- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, my name's Santasha Nabananga Bamblet. I'm a proud yor
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Order Kerni Whoalbury and a waddery woman. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get started on She's on the Money podcast, I
- 0:11Speaker 1: would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land
- 0:14Speaker 1: of which this podcast is recorded on a wondery country,
- 0:18Speaker 1: acknowledging the elders, the ancestors and the next generation coming
- 0:22Speaker 1: through as this podcast is about connecting, empowering, knowledge sharing
- 0:27Speaker 1: and the storytelling of you to make a difference for
- 0:30Speaker 1: today and lasting impact for tomorrow.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Let's get into it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: She's on the Money, She's on the Money.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to She's on the Money, the podcast
- 1:00Speaker 2: that makes finance fun, especially on Fridays. It is actually
- 1:04Speaker 2: our favorite day of the week because we get to
- 1:05Speaker 2: get our little team together and celebrate you guys, our
- 1:08Speaker 2: incredible She's on the Money community today, mister gour She's
- 1:11Speaker 2: got a heap of money wins to share with us.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Miss Bech Sayed is going to share her broke TIBs
- 1:16Speaker 2: and we'll be helping to answer a money dilemma, which
- 1:18Speaker 2: this week is all about navigating buying a property on
- 1:21Speaker 2: your own and someone slid into our DMS needing advice
- 1:25Speaker 2: on whether you should ask for reduced hours at work
- 1:28Speaker 2: to avoid burnout or just push through it. I feel
- 1:32Speaker 2: like that's a fickle conversation, but we're going to get
- 1:34Speaker 2: there later. Last week on the show, we read out
- 1:37Speaker 2: some five star reviews and I got a few dams
- 1:40Speaker 2: of people saying, we love this. It's such a positive energy.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I think we're going to continue. So I did message
- 1:45Speaker 2: you guys before the show and say, please read our
- 1:48Speaker 2: reviews and obviously call your mums and friends and stuff
- 1:51Speaker 2: to post them, because god forbid we ever run out
- 1:54Speaker 2: of five star reviews to read out. But Bech sayed, yes,
- 1:58Speaker 2: what do you bring into the table this weight?
- 2:00Speaker 4: Okay, so this one is from Tracy, and I really
- 2:03Speaker 4: liked this one because I feel like the intro to
- 2:05Speaker 4: the show does mention millennials, but this really is a
- 2:08Speaker 4: reminder that this is for everyone. Yes, okay, So I'm
- 2:11Speaker 4: forty five and have spent so many years feeling ashamed
- 2:14Speaker 4: and anxious around my money management abilities. I had none
- 2:17Speaker 4: in brackets. I love listening to your advice on the podcast,
- 2:21Speaker 4: and the money diresauries are super interesting. So I really
- 2:24Speaker 4: like that one because.
- 2:25Speaker 5: He from This is from Tracy.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Hi, Tracy, Tracy, welcome to the show, and oh my god, no,
- 2:31Speaker 2: everyone's welcome. Why we just updated the intro of this
- 2:35Speaker 2: episode to the podcast that makes personal finance fun, especially
- 2:38Speaker 2: on Fridays, instead of millennials who want financial freedom, because
- 2:42Speaker 2: we're more than millennials.
- 2:43Speaker 6: Everybody wants financial freedom.
- 2:45Speaker 5: By everybody does.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I can't find someone who doesn't want to be financially free.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Maybe Lucy she is, She's an epo baby. Lucy's my dog.
- 2:55Speaker 2: For those of you following the last who might feel
- 2:57Speaker 2: a little bit behind, we are not calling a human
- 2:59Speaker 2: being an epobaby because that would be rude and I
- 3:01Speaker 2: would definitely only do that off Mike, Miss Jess, what
- 3:07Speaker 2: have you got?
- 3:07Speaker 6: Alrighty? This week I picked out one that says I
- 3:10Speaker 6: thought I was relatively good with money until I was
- 3:13Speaker 6: recommended this podcast. They simplify complex content into an easy
- 3:17Speaker 6: to understand format. I can't believe the difference that this
- 3:20Speaker 6: has made to our finances and our thinking. Isn't that
- 3:24Speaker 6: so sweet? From a Smith?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Oh a Smith, thank you. I always laugh at people's
- 3:29Speaker 2: user names because, like sometimes it is their name like
- 3:32Speaker 2: yours bec and then sometimes it's like their username that
- 3:35Speaker 2: they've made up, like I think mine is like toz
- 3:37Speaker 2: dog or something really bad, because like when I got
- 3:40Speaker 2: my first iPhone, I would have been like sixteen and
- 3:42Speaker 2: I set up my Apple profile, then slippery slope, I reckon.
- 3:46Speaker 6: Oh yeah, maybe we can keep an eye out for
- 3:48Speaker 6: the funniest user name as well.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Yes, if you've got.
- 3:51Speaker 2: A funny user name, it is actually time to leave
- 3:54Speaker 2: us a five star review. I have one. It is
- 3:57Speaker 2: from Mish. I mean, if we're talking about using names,
- 4:00Speaker 2: Mish mush is. I think it's really cute too. It's
- 4:05Speaker 2: actually one of the things that got me to read
- 4:06Speaker 2: it out. But they said thank you for all your advice, wisdom,
- 4:09Speaker 2: pep Talk's cheer and of course financial support every week.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I love this podcast. In fact, it's the only one
- 4:15Speaker 2: I religiously listened.
- 4:16Speaker 6: To Oh so cute, very sweet because it's.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Practical and relatable. It has helped me improve and set
- 4:23Speaker 2: up many financial aspects for my young family. So thank
- 4:25Speaker 2: you so much. This podcast has inspired me to look
- 4:28Speaker 2: into doing finance courses. The pod is very motivating. One
- 4:32Speaker 2: day I dream to meet VD and the team as
- 4:34Speaker 2: they are truly, truly incredible. Thank you for your support
- 4:37Speaker 2: and help. Is so cute. Oh my gosh, I know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: And do you know what I was talking about last week?
- 4:43Speaker 2: And I probably shouldn't be sharing on the show, but
- 4:45Speaker 2: you get what you get. We were talking about when
- 4:47Speaker 2: we can do events again. Yeah, oh yeah, And so
- 4:50Speaker 2: like I'm obviously not going to make promises, but obviously
- 4:53Speaker 2: last year I had a baby in late February and
- 4:57Speaker 2: historically we've always done the International Women's Stay events, which
- 5:00Speaker 2: happened to fall in and around the eighth of March,
- 5:03Speaker 2: so I was, what ten days postpartum. That was probably
- 5:07Speaker 2: not going to work for me. But we're talking about
- 5:09Speaker 2: what we can do in the next year because one
- 5:11Speaker 2: of the things when we did a little bit of
- 5:13Speaker 2: a planning session with the team, one of the things
- 5:15Speaker 2: that came out of that was like, we want to
- 5:16Speaker 2: get in front of our community. We want to see
- 5:19Speaker 2: you guys again. So hopefully mish Mush that happens for
- 5:22Speaker 2: us really soon. Yeah, oh my god, not that soon.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Imagine if she's on the money Christmas party, that would
- 5:30Speaker 2: be really everything would be DIY like.
- 5:34Speaker 7: Arts and craft, stocking, stocking, open bar, Corinthians Okay, long.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Long leap there. Let's actually get into what was happening
- 5:44Speaker 2: in our community this week, Miss Jessicarricci, what money wins
- 5:47Speaker 2: are you bringing to the table, all rady.
