- 0:21And what happens when you do well, you'll find you.
- 0:25Join me, click follow, like and subscribe and let's see where
- 0:29this leads. I never gave much thought to
- 0:34what I wore. Of course I cared about what I
- 0:37look like and how I presented, but I never stopped and thought
- 0:41what do I like? What's my personal style?
- 0:45I guess I just adopted what was around me when I was young.
- 0:49I wore a uniform and the little places we were allowed to choose
- 0:52our own style with accessories like shoes and backpacks, well,
- 0:57we all found a new uniform. That was whatever the consensus
- 1:00was within the class and it was very rare that anybody would
- 1:03deviate because if you did, then you would stand out and that
- 1:07would make you a target, someone that could be made fun of.
- 1:11Then when I started going out at night with my friends, I adopted
- 1:15the uniform of New York Black or anything dark that in the night
- 1:20reads black. Black dress, black pants, black
- 1:24jeans. Well, you get the picture.
- 1:26And then when I got a corporate job, I looked around at everyone
- 1:30that was there and thought, I'll wear what she's wearing, what
- 1:33she's wearing, what she's wearing.
- 1:34And again, I formed a uniform of sorts.
- 1:38I pretty much went through life like that, looking at what
- 1:41everybody else was doing and then saying seems to work for
- 1:45them, why not me too? But now a lot of things that
- 1:49worked for others are no longer working for me.
- 1:52Or maybe they never worked for me and now I just see it.
- 1:56So I decided that I need to find what style is for me, which will
- 2:00be tied to my essence and the journey back to whoever I was
- 2:05before I said the uniform will suffice.
- 2:08Now this idea, it didn't start all of a sudden.
- 2:11I didn't wake up one day and say let's go into the closet, let's
- 2:14look at everything and let's re evaluate all of it all at once.
- 2:19Now it happened because I was buying dresses online.
- 2:22Instagram got me again in the morning.
- 2:25That seems to be when I'm the most susceptible to suggestions.
- 2:29So I started looking at dresses on this one site, and I ended up
- 2:33getting all of them. When they arrived, I realized I
- 2:36didn't need more dresses. Even though I liked them, I
- 2:39didn't need them. But there was one one that I
- 2:42really didn't need. It was so specific and so not
- 2:47characteristic of anything that I would have purchased in the
- 2:49past, but everything about it I liked.
- 2:52I was drawn to it, actually. It was blue and white with
- 2:56orange touches. Again, not really me.
- 3:00And when I put it on, I saw flaws.
- 3:03I had to fix the sleeves and other little things.
- 3:07So I decided that I was going to let it sit in the box just for a
- 3:11few days while I thought about this dress.
- 3:13I then went to the store and returned all the dresses and
- 3:16held on to that one. I didn't know why I liked it so
- 3:20much. I didn't know if I'd ever even
- 3:21wear it. But it was coming home with me.
- 3:24When I decided to go to Mexico City with my friend, I said the
- 3:28dress is coming and I'm not going to keep it in the
- 3:30suitcase. I will wear it because I guess
- 3:33that's what vacations are for, wearing things that you don't
- 3:36normally wear, having an excuse to say, say la vie.
- 3:40I'm going to be this version of me for this trip.
- 3:44And I wore the dress the first day in Mexico City.
- 3:47I put it on and I owned it. And as I wore it throughout the
- 3:51day, I thought, could this be me?
- 3:53Is this the start of a new me? When I got back to America, I
- 3:58posted pictures on Instagram of that trip and I got the most
- 4:01comments on that dress. I was fascinated by that.
- 4:05Did they just like the dress like I had liked it, or do they
- 4:09like me in it? Was it that combination?
- 4:12I didn't ask anyone that. I guess I just figured it didn't
- 4:17matter. What mattered was what I
- 4:20thought. And then I realized I had never
- 4:23really given much thought about what mattered to me when it came
- 4:25to my personal style, and I wanted to change that, so I did.
- 4:31So before I would embark on this discovery session, I thought
- 4:35about what a friend and I had talked about a while ago.
- 4:38It was probably several years back.
- 4:40I asked my friend who's a fashion model.
- 4:43She's been modeling since she was in her teens, and everything
- 4:46looks great on her, as it should.
- 4:49That's her job, after all, I said to her.
- 4:52When you go to a store and you try and close, how do you know
- 4:55what to buy if everything looks good on you?
