Transcript
- 0:00Today's episode is brought to you by leaving a job early due to getting a new
- 0:04one. It feels a world different than getting fired.
- 0:08President Trump has a different way of calculating. There's two ways of calculating percentages.
- 0:13If you have a $600 drug and you reduce it to $10, that's a 600% reduction.
- 0:20RFK Jr. on Trump's MAGA math. Insert theme song here.
- 0:24This is the Daily Sarcast. I give you the news and maybe a laugh.
- 0:27I'm Lindsay Vernick and it's April 24th, 2026.
- 0:31Happy Friday. I just want to give a quick shout out to all the listeners who
- 0:36are abroad and listening to this podcast.
- 0:38I don't know if you guys actually are or not, but
- 0:42I'm getting like things that saying that you
- 0:44are and I just want to thank you for listening and just
- 0:48generally thank everybody for listening because it means a lot to me my numbers
- 0:53have grown all the way from like two to three listeners today to an average
- 0:58of like 15 a day ish so that's really exciting and for everyone that's listening
- 1:05whether we're friends or we're not.
- 1:07Thank you again for tuning in,
- 1:09and I'm going to stop saying thank you and getting on with the podcast.
- 1:12So in real news, if you went to Trader Joe's back in 2019, which you probably
- 1:17did, congratulations, you may be able to get money for that. Here's the situation.
- 1:23Trader Joe's got hit with a class action lawsuit because receipts allegedly
- 1:27printed too much of your card number.
- 1:30It didn't print the whole thing, but enough of the number to make people go,
- 1:35yeah, that feels like a little too much of her sharing there.
- 1:38The rule is basically for this stuff, like don't print too much card info and
- 1:42receipts and keep it minimal and safe and forgettable, like most of our dating history.
- 1:48The lawsuit says some stores printed more digits than they were supposed to,
- 1:52so Trader Joe's was like, we deny everything, but also like nobody's identity
- 1:57was stolen from this, and also this is a small issue. And also,
- 2:01please stop looking at us.
- 2:03It's classic corporate statement energy.
- 2:06Very nothing happened, but also here's $7.4 million just in case you want to stop asking questions.
- 2:13So the fun part is, if you shop there between March and July 2019 with a card,
- 2:17you might be eligible for around $100.
- 2:21Obviously, it's not life-changing money, but it is giving free groceries.
- 2:26And yes, you do need to file a claim for this because obviously you have to
- 2:29fill out a forum to recover money from a receipt you definitely threw out like over six years ago.
- 2:35The deadline is this June, so you have time to fill it out, which is great because
- 2:40procrastination is truly the only universal lifestyle at this point.
- 2:44Anyway, $100 for your emotional inconvenience from 2019 is kind of the most
- 2:49American thing I've heard all week.
- 2:51Yesterday, at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, a normal Thursday apparently
- 2:56turned into an emergency situation you can't really file under a shopping trip.
- 3:01Police say two groups got into an argument inside the food court and started shooting at each other.
- 3:06It's giving very budget-friendly West Side Story vibes.
- 3:10At least one person was killed and five others were hurt. Some of the people
- 3:14hurt weren't even involved, they were just in the wrong place at the absolute worst time.
- 3:19Shoppers described hearing rapid gunfire and doing what you do in that exact
- 3:22moment, which is basically anything that gets you behind a wall,
- 3:25a rack of clothes, or a locked dressing room as fast as possible.
- 3:29This wasn't random, and it was a targeted dispute between two groups of people.
- 3:33A couple of people are in custody, and investigators are still figuring out
- 3:38how many shooters were actually involved.
- 3:40The FBI and ATF are assisting, and apparently there's no ongoing threat to the public right now.
- 3:46So yes, there was basically like a gang fight at a mall in a food court.
- 3:51It doesn't sound like it's real, but like everything else that's happening these
- 3:55days, it very much is real.
- 3:57In genuinely good news, which feels very too rare, unfortunately,
- 4:02the FDA just approved a new gene therapy that can help children born with a
- 4:06rare inherited form of deafness here for the first time.