- 5:49Speaker 6: First one this week I have is from Jesse, who
- 5:52Speaker 6: said I recently canceled my membership at a yuki studio.
- 5:55Speaker 6: They had a six year cancelation fee, which I would
- 5:58Speaker 6: have normally been charged. I let them know that the
- 6:01Speaker 6: reason I was canceling in the first place was because
- 6:03Speaker 6: of financial reasons and asked if they was any opportunity
- 6:06Speaker 6: for them to not charge the fee. That's smart, really smart,
- 6:11Speaker 6: and what happened? The yoga studio said, okay, no problems.
- 6:13Speaker 6: They didn't charge her the fee. Jesse said that never
- 6:15Speaker 6: sees is to amaze me how much money you can
- 6:17Speaker 6: save when you ask for something kindly, money exact. That's sweet.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that's good.
- 6:21Speaker 6: That's a good one. It's a really good one. Next,
- 6:23Speaker 6: I've got one from em Marie who said she's unfortunately
- 6:26Speaker 6: been out of work for around a year now because
- 6:28Speaker 6: of a chronic illness. And sorry, I know it must
- 6:31Speaker 6: be really really hard, but it's on the up and up,
- 6:33Speaker 6: because she said a new medication has become available in Australia.
- 6:37Speaker 6: It's on the PBS and it has improved her from
- 6:39Speaker 6: being essentially bedbound to being able to get out and
- 6:42Speaker 6: live her life again.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, that's so exciting. And the fact that
- 6:45Speaker 2: it's on the PBS means it's not going to break.
- 6:48Speaker 6: The bank exactly. She said she's had it for five
- 6:50Speaker 6: weeks and she made the phone call on Friday and
- 6:52Speaker 6: she's finally going back to work.
- 6:57Speaker 2: That is actually illy. I think that's my favorite money
- 7:00Speaker 2: win incredbit a very very long time.
- 7:03Speaker 6: Yeah, that's huge. Next, I've got a money in from Shannie,
- 7:07Speaker 6: he said. I have the pass up. It's a system
- 7:09Speaker 6: where you get vouchers that you can spend it participating
- 7:12Speaker 6: pubs and local places. She booked a birthday bottomless brunch
- 7:16Speaker 6: at the SB so she must be a Melbourne gowp
- 7:18Speaker 6: Hello at the start of the year and she checked
- 7:20Speaker 6: on the app the other day and didn't realize it
- 7:22Speaker 6: was a part of the platform and she was entitled
- 7:24Speaker 6: Twitter hundred dollar about us.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Oh what's really cool.
- 7:28Speaker 6: That's a lot of drinks at your bottomless brunch. I
- 7:30Speaker 6: bet happy happy birthday. Very exciting.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Jesse is a bottomless I feel like a bottomless brunch
- 7:37Speaker 2: sounds elite. I want to go out to it. I'm
- 7:39Speaker 2: going to have a good time. But like the bottomless part,
- 7:42Speaker 2: I'd be like too Champayne zine and I'd be like,
- 7:44Speaker 2: I'm done now, thank you for having me.
- 7:46Speaker 6: Brunch with a singular drink is a bottomless brunch for.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Me, like one done too. She's out bets like make
- 7:56Speaker 2: the most of the soda waters. Yeah, exactly.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Thinks I've got a money win from Carlie. She said
- 8:02Speaker 6: she started very slowly to invest on Chase eas. She
- 8:06Speaker 6: used the sootm coage you got a ten doll about you,
- 8:08Speaker 6: and she said she's excited to be learning as she
- 8:10Speaker 6: goes and to stop procrastinating.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Oh my god, how good. But also ten dollars for
- 8:14Speaker 2: free we did that. I would say, No, that's literally
- 8:19Speaker 2: a money in that everyone can use this week. Yeah,
- 8:21Speaker 2: that's so everyone that's not already on the sharesas platform.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And if you're thinking, oh, I wish I could have that,
- 8:25Speaker 2: but I'm already on the Charesas platform, well you're already investing,
- 8:27Speaker 2: so you're the real winner here.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Ahead of time. Absolutely, and apparently Carli found a really
- 8:32Speaker 6: great sustainable ETF that she said was right by colleag
- 8:35Speaker 6: great queen. And then lastly this week I have a
- 8:38Speaker 6: money win from Tara who said she helped her mum
- 8:41Speaker 6: and her sister to create their own budgets so they
- 8:43Speaker 6: can take control of their finances.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Oh lovely.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Whenever I read a message or a comment saying someone's
- 8:49Speaker 6: like teaching someone that they know stuff, I feel like
- 8:51Speaker 6: we're spreading the good word of financial litera.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Yeah, really, yes, welcome to the Church of.
- 8:58Speaker 6: The exactly what I think.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Literally literally, don't we have a Bible? That's what we're
- 9:10Speaker 2: a religious cold con no.
- 9:12Speaker 6: Order your copy. It comes out at the end of November.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Religious cult, buy our stuff and also go forth my
- 9:20Speaker 7: children for I was like, else can I put in
- 9:22Speaker 7: here this?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Maybe we should start an m l M or something.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Like Yeah, might be easier, more profitable.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Definitely, Like then we could say yes to all the
- 9:34Speaker 2: dodgy companies that want to work with us. Yeah, true,
- 9:37Speaker 2: hit me up, hit me moving on. I love that, Jess.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I feel like anytime someone says I helped someone make
- 9:46Speaker 2: a budget, I'm like, I love you. You're an icon. You're
- 9:49Speaker 2: an icon. Beck, Let's move on to you. Okay, okay,
- 9:53Speaker 2: let's go. I wantn't know what break Tipsy bringing to
- 9:56Speaker 2: the table because you have a very scary little palm card.
- 10:01Speaker 2: She has a palm card. You have a post it note?
- 10:05Speaker 5: Yes, And I always do this to myself. I always like, write.
- 10:07Speaker 4: In shorthand and you're writing there, yeah, well this actually
- 10:11Speaker 4: I can't. I'll never be able to read this again.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Can you write in shorthand? Or when you say you
- 10:15Speaker 2: wrote in shorthand wrote because I was like, I can
- 10:19Speaker 2: read shorthand.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Well, when I say shorthand, I mean I just start
- 10:23Speaker 4: with the first letter, and then I get lazy, and
- 10:24Speaker 4: then oh yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I feel bad for the team sometimes because I'll write
- 10:28Speaker 2: notes actually in shorthand and they're like, what is this
- 10:31Speaker 2: And I'll be like, oh, yes, I used to do
- 10:34Speaker 2: secretary duties.
- 10:35Speaker 6: I see, that's cool.
- 10:37Speaker 2: It is cool, But only I can read my own notes.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Sure their secret.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Hey, that's like a that's like knowing another language to
- 10:45Speaker 4: talk about someone without them knowing it's true.
- 10:48Speaker 5: That's really cool.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Somehow, Jess, you always like your money win will always
- 10:53Speaker 4: kind of run the same way, the same so.
- 10:55Speaker 2: It's almost like we were meant to be together.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Absolutely, that's really lame, bye, but it's true.
- 11:02Speaker 4: So these these are all very birthday themed. Birthday yeah adjacent,
- 11:06Speaker 4: well actually just birthday themed.
- 11:07Speaker 5: So the first.
- 11:08Speaker 4: One comes from Heather who says, there's a restaurant group.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Now I don't know the name of this restaurant group,
- 11:13Speaker 4: but for example, Studio marro in Windsor, if you book
- 11:16Speaker 4: a table for your friends and you say that it's
- 11:19Speaker 4: your birthday, everyone at the table gets a free drink.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Oh, how cool. That's cool. That's something to look into too,
- 11:25Speaker 2: because they are in lots of states and territories there
- 11:28Speaker 2: are restaurants that have like birthday deals.
