• 1:22
  SPEAKER_05: Parker.
• 1:23
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, so it's horrible.
• 1:24
  SPEAKER_05: It was wonderful.
• 1:26
  SPEAKER_05: No, it was fun.
• 1:27
SPEAKER_05: We what do we do?
• 1:29
SPEAKER_05: Oh, we marathoned some scary movies.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_05: We checked out some cool fun houses.
• 1:35
  SPEAKER_05: Carnival Evil, Cloud.
• 1:36
  SPEAKER_05: Very safe, fun houses.
• 1:37
SPEAKER_05: Very safe fun houses from a distance.
• 1:39
SPEAKER_02: Distance masked have fun houses.
• 1:41
SPEAKER_02: If you did not say fun houses, turn off this podcast and go get tested.
• 1:47
  SPEAKER_05: Yes.
• 1:48
  SPEAKER_05: Yes, please.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_05: Um and we also dressed up.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_02: Oh, what'd you dress up as?
• 1:54
SPEAKER_05: You know, Danny from Midsommar.
• 1:56
  SPEAKER_05: Obviously.
• 1:57
  SPEAKER_02: Iconic.
• 1:58
  SPEAKER_02: Iconic.
• 1:59
SPEAKER_05: What did you dress up as Parker?
• 2:01
SPEAKER_02: Well, I was um Nina Sayers.
• 2:05
SPEAKER_02: I don't know how to say her last name.
• 2:07
  SPEAKER_02: It's Sayers.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_05: Do we care about her last name?
• 2:09
  SPEAKER_05: We don't care.
• 2:10
  SPEAKER_02: Nina from Black Swan.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_02: However, you may be thinking, oh, Parker, you'd be an incredible black swan.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_02: No, I'm an innocent flower.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_02: I was the white swan.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_02: And for the patrons, lucky enough, not patrons, it was open to everyone, you shits.
• 2:26
SPEAKER_02: But for everybody who came to our Halloween party, they got to see me as White Swan and Caroline as the black swan.
• 2:34
  SPEAKER_02: Iconic.
• 2:36
SPEAKER_02: And no spoilers for that movie, but you know, it doesn't always end up well for the black swan.
• 2:41
SPEAKER_02: So that's why Caroline, she's she's out right now.
• 2:45
  SPEAKER_02: She's not coming back.
• 2:46
  SPEAKER_05: She's done.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_05: But you also incorporate a little blood.
• 2:49
  SPEAKER_05: Yes.
• 2:53
  SPEAKER_05: It's gotta be spooky.
• 2:54
  SPEAKER_05: Can't say.
• 2:55
SPEAKER_02: And also, like, again, this is not a black swan episode, but I was just using my imagination to kind of extend the events of the movie to how it might, you know, have ended up incorporate into blood on my face.
• 3:10
SPEAKER_02: Because of course, I was on Zoom in this costume, so it's gotta be, you know, on the face.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_05: Go on our go on Twitter.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_05: Have you posted anything on Instagram yet?
• 3:19
  SPEAKER_05: It's everywhere.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_02: You can follow at ScarymoviePod to see my stuff.
• 3:23
SPEAKER_02: You can follow at the Jewel Marie to see her incredible costume.
• 3:27
SPEAKER_04: I mean, get with it, guys.
• 3:29
  SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
• 3:29
SPEAKER_02: Now, as I said, we marathoned quite a few movies, and we thought, what a better way to kind of celebrate, or not celebrate, but mourn.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_02: Mourn the passing of our favorite holiday than by talking about all the great stuff that came out in October.
• 3:47
  SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
• 3:48
SPEAKER_02: So we've got what have we got coming up, Julianne?
• 3:51
SPEAKER_05: We've got the Mortuary Collection.
• 3:53
  SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_02: Taking the world by storm.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_05: We've got the Craft Legacy.
• 3:58
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_02: Taking the World by Storm.
• 4:00
SPEAKER_05: Not as much, but you're gonna talk about the haunting of Bly Manor.
• 4:06
  SPEAKER_02: Bly Manor, yeah.
• 4:07
  SPEAKER_02: That's a storm that's taking the world.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_05: You can tell I didn't watch it.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_05: But um and what else were we doing?
• 4:14
  SPEAKER_02: A Nightstream Film Festival.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_02: And that was a great virtual film festival that I hope some of you went to because it was film festivals right now accessible.
• 4:23
  SPEAKER_04: Yes.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_02: You can watch them online.
• 4:25
SPEAKER_02: And so we were lucky enough to get to participate in Nightstream Film Festival.
• 4:30
SPEAKER_02: And so we'll tell you a few of the stuff that maybe you saw there, or if you didn't, that you can look forward to seeing soon.
• 4:36
SPEAKER_05: Yay! See, Halloween's never over, guys.
• 4:40
  unknown: Woo!
• 4:42
SPEAKER_02: So let's get started with the one we've all been waiting for.
• 4:47
SPEAKER_02: Juliana, actually, I want to know when did you first hear that there was a remake of The Craft coming out?
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_05: Woof.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_05: Um I want to say when they first announced it in 2017, maybe?
• 4:58
SPEAKER_05: When I think Bloody Disgusting reported it and broke the news, and we were like, oh 2018, maybe whatever it was.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_05: And you know, listen, I I don't hate remakes.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_05: I think some I think sometimes if you have something else to add to the story, something else to say with it, go for it.
• 5:19
  SPEAKER_05: You know?
• 5:20
SPEAKER_05: In this case, did they?
• 5:22
  SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_02: Got a hater in the house.
• 5:25
  SPEAKER_05: I mean, I mean, you know, we'll we'll we'll get into it.
• 5:28
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's um I didn't hear about this remake until like two weeks ago.
• 5:35
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, stop it.
• 5:36
  SPEAKER_05: You knew about it.
• 5:36
  SPEAKER_05: I did not.
• 5:37
SPEAKER_02: It came somebody said on It's been in the works for a while, yeah.
• 5:41
SPEAKER_02: Who was it who I believe it was Trace Thurman who posted on Twitter and said that there was a a craft remake being not the well but he was saying the craft remake was being released this month.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well that was a surprise.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_05: So they they dropped the announcement in like the end of September.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_05: And it was like, oh shit, because everyone knew it was coming, but we didn't know where it was.
• 6:03
  SPEAKER_02: I didn't know it was coming.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_05: Well, we you knew it, but you knew about it, right?
• 6:06
  SPEAKER_02: No.
• 6:07
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, stop.
• 6:08
  SPEAKER_02: I had no idea.
• 6:09
  SPEAKER_05: Parker's on his ball.
• 6:09
  SPEAKER_05: He's he's lying.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_02: He's I mean, I usually am, but anyway, it's uh Yeah, what'd you think?
• 6:16
SPEAKER_05: What do we have to say about it?
• 6:17
SPEAKER_05: I mean, listen, I it's getting a lot of comparison to Black Christmas 2019 from last year, which we were not a fan of.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_02: Um But do you think the the comparisons are justified?
• 6:27
SPEAKER_05: I do, because they're both heavy-handed with bashing over the head with other themes.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_05: Um and I think the intentions are there, the intentions are good, but it's too heavy-handed.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we love a theme.
• 6:40
  SPEAKER_05: We love a theme.
• 6:41
SPEAKER_05: We love good positive messages, we love representation, we love all the stuff that it talks about, and it gets into however we don't need to be bashing the head or over 20,000 times.
• 6:51
SPEAKER_05: And I think it's uh I think the word I use the most in my notes was cringe.
