- 0:02SPEAKER_04: We have with us a lady who is dropping specials.
- 0:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, she's special, but she's dropping specials.
- 0:10SPEAKER_04: Special ed.
- 0:11SPEAKER_04: No, no.
- 0:12SPEAKER_04: She's special Susie.
- 0:14SPEAKER_04: Susie Chicago.
- 0:15SPEAKER_04: Welcome to the show.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: Thanks for having me.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: Thanks for coming up.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: It's really nice.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: I've been on a few podcasts lately, and I have a podcast, and it's really nice to be the guest.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Well, tell us about your podcast.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Like, where can we find you on your podcast?
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Okay, my podcast is on YouTube and Spotify and all those streaming things.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: And I'm on YouTube.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: It's called the Suzy Chicago Podcast.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Um, we thought we'd keep it simple.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: You know, when you get to be my age, we got to kind of streamline things.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: So I'm on Instagram, I'm Suzy Chicago.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: On Facebook, I'm Suzy Chicago.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: No, on Facebook, I'm not, but that's my private one.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: TikTok, I'm Suzy Chicago.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: I have a YouTube channel, Suzy Chicago, you know, install.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: And I am not.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: She's from Chicago?
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: No, she's from Iowa.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: No, she's from Cleveland.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: I am from Chicago.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Born and raised, almost born at Wrigley Field, actually.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Beautiful there.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Um I love it.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: I love Chicago.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I do too.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: In fact, um John Mullaney just did a 45,000 uh sold-out show at Wrigley Field.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Well, we were just talking before about Shane Gillis did 72,000.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: He killed it, man.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: But I just went to see uh Nate Bargazzi the other day.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: That's what I wanted to ask you about.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: So I would say America's sweetheart is Nate Vargazzi.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: How was that?
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Well, we had almost front row seats.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: So that was pretty cool.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: But he's in the round, and I actually prefer comedy in I don't not a dive, but I like it when we're more intimate.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: So it felt like a rock concert without a rock band.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: And um, he was fantastic.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: And he and he works in the round.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: So the thing about the round is you see people's asses for half the show.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: And not everybody has a good ass.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: And uh, but he had uh Nick Novicki, who is a friend of mine, he's been on the podcast, he lives in LA.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Okay, and he's a little person, and so he did a ton of little person jokes, were just were killing me.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: And then uh Julia McCullough is always his uh opener, and then my friend Trish Sur, who is also in LA, she just opened for Nate uh on five shows.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Whoa.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Talk about a dream come true.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: That's amazing.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Anyway, um so it was a great show.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: It was a great show.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Um getting in and out of there was nuts though.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: When you get where was it?
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: It was at the uh UCSD Pachenga Arena Arena.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: It was 15,000 seats.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: They said they the guy who was with us said, I've never seen I'm not with us that we met, said I've never seen it this sold out.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: So Nate really he did it.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: I agree though, the round is a an interesting thing.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: Like I've seen Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan do the round, and and they know how to do it.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Like because I don't know what that is.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: So it's when the they're they put the stage in the middle of the arena, and then everybody's around them.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: So it's almost like a UFC fight or like a WWE fight.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's pretty neat.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so that way you I think probably you can fit more people in, is the idea.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: So you can.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: You can be a much bigger space, right?
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: And Nick Novicki, who not only is a little person but he has sight problems.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Oh so Nate is always worried about and telling him, don't go near the edge of the stage, stay and they'll make a small circle, Nick.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so anyway, but it was it was a great.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: I laughed pretty much nonstop for an hour.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: But it's interesting to see some of the openers when they're in the round because it's I I think it's uncomfortable because you're not sure to who to look at.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: And then and then I think some people get in a habit of walking in a circle instead of like just Chappelle just like stands there, he owns it, and he'll back in and he'll look at somebody and then he'll stop, he'll look at the front, and then he backs around it.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So he doesn't move too terribly much, though.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: Right, but he he's more staying in the center and then he kind of like maneuvers where he's looking around at people.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: Rogan uses the whole stage.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: Uh he's very, you know, athletic about it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: I would say uh Dane Cook is very athletic about it.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Very I tried that out, like making sure I use the entirety of the stage.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: I hated it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you will you have breathing problems.
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: I love sitting still.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: That's a good point.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: Yes, ma'am.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: I have COPD.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: And it's not my fault.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: Tell her tell her what it stands for.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Our previous guest that came in and uh I was a little late, so I was like, you know, COPD's kicking my ass this morning.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, and he was like, What police department?
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: That's what people would ask me.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you that.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so Nate did not pivot like Chappelle does.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Nate did use the whole stage.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Um, what I thought about as a comic, and you guys probably think about this too.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: I'm sitting there and there's 15,000 people.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Maybe he does it 150 times a year, maybe 200 times.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Imagine having that.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: You know, I have five fans.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: I can't imagine 15,000 people night after night.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: And still being grounded.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: I'd be floating.
- 4:58SPEAKER_04: I think part of the challenges when you get to that level, so I heard not that we're there, but God willing, uh, is that it's hard to keep relatable comedy because once you get to that certain aspirational level, it's very hard because people don't believe that you're not as like you're not at that level.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: But then also, you know, you can't how many jokes can you talk about like flying on an airplane or a private plane or like you know, traveling for your job, which is comedy, you know.
