- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities CE OS and even royalty Adam Cox, these
- 0:21recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's world
- 0:24famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. Now, if you've ever had anxiety
- 0:43on a busy road or a motorway or a freeway, this session may be
- 0:48of use because I was working with a client who for most of
- 0:53their life was a very confident, relaxed driver.
- 0:56But they had a couple of incidents on a major motorway
- 1:01and that had them questioning if they were going to feel that way
- 1:05again. And a lot of anxiety is anxiety
- 1:08feeding anxiety. Because if you.
- 1:10Feel anxious and then you're worrying about feeling anxious
- 1:13while driving. You get more anxiety and the
- 1:16spiral continues. So how we defeat this is to
- 1:19introduce resource States and all of the ingredients that
- 1:24almost kind of fuel the anxiety. We want to replace that with
- 1:27what fuels confidence and relaxation.
- 1:30So this is a session where actually the hypnosis starts
- 1:34with them imagining their worst case scenario on the roads and
- 1:37still feeling relaxed and calm and confident.
- 1:41Are you resourceful in that context?
- 1:43And then transitions to a local Rd. that's still challenging for
- 1:47them and then we. Have that on.
- 1:51Repeat until the idea of being on that road doesn't feel
- 1:55confident, doesn't feel exciting or enthusiastic.
- 1:58It feels boring, it feels mundane.
- 2:00It feels kind of when can this be over rather than I can't do
- 2:05this. And that's a big change because
- 2:07the ideal way to break a phobia is to give the client an
- 2:12experience of feeling the exact opposite of anxiety.
- 2:17And for a lot of people, the opposite of anxiety isn't
- 2:20confidence, it's just it's neutral, it's ambivalent, it's
- 2:25boring. And that's why this strategy is
- 2:28used for this particular client. So if you have a fear of driving
- 2:32on motorways or. Busy.
- 2:34Traffic. I remember when I first moved to
- 2:37London, I felt driving in central London very daunting
- 2:41because I hadn't had any experience of doing that.
- 2:44Now I wouldn't think twice about doing that, but it did feel for
- 2:49a while outside of the comfort zone.
- 2:50So if there's any driving that feels beyond your comfort zone,
- 2:53you might get some value from this session.
- 2:56Just remember though, that this session was created for an
- 2:58individual. Some of those suggestions might
- 3:01be perfect for them and not quite right for you, so bear
- 3:04that in mind as you listen to this.
- 3:06And if you do like the idea of working with me directly to have
- 3:09a bespoke session, then check out my website adamcox.co.uk or
- 3:14look in the description of this podcast and you'll see links
- 3:18there to book a free consultation call.
- 3:20But for now, you might really get some value from this session
- 3:22anyway. So find a quiet, comfortable
- 3:24place, ideally in an environment where you're not going to be
- 3:27distracted or disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 3:54Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in a
- 4:03feeling of quiet confidence. And as you exhale, build a sense
- 4:10of release of any tension, any stress, any worries.
- 4:22And as you breathe in, imagine breathing in a pure feeling of
- 4:26resourcefulness. And then scan your body for
- 4:33wherever worry or anxiety is hiding.
- 4:36And sometimes it's the head or the chest or the gut.
- 4:45And just allow yourself to give permission for that to be
- 4:50released. Each breath takes you deeper and
- 5:03deeper, relaxed. As your body relaxes, your
- 5:11imagination awakens. And I want you to go back to a
- 5:18memory of a new car. And maybe you picked up that new
- 5:28car from a dealership or maybe maybe it was somewhere else.
- 5:40And I wonder if you can reconnect without feeling of
- 5:44excitement or enthusiasm, a moment where you couldn't wait
- 5:52to drive. And maybe you can remember what
- 5:59the keys look like. Maybe you remember that smell of
- 6:05getting into that car. But I wonder if you can rekindle
- 6:12that feeling, rekindle the feeling of wanting to drive, not
- 6:24because you have to, but because you wanted to.
- 6:30You were choosing to. And maybe you can think of a
- 6:35time that you wanted to drive at least an hour or more.
- 6:43Maybe it was to see someone or get to somewhere or do something
- 6:48important. Driving wasn't the point.
- 6:58Driving was a means to an end. And sometimes you've driven
- 7:06where it didn't even feel like driving.
- 7:10It just felt like something automatic, effortless.