• 6:58
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_05: You and I were kind of laughing a lot, like like not in a not with it.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_02: I will say that me and you, Julianne, as grown adults watching this together, uh that's the way to do it.
• 7:11
SPEAKER_02: It was a fun time doing that.
• 7:14
  SPEAKER_05: Sure.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_05: You could it's not the worst thing in the world.
• 7:16
  SPEAKER_05: I mean, I've seen worse movies.
• 7:18
  SPEAKER_05: It's not it's it's there's you could definitely do worse.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_05: It's just that it's just not you just wasn't great.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that um what I think worked for me is that yeah, I think it started strong, actually.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_02: Uh there was a lot of representation.
• 7:32
SPEAKER_02: We saw there's a trans woman who's on the cast of young gals.
• 7:36
SPEAKER_02: There's um I mean, there was a black woman in the original craft, so that wasn't new, but still good to see.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_02: Always excited to see that kind of representation.
• 7:46
SPEAKER_02: But I think the the the disconnect that you're finding here with the theme.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_02: So this was written and directed by Zoe Lister Jones, who uh was a very um seasoned actress and has made um a few uh I have Band-Aid from 2017 as her Which I'm not familiar with.
• 8:04
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm not familiar.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_02: That seemed to be her her breakthrough behind the scenes um uh directoral debut?
• 8:13
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_02: And so like she's worked before behind the camera.
• 8:17
SPEAKER_02: I found that her dialogue was like she wrote the movie as well.
• 8:22
  SPEAKER_05: She wrote it, yes.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_02: And that's what the downfall was for me, not necessarily in the action, but like in this um there's like a climactic battle and just the the dialogue back and forth between the villains and the girls was just absolutely just I was gonna say disgusting, but yeah, cringe.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's where like you don't need to flat out say, I am a man and I hate women and I'm going to steal the power from you.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_02: Like we're seeing that, you don't need to say it to me.
• 8:51
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I think this one just la like I I appreciated that I think they wanted to change from the original.
• 8:57
SPEAKER_05: In the original one, the girls end up not getting along and everything falls apart, and it's like, oh what the hell?
• 9:02
SPEAKER_05: Like it's supposed to be a feminist movie, and it ends up not being that.
• 9:05
SPEAKER_05: Even though, let's be honest, sometimes people just don't get along and things don't work out.
• 9:09
SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's you know, but with this one, I did appreciate that they all still remained friends at the end.
• 9:13
SPEAKER_05: Like that's cool, but also kind of boring.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, don't you think there's complexity and nuance to like the girls in the original craft, they are friends, yeah, but it's just like it's teen teenage girls, it's it's complicated, man.
• 9:27
  SPEAKER_05: I was a teenage girl once.
• 9:29
  unknown: Yeah.
• 9:29
  SPEAKER_02: You were?
• 9:30
  SPEAKER_05: No, okay.
• 9:30
SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, I was about to say, I don't think it's that different.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_02: I mean, it is different, girls and boys, but like the the dynamics of a close friendship, like that's it's not easy.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_02: And it's like there's always fall in and out.
• 9:43
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 9:43
SPEAKER_02: And for the girls in the new craft, which they do have some some problems, yeah, but for them to just be so like like women have to stand together, men bad, women good.
• 9:56
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_02: It's just too black and white, whereas the old one, and we even talked about each of the gals in the old movie, old, it's not that old, but the original movie.
• 10:05
SPEAKER_02: Um, they each have their own battles that they're fighting.
• 10:09
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 10:09
SPEAKER_02: And so it felt a little um reductive for this movie to be like, there is one battle and one battle only.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_05: I will say one thing I did know, which I I was actually happy to see that I did appreciate that they showed a period on a movie.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_05: That's what girls should see.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_05: It's not it's nothing to be embarrassed of.
• 10:27
SPEAKER_05: She's like, she got her period, you know, which sucks and when you're like, I mean, how old were they supposed to be?
• 10:33
  SPEAKER_05: Do we know?
• 10:33
  SPEAKER_05: I think younger.
• 10:35
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, kind of like sophomores or something.
• 10:36
SPEAKER_05: Like, and like it happens.
• 10:38
SPEAKER_05: And my heart, like, I my heart sunk when she was she was like mortified.
• 10:42
  SPEAKER_05: I'm like, oh crap.
• 10:43
  SPEAKER_05: Like, and I and I I because we've all been there.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_05: Women, we've all been there when it's cool.
• 10:46
SPEAKER_05: Like, you get it in opportune times, and you're like, shit.
• 10:49
SPEAKER_05: And she they they make that as like the starting point of like her powers.
• 10:53
  SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, that's that's cool.
• 10:55
  SPEAKER_05: Like, that's a cool metaphor there.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_05: And they actually showed it.
• 10:58
  SPEAKER_05: Like that's like that's ballsy.
• 10:59
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but then from there, it just kind of got like it's like okay, it's about menstruation.
• 11:04
SPEAKER_05: Or sorry, it's about puberty.
• 11:06
  SPEAKER_05: Okay, that's cool.
• 11:07
SPEAKER_05: That like Harry and like many other movies, and then it kind of was like, What is this about?
• 11:11
SPEAKER_05: Except for just female empowerment, okay, great, but like let's dive deeper, and it just did not dive deeper for me, you know what I mean?
• 11:18
  SPEAKER_02: Female empowerment, that's a big topic.
• 11:20
  SPEAKER_02: Patriarchy, that's a big topic.
• 11:21
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 11:21
SPEAKER_05: Like you have to wide, yeah.
• 11:23
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what's the movie didn't have a point.
• 11:25
SPEAKER_02: Like it was just like it was just like if somebody came to pitch me a movie and said, I want to make a movie about the patriarchy and female empowerment, it's like, okay, is there anything else?
• 11:36
SPEAKER_02: Like, and it seems like when they came to Jason, Jason Blum, my bud, when somebody came to him and pitched this script, he must have just been like, female empowerment, you had me.
• 11:47
  SPEAKER_02: Go for it.
• 11:48
SPEAKER_05: Because a couple years ago he made a stupid comment saying that, oh, there's not enough women who want to make horror movies, and now he's like, Shit, I gotta make good, I gotta make good on that, I gotta scramble and get the scripts, and like there's something to be said, like with Black Christmas too.
• 12:02
SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't think these girls are getting these w women, I should say, are getting enough time with their movies.
• 12:07
SPEAKER_02: Time and I think there's something to be said also for like um guidance isn't the word I'm looking for, but like feedback.
• 12:15
SPEAKER_02: Feedback or like just yeah, like how many people it this seemed to me like like not enough people watched it before they made it.
• 12:23
  SPEAKER_05: Right?
• 12:23
  SPEAKER_05: It's like it's just yeah.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_05: So I don't know how much time you're gonna spend on this, but like Yeah, I mean that's all I have to say.
• 12:29
SPEAKER_02: I think it's better than Black Christmas 2019 for sure.
• 12:32
SPEAKER_02: I think this is a watchable movie for sure.
• 12:34
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 12:35
SPEAKER_02: Um I think that the style seems very in tune with.
• 12:40
  SPEAKER_02: I mean, I love Riverdale.
• 12:41
SPEAKER_02: I like the chilling adventures of Sabrina.
• 12:43
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 12:44
  SPEAKER_02: It lines right up.
• 12:45
SPEAKER_02: I could watch all three of those in a marathon and they all match.
