Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: What's going on? Everyone?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Emily ABOUDI here you are listening to five Minute Friday
- 0:25Speaker 2: from Hurdle.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hi, Hello, how are we?
- 0:29Speaker 2: You know it's funny as I asked that question, I
- 0:32Speaker 2: think about the answers that I've been giving to it
- 0:34Speaker 2: this week. Obviously, when you go into a store, you
- 0:38Speaker 2: talk to a barista, you check into a workout class,
- 0:42Speaker 2: it's always Hi, how are you? And this week was
- 0:46Speaker 2: the first time in a long time that I stopped
- 0:51Speaker 2: and answered that question authentically. I knew that saying something
- 0:55Speaker 2: like good for me this week didn't really feel right.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I walked into my yoga studio and the woman asked me, Hi,
- 1:05Speaker 2: how are you? And I said good? And then I
- 1:08Speaker 2: took a pause, and I took a backstep and I said, actually,
- 1:14Speaker 2: not so good, but I'm here, And that felt right
- 1:19Speaker 2: for me. I went to dinner on Wednesday night and
- 1:23Speaker 2: the man that was taking our order when I said
- 1:26Speaker 2: how are you, he didn't even lie, he was like, well,
- 1:30Speaker 2: And there was just something that didn't need it to
- 1:32Speaker 2: be said. And so I want to hold space for everyone,
- 1:37Speaker 2: regardless of how they feel right now, and know that
- 1:40Speaker 2: whatever it is that you are feeling, I can promise
- 1:44Speaker 2: you that you certainly are not alone in that. On Wednesday,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I woke up and I couldn't really walk well. And
- 1:52Speaker 2: it's not because I ran a marathon last Sunday. It's
- 1:55Speaker 2: because on a Tuesday morning, I was cleaning up around
- 1:59Speaker 2: my apartment and I nailed my toe into the couch.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It was throbbing and immediately turned like a deep shade
- 2:10Speaker 2: of purple, and I couldn't put shoes on, and when
- 2:14Speaker 2: I went to bed on Tuesday night, it kept me
- 2:17Speaker 2: awake in the evening. I woke up on Wednesday and
- 2:20Speaker 2: I was convinced it had to be broken, like I
- 2:23Speaker 2: had never experienced a pain like this, And as the
- 2:28Speaker 2: day went on, I had to leave a house. At
- 2:31Speaker 2: one point couldn't put on a sneaker. It hurt too much.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Put on a pair of Birkenstocks because they were the
- 2:36Speaker 2: least offensive option when about my business came home.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Later that evening, I.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Again went to try to put a sneaker on and
- 2:47Speaker 2: was able to get it on with a lot less
- 2:49Speaker 2: pain than earlier in the day, and slowly I realized that, Okay,
- 2:57Speaker 2: maybe it's not as bad as I thought it was
- 2:59Speaker 2: going to be, and understandably. So when I woke up
- 3:03Speaker 2: on Wednesday, I was catastrophizing it. I was like, what's
- 3:07Speaker 2: going to happen here? The worst case scenario, et cetera,
- 3:11Speaker 2: et cetera. And granted, sometimes that catastrophizing can be warranted
- 3:17Speaker 2: and certainly understandable. But as I sit here now another
- 3:22Speaker 2: twenty four hours later, recording this podcast, I have some
- 3:26Speaker 2: perspective on what I thought was god the most frustrating thing.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I was like, I'm going to run a marathon and
- 3:34Speaker 1: then stubbing.
- 3:35Speaker 2: My toe, AKA what I thought was breaking my toe
- 3:38Speaker 2: is going to be the thing that takes me out.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The couch is going to be the thing that takes
- 3:42Speaker 1: me out.
- 3:43Speaker 2: All of this to say, sometimes you just got to
- 3:46Speaker 2: take a beat, right, don't jump to the worst possible conclusion.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I was literally.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Sitting there thinking about how I was going to go
- 3:54Speaker 2: about the next month of travel and work things, and
- 4:00Speaker 2: where I should go to a walking clinic, and should
- 4:03Speaker 2: I be buying a boot and all of the things
- 4:06Speaker 2: gestures loosely here behind my microphone.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And what if I didn't do that?