- 11:29Speaker 6: That's cool.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, definitely I should have said yes, absolutely. So
- 11:32Speaker 4: a lot of these are, like, you know, very Melbourne based,
- 11:34Speaker 4: but that's okay.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Because like, that's okay, sure Melbourne, aren't that cutting edge leader. Yeah, like,
- 11:41Speaker 2: giving people a free drink because they booked a group
- 11:45Speaker 2: table can't be that revolutionary, but it should be something
- 11:48Speaker 2: that we're all looking into next time we have to
- 11:50Speaker 2: book a group table, because how good is that free
- 11:53Speaker 2: round of drinks?
- 11:54Speaker 5: I know, I know, that's really so good.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Free soda waters, Yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 5: Free soda waters. I mean, hopefully can get that any day.
- 12:00Speaker 4: But this next one is you know how I don't
- 12:02Speaker 4: know if you guys remember, but a few weeks ago
- 12:04Speaker 4: I was like, I will occasionally bring up ones that
- 12:07Speaker 4: have been mentioned just because they keep coming up, so
- 12:10Speaker 4: just in case other people haven't heard about these.
- 12:13Speaker 5: So this next one is.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Better be good. It better be worth the repeat.
- 12:16Speaker 4: I reckon so in particular with Boost and other places.
- 12:21Speaker 4: I'm sure, like you know any kind of like franchise,
- 12:24Speaker 4: hospitality place will do.
- 12:26Speaker 5: Free food drink.
- 12:28Speaker 2: We have a whole thread in our Facebook group which
- 12:30Speaker 2: you can search in the search bar. Everybody's dumped all
- 12:34Speaker 2: of the hot tips and tricksy places that you didn't
- 12:36Speaker 2: think we're going to be on there too.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Can eat it for free for like a whole day.
- 12:39Speaker 6: It's brilliant. Can I really do that right?
- 12:41Speaker 2: Like one of you needs to take it for the
- 12:43Speaker 2: team and money diary. A whole day of eating for free,
- 12:47Speaker 2: Like it's your birthday. You're going to pancake pile for breakfast,
- 12:50Speaker 2: You're getting a Boost for morning tea, You're going out
- 12:52Speaker 2: to somewhere else for lunch. I want to see dinner.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I also want you to go as far as doing activities,
- 12:58Speaker 2: I know, like time Zone, get through free coins, like,
- 13:01Speaker 2: there are going to be things that you could do
- 13:03Speaker 2: for free, genius.
- 13:05Speaker 6: Fake email, see what we can do it?
- 13:08Speaker 2: Do it, Jess is going to do it.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Obviously, be careful about links you click, but do pay
- 13:13Speaker 4: attention to your drunk folder and around the end up
- 13:15Speaker 4: in there and always end up in there. Ten percent
- 13:17Speaker 4: off random places in So your birthday just brings all
- 13:22Speaker 4: the really really cheap things or great deals.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I love this. So what's next?
- 13:27Speaker 4: Okay, so my yeah, yesterday was at HM with Michael
- 13:31Speaker 4: Franchess and she was buying for a house.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Did you guys?
- 13:37Speaker 4: I didn't know they had a homeware section, but good,
- 13:39Speaker 4: the big one in the city and they haven't.
- 13:42Speaker 2: They nice, really nice.
- 13:43Speaker 5: But we were like walking around.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I was like, my house, your girlfriend, Yes, I love that,
- 13:52Speaker 4: and you know, like sometimes you're just not I was
- 13:53Speaker 4: just so tired, not in the mood.
- 13:55Speaker 5: I was like carrying like all these plates and all
- 13:56Speaker 5: this stuff.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I know where she brought you now exactly. I'm
- 14:01Speaker 2: onto her in my head.
- 14:02Speaker 4: I was like, I really hope she just changed their
- 14:04Speaker 4: mind randomly anyway, and then I saw this side and
- 14:06Speaker 4: that said, on your birthday, get twenty five percent off.
- 14:10Speaker 4: And I said, to her, birthday's coming up in like
- 14:12Speaker 4: two weeks. I was like, oh my god, if you
- 14:13Speaker 4: just come on your birthday, you will get all this sweep. Anyway,
- 14:15Speaker 4: we walked out with nothing, and I was really happy
- 14:17Speaker 4: about going.
- 14:18Speaker 2: We'll be going back on her birthday. On a birthday,
- 14:21Speaker 2: but so you've just found a cheap activity to do
- 14:23Speaker 2: on her birthday. Yes, you're purchasing something, but like that's
- 14:26Speaker 2: a whole like activity, that's the whole morning.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Actually it does last two weeks from the day of
- 14:30Speaker 5: your birthday.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Did I just hear that you've got someone in your
- 14:33Speaker 2: realm of contacts that's got a birthday coming up that
- 14:35Speaker 2: likes free things?
- 14:37Speaker 5: Huh?
- 14:38Speaker 2: I have a later inject for you.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Oh my god, you sure do. Okay, let's well, let's do.
- 14:43Speaker 2: That, all right, content Queen. We'll talk about this later. Yeah, okay,
- 14:46Speaker 2: we'll hit me.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Up nineteenth, which is a day after ninthy October. I'll
- 14:50Speaker 4: be letting you know home, I love that.
- 14:51Speaker 2: I love that happy Burthday in advanced Jess, not this
- 14:54Speaker 2: Jess out of Jess. Yes, I have something to add
- 14:57Speaker 2: to this. Actually, if I have been talking a lot
- 15:00Speaker 2: about the cost of cards, so I hate last minute
- 15:05Speaker 2: forgetting to buy someone a birthday card because, like jess Beck,
- 15:08Speaker 2: if you ever binge walleies and bought a card, right
- 15:11Speaker 2: seven dollars exactly right, that is insane. But recently I
- 15:16Speaker 2: have implemented the birthday book in our house. Okay, so
- 15:19Speaker 2: I went to kmart and I bought these empty books.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So the not the cheapy like activity books or sorry,
- 15:26Speaker 2: like exercise books you'd have for your kids at school,
- 15:29Speaker 2: like something a little fancy. I got like a hard
- 15:30Speaker 2: cover book, and I've written on the front of them
- 15:33Speaker 2: birthday book. One staves one's mind, one is our kid, Harvey's.
- 15:36Speaker 2: And every year, instead of buying each other cards, we're
- 15:39Speaker 2: going to fill out a page in the book and
- 15:40Speaker 2: write each other letters, and that's going to become the cards.
- 15:43Speaker 2: So I foresee us saving a lot of money on cards. Also,
- 15:46Speaker 2: my husband now has no excuse to not get me
- 15:49Speaker 2: a perfectly handwritten note for my birthday slay from me.
- 15:54Speaker 2: But two, isn't that such a cute memory gift? That's
- 15:57Speaker 2: really I was thinking you could literally gift on one
- 16:00Speaker 2: a birthday book, wrap it up, do a first letter.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Make it really cute, and that could be a really
- 16:07Speaker 2: thoughtful birthday present.
- 16:08Speaker 5: That's really cute.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Probably the relationship exactly. It could probably also keep it
- 16:14Speaker 2: as an idea in the back of your head for Christmas.