• 12:47
SPEAKER_02: I think that it does seem partly in um in tune with the youth of today.
• 12:53
SPEAKER_02: Julianne and I were kind of like we thought that a lot of the references and language were was dated, but then I guess we we saw online some young people saying that it was spot on.
• 13:05
SPEAKER_05: Which I don't agree with that, but I mean, I guess we're not the youths.
• 13:10
  SPEAKER_05: We're the old.
• 13:10
  SPEAKER_05: We're not the we're the old, so you know, we're past 25, we're done, we're over.
• 13:14
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 13:15
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, um Well, can I think it's just a testament to how timeless the art of our childhood was.
• 13:22
  SPEAKER_02: Twilight.
• 13:23
SPEAKER_02: It holds up, I guess.
• 13:25
  SPEAKER_05: Twilight references.
• 13:26
  SPEAKER_05: Really, guys?
• 13:27
SPEAKER_05: These girls were like six when these when these movies came out.
• 13:31
  SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
• 13:32
SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, what do we I was Edward Colen one year for Halloween.
• 13:35
SPEAKER_02: I believe my friend was Bella.
• 13:36
  SPEAKER_02: I believe it.
• 13:37
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 13:37
  SPEAKER_02: I buy it.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_02: I sprayed I sprayed myself with the glitter, yeah, that you could get from the Halloween store.
• 13:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it had to be a gay Edward, omnially.
• 13:45
  SPEAKER_02: Omniusly.
• 13:46
  SPEAKER_02: Obviously.
• 13:47
SPEAKER_02: Julianne, so the craft legacy.
• 13:50
SPEAKER_02: It is a legacy, of course.
• 13:54
SPEAKER_05: We'd even get into well, we're not gonna get into it.
• 13:56
SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, we shouldn't.
• 13:58
SPEAKER_05: But whoa, the final moments I have to say.
• 14:01
  SPEAKER_05: Woof.
• 14:02
SPEAKER_02: Yes, there is a surprise brewing in this movie that we will leave as a surprise.
• 14:06
  SPEAKER_05: And Oh my lord.
• 14:08
  SPEAKER_02: A surprise it was.
• 14:10
  SPEAKER_05: A choice it was.
• 14:13
  SPEAKER_02: So enough on z I mute.
• 14:17
SPEAKER_02: What would you say on a scary scale of one to five, how would you rate the craft legacy?
• 14:21
  SPEAKER_05: Negative one?
• 14:22
  SPEAKER_05: No.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_05: It wasn't it was not there was like one moment of like creepy horror.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_02: It was it was strange.
• 14:28
SPEAKER_05: And it was and it was just it went into nothing.
• 14:30
SPEAKER_05: It was like, oh ho ho, jump scared.
• 14:32
  SPEAKER_05: It's a fake out.
• 14:33
  SPEAKER_05: No.
• 14:33
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd put it at a zero as well.
• 14:35
SPEAKER_02: Well, you put it at negative one.
• 14:37
SPEAKER_02: I'll put it at zero because there was no attempt at scaring us.
• 14:41
SPEAKER_02: I think that the original has like some body horror, it has some psychological.
• 14:46
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_02: Of course, there's always with these like female coming of age stuff.
• 14:49
SPEAKER_02: I mean, Carrie, before even all of the horror happens, and Carrie, like, I think there's still horror and just her, like, you know.
• 14:57
  SPEAKER_05: It's it's spookier.
• 14:59
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 14:59
SPEAKER_05: This wasn't spooky at all.
• 15:00
SPEAKER_02: And yeah, this one, it it's weird that it it took a few minutes to try and like make like um what would you call it?
• 15:07
SPEAKER_02: Not um just like horror.
• 15:09
  SPEAKER_05: Orchestra.
• 15:10
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like a horror scene out of the blue.
• 15:12
SPEAKER_02: Didn't work, so yeah, zero.
• 15:13
SPEAKER_02: Would you give the craft legacy a smash or a slash?
• 15:17
SPEAKER_05: I think you know the answer.
• 15:18
  SPEAKER_05: Slash.
• 15:20
SPEAKER_05: No, it's it's like I said, it's not not the worst thing in the world, but it's not good.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd give it a slash as well.
• 15:26
SPEAKER_02: Like I like we said, like maybe this is like really changing some lives for 14-year-olds right now.
• 15:31
  SPEAKER_02: But up to it.
• 15:32
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, I think I said this in Black Christmas, our Black Christmas episode.
• 15:36
SPEAKER_02: Um, you can't make movies for one person.
• 15:39
SPEAKER_02: Like, it's gotta have something for everyone.
• 15:41
SPEAKER_02: We talk about how like subversive children's like cartoons can be because they have to have enjoyable things for adults too.
• 15:49
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 15:49
  SPEAKER_02: The hallowed masculine.
• 15:52
  SPEAKER_04: Oh.
• 15:53
SPEAKER_02: If you buy a if you buy a copy of The Hallowed Masculine by David DuCovny, you open it up, it's just a picture of me.
• 16:01
  SPEAKER_02: That's all it is.
• 16:02
  SPEAKER_05: Patriarchy Parker.
• 16:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I did that was probably my favorite part of the movie was uh her finding those books.
• 16:08
SPEAKER_05: Like it was so on the nose that it was just like batting you in the nose.
• 16:13
  SPEAKER_05: Anyway.
• 16:14
SPEAKER_02: So another thing that's sweeping swept October into its spooky grasp was the haunting of Bly Manor.
• 16:21
SPEAKER_02: And Julianne, I know that you didn't watch it, but of course you saw it.
• 16:24
SPEAKER_05: I watched the first I watched the first season, and I've, you know, it was fine.
• 16:28
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 16:28
  SPEAKER_05: It was fine.
• 16:29
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 16:30
  SPEAKER_02: I Hill House is a masterpiece.
• 16:32
SPEAKER_05: I think, you know what it is for me?
• 16:34
SPEAKER_05: Mike Flanagan sometimes, some of his stuff is a little bit like, oh, shucks, and I don't like that.
• 16:39
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 16:40
SPEAKER_05: And I find his stuff to be a little bit like, oh, that's so sweet.
• 16:43
  SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, I don't I'm I'm watching horror.
• 16:44
SPEAKER_05: I'm not like, oh shucks.
• 16:46
SPEAKER_02: Then you will absolutely despise Bly Manor because you know, Hill House wasn't particularly scary.
• 16:53
SPEAKER_02: It had moments, and I thought that the psychological distress was very I was very disturbed by a lot of stuff in it.
• 17:00
  SPEAKER_03: Sure.
• 17:00
SPEAKER_02: But Bly Manner definitely is not trying to scare you.
• 17:04
SPEAKER_02: It's an adaptation of The Turn of the Screw, which, if you're one of our patrons, we did a review of The Turning that came out in January.
• 17:12
SPEAKER_02: Another adaptation of the turn of the screw this year.
• 17:15
  SPEAKER_05: Jesus, it was January.
• 17:17
SPEAKER_02: Or maybe it was February.
• 17:18
SPEAKER_02: It was the first two months of the month, of the year.
• 17:22
SPEAKER_02: So another adaptation of that.
• 17:23
SPEAKER_02: And what I appreciate about Mike Flanagan is that he wasn't just pulling from that, he pulls from the whole like um Mike Flanagan pulled from his his works, like he pulled other ghosts from his other ghost stories.
• 17:37
SPEAKER_02: And I love that that that it's almost like Mike Flanagan like wants a challenge and he's going to like think, how can I do Turn of the Screw but make like a complete image of this whole universe?
