- 0:01Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts of the
- 0:03Soulfully in Brand. I'm here to dish out all things
- 0:07about traditional Chinese medicine, yin yoga, reflexology.
- 0:12And of course, I'm here to disrupt your mind.
- 0:16So thanks so much for pressing play on today's episode.
- 0:20Let's do this. I'm irritated, I'm frustrated,
- 0:33I'm even feeling a little bit angry and this heat and humidity
- 0:39is driving me a neness. This is what I'm talking about
- 0:45today on the Internet Life podcast.
- 0:49This heat and humidity and how reflexology is really a game
- 0:54changer in helping you deal with it and more than just the
- 0:58physical heat. So if you missed last week's
- 1:02episode, I dove in deep about how to stay cool with yin yoga.
- 1:08So today I want to, you know, bring the conversation a little
- 1:11bit deeper by talking about how reflexology, and if you're not
- 1:16aware of what reflexology is, it's a modality that works
- 1:20primarily through the feet. It's also done through the
- 1:23hands. It's even done through the ears.
- 1:26And the idea is that there are reflexes in the feet.
- 1:31There's actually over 72,000 reflexes in our feet, believe it
- 1:35or not, and they all link up to something in our body.
- 1:40And by applying specific pressure techniques on these
- 1:44reflexes, we basically improve the function of the related
- 1:49area. We also improve function overall
- 1:56in the body. And we just feel a whole lot
- 2:00better. And everything just works so
- 2:02much better. So how can reflexology really
- 2:06help you keep cool? Well, physically, it helps you
- 2:09keep cool because it helps to regulate body temperature.
- 2:14It's always about just bringing the body back into balance so
- 2:18you know, if you're feeling overheated physically, if you're
- 2:21feeling really tired or fatigued, or if you're just
- 2:25feeling like kind of sluggish because the humidity is just
- 2:28kind of like really setting in and it's just driving you
- 2:31bananas. Reflexology will help you with
- 2:34that. But what's even cooler, and this
- 2:38is where people tend to not understand the power of
- 2:41reflexology, is that it can also help you keep cool emotionally,
- 2:47mentally. Now, how does it do that?
- 2:51Well, because reflexology works on everything.
- 2:54It works on the emotional level as well.
- 2:57So it calms you down. And typically when I see a lot
- 3:01of patients, especially if they're telling me that they
- 3:03feel really angry or they feel irritated, then I work a lot on
- 3:09the liver reflex point. And why?
- 3:12Because in Chinese medicine, our liver is like the master emotion
- 3:17that regulates all of our emotions.
- 3:19But primarily it's big role is around anger, frustration, and
- 3:25irritation. So by stimulating that reflex
- 3:29point along with a few other tidbits of points that I press
- 3:33on, I can really help somebody calm down.
- 3:37Now here's the cool thing. You can do this on yourself too.
- 3:41Like when you learn where the points are, then you can start
- 3:44to do this on yourself. You can do this on your partner,
- 3:48your kids, your friends, whoever.
- 3:51You can make a party of it, a feat playing party of it.
- 3:54This is why on the Soulful Yin app, I have included reflexology
- 4:00practices. I've also included acupressure
- 4:02practices as well. And this is all to help you come
- 4:06into balance and to learn how to take care of yourself anytime,
- 4:11anywhere, 365 days of the year, 24/7.
- 4:15If you wake up in the middle of the night and you know you're
- 4:19overheated, great. Well, you can learn some points
- 4:21to calm down the hot flashes if that's what's causing the
- 4:25overheating. Or you can just play with your
- 4:27liver reflex point and a bunch of other points and just, you
- 4:30know, calm down that way. But the point is, is that people
- 4:34think that reflexology is really hard to do on yourself, and it's
- 4:38not. It's actually really easy.
- 4:41The challenging part is just knowing which points to press
- 4:45and stimulate. And that's where I come in.
- 4:47And This is why I love to share this information on my app
- 4:51because I really, truly believe that everybody has the tools
- 4:55within themselves to heal. They just sometimes need a
- 4:59little extra tools and a little extra help.
