- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real.
- 0:11Clients facing. Genuine.
- 0:13Issues. Brought to you by The
- 0:14Hypnotherapist, Demanded by celebrities, CEOs and even
- 0:18royalty, Adam Cox. These recordings took place live
- 0:22from Adam Smith in London's world famous Harley Street.
- 0:29So get yourself comfortable and enjoy today's episode of The
- 0:33Hypnotist. Do you ever feel anxious or
- 0:42nervous when seeing doctors or going to a clinic, having things
- 0:47like blood tests or blood pressure tests or any other
- 0:50health checks? This white coat syndrome can
- 0:54actually cause anxiety where people feel nervous about either
- 0:58the test or the people at the doctors or even the place like a
- 1:01hospital. And because of that, the anxiety
- 1:04can then actually change certain readings.
- 1:06And blood pressure is one of those readings that it can
- 1:08change. If you're feeling really, really
- 1:10anxious, you're going to get a different blood pressure result
- 1:13than if you're feeling very calm and relaxed.
- 1:16And this can create a self fulfilling prophecy because most
- 1:18people deem certain health check results as indicative of their
- 1:24health, not indicative of their emotions.
- 1:27And I've worked with quite a few people that have a fear
- 1:30specifically of blood pressure tests, and it tends to come from
- 1:34two different places. 1 is that either they've had an experience
- 1:37where the reading wasn't what they wanted it to be and then
- 1:41concerned faces of nurses really freaked them out and caused them
- 1:44to panic a bit. Or someone they knew had a blood
- 1:49pressure check and then died within a few months of that.
- 1:53And then there is this attribution error where they
- 1:56start thinking that it was the test that killed them rather
- 2:00than the test actually figuring out some kind of health problem
- 2:05that was underlying. The client that I was working
- 2:08with here had a blood pressure result in a very extreme
- 2:14situation many years before, and that led them to believe that
- 2:18then the actual blood pressure test was the problem rather than
- 2:25anything else. So this session is going to be
- 2:29useful for anyone with that particular feeling.
- 2:32So I would recommend that you find a quiet, comfortable place
- 2:34where you're not going to be disturbed.
- 2:36Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 3:05you breathe in, breathe in that calm, relaxing feeling.
- 3:14And as you exhale, I want you to allow yourself to release any
- 3:26feelings of worry, stress, or tension.
- 3:31Just allow the possibility that these feelings aren't real,
- 3:38they're just echoes, and allow the echo to feel like it's
- 3:44leaving your body in that outward breath.
- 3:52As you breathe in and breathe out with your eyes closed, I
- 3:56want you to focus on a point on your forehead, almost like your
- 4:04eyes are looking upwards into your skull, focusing, fixating
- 4:10on that point. Allow yourself to temporarily
- 4:16strain your eye muscles to focus on that point and then take an
- 4:24even deeper breath in, still focusing on that point.
- 4:30And as you exhale, just release all the tension in your eyes and
- 4:36in doing so feel a deeper level of relaxation and then focus on
- 4:44a point in your chin, almost like your eyes are looking
- 4:49through your jaw straight to that chin.
- 4:54Feel the tension. Breathe in a deep breath of
- 4:58relaxation, and as you exhale, release all of that tension and
- 5:06just feel that relaxation spreading down into your jaw,
- 5:09your neck, your shoulders, down your arms.
- 5:14That's in. As you breathe in and breathe
- 5:19out, maybe you can notice a gentle wave of calm, almost like
- 5:28it's spreading through you as you breathe out.
- 5:34The deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you feel, and the more
- 5:39relaxed you feel, the deeper you breathe.
- 5:43And as your body relaxes, your imagination awakens.
- 5:50And I want you to imagine floating back, back in time, but
- 5:55also through space, to observe a version of you looking daunted,
- 6:04even anxious, perhaps in the front seat of a car.
- 6:10You're just the observer. But I want you to observe
- 6:16something powerful. I want you to observe that even
- 6:21though you were anxious or cautious, you took action.
- 6:31And by taking action, just observe how quickly that anxiety
- 6:38went away because action creates experience.