- 4:58Because normally I'll buy what looks good on me, but for you
- 5:03there must be a different way. You decide.
- 5:05And she said, yeah, you're right.
- 5:08It is complicated when things just fit right and they do look
- 5:13good. But I don't go with what looks
- 5:15good on me. I go with what feels good on me,
- 5:19what feels right. I had never thought to think of
- 5:22that before. There it is again, feeling tied
- 5:27back to your essence, what you're drawn to, who you are
- 5:31authentically. So as I stepped into this
- 5:34discovery phase of style, I brought feeling with me to the
- 5:37forefront of my decision making. I already knew one part of my
- 5:41style, which was muted colors, natural tones like olives and
- 5:47Browns and beiges. So that was easy.
- 5:51I think that that covered one side of me.
- 5:54I think everybody has two sides that shows in their style and
- 5:59almost paradoxically, don't seem like you could be the same
- 6:02person because your style is so severed.
- 6:06But then again, for me, there's a part of me that is quiet,
- 6:10serene, pensive, and peaceful. That's the side that most people
- 6:15don't know, but I know very well.
- 6:18And over the last few years I've gotten to know that side more
- 6:21and more. So I guess I gravitated towards
- 6:24natural tones that embodied all those things.
- 6:28And now thinking about it, that makes sense.
- 6:31But then there was a side of me that I hadn't explored with
- 6:34style. It was my whimsical side, my
- 6:36playful side, my free spirit side.
- 6:41That's the side that I share the most with people.
- 6:44But for whatever reason, it didn't show up in my wardrobe
- 6:46choices. I had brought color into my
- 6:49wardrobe a long time ago. That was when I moved to Los
- 6:52Angeles, and I said goodbye to black for a while.
- 6:55But I had never mixed patterns with color.
- 6:59I always thought that that might be a little too much, but I was
- 7:03rethinking that now. Why had I shield away from the
- 7:06combo of color and patterns? What did that say about where I
- 7:10was at or who I was around again?
- 7:13Maybe it was a way to blend in, hide in plain sight, or maybe I
- 7:18was just so used to wearing what everybody else wore that I
- 7:22didn't give it much thought. But now I was giving a thought.
- 7:27So I looked up who designed the dress that I liked, and I
- 7:29started there. I went on their website and I
- 7:32found tons of things that I liked.
- 7:34Or so I thought. Then I found out that they had
- 7:37two locations in Los Angeles, so I hit up both.
- 7:41Why not? Why not make this a full
- 7:43activity? Have this discovery span several
- 7:46days. So when I went to both stores
- 7:48and I tried on dresses, things became very clear very quickly.
- 7:53A lot of things look good on me, so I couldn't rely on what I saw
- 7:56in the mirror. I had to rely on how I felt and
- 7:59I felt like colors and patterns and richness and whimsy or all
- 8:05sorts of right for me right now. I bought this dress and that
- 8:09dress and this dress and that dress all knowing that I didn't
- 8:11need any dresses. And when I put these dresses in
- 8:14my closet, it was as though they spoke to me as I closed the
- 8:17closet door. They said, don't forget about
- 8:20us. You have places to go because we
- 8:23need to be seen. So that's exactly what I did.
- 8:27I started thinking of places to wear these dresses.
- 8:30I didn't want them to stay cooped up in that closet with
- 8:33the lights out. I wanted whatever I saw on those
- 8:36dresses to be seen on me. I wanted to embrace who I am
- 8:40right now. And that makes sense.
- 8:43I've done it in all facets of my life, so how I present should
- 8:48match with how I feel. So when I think about my
- 8:51personal style, it doesn't end with clothing.
- 8:54It extends to your home aesthetic, how you decorate your
- 8:58space. But before I go there, I thought
- 9:02I'd reflect on another story that involves my friend, the
- 9:05person I spoke about earlier in this episode.
- 9:07Years ago, she'd asked me and my friend to go wedding dress
- 9:10shopping with her. I remember feeling so honored
- 9:13that she would trust us with such a personal decision.
- 9:16She was getting married at a castle, so my idea for what she
- 9:20should wear was very specific to what I thought a castle wedding
- 9:24calls for. I think the other friend that
- 9:26she invited also had a similar idea of what she should wear.
- 9:31As we watched our friend try on dress after dress, everything
- 9:35looks so pretty. But then one stood out.
