22:21Like, I want to be around other women.
- 22:23Dating is a whole other chapter, but, you know, I'm really happy where I am with my business.
- 22:28And trying to meet more women and being a mom.
- 22:30Like we're in a great spot with my daughter, a great spot with the studio, a great spot scaling and growing.
- 22:35But it is still lonely if you don't have your friendships.
- 22:39Like what do you really have?
- 22:40So working on that.
- 22:43What would you say to someone listening who's feeling the same thing?
- 22:46Like what is, as I'm an introvert, I feel like most people are.
- 22:51And so it's easy to hide.
- 22:53Like what would you tell someone the first step of getting out there and making friends and connecting?
- 22:59If you go to a studio or a gym, you can meet other people.
- 23:02Because I feel like you find your gym or your studio where they're like-minded health and fitness enthusiasts, then they're going to make healthy choices too.
- 23:10You are who you surround yourself with 100%.
- 23:13For me, I jumped on the old like Instagram and Facebook to be like, who are these groups and where are these groups in Austin?
- 23:19And I just tried to find women forward groups that create a culture and a community that help build women up that are also trying to.
- 23:28maybe promote their business or maybe find more clients.
- 23:31So it's a great, it's, I mean, it's so easy now because we have Facebook and Instagram and we can meet people very quickly.
- 23:37And there's so many free activities out there.
- 23:40If you know, you don't want to pay for something, plenty of free things to do.
- 23:43But yeah, Austin is a beautiful city.
- 23:45There's so many activities on the water or women activities, or I don't know.
- 23:49It's just the possibilities are endless as long as you're willing to look from bed at home on your phone.
- 23:54Yeah.
- 23:55And then actually go out and do it.
- 23:58I know.
- 23:58I made dinner plans tomorrow night for 6.30 p.m.
- 24:01I'm like, I usually eat dinner at 5.
- 24:04But, I mean, we're going to ski shorts today for the perfect, like, early bird special.
- 24:08Yeah.
- 24:08But, yeah, I think it's so important to get out there because...
- 24:14Fitness, number one, even when Tone Up was created, is community coming together.
- 24:18And it's really, I think, finding friends through fitness at this point in our life is the best way to do it.
- 24:24And maybe you can find a loved one, a partner through fitness.
- 24:30Looking.
- 24:31I know.
- 24:31Let's talk about that.
- 24:33This is for my many single friends our age.
- 24:37And I'm like, girl.
- 24:39Yeah.
- 24:40I've been married 10 years now together, 14 years.
- 24:43And if I was dating, I would be a hermit.
- 24:46Yeah.
- 24:47How are they going to find me at home?
- 24:48Yeah.
- 24:49No way, no how.
- 24:51And marriage is also not easy.
- 24:54Dating is not easy.
- 24:55But in today's world,
- 24:58Let's talk about it.
- 25:00What do we do?
- 25:01We, and I laugh because I have one of our Pilates teachers.
- 25:04I'm like, you're so smart.
- 25:05You joined, is it High Rocks?
- 25:07Oh, yeah.
- 25:08That's intense.
- 25:09I'm like, nothing but eye candy.
- 25:11I'm like, you're so smart.
- 25:12I'm like, but what about us girls that don't want to do that?
- 25:15Where do we find?
- 25:16But I'm like, you strategically should place yourself where men are, whether that is UT football games or athletic events or –
- 25:26I don't go to bars, and I don't go to clubs, and I don't do CrossFit.
- 25:30It was back in the day.
- 25:30We don't do clubs anymore.
- 25:31So some people go to church, and then you'll find your partner in church.
- 25:34But I'm like, where would I go to meet my person?
- 25:38Now that we've moved to the West Side, I'm like, I guess I have to lunch more.
- 25:42I just came from Swedish Hill Bakery, and I'm like, apparently I need to lunch here more because there are a handful of what it looked like, single, you know, I'm looking for someone more...
- 25:5348 to 55, you know?
- 25:56So, yeah.
- 25:57Place yourself where men are.
- 25:59I'm trying to think about that.
- 26:00Where would they be?
- 26:01If it isn't a bar, you know?
- 26:03Right.
- 26:03Yeah.
- 26:03But there's so much, like, so many.
- 26:06No.
- 26:06For me.
- 26:07For me.
- 26:07Yeah, because, yeah, I just don't do CrossFit, so I wouldn't, but, you know, and men don't normally come to Pilates unless they're dragged in by their girlfriends or their wives.