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, it it starts to get more difficult.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: So, like, for instance, I just saw David Spade uh at Newport Beach.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: He's great, but I will say, uh hope he doesn't watch it like I'm being mean or something.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: I saw him at the store.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: He stunk the place up.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: Oh, I've seen him two other places, I've seen him in Vegas, I've seen him in Irving Improv, and he's killed.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: Honestly, I I I find him very, very funny.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: But he, in my opinion, so he he he has my understanding is he has a second home in Newport Beach, and he was doing the it was in Newport where he was doing the show, and he was talking about how long it took for him to drive from LA, which actually was a very funny joke because he's like, they tell you it's like an hour to get from LA to Newport.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: He's like, after an hour, he's like, I'm like, are we there yet?
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: They're like, no, we're at LAX.
- 6:08SPEAKER_04: Now you have to get it on a hiking trail and you have to go.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: And it's so it's clever, you know.
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: But I thought if you would have leaned into the fact that he has a second home here, I think the crowd would have been on his side, you know.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but he was kind of, I felt like he was kind of going between this like, I'm just like you, versus uh, oh, I had a guy come out to me, me like, oh, you're David Spade.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: Let me give you my movie idea pitch.
- 6:29SPEAKER_04: And it's so it was kind of a little bit disconnected that way, but I don't blame the situation because that's his life, you know.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: I mean, he has relatable situations, but he also is David Spade, and people are coming up to talk to him about it, you know.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: So I would lean into that, yeah.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: But I'm saying pick a lane, like pick a lane.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Well, what I mean to say is like obviously rich people problems, right?
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I would lean into that and try and find a way to relate it to people who uh aren't so fortunate.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I think that would kill.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, and I have a problem.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: I say I have resting rich face.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: I mean everybody thinks that I am rich.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is the rumor going around San Diego comedy that I'm this rich lady.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, really?
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: I'm still working, I still run our company.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: You're rich with stories.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: I am rich with life, baby.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: But anyway, but Nate was very relatable.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Uh he's a simple guy in many, many ways, and I think um that had something to do with it.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, you just talked about going to therapy, which I was nudging my husband the whole time.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: He wasn't nudging me back.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: And uh he just talked about everyday stuff, and it wasn't flying on a plane or whatever, but really I have to say that he's still gonna be America's sweet if he just keeps doing this.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: You know, he finds the funny and the easiest things.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: You you know what he's trying to do, though.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: He's trying to create basically Dollywood Dollywood, but it's called Nateland.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: I'm ready.
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, in Nashville.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: So I have another friend named JJ.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: I know, I've seen you talk about yeah, and it's crazy because she likes to do crafting.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: We did a whole thing on crafting.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: I'm so jealous.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: I'm so jealous.
- 8:08SPEAKER_04: I love crafting.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: Well, then let's come and do okay.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: So we did comedi, we haven't released it.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: We did comedians and crafts having coffee.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Sorry, Jerry.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: But um, and um and and she uh promised me we're gonna I'm gonna go to some shows in Nashville.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: That's amazing.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: And I'm she's promised to go to Dollywood with me because no one in my whole life wants to go to Dollywood.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, I have asked people for years, and they're like, uh, what are you not saying?
- 8:33SPEAKER_04: Can I can I give you a hot tip?
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: So south of Nashville, Dolly has created her own like version of Bucky's.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: Yes, she has a truck stop, and JJ was there for the opening.
- 8:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's yes, yeah, yeah.
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: She's she's amazing.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: She's a great businesswoman, bunny as hell, too.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: She comes up with the funniest, like someone's like, Well, it costs a lot of money to look this cheap.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: Like, that's pretty good.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: That is pretty good.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she has a lot of those kinds of little quips.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: And I'm a big Dolly fan, love her music.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: I've well, I've always loved country music, and coming from Chicago, people are like, What is wrong with you?
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Why do you like that music?
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: I grew up in the South.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: I can't stand country music.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a lot of people can't stand it.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: I like a lot of music though.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, I have a variety.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Well, Chicago actually has a big jazz scene too.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Huge jazz, blues, uh, old town school of folk music.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: I used to go there all the time, bluegrass.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Uh and then there's the uh Green Tavern, and they they have great acts come through there.
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: I don't remember what jazz club I went to in Chicago, but it had two stages, and it was like divided by a wall.
- 9:33SPEAKER_04: Green tavern.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: Maybe, yeah, and it'd be like one band was playing, and then as soon as they were off, the next door band was starting.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: So then that way it was like almost like a rotating stage, but not rotating, right?
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: So yeah.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a great place to go.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I don't know why you know it's been a long time since I lived there.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: I've only been once, but I had a fantastic time.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really love Chicago, it's really pretty there.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: I do too.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: You know, uh it was a big shock moving to California.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: It was a whole different uh uh way of life, you know.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: And I worked in the movies, I worked with a lot of people from LA, which if they say, well, let's get together for lunch, that means F you.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: And in Chicago, people say that they take your phone number and they call you.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: So I had to get you a little, I had a little, you know.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: A little culture shock.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: A little culture shock, but I'm I'm loving it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: I'm not complaining.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Well, Chicago's my kind of town.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Ah it's a song.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Before your time, don't worry about it.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it'll be before his time.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Listen, I have a whole nine-hour playlist of probably you guys' favorite songs.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: And I listen to it regularly, yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: I love that about you.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: I love that about you.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Okay, so I know that some of your jokes are about your multiple marriages.