- 9:39It just looked like it fit the location.
- 9:42She looked amazing. We had found the winner, or so
- 9:47we thought. And when we were at the last
- 9:49bridal shop of the day, our friend came out of the dressing
- 9:53room wearing this beautiful slinky beach dress.
- 9:58She was glowing and she said I love it.
- 10:02I don't know what it is about this dress, but I love it.
- 10:06And at that point, my friend and I decided to convince her
- 10:08otherwise. We reminded her that she chose
- 10:11to have her wedding at a castle and that this beach dress was
- 10:15suitable for a beach and it didn't matter that she looked
- 10:18amazing in it, it just wasn't right for the location.
- 10:21We must have been very good at convincing her because she wore
- 10:25the dress that we both suggested was right for the venue and on
- 10:29her wedding day she looked beautiful.
- 10:32But years later, she said, I still think about that other
- 10:35dress, the beach dress. I still wish I had bought that.
- 10:40And now when I reflect back on that day and that statement that
- 10:44she made years later, my vision for her wedding and my friend's
- 10:47vision for her wedding didn't matter.
- 10:50What mattered is how she was going to feel in that dress on
- 10:54her wedding day. If I could go back, I would have
- 10:58sat there and supported her choices.
- 11:01Who cares if you wear a beach wedding dress to a castle?
- 11:04Who cares what anybody thinks? What matters is what feels right
- 11:08to you. I learned that lesson and now I
- 11:12own that lesson. OK, so now on to personal style.
- 11:17When it comes to your home aesthetic, that's something I'd
- 11:20also not given much thought to. Why you might wonder is because
- 11:24I went from living in my parents house to living with my former
- 11:28husband. Now it makes this funny or maybe
- 11:31interesting, is that for a living, I'm a designer, A
- 11:35graphic designer, and I spend most of my time trying to
- 11:38understand other people's style and then doing the best I can
- 11:42with whatever it is that they like.
- 11:44So when it came to Home Decor, I did the same thing.
- 11:48I tried to fuse whatever it was that my former husband liked
- 11:51with what I could live with. I never was modern, but he was.
- 11:56So I thought, what's my version of modern?
- 11:59Let's start there. And so the fusion began.
- 12:03Now none of that ever bothered me again.
- 12:06I never gave it much thought, but I think of my style as all
- 12:11styles. I see richness in all different
- 12:13things. So I never stopped to think what
- 12:16spoke to me more than just what could I appreciate, what could I
- 12:21value. And then the opportunity to stop
- 12:25and take notice came. I was newly separated and I just
- 12:30got in a place of my own, my first place that I was going to
- 12:33call my own. I'd always live with somebody,
- 12:37and now it was just me. I remember looking at the Bear
- 12:41apartment, thinking where do I start, what do I like, and
- 12:46realizing that there was nobody there that I had to fuse my
- 12:49style with. This is going to be my
- 12:52opportunity to find out what it was that I liked, just me making
- 12:56all the decisions. I remember being excited and
- 12:59equally overwhelmed by this idea, but in the end, I embraced
- 13:03it. And as I sit in this apartment
- 13:06now, I love all my choices. My style is eclectic and clean,
- 13:13colorful and serene. It's kind of like my clothing
- 13:17choices. I'm not a tchotchke person.
- 13:20I don't collect things that just look cute and take up space and
- 13:24eventually collect dust. However, I made an exception.
- 13:29I bought a decorative plate and I put it on a cabinet that has
- 13:31all of my favorite things on it. Books, art, things that I find
- 13:36special. And this plate, it has a quote
- 13:39on it. The quote is by a purveyor of
- 13:42fashion, somebody that knows all about creating, embracing and
- 13:46owning your personal style. And that would be Coco Chanel.
- 13:51As I sit in my apartment now, I remember that plate, but I can't
- 13:55remember exactly what it said. So give me a SEC.
- 13:58Let me go get it. Now looking at it, I realize I
- 14:15was drawn to figuring out eventually what my own style
- 14:18was. Why else would I have been drawn
- 14:20to buy this plate when I was decorating my place?
- 14:24And I guess this simple quote explains it best.
- 14:27What our essence is when it comes to style.
- 14:30What it is to embrace our essence.
- 14:35Oi guess I'll end here. Beauty begins the moment you
- 14:39decide to be yourself. Thanks for listening.