- 26:14That is true.
- 26:16You might need to go where Sandy trains.
- 26:18Is that Collective?
- 26:19No, she's at C4 now.
- 26:21I don't even know her.
- 26:23Collective, yes.
- 26:24You should go to Collective.
- 26:27So strategically place yourself where?
- 26:31It's so interesting how, like, I don't know if it's just, like, getting older and more beautiful, but, like, we don't go to clubs.
- 26:38No.
- 26:38We don't go to bars to meet people.
- 26:40But it is within wellness and fitness.
- 26:43There's got to be some...
- 26:45Dating apps that are focused around that?
- 26:48I mean, yes to dating apps.
- 26:51I think they serve their purpose, but the caliber of person that I'm looking for, would they be on a dating app that is, I don't know.
- 26:59I mean, I don't, I feel like I work really hard and I want to live a certain lifestyle.
- 27:04And I also would like somebody that works hard and wants also a certain type of lifestyle.
- 27:09Yeah.
- 27:10So when you go to a UT game, do you buy a ticket?
- 27:14That's down on the field or do you go up to the clubs?
- 27:21I have not bought a UT ticket because I'm assuming that's where the college kids are.
- 27:26I have a beautiful friend.
- 27:27Her name is L'Oreal and she's married to Coach Sark.
- 27:30So she has graciously invited me a couple of times.
- 27:33Okay.
- 27:33So you're like on the field.
- 27:35Yeah, I have a beautiful friend.
- 27:36Yeah, she's fantastic.
- 27:38So I would think that a type of man that I was looking for would probably be in a suite.
- 27:43Yeah.
- 27:44Yeah.
- 27:47Ladies.
- 27:49We.
- 27:49Yeah.
- 27:50That's what we're going for these days.
- 27:52Single divorce dad would be great because he understands, you know, what I go through.
- 27:56You know, I want him to have ambition and a zest for life.
- 28:00See, that's the thing with some of my closest friends that are single and they are business owners.
- 28:06And it's hard.
- 28:07We've been talking about like.
- 28:09Having a guy who also has his own business or is very driven and can have kids, whatever.
- 28:16But being with a confident woman...
- 28:21He has to be confident as well.
- 28:23And, you know, I feel like, like you said, marriage is a lot of work and I want to figure that out.
- 28:27And it's not necessarily marriage, but partnership, forever partnership.
- 28:30I want to know how to continue to work on myself and not lose myself, but also give to a partner, which I feel like has its own challenges.
- 28:40Yeah.
- 28:40It is challenging and finding the partner that understands you and respects you.
- 28:45And I feel not tooting my own horn, but Bobby and I obviously have been through so much.
- 28:50Trust me, we've had the D word conversations and like it's not perfect all the time, but we're in such a good place now.
- 28:59And we continually, as we grow, learn how to grow with each other.
- 29:05Like it's constantly we're not the same people we were 14 years ago.
- 29:10So it's tough, girl, but I'd rather be here than being that hermit that no one would ever see.
- 29:16Yeah, yeah.
- 29:17And I always, people are like, no one's going to find you at home.
- 29:19And I'm like, I know.
- 29:20I have to leave my house in order to meet somebody.
- 29:23It's hard.
- 29:24Switching it back to fitness.
- 29:26Let's talk about fascia.
- 29:28You speak about that a lot.
- 29:29Let's talk about the importance of working on our fascia as we're through, you know, getting older and the importance of that.
- 29:37Well, they say that, you know, our fascia holds a lot of storage, whether that's trauma and or pain or obviously injury.
- 29:44And I feel like if we can tap into opening that up,
- 29:48to move better, to live better, to feel better.
- 29:51Why not?
- 29:52Again, back to Manhattan Beach reference again.
- 29:54Thankfully with the athletes, you know, I was able to learn why they use more foam rollers and why they perhaps use massage balls.
- 30:02Thankfully again for the CrossFit community, because they were one of the ones that introduced me to massage balls as well.
- 30:07So I start to understand why you utilize these myofascial release tools to feel better or to move better.
- 30:15But, you know, with being an athlete or just an everyday person, whether you're sitting at a desk all day long working, you know, you're going to compromise your anterior chain, the front of your body if you're stuck in a chair all day long.
- 30:25So it's like why you should be opening up your hip flexor or paroxysm.
