- 0:00Welcome to another episode of 6 Figure Secrets for Fractional
- 0:03Experts. My name is Bradley Jacobs.
- 0:05I'm your host, the founder and CEO of Mylands.
- 0:09And today we're going to talk about playing big.
- 0:12And frankly, it's the only way to do it.
- 0:15And we're going to talk about why.
- 0:17Why playing small is actually a recipe for disaster.
- 0:22A recipe for, I don't say failure, but your business is
- 0:25going to be so much more challenging to run.
- 0:28It's going to be smaller, it's going to burn you out.
- 0:32And that's the opposite that we want to happen.
- 0:34Before I get into the episode, I want to talk about quickly just
- 0:37our LinkedIn product. It's really been amazing helping
- 0:40people become thought leaders on LinkedIn in way less time,
- 0:44genuine, authentic content that resonates with your ideal
- 0:47customer. So if you're looking to attract
- 0:49customers with ease, come check us out, sign up.
- 0:52We're accepting beta customers as we speak.
- 0:55All right, let's dive in. First, let's talk about what
- 0:58playing small actually looks like.
- 1:01What it looks like is saying yes to basically any project that
- 1:05comes your way. Playing small is agreeing to
- 1:08rates that are lower than really feels comfortable, lower than
- 1:12your value, or lower than you're just really looking to earn.
- 1:16It could just be like, I want to make more.
- 1:19Playing small means not doing active business development.
- 1:22It could be not posting content on LinkedIn, not doing any kind
- 1:26of outreach, not doing lots of networking, whether it's live
- 1:29events or in communities where your ideal customer might be.
- 1:34Playing small is also a mindset. It's like how you talk about
- 1:38your business, right? If you say, oh, I'm a consultant
- 1:41and I do XYZ versus I'm a business owner that makes
- 1:44impactful change. It could be working for free to
- 1:48quote, get experience. And the last thing I'll say,
- 1:51it's not making time for the move the needle business
- 1:56activities like, you know, the things you need to do, but
- 1:58you're not making the time because we all have the time.
- 2:02You're not making the time to do the things your business needs.
- 2:06And maybe because you just don't like to or you're scared or
- 2:10there's some sort of subconscious programming that's
- 2:12holding you back. But the end of the day, you're
- 2:14not doing those activities. And, and so that combines into
- 2:18you playing small. And what ends up happening is
- 2:21you probably have a number of clients that aren't paying you
- 2:25that much. And so you're super busy.
- 2:27You're not making the money you want to be making.
- 2:30You're kind of burnt out and you don't really see a path out.
- 2:34You're like, how do I do this? And you kind of think like this
- 2:37is the only way it can be done. One of the ways that we get into
- 2:40this is when we rely only on referrals and we don't ask for
- 2:45enough money from our clients. We're kind of in this like, I
- 2:48don't know how to go, go get new clients.
- 2:50So I kind of have to take what falls in my lap, what comes my
- 2:53way. And I don't have enough
- 2:55experience in my head, right? That's not true.
- 2:57But I'm thinking I can't really charge more.
- 3:00Like this is all these clients can really afford.
- 3:02So I'm stuck taking like 2345K retainers.
- 3:05So I have three clients. I make 15K, maybe 12 KA month
- 3:09and I'm like, shoot, like I'm not making what I was making in
- 3:11corporate. I'm not making nearly what
- 3:14Bradley talks about or what other people talk about.
- 3:16Like what am I doing wrong? And you feel stuck.
- 3:20And the reality is we do this. I'll just throw myself in there.
- 3:24We do this because it feels safe, right?
- 3:28Like when we were in corporate, most people that have gone out
- 3:31on their own, they had a job in corporate or tech company or
- 3:35even a start up at some point. But there was this kind of like
- 3:38safety built in, right? Like if the company didn't do
- 3:41well, it wasn't your fault. You had very clear roles and
- 3:45responsibilities of like what you needed to do.
- 3:48You got feedback, you had managers, you had teammates,
- 3:51people to fall back on. You had there was basically so
- 3:54much built in infrastructure. And so there was a lot of safety
- 3:59built in. And when we go out on our own,
- 4:02we pretty much lose all of that safety.
- 4:04Right now, we're totally on our own.
- 4:07If we succeed, it's because of us and if we fail, it's because
- 4:09of us. And so there's a normal
- 4:12inclination to not take the big risk because risk feels like
- 4:18rejection or the potential of rejection.
- 4:21And so we don't want to quote UN quote get rejected.
- 4:24We don't want to hear the no, we don't want to quote UN quote
- 4:26fail. And so we play small and we keep
- 4:29it safe. And we end up in this scenario
- 4:31that I described earlier that 100% leads to burnout or worse,
- 4:36you're like, make the decision that I can't do this.
- 4:39And so then I need to go back to corporate or reevaluate.
- 4:42Do I need to go find a job or find clients that frankly just
- 4:47that I don't even want to work work with?
- 4:50And I want to paint a scenario for you.
- 4:52There's this scenario where you have one consultant who is in
- 4:57the category I'm describing. They're kind of playing it safe.
- 4:59They take clients that fall in their lap.