- 10:47SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: I was hot.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Quality content there.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, I was.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: I'm not.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: You still are.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Girl, no, I'm telling you, I am so not the hot girl at the club.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: It's oh no, it's weird.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: I love the longer hair.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Because when we first got your hair, it was a little bit shorter.
- 11:02SPEAKER_04: I like it this length.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: I like it.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: Thanks.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Well, I had had cancer, so I had a lot of hair.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: And so my hair was coming in, and now, you know, I look like I should be on the$1 bill.
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna say at least$100.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: At least a hundred dollars.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: At least a hundred dollars.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Um Benjamin, get out of there, Benjamin.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Susie Takeover.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: You and Ben have the same glasses going, right?
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I glasses, you know, I've had to wear them since I was two, so um, I might as well work them, right?
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: Two.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Two.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Damn, I thought I was.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, I had, yeah.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: And they were not like the kind the kids have now.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Most of the time I didn't wear them and I ran into everything.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know the feeling.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: That's why I still wear mine now.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's why I'm at I got them on.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Well, do you you were married three times?
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: I'm on my fourth marriage.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Fourth marriage.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Well, do you know four times a charm?
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: There's a few people who've who've beaten you in this category.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: My friends call me Ja Ja, they call me uh I've gotten called everyone who's had multiple marriages.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: I've gotten what about Judy Garland?
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, Judy.
- 12:04SPEAKER_04: You know, poor Judy.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: So Judy Garland, do you know who that is?
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: Oh, who is she?
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: Do you know who it is?
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Who?
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: It it's escaping me, but I do.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: Wizard of Oz.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: That's what I thought.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: But I don't want to sound stupid.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: But I have seen the Wizard of Oz, okay?
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: And the Michael Jackson version.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: The Oz.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, the whiz.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: The whiz.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: The sphere.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: I want to see the sphere.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: I heard it's great.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: They drop apples.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: They drop apples and yeah, I begin too high.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: I can't do nothing with that.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Well, it's definitely something to do high, that's for sure.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: I don't recommend it straight.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: I haven't done it, but I'm pretty sure.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: So uh Judy Garland was married five times.
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: Good God.
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: Who is Taylor eight?
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Damn.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Sometimes the same person, which uh uh who has a but you mean it that has a joke about it, and they said, you know, they said, Oh, well, you know, it didn't work out, and you know, I was wouldn't work the first time, and the guy said, No, you just have a learning disability.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Why would you marry the same person?
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no shit.
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: I've had family members do it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: It's happened.
- 13:05SPEAKER_04: I've seen it, yeah, yeah.
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: So I mean, just sometimes I think you know, things maybe you're just not in the right, like we were at one point in your life, and then you one person's going like this, and then sometimes you come back to each other, you know.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: So it's just Hell no.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna go if I eat something that makes me sick, I'm not gonna go eat that shit again.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Right, I'm not going back there.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: My husband number two happened to move to Carlsbad, and uh he knows I'm living not far from.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna run into him and I talk about him in my ex in my special.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: I don't use his name because he's a lawyer and I'm not stupid.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: Doesn't mean he isn't, so well, you know, he was one of those dogs that uh was hard to keep on the porch.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Or the dog, you know, on your leg that you can't shake off your leg.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: And I tried to get him to wear that cone of shame, but he just wouldn't do it.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: So I got rid of him.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: I dropped him off at the pound.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: Well, so we were talking why why is Judy who she like famous for?
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: And I think her biggest thing was probably Wizard of Oz, right?
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: And something that I don't know if you know this about Susie, but she was in the wardrobe industry before.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, hell yeah.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: Work down.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Did you watch uh Breaking Bad?
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's one of my favorite all-time shows.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I've watched it through like five times.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Real oh my gosh, I haven't even watched it that much.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: And my husband didn't like it at all.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: He said, There's nobody I like in this show.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: I couldn't watch the character, and I like it.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: The character development on that show is insane.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: That's insane.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: It's insane.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: Brian Cranston, what a what a tough one.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Absolute masterclass in acting for sure.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: My favorite scene is when the money's all stacked up in the in the storage unit, and it's on a pallet.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: And he's like, How much is this?
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they're all although he and Anna done a gun are standing there, and I just the way it was lit, the way it looked like, is like, wow, that is a pile of money.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And uh that was like they really presented it as like an unfathomable amount.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Like you can see, like there's no way to count it.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 15:05SPEAKER_04: Well, what is what do you think is the most like the most popular piece of wardrobe in American film history?
