- 0:06Stop projecting your ex onto your spouse.
- 0:12Assumptions are so durable they easily survive the relationship that created
- 0:16them. We then apply them to the next person who has a similar place in our life.
- 0:21Even if the assumption was true for our last relationship, that doesn't make
- 0:25it true for the person we married.
- 0:27Due to our age and inexperience, we tend to make more assumptions in our early
- 0:31romantic relationships than we do later.
- 0:35But unless we make an effort to jettison those assumptions, we unthinkingly
- 0:38paint them onto our spouse.
- 0:41What is going on? So let's look at some assumptions you might put on your spouse
- 0:45based on your first boy or girlfriend.
- 0:48What silence means. I've already covered this one, but it's worth reiterating it.
- 0:52Silence means that they are not talking, and there are many other...
- 0:56And there are many reasons for that.
- 0:58I'd know if they were upset. Some folks are quick to be vocal about feeling
- 1:01hurt or wronged. Others take time to process.
- 1:05And some have a bad habit of burying it. Assuming...
- 1:08Assuming no news is good news is dangerous. She needs space.
- 1:15Perhaps that was true when your
- 1:16first girlfriend acted as your wife is currently acting. But your wife.
- 1:23Might desperately want you to reach out to her and see you not doing so as an
- 1:27indication you don't care about her.
- 1:29A quick, do you want to be alone, is a good check.
- 1:32Arguing with him won't make a difference. Maybe he is more reasonable and more
- 1:36open to your thoughts than the 17-year-old guy who was neither.
- 1:39And he may assume you're saying nothing means,
- 1:44you have no objection. They know how that makes me feel.
- 1:50Perhaps the previous love interest did. Maybe they knew because you had a discussion
- 1:54with them, which you've not had with your spouse.
- 1:58Or you think it has to be obvious. If it has not been spoken,
- 2:02you may not be on the same page.
- 2:07Treat everything you knew from past relationships as a potential wrong assumption
- 2:11about the person you live with today.
- 2:13Can you find a place where you do that and make a conscious effort to stop?
- 2:17This is Paul, assuming you want to do marriage well. 3, 4, 5, 6...