- 6:45Experience creates familiarity but also evidence.
- 6:52Evidence that you can do that thing, creating a wonderful
- 6:56feeling of self efficacy. Trust in your ability to do the
- 7:03thing. And intuitively you know that if
- 7:07you avoided doing that thing, it would be more and more
- 7:11challenging each time you attempted it.
- 7:15But you didn't. In that moment was courage.
- 7:22So rewind it to the point of that courage and step into that
- 7:27version of, you know that the anxiety was real, but the
- 7:33willingness to take action exceeded it.
- 7:36And that is the courage. And I want you to identify
- 7:43perhaps a location of that feeling of courage.
- 7:49If anxiety is in the gut and stress is sometimes around the
- 7:54neck or the shoulders, courage also has a home.
- 8:01And I want you to see if you can locate that feeling of trusting
- 8:07that things will be fine. And if you can find that feeling
- 8:12of courage, or your intuition has a hunch of where it may be,
- 8:17just point to that location. That's it.
- 8:21Then just relax your arms. But imagine if courage had a
- 8:28colour, what colour would it be? And if courage had a shape, what
- 8:33shape it would be? And then imagine a
- 8:37three-dimensional shape of that colour in that location.
- 8:42And notice that you can amplify the courage if you make the
- 8:48colour brighter, the shape bigger.
- 8:53But also notice if the shape moves, pulsates, rotates,
- 8:57vibrates, and whatever it's doing, make it doing a little
- 9:01bit more. Give a sound to that courage and
- 9:08perhaps even a phrase that you would link with courage.
- 9:14Let's do it. For many people is the
- 9:18representation of courage, knowing that there are risks,
- 9:25insecurities or fears, but choosing to do it anyway.
- 9:31And if you could imagine that colour of that shape moving in
- 9:37that way at that brightness, perhaps with a glow around it.
- 9:43Let me know about nodding your head.
- 9:46That's it. And notice that when you utilize
- 9:54that courage, how quickly those fears went away.
- 10:00Because most fears are unfounded.
- 10:05Some people think of fear as an acronym FEAR False evidence that
- 10:15Appears real, and sometimes it's circular.
- 10:21The anxiety itself is used as justification of the validity of
- 10:25the fear. But what if real anxiety is
- 10:32based on that false evidence or that false evaluation?
- 10:39Some people spend their whole lives avoiding something, then
- 10:43if they just did it once with a sense of courage, the whole
- 10:49House of Cards would come crumbling down.
- 10:54And maybe there's other times, previous events that once felt
- 10:59unfamiliar, but you did the thing, it became familiar, and
- 11:06now you do it without thinking. So with every breath, just
- 11:13imagine exhaling any unnecessary tension.
- 11:21And I want you to think of those old association stories or
- 11:24meanings connected to blood pressure tests that the test
- 11:33itself tells you if you're healthy or not, in danger or
- 11:38not. I want you to get a feeling that
- 11:43you know from all these tests you've done yourself that a test
- 11:48can show a false reading, not based on your health, but based
- 11:56on your emotions. And as you start to let go of
- 12:02those old stories and associations, notice your body
- 12:09settling into a state of calm curiosity.
- 12:13And I want you to think of a time perhaps when you've been in
- 12:23an airport and you've seen those moving walkways, kind of like
- 12:30escalators, but on a flat surface.
- 12:39It moves smoothly and it always goes forward.
- 12:43And when you're standing on one of those, you don't have to rush
- 12:48or strain or even walk. It just carries you naturally
- 12:53forward. Imagine being on a long walkway
- 12:58like that, and I want you to get a feeling that there's nothing
- 13:06you need to do. Just being there makes you move
- 13:11forward. And perhaps you can imagine
- 13:19every now and then you pass small milestones, perhaps
- 13:24memories or moments where you once faced something new, did
- 13:29the thing, and came out stronger.