• 17:49
SPEAKER_02: And he did the same thing with Hill House.
• 17:51
  SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously Dr.
• 17:53
  SPEAKER_02: Sleep.
• 17:53
SPEAKER_02: I mean, he mixed and matched, you know, Kubrick and King and all of that stuff.
• 17:59
SPEAKER_02: I think that he does a really incredible job at making these like large, large scale um, like I said, universes for these things.
• 18:07
  SPEAKER_02: Sure.
• 18:08
SPEAKER_02: Uh, like I said, it wasn't scary.
• 18:09
  SPEAKER_02: Some incredible, incredible performances.
• 18:12
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it always does.
• 18:14
SPEAKER_05: It doesn't need to be scary.
• 18:15
SPEAKER_02: Particularly Victoria Pedretti, who plays Danny in this and was in you.
• 18:20
SPEAKER_02: She was Nell and she wasn't you, but she was Nell in Hill House.
• 18:24
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 18:24
SPEAKER_02: And she was just, I love her.
• 18:27
SPEAKER_02: She does this weird walk-run thing in this season that was like a little like, excuse me, what are you doing?
• 18:33
SPEAKER_02: So I definitely think it's worth checking out.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_02: Like you said, it is very mushy-gushy feel-good this season.
• 18:40
SPEAKER_02: Um, it really focuses on the romantic aspects of those kind of gothic ghost stories.
• 18:46
SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's very light on the ghosts.
• 18:48
  SPEAKER_02: There was, I I mean, hardly a ghost.
• 18:50
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 18:50
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 18:51
SPEAKER_02: They were there, but I do enjoy how sometimes even too literal he gets about, you know, we talk so much about how horror is metaphor.
• 18:59
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 18:59
SPEAKER_02: And like sometimes he's goes hard on that.
• 19:02
SPEAKER_02: But I appreciate that, like, I hate to say this all the time about stuff, but it's like, if you're not familiar with the horror canon, Hill House and Blind Manor are, I think, not horror for people who don't like horror.
• 19:16
SPEAKER_02: I think it's still good for people who do like horror, but it's accessible.
• 19:20
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 19:20
SPEAKER_02: It's easy for you to understand without the context of how horror operates.
• 19:25
SPEAKER_02: It's almost like a little education of its own.
• 19:27
  SPEAKER_02: Sure.
• 19:28
  SPEAKER_02: I love it.
• 19:28
SPEAKER_05: It's kind of like gateway horror, sort of.
• 19:30
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
• 19:31
SPEAKER_02: So I definitely think it's worth tuning into.
• 19:33
  SPEAKER_02: It's beautiful as always.
• 19:34
SPEAKER_02: It's a little, there are a few dry spots.
• 19:36
SPEAKER_02: There's one episode towards the end in particular that I was like, this isn't good.
• 19:40
SPEAKER_02: But most of it is.
• 19:41
SPEAKER_02: So uh I would give it scary scale, give it a one.
• 19:45
  SPEAKER_02: Wow.
• 19:45
SPEAKER_02: It's scarier than the craft, because I mean it makes a few efforts, but I mean, not particularly.
• 19:50
  SPEAKER_05: Smash or slash?
• 19:52
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's it's a smash.
• 19:53
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I just I can get a little sentimental, I can get a little hopeless, romantic.
• 20:00
SPEAKER_02: It's got some great um queer representation, and I'm always here for that.
• 20:06
  SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
• 20:07
SPEAKER_02: So, and I saw some negative talk about the queer representation.
• 20:10
  SPEAKER_02: There was.
• 20:11
  SPEAKER_02: I disagree.
• 20:12
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 20:12
SPEAKER_02: I think that it is purposeful.
• 20:15
SPEAKER_05: We'll talk about briefly what that what was the conversation, like the trope of like.
• 20:19
SPEAKER_02: But I mean, there so there is a trope, the kill your gays.
• 20:23
SPEAKER_02: But I think that the the the trope of killing the gay characters, it's similar to um the the trope of like killing the black people for oh sure.
• 20:33
SPEAKER_02: It's the same thing where the issue with that is that you're not making characters.
• 20:37
SPEAKER_02: You have a black person or a queer person for diversity, and then you're killing them.
• 20:41
SPEAKER_02: They're there to support the main character and not be characters of their own.
• 20:46
SPEAKER_02: For sex, that is not how the queer character is in this is cool, and the fact that perhaps a queer character dies, it's horror.
• 20:56
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 20:56
SPEAKER_02: To me, that that doesn't fit the trope.
• 20:58
SPEAKER_05: Everyone, no one is safe in horror.
• 21:00
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 21:01
SPEAKER_02: I saw who was it who posted that long thread on Twitter?
• 21:04
SPEAKER_02: Sam Winman on Twitter, he posted a thread debating this.
• 21:09
SPEAKER_02: Like he had the other view that I did.
• 21:12
SPEAKER_02: Uh he thinks that it was playing to the trope, and he put a very convincing argument, his thread was a very convincing argument.
• 21:18
SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I mean, definitely go seek that out on Twitter.
• 21:20
  SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't agree with what he said.
• 21:23
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, just Sam Weinman at Sam Wineman if you want to read it.
• 21:27
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so even though we disagree, I think that uh a a strength of the haunting of Bly Manor and the Hill House is that there's a lot of room for debate.
• 21:35
SPEAKER_02: It gives you some rich content to discuss there.
• 21:38
SPEAKER_02: So check it out, see what you think for yourself.
• 21:41
  SPEAKER_05: Cool.
• 21:41
SPEAKER_02: What do you want to talk about?
• 21:42
SPEAKER_05: How about the Mortuary Collection?
• 21:45
SPEAKER_05: Should we get into that?
• 21:46
  SPEAKER_05: Now streaming on Shudder.
• 21:47
  SPEAKER_02: Yes.
• 21:48
SPEAKER_05: Big, big hype around it.
• 21:49
SPEAKER_05: I know I remember hearing about it.
• 21:51
SPEAKER_05: I think last year I premiered maybe at Fantasia or Fantastic Fest or something like that.
• 21:55
SPEAKER_05: And I never hear, oh my god, the Mortuary Collection.
• 21:57
SPEAKER_05: I'm hearing about it for like a year now.
• 21:59
SPEAKER_05: Um Now I think basically it it's another horror and photology.
• 22:05
  SPEAKER_05: I mean it's not it's not Halloween theme, but it's good f it's a good spooky season movie.
• 22:09
  SPEAKER_05: It's it's fun.
• 22:10
SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, it's also like gothic.
• 22:12
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it it kind of re kinda reminds me a little bit like of of Phantasm, a little a tiny little bit.
• 22:17
SPEAKER_05: They take a place in a funeral park.
• 22:19
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, scary big scary man, the tall man.
• 22:21
SPEAKER_02: Like I like, you know, yeah, it's gloomy, it's yeah, kind of drew.
• 22:24
SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say grammy, it's not, it's very clean looking.
• 22:26
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, it's not, it's not gritty looking, um, which is something I didn't like about it.
• 22:30
SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, I mean I think you were warmer on it than I was, but I I still thought it was fine.
• 22:34
SPEAKER_05: I still would say recommend it.
• 22:35
SPEAKER_02: Um I hadn't heard of it until this year.
• 22:37
SPEAKER_02: I just suddenly saw like an explosion of everybody being like the mortuary collection on Shudder, it's so good.