- 4:10The treatment is for a condition caused by a single gene mutation,
- 4:13and doctors say it's the first time in history a medical therapy has restored
- 4:18hearing in children born deaf.
- 4:20One little boy named Miles received the treatment last year,
- 4:24and doctors say his hearing is now normal.
- 4:27He was born deaf, and now he can hear, which is very, very crazy and very, very cool.
- 4:31The company behind the therapy says it plans to provide it to free to any child who needs it.
- 4:37And honestly, between doom-scrolling scams and people fighting with guns in
- 4:41mall food courts, it's nice to report a story where humans use technology for
- 4:45something that's actually very, very good. in Lindsay life.
- 4:49Yesterday was my last day working on a show with the 90s people.
- 4:54Very sad, but I am moving on to a new show that's in New York City,
- 4:59and I'm very excited to start on that on Monday.
- 5:02But for my last day, I got made fun of, which is literally my favorite thing
- 5:06in the world because I am the easiest person to make fun of. If you know me, you know.
- 5:11One of the cast members was telling the story about
- 5:14how I was driving them this week and how I
- 5:17could barely step on the gas pedal and they
- 5:19were literally yelling at me to step on the gas because
- 5:23the car was moving so slowly and it
- 5:25took me like 20 minutes to do a u-turn and then the audio guy comes out of nowhere
- 5:30and was like yeah Lindsay doesn't really know what she's doing and the cast
- 5:35member was like yeah that's not really a great sign when someone from the outside
- 5:40of the car says what a bad driver somebody is.
- 5:43So yeah, it was my last day. And I tried to Irish goodbye, everybody,
- 5:48because it was such a short show.
- 5:50I would think I was on it for maybe three weeks. And I didn't really get that close with anybody.
- 5:57But the one producer who was really mean to me the whole show,
- 6:01she comes up to me and she was like, it was so nice working with you.
- 6:05And tries to give me a hug. And I just started waving in her face. And I was like, bye.
- 6:12See you later. And turned around and left.
- 6:16MVP of this week goes to the fertility clinic that accidentally mixed up the embryos.
- 6:23This week's MVP is not a celebrity, and it's not an athlete,
- 6:27and it's most definitely not someone who tried their very best.
- 6:32It is the entire concept of we triple check everything in a fertility clinic
- 6:37being proven as not working.
- 6:40So in Florida, there was this couple that went through IVF and they had a baby
- 6:45and they bonded with that baby and named that baby and then later found out
- 6:48that that baby was not genetically theirs,
- 6:51which is honestly the kind of plot twist you normally get from a limited series
- 6:55on streaming called something like Untangled or Estranged.
- 6:59But DNA testing later confirmed that this child is 100% South Asian.
- 7:05And it's very obvious when you look at the pictures because these parents are
- 7:10100% Caucasian, and the clinic has since identified the likely biological parents
- 7:16among other IVF patients from the same window.
- 7:19So the MVP here is not a person, and it's also really not really an MVP.
- 7:25It's LVP, least valuable player.
- 7:29IVF is supposed to be one of the most controlled environments in medicine.
- 7:33It's not casual logistics.
- 7:36This is not, oh sorry your coffee was decaf. This is like identity level precision work.
- 7:42And somewhere in this chain, labeling, tracking, or transferring,
- 7:47somebody just messed up here.
- 7:49So congratulations to the Fertility Center of Orlando's operational workflow
- 7:54when this week achieved something truly rare in healthcare.
- 7:58It turned a science-backed process into a high-stakes mystery box.
- 8:02Because it turns out, nothing humbles modern technology faster than paperwork.
- 8:08Cooking tip of the day. Take the chicken off the bone before serving it.
- 8:13Feedback, comments, questions, and a shoe-ish by looking for a date,
- 8:16email me at lindsay at thedailystarcast.com. Thank you so much for listening.
- 8:21Have a great, great weekend, and I will talk to you guys on Monday.
