- 1:13Laura: Today's story comes from Efik, people of southeastern Nigeria.
- 1:19Laura: Nigeria is a country in West Africa, and the Efik people have passed down stories, knowledge, and traditions for generations.
- 1:30Laura: This story is sometimes called Why the Sun and Moon Live in the Sky.
- 1:36Laura: It is a kind of story people tell to explore a big question about the world.
- 1:41Laura: Why does the sun shine high above us?
- 1:45Laura: Why does the moon glow in the night sky?
- 1:49Laura: Long ago, storytellers created imaginative answers to questions like these.
- 1:54Laura: Their stories were not science textbooks.
- 1:57Laura: They were ways of wondering together, remembering ideas, and sharing something surprising around the fire.
- 2:06Laura: So settle in, explorers, and listen carefully.
- 2:11Laura: Every time Water asks, "May we come in?"
- 2:15Laura: I want you to answer for Sun and Moon.
- 2:18Laura: You will say, "Come in."
- 2:21Laura: But pay attention.
- 2:23Laura: You may decide the Sun and Moon need a different answer before they do.
- 2:29Laura: Ready?
- 2:30Laura: Let's begin.
- 2:34Laura: Long, long ago, Sun, Moon, and Water all lived on the Earth.
- 2:39Laura: Sun and Water were very good friends.
- 2:42Laura: Sun often visited Water.
- 2:45Laura: Whenever Sun arrived, Water welcomed him with the gentle swish and splash of moving waves.
- 2:55Laura: They talked beside the river.
- 2:58Laura: They laughed as little fish darted between the reeds.
- 3:01Laura: They watched turtles lift their heads above the surface and then disappear with a tiny bloop.
- 3:08Laura: But Water never visited Sun, not once.
- 3:14Laura: Sun began to wonder why.
- 3:17Laura: One day while the two friends were talking, Sun finally asked.
- 3:22Sun: Water my friend?
- 3:23Sun: I visit you all the time.
- 3:25Sun: Why have you never come to my home?
- 3:27Laura: Water rippled thoughtfully.
- 3:30Water: I would like to visit you, son, but my family is very large.
- 3:35Water: If I come to your home, all my people will need to come with me.
- 3:40Laura: Sun looked across the water.
- 3:43Laura: There were fish beneath the surface.
- 3:46Laura: There were turtles near the shore.
- 3:48Laura: There were creatures hiding in mud, creatures resting on rocks, and creatures swimming where Sun could not see them.
- 3:58Laura: Water continued.
- 3:59Water: Your home is much too small for all of us.
- 4:04Water: If you truly want me to visit, you will need to build an enormous home.
- 4:10Laura: Sun beamed.
- 4:12Sun: I can do that.
- 4:13Sun: I will build the biggest home you have ever seen.
- 4:17Laura: Water gave one more warning.
- 4:20Water: Think carefully, my friend.
- 4:22Water: There are more of us than you realize
- 4:25Laura: But Sun had already hurried home to share his plan with Moon.
- 4:31Sun: Moon, Moon,
- 4:32Laura: Sun called.
- 4:34Sun: Water has agreed to visit us!
- 4:36Sun: We only need to make our home much, much bigger.
- 4:40Laura: Moon smiled brightly.
- 4:42Laura: "Then we had better start building."
- 4:49Laura: Sun and Moon worked all day.
- 4:52Laura: They made the walls higher.
- 4:54Laura: They stretched the roof wider.
- 4:56Laura: They added room after room after room.
- 5:00Laura: Let's help them build.
- 5:03Laura: Pretend you have a hammer.
- 5:05Laura: Tap above you.
- 5:06Laura: Tap beside you.
- 5:08Laura: Tap down low.
- 5:10Laura: Tap, tap, tap.
- 5:12Laura: Now stretch your hands as far apart as they can go.
- 5:16Laura: Make that house enormous.
- 5:20Laura: Sun stepped back and admired their work.
- 5:23Sun: This must be big enough
- 5:25Laura: He said.
- 5:26Laura: The next morning, Sun invited Water and all Water's people to visit.
- 5:31Laura: Soon, Sun and Moon heard something outside.
- 5:36Laura: Water stopped at the entrance.
- 5:38Water: We have arrived.
- 5:40Water: May we come in?
- 5:41Laura: What do Sun and Moon say, explorers?
- 5:45Brooklyn and Maya: Come in!
- 5:48Laura: A sparkling stream flowed through the doorway.
- 5:51Laura: Fish swam inside, flicking their shiny tails.
- 5:55Laura: A crab scuttled across the floor.
- 5:58Laura: A turtle paddled slowly behind.
- 6:02Laura: "Excuse me," said the turtle.
- 6:06Laura: "Coming through.
- 6:10Laura: Slowly.
- 6:12Laura: Very slowly."
- 6:16Laura: Soon the water covered Sun and Moon's feet.
- 6:19Laura: Water called from the doorway,
- 6:22Water: More of my people are waiting.
- 6:24Water: May we come in?
- 6:26Laura: What do Sun and Moon say?
- 6:29Brooklyn and Maya: Come in!
- 6:31Laura: More water rushed inside.
- 6:34Laura: More fish followed.