- 16:17Speaker 5: That's actually fantastic.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Imagine giving that to your partner. And I mean in
- 16:21Speaker 2: the day the.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Front cover of the book, like make it all personal.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, in my head, it works best when that person
- 16:26Speaker 2: lives with you or like is a very close contact,
- 16:29Speaker 2: because like if I bought it for like, you know,
- 16:31Speaker 2: my mum, I'd have to be like, oh, can I
- 16:32Speaker 2: come pick up your birthday book? Like that's I don't
- 16:34Speaker 2: live with her anymore. But for my husband, I know
- 16:37Speaker 2: where it is. I know we all keep it. So
- 16:38Speaker 2: I'll just go sneak that away writing his birthday book
- 16:41Speaker 2: and regift it every single year. But it's got an update.
- 16:44Speaker 2: You could do like some scrap booking things in there.
- 16:46Speaker 2: You could cut and paste some things. I'm just excited
- 16:48Speaker 2: that Harvey is going to get like this book of
- 16:50Speaker 2: letters over his lifetime that I've written for him every
- 16:54Speaker 2: year on his birthday. So cute. That's really really frugal
- 16:57Speaker 2: money tip, I reckon. Oh yeah, awful tip.
- 17:00Speaker 5: I'm thinking I'll do that for likenes. I'm on everything.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Oh you can come like a whole book like It's
- 17:06Speaker 2: not just like for Christmas, it could be for like
- 17:10Speaker 2: any time instead of a letter.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Off note, Oh of love.
- 17:13Speaker 2: No, this idea so cute. That is very very wholesome.
- 17:19Speaker 2: All right, let's go to a really quick break on
- 17:21Speaker 2: the flip side. We're going to be talking about navigating
- 17:24Speaker 2: buying property on your own. And someone asked in our
- 17:27Speaker 2: DMS whether you should be asking for reduced hours at
- 17:30Speaker 2: work to avoid burnout or just pushing through, So don't
- 17:33Speaker 2: go anywhere.
- 17:37Speaker 6: Welcome back, everybody. Let's take a listen to this week's
- 17:40Speaker 6: money dilemma.
- 17:43Speaker 7: Hi, there, have you got a money dilemma you just

- 17:59Speaker 7: just yourself on the show.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Now, let's take a listen to this week's money dilemma.
- 18:06Speaker 8: Hi, She's on the Money. Absolutely love your pod my
- 18:09Speaker 8: boyfriend and I in our thirties and not having kids.
- 18:12Speaker 8: He's buying a house for us both to live in.
- 18:14Speaker 8: I will contribute nothing to the deposit and will not
- 18:17Speaker 8: own any of it. Our idea was that I will
- 18:19Speaker 8: save up to buy my own investment property, and I'm
- 18:21Speaker 8: about two years off having the deposit. My boyfriend has
- 18:25Speaker 8: been charging me cheap rent to live in his apartment
- 18:27Speaker 8: to help me reach my goal. However, I'm crunching the
- 18:30Speaker 8: numbers on a mortgage and I don't see how I
- 18:31Speaker 8: can pull it off alone. Assuming I get rent money
- 18:34Speaker 8: from tenancy in my apartment, which may not even cover
- 18:37Speaker 8: the whole mortgage. I will also be paying rent to
- 18:39Speaker 8: my boyfriend and paying for the strata council.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Rates, water, etc.
- 18:43Speaker 8: From my apartment. If we broke up and I moved out,
- 18:46Speaker 8: I'd have to pay for rent for a place to
- 18:48Speaker 8: live as well as my mortgage. Because I can only
- 18:50Speaker 8: afford an apartment in a random state where I don't live.
- 18:53Speaker 8: I feel like if I buy, I'm barely going to
- 18:55Speaker 8: have any money left over to save or do anything fun.
- 18:58Speaker 8: I feel like it's too hard to do it alone
- 19:00Speaker 8: if I'm not going to be living in the property.
- 19:03Speaker 8: My boyfriend will not budge on the idea of buying
- 19:05Speaker 8: a house alone. I like the idea of investing my
- 19:08Speaker 8: money instead. I already invest in a range of ETFs
- 19:10Speaker 8: and add to this on a regular basis. But is
- 19:13Speaker 8: that a good use of my savings or should I
- 19:15Speaker 8: wait for the future for the mortgage as I get
- 19:17Speaker 8: a pay rise every year? I struggle with the societal
- 19:20Speaker 8: pressure to buy and buy asap. I don't even want to.
- 19:23Speaker 8: What would you advise?
- 19:25Speaker 2: Thanks, Oh, I've got a really easy answer, because she
- 19:28Speaker 2: said she doesn't want to. Don't She said, I'm struggling
- 19:31Speaker 2: with the societal pressure of purchasing a house and I
- 19:34Speaker 2: don't even want to. And I think the simple answer
- 19:36Speaker 2: there is I would be putting the brakes on that
- 19:38Speaker 2: plan at this point, because it's clearly putting a lot
- 19:40Speaker 2: of pressure on you, and you don't even know if
- 19:42Speaker 2: you want to do it properly yet. Unless you're all
- 19:45Speaker 2: in on purchasing property, you should absolutely not be doing it.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Like I'm going to use Just as an example, because
- 19:51Speaker 2: I often use Just as an example of a home buyer. Right,
- 19:54Speaker 2: I know not her inside out, but I know her
- 19:56Speaker 2: property goals inside out, and I know that buying a
- 20:00Speaker 2: property is one of or is her biggest goal at
- 20:03Speaker 2: the moment, right, I don't think that if we said
- 20:06Speaker 2: is it societal pressure, just going to go no, absolutely
- 20:09Speaker 2: not right, Like, that's not it. But it's so a
- 20:12Speaker 2: value to you. And so the extra fees and whatever
- 20:16Speaker 2: cost is being incurred, Jess has allocated for that, and
- 20:19Speaker 2: that's just part of the journey. Whereas this money diarist
- 20:22Speaker 2: or this person who has written in, which is very
- 20:24Speaker 2: kind of you to do so, because I love hearing
- 20:26Speaker 2: from our community, But you've written in and you've said
- 20:28Speaker 2: I don't really know if I want to do this,
- 20:30Speaker 2: And I think that that's where I need to remind
- 20:32Speaker 2: you that you don't have to. And I guess that's
- 20:34Speaker 2: what she's on The money is all about. It's creating
- 20:36Speaker 2: your own journey, writing your own pathway, creating your own narratives.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Like your partner might be fully into property, but you
- 20:43Speaker 2: might go, well, that's not my journey, that's not for me.
- 20:46Speaker 2: What I want is to invest in shares. And like
- 20:49Speaker 2: if we put it down on a piece of paper,
- 20:52Speaker 2: the Australian share market returns more than the Australian property market.
- 20:55Speaker 2: So you're not making a terrible decision when you say,
- 20:57Speaker 2: is that a good use of my savings? Well, only
- 21:00Speaker 2: you can tell me that. I can't say yes unequivocally
- 21:04Speaker 2: because you might go, well, actually, my savings are better
- 21:07Speaker 2: used here and here I recorded a money Darry Actually
- 21:09Speaker 2: before you guys came into the studio to do the
- 21:11Speaker 2: Friday episode, I was talking to the diarist and you
- 21:13Speaker 2: guys will hear this on the show soon. She had
- 21:15Speaker 2: one hundred thousand dollars in savings. Obviously a lot of
- 21:18Speaker 2: context dismissing here, but one hundred thousand dollars in savings
- 21:21Speaker 2: and she had a forty thousand dollars car Loan and
- 21:22Speaker 2: I talked to her about at the end, I said,
- 21:25Speaker 2: I need to know, like, why haven't you just used
- 21:28Speaker 2: your savings to pay down your high interest car loan.