- 7:19There would have been times when you were driving when your mind
- 7:24needed to solve a problem and you were so focused on that
- 7:36driving was almost something that barely registered on your
- 7:45radar. I want you to connect with
- 7:52feelings of exciting driving, fun driving, enthusiastic
- 7:57driving, but also mundane, pragmatic driving.
- 8:05Autopilot. Driving.
- 8:09Imagine yourself behind the steering wheel during that
- 8:17pragmatic, mundane, dare I say it, boring driving.
- 8:28And just imagine while you're in that state, the driving doesn't
- 8:35need effort or too much concentration or focus.
- 8:43Just imagine you see a slip Rd. still connect without feeling of
- 8:56not enthusiastic confidence, but that pragmatic confidence.
- 9:00You just know how to do this, enjoying the slip Rd. that feeds
- 9:07into a motorway. And I want you to imagine this
- 9:15motorway is fast moving traffic and that's fine.
- 9:22And when you? Feel comfortable driving on the.
- 9:30Motorway of this fast moving traffic, let me know by nodding
- 9:36your head. That's it.
- 9:52And then just imagine the traffic continues at the same
- 10:01speed, it just gets busier. And you've had that many times.
- 10:07Stretches of Rd. that were empty and then certain junctions at
- 10:12certain times of the day make things busier.
- 10:15It's still fast moving. So imagine feeling that
- 10:21pragmatic confidence as this motorway is fast moving and
- 10:29busy. And just imagine the weather
- 10:35changes as it often does. Blue skies turn cloudy, cloud
- 10:45howdy turns rainy. Just imagine feeling that
- 10:50boring, mundane confidence of driving on a busy motorway
- 10:57surrounded by cars but perhaps big lorries.
- 11:05Imagine the windscreen wipers going back and forward and
- 11:12you're more interested on what music is playing, what you're
- 11:19going to do when you get to your destination.
- 11:23That even if there is traffic and lorries and rain, you're in
- 11:33a dialogue. It's like, So what?
- 11:38I can handle this just like I have done so many times before.
- 11:48And then you imagine it gets windier, really windy, so windy
- 11:55you see those lorries swaying a bit.
- 11:57And it doesn't bother you because you evaluate just how
- 12:05much space there is between the vehicles.
- 12:12Even if they sway, who cares? There's more than enough space
- 12:20on this motorway for everyone. Imagine seeing that there's a
- 12:27stretch without a hard shoulder. And just imagine thinking that
- 12:36even if you needed to pull over, the lack of a hard shoulder
- 12:46doesn't make it that much more challenging.
- 12:50Because in. Spaces on motorways without a
- 12:53hard shoulder. The cameras are constantly
- 12:57checked if someone breaks down there.
- 13:04On a space, on a motorway, without a hard shoulder, there
- 13:10is instant assistance provided. Not that you would need to, but
- 13:19even if something happened, you are minutes away from help.
- 13:28You choose the speed that you travel, the lane you travel in,
- 13:36the music you listen to, but more importantly, what you focus
- 13:42on. Where focus goes, energy flows.
- 13:51Imagine feeling the looseness of your hands on the steering
- 13:55wheel, sending a message to yourself.
- 14:01You can be relaxed when driving. Imagine tapping your feet on the
- 14:10fingers on the steering wheel to the rhythm of whatever music is
- 14:13playing, sending a message to yourself.
- 14:18The driving is a low stakes activity.
- 14:25The fact that you're driving alone just means that you can
- 14:29have the music on as loud as you want.
- 14:33You can play whatever music you want without thinking of other
- 14:39tastes in the same car. And when you can connect that
- 14:44feeling of empowered choices on that busy motorway in the wind
- 14:51and the rain and the fast moving track traffic, just let me know
- 14:55by nodding your head. That's it.
- 15:15I want you to get a sense that I'm feeling confident, calm, and
- 15:21that pragmatic, mundane confidence.
- 15:26In the worst conditions, your brain feels like you are
- 15:32recalibrating what it takes to make driving challenging.
- 15:40Imagine staying on that same motorway, seeing the motorways
- 15:48merge into one, seeing a contraflow.
- 15:55And I want you to think of so many areas of your life where
- 16:00anything that becomes more challenging makes it more fun
- 16:03and more interesting. Connect to that thing that if
- 16:09it's too easy, it feels too boring.
- 16:13This isn't about anxiety, it's about stimulation.
- 16:21And maybe play a game with yourself when your focus is on
- 16:29something else. Your emotion reflects it.