- 5:01They're a little scared to charge too much because what if
- 5:04they're told you know, you're not worth it and they're not
- 5:06really doing a lot of outreach or business development or
- 5:08LinkedIn content creation? That's consultant A and then you
- 5:14have consultant B and consultant B is like has no ego, no fucks
- 5:19given, and is playing the biggest game that they could
- 5:22possibly play. Meaning they're doing outreach,
- 5:25they're creating content, they're asking for rates that
- 5:28are way higher than the market average.
- 5:30They are pushing the needle. They are testing this niche and
- 5:34then that niche and they are asking for big proposals and
- 5:37they are saying no to any kind of small client.
- 5:39They're like, Nope, I don't work with anyone less than 7 KA
- 5:43month. And they are just like balls to
- 5:45the wall outreach and they have No Fear.
- 5:49Like let's just assume there's zero fear of rejection or
- 5:52failure. So you have consultant A who's
- 5:55kind of playing it safe and allowing things to come in their
- 5:57lap and consultant B who's balls to the wall, no ego, No Fear,
- 6:01just like going for it. And it's pretty obvious, right?
- 6:05If you had to pick which consultant is going to be more
- 6:08successful in their in their business, you'd almost guarantee
- 6:12consultant B. And when I lay it out in the A
- 6:15verse B, it sounds pretty damn obvious, right?
- 6:18The person that's going balls to the wall and gives no fucks
- 6:21about potentially being rejected, they're going to crush
- 6:25it, right? Like they're going to get told
- 6:26no a lot. Don't get me wrong, they
- 6:28absolutely are. But as they get told no and they
- 6:31let it roll off their back, they're almost definitely going
- 6:36to get yeses. And when they do get those
- 6:38yeses, they're big yeses, right? It's a 20 KA month client, a 15
- 6:42KA month client, a 30 KA month client.
- 6:45So instead of having the like, you know, 3 clients at 5 KA
- 6:49month that gets you 15K. They can have one client that's
- 6:5215K, which means if they have three, it's 45 K.
- 6:55They would easily be making triple what consultant A would
- 6:59be making. And I lay this out to not if
- 7:02you're a consultant A right now, not to make you feel bad is to
- 7:06say that there is another way. And I'm not saying it's easy
- 7:10because if it were easy, everybody would do it.
- 7:12Certainly not easy. But there's a piece that can
- 7:16change the entire equation. And it is all around mindset,
- 7:21right? It's who we are, right?
- 7:22It's always been AB do have like the person I'm being results in
- 7:27what I do and then I have right? So we get to be embodied in
- 7:33Consultant B and so those take the mindset shift.
- 7:37So we're going to talk about those mindset shifts and how
- 7:40that translates to tangible action items for your business
- 7:45that's actually going to set you up for success.
- 7:47So the biggest thing, the most important thing is realizing the
- 7:52value that you bring. When you are so incredibly
- 7:56cemented in the value that you bring as a consultant to a
- 7:59business, then you are so much more likely to say no to clients
- 8:04that undermine your value and only say yes where the value is
- 8:07truly there. And this is a really easy
- 8:09exercise because every single employee, and we're going to
- 8:13talk about employees for a second, every single employee at
- 8:16a company, they drive more value than their salary.
- 8:20I'm going to say that one more time.
- 8:22Every employee at a company drives way more value then their
- 8:27salary. And the reason is because you
- 8:30wouldn't be hired if that weren't true, right?
- 8:32A business makes money and if they are hiring people that
- 8:35don't drive value. And look, there's exceptions to
- 8:37this of course, but the point is that you have learned a skill
- 8:41set that drives way more value than you've been paid.
- 8:45And as a consultant, you have the opportunity to capitalize on
- 8:48a higher share of that value because you are the one setting
- 8:53your own rate. And if we just take a really,
- 8:55really simple example, right, you could talk about if you're
- 8:58in marketing or sales or business development or any kind
- 9:01of top of funnel growth function, you know, revenue OPS,
- 9:04CHCRO and anything like that. If you are adding value that
- 9:09acquires X more customers, those customers depending on of course
- 9:13like the LTV and you know Enterprise Oregon B, you know, B
- 9:16to B or B to C, whatever it is. But we know those customers are
- 9:19worth an insane amount to the company, right?
- 9:22Let's say every single time you move the needle on acquiring
- 9:26234510 more customers or 100 or 1000 or 10,000 customers, you
- 9:31are probably adding 10s of thousands, hundreds of thousands
- 9:34or millions of dollars in value to that business.
- 9:38So can you really think about like, oh, I'm going to take
- 9:40$3500 a month for from the business when I'm adding $40,000
- 9:46a month to the business, Like really just think about that for
- 9:49a second. So you don't need to go prove
- 9:53yourself anymore, right? You've already done that.
- 9:56You already had the experience. And so it's really just knowing
- 9:59fully embodied. It's one thing to think, it's
- 10:02another thing to really have it believe it in your body that the
- 10:06value that you add is so much more than the price that you
- 10:09charge. And it makes it a hell of a lot
- 10:11easier to actually go after it and frankly say no very easily
- 10:16and respectfully when it's not there.