• 22:42
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, oh, what's that?
• 22:44
SPEAKER_02: Um I'm pretty um I'm pretty hit or miss on shutter content.
• 22:48
SPEAKER_02: Um they have not been really doing it for me lately.
• 22:51
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 22:52
SPEAKER_02: But um this, I yeah, I so I mean maybe it was the low expectations, but it really um kind of wowed me a little bit.
• 23:00
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 23:00
SPEAKER_02: I think there's kind of so like you said, it's an anthology.
• 23:04
SPEAKER_02: It's four different stories that's in kind of like uh inside of there's like one thread, like a one big story.
• 23:10
SPEAKER_05: Just like the best anthologies do, they it's always it comes back to a circle.
• 23:15
SPEAKER_02: And what I would say, my criticism is that I loved all of the stories, and I did not like the the big story where they're telling the stories.
• 23:24
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I didn't like the the one character, I didn't like her arc.
• 23:27
SPEAKER_02: I was like, uh Oh, I didn't like the mortician.
• 23:29
SPEAKER_05: Oh, you like the mortician?
• 23:30
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay.
• 23:30
SPEAKER_05: So I was uh for me it was the girl.
• 23:32
SPEAKER_05: I was like, oh, is that where it went up?
• 23:34
SPEAKER_02: Made me cringe, made me uh I just didn't care.
• 23:37
SPEAKER_02: And then there's like this um this strange finale of the whole movie that I just didn't understand.
• 23:42
SPEAKER_02: I was like, am I missing something?
• 23:44
SPEAKER_02: Is there something profound happening?
• 23:47
  SPEAKER_05: I'd have to re-watch it again.
• 23:48
SPEAKER_05: I was just kind of like, okay, I mean, but um, but the stories themselves were definitely subversive.
• 23:52
SPEAKER_05: The one was really fun.
• 23:53
SPEAKER_05: Um I kind of had I was like darkly laughing at the one with uh a frat boy getting his Jew, a very misogynistic frat boy getting his Jew.
• 24:01
SPEAKER_05: And I was like, oh.
• 24:02
  SPEAKER_02: Yes.
• 24:02
  SPEAKER_02: There's one, and I like there's a diversity of horror here.
• 24:05
SPEAKER_02: The first story is like a creature story, the second one is like a feminist done much better than the crap legacy.
• 24:14
SPEAKER_02: Uh then there's so that's like a body horror, and then there's um a more psychological, like grief horror.
• 24:22
SPEAKER_05: There's a yeah, there's a guy who with a sick partner, and um and then what's what's the last one is a slasher.
• 24:29
  SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, that's right.
• 24:30
SPEAKER_05: That's the one that ties everything.
• 24:31
SPEAKER_02: And that one uh I enjoyed while it was happening, but thinking back on it, I don't think it works.
• 24:37
SPEAKER_02: I think it's I think there are a lot of flaws in that last story.
• 24:41
SPEAKER_05: I didn't love it, but again, it's what was your favorite of the story.
• 24:45
SPEAKER_05: Of all the stories, um, I think I probably enjoyed the frat boy story the most.
• 24:50
SPEAKER_05: I think because it was just like, I was like, where is this going?
• 24:52
SPEAKER_05: I I thought it was gonna be something that it wasn't quite, like with with the when the girl he hates the one girl, I was like, oh, this is gonna be like a serial killer story, and I was like, nope, that's not what it was.
• 25:02
SPEAKER_02: I liked what I loved about that one is that it just kept going further and further.
• 25:06
SPEAKER_02: And I kept thinking like they're gonna have to back off because I don't think they can show.
• 25:09
SPEAKER_02: And then they showed they showed things I didn't think they were gonna show.
• 25:12
  SPEAKER_05: And hilarious.
• 25:14
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it made me laugh, also made me shiver and cross my legs.
• 25:18
SPEAKER_02: Um but my favorite was the third story about the uh partner who's in a coma.
• 25:25
SPEAKER_02: Yeah and a guy struggling with like, you know, he loves her, but she's not who she is anymore.
• 25:30
  SPEAKER_05: Sure, yeah.
• 25:31
SPEAKER_02: And I liked it just because I mean, I kind of in as a general rule hate these horrors that are just like trying to make you so uncomfortable because someone's just in a shitty situation.
• 25:41
  SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
• 25:42
SPEAKER_02: But I thought that this had like this weird like nightmare psychosis that was happening the whole time that was like really intriguing for me.
• 25:50
SPEAKER_02: And then bringing it back to Black Swan, there's just kind of this like beautiful, transcendent end to it where it's just like this gorgeous, like uh cinematic moment.
• 25:59
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, where it's like the music, the effects, the visuals, there's this great, like um practical creature.
• 26:06
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 26:06
SPEAKER_02: Oh, I it was a very yeah cinematic.
• 26:09
  SPEAKER_05: I hear that.
• 26:09
SPEAKER_05: And that that's a that's a very common issue, is when people fall into a coma or when people get really sick, or it's like when they have no autonomy over their own lives.
• 26:17
  SPEAKER_05: You're like, what do I do?
• 26:18
  SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
• 26:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it would be tough.
• 26:19
SPEAKER_05: It's best to do it for pets, even should I put my pet down if she gets sick.
• 26:23
SPEAKER_05: It's like it's all this stuff that's you know, real life issues.
• 26:26
  SPEAKER_05: I get that.
• 26:26
  SPEAKER_05: I totally get that.
• 26:27
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 26:27
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think that ac I think that the whole collection is really well done.
• 26:32
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's just little nitpicks.
• 26:34
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's fine.
• 26:35
  SPEAKER_05: It's um I mean I i we're gonna do smash or slash now.
• 26:39
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 26:39
SPEAKER_02: Well, what'd you give it?
• 26:40
  SPEAKER_05: I give it a smash.
• 26:41
SPEAKER_05: It's like I said, it's not like it's not like an enthusiastic smash, but yeah, I check it, I check it out.
• 26:46
SPEAKER_02: I can give it a pretty enthusiastic smash.
• 26:48
  SPEAKER_02: I think it's worth watching.
• 26:49
SPEAKER_02: There are a few things on Shedder right now that are definitely worth your 30-day trial or even worth buying a month's subscription.
• 26:55
SPEAKER_02: Um, I think Mortuary Collection is one of those.
• 26:58
SPEAKER_05: Scary scale, sorry, we'd have to do scary scale.
• 27:00
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, scary scale.
• 27:01
SPEAKER_02: I'd give it a um just over average.
• 27:04
  SPEAKER_02: I'd give it a three, maybe.
• 27:05
SPEAKER_02: Just because like I think it makes a good effort at being disturbing and being yeah, yeah.
• 27:10
SPEAKER_02: And so I wouldn't put it uh to me, like a 2.5 is just like yeah, it's there, middle of the road.
• 27:15
SPEAKER_02: And this is like slightly more.
• 27:16
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'd I'd say two and a half.
• 27:18
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 27:18
  SPEAKER_05: It's there's there's moments.
• 27:20
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I wasn't jumping out of my seat.
• 27:21
  SPEAKER_05: No.
• 27:22
SPEAKER_05: I don't think I think it was more meant to be fun than like spooky fun.
• 27:25
SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
• 27:25
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 27:26
SPEAKER_02: So, like we mentioned up top, uh, you and I had the pleasure, the pleasure of tuning into the Nightstream Film Festival, which uh very cool.
