- 0:00How do you know you're letting go versus thinking that you are?
- 0:05I always use this analogy of, here, let me just use this object.
- 0:09So, if I'm grabbing onto something, and I've just got this thing here I'm grabbing.
- 0:13If I'm grabbing onto it, right, and let's say if this thing heats up like, you know, I don't know, like a hot rock or something.
- 0:21Volcanic rock. Not a good idea to pick up a hot volcanic rock, but here.
- 0:25Let's say, you know, I picked it up and I'm holding onto it.
- 0:30to heat up some somehow magically just heats up gets really hot I'm still
- 0:34hanging on to it well what's gonna happen is I get really kind of
- 0:36uncomfortable and it's gonna burn and at some point unless I want to just burn my
- 0:42hand completely you know we're built to just let go the body knows how to let go
- 0:47the nervous system knows how to let go and letting go is letting the grip go
- 0:53okay there you go just dropped everything that's what happens when you
- 0:56drop your thing right it's like there's a difference what's the difference one is holding on
- 1:03gripping the other is let go so on a physical level right sometimes doing it on a physical
- 1:15level can feel much more tangible so in our yoga practice for example the hardest posture is that
- 1:22last posture that we do even though everyone wants to comes for it it's
- 1:26normally the people that don't want to do any of the postures they come for the
- 1:29Shavasana the last posture they're normally the ones that don't want to do
- 1:32Shavasana because when we get to Shavasana and you know we're there for a
- 1:35few minutes that's when people in a yoga class are like how much longer you know
- 1:38and they're like eyes are darting around because we cannot sit still and the
- 1:42hardest part is to sit with ourselves and to let go so letting go one of the
- 1:48practices you know I'll just share it here I've shared it before it's like you know when you're
- 1:53lying on the ground and you're consciously scanning like as if like a laser beam scanning
- 1:58right from crown of the head down to your feet and consciously letting go of muscle groups so you'll
- 2:05feel the body actually letting go letting go letting go it's also it's a practice that you
- 2:09can do if you struggle to go to sleep so people say to me like I can't sleep I don't know and most
- 2:15of the time I've noticed I don't normally have this problem of sleeping because generally within
- 2:19three seconds before someone can finish saying the word sleep I'm already asleep so it's like
- 2:25they get to SLE before they get to the next EP I'm already asleep but sometimes I've had the
- 2:30problem of not being able to sleep and I notice when I scan my body I realize that there's tension
- 2:36I'm holding like where like you know maybe it's the neck or the shoulders or my jaws my face or
- 2:41and I'm not completely relaxed in my body.
- 2:43It's that same kind of physical action, you could say,
- 2:47I'm just making it tangible, of releasing, of letting go.
- 2:50The difference between letting go is one is free, is expansive,
- 2:55and the other is contracted.
- 2:58How do you know whether you've let go or not?
- 3:01If you feel a contraction emotionally, physically,
- 3:05will reflect emotionally as well, so the body will reflect it.
- 3:08that contraction to me in my own body and my emotions says that I've not let go because I'm
- 3:16still gripping onto the thing it's the same thing with like let's say if I'm angry or resentful at
- 3:21someone or something it's still there I'm still some part of me is hanging onto it and it's a
- 3:28completely different feeling when I've let it go I'm free from it there's an expansiveness of freedom
- 3:36when I've let go.
- 3:38So I use that hot rock,
- 3:40which I've dropped a thing now,
- 3:42but it's like hanging on.
- 3:44So resentment, for example,
- 3:46anger or hate, for example,
- 3:47it's like,
- 3:48there's a quote years ago I read
- 3:52that says,
- 3:52hate is like the poison that you drink
- 3:55and hope the other person would die.
- 3:59Anger, resentment is like
- 4:01hanging on to that hot rock.
- 4:03the thing that we hang on to
- 4:05so often it's not just anger and resentment
- 4:09so much of what we hang on to
- 4:11is what makes us dis-eased
- 4:14the diseases that we have so often
- 4:17is the tension that we are holding and hanging on to
- 4:21not just on a physical level
- 4:23because the physical reflects the emotional
- 4:25and that which we haven't let go of
- 4:27that which we are hanging on to and contracted
- 4:30when you're contracted, when you're stressed, when you're tense
- 4:35energy cannot flow through
- 4:37and that stagnation of energy
- 4:40the lack of flow or just flow not being possible
- 4:47becomes an unease and becomes a dis-ease
- 4:50and when we take the dis-ease and give it a name
- 4:54and call it a condition
- 4:57and give it some tablets so that we don't feel it
- 5:00It's just a wonderful way of dealing with it.