- 5:03So with reflexology, being able to calm you down physically and
- 5:08emotionally, it can also help with other emotions that might
- 5:13be coming up that could have been stored inside the body,
- 5:18kind of just sitting there brewing but not really doing
- 5:21anything. Things like sadness, grief,
- 5:25worry, fear, shame, guilt, like all of this can be stored in the
- 5:34body. And of course, this is where we
- 5:36store our emotions as in our body and in our organs.
- 5:40And by stimulating different organs, the reflex points on the
- 5:45feet, you can literally start to help your body release emotions.
- 5:51And if you've been following along with this podcast from the
- 5:54beginning, you know that I'm all about the emotional release,
- 6:01whether that's through yin yoga, whether that's through
- 6:04reflexology, acupressure, breath work, meditation, maybe it's a
- 6:08combination of all of that. But my jam is really to bring
- 6:13you back into balance and to help you release emotions.
- 6:17Because if you look at the word emotions and you break it down,
- 6:20it's like E MO Shun. Well, here's the thing.
- 6:26That means something's in motion.
- 6:28Emotions. Emotions are meant to move
- 6:31through us. We often feel a lot of shame or
- 6:37a lot of guilt around feeling certain emotions.
- 6:39Like, you know, I shouldn't be sad this long or I shouldn't be
- 6:42this frustrated or I shouldn't be this scared or this worried.
- 6:46Like what's wrong with me? There's nothing wrong with you.
- 6:50There's absolutely nothing wrong with you.
- 6:52We as human beings are meant to experience a broad spectrum of
- 6:57emotions or meant to feel them, but we're meant to process them
- 7:02and we're meant to the release them.
- 7:04We're not meant to build a house in them.
- 7:06And this is what I try to keep emphasizing on the Soulful Yin
- 7:11app. It's your place where you can
- 7:14pause in stillness, whether that's in a yin yoga practice,
- 7:19whether that's in reflexology or acupressure, breath work or
- 7:23meditation. And you can start to process
- 7:29your emotions and let them go because when emotions stay in
- 7:33the body, they can potentially create dis ease as in like more,
- 7:39you know, more emotional disruptions and brewings and
- 7:42disturbances. But it can also start to create
- 7:45disease, like actual disease in the body.
- 7:50And if you are a fan of traditional Chinese medicine
- 7:53like I am, you know that in traditional Chinese medicine, or
- 7:59I call it TCM, the root of every disease in the body comes from
- 8:05some sort of emotional disturbance, imbalance that's
- 8:10not being resolved and that just keeps coming back and back.
- 8:14And The thing is, the body is always communicating with you
- 8:18and it's always trying to tell you different signs, clues,
- 8:23indicators that, hey, you need to address this.
- 8:27And if we're just running around on autopilot day-to-day, just
- 8:33moving through this thing called life without taking time to
- 8:36pause, then guess what? We don't even know how we feel.
- 8:42I sometimes will ask some of my patients when they're on my
- 8:44massage table, how do you feel? And they're like, or how have
- 8:48you been feeling recently? And they'll tell me like,
- 8:51physically how they're, oh, I'm tired, I'm not sleeping.
- 8:53Well, you know, maybe sometimes somebody might say, yeah, I'm
- 8:57irritated, I'm frustrated. But a lot of the times,
- 9:01especially with the emotional stuff, they won't.
- 9:05They just don't. They're like, I don't know.
- 9:07I'm like, how do you not know? I don't know how I feel.
- 9:11Well, you're telling me how you feel physically, but how do you
- 9:13feel emotionally? I don't know.
- 9:16Well, to me, that is a massive indicator to pause because the
- 9:24pause is so powerful. That is what creates awareness,
- 9:28and the moment that we have awareness of how we're feeling
- 9:32is the moment that we have the opportunity to shift.
- 9:36And I say this all the time in my classes.
- 9:39You cannot change what you're not aware of.
- 9:42If you're literally living with a light bulb over your head on
- 9:45the off position, you got to turn it on.