• 27:37
  SPEAKER_05: Very cool.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_05: So Nightstream is a conglomerate of Popcorn Frights, the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans, which is so much fun.
• 27:44
SPEAKER_05: It was so disappointing, couldn't go this year.
• 27:46
SPEAKER_05: Uh Brooklyn Horror, which we that's where you and I met.
• 27:49
SPEAKER_05: And it was great a year ago, great people, wonderful fest.
• 27:53
SPEAKER_05: Uh North North Bend Film Fest and Boston Underground.
• 27:58
  SPEAKER_02: So cool logo.
• 28:00
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
• 28:01
SPEAKER_05: So uh yeah, what do we want to talk about first?
• 28:04
SPEAKER_02: Well, I think let's start just like overall.
• 28:07
SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think that right now we're in an interesting situation because, like, first of all, I think it's really cool that they did this because those were festivals that couldn't have run.
• 28:16
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 28:16
SPEAKER_02: And so they all kind of came together to make a ritual festival for us.
• 28:22
SPEAKER_02: And um, so I love that.
• 28:24
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, kudos.
• 28:27
SPEAKER_05: We're clapping for you guys.
• 28:29
SPEAKER_02: Now, the hard thing, and like we said, accessible.
• 28:32
SPEAKER_02: Any of you could have listened.
• 28:33
SPEAKER_02: I was tweeting about it, so if you don't follow scary movie pod, you snoozed and you lose because anybody could have gone.
• 28:39
SPEAKER_02: It wasn't too expensive and it was accessible.
• 28:42
SPEAKER_02: You didn't have to go anywhere except your little steals, too.
• 28:44
SPEAKER_05: They had Run, yes, which you you're gonna review this month, right?
• 28:49
  SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
• 28:49
  SPEAKER_05: Run.
• 28:50
SPEAKER_05: They had which I haven't watched yet, but they had Honeydew, which that's what that one's also a pretty big buzzy one.
• 28:57
SPEAKER_02: I think that the difficult thing though is that one, you know, last year we went to one of these festivals.
• 29:03
SPEAKER_02: It's not that it's so difficult to replicate.
• 29:08
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 29:08
SPEAKER_02: I think there have been lots of memes about like how you're on the Zoom, you're drinking, having a good time, the Zoom turns off, and you're just alone in your underwear town.
• 29:16
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 29:16
  SPEAKER_02: You know?
• 29:17
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 29:18
  SPEAKER_02: And so it's hard.
• 29:19
SPEAKER_02: And another thing that this film festival, I guess we're getting critical off the bat.
• 29:24
SPEAKER_02: Another thing that it was a little bit missing for me is that the screenings.
• 29:29
SPEAKER_02: I mean, maybe I was just missing out because we were press.
• 29:32
SPEAKER_02: I don't think the screenings had any sort of I think you could just rent them and watch them.
• 29:36
SPEAKER_05: Actually, I think a few of them were like you had to buy tickets for a showing of it and everyone would watch, but I don't think it was a chat thing, though.
• 29:44
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
• 29:45
  SPEAKER_05: There's no communal.
• 29:46
  SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
• 29:47
SPEAKER_02: That's and uh that's something that I wish they could have found a way to replicate.
• 29:50
SPEAKER_02: Even if it was a chat that you could turn off.
• 29:52
SPEAKER_02: Because I would have had it on, I would have chatted with people.
• 29:55
SPEAKER_05: Like a Netflix party watching, like that kind of thing.
• 29:57
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I hear you.
• 29:58
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I mean again, I think a really admirable effort, and they did a lot of events that they tried to do.
• 30:04
SPEAKER_02: The opening party, they had some Zoom aerial dancers.
• 30:08
SPEAKER_02: Um again, I was just sitting on my desk chair in my underwear eating like popcorn.
• 30:14
SPEAKER_05: They had Barbara Crampton and Larry Fessenden do like a cocktail party kind of.
• 30:17
SPEAKER_05: And that was very good.
• 30:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they were very fun.
• 30:19
SPEAKER_05: They were just panels were cool.
• 30:21
SPEAKER_02: I Barbara and Larry, they just seemed like typical like parents.
• 30:25
SPEAKER_02: They were they didn't understand how Zoom was really working, and they were just like confused, just like yelling at each other the whole time.
• 30:33
  SPEAKER_02: I loved it.
• 30:34
SPEAKER_05: I watched the one Toasting Mick Garrett, horror icon.
• 30:38
SPEAKER_02: Um, it was Ryder at Hocus Pocus.
• 30:41
  SPEAKER_02: Can you believe?
• 30:42
SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, um, and many other things.
• 30:44
SPEAKER_05: Uh he's yeah, incredible horror icon.
• 30:47
SPEAKER_05: Um, it was kind of just like a fun, it was like Mike Flanagan was there.
• 30:51
SPEAKER_05: Um it was uh Ernest something.
• 30:54
SPEAKER_05: He's no not quite, but he's dead.
• 30:58
SPEAKER_05: He's dead, but he the director of um director writer of Tales for the Hood, I believe.
• 31:04
SPEAKER_05: Um who else was there?
• 31:05
SPEAKER_05: It was a whole bunch of people.
• 31:06
SPEAKER_05: John Carpenter popped up at one point.
• 31:08
SPEAKER_05: It was I mean, it was a whole panel, and it was just all there's all shooting the shit and talking and coasting Nick Garris.
• 31:13
  SPEAKER_05: That was fun.
• 31:14
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 31:14
  SPEAKER_02: Um was it live?
• 31:16
SPEAKER_05: It I think it was.
• 31:18
SPEAKER_05: That one was live, I think, and I watched it.
• 31:20
SPEAKER_05: Um, skipping out though, and that's what I missed a lot of stuff and I was like, Well, I mean, yeah, that's unfortunate, but I think that's really cool.
• 31:28
  SPEAKER_02: And there's like opportunity.
• 31:29
SPEAKER_02: Like, if somebody was like, Hey John Carpenter, will you come to New York to go to Brooklyn horror film?
• 31:35
  SPEAKER_02: No, he would not.
• 31:35
  SPEAKER_02: He'd be like, No.
• 31:36
SPEAKER_02: But if somebody says, Will you hop on Zoom for 10 minutes?
• 31:39
  SPEAKER_02: Of course.
• 31:39
  SPEAKER_05: Yep.
• 31:40
  SPEAKER_05: It was lovely, yeah.
• 31:41
SPEAKER_02: So I think that um that's cool.
• 31:44
SPEAKER_02: There were also I was there were quite a few pre-recorded events, and that wasn't so hot.
• 31:48
  SPEAKER_02: I wish that wouldn't have happened.
• 31:50
SPEAKER_05: I did watch the one with women in horror.
• 31:52
SPEAKER_05: I watched a little bit of it.
• 31:53
SPEAKER_05: It was it was fine.
• 31:55
SPEAKER_05: You know, it it was kind of like women in horror.
• 31:57
SPEAKER_05: They they talked about themselves pretty much about um films.
• 32:00
SPEAKER_05: They were the women in horror.
• 32:04
SPEAKER_05: But it was a nice, it was a nice diverse, you know, group of I movie uh short films I never heard of that I wanted to check out.
• 32:09
  SPEAKER_05: So that was cool.
• 32:10
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I went to a um there was a a midnight um shorts showing um The I Slicer.
• 32:19
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, cool.
• 32:20
  SPEAKER_02: Short.
• 32:20
  SPEAKER_02: Um I haven't seen that yet.
