- 0:00Have you ever made a decision in the heat of the moment that you later regretted?
- 0:05Maybe in the moment you felt hurt, or rejected, disappointed, or even angry.
- 0:11Maybe someone said something that rubbed you the wrong way.
- 0:14And maybe you just felt left out, overlooked, or even taken for granted.
- 0:18And before you had a time to think it through, you reacted.
- 0:22You sent that text, you quit the group, you unfriended somebody, or you blocked someone.
- 0:28You made a decision that felt right in the moment, but didn't sit right later.
- 0:33Today, we're talking about the space in between the feeling that you're experiencing and the
- 0:39boundary you're trying to set.
- 0:41Because feelings are important, but they shouldn't be the thing making the decisions for us.
- 0:50If you're tired of people pleasing, caring too much, and wondering why peace still feels
- 0:56so hard to hold on to, you're in the right place.
- 0:59Hi, I'm Lori, mom, former people pleaser, and your boundaries coach.
- 1:05Here we talk about how to protect your peace, set healthier boundaries, and get clear on
- 1:10what actually matters so that you can build a life that feels lighter, calmer, and more
- 1:16satisfying.
- 1:17So let's stop the chaos for a minute, moms, catch our breath, and get into this next episode.
- 1:24Hey friend, I'm your host, Lori Grimes, and this is your midweek reset.
- 1:31So before we jump into today's topic, I wanted to give you a little update from where I'm
- 1:35recording this week.
- 1:37I'm actually recording from Waco, Texas, because my kids got into a program called Baylor TIP,
- 1:44and the TIP just stands for Talent Identification Program.
- 1:49So this is just a class that they can qualify for through an exam and their academics.
- 1:56And once they get into this program, they can take accelerated courses.
- 1:59My son's taking engineering classes, and my daughter's taking art and music composition.
- 2:05So it's been fun to get them to see them get to take these different kinds of courses and
- 2:10see what they really like.
- 2:12So I wanted to say that one thing I've been thinking about while we've been here is that
- 2:19it's so important to continue to take care of the things that matter to you most, even
- 2:24when you're on vacation or things are different than your normal routine.
- 2:29And I've really made sure to keep up with my exercise because I strength train.
- 2:34I try to strength train five days a week.
- 2:36And I found a gym that I actually go to in Austin nearby.
- 2:41And so I've been able to still get in my workout.
- 2:43So that has made me feel really good.
- 2:45I've also stayed on top of my nutrition goals.
- 2:48And I went shopping, got all the stuff I needed at the grocery store, and I stocked the fridge
- 2:53with the foods that I eat on my plan.
- 2:56And no, I have not been perfect.
- 2:58Last night we actually made some s'mores.
- 3:00So we are enjoying this vacation time.
- 3:03And there is some room for flexibility.
- 3:06But I just wanted to make sure that you understand I'm a real mom with real schedule changes.
- 3:14And I do try to live out the things that I teach here on this podcast in real life.
- 3:18So I even brought my podcast equipment with me so I could stay on top of recording and
- 3:25bringing that to you guys.
- 3:27And I even packed my Bible study and a few books I've been reading.
- 3:31Because those are the things that keep us grounded, right?
- 3:33These are the things that we're investing in are really important to us.
- 3:36And I just think that as moms, sometimes we get stuck thinking we got to meet our kids'
- 3:40needs.
- 3:41And we got to let go of our needs to do that.
- 3:43But we don't.
- 3:44So I think this also connects perfectly to today's topic.
- 3:49Because one of the healthiest things we can do is slow down long enough to recognize what
- 3:54we're feeling before we react.
- 3:57So last week, we talked about baby steps with boundaries and finding those safe people around us.
- 4:03Today, I want to switch over to talking about what happens after we identify a feeling and
- 4:09before we set a boundary.
- 4:11Because that's often where the real work is happening.
- 4:13So several years ago, I found myself feeling rejected by a group of friends.
- 4:18I felt hurt and I felt disappointment.
- 4:22I felt angry.
- 4:24And instead of doing this thing I'm telling you to do and slow down and process those
- 4:29feelings, I reacted.
- 4:31I removed people from Facebook.
- 4:33I blocked people.
- 4:35And I made some quick decisions that felt justified in the moment because my emotions
- 4:40were hot.