- 13:35Each moment on this moving walkway reminds you that you can
- 13:39adapt, you can learn, and those things that once felt daunting
- 13:46don't have to remain that way. And as this walkway moves
- 13:53forward, imagine it taking you to a place where you feel calm
- 14:00and safe. Maybe a place you know well, but
- 14:05a place where you can explore your thoughts and feelings with
- 14:11a new perspective. And I want you to imagine in
- 14:18this place, in this calm, safe space, I want you to imagine
- 14:24something simple, A home blood pressure test, not as a
- 14:33challenge, but just as practice. Another moment of curiosity, not
- 14:39even needing courage. Now it's just practice, a shot
- 14:43to nothing, an opportunity to learn.
- 14:48And there was a time that doing this by yourself would have
- 14:52caused anxiety, but you did it in safe places with curiosity
- 14:58until all of that anxiety went away.
- 15:00And that's because when you test it on yourself, it was just
- 15:08practice. And what if that's true even if
- 15:13someone else is doing the testing?
- 15:20I want you to get a feeling whether you do the test or
- 15:22someone else does. It's just frequency repetition.
- 15:31Practice equals familiarity, Nothing to lose and everything
- 15:38to gain. I want you to get the feeling
- 15:43then they're just numbers. Whether it's high or low,
- 15:49accurate or not. It's just feedback, a data
- 15:54point, a moment of progress in the real journey of
- 16:01desensitisation where every attempt is one more step up the
- 16:09ladder on your own game board of confidence.
- 16:19For a while, you thorn, One bad event could take you all the way
- 16:25back down to square one. But that's not true.
- 16:32I can't undo the progress you've already made.
- 16:38I want you to feel that you doing things that gives a vote
- 16:46of confidence in your future self is a ladder.
- 16:50And whatever happens in that test is also another ladder.
- 17:00You're either desensitizing yourself or taking a big step
- 17:06forward by feeling confident and calm.
- 17:12And I don't know if it will be the next blood pressure test or
- 17:20in three or five or ten times in the future.
- 17:26I just know that there is a number, the number of which
- 17:36that's the number of tests you've done with other people
- 17:46that feels exactly like if you were doing it by yourself at
- 17:52home. And therefore every attempt gets
- 18:01you closer to that number. And I want you to think about
- 18:09courage. Now, some people think of
- 18:14courage as the absence of fear, but it isn't real.
- 18:21Courage is taking action even in the presence of fear.
- 18:31Because if there's No Fear, why is courage needed?
- 18:37It's just doing the thing to be courageous.
- 18:41There has to be anxiety, fear, or a perceived risk.
- 18:48And I want you to feel that glowing shape there in your
- 18:52heart expand and glow. Feel that you are activating
- 19:01your courage. You could even imagine early
- 19:12explorers and pioneers sailing off into the unknown with no
- 19:22idea of what would happen. But by doing the thing, they
- 19:31found that the beliefs that had stood for centuries came
- 19:38crumbling down like that House of Cards.
- 19:43And each time you do it, the fear dilutes and dilutes until
- 19:51it is insignificant. What if a blood pressure test is
- 20:01not a test? But just a signal of progress.
- 20:07A visit to a pharmacy becomes practice.
- 20:12A blood donation becomes a gift to others.
- 20:16And what if a full health screening becomes irrefutable
- 20:22proof that you are free of a once confining fear?
- 20:33And in every one of those moments, you could choose to
- 20:38treat the ACT as something mundane, pragmatic.
- 20:45No drama, no threat, just something that you're choosing
- 20:50to do, like tying your shoelaces or brushing your teeth.
- 20:59No big deal. Where focus goes, energy flows
- 21:08and you are in control of your focus and the meanings you
- 21:13attach to experiences. These things now are just more
- 21:24stepping stones of progress, opportunities to break free from
- 21:30a fear, a step upward towards calm, capability and self trust.
- 21:43So in that safe place, just imagine a giant cinema screen
- 21:50showing you the future. And I want you to see the first
- 21:59thing you see on that screen is yourself walking into a
- 22:03pharmacy, not with anxiety, but with calm curiosity.