- 30:28perhaps why you should be foam rolling that hip flexor and or using a different type of ball for your psoas which you know a muscle that's a culprit for a lot of pain in your body but I always say they because I read a lot of books and research and whoever they are no but it's like fascia is like a cobweb that runs through our skull down even through our feet and it is a beautiful web that can either keep
- 30:52keep your body very happy or keep you in pain.
- 30:55So if you're laying in bed and you feel like something is keeping you up because you can't sleep, I will get out of bed in the middle of the night and I'll foam roll or use, you know, a Pilates bouncy ball and let it just deeply penetrate up inside my internal and external obliques and my psoas because of ballet and how I'm still compromised in my core and my side laterals and the QL and my lumbar spine.
- 31:15So it's like we teach you, you know, hopefully coming to the studio at Sharp Body, how to utilize the foam rollers and stretch and use massage balls.
- 31:24Because if you're ever on vacation and you're locked up, of course, you could always DM, you know, Karina or myself on how to get out of this locked position with massage.
- 31:34With such tools.
- 31:35But, you know, we want you to feel well because, as we know, life isn't easy.
- 31:40And if you're not feeling good, life isn't that great.
- 31:42So we want you to feel good at all times.
- 31:44So it's just a matter of manipulating the fascia so you move better and feel better and live better.
- 31:48What is your thoughts on, you said you sometimes get up in the middle of the night and have to roll out yourself.
- 31:54Because sometimes I have a foot injury, which when I was coming to you, it was like the beginning of it.
- 32:00And it's still, this thing is just...
- 32:02It's for life now.
- 32:03Okay, it is?
- 32:04Okay.
- 32:04My doctor's like, well, we could do this or that, but as long as you're not in pain.
- 32:09But it does, my right foot tightens up, and I have to really work with my fascia and do foot yoga.
- 32:17It makes such a difference.
- 32:19So for you, if someone's feeling a pain or something, how would you tell them to not be discouraged by that?
- 32:29So when Karina came to the studio, she's like, here's what I can do.
- 32:33Here's what I can't do.
- 32:34I'm like, great, let's work within your parameters.
- 32:35So let's just use your foot for an example, not to get discouraged.
- 32:39I knew you couldn't go up on the balls and toes at the time, right?
- 32:42So that eliminated lunges for the time being.
- 32:44But we focused on driving through the heel for particular movements.
- 32:48So if you are feeling discouraged, you try to find an educator or an instructor that knows how to work within your parameters, right?
- 32:56That can still get you to work immediately.
- 32:58in any position, standing, laying, side body, supine, prone, all the positions, we can still get your body one way or another, but we would just avoid that particular injury.
- 33:07But then we would also try to heal it to help complement working the muscles around it to get you moving again, right?
- 33:13Like for me, yes, double hip torn labrums, that's for life for me as well.
- 33:18Yeah.
- 33:18you know, bulging discs.
- 33:19I know how to not turn it into a rupture, et cetera, but I still move my body plenty.
- 33:25Um, I won't run, but that's okay.
- 33:27Like I don't love running and that's okay.
- 33:29Running again, like a week ago.
- 33:30I was like, nope.
- 33:31Yeah.
- 33:32So it's like you find what you can do and it's about endorphins, right?
- 33:36So if you're feeling discouraged, you probably want to move your body a little bit or sweat at least a little bit, go get a massage, get your endorphins moving.
- 33:43Um,
- 33:43And that alone will make you feel better, which will bring your endorphins up, which will keep you encouraged and consistent, you know.
- 33:49And then over time, hopefully, we'll find a way that works for you.
- 33:53And if you do go to a group class and you go to the same teacher all the time, they know what you can and can't do.
- 33:57And they'll constantly work within your parameters.
- 33:59Yeah.
- 33:59Right?
- 34:00I think that's what's important, too.
- 34:01Yeah.
- 34:01We were able to get a very good workout in without me.
- 34:05And for those of you, I've talked about how I injured my foot before, but it literally was in my house.
- 34:11The Pomeranians peed on the floor and I slipped on it and I tore a tendon and it just didn't heal right.
- 34:18Okay.
- 34:19Because I was stubborn and did not wear my boot as prescribed.
- 34:24I would wear my boot for like a day.
- 34:26Okay.
- 34:26Okay.
- 34:27But no surgery, nothing?
- 34:28It's forever.
- 34:29It is forever.
- 34:30Yeah.
- 34:30Oh, darn.
- 34:31Okay.
- 34:32Yeah.