• 32:22
SPEAKER_02: Well, it was like it was hosted by ISlicer.
• 32:25
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_02: And so it was like there was a chat running on the side and they were showing some horse shorts.
• 32:30
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, horse shorts.
• 32:32
  SPEAKER_02: Shorts.
• 32:32
SPEAKER_02: And there's a great one about like a red lobster commercial that like went awry.
• 32:38
SPEAKER_02: And I actually, I mean, I feel like I've I've saw some good things.
• 32:42
SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, I feel like the way it was set up, I didn't get to watch all of that.
• 32:45
SPEAKER_05: And plus it was October, it was a really busy month for us, and I think I just didn't get to indulge as much as I would have liked to.
• 32:50
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is a bummer because last year at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, I was seeing like six movies a day.
• 32:54
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was great.
• 32:56
SPEAKER_02: And so, but I think briefly let's run through a couple of good ones.
• 33:00
  SPEAKER_05: Sure.
• 33:01
SPEAKER_02: Now, these first this first one, I don't I looked to see if there was any information I could find on like a release date.
• 33:07
SPEAKER_02: Couldn't find it, but I I'm confident this is one that will be gracing our screens because it was it was very good.
• 33:14
  SPEAKER_02: I loved it.
• 33:15
SPEAKER_02: It was called Rose Plays Julie.
• 33:17
  SPEAKER_02: Oh.
• 33:18
SPEAKER_02: And it was this, um, it was like a revenge story.
• 33:23
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 33:24
SPEAKER_02: But I I actually was a little confused on why it was at a horror film.
• 33:29
SPEAKER_05: It wasn't genre, you said, right?
• 33:31
SPEAKER_02: So it was revenge, which is typically a horror genre subgenre, yeah.
• 33:37
SPEAKER_02: Uh, but it was played almost like a straight drama.
• 33:40
SPEAKER_02: Like it was like a girl who's in veterinarian school, so you saw some nice guts through some there was like a cow that was taken apart, it was gross.
• 33:48
SPEAKER_02: Um, and she's finding her birth mom, and then you find out that her birth was under some not great circumstances.
• 33:59
  SPEAKER_05: That's intense.
• 33:59
SPEAKER_02: Yes, it is it's weird because that is intense, but the movie plays it all so straight, interesting, and just like almost deadpan, even from some of and the performances were good, but like deadpan is like a style to where it's like I was seeing these insane things happening, and I was just like, all right, that is happening, and then we just and so yeah, it was a very like calm movie for what it's about, and it was very beautiful.
• 34:26
SPEAKER_02: Like I said, the performances, particularly the lead whose name is Ann Skelly, she plays Rose.
• 34:32
SPEAKER_02: I'd never heard of her.
• 34:33
  SPEAKER_02: Incredible.
• 34:34
SPEAKER_02: Okay, she was so good, she had a lot of and the moments of emotion, like I said, it was kind of deadpan, but then there would be these breakout moments where somebody would scream or something.
• 34:42
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 34:43
SPEAKER_02: Uh, because you know, emotional topic.
• 34:44
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 34:45
SPEAKER_02: Um, it made it kind of stand out and be extra visceral.
• 34:49
  SPEAKER_02: Cool.
• 34:49
  SPEAKER_02: Loved that.
• 34:50
SPEAKER_05: Um, one that I know you and I both enjoy was anything for Jackson.
• 34:54
  SPEAKER_02: Yes, insane.
• 34:55
  SPEAKER_05: Fun, really, really fun.
• 34:57
SPEAKER_05: Um, the couple, it's like an old it's about an older couple that are grieving their grandson.
• 35:05
  SPEAKER_04: Yes.
• 35:05
SPEAKER_05: And they want to bring him back in a way, which I'm not gonna spoil, but they want to bring him back somehow, and they're they're desperate, which grief does.
• 35:12
  SPEAKER_05: Grief makes you desperate.
• 35:14
  SPEAKER_05: It's really fun, it's darkly funny.
• 35:16
SPEAKER_05: Um the the two leads, the couple, the older couple, were incredible.
• 35:22
SPEAKER_02: So I'm not sure what the distribution is for this movie either, but again, I am confident it was bonkers.
• 35:27
SPEAKER_02: I'm confident that somebody will pick it up.
• 35:30
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 35:30
SPEAKER_02: Um, because it would be a great home release.
• 35:33
  SPEAKER_05: Definitely.
• 35:34
  SPEAKER_02: Um, it's insane.
• 35:35
SPEAKER_02: I found the two leads, the two grandparents.
• 35:39
  SPEAKER_02: Yes.
• 35:40
SPEAKER_02: I wanted them to be my grandparents.
• 35:42
  SPEAKER_02: Delightful.
• 35:43
  SPEAKER_05: They are delightful.
• 35:44
SPEAKER_02: Of course, they're evil in the movie to some extent, but we're like the movie for them.
• 35:48
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a great commentary uh not commentary, uh comedy, and that like the sympathy that it shows for them is great.
• 35:56
SPEAKER_02: And even with the kind of victim protagonists, like they even become friends.
• 36:01
SPEAKER_05: You never see older people represented in Satanism, we'll just say.
• 36:07
SPEAKER_02: And even like this movie could have been about parents instead of grandparents.
• 36:12
SPEAKER_02: And it was grandparents, yeah.
• 36:14
SPEAKER_02: They both um they both are kind uh the the actors um aren't prominent actors.
• 36:23
SPEAKER_02: Um the grandmother is played by Sheila McCarthy, who is in The Day After Tomorrow, and Die Hard 2.
• 36:30
  SPEAKER_02: Can you believe that?
• 36:31
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 36:32
SPEAKER_02: And then the grandfather is played by um Julianne Richings, who is the weird janitor in Urban Legend.
• 36:42
SPEAKER_05: I've actually never seen Urban Legend confession.
• 36:46
  SPEAKER_02: What?
• 36:47
SPEAKER_02: No, I just Even I've seen Urban Legend.
• 36:49
  SPEAKER_05: It's just another 2000s.
• 36:53
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Parker's acting like it's a masterpiece.
• 36:55
  SPEAKER_05: It's not.
• 36:55
  SPEAKER_05: I know it was.
• 36:58
SPEAKER_02: But I think they were just the the performances, they were just like off the rails, looked like they were having the best time.
• 37:04
SPEAKER_02: And anytime it looks like performers are having a good time, I'm having a good time.
• 37:08
  SPEAKER_02: Definitely.
• 37:08
SPEAKER_02: And I have to say the end didn't do it for me.
• 37:11
SPEAKER_02: It was a little, you know, quick and easy done.
• 37:14
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 37:14
SPEAKER_02: But uh the build to get there was super fun.
• 37:17
SPEAKER_05: Some uh some fun scares, some scary scares the tell in the dark kind of inspired scares.
• 37:23
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, some ghosts in there that really freaked me out.
• 37:25
  SPEAKER_05: It's a really fun movie.
• 37:26
SPEAKER_05: I I we've both dug that one and uh go ahead, go with another one.
• 37:31
SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, my last one that that I is a somewhat positive review from the festival is Lucky, which is coming out on Shudder next year.
• 37:42
SPEAKER_02: They just did a secret screening of it at the Shudder did a a festival for Halloween, and so they did a screening of Lucky, and I saw it at the festival, and it's another feminist um horror about a woman who is being stalked by like kind of a he's wearing a mask, but he's like a faceless everyman, and she doesn't know why it's happening every day, and no one else seems to be able to like get a hold of him.