- 21:30Speaker 2: She was like, well, they're giving me a lot of
- 21:32Speaker 2: financial security. They're making me feel really secure, Like my
- 21:36Speaker 2: partner and I want to have a kid in twelve
- 21:38Speaker 2: months or so, and you know we're planning on, you know,
- 21:41Speaker 2: changing our lifestyle. I think just sitting on the cash
- 21:43Speaker 2: for us is working better at the moment, and it
- 21:45Speaker 2: gives us a level of financial security. That's fair, that's
- 21:49Speaker 2: so fair, Like she's happy to pay for her car
- 21:52Speaker 2: loan and my job at she's on the money, or
- 21:55Speaker 2: my self elected job because I did this myself. Right
- 21:57Speaker 2: is to give you every single tool and resource that
- 21:59Speaker 2: you you deserve to make the decision that's right for you,
- 22:02Speaker 2: not on paper what the right decision is. Because if
- 22:05Speaker 2: we'd looked at my money diarrest story on paper, I
- 22:08Speaker 2: think we could all agree forty thousand dollars carload at
- 22:11Speaker 2: more than nine percent interest, Yeah, paid off, but her
- 22:16Speaker 2: values were not that and that's fine, Like there's literally
- 22:20Speaker 2: no judgment. But also I can't tell you whether it's
- 22:23Speaker 2: a good use of your savings because only you can
- 22:25Speaker 2: tell me that. And the only way you're going to
- 22:27Speaker 2: be able to tell me that is if you understand
- 22:29Speaker 2: your values and if you sit down and go, well,
- 22:32Speaker 2: I did say don't want property? Why use that? Why
- 22:34Speaker 2: do I feel this pressure to have property? You've listed
- 22:39Speaker 2: off all of these negative examples you didn't give me
- 22:41Speaker 2: in that message. One positive. You didn't say, I'd really
- 22:45Speaker 2: love property, give me a sense of freedom. You didn't
- 22:48Speaker 2: say any of that. You just said, my partner's buying
- 22:51Speaker 2: I'm going to buy or have a deposit in two years,
- 22:53Speaker 2: and hear all the negatives, I'll have to pay this, this,
- 22:55Speaker 2: this and this, and here's the bad outcome if we
- 22:57Speaker 2: break up. Like anyway, I'm sorry to have in there.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I just felt like im that was so driven by
- 23:05Speaker 2: the pressure that you feel to own property, not the reality,
- 23:08Speaker 2: which is you probably don't want that. And a share
- 23:10Speaker 2: portfolio sounds like it's going to work for you because
- 23:12Speaker 2: that's what you said you were interested in totally.
- 23:15Speaker 4: I was just going to say, like, obviously, I'm not
- 23:18Speaker 4: in this position, so I'm not the best to give advice,
- 23:20Speaker 4: but I just think if you're doing anything because of
- 23:24Speaker 4: some arbitrary societal rule, you will forever just be so
- 23:29Speaker 4: deeply unhappy. If I was following every societal rule and
- 23:32Speaker 4: you guys were as well, Like I would be in
- 23:35Speaker 4: a dress right now, and I would be, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 4: just like all dress.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I'd be so confused.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Things would be wrong, things would be very wrong.
- 23:42Speaker 4: It just like, yeah, all these things would just like
- 23:47Speaker 4: that that make you inherently happy because of your own
- 23:49Speaker 4: personal preference. You don't need any societal pressure.
- 23:52Speaker 2: To do he would you be making happy people that
- 23:55Speaker 2: don't know.
- 23:56Speaker 4: You exist, you know exactly. The people in your world
- 24:00Speaker 4: that love you don't care about that stuff. So I think, like,
- 24:03Speaker 4: if you don't feel the urge to buy a property
- 24:07Speaker 4: inside yourself, like you don't feel that craving, then I
- 24:10Speaker 4: would just not do it and say that because a
- 24:12Speaker 4: lot of people I feel like a lot of people
- 24:14Speaker 4: and hopefully it's not as popular or like sorry, not
- 24:17Speaker 4: as common anymore. But women who want to leave their
- 24:19Speaker 4: husbands maybe can't because financially they don't have the ability to.
- 24:22Speaker 4: But if you have that there, and you know, touch wood,
- 24:25Speaker 4: something happens in the future and you break up and
- 24:28Speaker 4: you have all that money and you're like, I need
- 24:30Speaker 4: to live by myself. Now you are able to buy
- 24:32Speaker 4: yourself a little, one bitter apartment in a place. And
- 24:34Speaker 4: I think that this person also said that they wouldn't
- 24:37Speaker 4: be able to afford to live in the place they
- 24:38Speaker 4: want to live.
- 24:39Speaker 6: Yeah, it sounds like they would rent best.
- 24:40Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 4: So I'm like, if you have all that money, you
- 24:42Speaker 4: might be able to stay in the place that you
- 24:44Speaker 4: want to stay, and you'd be able to be fully
- 24:46Speaker 4: financially independent because you do have this money.
- 24:48Speaker 5: I so keep saving it.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Don't buy, And I feel like investment property means it's
- 24:53Speaker 4: investing in you know, you're like, you're better in your
- 24:56Speaker 4: financial future, but I.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Just but it should be better in your life in well, yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 2: I just I think so that you don't have to
- 25:03Speaker 2: do that.
- 25:03Speaker 5: You shouldn't have to do that to make it.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Taylor Swift like, you can reinvent yourself. Like if you
- 25:09Speaker 2: are in a situation where you're like, I just don't
- 25:11Speaker 2: want to buy right now, doesn't mean you can't change
- 25:13Speaker 2: your mind. She was country queen right and then she
- 25:16Speaker 2: went to being pop icon. She changed, She decided she
- 25:19Speaker 2: wanted to do something different and just did it. So
- 25:21Speaker 2: you just do that later if you choose to change
- 25:23Speaker 2: your mind, if you go, well, I don't want to
- 25:25Speaker 2: buy property, don't even a few years, as you said,
- 25:27Speaker 2: you're going to get a pay rise every year. If
- 25:29Speaker 2: in a few years that's really financially viable, and you're like, oh,
- 25:31Speaker 2: I'm into this.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Now do it then totally.
- 25:33Speaker 2: But you know what you've done, You've given yourself the
- 25:35Speaker 2: financial freedom to make that decision at that point by
- 25:38Speaker 2: investing along the way.
- 25:39Speaker 5: Exactly, Just what would you do?
- 25:41Speaker 6: I yeah, I can, like I would buy the property.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Nobody completely agree with what you're both saying is that
- 25:47Speaker 6: you need to make a choice. It's right for you,
- 25:48Speaker 6: and anyone who loves you is not going to pressure
- 25:50Speaker 6: you into making a decision. My best guess would be
- 25:54Speaker 6: maybe that your partner thinks that they're helping you get ahead,
- 25:58Speaker 6: Like maybe they've got kind of a plan in their
- 26:00Speaker 6: mind and they're not seeing that it's not, you know,
- 26:04Speaker 6: the giving you cheap rent and stuff like. In their minds,
- 26:06Speaker 6: they might be thinking that they're furthering you so that
- 26:09Speaker 6: you can have your own property and I'm going to
- 26:11Speaker 6: have give you a say, well yeah, like and maybe
- 26:14Speaker 6: in their mind that gives you a bigger sense to
- 26:15Speaker 6: each own your own property so that if something does happen,
- 26:19Speaker 6: you both have something. Maybe that's where they're coming from.
- 26:21Speaker 6: But if they love you, of course they're not going
- 26:23Speaker 6: to want you to do something you don't want to.