- 16:34If you look for bad weather conditions, if you look for
- 16:42confining traffic, your body will react if you look for open
- 16:48spaces, if you look for unusual cars, strange colours, if you
- 17:04think of those childhood games used to play in a car.
- 17:14Perhaps you can recall that time was distorted.
- 17:19The game of I Spy meant that that one hour journey felt
- 17:23shorter. And then just imagine the
- 17:30conditions improve. The dark clouds make everything
- 17:35lighter by going away. The rain stops, just imagine the
- 17:41traffic gets lighter, still fast moving and just feel that sense
- 17:45of freedom, liberation and choice on the open Rd.
- 17:57And then just imagine. You see a sign.
- 18:04This motorway you're imagining just in your imagination has a
- 18:11slip Rd. a junction that joins a local dual carriageway close to
- 18:19you. This may not happen in reality.
- 18:23It doesn't have to. You get to decide how you think
- 18:28of it. And going from that fast moving
- 18:32motorway to that dual carriageway.
- 18:35Notice how relaxed you feel. This feels like a walk in the
- 18:43park. This feels well within your
- 18:47comfort zone. This feels manageable, doable.
- 18:55It feels almost too easy. And I want you to imagine
- 19:07setting yourself the challenge of going up this dual carriage
- 19:14way to a particular junction and then turning around and going
- 19:19back in the opposite direction, up and down.
- 19:23And maybe it's two junctions or 4 junctions or more.
- 19:31And I want you to imagine you set yourself the challenge to
- 19:38keep driving up and down that dual carriage way.
- 19:44Not until you feel confident, accomplished, or proud, but
- 19:51until you feel bored and frustrated.
- 19:58You've gone up and down this dual carriage way so many times.
- 20:03With no reason to do it other than to get this feeling of
- 20:06boredom. And I want you to imagine maybe
- 20:13it's five times up and down, or 7 or 9 or 11 or 20.
- 20:23Just imagine all different conditions, weather, traffic up
- 20:31and down this dual carriageway. You know the one.
- 20:37Imagine driving alone and I wonder how many times you would
- 20:45have to imagine doing that until you're bored and just want to
- 20:52return home. So keep on imagining doing that
- 21:00until that feeling of driving, that stretch feels boring and
- 21:08pointless. That's the finishing line.
- 21:17That's when that House of Cards really starts crumbling down and
- 21:23when you can imagine feeling bored, frustrated, a feeling of
- 21:32I don't need to do this anymore, that you face down, that
- 21:37nemesis, it's lost all power over you.
- 21:40When that feeling comes up, let me know by nodding your head
- 22:10and you can distort time in your imagination.
- 22:14A 15 minute stretch of Rd. can be 15 seconds.
- 22:18Keep on. Imagine going up and down,
- 22:22seeing those familiar signposts, landmarks, sign.
- 22:33That's it. Feel that boredom.
- 22:35Embrace the boredom. That's what success feels like.
- 22:42And then imagine it's the following day and you need to go
- 22:49down that stretch of Rd. Notice how it feels not just
- 22:56slightly within your comfort zone, but well within it.
- 23:04Imagine 234 weeks go by and imagine a journey that requires
- 23:12that and you don't even think about the driving part.
- 23:19It almost feels like you've teleported to your destination
- 23:23because the driving was done on autopilot.
- 23:27No stress, no anxiety, no worries, just doing what your
- 23:38brain already knows how to do. I want you to feel that every
- 23:48journey that you do is either reminding yourself that you can
- 23:52do it or recalibrating your comfort zone.
- 23:59You can claim your wins, and even if there are echoes of
- 24:04anxiety, that simply desensitizes you to the same
- 24:10thing so that the next time is easier than the last.
- 24:16Whatever happens, the trajectory is moving towards a future when
- 24:22nothing phases you. That's it.
- 24:27So connect to that feeling and then imagine leaving that
- 24:33stretch of that dual carriageway while feeling bored and driving
- 24:38back to your home. Just imagine that as you hear
- 24:46the sound of that car door closing, when you put the keys
- 24:52in the location you put them, notice how good it feels to feel
- 25:01like you're on the other side of that barrier.
- 25:10What once was the resistance now becomes the foundation.
- 25:19It's time to return to the present, taking all of these new
- 25:22thoughts, ideas, and. Associations with you.
- 25:26So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 25:30nose. Just wiggle your fingers, wiggle
- 25:34your toes, connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I
- 25:39now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 25:43Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 25:52Open your eyes, open your eyes, 910.
- 25:55Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