- 6:36Laura: Tiny fish, striped fish, wide fish, wiggly fish.
- 6:41Laura: A puffer fish puffed himself into a round ball.
- 6:46Laura: Don't mind me," it squeaked, "I always look like this when a party gets crowded."
- 6:52Laura: The water rose to Sun and Moon's knees, then their waists.
- 6:58Laura: Sun and Moon climbed onto two chairs.
- 7:01Laura: Water asked again.
- 7:03Water: More of my people are waiting.
- 7:06Water: May we come in?
- 7:07Laura: Now, what would you say?
- 7:09Laura: Would you still say come in, or would you say, "Wait, we need a new plan"?
- 7:19Brooklyn and Maya: We need a new plan!
- 7:21Laura: Sun looked at Moon.
- 7:23Laura: Moon looked at Sun.
- 7:25Laura: They probably should have listened to you.
- 7:28Laura: Instead, they called...
- 7:34Laura: water poured into every room.
- 7:37Laura: It swirled around the tables.
- 7:39Laura: It splashed against the windows.
- 7:41Laura: Sun and Moon climbed onto the tallest shelf.
- 7:45Laura: The water rose higher and higher and higher.
- 7:51Laura: The water has almost reached the roof.
- 7:55Laura: Sun and Moon scrambled outside and climbed on top of their house.
- 7:59Laura: Below them, water and all water's creatures filled the enormous home.
- 8:05Laura: Water called one final time.
- 8:08Water: Sun, Moon, all of my people are still waiting.
- 8:13Water: May we come in?
- 8:14Laura: Sun and Moon looked down at their crowded house.
- 8:18Laura: They looked at the water rising around the roof.
- 8:21Laura: They looked up.
- 8:23Laura: Above them stretched the wide open sky.
- 8:27Laura: There was only one place left to go...
- 8:30Laura: up!
- 8:33Laura: Sun rose into the sky, shining brightly as he climbed.
- 8:38Laura: Moon followed, glowing with a soft silver light.
- 8:42Laura: Water covered the house and flowed across the land below.
- 8:46Laura: And according to this epic story, Sun and Moon have lived in the sky ever since.
- 8:53Laura: What a visit!
- 8:54Laura: Sun wanted to welcome his friend.
- 8:57Laura: That was kind.
- 8:59Laura: Moon worked hard to help prepare.
- 9:01Laura: That was generous.
- 9:03Laura: But Water had explained exactly what would happen.
- 9:08Laura: "My family is enormous," Water warned.
- 9:12Laura: And each time the water rose, Water stopped and asked whether it was safe to continue.
- 9:19Laura: Sun and Moon kept saying yes, even when their home was clearly full.
- 9:26Laura: Have you ever said yes to something before you understood how big it would be?
- 9:32Laura: Maybe you agreed to clean your room and then remembered just how many toys were on the floor.
- 9:39Laura: Maybe you promised to carry every grocery bag at once and ended up wobbling through the doorway trying to balance everything.
- 9:47Laura: Sometimes our plans are not quite as large as our enthusiasm.
- 9:53Laura: That brings us to our Friendship Bridge.
- 9:58Laura: Let's cross our Friendship Bridge.
- 10:01Laura: People around the world have created stories to explain the things they noticed in nature.
- 10:08Laura: Why do certain animals look the way they do?
- 10:11Laura: Where did thunder come from?
- 10:14Laura: Why are there stars in the sky?
- 10:17Laura: These stories are different because they grew from different communities, landscapes, languages, and imaginations.
- 10:24Laura: But they began with something we all share, wonder.
- 10:29Laura: Someone looked at the sun and moon and asked, "Why are they up there?"
- 10:34Laura: Then a storyteller answered, "Let me tell you what happened when Water came to visit."
- 10:40Laura: What's inside our Belief Backpack this week?
- 10:46Laura: Before we go, let's open our Belief Backpacks.
- 10:49Laura: Remember, we are not packing a real object.
- 10:53Laura: We are carrying an idea that can help us after the story ends.
- 10:58Laura: Today's Belief Backpack takeaway is listen carefully before you say yes.
- 11:03Laura: Sun heard Water's words, but he did not fully listen to the warning.
- 11:11Laura: Listening means more than staying quiet while someone talks.
- 11:15Laura: It means thinking about what their words are telling us.
- 11:19Laura: When someone tells you that a plan may not work, pause and think.
- 11:25Laura: When you realize that something is too much, it is okay to speak honestly and make a new plan.
- 11:33Laura: Kindness is not always saying yes.
- 11:37Laura: Sometimes kindness sounds like, "Wait, let's figure this out together."
- 11:44Laura: Tonight, if you see the sun sinking toward the horizon or the moon glowing above you, remember the story of the biggest, splashiest visit ever.
- 11:55Laura: Picture the fish swimming through the doorway.
- 11:59Laura: Picture Sun and Moon perched on the roof.
- 12:02Laura: And remember the question that begins so many wonderful stories.
- 12:07Laura: Why?
- 12:09Laura: Until next time, this has been Laura from Faithfully Explore.
- 12:13Laura: Stay curious, stay kind, and keep faithfully exploring that wonderful world around you.
