- 0:00Have you ever noticed that some of the biggest stress in our lives doesn't
- 0:05come from our circumstances? It comes from fighting our circumstances.
- 0:10We think, I should be more productive, my kids should
- 0:13be acting differently, I should be able to do
- 0:17more, and this season shouldn't be this hard.
- 0:21But what if the problem isn't that we don't know how to
- 0:24set boundaries What if it's because we're trying
- 0:28to build boundaries around the life we wish we had
- 0:33instead of the life that we're actually living?
- 0:37If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much,
- 0:41and wondering why peace still feels so hard to hold onto,
- 0:45you're in the right place. Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people
- 0:49pleaser, and your boundaries coach. Here we talk about how
- 0:53to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear
- 0:57on what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels
- 1:00lighter, calmer, and more satisfying.
- 1:04So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath,
- 1:07and get into this next episode.
- 1:12Hey friends, welcome back to Healthy Boundaries for Moms. I am your host,
- 1:16Lori Grimes, and And this is your midweek reset.
- 1:20So guys, earlier this week we talked about self-care being a
- 1:24foundational boundary and how taking care
- 1:28of ourselves is not selfish. It is actually protecting
- 1:32our capacity to love and to serve the people that
- 1:36God has entrusted to us, like our kids, our spouse,
- 1:39our friends. So today I want to take that conversation one step further.
- 1:44So I've realized that one of the greatest gifts we
- 1:49can give ourselves is accepting reality,
- 1:53not because we've given up hope on what it is that we want,
- 1:57but because I believe acceptance gives us a special
- 2:01type of clarity, and the clarity will
- 2:05in turn help us create better boundaries
- 2:08that actually work. So healthy
- 2:12boundaries, they are not built on the life we
- 2:16wish we had. They're based on the life that
- 2:20we are actually living in real time.
- 2:23I think many of us are spending so much energy
- 2:27just arguing with reality. Have you ever done that? Like,
- 2:31you wish things were different and you're arguing that They
- 2:35should be different. And I get that. We wish
- 2:39our schedule looked different. Some of us are thinking,
- 2:44man, our kids should be in a different stage
- 2:47by now. They should be more mature or,
- 2:51you know, better organized. We wish our marriage felt a
- 2:55little easier and that we weren't hitting some of the same road bumps that
- 2:59we have all along. And we wish we had more energy
- 3:03or more time or that we were just a more patient person.
- 3:07But when we keep measuring our lives against what
- 3:11we wish were true, we just
- 3:14end up like frustrated and angry
- 3:18and discouraged. Acceptance isn't giving up,
- 3:22guys. It isn't even lowering the standards
- 3:26or these goals that you have. And it isn't stopping your prayers
- 3:30for God to move. So what is it?
- 3:34Well, acceptance is just saying, this is where I
- 3:37am today. It doesn't mean that I'll never get to where I'm going.
- 3:42I'm improving. This is just where I am today. And once we
- 3:46know where we are fully, we can make
- 3:50wise decisions from there. So Proverbs 27:23
- 3:55says, Be sure you know the condition of your flocks. Give careful
- 3:59attention to your herds. Before a shepherd
- 4:03could care for his flock, he had to know its
- 4:07actual condition. So the same is true for us. We have to know the condition
- 4:10of our lives. We're responsible for that.
- 4:13That's something God has been teaching me this summer. And I kept wanting
- 4:17my school year routine to be what
- 4:21my summer routine looked like. And I wanted to still get the hour in the
- 4:24gym and the 20,000 steps every day. And I wanted to get into this
- 4:27calorie deficit, but that wasn't my reality. My kids
- 4:31were home, my schedule's different, we're out making
- 4:35memories, we're going to movies and the mall and the beach. Once I
- 4:38accepted that, I stopped feeling like I was constantly behind.
- 4:4230 minutes at the gym was fine now, and 15,000
- 4:47steps became enough, and I was satisfied. Maintenance calories
- 4:51became a wiser choice for me this season instead of just constantly
- 4:54feeling like I was failing because I hadn't hit that deficit.
- 4:59Those weren't lower standards, they were just realistic boundaries.
- 5:04And the same thing happens with food, guys. So like,
- 5:08me and my family were gonna go eat Mexican, and I love some
- 5:12good fajitas. And part of me was like, let me
- 5:16just order, I don't know, a salad. But you know, let's be real, I'm gonna
- 5:20get the fajitas. So I just
- 5:25planned for that. I just planned that we're eating a little bit later, I can
- 5:27skip lunch and just have a good dinner. And that let me enjoy the fajitas
- 5:32and enjoy it with my family and make room for them in my day.
- 5:35That's a realistic boundary. And the same thing is true
- 5:39in our relationships. Maybe one of your kids needs more reminders
- 5:43than their sibling, or maybe your husband just communicates
- 5:48a little differently than you. Instead of constantly wishing your kids
- 5:52are different and that your husband was different. We can meet them
- 5:56where they are while still holding those healthy expectations
- 6:00and healthy boundaries. So research on
- 6:04psychological flexibility, which I didn't know that was the term there,
- 6:08but it shows that people who are able to accept
- 6:12difficult realities instead of constantly resisting
- 6:16them tend to experience lower stress and greater emotional
- 6:20well-being. I think that's because Fighting reality
- 6:24is exhausting. Have you ever just been in your body when
- 6:27you're going through that unrealistic expectation? Your mind's
- 6:32just going a mile a minute. But when we accept the season we're in,
- 6:35we stopped reacting to life and we start
- 6:39planning for it. So we become proactive
- 6:43instead of reactive. So here's your midweek reset, guys.
- 6:46Ask yourself this question: Where am I still fighting reality?
- 6:51I mean, we are midweek. Some of this stuff has already popped up.
- 6:54Maybe it's your schedule, maybe it's your health, your finances
- 6:58are showing up again, maybe it's your parenting, or maybe it's
- 7:02just the season that you're in. So I want you to ask, what boundary
- 7:06would become easier if I could just accept where
- 7:10I am today instead of fighting it? So friend,
- 7:13acceptance is isn't quitting. It is not
- 7:17settling. And it's definitely not giving up on what
- 7:21God can do. Acceptance just simply says, Lord,
- 7:25this is where I am today. Help me be faithful
- 7:28here. Because when we stop fighting reality, we can
- 7:32gain the clarity that we need. And clarity will help us to
- 7:36build those boundaries, bring more peace,
- 7:39less stress, and and more faithfulness in the
- 7:43season that God has us in. Hey friend,