- 22:13See yourself being tested, almost with the look of boredom,
- 22:23just calm, detached. See yourself sitting down,
- 22:29breathing gently, and you could observe the numbers, but it's
- 22:38almost neutral, like a weather forecast for a place you have no
- 22:44plan on visiting. No judgement, no meaning, just
- 22:53numbers. See yourself leaving the
- 22:58pharmacy with a smile. Maybe it's relief, maybe pride,
- 23:06or maybe something else. And then imagine yourself on
- 23:11that screen, arriving to donate blood.
- 23:17And maybe you can imagine a date, a location, even a time of
- 23:23day, see yourself waiting, looking calm and relaxed with
- 23:32the expression of someone that is thinking of someone else,
- 23:39maybe possible lives that could be saved.
- 23:44And before the blood is taken, there is a blood pressure test,
- 23:52but your eyes are looking elsewhere, some random thing
- 23:57nearby, the colour of shape. I want you to see that version
- 24:04of you calm, relaxed and detached.
- 24:12The blood pressure finishes, see them and taking the blood and in
- 24:1915 or 20 minutes later see yourself leaving with a a little
- 24:26plaster and bandage over the point of extraction.
- 24:31But see yourself smiling, calm and confident.
- 24:39You see yourself as someone that's done something good,
- 24:43something generous, and the numbers that came before it just
- 24:50numbers, either clues of progress or another opportunity
- 25:00of familiarity. And then see the screen change
- 25:06to a place maybe weeks from now. Imagine yourself arriving at a
- 25:13clinic for a full health check. Blood pressure, pulse, blood
- 25:20tests, everything. But at this point, this is not a
- 25:29battle with a nemesis. It's you seeking confirmation
- 25:36that all the work leading up to this point just means that
- 25:41nothing can faze you. Now see yourself sitting calmly,
- 25:48chatting casually with the nurse or the doctor, completely at
- 25:54ease. See yourself so relaxed that
- 25:59you're laughing and joking, smiling in a peaceful way.
- 26:07You've done it before, and each time you've grown calmer that
- 26:12all the familiarity has led to this point.
- 26:20And maybe in that moment, you realize that the fear never
- 26:25really had power over you. It was simply waiting to be
- 26:31called out, to be seen for what it was.
- 26:37A paper tiger, an imaginary monster under the bed that was
- 26:42never real. That's it.
- 26:49So take a deep breath in. As you exhale, imagine breathing
- 26:55out the last remnants of tension.
- 27:01And I want you to feel. Feel that glowing, moving shape
- 27:06there in your heart. Think of the sound or the words
- 27:13that resonate without feeling of courage.
- 27:18A willingness to reveal that many fears are false evidence
- 27:26appearing real stories and narratives that you once
- 27:32believed but now don't. And before long that courage
- 27:40won't even be needed. There was a time when you need
- 27:46courage to drive on unknown roads, and then you didn't.
- 27:54You don't need courage forever. Just for those first few times
- 28:00until experience and familiarity then is the reassurance that you
- 28:08need. Just allow all of those
- 28:16wonderful feelings to take place, changes to update the
- 28:23software of your mind and see one final image on that screen
- 28:31perhaps a year or two from now. Imagine yourself perhaps just
- 28:40after a blood pressure test. None of your choosing.
- 28:45It was just routine and that version of you was unfazed
- 28:50throughout. Step into that future version of
- 28:54you and feel how it would feel like all of that past was just
- 29:05something you lived with for a while but is now gone.
- 29:11That's it. Get a sense that this future is
- 29:16where you're heading to. It just becomes mundane like
- 29:23anything else. A routine dental check, like
- 29:32getting on the scales and seeing your weight.
- 29:36Before long, a blood pressure test will be just the same as
- 29:41any of those other things. And would you get a sense of
- 29:47what that would be like? Let me know by nodding your
- 29:50head. That's it.
- 29:53And it's time to return now to the here and the now, taking all
- 29:59of these changes, new thoughts, new strategies with you.
- 30:03Take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 30:08nose. Just wiggle your fingers and
- 30:11wiggle your toes. Connect and calibrate into the
- 30:16here and the now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken
- 30:23you. Starting to count 123 waking up
- 30:30456 more alert 7-8 open your eyes.