- 10:18This same principle also applies to doing business development.
- 10:22Because when you have that in, in your body knowledge of the
- 10:26value that you add, you're like, okay, now I want to find clients
- 10:29that have this problem so I can go add this value to them,
- 10:33right? It's not about like, oh, I need
- 10:34to go make this amount of money. I need, I need, I need, it's
- 10:38actually what do you need you as in the business, right?
- 10:41I want to find businesses that have the problem that I solve
- 10:44because one, I love solving those problems, 2, they need me.
- 10:483, I have fun doing it for this is my business, right?
- 10:51Like that's what I want to be doing.
- 10:53And so there's kind of this like beautiful value exchange where I
- 10:56get to solve a problem, I still create way more value than I get
- 10:59paid. And I'm hitting my financial
- 11:02goals right. I'm having fun in the process.
- 11:04So in order for us to do this, we have to truly understand our
- 11:08value. And then the next most important
- 11:11thing is being OK with the possibility.
- 11:16And frankly, it's going to happen.
- 11:18Being OK with being told either no, being rejected in some kind
- 11:22of way, or like the worst, worst, worst thing I can really
- 11:26think of happening is someone calls you crazy or you, you
- 11:28know, you don't add that much value or whatever it is.
- 11:31And look, if you talk to 50 people and 40 of them tell you
- 11:34that you don't add that much value.
- 11:37OK, good feedback. And you get to kind of iterate
- 11:39on your offer or go get some more experience or whatever it
- 11:42is. But if one person, two person,
- 11:44two people, three people, four people say that out of 50, you
- 11:47get to throw it out. You're like, OK, thanks for the
- 11:50feedback. Not a fit here.
- 11:51No worries, right? But we have to be willing to put
- 11:54ourselves out there. We have to be willing to get
- 11:56rejected. Maybe look, quote UN quote
- 11:58stupid. We have to be willing because
- 12:01not everyone's going to be a fit.
- 12:02That's just the end of the day. So if I were to ask you, are you
- 12:06willing to get told no, let's say 50 times to build the
- 12:10business of your dreams? Because my guess is if you
- 12:13reached out to 500 people, right, you might get told no,
- 12:18we're totally rejected by even half of them, right?
- 12:20You know, obviously you don't need 500.
- 12:22So simple example, if you reach out to 100 and you got told no,
- 12:25we're rejected by 50 of them, but fifty of them said yes, and
- 12:29then you had clients forever. Would you be OK with that?
- 12:33And my guess is all of you would be.
- 12:36You're like, OK, I can get told no to build a business in my
- 12:38dream 50 times no problem. So being willing to be told no
- 12:43after you know your value. And then the third piece is you
- 12:48being willing to say no. Like when those clients do fall
- 12:52in your lap that just aren't a fit from the value, the niche,
- 12:56the money, the time, the scope, whatever it is.
- 13:00Being honest with yourself of does this get me to my goal?
- 13:04Does this get me closer? And if it doesn't get me closer,
- 13:07then I get to be really disciplined and say no.
- 13:09Like this isn't a fit. So once we have these three
- 13:13things down, we know our value. We are willing to hear no and
- 13:18maybe even look silly along the way.
- 13:20And we're willing to say no. Then the world opens up for us
- 13:25because then we're not scared of doing outreach.
- 13:27We're not scared of asking for our prices to be high.
- 13:29We're not scared of creating content on LinkedIn and looking
- 13:32quote UN quote silly. We're not scared of saying no to
- 13:35a small retainer that just doesn't meet our goals.
- 13:38And we're willing to play big. And I would ask, you ask
- 13:42yourself every single week, what are the biggest things, most
- 13:46important things that I could do for my business that will move
- 13:50the needle towards my goal? And of course, you have to know
- 13:52your goal to do this right? But every week, do it on the
- 13:55weekend. Do it Sunday night, not Monday
- 13:57morning when you're starting to get in the thick of things.
- 14:00Do it the weekend before and say, like, what are going to be
- 14:03the biggest things to move the needle?
- 14:05And who am I, right? You can even like reiterate it
- 14:07every day. I'm Bradley.
- 14:09I'm a badass entrepreneur building awesome products and
- 14:12community and Information Services for amazing
- 14:16fractionals. I know how much value I bring.
- 14:18I love this space and I'm going to be a risky, bold, powerful
- 14:22entrepreneur this week. Boom.
- 14:24And all of a sudden I'm like Crate.
- 14:25I can tackle the world. Anyone can tell me anything and
- 14:28it's fine. I'm going to be unshaken in
- 14:31whatever and I'm of course going to go get feedback of like
- 14:33what's working and what's not working and iterate.
- 14:35But it's not going to I'm not going to make it about me,
- 14:38right? I'm not going to have a massive
- 14:39ego hit. All right, I can talk about this
- 14:42forever, but we like to keep these episodes to about 15
- 14:45minutes. So I'm going to wrap it up here.
- 14:47This is such a powerful topic and I really hope you took
- 14:51something away from this that actually allows you to move
- 14:54forward in a more powerful, in a bigger and a riskier way.