- 26:25Speaker 6: So I think like having that conversation with them, and
- 26:28Speaker 6: then on a broader scale, maybe you know, saying to them, hey, like,
- 26:31Speaker 6: I understand that maybe you were trying to help me
- 26:33Speaker 6: get ahead by giving me a cheaper rent, or by
- 26:35Speaker 6: covering these bills or whatever, so that I could achieve
- 26:38Speaker 6: that part of you know, kind of plan that you
- 26:41Speaker 6: maybe thought that we would have or that would be
- 26:43Speaker 6: great for us. If that's not what I want to do,
- 26:45Speaker 6: Like I'm so happy to be an equal partner, Like
- 26:47Speaker 6: I'll pay market value rent, like I will split things.
- 26:50Speaker 6: We can put you know, a BFA or some kind
- 26:52Speaker 6: of agreement in place to protect your property that you have,
- 26:55Speaker 6: because maybe that's a point of concern for them. So
- 26:58Speaker 6: I think maybe you know, being grateful that they want
- 27:01Speaker 6: to help you get ahead, because I'm hoping that that's
- 27:03Speaker 6: where that's coming from, but also explaining to them that's
- 27:06Speaker 6: not what you want and that's okay. Like, if you
- 27:08Speaker 6: don't want to buy a property, do not buy a property.
- 27:10Speaker 6: It's a lot of work like having and maybe I'll
- 27:12Speaker 6: change my mind later. It's not completely off the table,
- 27:15Speaker 6: No thing is. But maybe I'm just not here on
- 27:19Speaker 6: the same journey as you, and that's actually so fine. Yeah,
- 27:21Speaker 6: investing in shares is also a great investment option if
- 27:24Speaker 6: that's more aligned to you. It's your money, and ultimately
- 27:26Speaker 6: you have to do what feels right for what you
- 27:28Speaker 6: want and what feels good, and I think just communicating
- 27:31Speaker 6: that to your partner, and you're being prepared to find
- 27:33Speaker 6: a middle ground in terms of the living situation might
- 27:36Speaker 6: be the best way to go. Completely agree with you,
- 27:40Speaker 6: amazing should get to this these money Oh.
- 27:42Speaker 2: My gosh, Yes, I have been waiting for this one.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Are you ready?
- 27:45Speaker 6: Absolutely?
- 27:46Speaker 2: Okay, Hi, she's on the money team.
- 27:48Speaker 5: I have a DM for you.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I'm currently in my first year of full time work
- 27:52Speaker 2: and it's been so hard transitioning into it and I
- 27:54Speaker 2: am exhausted. I'm currently undergoing ADHD and autism diagnosis. I've
- 27:59Speaker 2: gotten to a point where I'm on the brink of
- 28:01Speaker 2: burnout and i want to ask for my contracted hours
- 28:04Speaker 2: to reduce two hours per week to have a nine
- 28:06Speaker 2: day fortnight. I already work longer hours during the week
- 28:10Speaker 2: to have a shorter day on Fridays, so I'm not
- 28:13Speaker 2: bothered by longer hours to have an ido. Financially, I
- 28:17Speaker 2: can cop one hundred and fifty less ish a fortnight.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I also know of older people in the business with
- 28:23Speaker 2: part time or four day contracts, but I'm really worried
- 28:26Speaker 2: about the prejudice and judgment that might come with this decision,
- 28:29Speaker 2: as I have no dependence and have mentioned struggles. But
- 28:32Speaker 2: most people say, just push through it. I feel like
- 28:36Speaker 2: my reasoning may limit me in progressing in my career.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I'm in engineering. Do you have any advice on this?
- 28:43Speaker 4: My god, this has been such a thing for me
- 28:46Speaker 4: this week in particular, but always it is my biggest thing.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Four day work week because I think sure back in
- 28:53Speaker 4: the day, in the year older times when one person
- 28:57Speaker 4: would work, usually a man and the woman, and would
- 29:00Speaker 4: stay home usually with the children, do all the house stuff,
- 29:03Speaker 4: so both parties working full time, but kind of like
- 29:06Speaker 4: tackling different things.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Now, yeah, you can just say it how it was.
- 29:09Speaker 4: Yeah, Well now it's like one person you've got to do,
- 29:13Speaker 4: say Friday, Sabbath day of rest. Well, you cannot anymore
- 29:18Speaker 4: because you have Friday. Maybe you go out, maybe you don't,
- 29:21Speaker 4: but that day is taken up by work, let's be honest.
- 29:23Speaker 4: And then Saturday is one day where you don't have
- 29:25Speaker 4: work the day or the day after, so you can
- 29:28Speaker 4: maybe have some fun with your friends. Sunday, maybe you're resting,
- 29:31Speaker 4: but you'll still got to go to the laundry, the church,
- 29:34Speaker 4: the kids church. That day you do, but you've got
- 29:37Speaker 4: all the life addamin, all the chores, everything that you
- 29:39Speaker 4: weren't able to get done. Also, a lot of businesses
- 29:42Speaker 4: are closed on that day, so you you just where
- 29:45Speaker 4: do you find time? Anyway, a four day work week,
- 29:48Speaker 4: a three day weekend is probably essential at this stage,
- 29:53Speaker 4: I would say.
- 29:54Speaker 5: But also I don't want to be that person.
- 29:56Speaker 4: You know, everyone does have a different level of on
- 30:00Speaker 4: your workload, depends on your work depends on so many things.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and like on the flip side, someone else might go,
- 30:04Speaker 2: I don't want to have to do ten hour days.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I'd much prefer to spread that across five days. I mean,
- 30:08Speaker 2: each to their own. But I do believe in flexibility
- 30:11Speaker 2: where it makes sense. Jess, what would you do?
- 30:14Speaker 6: I think that I totally understand where they're coming from, because, firstly, congratulations,
- 30:19Speaker 6: I'm working towards your formal identification of being somewhere on
- 30:23Speaker 6: the spectrum. That's very exciting, even though it can feel
- 30:25Speaker 6: very intimidating as well. But I think that firstly, it's
- 30:29Speaker 6: really important to note that within like fair work legislation,
- 30:31Speaker 6: there is literally like legalities that prevent you from being
- 30:34Speaker 6: discriminated against because of different abilities, different things like that.
- 30:39Speaker 6: And so if there is a concession that is needed
- 30:41Speaker 6: for you as a part of your formal diagnosis, and
- 30:44Speaker 6: you can have a doctor, a psychologist who you're seeing psychiatrists, sorry,
- 30:49Speaker 6: provide some evidence of that. It actually can't be denied.
- 30:53Speaker 6: You know, there's a lot of nuance there. Like I'm
- 30:54Speaker 6: being very general with that, but you know, if you
- 30:57Speaker 6: need something to be able to facilitate your job, and
- 30:58Speaker 6: it is able to be facilitated, which it sounds like
- 31:01Speaker 6: it can be because you said there's the people on
- 31:03Speaker 6: the four day contracts and part time contracts and stuff,
- 31:07Speaker 6: it should be an option for you, just in terms
- 31:09Speaker 6: of being allowed. I know that our listener's bigger issue
- 31:14Speaker 6: was the bias that they might encounter in the workplace,
- 31:17Speaker 6: and that is a much trickier beast. I would say
- 31:20Speaker 6: that I think society has come a long way in
- 31:23Speaker 6: being respectful and understanding of the fact that really we
- 31:25Speaker 6: all exist somewhere on a spectrum and everyone has different
- 31:28Speaker 6: needs and different preferences and different things. None of us fit.