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: Walter White's tidy white.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: Uh let's see, there's so many.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: For me, you're asking somebody to pick their favorite candy who's a sugar addict.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: There's so many.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Um I have to think about it.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: But uh probably the old movies with the beautiful dresses that the women wear.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: They're still in the wardrobe, but they're still a Western costume.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: They have a lot of them.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: I think that um I think some of those dresses are just or shawl, you know, shawl collar tucks that they wore in the 40s and stuff like that.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: What about the ruby wet red slippers?
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Oh, the ruby red slippers, and your little dog too.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Uh that didn't do it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: The dress I certainly have seen a lot of those slippers on Halloween.
- 15:58SPEAKER_04: Well, that's what I'm gonna talk about today is the ruby red slippers.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: There's a crime that involves those shoes.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: With the original shoes?
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Wow, tell me about that.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: How come I don't know about that?
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: I had to get an F in wardrobe.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Welcome to No One Gets Hurt.
- 16:17SPEAKER_04: So uh Judy was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and she was the third child of, I guess, vaudeville actors, right?
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: And she made it big and gets on all these different movies.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: And I guess that um the town of Grand Rapids wanted to honor her and have a museum about her.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: So they have a lot of memorabilia from Wizard of Oz and other uh writings of hers and photographs, whatever.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: And they had on loan one of the pair of ruby red slippers.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, a person who owned the slippers had gifted it to them to showcase.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: So the museum did not own the slippers, but they were on loan.
- 17:00SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 17:00SPEAKER_04: And at the time, this is I believe 2018.
- 17:04SPEAKER_04: No, uh 2015, I believe it's 2015.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: They are insured for a million dollars.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say, uh museums, what they can show and have uh depends on their insurance, what insurance they have.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: And so I was thinking when you were saying that, I wonder what they insured those for a million dollars.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: At the time I never considered it.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so they're insured for a million dollars and uh they had it in display in a glass box, whatever.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: So on one particular day, they had these kids from a school uh doing, you know, a field trip as children do.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: And apparently, unintentionally, the kids were tripping the security alarm.
- 17:43SPEAKER_04: And so the alarm kept going off.
- 17:45SPEAKER_04: And eventually the museum director just shut the alarm off because it's what a dumbass.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: What an idiot.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: They had to reset it.
- 17:54SPEAKER_04: So I guess there was a situation where they had to reset it.
- 17:57SPEAKER_04: And of all the nights, that's the night that an individual named Terry John Martin used a sledgehammer to break into the museum and no alarm went off.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: He was for sure case in the place, and he saw that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_04: I I don't know, but he was an inside job.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: They don't believe it was an inside job.
- 18:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:18SPEAKER_04: So he's he can you understand why, or can you guess why he stole the ruby red slippers?
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Because they're worth a million dollars.
- 18:26SPEAKER_04: Uh he wanted to wear them.
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: No, he thought they were actually made of rubies.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: What an idiot.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: So, so one of his uh friends basically told him, like, these slippers have rubies on them.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: You need to steal these slippers.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: And then I my impression, or what my guess is, is that they were thinking they'll part it, right?
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: They'll cut it out up and sell off the rubies.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Just break up the that's what I think allegedly that they could.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: So apparently, when he gets to the ruby red slippers, he realizes it's sequence.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Ruby Red sequence.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: What an idiot.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but he still takes them and then they're gone for like 10 years.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: Nobody knows where they were.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: So they knew he took them.
- 19:18SPEAKER_04: They didn't know it was him.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: Oh, they didn't know yet.
- 19:20SPEAKER_04: No, no, they don't, they they I because this I don't think they had video surveillance, which seems kind of odd because it was like I said, like about probably 15 years ago.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: So I'm kind of surprised they didn't have video surveillance, or if they did, I didn't see him in the video.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: They turned it off, and I'm gonna tell you a story of a museum I worked at once that did the same thing, and then when it was off, the museum burned down.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: Well, what are you that see, that's weird, yeah.
- 19:41SPEAKER_04: So basically they go missing, and then uh they the FBI is involved, and they keep trying to figure things out, and they keep doing investigating, and they find out that um Terry uh had been basically prompted by a colleague, a friend of his, to steal these slippers, like I said.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: And uh how old was he?
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: About 66.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: 66.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: What?
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know why I was imagining like a 25, 30.
- 20:14SPEAKER_04: Someone much younger and naive.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: It was one last hurrah.
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: He had been incarcerated before for robbing and allegedly, I don't know.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, so what do you do when you're in the big house?
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: And then what'd you do?
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: What are you in here?
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Still ruby slippers.
- 20:27SPEAKER_04: Well, he never makes it there because he 10 years go by, and I guess part of the issue is that it they the uh FBI figures.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: I I don't know.
- 20:39SPEAKER_04: I well, how about this?
- 20:40SPEAKER_04: Let me reverse course here.
- 20:42SPEAKER_04: So because it was a million dollars, the owner of the shoes makes the claim and he gets the million dollars.
- 20:49SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 20:50SPEAKER_04: So now apparently someone within Terry's crew or Terry, either way, is now trying to do some kind of a maybe a blackmail allegedly, or some kind of a something to basically try to get money for the shoes.
- 21:05SPEAKER_04: And then that's my understanding how the FBI figures out who it is, right?