- 34:33But are you going up on the ball and toes yet?
- 34:35Yes, but I am now doing more PT with it.
- 34:40It just, it doesn't bend.
- 34:42My toes don't bend as much.
- 34:44You know what I mean?
- 34:45Yeah.
- 34:45They like, I'm trying to get mobility back into it.
- 34:48So FYI, in her case, I would then put the ball of her foot on my platform and her toes would kind of hang off the edge a smidge, which is still safe.
- 34:58So she wouldn't take complete overly flexion or, you know, and or extension in her foot because we would keep her safe.
- 35:05But yeah.
- 35:05But that's just me being stubborn.
- 35:07That's me being stubborn, not doing the right protocol to heal from an injury because I just wanted to keep going, going, going, going.
- 35:15How is it that us healers have a hard time healing ourself?
- 35:17What's that all about?
- 35:20Why can we heal so many people?
- 35:21I didn't need to go to therapy for that one.
- 35:24When it comes to ourselves, we're like, ah, I can brush my head under the rug.
- 35:27Well, because we've been through so much, we're like, I can power right through this.
- 35:30Yeah, keep going.
- 35:31Yeah, you just keep going.
- 35:34And I'm like, oh, my doctor's like, well, we could re-injure your foot and heal it.
- 35:40But then you have to actually pay attention to the protocol.
- 35:44I'm like, I'll just power through it.
- 35:45Yeah.
- 35:47Not saying for anyone to follow that protocol.
- 35:51But all right.
- 35:53So I want to do some rapid fires.
- 35:56Reformer or Matt?
- 35:58Ooh, they're both so great.
- 36:00If you're on vacation, mat, because you don't have a reformer.
- 36:03But the reformer is a beautiful apparatus that helps assist a lot of your mat moves.
- 36:08But I'll pick the reformer all day long.
- 36:11But if I have to choose the mat for vacation, I will mat all day long.
- 36:15And I do want to have ladies.
- 36:17Do we want Jasmine on the Tone It Up app teaching us some mat Pilates?
- 36:21Yeah.
- 36:22Please.
- 36:24I would love that because I'm so uneducated on Pilates and you're such a great teacher.
- 36:29You're so knowledgeable versus just someone walking you through a workout.
- 36:34You can tell like you have the knowledge and the expertise.
- 36:37Yeah.
- 36:38And give Karina the feedback if you want classical, contemporary, or high intensity.
- 36:42Okay, so explain those.
- 36:44Okay.
- 36:45Classical is the holistic principles and the way Joseph Pilates 100% intended it to be taught.
- 36:50And it is the same moves in the same order, and it's beautiful and brilliant, but much like Bikram yoga, the same order.
- 36:58Yeah, all the time.
- 36:59It's great.
- 36:59And then contemporary is what's happening in the world right now, where people are calling it hot mat or Pilates, and it's very loose, a very loose term, Pilates.
- 37:09It means maybe they'll do the hundreds, or maybe they'll, you know, do something else that might be Pilates, but...
- 37:15We try to do the, you know, incorporate the holistic principles, but it turns more into how has our spine evolved over the years?
- 37:23And then high intensity is definitely fitness where we, you know, maybe reference Pilates, but it's more hover planks and plank to pikes and that sort of thing.
- 37:32So there are, you know, three different movements in the world happening, and I think they're all beautifully different.
- 37:36And yeah, yeah.
- 37:39Foam roller or massage ball?
- 37:41Okay.
- 37:41So I always say foam rollers are more global.
- 37:44Massage balls are more local.
- 37:46So the massage balls travel with me all the time.
- 37:49They're always in my airplane bag, man.
- 37:51So I guess if I had to choose one, it'd probably be the massage balls because I can use them.
- 37:54But then I need a yoga block.
- 37:57So darn it.
- 37:58That is a tough one.
- 38:00Okay.
- 38:01One thing you would tell your 42-year-old self?
- 38:04A few years ago.
- 38:06What would I tell myself back then?
- 38:07A few years ago.
- 38:08Hold on, baby.
- 38:10Hold on.
- 38:11I feel like talking to myself right now.
- 38:15You got this.
- 38:15You know, I think the resilience has been there since birth.
- 38:20There's ebbs and flows.
- 38:21There's ups and downs.
- 38:23And it can only get better, right?
- 38:26Because we've been down and dark, but it can only get better.
- 38:29So let's keep celebrating.