- 31:31Speaker 6: The MA team is so neurospiasedally, and I think like
- 31:35Speaker 6: the fact that the standard traditional nine to five, five
- 31:37Speaker 6: day workweek was invented, however many years ago, when people
- 31:42Speaker 6: were literally working in almost like favery, men men specifically,
- 31:47Speaker 6: like even just things like.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Pyomen shouldn't have jobs, No, a job is seen the home.
- 31:51Speaker 6: Yes, you know, I think that I completely agree. It
- 31:53Speaker 6: is a very like outdated way, and I think that
- 31:55Speaker 6: a lot of workplaces really are working towards being more
- 31:59Speaker 6: flexible and more compromising, and so are people individually. Like
- 32:02Speaker 6: if you ask anyone in this room, for example, if
- 32:04Speaker 6: that was a problem, not one of us would any
- 32:06Speaker 6: But I do understand when you're in a corporate space,
- 32:08Speaker 6: and particularly if you're in the engineering space, which is
- 32:11Speaker 6: a male dominated industry, you might already be facing some
- 32:14Speaker 6: challenges there around biases and things like that. I totally
- 32:18Speaker 6: get the concern, but I think ultimately burnout is so
- 32:23Speaker 6: damaging to you, like mentally, physically, emotionally. I would say
- 32:28Speaker 6: that to not have to suffer through that, it is
- 32:32Speaker 6: almost worth the risk of coming up against a few people, because.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Like, if you just suffer through it, you might end
- 32:39Speaker 2: up losing your job completely, Like you might not be
- 32:43Speaker 2: able to work. And I don't mean to be too dramatic,
- 32:45Speaker 2: but you might end up in a really bad situation
- 32:48Speaker 2: that has a bad outcome, and that's not what you want.
- 32:51Speaker 2: So why not ask and kind of buite it in
- 32:53Speaker 2: the bar. The other thing I wanted to talk about
- 32:55Speaker 2: here was sick leave. So like, your mental health is
- 32:59Speaker 2: your health, and your health is supported by your sick leave.
- 33:03Speaker 2: So if you need to take some sick leave and go,
- 33:06Speaker 2: you know what, I need a few days, or I
- 33:07Speaker 2: need a day here and there for my mental health,
- 33:10Speaker 2: that is so valid. Like I feel like businesses nowadays
- 33:13Speaker 2: are trying to carve out oh, we have mental health leave,
- 33:15Speaker 2: and honestly, I think that's bullshit. Because you have sick
- 33:19Speaker 2: leave that you should be able to use for your
- 33:22Speaker 2: mental health. Like from a business owner's perspective, if someone
- 33:29Speaker 2: in my team says I'm not well today, I'm not
- 33:31Speaker 2: coming into work. That is not my business. Legally, it's
- 33:34Speaker 2: not my business. I do not ask for six certificates.
- 33:38Speaker 2: I'm not saying that that's across the board, but for
- 33:40Speaker 2: one day here or there. Even if you need a
- 33:43Speaker 2: six certificate, you could go to your GP and say
- 33:45Speaker 2: it's mental health leave, and your doctor is going to
- 33:47Speaker 2: write exactly the same sick certificate for your mental health
- 33:52Speaker 2: as they are for you having the flu, saying sorry,
- 33:55Speaker 2: Jessica's unable to come to work, and she can resume
- 33:58Speaker 2: her normal duties as off Monday. Yeah, like, it's not
- 34:01Speaker 2: I promise you. Your mental health is so important you
- 34:04Speaker 2: don't even have to go to your boss and have
- 34:06Speaker 2: this conversation. Yet as somebody who is neurospicy being in
- 34:09Speaker 2: the throes of it, there's a lot that you're going
- 34:12Speaker 2: to learn about managing your health right now. Maybe as
- 34:16Speaker 2: an interim measure, you could use some of your sick
- 34:18Speaker 2: days take some pressure off. Maybe even talk to your
- 34:21Speaker 2: boss and be like, hey, don't know how transparent you
- 34:23Speaker 2: want to be. Hey, I am not dealing well with
- 34:27Speaker 2: a health diagnosis that I am currently in the midst
- 34:29Speaker 2: of none of their business. Is there a way that
- 34:32Speaker 2: I could for the next three Fridays have a sick day.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I know that people don't usually plan sick days in advance,
- 34:38Speaker 2: but like that's what they are for. I don't want
- 34:40Speaker 2: to get too much into it. And after that we
- 34:42Speaker 2: can review and hopefully I can return to normal. If not,
- 34:45Speaker 2: we can discuss it. Then it's giving your boss or
- 34:47Speaker 2: heads up. You can kind of test the waters you're using.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Sek leave you should be allowed to, And I mean
- 34:51Speaker 2: at the end of the day, if they say no
- 34:53Speaker 2: to taking sick leave fair work issue, so I really
- 34:56Speaker 2: doubt that they're going to do that. And to be honest,
- 34:59Speaker 2: if was going through something similar, I say Jess all
- 35:02Speaker 2: the time because she literally reports to me, whereaspec you
- 35:05Speaker 2: work for the podcast, but you work nine to five
- 35:07Speaker 2: somewhere else. So if Jess came to me and said, hey,
- 35:10Speaker 2: you know, she'd probably tell me the juicy deets. Let's
- 35:12Speaker 2: be honest. But that's a friend thing, not an employer thing.
- 35:16Speaker 2: But if she said I need to take time off
- 35:18Speaker 2: as an employer far out, I'm so grateful that she's
- 35:21Speaker 2: not curling me for the next three weeks on a
- 35:23Speaker 2: Thursday night being like, hey, I'm going to be sick tomorrow, Like,
- 35:27Speaker 2: thank you for the plan around burning. I can plan
- 35:29Speaker 2: around it. I can go all right, Jess, you can
- 35:32Speaker 2: have the Fridays off for the next few weeks, sick leave,
- 35:34Speaker 2: no worries. Let's just make sure A, B and C
- 35:36Speaker 2: you're done, because they're no one's dressed, how good. So
- 35:40Speaker 2: maybe there's like a workaround, but I think make sure
- 35:43Speaker 2: that you're leaning, especially on stuff like this, lean on
- 35:46Speaker 2: your sick leave. It is there to be used and
- 35:49Speaker 2: I'm not saying like you've use it, but like it
- 35:51Speaker 2: sounds like you actually need a few days off because
- 35:53Speaker 2: if you're close to burn out, you're sitch yeah.
- 35:55Speaker 6: And then if you maybe if you do it that way,
- 35:57Speaker 6: you'll be able to say, hey, like everything functioned well.
- 36:00Speaker 6: I was able to complete my work during the week,
- 36:02Speaker 6: Like the sky didn't fall in when I took those
- 36:03Speaker 6: fridays off. Can we look at moving that to a
- 36:06Speaker 6: long term solution where I work a four day work week.
- 36:09Speaker 6: We've seen that it works, yeah, and that's you know,
- 36:12Speaker 6: it's been really beneficial for me, and I think that
- 36:14Speaker 6: that's really going to help me avoid burnout work at
- 36:17Speaker 6: my ultimate.
- 36:18Speaker 2: You know level performance exactly.