- 21:10SPEAKER_04: And then he ends up agreeing that he did it and pleading that he does it as a last ditch effort because he is dying and he doesn't want that on his conscience.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: So he decides to say, Yep, I did it.
- 21:23SPEAKER_04: And they they had the shoes.
- 21:24SPEAKER_04: And I don't, I at last I know is that they were in an FBI locker.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: I don't know if they ended up um what ended up happening with the shoes because at this point the owner has been tendered the million dollars, so he doesn't own the shoes anymore.
- 21:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, the shoes are worth actually$3.5 million.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: And the last what I was able to research is that there was going to be an auction for the shoes, and I don't I I couldn't find what happened to the shoes.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: That would piss me the fuck off.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Fell's the owner of the shoes.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean that would make me so fucking mad.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, my dad was in the insurance business.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: I would have if he was alive, I'd ask him, what happens when you pay out?
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: A million dollars and then what you paid out on shows up.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: Do you have to give back no take backs?
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, do you have to give back once the shoes are there?
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: That's what I was thinking.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Like, you could give that million back, and hey, my shoes are here.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Like, it's fine.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Just give me give me my fucking shoes.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: So I phoned a friend on this issue, uh uh.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: Also known as my husband.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: The cheat code, the human cheat code.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: And his answer was it depends on what the contract says.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: So basically, if there's a contractual agreement that says if the item shows up, the individual has an opportunity to tender the money back, then they can exchange and he can get the shoes back.
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: So, like up for a million dollars, he can get his shoes back.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: But I don't know.
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: I mean, because now at that point in time, the shoes are valued at, I mean, it's hard to value, but valued at$3.5 million.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: Three times the amount.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: So uh, and I guess there's four pairs of shoes at least.
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: One is in uh Smithsonian Institute in DC, one is in the American Film Museum or what whatever it's called in in California.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure where the other pair is.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: I think the other's there.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: I well, I saw them there once.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know if they're still there.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: It could have been on the who knows, but yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: And then these pair that were privately owned.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: So I'm not sure what ends up happening to him, but it's kind of a Cinderella story in a way, I guess.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: But so he got they didn't find the prince.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Found out 10 years later.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Is there like a statute on that or anything?
- 23:23SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, that's a good question.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: I'm not I'm not sure how call your friend.
- 23:27SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 23:27SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: I think again.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: I think it depends on the state.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: And I and this was a crime where it was an artifact slash art slash.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: I guess that's a good point.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: So it's like it had like a probably like a different category than just a normal like stealing a Rolex or something like that.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: So it was a cultural uh history piece or a piece of art.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: So that was part of it.
- 23:51SPEAKER_04: So, anyways, they I don't know what his sentence ended up being because they were he was basically in hospice at the time that he was charged.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: So I I think that there was probably an agreement that he was just like, Thank you for turning these in kind of a thing.
- 24:06SPEAKER_04: So yeah, but I I'm surprised that someone would think that the ruby red slippers were made of ruby.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's fucking stupid.
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: That'd be very uncomfortable shoes to wear.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Speaking of stupid, I watch a show on TV called My Stupid Crimes or something.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: It's on uh Hulu, I think.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'll have to check that out.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: Or Amazon, one of the two, and it's like a guy drives a bulldozer into a liquor store to rob the liquor store.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Well, was that Tony?
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: I never robbed a liquor store, okay.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Only drug dealers.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: 7-Eleven is a liquor store adjacent.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Not in not in Virginia, you gotta go to the ABC store.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, well, yeah, in Virginia, the government regulates it, right?
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: ABC Alcoholic Beverage Control Store.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: My parents lived in North Carolina, same thing.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: Yep, same thing.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: We used to go down, so I was like 20 minutes from the border, and you can't buy Everclear in Virginia.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: But you can get it.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Us too.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: In a bathtub.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: The girl fell in it with grape juice, and she was naked, a little drunk, and half of her was purple, and we called her sorry Debbie, purple Herbie for the rest of the high school, which meant at our reunion she cried when we said purple herbie.
- 25:16unknown: She cried.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Did you guys cut up the fruits in there too?
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, we did all kinds of stuff.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Jungle juice, that's what you call it.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, jungle juice.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: That was the shit.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: I was never a drinker.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Me either, but I would fuck some jungle juice up.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: No, I I didn't.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: I I knew I knew my life.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: But I would make it.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: I would, you know, I was the Martha Stewart of the Mark the Steward of Jungle Juice.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: You should write that down.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: That's hilarious.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: I was.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: That's funny.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: I don't know how that came to be, but certainly guess I was not raised by Martha.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: We played beer pong with Jungle Juice one time.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: That's a story for off-camera.
- 25:57SPEAKER_04: I I can never play beer pong because I'm such a little like grossed out.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: Because I like I would see so when my husband and I are in law school, he had a ping pong table in his house.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: And I know.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: And so they would play beer pong, but I as soon as I was like, oh, the pond, the ball falls on the ground, and then they they sometimes they would have a rinse cup, but usually there's no rinse cup.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: We put water in the cups and then just drink from our own drink.
- 26:25SPEAKER_04: Oh, see, that's smart.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: No, they had the beer, it actually went into the beer cup.