• 38:11
SPEAKER_02: She's the only one who's really seeing him, yeah.
• 38:13
SPEAKER_02: Um, I think that towards the end, as with some of these, the metaphor is just too heavy-handed, it's just a little in your face, and it kind of sacrifices the horror of the situation to be like, all right, are you listening?
• 38:28
  SPEAKER_02: Take notes, men.
• 38:29
SPEAKER_02: And I'm all for taking notes, I'm all for learning, but it I don't know, it was just a little shallow for me.
• 38:35
  SPEAKER_05: Gotcha.
• 38:36
SPEAKER_02: And the it was never particularly scary.
• 38:39
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 38:39
SPEAKER_02: Now, the star of it, Brie Grant, also wrote it, and she was great.
• 38:46
  SPEAKER_05: She always is, yeah.
• 38:47
SPEAKER_05: She's kind of like a I'd never seen her.
• 38:49
SPEAKER_05: She's kind of a little bit of a indie horror, you know, upcoming icon, I would say.
• 38:54
  SPEAKER_05: She's yeah, she's she's doing a lot of stuff.
• 38:56
SPEAKER_05: She's actually has another movie which I haven't seen yet called 12 hours shift, which got also is getting a lot of good reviews.
• 39:02
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so she's, you know, good for her.
• 39:03
SPEAKER_05: We we we're we're we stand, but yeah.
• 39:05
SPEAKER_02: So she wrote it and she stars, and I think she's great.
• 39:08
  SPEAKER_02: I really do.
• 39:09
SPEAKER_02: Just wasn't Yeah, it just like I don't know.
• 39:11
SPEAKER_02: It's another thing where if it had been like an episode of television or in an anthology, it would have been great.
• 39:17
SPEAKER_02: But as a whole movie, it was bad.
• 39:19
SPEAKER_02: And the biggest crime of all, it's the it's titled Lucky.
• 39:23
SPEAKER_02: Lucky by Britney Spears makes no appearance.
• 39:36
  SPEAKER_02: No appearance.
• 39:37
SPEAKER_02: Don't get that song stuck in my have a trailer that is word montage to Lucky.
• 39:46
  SPEAKER_02: I'll reevaluate.
• 39:47
  SPEAKER_02: I'll watch it.
• 39:48
  SPEAKER_02: I'll come back, I'll rave.
• 39:51
  SPEAKER_05: Can you imagine?
• 39:51
SPEAKER_05: The budget probably can't even come up.
• 39:53
SPEAKER_02: The whole budget, they gotta double it for that song.
• 39:56
SPEAKER_05: Get it in the trailer.
• 39:57
SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, that would just be incredible.
• 39:59
SPEAKER_02: So yeah, uh, it's a meh from me.
• 40:02
SPEAKER_02: But I mean, if it's on Shudder and you have Shudder, I don't think it's I think it's still worth watching.
• 40:07
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 40:07
SPEAKER_02: Uh but I would multitask while I watched it.
• 40:10
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's uh I'm I'm not gonna go too deep into this one, but there if you liked Relic, um, I know Parker wasn't like the biggest fan of Relic, but there's a movie You were you were lukewarm, but there's a drag me.
• 40:22
  SPEAKER_05: There's a The truth hurts, baby.
• 40:26
SPEAKER_05: But the there's a movie from Nightstream called Reunion.
• 40:29
SPEAKER_05: Cool movie, a lot of mother-daughter dynamics, a lot of you know, what's happening here, creepy kind of slow burn.
• 40:36
  SPEAKER_05: I it's solid.
• 40:38
SPEAKER_05: I'd say it was didn't blow my mind, but it's solid.
• 40:41
SPEAKER_05: I think it's I check it out if it comes on streaming.
• 40:43
SPEAKER_02: It's you know, you were excited for that one.
• 40:45
SPEAKER_05: I was excited for that one because I like that kind of horror.
• 40:47
SPEAKER_05: I like that kind of family slow burn, like what's what's who has secrets and who's the hereditary queen.
• 40:54
  SPEAKER_05: Hereditary queen times three.
• 40:56
SPEAKER_05: But yeah, but no, nothing can be hereditary, let's be honest.
• 41:00
SPEAKER_05: But no, it's just it's I would say it's more relic than hereditary.
• 41:03
SPEAKER_05: It's more like okay, what's this, what's what's going on between sell it by comparing it to her?
• 41:08
  SPEAKER_05: No, I'm not selling.
• 41:09
  SPEAKER_05: I'm just saying it's it's fine.
• 41:10
  SPEAKER_05: It's fine.
• 41:11
  SPEAKER_05: She's fine.
• 41:12
SPEAKER_05: Okay, that's all I gotta say about it.
• 41:14
  SPEAKER_02: Reunion.
• 41:14
  SPEAKER_05: Reunion, she's fine.
• 41:15
  SPEAKER_02: Reunion.
• 41:16
  SPEAKER_02: That's it.
• 41:17
  SPEAKER_05: That's it.
• 41:18
  SPEAKER_02: That's it.
• 41:18
  SPEAKER_02: Alright.
• 41:18
  SPEAKER_02: Well, that's you didn't sell me.
• 41:20
SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, your fingers are freezing.
• 41:22
SPEAKER_02: I do want to So I mean, between us we saw quite a few things.
• 41:26
SPEAKER_02: And all of these things are things that will be coming out soon, I'm confident.
• 41:30
SPEAKER_02: There's no way like anything for Jackson's not gonna be coming out.
• 41:33
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 41:34
SPEAKER_02: Um so would you give overall Nightstream a smash or a slash?
• 41:40
  SPEAKER_05: I mean, I gotta give it a smash.
• 41:42
  SPEAKER_05: It's I didn't see enough.
• 41:44
SPEAKER_05: I wish I could have that's my own fault though, but you guys are doing a great job.
• 41:48
SPEAKER_05: Thanks for letting us cover the movies.
• 41:50
SPEAKER_05: And um I mean, you can't say no to a film festival like that's accessible, guys.
• 41:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, take advantage of this stuff.
• 41:57
SPEAKER_02: I would give it a smash too, because just any effort to try and like bring us a little joy to bring people together.
• 42:04
SPEAKER_05: And I think guess what?
• 42:05
SPEAKER_05: Get used to it, because I think next year is not gonna be much different, sadly.
• 42:08
SPEAKER_02: So I'm hoping maybe by October.
• 42:11
SPEAKER_02: Maybe, maybe, maybe I'm not hopeful for the summer.
• 42:15
SPEAKER_02: No, but hopefully by now, next October.
• 42:17
  SPEAKER_02: Fingers crossed.
• 42:18
  SPEAKER_04: Hopefully.
• 42:19
SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, I applaud Night Stream, I think.
• 42:22
SPEAKER_02: And they really they pulled it off as smoothly as I can imagine it happening.
• 42:26
  SPEAKER_05: Yes.
• 42:27
SPEAKER_02: Well, Julianne, is there anything else that you watched in October that you want to give a quick thumbs up shout out to?
• 42:33
SPEAKER_05: I do want to shout out.
• 42:34
SPEAKER_05: I got I had an early access screening to this movie called Kindred.
• 42:39
  SPEAKER_02: Kendred.
• 42:40
SPEAKER_05: By IOC Midnight, which Parker will be reviewing next week.
• 42:44
  SPEAKER_05: Girl.
• 42:44
  SPEAKER_05: Wow.
• 42:45
SPEAKER_05: I recommend it to him.
• 42:47