- 4:13Speaker 2: What if instead I thought about the best case scenario,
- 4:17Speaker 2: What if instead I just took a deep breath. I
- 4:22Speaker 2: think I know actually that that can really help with
- 4:28Speaker 2: a lot right now. And so my prompt for you
- 4:33Speaker 2: this week, instead of a prompt, really is maybe just
- 4:37Speaker 2: urging you to do the same. To inhale for four seconds,
- 4:41Speaker 2: to hold for four seconds, to exhale for four seconds,
- 4:46Speaker 2: to hold for four seconds. Do four rounds of that
- 4:50Speaker 2: and see if it helps with however it is that
- 4:53Speaker 2: you're feeling right now. And now a listener question. Hey, Emily,
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'm a long time hurdle listener, but this is my
- 5:01Speaker 2: first time writing in to seek advice. I'm wondering if
- 5:04Speaker 2: you can offer any insight into how you balance your
- 5:06Speaker 2: bodies need to rest with using running as a part
- 5:09Speaker 2: of your mental health care and self care when you're
- 5:11Speaker 2: going through a really difficult time. I lost my mom
- 5:14Speaker 2: recently and it's been incredibly challenging. I'm seeing a therapist
- 5:18Speaker 2: and leaning on my friends and family, but I've also
- 5:20Speaker 2: been running more than ever to help me move through
- 5:22Speaker 2: the loss. It's the only thing that feels somewhat good
- 5:25Speaker 2: or natural right now. Generally, I don't think run streaks
- 5:28Speaker 2: are a great idea. I respect the bodies need to
- 5:30Speaker 2: rest and recover, and a run streak just isn't something
- 5:33Speaker 2: I'm trying to achieve here Mentally, I just need to
- 5:36Speaker 2: hit the pavement. Though. Have you ever encountered something similar
- 5:39Speaker 2: in your relationship to running? How did you help yourself
- 5:42Speaker 2: strike a balance when you did? Thanks for the good
- 5:45Speaker 2: you put out into this community, and I'm grateful for
- 5:47Speaker 2: your advice. Kimberly. Wow, can I relate to this? Kimberly,
- 5:51Speaker 2: Thanks for sharing. I'm so sorry to hear that you're
- 5:54Speaker 2: going through a hard time, and I appreciate your sentiments
- 5:57Speaker 2: around the concept of a run streak knowing the importance
- 6:02Speaker 2: of rest. With that said, I think everybody's different. I
- 6:06Speaker 2: don't think that there is much quote unquote danger in
- 6:11Speaker 2: moving a bit in the every day, especially if you're
- 6:15Speaker 2: running in a way that's super recreational. But you know
- 6:19Speaker 2: you and your body, and I too, am not going
- 6:21Speaker 2: to sit here and encourage you to run every day
- 6:25Speaker 2: as a coping mechanism. So what I will say is,
- 6:29Speaker 2: maybe there's another way that you can move your body
- 6:31Speaker 2: that you can find some of that same solace in.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Maybe there is, And this is something that's in my routine,
- 6:38Speaker 2: a specific yoga class on Sundays that feels like a treat,
- 6:42Speaker 2: or a time that you meet a friend to go
- 6:45Speaker 2: for a spin glass on Tuesdays, or even just heading
- 6:50Speaker 2: out for a nice long walk and ending at a
- 6:53Speaker 2: coffee shop or a destination that makes you feel a
- 6:58Speaker 2: little bit of warmth inside. I ensure you that there
- 7:01Speaker 2: are alternate movement practices that you can implement into your
- 7:05Speaker 2: regular schedule that can bring you some of the same
- 7:08Speaker 2: light that running does. But in order to do that,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you need to be open to the fact that yes,
- 7:15Speaker 2: they may feel different at first, and also they can
- 7:19Speaker 2: be just as good. Meet yourself with where you're at,
- 7:22Speaker 2: be open to trying something new, and I promise that
- 7:25Speaker 2: your movement routine can both vary a bit and you'll
- 7:30Speaker 2: start to like it. I'll be thinking of you. For
- 7:33Speaker 2: anyone else who has a listener question, I am all Ears.