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: Fuck no, that's I was like, that's like I don't want little fuzz balls in my beer.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: I don't drink beer either, so there's that too.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: It tastes like vomit too.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: I it just tastes like drinking bread, and I'm like, I would rather eat my bread.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: Bread?
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: I've never heard that before.
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: I'll write it down.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: I like a nice cold beer.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't like getting drunk though, so I only have like one or two.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: I just feel like it's not refreshing.
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: I know people are always like, oh, a nice cold beer.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: It's definitely not refreshing.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: I would rather have it fills all up, too.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:55SPEAKER_04: No, that's what I'm saying.
- 26:55SPEAKER_04: It's like bread.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: It's like just drinking bread.
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: So, anyways.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: So, so in you know, the first time we're gonna have our guest bring us a crime.
- 27:06SPEAKER_04: So please do us.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: I have a couple crimes.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: You guys reminded me of the museum I worked at, the Byer Museum of the Arts in Evanston, Illinois.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: I was his assistant.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you a quick story about that.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: And my father was in the insurance business, and on New Year's Eve, someone turned off the alarms, and the museum burned.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: It was a brick, solid brick building.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: So it took a long time for them to know it was even on fire.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: And um my father gave me probably the best advice he ever gave me.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: He said, They're gonna ask you to go through stuff, they're gonna ask you to hold something for them or whatever.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: Have nothing to do with taking care of this or not, and go find another job.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: And I did.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: And years later, he was arrested for insurance fraud.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: But he had a lot of money.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Can I tell a dirty story about it?
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I was one night I was I was I left work and I forgot something at my desk and I had to get it.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: And I came back and it was in a three-story building, and on the top of the first story, there were two full bedroom suites.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: And I always thought, what are those there for?
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: But I hadn't worked there long, and I asked, and someone said, Oh, those are when we have our artist guests stay there.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: And I said, Oh, well, okay, because nice to put them out.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: They probably don't have any money, most of them.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: So um I come back and go to my desk and I hear this screaming, and there's beautiful staircase in this thing.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: I hear screaming, and here comes this woman, I won't say her name, running down stark naked.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Then my boss, stark naked, then his wife in a fur coat.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Spicy.
- 28:43unknown: Yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: So I was like, whoa, well, okay.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: I think I better get my stuff and get out of here.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: We never talked about it.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, they call it like artist in residence, so they they were using the residence for some other kind of artists.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was uh body art or something.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but uh yeah.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: So anyway, but um when we first moved to California, uh uh we met a lot of uh con men.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: And I had never met one con man.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: If I did, I was never conned, I don't know.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: But uh this guy, we met him at a party in Carlsbad, and uh he had a wife and he had three beautiful kids, and I love kids.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: I I I'm I I am a kid, so I was like playing with the kids.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: That's how I met them.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: I was I was playing with the kids, and um he supposedly was developing an app that was for money, but he mined bitcoins and it turned Bitcoin somehow into money.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Well, that didn't compute to me.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Literally that did not compute, but anyway, but he was never pun intended or yeah, and it just didn't uh I don't know.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: He was this big guy, he's from the East Coast, he's like all the Sopranos, his central casting sopranos.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: His wife, his wife had the most beautiful hair, and I found out later she was a hair model.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: I didn't even know there were hair models.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: I was just this, you know, everyone who met her said, Oh, your hair is so beautiful, and it wasn't.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: I take offense to that.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I have really bad, nappy white girl hair.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: And so uh, but I'm part black, so that's why it's so nappy.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that until 23 and me.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Wow, my parents have some splaining to do.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Wait, like three percent?
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: Uh 10.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: And uh uh somebody, a friend of mine is a comic the other night, I was getting on stage.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: He goes, Look at that black butt get up there.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: No one's ever told me, but I guess it is.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 30:33SPEAKER_04: That's where the 10% is.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's where it is, that's all it is.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Yep, yep, exactly.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: And uh I won't go into that.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: So uh we my husband is Italian, this guy is Italian.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: Uh his name, I'm not telling his tales out of school, is John Genty.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: And his wife's name was Cara, but that's not her real name, I found out.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: And so um I met them and I asked them.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: I I had a brother who was sick, he was very Catholic, and I was always taking him.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, we he stayed at our house when he had gut cancer, and so he wanted to go to the Catholic Church, and uh I don't go there.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: But I took him, but I took him there.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: Your brother's Catholic?
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: He became Catholic.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: But you're not Catholic, no, okay.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: No, we weren't raised, we were raised Catholic Light, Episcopalian.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 31:17SPEAKER_04: I think cafeteria Catholic, but yeah, yeah, that's what my I grew up cafeteria Catholic, so uh you pick and choose what you're doing.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: He was too.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: I asked him because my brother was a bad boy, and I said to him, Do you they have the Ten Commandments in the Catholic uh church?
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: He said, Yeah, they do.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: And I said, Did they ever tell you what they are?
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: And he said, They're just suggestions.
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: Well, also, also, it's all good as long as you go to confession.
- 31:40SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 31:40SPEAKER_04: Then you're cleansed of your sins.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: And he used to go every day when you could go every day.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: I said to him, What the hell are you doing?