- 9:50And you know what, again, I want to reiterate that it's OK if you
- 9:55feel guilty or you feel grief or sadness or worry or anger.
- 10:00These are emotions we're meant to feel.
- 10:04The emotions just don't keep building your foundation of the
- 10:08beautiful thing called life on it.
- 10:11That's all. And with reflexology, because it
- 10:17really targets the nervous system, OK, because we're
- 10:21working through the nerves in the body and all the nerves in
- 10:24the body feed into the central nervous system.
- 10:28And because we're working at that level more than the
- 10:33musculoskeletal level, this is what allows your nervous system
- 10:38to shift from sympathetic, so flight or fright into
- 10:42parasympathetic rest and digest or rest and repair.
- 10:46When we're in that state, that rest and digesting, this is
- 10:51where healing takes place. It does not take place in flight
- 10:56or fright. Flight or fright is literally
- 10:58survival mode. And we spend way too much time
- 11:02there. So whether you play with your
- 11:06own feet or whether someone else does it, whether you come to see
- 11:09me for a treatment, if you're in Ottawa, whether you find a
- 11:12reflexology therapist wherever you live, just know that
- 11:17hopefully their primary goal, especially if you're seeing a
- 11:20therapist, is to help them shift you into parasympathetic state.
- 11:26You can totally do it on your own, but there's a little bit
- 11:30more awareness of how you're feeling and what you're sensing
- 11:34versus when you're just lying on a massage table and someone else
- 11:36is doing the work right. But I don't want to dissuade you
- 11:41from exploring reflexology on yourself because if you're not,
- 11:46you're truly missing out here. Major FOMO if you're not playing
- 11:49with your own feet. And it also starts to give you
- 11:52indicators of what might be out of balance, especially if you
- 11:56start feeling the same things over and over again on the same
- 12:00point that you keep pressing. You'd be like, huh, I'm always
- 12:06angry, I'm always irritated, I'm always pissed off.
- 12:09And every time I, you know, stimulate the liver reflex
- 12:11point, like, I feel even worse. Like I get even more irritated.
- 12:17I get even more pissed off. And then the point starts to
- 12:20feel more tender and sensitive. And sometimes it even feels a
- 12:23little bit painful. Well, to me, that's a pretty
- 12:27good indicator to realize that, you know what, something's got
- 12:31to shift. And when you process your
- 12:35emotions, we always have this sort of drama around it.
- 12:39Like it's going to take so long. Like I'm going to be like this,
- 12:44like for like weeks and weeks. Well, to be honest with you,
- 12:49when you get really deliberate about tuning in and noticing how
- 12:53you feel, guess what? It doesn't last as long as you
- 12:59think. Sometimes it's literally like a
- 13:01couple of minutes. I've even shifted in less than a
- 13:05minute because I know now that it doesn't take as long as we
- 13:10always think. That's just our ego mind that's
- 13:12trying to create all the drama around it of like, Oh yeah,
- 13:17let's just stay in this comfortable zone because this is
- 13:20what we know. And we're used to feeling angry
- 13:23and irritated and frustrated. We don't know what it's like to
- 13:26feel joy and happiness and peace.
- 13:28So let's stay over in the angry zone.
- 13:32But where does that serve us? It doesn't serve us at all.
- 13:38And it certainly doesn't serve the people around you.
- 13:41And it certainly doesn't, you know, serve the collective, the
- 13:45universe, the world as a whole. So bottom line, reflexology,
- 13:53yes, it'll help improve function of organs and systems in your
- 13:57body, but it's also going to help you get into a deep
- 14:00parasympathetic state where you're going to heal.
- 14:04And in that state, you can start to shift into becoming the
- 14:10extraordinary person that you're meant to be and also living an
- 14:15extraordinary life that you're meant to live.
- 14:20So thank you so much for pressing play on today's
- 14:23episode. I'm going to see you in about a
- 14:26month. I'm taking a little bit of time
- 14:28off here in July just to have a little bit of vacation, but I
- 14:34will see you back in August. So have an awesome day and make
- 14:39sure you play with those feet.