- 38:31Isn't it so interesting?
- 38:33Like the thing you would tell your 42-year-old self is the same you would tell your 12-year-old self?
- 38:38100% yeah hang in there girl hang in there yeah best thing about being a mom in Austin yeah
- 38:49All the things you can do, believe it or not.
- 38:51We have hills.
- 38:52We have flat areas.
- 38:53We have water.
- 38:54There's just so many groups to join and sports to do and paddleboarding and pickleballing and paddle.
- 39:02I am hungry and constantly looking for things to do with my daughter.
- 39:06So we went to the Wishbone Bridge recently because I'm like, we've never been there.
- 39:09We need to go.
- 39:10What's that?
- 39:10It's out further east.
- 39:12They built this beautiful bridge for kind of three trails to come together.
- 39:16Oh, cool.
- 39:17But I did learn very quickly because we brought our scooters that it's concrete for only a short period of time.
- 39:22Then it turns back into dirt.
- 39:23So it's more of a walk, run, bike, not a scooter.
- 39:26Not a scooter trip.
- 39:26Have you floated the rivers yet?
- 39:30You know, when I took my daughter to New Braunfels to that water park, I noticed there was a tubing area behind.
- 39:36But it's on the list.
- 39:38Yeah, I did it for the first time ever.
- 39:40It was my friend, Jen Byrne.
- 39:41It was for her birthday and I'd never done it.
- 39:45And I had the best time.
- 39:46It was like two hours.
- 39:48I was, I have to tell you, I'll figure out what river it was, but it was so much fun.
- 39:52Okay, great.
- 39:53It was good vibes.
- 39:54Yeah.
- 39:55And then last one, your current don't give up message.
- 39:59Don't give up message?
- 40:00Yeah.
- 40:01I think that's been the motto of my life since I decided to enter the Pilates industry 20 years ago, not to give up.
- 40:07You know, if you really, truly feel the universe sent you a gift, just keep going.
- 40:12You know, there'll be partners that come and go.
- 40:14There'll be friends that come and go.
- 40:15Clients come and go.
- 40:16The right people will always find you.
- 40:18Continue to surround yourself with people that enrich your life because you are who you surround yourself with.
- 40:24Yeah, and just...
- 40:26I love that because I feel like there's so much talk around the pivot moment for people right now and women.
- 40:35And I get it.
- 40:38But I think you're the same as me.
- 40:41I just stick with it.
- 40:42Yeah.
- 40:42Like, this is my mission, my purpose, my passion.
- 40:46And I've loved it.
- 40:48I've hated it.
- 40:49I've loved it.
- 40:50I've hated it.
- 40:51And I'm back.
- 40:52And I love it.
- 40:53But you're allowed to have that.
- 40:56And I don't mean I've hated the community.
- 40:59I've just, like, we've been, I'm talking about business and learning and business partnerships.
- 41:04Mm-hmm.
- 41:06You know, it's such an incredible thing to be able to stick to something that you own because you love it.
- 41:14And it's saved you.
- 41:16It's helped you through so much.
- 41:18It's still here.
- 41:18I always say it's still here.
- 41:20And it's good.
- 41:21I mean, I feel women need us.
- 41:23Again, we were given this gift for a reason.
- 41:25So don't give up on ourselves and don't give up on them.
- 41:28Yeah, like we can't give up on what we've created over all of these years and stood for.
- 41:35Like we're here and we're back, baby.
- 41:39We make women feel better, whether that's through jobs that we give them and or they come as clients and we make them feel better, which makes for better humans in the world.
- 41:46And we need that.
- 41:47Yeah.
- 41:48A hundred percent.
- 41:49All right.
- 41:49We're going to go to my favorite place, Ski Shores.
- 41:52Love that place.
- 41:54All right.
- 41:55Where does everyone find you?
- 41:56If you're in Austin, how do we work out with you?
- 41:59Sharp Body Pilates.
- 42:00Our east side location is MLK right down the street from the UT Football Stadium.
- 42:06Where you can find Jasmine looking for a date.
- 42:08You can find me looking for a date.
- 42:10Yep.
- 42:10And then we have our, a couple more surprises coming up, but I won't talk about that too soon.
- 42:15Oh, okay.
- 42:15All right.
- 42:17Well, thank you for coming by, sweating in the studio.
- 42:22Let's go hang out with palms and go have a nice little bite on the water.
- 42:26Wonderful.
- 42:27Let's do it.