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Buying drugs from a priest, it sounds like I probably wouldn't.
- 31:52SPEAKER_04: I want a tangent.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: I will say that's gotta be the best part about being a priest is the juicy confessions.
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: Like that's kind of funny.
- 32:00SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's gotta be.
- 32:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, yeah, that too.
- 32:05SPEAKER_04: But I'm sure.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Probably so they and they also do, they've been known to do some some dirty shit.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: They have been.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: To say the least.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: When you repress somebody, it comes out sideways.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, it always does.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: So anyway, so uh so we became friends with this couple and their kids, and we'd take the kids to the movies.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: You know, I don't I want to see kids' movies, like if there's a SpongeBob movie.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: What adult I could get you to go with me, maybe absolutely.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: But I he's already there.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: But today, uh yes, I yeah, I have somebody, but before today I I didn't have an adult, nor so I wanted to go to Dollywood.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: And so I'm not doing that, I'm sorry.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: And uh so they would invite us over for um dinner or whatever, and um and he had a tremendous sense of humor because con men, you know, they have to ingratiate themselves to you, and you'd go to their house, and it looked like Pottery Barn and William Sonoma had moved into their dining room.
- 33:03SPEAKER_04: Do you know where the term con man comes from?
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: No.
- 33:06SPEAKER_04: So our understanding is it comes from the term or this gentleman named Sopy Smith, and it's back from when they did shell games, and they were competent.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: So they're competence men.
- 33:19SPEAKER_04: Oh, yes, yes, yeah.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: So they are competence, right?
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: I I feel like it could be convict, but I I maybe it's a maybe it's a blitz.
- 33:25SPEAKER_04: Why'd you look at me when she said what she said did no no no?
- 33:29SPEAKER_04: Do you take offense?
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: No, no, okay.
- 33:33SPEAKER_04: If you agreed, no, sorry to interrupt, but yeah, apparently that's why con men are called conmen, because they're they have a lot of confidence.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: So, anyways.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: So anyway, so in her house, and she would have, like they have at um uh pottery barn or or William Sonoma, uh, like a charger plate with another plate and a salad plate and a bowl.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Lots of and if it was Easter the month before Easter, every rabbit thing you could imagine.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: And we never ate at that table.
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: Must have so much storage to have all that and do all those dishes.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: I can't imagine.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: And I said to my husband when we went to their house, I said, I bet they rent this house.
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: First time I went there, I bet they rent this house because the landscaping really wasn't taken care of.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: And someone who lives in a nice neighborhood in San Diego takes care of their yard, or they have someone to take care of their yard.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: No, and she didn't drive.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Oh and they live in California for many, many years.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: So I thought, that's odd.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, I I had friends that came from Germany, they said, We'll just ride our bikes.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: I said, Do you know where you are?
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: That's a long story.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: And so um I had this uneasy feeling about him, but I love the kids.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: The kids were, I was just, I love and the kids were I I often wonder where they are now.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: And then my brother said to me, uh, call your friend up, they're Catholics, find out where they go to church.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: So we went to their church and they were there.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: And uh he started talking to my brother, and you know, they hit it off, and the guy's very funny.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: My brother is very funny, and they invited us to come over for dinner that night.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: And um, hmm.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: So anyway, so he started putting the moves on my brother.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: I could tell.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Not the moves sexual, no, no, the money move.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Because my brother was a shopping center developer.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: Uh built uh Fashion Island right here.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, brother.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: My brother was a big deal.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: And uh and I didn't want any of his money because I knew his children would come after me for it.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: So I'd when he'd be sick and dying, I'd say, Don't leave me a dime.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: I don't want anything.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so and he he didn't.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: They thought he didn't know.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: Anyway, that's how I'm trying.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: So anyway, so he my brother said, you know, if he could this guy, John, was saying, I'm having a hard time getting financing.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: The app is taking longer to develop, you know how that is.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: My brother said, Well, I know a lot of money, people.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: Let me make some calls, and you know, you have lunch with us someday.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: You know, could do you come up to Newport?
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: So um I said to my brother, I said, I have a bad feeling about this.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: He knows you have cancer, he's asking you for money.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: That's not what most people do.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: And and my brother being funny goes, but his wife's hair.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: He says, Oh, forgive him.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: So my brother calls me the day.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: Wait, is your brother married at this time?
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: No.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: When he got uh when we moved here, uh he said to his wife of 30 years, Susie says, if I want a marriage like hers, I've got the wrong, raw materials.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: I said, Thanks for throwing me under the bus, man.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: So she didn't like that.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: Or oh brother.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh brother where our though.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: I don't know where he is.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so um so he left his wife, actually.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: He he packed a suitcase that night and left his wife.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Whoa.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: No, he did have a girlfriend.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: He always had a girlfriend.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: But anyway, who's gonna be a good one?