- 36:20Speaker 6: Because ultimately that's what the workplace wants, right. So I
- 36:23Speaker 6: think if you can demonstrate that and maybe that is
- 36:25Speaker 6: a good way to broach it gently if you're feeling
- 36:27Speaker 6: a bit nervous about it, but also.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Take the pressure of immediately Like I think you're thinking
- 36:31Speaker 2: really long term about this because you're currently feeling like
- 36:34Speaker 2: you're headed towards burner. I get long terms really important,
- 36:37Speaker 2: But what can you do in the here and now
- 36:39Speaker 2: without setting in place a formal structure which I promise
- 36:43Speaker 2: is going to take a bit of time. If you
- 36:45Speaker 2: said you're in engineering, I can almost guarantee they're a
- 36:47Speaker 2: little bit behind. So getting something like that across the
- 36:49Speaker 2: table is going to be challenging. But I would lean
- 36:53Speaker 2: on your sick leave at the start and then go
- 36:54Speaker 2: from there whatever else. Of course, we went to the
- 36:58Speaker 2: community asked their two cents. But first we said, would
- 37:00Speaker 2: you feel confident asking for a few hours at work? Interestingly,
- 37:04Speaker 2: eighteen percent of you said only if I had kids.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Sixty percent of you said absolutely, my well being matters,
- 37:11Speaker 2: Yes it does, queens, and twenty two percent of you
- 37:13Speaker 2: said no, way, wouldn't feel comfortable. The next question we
- 37:17Speaker 2: asked was what do you think about the advice to
- 37:19Speaker 2: just push through?
- 37:20Speaker 6: Hate it? Sorry, did we even address at all? I
- 37:23Speaker 6: hate it?
- 37:24Speaker 2: And you're good because eighty one percent of our community said,
- 37:28Speaker 2: terrible advice, terrible, terrible.
- 37:31Speaker 7: Nineteen percent of you said that's how I'd handle it.
- 37:34Speaker 7: Don't do that, okay, big dog, you just handle it.
- 37:38Speaker 2: That's terrible. You're the person that's going to head towards
- 37:40Speaker 2: burnout and burn out harder. So one out of ten
- 37:44Speaker 2: don't recommend that. And then obviously we said, girl, what
- 37:47Speaker 2: are your two cents? And you had some thoughts. Someone said,
- 37:52Speaker 2: I'm about to navigate this. I'll be actually asking my
- 37:55Speaker 2: GP for a medical certificate to help support me. Cool genius.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Someone else said, I reduced to nine days a fortnight
- 38:02Speaker 2: as a thirty year old. I love life now. It
- 38:05Speaker 2: was actually essential for my mental health. Someone else said,
- 38:09Speaker 2: you can just call fair Work and ask for advice
- 38:11Speaker 2: on advocating for reasonable accommodations. That is great advice. There
- 38:15Speaker 2: is so much support, Like you don't have to go
- 38:18Speaker 2: to your HR department or your boss, Like you can
- 38:20Speaker 2: work out what's feasible first, because that's power. Like imagine
- 38:25Speaker 2: getting to walk in and then they go not possible,
- 38:27Speaker 2: and you go, oh, I hate to do this, but
- 38:28Speaker 2: legally you have to work with me. Like I don't
- 38:31Speaker 2: want to be that guy, but I do know my rights.
- 38:34Speaker 6: I'm great to have like a record or a document
- 38:36Speaker 6: that you've spoken to Fair Work because if anything does
- 38:38Speaker 6: go wrong and you do need to lean on that
- 38:40Speaker 6: you can say, well, I was proactive, I took that
- 38:42Speaker 6: approach ahead of time.
- 38:43Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. Someone else said, empathizing with you, I'm also
- 38:47Speaker 2: are you DHD? And I find the five day work week,
- 38:51Speaker 2: a lot, no advice, just lots of empathy. You guys
- 38:54Speaker 2: both raised eyebrows. That is a combination of autistic and
- 38:58Speaker 2: ADHD together, which comorbidity in those conditions is incredibly high. Right,
- 39:04Speaker 2: kind of cool though, Yeah, when you're a little bit nearer,
- 39:06Speaker 2: spicy runs deep. I was laughing because, like a couple
- 39:09Speaker 2: of my friends diagnote complete side note, I am ADHD.
- 39:14Speaker 2: I haven't been diagnosed with anything else. But a couple
- 39:16Speaker 2: of my friends who've been diagnosed with ADHD got their medication,
- 39:20Speaker 2: started taking their medication, and then realized they were also autistic,
- 39:24Speaker 2: which is not funny, but it is quite funny because
- 39:27Speaker 2: like your ADHD symptoms off the mask, what else is
- 39:30Speaker 2: going on short out the ADHD and you're like, oh,
- 39:32Speaker 2: there's another thing hiding under here. Really really common. Someone
- 39:37Speaker 2: else said, don't over explain, make the request and provide
- 39:40Speaker 2: just enough information.
- 39:41Speaker 6: Fair you only have to share what you're company with.
- 39:43Speaker 2: And then someone else said, I thought this was quite funny.
- 39:46Speaker 2: She said, it is terrible advice to just push through,
- 39:49Speaker 2: but let's be honest, that's how i'd handle it.
- 39:51Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, I know, I get that.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like so many of us do that,
- 39:55Speaker 2: but you don't have to put yourself first. You're impacting
- 39:58Speaker 2: so many parts of your life by not making sure
- 40:01Speaker 2: that you're well. Like if you're not well, how are
- 40:04Speaker 2: you giving your best? You can't pull from an empty
- 40:06Speaker 2: cup completely. Someone else said, I asked to drop from
- 40:09Speaker 2: five days to three and a half days a week,
- 40:11Speaker 2: and it has mentally saved me. Someone else said, I
- 40:14Speaker 2: love this advice you don't ask, you don't get.
- 40:17Speaker 6: Should we need to put that on a T shirt? Yeah?
- 40:19Speaker 6: Really need to be somewhere.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Exactly, And I feel like that's probably a good place
- 40:23Speaker 2: to leave it, to be honest, Like, you don't ask,
- 40:25Speaker 2: you don't get?
- 40:26Speaker 4: Yeah, very true that the anxiety around asking and feeling
- 40:30Speaker 4: like crap after even if you whether you got your
- 40:32Speaker 4: way or not, that'll fade.
- 40:34Speaker 2: And you'll be left with a beautiful nine day, fortnight exactly.
- 40:38Speaker 2: But also I think defining here what anxiety is, anxiety
- 40:43Speaker 2: is the fear of the unknown, right, Like anxiety is
- 40:46Speaker 2: being worried about something that might not happen, Like, as
- 40:50Speaker 2: I've said on this podcast before, what's the worst thing
- 40:53Speaker 2: that never happened to you? And I think that helps
- 40:56Speaker 2: me a lot because as somebody who takes anti anxiety medication.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I feel like I'm very well spoken in this space,
- 41:02Speaker 2: but often we ruminate in our own heads and make
- 41:06Speaker 2: things much bigger than they actually are, and I mean
- 41:08Speaker 2: they're way worse at three am, right. But I think
- 41:11Speaker 2: the most important thing here is do all your research,
- 41:13Speaker 2: because the more information and the more education you have
- 41:15Speaker 2: about this, the more power you're going to have. So
- 41:17Speaker 2: talk to fair work, do some research background, read some
- 41:20Speaker 2: forums online about what there is available to you, and again,
- 41:24Speaker 2: lean on your sick cleave. It's there for you when
- 41:28Speaker 2: you're not well, and you're telling me that you're heading
- 41:31Speaker 2: towards burnout. So that's where we'll leave it. I hope
- 41:34Speaker 2: you guys have a beautiful weekend. I'll see you in
- 41:36Speaker 2: the morning for a little solo episode and then also
- 41:40Speaker 2: on Monday, bright and early for a money diary. So
- 41:42Speaker 2: have a good weekend, guys.
- 41:43Speaker 5: We love you, Bye guys.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Cy.