- 4:41I mean, I was running high.
- 4:43And looking back, I thought I was setting boundaries, but what I was really doing was
- 4:48just reacting to my pain.
- 4:50I hadn't taken the time to sit with what I was feeling.
- 4:54And I surely hadn't prayed about it.
- 4:56I hadn't even slowed down long enough to figure out what was actually happening.
- 5:01And eventually, I realized that I had actually made the situation work.
- 5:05I had to go back and I had to apologize to those people.
- 5:10And that experience taught me something I still carry with me today.
- 5:14A reactionary boundary can create a much bigger mess than the one we are actually trying to
- 5:21solve.
- 5:22One of the biggest, biggest lessons I've learned is that, yes, feelings are valuable.
- 5:27We do need to pay attention to them and they do tell us something.
- 5:32Anger may reveal a boundary violation and disappointment may also reveal an unmet expectation.
- 5:40Fear may reveal uncertainty that we're experiencing.
- 5:45Resentment may feel like we've been saying yes when we really needed to say no.
- 5:50And even like FOMO, you know, the fear of missing out can tell us something.
- 5:54Maybe you've tried to stop participating in gossip around you, or maybe you stepped away
- 5:59from some dramatic unhealthy conversations.
- 6:03Maybe you've changed some habits, some priorities or your relationships, and now you're watching
- 6:07other people continue to do the things that you no longer feel called to do.
- 6:11And that feeling is valid and it is real.
- 6:14But here's what I've learned.
- 6:16Feelings make great messengers, but terrible, terrible decision makers.
- 6:23Feelings deserve our attentions.
- 6:25Yes, they don't automatically deserve control.
- 6:29They should not be driving the car.
- 6:31So this is where many of us skip ahead, right?
- 6:35We feel something, we react, but scripture teaches us something different.
- 6:38In James 1.19, it says, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to
- 6:44become angry.
- 6:46Notice the word slow, slow to speak, slow to react, slow to become angry.
- 6:50There is wisdom in slowing down.
- 6:53Sometimes the healthiest boundary phrase you can use is, let me think about that and get
- 6:58back to you.
- 6:59Or I need some time to pray on this.
- 7:01I don't want to answer right away because that pause creates space for wisdom to come
- 7:07in.
- 7:08So in Proverbs 3.5-6, it says, trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your
- 7:14own understanding, and all your ways submit to Him and He will make your path straight.
- 7:19When we are hurt, guys, when we are angry or feeling rejected or disappointment, we're
- 7:24often leaning on our own understanding, right?
- 7:27It's like our own filter, the way we see things.
- 7:31We're viewing the situation through our lens of our emotions, but God invites us to bring
- 7:37our feelings to Him before we make decisions.
- 7:40Prayer helps us to separate what we're feeling from what we're just assuming.
- 7:45Prayer helps us to distinguish between a real boundary issue and a just a wounded reaction.
- 7:51And prayer helps us to seek wisdom instead of just seeking relief.
- 7:56So here's a better way to go about it.
- 7:59Instead of the feel, react, regret, try this, feel, pause, pray, then proceed.
- 8:08Notice the feeling.
- 8:09Get curious about it.
- 8:11Ask yourself some questions.
- 8:12What am I feeling?
- 8:13What happened here?
- 8:14Is this a pattern?
- 8:15Do I do this a lot?
- 8:17Or is this just a one-time event?
- 8:19What responsibility belongs to me?
- 8:22What wisdom, what would wisdom look like here?
- 8:25And then bring it before God, because God has infinite wisdom.
- 8:29He can see everything that's going on.
- 8:32And only after you spent some time processing, praying, and seeking wisdom should you decide
- 8:37what a boundary might, what boundary might be needed.
- 8:40So this week, the next time you feel hurt, angry, disappointed, rejected, pressured to
- 8:48respond right away, practice the pause.
- 8:52Instead of reacting, simply just say, let me think about that and get back to you.
- 8:56Then spend some time praying.
- 8:58Ask God for wisdom before you move forward.
- 9:02So friend, as you head into the rest of your week, remember your feelings matter, but they
- 9:06don't have to be in charge.
- 9:09You're going to feel, pause, pray, then proceed.
- 9:14Healthy boundaries are rarely built in the heat of the moment.
- 9:17Instead, they are built with wisdom.