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: It is Newport Beach after all.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so well, and yeah, and um in our family, you know, one and done for marriage is usually not the thing.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: Uh my parents, they were married 60 years.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: They hated each other, but they say holy shit.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, 60 years.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: I would kill my husband with that.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: I'd be handed for murder, I'm sure.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: Just that one thing he did would just push me over the edge.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: And um and it would probably be like socks on the bathroom floor or something.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: Oh no, no, no, no, no.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: I picked up dirty clothes for a living.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: I was a rag picker.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: All I did was pick up dirty clothes.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that means I don't want to do it at home.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, he can't bend over.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: So he can't.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, back surgery, he can't bend over.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so my brother goes to lunch with a bunch of.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna use that sometime.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:33SPEAKER_04: I can't bend over.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, do it.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: It works.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: It's true though.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: I'm just kidding.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: Slip on shoes are his thing.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: Oh so uh and now there's a whole bunch of them.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: Yes, sketchers.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: I didn't know that was a whole like industry.
- 37:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's like a big deal.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: It is.
- 37:49SPEAKER_04: I'm like, I just slip on my shoes and then.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I haven't tied these in like a year.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, become you know the biggest part of the population, things like that are boomers.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, boomers gonna boom.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're gonna boom.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Although now I'm a Jones.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: I found out I'm too young to be a boom.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: I'm a Jones.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: I didn't know there was a difference.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 55 to uh 65 or Joneses.
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: Boomers, Joneses X?
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: Okay where the hell does that term come from?
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: I've never heard of it.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: Keeping up with the Joneses, because we had the best of the after World War II, we had the best of everything, and we had a lot of competition between people.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: That's how places like this exist.
- 38:25SPEAKER_04: Do you know where the term keeping up with the Joneses comes from?
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: Nope.
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, my husband would love you.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: He loves ideology of things.
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: Allegedly, okay, allegedly.
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: Savannah, Georgia, there's a street called Jones Street, and it's like a very and I've been there, it's a very beautiful street, and people always want to keep up appearances on Jones Street, and it was like one of the more affluent streets.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: So it was like keeping allegedly, who knows?
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was on a tour.
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, it might be convenient, but did you know you're doing a podcast with Wikipedia here?
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, I did.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, anything that's like actually important, don't know.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: But random trivia, I'm your girl.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: That's my husband, too.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: He's uh we less last anyway.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: So my brother goes to lunch with these guys.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: John Junti comes up there.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: Uh these guys smell tuna instantly.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: Instantly.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: These guys are like so.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: They go home and Google him.
- 39:19SPEAKER_02: He's already been arrested once for the same kind of scam.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: And he was a securities trader.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: It was a different thing with a very similar scam.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: And um so my brother said, Oh, he said, You were right.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: He said, you know, he said, they don't my family calls me the airport dog.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: TSA.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: No, this was before the TSA existed.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: TSA, if you've met some TSA people, yeah.
- 39:45SPEAKER_02: Do you feel safer?
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: I don't.
- 39:47SPEAKER_04: Anyway, so depends on the day, I guess.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: But by the way, I just want to point out I love they smelled tuna.
- 39:53SPEAKER_04: That is such a polite thing to say.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: But it's like, I love it.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna have to incorporate that somehow.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Smell tuna, yeah.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: And so um, so he they didn't give him any money.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: And then uh every now and then I thought, well, this guy's running the scam, he's gonna get caught again because he's desperate because he got to pay for all that china, yeah, and uh and the hair and whatever all that pottery kids.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, he said a funny thing once.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: He said, My wife is like cheers when she goes in Williamson, everybody knows her name.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: And you know I will say I have a couple friends and family, like uh my like extended friendship that I've gone to the mall with, and it is quite bizarre when like I was at Neuma Markets and one of my friends, literally two different people in the department are like, Oh my gosh, hi, how are you?
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, Whoa, like you gotta like mean the salespeople know their people, but you gotta really spend some money for a salesperson to know who you are.
- 40:49SPEAKER_04: I gotta be a fruit and flyer.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Uh they know me at my local smoke shop.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: That's it's about as far as it goes.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's wild.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: So, anyway, so then I finally did, and I and the people that we met uh them at their house, I did call her and said, you know, I just want you to know that this is a scam, this whole thing is a scam.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and there were lots of tells when we went to their house that were, you know, tells.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: You think I play poker all the time, but I don't.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: And um, but anyway, the airport dog, uh, yeah, I knew it.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: I just had the feeling.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: So I wonder if anybody knows.
- 41:23SPEAKER_02: I keep googling it.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: He got arrested in Florida.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: He ran when he heard him, so he went to Florida.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: His mother lives in Florida.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: Of course, if you're Italian, the oldest of Italian family, you go to mama first.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: That's just how it works.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: I do the same thing.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: Not wasps, we don't do that.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so we don't.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: And uh uh so uh he got arrested in Florida, and that's the last I've I've heard I google I Google him every now and then just to see what's going on.
- 41:50SPEAKER_02: Do you know what a wasp is?
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Like the bug?
- 41:53SPEAKER_02: Say what?
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: Like the bug?
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: No.
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: Well, there is a wasp, but white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: Found out I'm half Jew, 10% black.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: I am not a wasp, but I was raised as one.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: What a wild mixture.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: I am a wild mixture.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: It makes sense now.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: You know, it all makes sense.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: When I found that I went, oh yeah, I'm not gonna go to therapy anymore.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna stay the way I am.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: I think I'll start stand-up comedy now that I know I'm half Jewish.
